CHANGE AND CONTINUITY

O

n the first day of school this year, I greeted students in every section, introducing myself to families and watching closely to learn as much as possible about my new school home. At the new Early Childhood Center, the Maternelle, I saw students explore a new space designed just for them: three, four and five year-olds dashed across the courtyards, climbed on new play structures, and explored sunny classrooms as they settled in to school. One little boy stopped short in the door of his Kindergarten classroom and tugged on his father’s hand. “Look,” he said, “it’s the same, but even better!” That idea – of change and continuity, together – is what this year has been about for French American International School and International High School. It has been a year of important changes. I came on board as we realized a long-term goal in the construction of our Maternelle at 1155 Page Street. The new campus allowed us to add an additional section of Pre-K3 to meet increased demand, especially from the French community. With the departure of our youngest students from 150 Oak Street, we made significant improvements at the main campus, creating new community and STEM learning spaces. With the production of a school-wide theater project; the introduction of design technology in the High School; the introduction of a new third language, Arabic, in the Middle School; and the development of science learning in a new science lab and tinkering space in the Lower School, we solidified our role as Bay Area leaders in artistic, curricular and pedagogical innovation. Our students in Pre-K to 12th grade have felt the positive impact of these changes.

Yet the most important things about our school have remained constant this year. Our community retains the vibrant diversity and academic excellence that make us a school of choice in the Bay Area and a school of renown across the world. The critical relevance of our mission, with its emphasis on diversity, cross-cultural communication and internationalism, has been proven by events across the world this year. The academic rigor of our bilingual and baccalaureate programs and the excellence of our teachers’ work are evinced by our students’ many achievements: scores that meet or exceed national and international averages on the Brevet, French Bac, and International Baccalaureate exams, and college admissions at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Sciences Po and other selective universities world-wide. Our Board’s continuous stewardship is evident in our robust enrollment, our important fundraising for both annual fund and capital campaign, the steady growth of our endowment and our investment in property, all of which ensure our financial sustainability at a time when many schools continue to struggle financially. Change and continuity will ensure our future as well. Combining the strengths of French and American education, cultivating an international school culture and embracing the innovative spirit of San Francisco, we are positioned not only for continued excellence but also for leadership among independent schools in the Bay Area and international schools around the world. Your engagement and giving make this extraordinary education possible for all our current students and for those who will follow them – on both of our campuses. Thank you! MELINDA BIHN, Ed.D. COMMUNIQUÉ 2013-2014 FRENCH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL | 3

L

Merci !

endowment

endowment fund annual report FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2014 ENDOWMENT IN ACTION Endowment income produces a stable, permanent, reliable flow of money that allows an institution to better plan for current students and for generations to come. A healthy endowment adequately supports financial aid, facility maintenance and improvements, educational programs, and teachers. In a nutshell, a healthy endowment is an insurance policy against tumultuous financial markets and swings in enrollment, and provides greater budget flexibility. In 2014 we transferred $207,000 from the endowment to the school, representing approximately 1% of our annual operating budget. Our students benefit from a strong endowment as the school is better able to fund financial aid needs, enhance our academic and athletic programming and keep up with advances in technology and science. Our teachers benefit as the school is better able to provide more professional development opportunities. % of

INVESTMENT PERSPECTIVE As the above table shows, the endowment was up over our 12-month fiscal year (from July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014) from an investment perspective. Investment returns (i.e. dividends, interest, and capital gains) were up 15.16% in total. The fees paid to our investment consultant and accountant cost 0.45%. Note that the endowment invests in mutual funds, and the investment return of 15.16% is net of mutual fund fees. Over the long term, we expect the endowment to earn at least 4% above educational inflation, but with considerable variation from year to year. We transfer 4% on average to the school every year, but use a spending rule that damps down volatility, so the amount transferred each year varies much less than the variability in endowment returns. In 2014, using the spending rule, we transferred $207,000, or 3.45%, to the school.

FRENCH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNIQUÉ 2013-2014

As to why the endowment was up 15.16% before expenses and transfers, we currently manage the endowment to a target asset allocation of 35% fixed income, 32.5% domestic equity, 25% international equity, and 7.5% real assets. This asset allocation provides expected returns of 4% above education inflation over time, while including sufficient diversification to limit volatility. Over this 12-month period, equity markets in particular delivered strong performance, and that, combined with our asset allocation led directly to this year’s investment double-digit performance:

Our actual investment performance lagged our policy allocation by 0.62%. But given that we pay our investment manager 0.45%, and we pay mutual fund fees on top of that, our performance relative to this benchmark looks reasonable.

GOALS FOR THE ENDOWMENT Over the past several years, thanks to the generosity of our community, we have seen significant growth in our endowment. However, our endowment is well below the median of comparable Bay Area schools and we plan to make a concerted effort to further build our endowment over the next five years. An endowment of $15 million would bring us up to the median and would contribute approximately $600,000 to the school’s budget annually. With that kind of funding, French American and International would be better able to reinvest in the school’s most important assets: students and teachers. With your support we can enhance the school’s financial position and provide an unparalleled education year after year.

CAMPAIGN FOR FRENCH AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL

W

e believe in the strength of our program. Bilingual immersion, academic rigor, diversity, and cross cultural communication culminate in the highly valued International Baccalaureate or French Baccalaureate degree. Our teachers and families represent over 50 nationalities and a multitude of perspectives. Our school’s mission, focused on preparing students for the global realities of life in the 21st century, has never been more important. At each level of the school we challenge our students to think critically and creatively, act independently and responsibly, and question the apparent. What we teach and how we teach remains as relevant as ever, but by enhancing the environment in which we teach we believe we can help our students accomplish even more. Our current facilities projects have transformed the learning environment for our students.

MATERNELLE (1155 PAGE STREET) Our purpose-built campus for our 3 to 6 year olds opened in September 2014. Influenced by how children learn best, the building’s design enables us to deliver our globally recognized French immersion program in a creative, age-appropriate, nurturing environment. The Maternelle’s 10,000 square feet includes nine classrooms bathed in natural light, each with direct access to the outdoors, two play yards and a large multi-purpose room. The scale and design of the building blurs the lines between work and play and offers children room to explore – stimulating curiosity while helping to develop confidence and independence at an early age.

MAIN CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS (150 OAK STREET) With the Pre-K3, Pre-K and Kindergarten classes moved to their new campus, approximately 6,500 square feet of space has

been redesigned to offer more innovative, flexible, and interactive learning spaces for our older students, enhancing our programming in the sciences, the arts, and collaborative learning. Highlights of this project include: ■

The Design Lab where science, technology and design intersect – supporting ingenuity, creativity, hands-on learning, and problem solving

A dedicated science lab and Tinker Space for our elementary school – helping inquisitive minds better understand how the world works

Flexible classroom/recreation spaces – encouraging peer-topeer learning, increased interaction across grades, and opportunities to further develop our sense of community

TRANSFORMING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE In our 52 years of existence we have moved, renovated, and created facilities to complement and enhance our program. We have grown from a single-room school to a thriving urban institution, but this has not been growth for growth’s sake. The size of the school, the structure of our program, our gymnasium, the Arts Pavilion, libraries, science labs, and student space are all improvements that delivered increased opportunities to our students. Our current project is no different. Each facet - construction of a new Maternelle, improvements to our 150 Oak Street campus, and the growth of our endowment fund - plays a critical role in transforming the student experience. Together we will complete this much anticipated project and continue to strengthen this highly successful educational institution. We hope you will be a part of our success. GIFTS RECEIVED JULY 1, 2013 THROUGH JUNE 30, 2014 The Annual Fund is French American and International’s single largest fundraising initiative, supported by donors from every constituency. We are extraordinarily grateful to our current families for their generosity and commitment to the Annual Fund and to the many alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, faculty, and staff who believe in the impact their contributions have on our school. The Annual Fund supports many aspects of the school, but at its heart, it allows us to continually invest in our programs, teachers and, most importantly, our students. Thank you! We would like to extend special thanks to the dedicated volunteers of the 2013-2014 Annual Fund who supported our efforts as class representatives, phoneathon volunteers, and all-around advocates for our dynamic program.

alumni spotlight JULIA HAMMERSCHLAG

A

CLASS OF 2004

fter spending thirteen of my most formative years at French American International School, I moved to L.A. to pursue a degree in psychology at Occidental College. Guided by an innate curiosity for understanding human behavior, I serendipitously landed a position after graduation at a boutique brand strategy consultancy in San Francisco and spent the next five years working intimately with clients across all sectors, from billion-dollar consumer product brands to non-profits. Most recently, I accepted a position working for a start-up accelerator called Techstars in Chicago, which is an intensive program helping seed-stage companies build their businesses. My experience at International High School fundamentally shaped the way in which I approach, frame and solve for complexity. International provided a singular education that embraced each student’s inherent uniqueness, opened our lens beyond the confines of our four walls and rewarded strategic thought in a way that was never prescriptive. On a fundamental level, we were taught to “think different,” which is one of the most valued skills in business. In an effort to re-connect with our class, Angela Reston-Nuñez and I are hosting our ten-year high school reunion (the first ten-year reunion in the school’s history). We’ve both managed to stay connected with our class (I just spent a few weeks in Europe visiting three other high school classmates) and wanted to create an opportunity for us to reflect on how our experience at International has shaped who we’ve become today.

ANGELA RESTON-NUÑEZ

CLASS OF 2004

I started at French American in Kindergarten when we

were still at the Buchanan Street campus, so I am what we consider a “lifer.” Two of my most memorable teachers at International High School were Antoine Delaitre and Richard Ulffers, whose classes inspired me to major in History when I went to college. One of my most memorable experiences was staying up until

Julia Hammerschlag (left) and Angela Reston-Nuñez, Class of 2004 midnight on New Years Eve 2000 with my fellow 8th grade classmate Madeline Nossiter, to finish our Berlin Wall project for Mr. Delaitre’s History class, for which I am happy to report we received a perfect grade of 20/20! Another memorable experience was having our teacher Kara Hathaway chaperone our 8th grade exchange trip to Paris. I kept in touch with Ms. Hathaway after high school, and saw her several times in Madrid when she was teaching there, and I was there to visit my grandparents. The 10th grade class exchange to Tahiti was also one of my best experiences. One of the correspondent’s fathers set up a private tour of Marlon Brando’s Tahitian islands for Julia Hammerschlag, Madeline Nossiter and myself. We walked from island to island, and the water never went past our knees. It was a truly amazing experience. In 2008 I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a Major in History, and, in May of 2013, received my law degree from the University of San Francisco Law School. I’m proud to report that I passed the California bar exam the first time! I am currently working in downtown San Francisco as a plaintiff attorney specializing in class action wage and hour cases. I’m engaged to a Lick-Wilmerding grad I met in college, and we plan to get married in Napa Valley in the summer of 2015. My best friends are still the ones I made at French American and International. We still get together on a monthly basis, and often reminisce about our amazing experience there.
