[ 4 ] what research tells us is important to model for and instil in our students. Miss West’s vision, bold and courageous in the social, cultural and political landscape of the early 20th century, remains vitally relevant in 2022.

On the School’s first birthday, June 1st, 1914, she wrote: However important the staff and the girls may be, the school is more comprehensive: it is more intangible, more lasting, more impersonal than a collection of individuals. It has its own soul, its own life, and we hope will continue in years to come, when we individuals are no longer here, an influence making itself felt in the world. In a rapidly changing world, requiring flexibility and adaptability, Frensham Schools’ commitment to delivering world-class education remains steadfast and we are sustained by the assistance of all our donors and supporters. On behalf of the entire Frensham Schools community—students, staff and alumni (Old Girls of Frensham and both boys and girls who attended Gib Gate) I would like to thank you for your continued commitment and invaluable support of our students and staff. The inspiration of the vision of our founder, Winifred West, is central to Frensham Schools, with a mission, ethos and values that resonate entirely with

Philanthropic gifts received are at the discretion of the donor in support of bursaries (Educational Grants), buildings or other special projects undertaken by the School. All gifts make a difference to our support of initiatives that positively impact the education of young people. This report—the first of its kind produced for Frensham Schools—highlights the myriad forms of support allowing us to continue pursuing Miss West’s vision into the future.

To all of you who have supported the initiatives of Frensham Schools— thank you! Sarah McGarry

IMPACT OF GIVING

All gifts make a difference to our support of initiatives that positively impact the education of young people. This institution is a place of great learning, creative innovation, care and celebration of the individual as well as the collective—and I acknowledge work of generations before all of us who have laid those foundations in developing a culture that is centred upon relationships, servant leadership and high performance—a positive culture that is underpinned by a deep love for Gib Gate, Frensham and Sturt. Income from tuition fees covers the operating and general costs of the School, while philanthropic giving transforms our school environment and the learning experience for our students. Every gift, no matter its size, contributes to the future of our students and Frensham Schools. This, in turn, benefits wider society into the future.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2021

Join with Us

As Chair of Winifred West Schools Foundation, I am proud to bring you Foundation’s first ever Impact of Giving publication. I think many may be surprised to learn about the wide variety of ways in which Foundation is supported by our donors. The stories you will read also describe the difference that such giving makes—the impact that these gifts have had today, and will continue to have for years into the future. Last year, our Annual Appeal was in support of Bursaries, and we encouraged everyone to ‘Join with Us’ and help change a child’s life. We also had two incredible major gifts to support Bursaries at Frensham. These gifts have gone to three students who really would not otherwise have had the chance of a Frensham education. As the girls continue their journey at school and beyond, we have no doubt that the impact of these gifts will be felt for decades to come. In the story of Alice Hood (2014), you will read about the lifechanging impact of the gift of a Frensham education.

Beyond bursaries, Foundation has received generous support from our donors for several building projects over the years. In this issue we take a look at our Centenary Pool—a facility that students across both Frensham and Gib Gate, as well as the wider community, benefit from today.

One of the biggest initiatives of 2021 was the launch of our newly-formed bequest group, The Winifred West Legacy. While the bequest group is new, it is important to note that The Winifred West Legacy acknowledges the long history of bequest gifts to the School, and formalises that by bringing our Bequestors together as a Wegroup.call our Bequestors ‘Custodians’, because a custodian is someone who takes care of something. Beginning in 2022, we will now hold an annual luncheon for our Custodians to celebrate their ongoing, and much-appreciated, 2021support.also saw significant gifts made to Sturt, one of which was given in support of Sturt Pottery. As a result of this gift, the entire area has been strengthened. You will read about how this new community space is now the heart of Sturt Pottery and has helped to re-energise pottery as a whole. The stories you will read describe the difference that giving makes—the impact that these gifts have had today, and will continue to have for years into the future.

The Livestock Enterprise is one of our flagship fundraising initiatives, but the prolonged drought had taken its toll. Finally, in 2020 and 2021 we saw the drought breaking and farmers working to 2022re-stock.will see a campaign to actively grow the number of Host families (rural families who ‘host’ our cattle and our sheep before going to market) and I would like to encourage our urban families to financially support the Livestock Enterprise. It’s a fantastic support of our donors is a powerful driver of all the initiatives Foundation undertakes to help support excellence in education at Frensham Schools. As a result of the Foundation Scholarship for Professional Learning, this year eight teachers from across Gib Gate and Frensham campuses were able to attend a full weekend of virtual presentations by leading researchers. These teachers joined in the Project Zero Harvard Graduate School of Education Conference entitled EDUCATION THAT MATTERS. The conference was held over the weekend of Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 March 2022 and was attended by (pictured below l-r): Jenny O’Rourke (Year 3 teacher), Benita Neilson (Year 4 teacher), Ruth Phillips (Academic-inResidence P-12), Kerry Lennon (Director of Languages P-12), Lee McGuinness (Head of English), Kate Chauncy (Director of Teaching & Learning and Gifted & Talented Programme P-12), Lynn Venish (Year 6 teacher) and Alison Andrew (Head of Science).

1. To meet the individual learning needs of all students by personalising programmes, experiences and outcomes; 2. To engage actively in promoting the School’s culture of thinking through shared purpose, commitment, engagement and challenge; 3. To encourage every student and member of staff to have a growthorientated mind set; 4. To develop leadership capacity in all students and staff; and 5. To create a learning community which is world-class and embraces innovation, inspired by evidence-based research and external critique. We have a long-standing collaboration with the Making Thinking Visible and Cultures of Thinking projects at Harvard, as well as the authors of the texts used by all teachers, by consultants Ron Ritchhart and Mark Church, in our continuing work P-12 in our Teacher Learning Communities (TLCs). Accordingly, we looked forward to hearing from, and collaborating with, the eminent list of leading researchers including David Perkins, Flossie Chua, Shari Tishman, Carrie James and Veronica Boix Mansilla.

Each of the attendees are continuing leaders of our 2022 TLC groups. They all inspire and guide our teachers to make our schools places in which we not only meet curricular goals for our students from Preschool to Year 12, but also shape their development as powerful thinkers and learners in an ever-changing contemporary world. Foundation’s Staff Scholarship Programme has been in place for 14 years now, since 2008. Each of the attendees wanted to take this opportunity to thank Foundation for its ongoing support of their professional learning.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2021

Agenerous gift to establish our first ever Frensham Rural Bursary, represented a watershed moment in Frensham’s history. The Bursary was established for a girl to commence Year 7 in 2022, and will provide for full Bursary support. Furthermore, the Bursary will support the girl from Year 7 through to Year 12. Careful consideration was given to the successful recipient by the Head of Frensham Schools. The girl selected was already demonstrating a strong commitment to love and service, even in her primary school years. The Principal at the recipient’s Primary School said: “This little girl is one of the most exceptional young ladies I have taught. She is thirsty for knowledge beyond any reasonable expectation for a child of her age. She is curious to know as much as she can about her world, making her a delight to teach.

A generous gift to establish our first ever Frensham Rural Bursary, represented a watershed moment in Frensham’s history.

When we asked why the donor family decided to establish this Bursary they said, “The special feeling of contributing to the Frensham education and experience for a rural student who otherwise may not have had this opportunity gives us great pleasure.” Foundation and Frensham Schools are extremely grateful for the establishment of this inaugural Frensham Rural Bursary.

She attends all community events, including helping the P&C at market stalls, marching at Anzac Day, and taking part in all fundraisers. She performs well above expectations in every subject at school. She devours books, and this is reflected in her excellent expression and fluency when that this young lady is going to achieve amazing things in her life and will be one of the most inspirational students that you could have the pleasure of teaching.”

In the months and years ahead, we are looking forward to keeping our donor family informed of how this student is enjoying her time at Frensham.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2021

For boarders and for ‘day boarders’—who are fully connected to House life but don’t sleep over—Frensham provides an incredibly special community experience. This is attested to by Old Girls the world over, who repeatedly tell us how “lucky” they feel to have had the opportunity to learn and live in residence at Frensham.

NICHO’S BOARDING BURSARY

In consultation with the Head of School, it was decided that this Educational Grant would provide 100% assistance with Boarding fees … and has been affectionately named Nicho’s Boarding Bursary.

The family who established this Bursary in 2021 has a very long and strong connection to the School, and so deeply understood the benefits of boarding at InFrensham.consultation with the Head of School, it was decided that their support would provide assistance with Boarding fees for two girls entering Year 7 in 2022. This Bursary will support both girls throughout high school, from Year 7 to Year 12 and has been affectionately named Nicho’s Boarding Bursary

The unique elements of Frensham as a boarding school are enduring, and are increasingly sought after by parents. With more than 70 percent of students in residence, our boarding tradition sets us apart.

As the three girls who are benefiting from our Frensham Rural Bursary and Nicho’s Boarding Bursary undertake their respective journeys through Frensham and beyond, we wish them all the very best. We feel certain that the impact of these two gifts will be felt for years to come. Over time, we dearly hope that these two Leadership Gifts will inspire others in our community to follow that lead. Careful consideration was given to the successful recipients. This is a meanstested Educational Grant, and meritbased, so the girls selected are worthy

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

The girls were particularly looking forward to boarding, which they felt would provide them with the opportunity to meet people from a wide range of different places, to make new friends, and to improve in their schooling habits. We are thankful for the establishment of Nicho’s Boarding Bursary. It is testament to the power of philanthropy that an Educational Grant such as this can really make a difference in another’s life. It will be a joy for us to let the donor family know how the girls are enjoying their time at Frensham, as they grow from young girls into young women with the world at their feet.

BothAll-Rounders.girlsalready demonstrated the qualities of a Frensham student by being active and compassionate in recognising the needs of others at their respective primary schools, and leading by example. The recipients of Nicho’s Boarding Bursary both live in regional NSW. Throughout their primary school years, these girls have participated in a wide range of activities such as Drama, Visual Arts and Music, as well as a variety of sports, including swimming, cricket, touch football, netball and soccer.

OF GIVING 2021

Foundation’s Bursary Fund offers students from rural Australia an opportunity to experience the exceptional advantages of a Frensham education through Educational Grants. We would like to share with you the story of one girl, and the impact that support from Foundation has made in her life since leaving school. Alice Hood, Head Girl in 2014, hails from a farm in the small town of Bombala in southern New South Wales. After leaving Frensham, Alice completed a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of New South Wales. During her time at university, Alice undertook several work placements. These included a summer vacation programme with Snowy Hydro, a trip to Uganda to learn about the local culture and design an irrigation system for a farm, and part-time work as an undergraduate site engineer for a construction company. Alice also spent time working for GHD Group Pty Ltd in the Geotechnics team. Alice has now graduated from University and has started a job as a graduate site engineer working for Lendlease. She is working on the Randwick Campus Redevelopment, which is a new acute services hospital.

IMPACT

Frensham provided me with invaluable opportunities at school, as well as after school. The sporting, musical, community service and academic choices that the School provided were some aspects of Frensham that were simply not available to me in my home town.

To be able to gain access to all of those opportunities without moving to a city is a unique aspect of Frensham.

Reflecting recently on the opportunity to attend Frensham, Alice shared with us what she valued most:

Theidentity.community is a mixture of rural, city and international students. This gave me a variety of perspectives and opened my mind to many life directions I would not have otherwise considered.

Frensham is also in the unique position to equally inspire students to follow rural, city and international career paths, all of which have been taken up by members of my cohort. I value the fact that the School does not box its students in, but instead opens their minds to the possibilities that life has in store for them.

The experiences and perspectives I gained at Frensham have carried with me, and have stood me in good stead for my future.”

• Alice is living our motto, ‘In Love Serve One Another’, which calls on our students to develop their talents and use them to make a meaningful contribution, for the common good. Alice is doing just that, and she will have so much to contribute to others in the years ahead. • Her outstanding academic success is testament to the academic rigour of her Frensham education. Undoubtedly, the impact of Alice’s support at Frensham will be felt for decades to come, as she forges her way in the world. Her testimonial demonstrates just how life-changing the gift of a Frensham education can be for a girl from rural Australia.

Philanthropy:SHOULDERSONAretrospective

When you take a look around the beautiful grounds of our three schools— Frensham, Gib Gate and Sturt—there is no doubt that we are incredibly fortunate to benefit from the support of those who came before us: our beautiful gardens, our buildings and our facilities.

2021

Frensham Schools has a strong history, much of which has been enabled by the far-sighted generosity of others—we are standing on the shoulders of those who came before us.

When Clubbe Hall was built in 1967, it gave our community a unique opportunity to provide the Schools’ community with a magnificent performance space, as well as a facility that is shared with the wider community. In 2013, that same philosophy of sharing our facilities with the wider community was an important factor in one of our most ambitious philanthropic projects in the history of our Schools.

IMPACT OF GIVING

[ 33 ]

An extraordinary ‘Pool Party’ was held in Clubbe Hall, with coloured lanterns, staff wearing pool toy rings, a, ‘Speedo’ clock on the wall, and a faux diving board on stage, just to name a few items. It was ‘the party you have when you want a pool’.

With the tag line—‘Every drop helps’ —our community responded generously, and today every family in our schools benefits from our wonderful Centenary Pool, as well as a the wider community.

To mark Frensham’s Centenary in 2013, Foundation wanted to help build The Centenary Pool—a first-class indoor swimming facility. The Centenary Pool gave Foundation the opportunity, once again, to provide both our Schools and the wider community with a facility previously not available— an indoor heated swimming complex for training and therapeutic purposes. The main pool was also built to accommodate water polo, and a second pool was built to accommodate swimming lessons for younger children.

She was a remarkable and courageous woman who encouraged each student to be active and compassionate in recognising the needs of others, responding with generosity and integrity, and leading by example. These are all qualities that we see at the core of The Winifred West Legacy

We call our bequestors ‘Custodians’, because a custodian is someone who takes care of something. It was a glorious day in the Southern Highlands, and the guests were delighted to be able to gather together once again after such a long period since COVID put an end to such events. We were also grateful for the generous support of the Berkelouw family, in helping us to host the event at Bendooley Estate. Guests were welcomed by Ms Libby Stuart, Chair of the Board of Governors, and were then thrilled to hear the Madrigals perform. The girls enjoyed the novelty of being able to rehearse and perform properly again. The item prepared was an arrangement of an Aretha Franklin song Since You’ve Been Gone, featuring the Head of Madrigals, Grace Amos, as soloist.

GIVING BACK one family decided to make the gift of a bequest I see The Winifred West Legacy as a good opportunity for us to give back to the School that has given us so much.

[ 42 ]

Why

The bequest to us is to help keep the school going—it’s so important. It’s very special to have a school like Frensham and it needs to be there in 20, 30, or 40 years’ time. It needs to be there because it’s so unique, and we wanted to be a part of that through our bequest.

Sue Morrison (Bragg, 1960)

Frensham has been part of my family going back four generations to the 1930s: my two aunts were there in the days of Miss West; me and my sister Pru were there in the ‘50s; our two girls in the ‘70s; and more recently, our two Frenshamgranddaughters.hascertainly changed— through ambitious building projects; and academically, where Frensham has made giant strides. While results are paramount, extracurricular activities such as Sport, Art and Music add balance.

My husband, Tony, and I are delighted to join The Winifred West Legacy through making our bequest gift to the School.

[ 43 ]

Tony and I wanted to make the bequest because we have both enjoyed the camaraderie of Frensham so much over the years. I think I was so lucky to be able to go to Frensham, and Tony and I were so lucky to be able to send our daughters there, and now our grandchildren.

‘In love serve one another’, builds enduring friendships, commitment, and character that last a lifetime. I see The Winifred West Legacy as a good opportunity for us to give back to the School that has given us so much.

Frensham singing still sends goosebumps up my spine, and those magnificent plays are However, fantastic.Frensham is more than that. It’s the ‘X’ factor, the ‘I don’t know what’, the ‘je ne sais quoi’—the amazing ‘something’ that is born in its beautiful bush setting, in Clubbe Hall, Sturt and the Holt.

The work primarily included making the anagama functional again, with the roof repaired and steps built around the kiln. Debris was removed, the ground evened and paved, and a Manchurian Pear shade tree Landscapingplanted. and outdoor furniture were added, creating a courtyard and inspiring outdoor place for community gatherings. One Friend of Sturt was so thrilled with the work, she donated $2,000 to provide extra plants for the landscaping.

As a result of this generous gift, Sturt Pottery has reinvigorated.beenThis new gathering space is now the heart of creativere-energisingpottery,thecommunity.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2021

Last year saw several major gifts to Sturt, under the leadership of our new Head of Sturt, Kristie Phelan. One donor family was inspired by the vision for pottery, and had confidence in Sturt’s commitment to providing the utmost care for the gift from conception, right through to execution. For decades, master potters have generously come to live and work at Sturt, sharing their skills with students. However, after many years, the renowned anagama (“cave”) kiln was crumbling, and the outdoor area needed attention. The pottery donation was gifted because the donors, Ian and Susie McIntosh, cared so much about the legacy of Sturt’s pioneering pottery, and wanted to contribute to the reinvigoration of this renowned design centre.

Kristie Phelan Head of Sturt

[ 46 ]

Ian and Susie went on to say, “When Kristie Phelan (fellow Friday potter) took over the reins at Sturt, we knew it was a perfect time to donate to this wonderful place, as her enthusiasm, energy and passion for Sturt Ceramics knows no Asbounds.”aresult, Sturt Pottery has been reinvigorated. This new space is now the heart of pottery, re-energising the creative community. The donors are receiving excellent stewardship being kept informed as the project progressed, and receiving ongoing feedback on the impact of the gift. Our first test firing of the anagama was held at the end of April, along with an allSturt Pottery community celebration. The anagama repair has enabled Sturt to invite a master anagama potter from Japan, Kazuya Ishida, as a resident for three months. He will live, teach and work at Sturt as the masters did many times before in Sturt’s history.

Kazuya Ishida at Sturt

An outdoor sink was added for working in the fresh air, as well as outdoor benches and tables. More kiln shelves were bought, along with much-needed banding wheels. Awnings were added to alleviate the western sun, and high windows were improved so that they could open for ventilation. Susie said, “Attending weekly pottery classes, as well as specialist workshops during the Summer and Winter School programmes, has given me the skills and confidence to set up my own studio practice. I often reflect on what an enormous privilege it is to have this gem of a place on our doorstep. It has been at the forefront of ceramics in Australia since its inception in 1941. Soaking up history and creative atmosphere reminds us at every turn of the extraordinary potters who have taught and resided there. There is learning to be had on every level—from the endlessly patient Head of Ceramics, Simon Bowley, to talking to and watching fellow potters sharing their problems and successes. And when one has run out of puff there is always the pleasure of a wander up to the gallery to be inspired by the very best of Australia’s ceramic artists.”

[ 47 ] We are delighted with the new courtyard and the repairs to the old anagama kiln that the hardworking Sturt team members have achieved. [ 47 ] Landscaping and outdoor furniture were added, creating a courtyard and inspiring outdoor place for community gatherings.

• Foundation pays for the stock. Donations of stock are also gratefully received.

• The proceeds of sale are then returned to Foundation.

This fundraising project is unique, and represents the very best of the Frensham Schools community resilience, integrity, and the heartfelt willingness to contribute to the welfare of others.

[ 49 ]

• ‘Host’ farming families take a minimum number of stock 5 cattle or 25 sheep.

One of Foundation’s flagship fundraising programmes is The Livestock Enterprise.

Beginning in 2014, the objective of the Livestock Enterprise is to raise funds to support the enrolment of girls from rural families, via Foundation’s Bursary Fund, who would not otherwise be able to give their daughter a Frensham education.

• The stock is managed by the Host in the normal course of their business.

• All transactions are processed by Jim Hindmarsh & Son who generously support Foundation, charging no commission.

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

Historically, this has been a very successful model providing extraordinary returns, often 50%-100%. Since 2014 the Livestock Enterprise has contributed over $200,000 to Foundation’s Bursary Fund. However, the prolonged drought took its toll and the project was placed on the back-burner for quite some time. Now that the horrendous drought has passed, for most people, we are hoping to reinvigorate the programme.

The Chair of Foundation, Scott Staniforth said, “I urge our rural families to get involved with this wonderful fundraising opportunity. If you can host just five head of cattle and/or 25 head of sheep, we would love to hear from you. It is only with your help that this project can Scottsucceed.”added, “To our urban families, I also encourage you to contribute much-needed funds to assist with stock purchases. By making this donation, a rural family can host the livestock and, over time, add significant value to your Non-farmersgift.”

Non-farmers donating, coupled with the contribution by our Host farmers, is the collaboration that makes this project so exciting and successful.

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION BEQUEST COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The Winifred West Legacy acknowledges the long history of bequest gifts to the School and formalises that history by bringing our bequestors together as a group.

The formation and success of Frensham Schools’ first ever bequest group has been largely due to the commitment and service of our four esteemed members of the Bequest Committee. We are extremely grateful for the sage advice of our Bequest Committee members, as they have helped to steer The Winifred West Legacy from inception to where it is today. All four of our Bequest Committee members are Custodians of The Winifred West Legacy.
