“Comments from the users of your product are very favourable. The discs are very aggressive when used for angle grinding or facing of pipe. Typical resin discs quickly glaze over and/or wear unevenly (i.e. radius the edges) making them ineffective where as [sic] the [Safety Blade Grinder/Cutters] will repeatedly produce flat surfaces suitable for root face (land) preparation on pipe sizes up to NPS 6”. The holes in the disc also allow the operator to monitor the progress of the preparation without removing the grinder from the surface. Because of the aggressive grit there is an increase in vibration experienced by the grinder operator but is not intrusive. As a non-consumable type of disc the amount of air bourn [sic] particulate is almost nil, greatly reducing the hazards to the users and occupants of the work area.” - Welding Instructor “In September of 2009 Desert Diamond Industries LLC. sent us their 14” Vacuum Brazed Safety Blade. We have been using it for mostly steel during our forcible entry training classes where we cut re-bar, flat stock, hardened lock shackles, hardened padlock bodies, hockey puck locks, security gates, etc. We really like the one piece construction. This means that there is almost no chance of injury due to blade segment loss. The blade is also very forgiving to users not as experienced as others. There is less kickback, and due to the width of the cutting surface, and abrasive surface on the side of the blade, there is a lot less binding when the saw is twisted during operations. We also like the fact [that] there is no aluminum oxide dust and a lot less sparking when cutting steel. Over 1,000 firefighters have used the blade and it is still going strong.” - The Largest Firefighter Training Organization in North America “The operator loves it, he wants 'em. We're not 150 to 1 yet, but we're about 60 to 1... He doesn't have to change blades, it cuts easier, it doesn't throw sparks... We've only had it a week, but I can tell you right now, it's better... We figure 22 blades is a payback, so we're at 60 already, so we're already at a payback... Who knows how long it's gonna go... I'd like to get another one in here when that thing wears
out so we’re not going back to the abrasives, that's what I want.” Foundry Finishing Room Supervisor on the Ductile Iron Safety Blade “As of today we would have gone through 16 of the old type wheels. My guess is we are half way through the life of one side of the test wheel. If the life of the new type grinding wheel is the same as 64 of the old type wheel the cost would be just about half as much. The best part being we will not have the dust of the 64 old wheels in our lungs. That make [sic] the deal good from were [sic] I sit.” - Pipe Fabrication Supervisor on the Safety Blade Grinder/Cutter “I just wanted to let you know how pleased we are with our purchase... I ordered 2-14” Safety Blades. I used the blade today on 6” cast iron water pipe, 1” square solid steel spindle and 6” C-900 water pipe, an amazing blade!” Update: “We have taken your blade and have cut ductile iron pipe, C-900 pipe, cast iron pipe, A/C pipe, concrete sidewalk, pavement, steel spindles and we lent our saw to the mechanics and they rebuilt the under carriage of a cat crawl, cutting plate steel, flat iron and schedule 40 and 80 pipe. We are still trying to wear out this blade. We are well into the second year, the side grit for beveling is pretty well gone but the cutting diamonds look almost new, showing very little wear. The aggressiveness, the smooth cutting and the longevity of this blade is simple [sic] amazing.” - Municipal Water Department Foreman “We determined the blade will give us somewhere between 5-6 months daily usage, which saves us quite a bit over the composite blades in initial cost and labor... We have a more efficient job site now because we don't have down time of changing all the abrasive blades... On a 16 inch main repair we had to change abrasive blades 6-8 times which takes about 5 minutes each time, now your blade stays on the saw till the saw falls apart.” - Underground Crew Superintendent for a Municipal Water Department on the Ductile Iron Safety Blade

HAZARDS OF OTHER BLADES
THE THREE MOST DANGEROUS ACCIDENTS THAT OCCUR DURING THE USE OF ABRASIVE AND SEGMENTED DIAMOND SAW BLADES Based on OSHA Statistics 1. HAZARDS OF ABRASIVE BLADES: Known as silicon carbide, fiber or throwaway blades, these blades are the leading cause of injury and death from saws and grinders, according to the U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Based on OSHA statistics, an employee is 6.3 times more likely to be killed by a shattering abrasive blade than by a breaking diamond blade. The same employee is also 13 times more likely to suffer a serious injury requiring hospitalization from an abrasive blade than from a diamond blade. In 2008, a study done by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that over 450 people were seriously injured when their abrasive blades exploded during operation. In addition, abrasive blades produce air quality concerns. Studies are underway to determine the exact long-term lung damage from the silicon carbide fibers that abrasive blades generate during cutting and grinding. Although these studies are ongoing, this damage may include lung cancer and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases. Abrasive blades are more likely to shatter if: The blade is damaged by cracking, exposure to water or gasoline, etc. The blade gets pinched or bound in the material being cut. The blade is run at a higher RPM than recommended. The blade is used for more than one day. The blade is used for grinding or beveling. The blade is tilted to the left or right or twisted while cutting. 2. HAZARDS OF SEGMENTED DIAMOND BLADES: Diamond blade segment loss ranks as the second most deadly and dangerous jobsite accident. While not nearly as common as shattering abrasive blades, OSHA reports that, when a diamond blade loses a cutting segment, the results can be disastrous. A death occurred in 60% of the incidents where a segment or other piece broke off a diamond blade and hit an employee. The other 40% caused serious injuries requiring hospitalization. Segmented diamond blades can lose segments when: The blade has defective welds joining the segment to the steel core. The blade core wears thin from undercutting. The blade hits unexpected rebar in concrete. The blade overheats, weakening the segment weld. 3. HAZARDS OF SAW KICKBACK: Saw kickback injuries typically occur when cuts take longer than expected, such as when the blade is not appropriate for the material being cut. Longer cuts can cause the blade to heat up, start wobbling or even bounce. They can also cause greater saw operator fatigue. When saw operators get tired, they may lean on the saw or use more body weight to stabilize the blade inside the cut. Leaning on a saw means that, when the saw does kick back, the operator is closer to the blade than is safe. 20% of saw kickback injuries are fatal. The other 60% are serious enough to require hospitalization. Saws can kick back when: The blade is not appropriate for the material being cut. The blade is glazed over (i.e. diminished or even no exposed diamond) or warped. The blade binds or gets pinched in the cut. The saw operator uses the top edge of the blade to cut.
NOTE It’s best to buy your blades and grinders from a company that offers a Life Time Operator Error Warranty™. These companies have the highest quality products, which are engineered to withstand far more operator error than cheaper blades and grinding wheels. Page 28

Abrasive blades and grinding wheels can fly apart or “shatter” while cutting and grinding. The shrapnel from shattering abrasives can be deadly.
Silicon carbide fibers — used to make silicon carbide abrasive blades — under high magnification. These fibers lodge in the lungs and have the same carcinogenic or cancer-causing properties as asbestos. The following studies show increased risk of cancer and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases in workers exposed to them: American Journal of Epidemiology, Vol. 153, No. 10, pp. 978-986 and Occupational Medicine, Vol. 50, No. 2, pp. 103-106.

BENEFITS OF SOLID STEEL BLADES
The Solid Steel Safety Blade Is Safer Than Abrasive and Segmented Diamond Blades 1. SAFETY BLADES ELIMINATE INJURIES FROM SHATTERING BLADES: The only way to eliminate the risk of injuries and fatalities from shattering abrasive blades is to stop using abrasive blades completely. Safety Blades are made of solid steel to eliminate the risk of . STILL THINK THAT ABRASIVES ARE CHEAPER THAN SAFETY BLADES? A Safety Blade will outlast 150 abrasive blades, each costing $4 to $8. 150 abrasive blades x $4 to $8 = $600 to $1,200! Safety Blades are cheaper in the long run! 2. SAFETY BLADES ELIMINATE INJURIES FROM SEGMENT LOSS: If your blades have cutting segments welded to their cores, then you run a high risk of segment loss, which can injure or kill your employees. The Safety Blade eliminates all risk of segment loss because it’s the only blade on the market that does not have welded cutting segments that can break off during cutting, increasing your employees’ safety. 3. SAFETY BLADES REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURIES FROM SAW KICKBACK: One of the main factors in saw kickback injuries is operator fatigue and its byproduct, standing too close to the saw. The Safety Blade shortens the time needed to make cuts and thus helps reduce operator fatigue. It can cut a 6’’ ductile iron main with 0.25” walls in less than 40 seconds, reducing average cutting time by over 80%! In addition, our clients tell us that their employees don’t have to lean or push on the saw to make it cut, which is a big safety factor for them.

First of all, it’s important to understand that the blade doesn’t do most of the cutting; the diamond particles on its surface do. That being said, there are two ways to get those all-important diamonds onto a blade. Most blades have impregnated cutting segments welded onto a steel core. The manufacturing process used to make these impregnated segments is the oldest in the book. Once manufactured, these segments can be attached to steel blade cores one of several ways, including sintering, laser welding and cold or hot pressing. The problem with impregnated blades — apart from the teensy fact that the segments might break off while cutting and injure or kill the saw operator — is that you have to match the hardness or “bond” of your blade to the material that you’re cutting. Cutting wears away the segment, shedding worn diamond particles and exposing fresh diamond which, as we said, do most of the cutting.
If a blade’s bond is too soft, the blade wears down too fast. If it’s too hard, on the other hand, then the diamonds wear down too fast — faster than the cutting segment, in fact — so that the blade cuts slower and “glazes” over. A glazed blade can quickly overheat from increased friction, degrading the weld holding the segment to the core and increasing the chance of segment loss. To restore a glazed blade, you have to run it through something abrasive, like a dressing stick or asphalt, to expose more diamonds. This wastes your time and wears down your blade faster. You don’t have to worry about matching the bond of a vacuum-brazed blade to your job because vacuum-brazed blades have thick coats of diamond right on the surface and ready to cut, instead of being buried inside a cutting segment. This means that you can cut almost anything with a vacuum-brazed blade and not worry about it wearing down prematurely or glazing over!
Close-up of a Safety Blade segment. Notice the thick coat of diamonds on the cutting edge. Safety Blades have the most diamonds of any commercially available diamond blade on the market. This high concentration of diamond gives Safety Blades their aggressive performance and long cutting life.

Our Vacuum-Brazing Process Gives You a More Versatile Blade That Can Tackle Any Cutting Job
SAFETY BLADE WEAR PATTERNS
Know When to Replace Your Safety Blade We want to familiarize you with a few aspects of your new Safety Blade. Though this is a diamond blade, it doesn’t have diamond-impregnated segments welded to a steel core, like other diamond blades. The Safety Blade has a vacuum-brazed cutting surface where the diamond is bonded to the outside of the steel core. The reason we key on the word “outside” is to make you aware that a vacuum-brazed cutting segment will not wear down like a typical impregnated segment. You can tell when the blade needs to be replaced simply by looking at the cutting edge (the portion of the blade that actually does the cutting, see photo no. 1) and not the sides (photos no. 4 and 5 ). When the cutting edge starts to get smooth, the blade is wearing out and needs replacement (photos no. 2 and 3).
1. Here, the blade is new and unused. The diamond is sharp and pronounced.
1
As the diamond wears down, the blade will become dull. In some cases, the diamonds form a wear pattern in the opposite direction of blade rotation. This typically happens after cutting metallic products. Just flip the blade over so that the wear pattern spins into the cut. Doing so will help restore like-new performance.
2. Here, the segment is worn, showing signs of heavy use on steel. It has possibly 25% life left. Your blade will show signs of slowing down at this point. Make sure you have a backup Safety Blade available. If not, it’s time to consider ordering a new one.
2 3. Here, the blade is completely worn out. Do not use a blade that looks like this. Remove it from your saw, even if there is diamond on the side of the cutting edge. Vacuum-brazing places one layer of diamond on the cutting edge. The blade must be replaced once this layer is worn down.
3
4
5
Page 32
At this point, the blade must be immediately replaced. Call (800) 6545890 or visit http://www.desertdiamondindustries.com to order a new Safety Blade. This level of wear on the cutting edge is not covered under our Life Time Operator Error Warranty™. 4. Notice the diamond on the side of the blade is still plentiful. Though it may still work as a grinding or beveling surface, replacement is still required. This level of wear on the cutting edge is not covered under our Life Time Operator Error Warranty™. 5. Here the blade has an extreme wear pattern on one side of the blade, possibly caused by extreme use after the cutting edge had worn away. This is not recommended. Replace your blade as soon as metal becomes visible on its cutting edge (see photo no. 3) or sides (see photo no. 4). This level of wear on the grinding edge is not covered under our Life Time Operator Error Warranty™.

Here is some information to help you decide what diamond blade is right for you and your business.
Material The type of material you're cutting is the key to determining the best blade for you. Cured Concrete: If you plan to cut cured concrete without water, it's best to shop for a laser-welded blade. The laser welding process is the strongest process available for attaching cutting segment to steel blade cores, thus reducing problems associated with segment loss. It's best to find a company that provides a life time warranty on their products. This way, you're covered from financial loss if the blade becomes damaged and unusable before it wears out. If you plan to run the blade with water, you can use a sintered saw blade. However, if the concrete contains reinforcement, you'll want to use to a laserwelded saw blade instead. You may also want to consider buying a laserwelded turbo segmented blade if you know that you’ll be cutting reinforced concrete. A turbo segmented blade will cut faster through reinforced concrete.
Example of a turbo segmented blade
For jobs with lots of prolonged concrete cutting, it's best to find a supplier who can match your blade’s bond with your concrete aggregate. You should also take into consideration whether your concrete will have rebar or wire mesh reinforcement. Matching your blade's bond to your aggregate will give you a fast cutting blade with a satisfying life. The hardness of concrete aggregate varies depending on the part of the country that you’re in. Luckily, concrete is often locally produced, so you can determine the hardness of your aggregate by where your job is.
Aggregate Hardness in the Contiguous United States
The aggregate map above can help you determine your aggregate hardness. For example, someone cutting in Louisiana would need a blade with a soft bond to maximize cutting speed and blade life in concrete with hard aggregate. Someone in Florida, on the other hand, would need a blade with a harder bond for cutting concrete with soft aggregate. Asphalt and Green Concrete: Asphalt and green concrete are softer and more abrasive than cured concrete. For these materials, it's best to shop for a blade with a hard bond. If you dry cut, you'll want to choose a laser-welded blade to prevent segment loss. You'll also want a blade that has either drop segments or carbide inserts to protect against undercutting. On the other hand, if you plan to use the blade with water, you can go with a hard-bonded sintered blade. You usually don't need to worry about hitting rebar when cutting asphalt. Stranger things have happened, though, so be careful. As with concrete cutting, if you find yourself doing lots of asphalt cutting, it's best to find a supplier that can match your blade bond to the type of asphalt aggregate you're dealing with. This way, you get optimal cutting speed and maximum blade life. For green concrete, it's best to look for a blade that's a little bit thinner than 0.125”, the standard blade thickness. By using a 0.100” or 0.110” thick blade in fresh concrete, you'll reduce spalling problems and also prevent any cracking or chipping that may occur. Pipe: When shopping for an underground pipe cutting blade, it's best to find a blade that can handle any type of pipe. Pipe materials include, but are not limited to, ductile iron, cast iron, PVC, HDPE, AC, RCP, clay and ceramic. The Safety Blade (see pages 1 and 4) is your best option here, because it can cut all of these materials and more without any trouble. In addition, if you have to bevel pipe occasionally, you can use the side of the Safety Blade’s 8mm cutting surface. This provides optimal beveling capabilities when using the side of the cutting edge.

HOW TO CHOOSE A DIAMOND BLADE
How to Choose a Diamond Blade
HOW TO CHOOSE A DIAMOND BLADE
Do not bevel with abrasive, welded or sintered blades. They’ll shatter or lose segments and possibly injure or kill you if you use them to bevel. It's best to find a supplier that offers a Life Time Operator Error Warranty™ on their products. This way, if the blade is damaged from getting pinched in the pipe, you're covered against any financial loss. Masonry and Landscape: The masonry and landscape industry uses a wide variety of material like brick, block, granite, stone and pavers. Each of these materials has an assortment of densities and other qualities that affect cutting speed and blade life. Generally speaking, if you want a good multipurpose blade that can tackle most industry-standard materials, you'll want a blade with a medium-soft bond. On the other hand, you'll want a hard-bonded blade if you cut lots of softer and/or abrasive materials like block and sandstone and a soft-bonded blade if you cut lots of hard, dense and/or nonabrasive materials. You can also buy blades for more specialized applications. For material that chips or cracks easily, use a continuous rim blade. For faster cutting, look for a turbo segmented blade with large gullets between the segments. To reduce cutting noise, look for a diamond blade with a sound-dampening core.
Tool You also need to consider the type of tool you’ll be using in order to maximize your blade’s life and performance and keep yourself safe. Handheld vs. Walk-Behind Saws: Generally speaking, if you use a walk-behind saw that is 20 HP or above, you'll need a blade that’s pre-tensioned for
high speed and high torque. If you use a handheld saw blade on a high-horsepower walk-behind saw, the blade’s cutting segment will burn up in a matter of minutes, endangering your safety and possibly your life. Stihl Saws: If you use a Stihl handheld saw, look for blades with straight 20mm arbor holes. This will help prevent problems associated with vibrating or wobbling. Not only that, but you’ll never have to worry about losing bushings.
Other Considerations In order to get maximum blade life and lowest costper-cut, here are some other things you need to consider. Diamond Concentration: A blade’s diamond concentration will determine how long it lasts. This concentration can vary from 10% to 45%. For jobs that require lots of cutting, you'll want a blade with a high diamond content. For small jobs that require little cutting, on the other hand, you can get away with a blade with a lower diamond content. Diamond Segment Height: The height of a blade’s cutting segments will also determine its life. Segment height can vary between 3mm and 15mm. For large cutting jobs, look for a larger diamond segment. For smaller jobs, you may be able to get away with a 3mm segment. Wet and Dry Cutting: Using water with your diamond blades is the best way to maximize their lives. It will also give you a cleaner cut, reduce heat build-up and cut back on dust (see page 58, Wet Cutting vs. Dry Cutting).

Diamond Blades Q. Can I use a diamond blade for side-grinding as well as cutting? A. Only if you use a blade with a solid steel core. A regular welded segment diamond blade is not designed to take the force of side-grinding and will break. To address this, Desert Diamond Industries designed the Safety Blade with a solid steel core. It can side grind on ductile iron, cast iron, steel, concrete and other materials without any problems. Q. What arbor sizes are on different tools? A. You can determine the arbor of your saw or grinder by its manufacturer. Handheld Saws Husqvarna

Tool Arbors Q. Do I need to use water with all diamond blades? A. No. Not all diamond blades require water during cutting. However, if a blade is specified to run wet, you must feed water to it. Otherwise, you will destroy the blade, damage your saw and possibly kill or injure yourself. You can also run a dry cutting blade wet. This will decrease dust, cool the blade and increase its cutting speed and life. Q. My saw blade is not cutting. Is it defective? A. First, check to make sure the blade is not worn out. If it is, replace it. Second, if the blade is still good but not cutting, it means it’s glazed over. Run the blade through an abrasive material, like asphalt, masonry block, cinder block, sandstone or a dressing stick. This process is called “dressing” and will expose more diamonds in your blade’s cutting segments. If the
blade glazes over again, the bond of the blade is too hard for the material being cut and will need to be dressed again. Q. Where can I find a dressing stick? A. Dressing sticks can be found at construction equipment stores that sell diamond saw blades. If you don’t have a dressing stick, you can make a few cuts in an abrasive material such as asphalt or cinder block instead. Q. What is the bond of a diamond blade? A. The bond is the combination of metals used to make up a diamond-impregnated segment. Q. Can I choose a different bond to make my blade cut faster or last longer? A. Yes. The speed and the life of the blade can be maximized by matching your blade’s bond to the material being cut. Generally speaking, you should use a harder-bond blade to cut soft and/or abrasive materials like asphalt, block and sandstone and a softer-bond blade to cut hard, dense and/or nonabrasive materials like concrete, stone and brick. Q. If I accidentally run my saw blade backwards, will it ruin my blade? A. Not necessarily. As long as the blade has not been cracked, chipped or warped, it should still be good. Q. What is the difference between electroplated, brazed and sintered diamond blades? A. Electroplated and brazed blades are almost the same. They utilize the same process for applying diamonds to metal surfaces using a bonding agent, usually nickel. Sintered blades have diamondimpregnated segments that are attached to the steel core by heating a powdered chemical to its melting point. Impregnated diamond blades are blades made of a matrix diamond and metal. As you cut, the metal wears away to expose new diamonds. Sintering is an inexpensive, low-quality manufacturing process.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A. Yes. To cut all materials safely, use Desert Diamond Industry’s Safety Blade (see pages 1 and 4). It has a one-piece steel construction that won’t break during operation, unlike abrasive, carbide and segmented diamond blades. It’s designed to cut braces, flat stock, hardened lock shackles and padlock bodies, hockey puck locks, security gates, rebar, chain link fence, stucco, concrete, block, brick, stone, asphalt, wood, drywall, car doors, ductile iron, cast iron, schedule 40 and 80 pipe, PVC, HDPE, C-900 plastic pipes, 2x4s, plywood… and more!
Vacuum-Brazing Q. What is a vacuum-brazed diamond saw blade? A. Vacuum-brazed diamond saw blades have their diamonds attached to their steel cores via a vacuumbrazing process that’s similar to dipping an ice cream cone in sprinkles. These blades have all their diamonds on the exterior of their cutting edges, instead of buried in a metal bond. This manufacturing process is higher quality and more expensive than sintering and electroplating. Most vacuum-brazed blade manufacturers vacuum-braze individual segments, then laser weld those diamond segments to a steel core. Q. What will a vacuum-brazed diamond blade cut? A. Depending on the cutting applications recommended by the manufacturer, these blades can cut concrete, brick, block, stone, asphalt, ductile iron, cast iron, plastic, stainless steel, hardened steel, copper, brass, wood, glass, tile, porcelain and more. You don’t have to match a vacuum-brazed blade’s bonds to the materials that you’re cutting. One blade fits all. However, you should still check your blade’s cutting application sheet before attempting to use your blade on any of the above materials.
Q. How can I tell when a vacuum-brazed blade is worn out? A. Check to see if the cutting edge has diamond on it. If it’s smooth with no abrasiveness (see page 52, Know When to Replace Your Safety Blade), it needs to be replaced. Call (800) 654-5890 or visit our website at http://www.desertdiamondindustries.com for a replacement. Q. Is it true that the Safety Blade has no welded segments? A. Yes. The Safety Blade is the first and only blade on the market that does not have cutting segments welded to a steel core. This eliminates injuries and fatalities from segment loss. Q. Do you have a Life Time Operator Error Warranty™? If so, what does it cover? A. Desert Diamond Industries offers the first and only Life Time Operator Error Warranty™ in the industry on select blades. It covers any accident that may occur in the field (e.g. dropping the saw, pinching the blade and prying it out of the cut, etc.). See page 60 for details. Q. What should I do if my blade breaks, chips, warps or wobbles? A. Call your blade supplier. They should replace it for free. If they don't, you probably shouldn’t buy from them again.
Q. Can vacuum-brazed blades be made as thin as electroplated saw blades? A. No. They can be made thin, but not as thin as electroplated saw blades. That’s because the intense heat and pressure in a vacuum-brazing furnace can cause thin metal to warp. Only the highest quality steel above a certain thickness can withstand the vacuum-brazing process. Q. Does the grit size effect the cutting performance of vacuum-brazed blades? A. Yes. The size of the diamond grit used will determine if the finished cut will be smooth and finished or rough and unfinished. Smaller grit will give you a smoother, cleaner finish but will cut slower than a blade with a larger grit. Larger grit, on the other hand, will give you a rough finish but will cut very fast for you. Q. Is there a diamond blade that will safely cut everything?
Page 36
(800) 654-5890
http://www.desertdiamondindustries.com
Q. Is it better to use an abrasive blade or a diamond blade? A. Always use a diamond blade whenever possible. Desert Diamond Industries’ Safety Blades will outlast a minimum of 150 abrasive blades and will not shatter during cutting, unlike abrasive blades. They also produce less sparks than abrasives and lower your costs. Q. Can I wear safety glasses rather than goggles for protection while using an angle grinder? A. No. Safety glasses are only suitable for protecting part of the eye. They don’t protect against particulates getting in from the top, bottom or sides. Goggles offer provide full eye protection from all sides, as well as an elastic band to keep them on your head. (See our line of LIFT safety glasses and goggles on pages 41-42) Q. What is the difference between abrasive blades and diamond blades? A. Abrasive blades are commonly made of silicon carbide and/or aluminum oxide along with other materials bonded with resin and mesh to form a disc. This disc wears away quickly during cutting, which is very dangerous and hazardous. A diamond blade, on the other hand, is made of steel and diamond. The cutting edge of the blade is called a bond or matrix and is made of a mixture of diamond and metals that is designed to cut a specific range of materials. Diamond blades can last 100 to 1,000 times longer than abrasive blades and emit very few sparks and no cancer-causing silicon carbide fibers during cutting. Q. What causes the most eye injuries? A. Bureau of Labor statistics show that almost 70% of accidents resulted from flying or falling objects or sparks striking the eye. 40% of these injured workers were wearing some form of eye protection when the accident occurred. Q. How safe is a diamond saw blade? A. Based on OSHA statistics, an employee is 6.3 times more likely to be killed by a shattering abrasive blade than a breaking diamond blade, as well as 13 times more likely to
receive an injury serious enough to require hospitalization. Nonetheless, you must still take care when operating any piece of equipment, as serious injury or death may still occur. Q. When should I wear ear defenders or ear plugs? A. Anyone exposed to noise greater than 85 dBA should wear some form of hearing protection. (See our line of LIFT hearing protection on page 39) Q. Should I use an abrasive blade for cutting asphalt or concrete because they are cheaper? A. No. You should never use an abrasive blade for cutting any material, whether it is concrete, asphalt, masonry, stone, metal, iron or anything. Abrasive blades are one of if not the most dangerous blades. Not only can they kick back like a diamond blade, but they can also shatter, endangering your safet and your life. They also emit clouds of cancer-causing silicon carbide fibers and emit 10-to-25-foot showers of sparks while cutting. Q. Is there any legislation that requires me to wear gloves when using a power tool? A. No, but it simply makes sense to do so. There are no safety standards with regard to general rigger gloves, but in case of an accident they may afford some protection, however minimal. (See our line of LIFT work gloves on pages 34-38) Q. How can I tell if my blades have welded diamond segments? A. Look at the cutting edge closely. If your blade is welded, you’ll notice a gap between the steel core and the cutting edge. This gap is the weld and is generally where a blade will break. Q. The directional arrows on my used saw blade are worn off. How can I tell which way to mount it? A. The easiest way is to slowly run your finger back and forth along the cutting edge. Whichever direction feels the roughest is the direction the blade should be spinning. Q. Why is the hole in the center of my blade too small for my handheld saw? A. It might be because your blade has a true 20mm arbor hole. Check the saw blade and make sure that there isn’t a bushing in the arbor hole that reduces it to 20mm. If there is no bushing, contact your blade supplier and exchange your blade for one with a 1” arbor hole.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Safety Q. Should I use a guard with my diamond blade? A. Yes, always. It will help protect you from small debris and dust during cutting. Keep in mind, though, that if a diamond blade breaks, then the pieces can and will go through the guard and cause an injury or fatality.
