Philanthropy, at its core, is an act of kindness; it is about connection and community and, done well, brings great joy to both recipients and donors alike.

or some time now, we have been speaking about growing a culture of philanthropy at Frensham Schools. In 2022 that growth happened exponentially, in the most joyous and optimistic of ways. Perhaps the highlight was our ‘Giving Day’, where people from across our community and around the world contributed towards creating a historymaking moment at our Schools. With nearly half a million dollars raised for Foundation’s Bursary Fund in just 24 hours, a number of new students will now benefit from that support.

I am delighted to report that meanstested Educational Grants (our term for Bursaries) will be provided to students at both Frensham Junior School (Gib Gate campus) and Frensham. This is the first time that support has been offered at Frensham Junior School, and this gift will be made available to either a boy or a girl.

done well, brings great joy to both recipients and donors alike. Thank you to all who participated in Giving Day. Foundation also received myriad support in other ways last year—through the Winifred West Legacy, the Livestock Enterprise, gifts to Sturt, support for the development of teaching staff at our schools, and through the establishment of a number of new gifts.

Our goal is that these students will leave our schools with a strong academic foundation, as well as keen understanding of service, and how they can make a positive impact to people and our world. They will be well prepared for their future.

Thank you to all who supported Foundation in 2022. Geoff Marsh

I believe the benefits of a Frensham Schools education were succinctly summed up by Old Girl, Annabelle Chauncy (2003) who said:

Our goal is that these students will leave our schools with a strong academic foundation, as well as keen understanding of service, and how they can make a positive impact to people and our world.

We are so lucky to have been afforded a world class education that has set us up for success and it’s now our responsibility to pass that gift onto the next generation. Education is a never-ending gift, a gift that cannot be taken away. It is testament to the power of philanthropy that it can create such incredible change, for good. am pleased to report that Foundation had overwhelmingly positive feedback to our inaugural Impact of Giving publication last year. Many were inspired by the variety of ways in which Foundation is supported by our community today, and the impact that this growing level of support is having across the board. In 2022 Foundation undertook some bold initiatives, with extraordinary results. Perhaps the biggest fundraising project was our first ever 24-hour ‘Giving Day’. On Tuesday 20 September, we set an ambitious goal to raise $250,000 in just one day, in support of means-tested Educational Grants at Frensham Schools.

We had an amazing response from the Frensham Community—Old Girls, current parents and grandparents, past parents and friends—with the amazing result of $493,800 raised. These funds will now support a number of new students at both Frensham Junior School and Frensham, with the creation of a ‘353’ GDAY N Grant, ‘353’ representing the number of Matchers and donors who supported us.

Whenever you read about the ‘353 Grant’ in the future, you will know that you were one of the people who helped make that happen.

Indeed, our Giving Day has created history, as this is the first time that support is being offered at both Frensham and Frensham Junior School. Thank you so much to every single Matcher and Donor who contributed. Whenever you read about the 353 Grant in the future, you will know that you were one of the people who helped make that happen. The Winifred West Legacy also went from strength to strength in 2022. The first annual lunch for Custodians was held here in the Highlands at Peppers Manor House and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. We had a number of new Custodians join The Winifred West Legacy, and Foundation was most grateful to receive a bequest gift for ‘the benefit of children from isolated areas’.

you can read more about the project in this issue. On a more sombre note, it is with a heaviest of hearts that I report the passing of one of our Foundation Directors, Mr Peter Shorthouse. Peter gave several years of service, particularly in his leadership of Foundation’s Investment Committee. Foundation is in a very strong position today, and this is largely due to Peter’s great intellect and passion in his approach to fundraising at our School. Peter will certainly be missed by all associated with the Foundation Board who had the opportunity to know and work with him.

Last year, Mr David Uther OAM and Mrs Gillian Storey AM stepped down from the Bequest Committee. We thank both David and Gillian for their sage advice and their time, as we established and launched The Winifred West Legacy. I am delighted to report that Ms Jo Hawker (Joanne Perrottet, 1980) has joined the Bequest Committee and I look forward to working with Jo in the future.

I would like to thank all of our current Foundation Directors who will now build on Peter’s legacy. We are fortunate to have a group of outstanding individuals as Directors, who bring energy and enthusiasm to their service on the Foundation Board. With their contributions, I feel enormously optimistic about our vision to help support excellence at Frensham Schools in the years ahead.

The Livestock Enterprise is one of Foundation’s flagship fundraising initiatives, which supports the enrolment of rural girls who would not otherwise be able to attend Frensham. This Enterprise had been on the ‘back-burner’ for a number of years due to the ongoing drought. I am pleased to say that this Enterprise is now extremely active and

ailing from the small village of Wombat, with a population of about 220 people, the story of the Bolger family—father Matt, mother Genevieve (Gen), and daughters Millie (2020) and Alex (2021)—is testament to the importance of support for families, and the launching pad that this can provide. Millie was keen to go to Frensham. She had a passion for Music, particularly piano. However, she attended a local high school in Years 7 and 8, where there were no teachers for Music or Drama. ‘Those subjects simply weren’t taught, and we just had a free period instead.’ Gen said, ‘For both our girls, Music and Drama were so important, and so much a part of their lives.’ Millie had seen the Frensham school calendar at the Boarding Expo and she knew some older girls in the Wombat/ Harden/Young area who attended Frensham. ‘They were great people to be around, who really loved their families. They were so inspiring,’ Millie said, ‘and I wanted to be a Frensham girl.’ There are also many Frensham Old Girls in the local area. Millie said, ‘They have a heart and soul that is larger than life. The Iris is such a perfect symbol of the

Frensham spirit—to thrive and survive under all circumstances, and to put out a magnificent purple flower under conditions when others simply don’t.’ Gen also said, ‘I knew from friends in the local area, that this was the vision I wanted for my girls.’ When Millie was in Year 8, a local family wrote a beautiful letter of recommendation for her, and then the Bolger family began the application process for means-tested support. To the entire family’s great joy, Millie was awarded a place at Frensham, starting in Year 9.

In going through the application process, Matt said that a local friend gave him some sage advice—make sure you let them know that it’s not only one daughter. There are two. ‘And God love them,’ Matt said, ‘they made it possible for Alex to go to Frensham as well.’ Both Millie and Alex fondly recalled all of the ‘firsts’ that only a Frensham girl will experience—the first Iris presentation with the stomping and cheering (and, yes … tears); the first war cry practice in the Dining Room; the first Girdle; and your first birthday at Frensham, with all the other girls decorating your hat—such a special and beautiful tradition.

remain strongly connected to their local community. The girls both said that their closest friends come equally from the Frensham community as well as their local community.

And of course, Friday night activities— dressing up for the chosen theme each Friday and making outfits from whatever was available. This year, Millie celebrated her 21st birthday, the theme of which was Suits & Boots. Both Millie and Alex laughed—’Frensham girls can make and do anything!’

Matt was keen to also point out that they were a ‘new’ Frensham family. Unlike many other Frensham families, there was no history of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and cousins having attended. ‘However, we just loved it,’ Matt said. ‘We were so accepted, and everything we wanted was there. You don’t need to have an Old Girl in the family, to be an Old Girl.’

Gen went on to remind her daughters, ‘It’s not something you do. It’s something you are now.’ ‘We would never have been able to put the girls through Frensham without the support that we received. Looking after ill parents, both of us working full-time, trying to give your children the best possible education … we’ve just been so grateful,’ Gen said. Matt went on to say, ‘I will never forget the call I had from Patrick Duck, who is the Business Manager at Frensham. Suddenly we were part of a conversation that we never thought would be possible for us. It was only this assistance that made it feasible for our daughters to attend. We will be forever grateful to Frensham.’

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

Both Millie and Alex live life with one of the key lessons they learned at school—grit, gratitude and good humour. It’s almost ‘muscle memory’ for us now!

In life after Frensham, Millie is studying Radiography in Wagga, and Alex is studying Health Sciences at Canberra University, with a focus on Occupational Therapy. Millie undertook work experience in Radiography while at school and loved the work. Alex’s interest in Occupational Therapy was sparked by seeing her grandmother in aged care. From Year 9, having the ability to engage so positively with older people was something that came naturally to Alex and inspired her to follow that path in her tertiary studies. Today, Millie and Alex also run or swim every day, because it’s a habit—Frensham taught us to be well-balanced, finding equal time for studies and ‘laptop time’, as well as time spent outdoors, exercising, and in the Holt. We both have a vision to be strong and healthy—that Frensham routine ‘just stuck’. Talking to Millie and Alex, it was clear that the spirit of ‘In Love Serve One Another’ is also so much a part of them. In terms of the impact that these young women would like to have in their communities in the future, Millie said of her Radiography work, ‘I know already that I’ll work rurally. There is a lot less access in rural areas, so that’s where I can have the biggest impact.’ [ 17 ]

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

Alex said, ‘I’m a naturally bright and bubbly person, and I just hope that I can improve the quality of life for the people I am treating.’

T

he Chair of Foundation, Scott Staniforth, said ‘The pool of funds each year to support Scholarships and Educational Grants comes partly from Foundation, and partly from the operating funds of the School. I am so proud to say that the percentage being funded by Foundation is growing every year, reducing the need for funding from the School.

There is no doubt that both Millie and Alex live life with one of the key lessons they learned at school—grit, gratitude and good humour. ‘It’s almost “muscle memory” for us now!’ they both said. Gen said, ‘For our girls, having the advantage of a Frensham education, their generation is able to have a big vision of what they would like to do, what impact they would like to have—and they are so encouraged by their teachers at Frensham to go after that.’

Furthermore, Foundation’s funds go to families like the Bolgers. We are so grateful to those donors in the Frensham community who are helping us to grow the Bursary Fund and make even more opportunities available.

Gen went on to say affectionately to Millie and Alex, ‘You are champions for women. You’ll both be professional people and through your careers you will be able to have a big impact.’

We are actively seeking new support for the Bursary Fund—if you are in a position to help, and you would like to make a difference in the lives of students like Millie and Alex, please contact Foundation.’

Both Matt and Gen are clearly so proud when they look at their daughters and see the young women that Millie and Alex have become. This was perhaps best summed up by Matt in finishing our interview when he said, ‘We’re so proud of them—they’re making really good life choices.’

Annabel Chauncy (2003) once said: The richness of your life depends on how you’re able to use what you have to make a difference in the lives of others. When you give, you get so much more in return.

hank you… thank you… thank you.

We are so proud to have had the support of the entire Frensham Schools community for the inspiring and exciting event that was our first ever ‘Giving Day’.

Our target was to raise $250,000 on one day—Tuesday 20 September 2022.

Our aim was to raise funds in support of Educational Grants—a bespoke term we use at Frensham Schools, which is more commonly known as a means-tested Bursary.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we had a group of supporters who pledged to match donations on the day until we reached our target. Donations were tripled, so if a donor gave $100, the Bursary Fund received $300; $200 became $600, and so on.

Through our Educational Grants programme, a diverse range of students are given the opportunity of a Frensham education.

The result? A staggering $493,800 was raised in just 24 hours!

WHAT’S IN A NAME? The Elizabeth Pilcher (Causwell) Scholarship [ 26 ]

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

F

The Elizabeth Pilcher (Causwell) story

or many years now, Foundation has supported a range of Scholarship and Educational Grant (Bursary) opportunities for students at Frensham.

Elizabeth Pilcher (later Causwell) was born in August, 1920. She attended Frensham and completed her schooling in 1937.

Recently, Foundation is proud to have stewarded a significant increase in the number of named Scholarships and Educational Grants. This is taking place at Frensham and now, for the first time ever, also at Frensham Junior School.

The following year, Elizabeth began architecture studies at the University of Sydney and graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1945.

The most recently established named Scholarship has been created from the generous bequest of Elizabeth Pilcher (1937), a passionate Old Girl. This is a permanently endowed, means-tested Scholarship, which will be offered to deserving young girls who will contribute wholeheartedly to the life of the School.

Elizabeth was both courageous and adventurous—qualities strongly encouraged in Frensham girls by Winifred West. Accordingly, after finishing her studies in 1945, Elizabeth spent some time travelling. She then went on to complete studies at Harvard University, as well as a two-year post-graduate course in town planning at the Edinburgh College of Art in 1952. In December 1958, a prominent Canadian architectural firm, Green Blankstein Russell (GBR), brought Elizabeth from Sydney to Winnipeg, Canada, as Chief of their planning department—possibly the first person to hold such a position in a private architecture firm in Canada.

Elizabeth was both courageous and adventurous—qualities strongly encouraged in Frensham girls by Winifred West.

In 1962, Elizabeth spoke to the newspaper The Sun-Herald stating that

the lack of job opportunities for women in town planning had caused her to leave Australia for Canada. During her tenure with GBR, Elizabeth made a significant impact, working across Canada and North America. Described as quick moving and quick witted, Elizabeth wished to see people living in pleasant and inspiring environments—in the spirit of love and service, she wanted to make a difference. She was concerned with the sociological aspects of housing development and community design, as well as convenient, fast, and safe lines of communication between the home and workplace. Her projects with GBR included planning the Winnipeg International Air Terminal, as well as Winnipeg’s North South Freeway. Elizabeth’s architectural endeavours created a lasting mark on the built landscape of Canada. In 1964, Elizabeth moved to Jamaica where she was employed as a government planner until 1980. She returned to Australia in 1989.

Accordingly, this is a means-tested Scholarship. In seeking a student to benefit from the Pilcher Scholarship, we look for someone who has the potential to grow and contribute to the School, through their academic, creative, sporting or leadership pursuits.

We look for a student whose emerging strengths can be developed, while making a contribution to the life of the School and adding further to the diversity of the student body. Undoubtedly, the Pilcher Scholarship will benefit the individual students. Yet more than that, Elizabeth’s gift will enrich the whole School, with a diverse range of girls being given the opportunity of a Frensham education.

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

There is so much to celebrate, and we are deeply thankful to our Custodians for choosing to support Winifred West Schools Foundation.

Grounded in a long tradition of support from dedicated Old Girls, families and friends, The Winifred West Legacy is building upon these founding gifts. We are now entering a new era of growth, by celebrating the culture of philanthropy that has brought us this far, and by challenging ourselves to raise our sights even higher. There is so much to celebrate, and we are deeply thankful to our Custodians for choosing to support Winifred West Schools Foundation.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022 Churchill Fellowship provides an opportunity to travel overseas to explore a topic or issue about which they are passionate. Susan’s Fellowship (1978) was for twelve weeks, and she studied mainly pre-school education, particularly listening and speech. Ultimately, Susan went on to teach at The Shepherd Centre, a world-leading service provider in helping children with hearing loss learn to listen and speak.

As Susan considered becoming a Custodian and making a bequest gift to the School, she knew that her passion for music would be at the core of her gift, and that she wanted to help students excel in Music at Frensham. Her ideas began to take shape.

WELCOME! Introducing one of our newest Custodians, Susan Upton

Accordingly, Susan’s bequest is for the purpose of advancing musical education at Frensham. Her bequest will assist promising students who may otherwise lack the means to have an opportunity to progress their education in music.

In February 2022, Foundation was delighted to welcome one of our newest Custodians to The Winifred West Legacy—Susan Upton (Mathews, 1955). Susan is an Old Girl, Fellowship Year Representative, Past Governor of Frensham Schools and a Special Company Member.

Foundation is incredibly grateful for Susan’s thoughtful gift to the School. How wonderful it is to know that at some time in the future, her bequest gift will go towards helping students who share Susan’s passion for music to excel in this field.

As a member of the Class of 1955 Susan said that her Year group is particularly close, happily gathering together for many years since leaving Frensham.

The impact of Susan’s gift will be felt for years to come, as the Music students who benefit from this warm generosity make their way in the world.

Susan has very fond memories of her time at school. She developed a deep love and passion for music from a very young age, played piano from when she was only three years old, and went on to become Head of Choir at Frensham.

In the meantime, we look forward to catching up regularly with Susan at the annual Winifred West Legacy lunch and to have the opportunity to thank her for this extraordinary gift, which has been crafted with such love.

After leaving Frensham, Susan was awarded a Churchill Fellowship. Offered to a diverse range of people from all walks of life, a [ 39 ]

A LIFE WELL LIVED Custodian Geraldine Kenway 21 March 1941- 3 September 2022 Old Girl Geraldine Kenway (1958) once said:

Frensham gave me the gift of selfconfidence, a love of learning and a freedom of spirit, which set me off on a wonderful life of adventure and discovery. A Testamentary Bequest to Winifred West Schools Foundation is my ‘thank you’. One value strongly espoused by Winifred West was that ‘Young people should learn to see life not in terms of possessions, privileges and power, but as an adventure.’ Geraldine Kenway grabbed hold of that philosophy with both hands and lived a life full to the brim with adventure, as well as taking out into the world what is most needed in a Frensham girl—the spirit of willing and loving service.

‘Young people should learn to see life not in terms of possessions, privileges and power, but as an adventure.’

Geraldine led an extremely interesting life, much of which had its genesis in her formative years at Frensham. She always said that Frensham was “the best thing” that ever happened to her. Geraldine left Australia the year after having successfully completed her leaving certificate, bound for a life in Italy where she studied art with her friend, Denbigh Sale (1959). She also travelled to Greece, where she was captivated by the people, the culture and the landscape.

Winifred West

Geraldine returned to England, studied Greek, forsook art and studied photography, with the idea of combining it with her artistic talents. [ 40 ]

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

Winifred West also said, ‘Failure to try a new idea is much worse than trying the idea, and failing to make it a success.’ So, Geraldine returned to Greece, where she became the first female photojournalist in Athens.

After leaving Greece in the 1990s, Geraldine spent ten years living in England before returning to Australia for good. She lived in Elizabeth Bay, where she caught up with many of her Frensham school friends and joined The Royal Sydney Golf Club, playing a great deal of tennis—her new passion.

She covered topics as diverse as the military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974, the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, murders and nudist colonies, as well as stories further out in the rural areas of Greece.

In her later years Geraldine encountered some serious medical issues and sadly died on 3 September 2022 at 81 years of age. Always the straight talker and not keen on euphemisms, she stated that, in the event of her death she wanted it known that she had died, that she hadn’t just ‘passed away’.

During this period, Geraldine also spent some time back in Australia where she created a series of historic photographs of the construction of The Sydney Opera House.

Geraldine was fondly remembered at a memorial service in December last year at The Royal Sydney Golf Club, attended by a wide range of family and friends.

ONE BEQUEST 28 LIVES CHANGED FOREVER The Thomas Lawson Scholarship [ 42 ]

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

F

rensham Schools recently established The Thomas Lawson Scholarship, with funds made available from the bequest of past parent and grandparent, Selma Lawson.

for Foundation to be certain that these Scholarships and Educational Grants could be offered annually. A total of 28 girls were assisted by Foundation’s Bursary Fund from 2010 to 2020, some through Scholarships and some through Educational Grants.

Selma fully appreciated the benefits of a Frensham education—she was a great supporter of the aims of the School and its success in achieving them.

Then, in 2021, The Thomas Lawson Scholarship was formally established. This is a perpetual, means-tested Scholarship, for true All-Rounder students. It is for girls entering Year 7 at Frensham, with the first two students commencing in 2023.

In September 2001, Frensham Schools was notified of a bequest from Selma, to establish The Thomas Lawson Scholarship in honour of Selma’s husband. This Scholarship was to support girls who came to Frensham in Year 7. Each Scholarship was intended to cover all or part of the tuition and/or boarding fees.

As a result, we are able to guarantee students from rural Australia an opportunity to experience the exceptional advantages of a Frensham education. The recipients demonstrate a strong capacity for involvement, the pursuit of excellence, and the heartfelt willingness to contribute to the welfare of others.

Importantly, it was Selma’s wish that the relative value of this gift would be maintained, and that the income from the gift would be used to support these Scholarships. Accordingly, for several years no Scholarships were awarded, as Foundation worked to build up the corpus in the Bursary Fund that was underpinned by the Lawson bequest.

Parents (or guardians) of the recipient are also committed fully to the ideals of Frensham. We inform the families at the time of granting that the Scholarship is provided from funds bequeathed from the estate of Mrs Selma Lawson, in memory of her husband, Thomas Lawson.

From 2010 Foundation was able to begin offering rural and regional Scholarships and Educational Grants. By that time, the Lawson bequest had ensured that the Bursary Fund was sufficiently strong

The Thomas Lawson Scholarship will be offered every year going forward.

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

Outcome

This gift from such an early philanthropist was extraordinary—not simply because of its sheer magnitude, but also for the transformational power that the generosity of one family can make.

Frensham has a proud history, much of which has been enabled by the far-sighted generosity of others. An example of one such gift was that of Mary Perry, who was a close friend of Winifred West. In the early 1900s, Miss West made a living through private teaching, and was very critical of the education she saw for girls at the time saying, ‘It was stereotyped, conventional and unadventurous.’ Her strong ideas led many to ask why she didn’t start a school of her own. Miss West was unable to do so, as she simply did not have the money to undertake such a venture. Her friend Mary Perry turned to her and said, ‘My grandfather has just died and left me a thousand pounds—you can have that!’ This gift from such an early philanthropist was extraordinary—not simply because of its sheer magnitude, but also for the transformational power that the generosity of one family can make. In the same way, Selma Lawson’s bequest has transformed lives by giving students access to a Frensham education. Her bequest will continue to do so for many years to come, as Selma’s vision lives on through The Thomas Lawson Scholarship. [ 44 ]

PASSING ON THE BATON A leadership gift from Joan Montgomery AM OBE [ 45 ]

WINIFRED WEST SCHOOLS FOUNDATION

Students spoke of Joan’s ‘queen-like poise, style and elegance’ and her ability to ensure that each girl was encouraged to reach her full potential— much as did her mentor, Winifred West.

I

n 2022, Joan Montgomery visited Frensham and made a very special gift to Foundation—to thank Frensham for her start in the education sector. Her gift will pass on the baton and help grow leadership skills amongst the current staff at Frensham. Taking the lead came naturally to Joan during her years growing up at Presbyterian Ladies’ College (PLC) in Melbourne. Tragically, she lost her mother at the age of 17 and her father shortly afterwards. However, she was determined to pursue her education and graduated with a BA and Dip Ed from the University of Melbourne in 1948. Joan commenced teaching at Frensham the following year. She was hugely inspired by Winifred West and was encouraged to take on leadership opportunities at Frensham during those early years in her career.

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

Joan’s career after PLC has encompassed leadership at the highest levels in the secondary and tertiary sectors, and she currently resides in Melbourne, Victoria.

After leaving Frensham, Joan spent two periods teaching in England—‘exciting and stimulating years’. When she returned to Australia at the tender age of only 34, Joan was made Headmistress at Clyde School, followed by her appointment as Principal at PLC, a position she held for 30 years.

Joan’s gift will create leadership opportunities for current staff members at Frensham. Her gift will be specifically directed towards an initiative for staff professional learning, to assist members of the teaching staff to pursue leadership development opportunities as part of their career progression, particularly in the girls’ school context.

The impact of Joan’s leadership at these two schools was far-reaching. Staff spoke of her ability to attract great teachers and develop their initiatives. Students spoke of Joan’s ‘queen-like poise, style and elegance’ and her ability to ensure that each girl was encouraged to reach her full potential—much as did her mentor, Winifred West.

The staff to benefit from Joan’s gift will be selected in 2023 by the Head of School. Next year, we look forward to bringing you the story of the successful recipients, and the impact of Joan’s very special gift.

A BRAND NEW START Reigniting the Livestock Enterprise

[ 48 ]

IMPACT OF GIVING 2022

O

The Livestock Enterprise provides an excellent fundraising opportunity for parents, particularly farmers, because we are not asking for donations of money—only for grass to feed the stock.

ne of Foundation’s flagship fundraising programmes is The Livestock Enterprise.

The Livestock Enterprise is a flagship fundraising programme—creative, unique to our community, and it has raised over $450,00 since inception. These funds have assisted many rural girls to attend Frensham. However, the recent drought took its toll. With farmers struggling to feed their own livestock, there was no capacity to take on extra cattle or sheep. Accordingly, the Livestock Enterprise went on hiatus for several years.

in 2022, Lottie is currently in Year 11, and youngest daughter Clio is hoping to become a student at Frensham soon.

All that changed in 2021. We saw the breaking of the drought, as well as the appointment of the new Chair of the Livestock Enterprise, Hamish Firth.

When asked why Hamish chose Frensham for his daughters he said, ‘We knew a lot of families who had daughters at Frensham who were extremely happy there. It’s also very much a countryorientated school, being the largest boarding school for girls in Australia, so for us it was a really nice fit.’

Foundation is extremely grateful to the immediate past Chair, David Alker, who did an incredible job steering the ship during both good and bad times. David is continuing to Host livestock on his farm at Merriwa, while at the same time generously assisting Hamish as he eases himself into his new role.

Hamish, the sole Director of Ray White Rural Scone, is constantly dealing with farmers throughout Central NSW. He understands the complex challenges that farmers face on the land, and also appreciates their willingness to contribute in whatever way they can, to make a difference.

Hamish’s family has a long connection to Frensham. His mother, Roslyn Firth (Green, 1962) is an Old Girl, and he has three daughters—Harriette graduated [ 49 ]

It’s such a grassroots programme, providing a path for rural girls to come to Frensham for families who need that “extra bit” to be able to make it all work.

When asked to take on the Chair of the Livestock Enterprise, Hamish didn’t think twice. He said, ‘I always thought the Livestock Enterprise was such a great initiative for the School and I wanted to help. ‘This programme provides an excellent fundraising opportunity for parents, particularly farmers, because we are not asking for donations of money—only for grass to feed the stock. ‘It’s such a grassroots programme, providing a path for rural girls to come to Frensham for families who need that “extra bit” to be able to make it all work. If we can raise funds for more country kids to attend the School—fabulous!’ Hamish went on to say, ‘And for our urban families who might find themselves in a position to donate, these funds give us the ability to run more cattle or sheep on farms, ultimately leading to even greater returns. It’s a win-win situation for everyone.’ Pictured on page 48 and left: Cattle residing on the Alker Family property in Merriwa. Vale Peter Shorthouse It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Foundation Director, Peter Shorthouse, in November 2022. Peter was the father of Old Girl Emily Shorthouse (2021) and husband to Victoria. He gave several years of service to Frensham Schools through his time spent as one of our Foundation Directors, and particularly in his leadership of Foundation’s Investment Committee. The Frensham Giving Day in 2022 was a great success and Peter played a significant part in making that day happen.
