VANCOUVER By Kathy van Gogh

I

sat down with Lisa Wolfin in Yaletown over lunch to learn all about this thing called Art! Vancouver. I have met with Lisa several times and I know that her background includes working at Christian Dior in France. She never fails to impress me with her casual, yet elegant and always feminine look. I sat there in my usual attire as well…paint splattered shirt, no make-up and flip flops. I had made some small effort to pass for normal by draping a scarf around my neck to cover up the most obvious splotches. Lisa Wolfin is a woman with a mission. “I want Vancouver to be a cultural and artistic destination in the global arena,” says Wolfin. After 6 years of curating the artwork at Hollyburn Country Club, and as an artist herself, Lisa has first-hand knowledge of the level and variety of the local talent. “There is no reason we can’t compete on a world scale. Vancouver is already a premiere destination because of our natural beauty and cosmopolitan population. Let’s up our game to include art! “ With the inaugural launch of her brain-

child, ART! VANCOUVER, (www.ArtVancouver.net ) her mission is off to an amazing start. This will be the largest and most sophisticated art show Vancouver has ever seen, and I am thrilled to be participating. With the support of The Vancouver Art Gallery, Emily Carr Institute, van Gogh Furniture Paintology, Opus Art Supplies, DeSerres, and Golden Artist Colours, Wolfin has attracted a list of impressive artists from Europe, USA and Canada to show their work at the Vancouver Trade and Convention Centre this May 21st to the 24th. “We have already presold tickets to some serious buyers and galleries. I’m very excited about how it’s coming together,” says Wolfin. On a personal note, I am lucky enough to be among the list of speakers on the main stage at the show. As a master Decorative Artist trained in France, Italy, USA and Canada in the ancient art forms handed down by the masters, I am tickled pink (and Prussian blue, and Burnt Sienna, and Cadmium Red…) to reveal some closely guarded trade secrets that

G reg N a v a rti

have been handed down to me. I will be demonstrating some of the old school techniques I use in my work. I like to work with what most North Americans would consider to be unusual tools and products. After years of frustration and importing plasters and trowels from Italy, I decided to launch my own product line and train others. I now focus primarily on furniture painting. I’ve boiled down very complicated multiple-layer finishes into simple, achievable results by combining ancient techniques with modern products that I have made right here in BC! (www.vanGoghFurniturePaintology. com and www.StudiovanGogh.com) For me, there is also a bittersweet component to my participation in Art! Vancouver. My father, a descendant of Vincent van Gogh’s uncle, was a phenomenal, but undiscovered artist. Unfortunately, he died without ever selling a single piece of his work. I will be showing my father’s work right alongside my own work in my booth. It will be, I’m sure, my proudest moment…and I won’t be wearing my usual attire.

ake a look in your pantry, spice cabinet, and fridge. If you are like most people, you’ll find a stock of items that have accumulated over the years. Your eating habits have likely changed dur-ing that time, but we tend to hang on to the “old ways” for some reason. Does this sound familiar? It’s Tuesday evening, after a busy day, and you’re standing in your kitchen staring at the chicken you removed from the freezer last night. “How does this turn into a meal?” you wonder. Feeling less than creative, you opt for the usual – knowing it’s loaded with gluten, sugar or ingredients you can’t even pronounce. You say to yourself, “Next time, I’ll dig up one of those healthy recipes I want to try.” This scenario plays out in thousands of BC kitchens every week. When it comes down to it, we always revert to our familiar favourites – even if we’ve sworn to eat healthier. The key to eating healthier is stocking your kitchen with items you need to easily throw together a nutritious meal.

More importantly, it means ditching all of the items that are no longer part of your healthyeating plan. You might be surprised though, by the cost of a one-time replacement of all the items you’ve accumulated. I recently made muffins for a gluten-free client. She loved them and asked for the recipe. Imagine her shock when she discovered the ingredients would cost her almost $80. Of course, the ingredients would make many dozens of muffins but, for the first batch, it’s a hefty grocery bill. If money isn’t a concern, you can donate your pantry-raided items to a soup kitchen or shelter. They’ll gladly accept your generosity. Where do you start? To make the transition easier, I’ve assembled a switch list (previous page). When you run out of one of the items, replace it with a healthier alternative. Over time, you’ll assemble all of the ingredients you need to whip up healthy meals and snacks. With a little planning, this switch list works even better when you add ingredients from

those healthy recipes you’ve wanted to try. Soon you’ll develop new healthy cooking and eating habits that you won’t want to break. 10 Tips 1

FOR BEAUTIFUL WINTER SKIN

By Amanda Beisel

Wear moisturizer day and night Moisturizers are a skincare essential during the winter months due to the combination of cold weather and indoor heat. Moisturizers hold water in the skin, provide hydration and form a protective barrier on your skin. This skin barrier separates you from the outside environment, keeping you safe from external factors. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, your skin will start to feel dry and become flaky. Applying moisturizer day and night will help protect your skin all winter long. Recommended moisturizer: HydraHit Nourishing Moisturizer by Skin Addix

2

Wear makeup that is hydrating and healing

Liquid makeup is the ideal choice in the winter if your skin is prone to dryness. Liquid makeup will look smoother on the skin and provide extra hydration when formulated safely. Powders tend to accentuate fine lines and wrinkles in dry skin where liquid makeup reduces the signs of aging. There is one superior makeup available called Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation that is designed to hydrate and heal the skin. It is a great option for all skin types, including acne and rosacea, due to its anti-inflammatory and healing benefits. Recommended foundation: Oxygenetix Breathable Foundation

3

Find a serum rich in hyaluronic acid

4

Drink lots of water throughout the day

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most important ingredients in skincare. It is natural and is present in every tissue of the body and declines as we age. Hyaluronic acid provides hydration to the skin and also delivers nutrients into the cell and takes toxins out of the cell. It has immediate water-binding and water-attracting attributes that fill void spaces between connective collagen and elastin fibers found within the skin. This powerful ingredient is capable of holding 500 times its own weight in water, keeping the skin looking plump, well hydrated, and voluptuous. All skin types will benefit from using this ingredient. Look for it in a serum so you can get maximum penetration. Recommended serum: DailyFix Revival Serum by Skin Addix

Our bodies need water to function and it is no different for our skin. Water flushes toxins out of the vital organs and carries nutrients to the cells. A lack of water leads to dehydration and this is reflected in how your skin looks and your body feels. Mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you look and feel tired. Boosting your water with minerals is a great way to support the body and skin. Minerals are needed to activate the enzymes in our body. Unfortunately, many studies have shown that our food and water do not provide us with the necessary minerals, so supplementing with minerals is important. When the body is supplied with minerals, the necessary enzymatic functions can activate and the end result is healthy body and skin. Recommended water drops: Adya Clarity

5

Use nourishing oil for extra support

Select a high quality oil to apply to your skin each day. The truth is: not all oils are formulated the same. You want to find an oil that mimics the skin barrier containing the lipids your skin needs to be restored and repaired. The outermost layer of our skin consists of dead skin cells. These dead cells (corneocytes) are embedded in a lipid mixture consisting of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. These three types of lipids are so important to healthy, great looking skin and these are what you need to look for when purchasing a skin oil. Loss of these skin lipids results in increased water loss and increased penetration of harmful compounds. When your skin is deficient in these lipids, it can increase the signs of aging in the skin and break down the barrier causing skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and serious dehydration. Recommended oil: AfterGlow Replenishing Oil by Skin Addix

6 7 8 9 10

Choose a gentle aloe-based cleanser

During the winter months, the skin is more sensitive due to the climate change. The colder months are when we need to be more gentle and supportive of our skin barrier. Using an aloe-based cleanser will support and preserve the skin barrier. Avoid high foaming cleansers that have low quality surfactants (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate). These cleansers will make it very difficult for the skin to re-balance the pH and, over time, will become aggressed and the skin barrier defense system will break down. Recommended cleanser: Get Clean Cleanser by Skin Addix

Boost your smoothie with a raw superfood blend

Consuming nutrient-dense super foods will help reduce inflammation in the body that leads to accelerated aging. Inflammatory compounds in the body are involved in the aging process and this is reflected in how healthy the skin looks and feels. Avoid superfood blends that contain barley grass and other cheap fillers because these ingredients lead to inflammation. Look for inflammation fighting ingredients like alfalfa, spirulina, and chlorella. Recommended superfood blend: Fountain of Youth By Beauty Blenz

Opt for an AHA/BHA based exfoliation and avoid scrubs

Acids and enzymes are a superior form of exfoliation to daily scrubs. Granular scrubs are limited in their ability to effectively exfoliate the skin, can be harsh due to their abrasive action and can spread the bacteria when used on acneic skin. Acids will effectively exfoliate the skin while also working to improve hydration, control oil, and regenerate the skin, depending on the acid used. If you are not exfoliating on a weekly basis, dead skin will build up on the surface of your skin, preventing your serums and products from penetrating and making them ineffective. Consult a skin practitioner to find out which acids are best suited to your skin needs. Recommended AHA exfoliator: Pick Me Up Triple Acid Exfoliating Gel by Skin Addix

Treat yourself to monthly medi-facials and/or peels

Medi-facials and peels are great ways to professionally exfoliate the skin and infuse it with a high dose of nutrients. Treating your skin to a medi-facial or a peel every 4-6 weeks will restore your skin health, keeping it healthy and rejuvenated. Look for a skin professional that will customize the treatment your specific skin needs..

Chat with Skincare Professional

Let’s face it, it is an overwhelming process trying to choose the right skincare products for your skin. The good news: there are trained professionals who can help you find the optimal products your skin needs. Book a complimentary skincare consultation to discuss your current skincare program and make the necessary changes.

Grey is the new

Black! By Curtis Hunter

W

hen it comes to grey hair, women have typically allowed themselves only two options: either cover the greys completely and pretend they don’t exist, or throw in the towel and take up knitting. Well, I am happy to report that there has never been a better time to embrace your silver strands and let your natural hair be your statement piece. Mainstream fashion has made silver hair one of the most coveted colours of the moment. More and more actresses like Jamie Lee Curtis and Meryl Streep are embracing their natural strands. Even fashionistas are vying to be greyhaired goddesses thanks in part to Lady Gaga, Kelly Osborne and countless other celebrities who have taken silver hair to the next level. Let’s take a minute and figure out what all the fuss is about. Grey hair is simply hair that has stopped producing the colour pigment called melanin. As a result of this de-pigmentation, the hair

goes through some noticeable changes. It can become dry, brittle, and dull, which is why taking some extra precautions with your hair care routine can go a long way in keeping that shine, bounce, and moisture. Make sure to incorporate some rich conditioners and softening oils into your regimen. Learning to embrace the changes in your hair starts with a plan. Have an open conversation with your stylist about the options you have available for your type of grey hair. Are you currently colouring your grey roots with permanent hair colour? Try opting for a demipermanent colour that provides more of a sheer, blended type of coverage. Strategically placed highlights and lowlights are a great option if you are trying to grow out your natural greys. Remember, there are many different shades of grey, including silver, platinum, and white. All of these shades can be made stunning and sexy with the right guidance from your stylist.

15

| fresh Vancouver Issue 28

Never underestimate the power of a great haircut! A great haircut is crucial to keep your silver hair at its best. It provides shape, structure and complements the colour. I recommend regular trims every 6 weeks and shine treatments to keep your hair bold, beautiful and full of life. Silver hair is confident, silver hair is bold, and, most importantly, silver hair is natural! Embrace your natural beauty and show it off!

ybele Negris is CEO and co-founder of webnames.ca, Canada’s original .ca registrar. Having immigrated from Hong Kong at a young age, she has always considered Vancouver home and has built a business here that brings her pride and immense satisfaction, not to mention several prestigious awards including: Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Canada’s Top Female Entrepreneurs, Vancouver’s Influential Women in Business, Business in Vancouver’s Top 40 Under 40, YWCA Women of Distinction Award, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and a finalist in Canada’s Top 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures, Since its beginning fourteen years ago, Webnames.ca spun-off from the University of British Columbia and became a registrar under the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). The company grew to 30 people in 4 months, generating $2.5 million in its first year of operations. They continue to generate

multi-million dollar revenues each year and grow consistently with an extensive client list that includes many of Canada’s popular brands, global Fortune 500 corporations, top trademark agents and government agencies.

Take us through your background, the start of Webnames.ca to where the company is today.

After graduation from UBC, I worked in various departments and started to build skills in finance and HR. I moved up quickly and was hired as the faculty relations manager in the president’s office. I was going to go back to do an MBA/LLB program when I was hired by a startup pharmaceuticals company. I saw the opportunity to learn a lot more by being thrown into the fire rather than going to school, so I

17

took it, and after working with the team to build the company to about 40 people and going through an IPO, I left and started my own consulting company. During that time, I met John Demco, and he and I, along with two other partners, started Webnames.ca. We worked to automate and commercialize the technology and transitioned the registry to the Canadian Internet Registry Authority (CIRA), which continues to manage over 2.3 million .ca domains today. John ran the registry as a volunteer for thirteen years as a public service and to preserve an online identity for Canadians. He has been recognized by a former Prime Minister as a pioneer of the Canadian internet, and it has been a real honour to work with him. I look back at the crazy hours when we first started Webnames, when we had people sleeping in sleeping bags in the office just trying to keep up with the demand for the .ca domain

name. We were hiring 1 to 2 people a week. I worked 7 days a week for over a year-and-a-half and probably had an average of 2 to 4 hours of sleep a night. I was also building a house at the time, and I was still trying to finish up some of my other contracts for my consulting company. It’s amazing to think how I got through all of it. We’ve been pretty busy integrating new domain extensions over the past year and have launched nearly 300 new ones. The pace feels like running a start-up again, except we already have systems, operations and people in place to get it all done efficiently – and we already know the dos and don’ts of running a successful business. It has been a lot of fun!

What drives you?

The need for constant improvement. I think most entrepreneurs feel a desire to make the world better in their own little way, to solve a problem that others can’t, and to do things better than they have been done before. We have three core values at Webnames.ca. They are to amaze every customer with exceptional service, to always be improving and to make a positive difference. The company is run on these core values and we hire people who can live by these every day. The moment someone comes in for an interview, and every day forward, they see these core values and we implement constant reminders of how we are living by these and how we can do better. We make our business decisions by determining how the intended result will fit in with these core values.

How do you define success?

As an entrepreneur and company owner, you want financial success. You want the people who work for you to benefit from that: to be able to grow their careers and to offer them more opportunities. You want to be able to reinvest in the company and to be able to do new and innovative things. It is important to ensure you have the best systems and infrastructure, to be able to work with the best technology and to be able to afford to hire and retain great people. It is also important to be able to give back to the community because you can’t give from empty

pockets. While money does equal success, it is ultimately about what you can do with it.

You’ve been active in a lot of charities and philanthropic work. Can you share some highlights from that?

I’ve been involved in a number of organizations involving small business, support of women, entrepreneurs and education. I feel giving back to the community is extremely important. We participated in the Canary Derby for early cancer detection and research and it was a wonderful experience. It was amazing for team-building because we had people from development, customer support, marketing, sales and finance all working together to build something. The race was fun (and a bit scary) as the soapbox cars are fueled by gravity! You roll down a hill super fast and hope for the best. Fres h Interview

Amanda

Beisel By Rachael Biggs

Tell us about SKN

SKN Clinic is Vancouver’s original natural skincare clinic. Our treatments combine advanced technology and skin nutrition with the wisdom of eastern medicine, specifically cosmetic acupuncture. We continuously research the latest in skin health and treatments to provide our clientele with the most effective and innovative treatments. We understand that it takes healthy skin to create great looking skin. We believe the two are unquestionably intertwined. Our approach consists of providing the skin with exactly what it needs including proper topical foods and non-invasive treatments for restoration. With millions of products and treatments to choose from, the world of skincare can be very confusing, but my team is here to help educate and navigate the process of achieving beautiful skin.

What makes you different from a spa or a doctor’s office?

My goal was to create a clinic that had a holistic, results-driven focus, meaning the treatments were non-invasive and the focus was on the entire face and not just targeted treatments. I noticed that when injectables entered the skincare industry, there was this shift and people had this expectation of immediate results. However, this resulted in the most critical part

of skincare (the overall health and longevity of the skin) being pushed to the back burner. Injectables can be a great option for many clients and work well in conjunction with the treatments we offer, but are not everything your skin needs. Clients should understand that quick fix treatments like injectables do not contribute to the health and longevity of the skin, and this is really where we come in. Our approach focuses on improving skin health and providing visible results including improved tone, texture, clarity, and serious skin nourishment. Without a proper skincare program, your skin is going to be malnourished, aging is going to be accelerated and skin conditions like acne can occur. We are well known for our SKN Signature Treatments and Silky and Smooth Packages. These treatments combine cosmetic acupuncture with our other popular skin treatments and laser services, allowing the clients to get both skin rejuvenation and body and mind relaxation. Plus $99 of these treatment combos is covered by extended benefits if you have acupuncture coverage.

Where did your interest in health and beauty originate?

It all started when I moved to Korea after university to teach English and I was introduced to a whole new approach to health and wellbeing. The Korean culture was very passionate

20

about skincare and alternative health. They had many food cures for treating sickness. The skincare options in Seoul are endless as well. My Korean friends opened my eyes to this fascinating field and I returned to Canada to study Chinese Medicine. After graduating, I made the decision to specialize in cosmetic acupuncture and skin health. This led to the creation of SKN Clinic and now Skin Addix Cosmeceuticals.

What is the most rewarding part of your work?

Without a doubt, working hands-on with the clients and helping them achieve their skin goals. I am very grateful for the wonderful clients we have at SKN Clinic. They make our job both fun and rewarding. I also feel very inspired when I am creating the Skin Addix Line. Any future plans or innovations in beauty and wellness you are excited to share? We are continuing to expand our exclusive skincare line called Skin Addix Cosmeceuticals. We launched a year-and-a-half ago and it has been very well received by our clients. In fact, they are demanding that we keep growing the line. Our goal is to have an entire line complete by 2015 and to have products that address the most common skin concerns including acne, aging, rosacea, and pigmentation.

New Year’s Resolutions THAT LAST A LIFETIME By Dr Kelvin Mah

W

hen I think of the New Year, I always think of a fresh start - not necessarily as a means to forget my past and hope to be better, but as a fresh way to re-evaluate my life and the positives I have surrounding me. And now that it’s 2015 (wow, that was fast!), it’s the perfect time to express gratitude for and pay attention to our health and wellness. It’s such an interesting concept, if you ask me, creating a New Year’s resolution, because it brings a matter of inward reflection to the forefront of our minds. Now we’ve all heard the typical New Year’s resolutions before: lose weight, exercise more, eat better, etc. Not to say these aren’t great goals; they are, but I’ve got a couple of ideas that will take your typical resolution and turn it on its head. How about this year, instead of focusing on unattainable or difficult goals, we turn our resolutions inward and focus on goals that will last a lifetime? This means that you’ll be focusing on yourself instead of your appearance. At my dental practice, Smile City Square, I always pay attention to the overall wellness of my patients because it’s not just the aesthetics of a smile that make a person, but the person underneath. I believe that focusing on overall wellness really helps my patients understand what’s important in life: maintaining health on the inside that carries over to the outside. By now, you must be thinking, “OK, Dr Mah, so what are your ideas for the New Year?” Well, they’re pretty simple and they come threefold. Focus on resolutions that can (1) help you better look after yourself, (2) treat yourself, and (3) be true to yourself. Summed up, I’d say my resolution ideas are ones that help you honour yourself and your wellness. Take a look at my ideas for a fresh start to 2105!

Resolutions that Help You Better Look After Yourself

Looking after ourselves is key to creating a healthier lifestyle. Simple tasks such as daily dental care make all the difference to our overall wellbeing. After all, good oral health coin-

cides with general health and wellness. I always recommend instructions for oral care at home to my patients. Proper oral hygiene is of the utmost importance when caring for your teeth. On a daily basis, you should be flossing, brushing, and rinsing. And don’t forget about visiting the dentist because regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to verify that you’ve been maintaining your health properly. Try to take the extra time to properly look after your oral health in 2015. I think you’ll be surprised by the effects that these small steps will have on your health. The differences will radiate from the inside and carry over to your outward appearance.

Resolutions that Help You Treat Yourself

It’s a New Year, why not try a resolution that’ll help benefit you and you alone? I think the best solutions are sometimes the ones that put us at the forefront. Just think about it, our appearance is highly linked to our confidence levels and sometimes we need a little boost that will improve our wellness levels. If you’ve been considering a smile makeover or a simple teethwhitening solution, come see me at Smile City Square. Life factors such as caffeine, medicine, tobacco and fruit acids can discolour your smile. Usually, the process of discolouration happens over time, and may be hard to discover until you realize that you don’t enjoy smiling anymore. The good news is that professional whitening can bring back the smile you loved, or even bring out a smile you never knew you could have. Professional whitening can take as little as one hour, and the results are noticeable immediately. And the same goes if you’re looking for a smile makeover. Come see me for a personalized consultation and we’ll focus on why you’re taking the steps to improve your smile, not just the what and the how. You’ll get a renewed sense of self and feel a great improvement in your overall wellbeing.

This resolution will be sure to make you the one being pampered this year: pampered with a new look, a renewed sense of self, and a special treat just for you.

Resolutions that Help You Be True Yourself

My last suggestion for a 2015 New Year’s resolution comes from a place of acceptance: be true to yourself. I often find, through my personalized consultations with patients, that outward appearances don’t match inward personalities. I’ve met so many people with a great sense of humour and wonderful, lively spirits who don’t put themselves out there because they are selfconscious of their teeth or the appearance of their smiles. They hold themselves back because they don’t find their appearance pleasing to others. This year, work on bringing the true you to light by making your smile match your personality. A beautiful smile can work wonders for your self-confidence and will stop you from hiding behind an unaesthetic look. Be true to your real self. If you ask me, 2015 is the year for honouring yourself, whether by taking better care of yourself, treating yourself, or being true to yourself. It’s time to take our resolutions into our own hands and follow through. Now, I know New Year’s resolutions can be difficult to follow for an entire year, as we’ve all seen too often. Come February or March, we’ve often abandoned or completely forgotten our resolutions and are back to living our lives the same as always. Well, the great thing about my suggestions for New Year’s resolutions is that you can always pick up where you left off and make a difference in your life. I’ve been so lucky to help many patients throughout my years as a dentist. I just hope that these little suggestions will also make a difference in your life and have you on your way to improved wellness and general health. Rather than focusing on quick fixes, it’s time to follow a New Year’s resolution all the way through. Happy 2015!

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS By Heather White

E

ver set a New Year’s resolution? How’d it go? If it didn’t go well, don’t feel bad. A recent Psychology study revealed that only 8% of people who set New Year’s resolutions are successful. That’s not an overly impressive stat. Goal achievement statistics aren’t much better. So what can we do to increase our chances of success? There are many factors, but let’s focus on the one you have the most control over: your mind and, more importantly, your thoughts. Tony Robbins is famous for saying that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions you ask yourself, every day. I’d expand on that to include every thought you have; be it a question, a statement, a judgment, a criticism, a curiosity, or an idea. The quality of the words that flash across the screen of your mind and, furthermore, the energy behind those words, are determining the quality of the life you’re experiencing every day. It’s a big horse pill to swallow, the one that reminds you of the responsibility you have in how much joy, fulfillment, happiness, love and peace or lack thereof you have in your life. But once you swallow it, you’re back in the driver’s seat. Not to sound cliché, but there is some definite power in the statement: “If it is to be,

it’s up to me!” especially when it comes to your thoughts. And there’s a quick check-in to measure the quality of your thoughts. Just look at the quality of the results in your life. If they’re anything less than life affirming, there’s definitely an opportunity for a vibration lift. If you’re not convinced, here are 3 more reasons why choosing positive thoughts will improve the quality of your life:

order to survive their next 100-mile run. But those are truly few and far between. Everyone else I talk to is looking for ways to feel better. Healthier. Happier. More fulfilled. More at ease. More confident. More joyful. More enthusiastic. When you purposefully, consciously look for ways to think more positively, every cell in your body responds and you feel good!

1. No one makes it alone.

The world is changing and it’s changing fast. There are more highly educated people in India and China than there are people in North America. Chew on that for a minute. From GMO’s and food allergies to downturns and layoffs, stressful situations and circumstances are continuing to pop up in our lives and that’s going to continue and likely increase. When we choose to ask powerful, positive questions, when we choose to see things from a positive perspective, we have a much greater capacity for creative ideas to come forward and provide solutions for us and our lives.

But, let’s keep in mind how painful it can be to hang around people who see the glass as half empty. It’s draining. It’s uncomfortable and it’s frustrating. Some people are brave enough to call us on it, but most just stop inviting us, picking up our calls, and meeting us for coffee. We need one another to reach our goals and dreams, to have connection and relationship, to feel supported and loved, but stinking thinking is a fast way to get left out in the cold.

2. You feel good.

I haven’t met anyone on the Planet yet who wants to feel worse tomorrow than they do today. Except maybe ultra marathoners who are pushing their pain thresholds to new levels in FRESH VANCOUVER ISSUE 11 2626|| fresh Vancouver Issue 28

3. You’re more creative.

ASK THE EXPERT:

KARLENE KARST Q: I am a 35-year-old female and I have been wanting to incorporate an omega-3 supplement into my diet for overall health. However, I’m concerned that the increased fat might make me gain weight. Is this true?

A: The low-fat diet craze of the 1990s had many of us, women in par-

ticular, absolutely fearful of fat. The theory was that fat was the nutrition evil (and carbs were king) linked to obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer, and if we removed all fat from our diet, not only would we lose weight, but we would also have better overall health. This theory couldn’t be any further from the truth. Instead of fat making us fat, research has proven that good fats such as the polyunsaturated omega-3s actually help shrink our waistline, burn body fat, improve insulin resistance (precursor to diabetes), decrease our risk of heart disease, improve our brain and, as an added bonus, give us shiny gorgeous hair, glowing skin and strong nails (beat that carbs!). Omega-3s are superstar nutrients that are considered to be essential – meaning that our body needs them, but can’t make them. Therefore we need to get them from our diet. If our diet doesn’t contain them (which is the case in the majority of Canadian’s diets), then we need to supplement with an omega-3. Researchers have confirmed multiple ways in which fish omega-3s help with weight loss: • Stimulate the secretion of leptin – a hormone that decreases appetite and promotes the burning of fat.

• Burn dietary fat by helping the body move fats into the cell for energy and fuel. • Encourage the body to store carbohydrates in the form of glycogen, rather than hard-to-lose body fat. • Reduce inflammation, which is known to promote belly fat and weight loss. • Enhance blood sugar control by increasing the insulin-producing cells’ sensitivity to sugar. • Improve the fluidity of the cell membrane, which helps the body transport sugar from the blood to the cells. • Exhibit anti-obesity effects. Balancing omega-3s in your diet between the plant sources such as dark green leafy vegetables, chia, flax, hemp and other nuts like walnuts and almonds with those from fatty fish such as sardines, anchovies, mackerel and salmon will help meet the daily requirements your body has for these important fats. However, sometimes the diet isn’t enough, and in the case of the omega-3s, the more you eat, the better they work. Therefore, I am an advocate of a daily omega-3 fish supplement to provide the minimum 1,000 mg EPA and DHA (omega-3s found in fish).

ASK THE EXPERT:

JANICE McDONALD Q: How can I eat to promote collagen and healthy skin? A: We all want healthier looking skin. It is important to eat fresh foods

to achieve this. Organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouts and other healthy plant foods are important part of our diet, as well as spirulina and blue-green algae. Dark green vegetables such as spinach, cabbage, and kale contain an antioxidant called lutein that will boost hydration and elasticity and are also rich in vitamin C. Regular consumption helps strengthen the body’s ability to manufacture collagen and utilize protein. Beans such as mung, kidney, and adzuki help with hyaluronic acid. Red fruits and vegetables contain lycopenes, which are also important in increasing collagen production. Beta-carotene, found in sweet potatoes and yellow and orange

33

foods, helps with protection from UV damage. Citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and strawberries are all natural sources of vitamin C. Omega oils such as seabuckthorn oils, salmon, tuna, nuts, brazil nuts, cashews, and almonds are important for collagen support. Amino acids such as carnosine are found in turkey and lysine is found in chicken. These prevent glycation or cross linking of the skin. Zinc and L-carnosine, found in lean meats and red meats, and zinc, found in raw pumpkins seeds, aids wound healing. Other superfoods that should not be forgotten: dark chocolate, whole hemp seeds, goji berries and rooibos teas. Janice McDonald, Head Aesthetician at The Coliseum Medispa, North Shore, Vancouver.

HOW TO GET A

NATURAL LOOK By Brianna Errelat

O

ne thing I get asked all the time when doing makeup is how to create a natural makeup look that doesn’t mean an hour in front of the mirror. Believe it or not, the ‘natural’ makeup looks can take just as long as the glam looks! I have broken it down to 9 easy steps. I believe that if the complexion looks flawless and radiant, then the eyes, cheeks, and lips don’t need much more than a few tweaks and you can have a gorgeous natural face that will make people wonder what you’re doing at home. Spend the majority of your time on your skin. 1. Prep and prime your skin. Honestly, if you don’t, then all of your hard work will be gone before lunch! Prep skin with a lightweight moisturizer and follow with a primer best suited to your skin type. One example is Hourglass. 2. Even out your complexion with a foundation that matches your skin tone. My favorites are Giorgio Armani Designer Lift or Tient touche eclat YSL. Both leave a glow to the skin and are buildable. 3. Apply a light dusting of translucent powder to set the base! Setting the foundation is so important; it evens out the texture of your skin and prevents shine. I love using a light radiant foundation and then a translucent powder over top because you can still see the glow in your skin after applying.

harmonious makeup that looks perfect no matter how long you spent getting ready! Blondes: earth tones, rose, neutral pinks Brunette: pink, copper , bronze and champagnes Green/hazel: purples, warm browns, taupes, gold, khaki. If you use all three, eyes, cheeks lips you cannot fail because they are harmonious colors and complement each other. This is called a monochromatic makeup, and is the easiest way to create a natural look. Products that do all 3 are.. YSL Baby Doll Kiss and Blush- 3in1 for eyes cheeks and lips Tip: when using on eyes, make sure you use an eye base and dust with your setting powder after applying. STILA Convertible Color Tip: I use my finger to apply all 3, and then dust with setting powder and a touch of gloss on my lips Super fast! You don’t need a lot as this is super-pigmented. If you apply too much on the cheeks, use your beauty blender and tap the fat side over the cheek a few times to soften. Then follow with powder.

4. Touche Eclat has been around for years and there is a reason that this product is sold every 10 seconds around the world: it’s amazing! It is light reflection and concealer in one click. Apply under your eyes to get rid of pesky dark circles, on the bridge of your nose for a natural highlight (tip.. you don’t need to contour to get the look of a slimmer nose) and on your brow bone for a natural highlight to make your eyes pop.

7. Curl your lashes! Shu Uemura lash curler is a cult classic in a makeup artist’s treasure chest. It creates a perfect ‘round’ curl due to its silicone pad (vs rubber drugstore brands which give you an unnatural square edge).

5. Brows! Groom them! It’s true, brows frame your face. Anyone who has sat for me knows I’m brow-obsessed. If you already have full brows, then use a tinted brow gel (Anastasia brow gel) to tame the hair and keep them in place with a hint of color. If you’re lacking in the hair department, then use a brow pencil to fill in the areas that are sparse. My universal brow pencil that I use on everyone is Shu Uemura Hard formula Brow pencil in Seal Brown. This pencil reacts with the natural oils on your brow to give a soft natural finish that is super easy to use because it’s not super pigmented, which means it’s buildable and great for beginners.

9. Mascara!

6. Neutrals and Monochromatic Colours The trick: if you use the same tone for your eyes, cheeks and lips, you will create a

8. Apply a nude eyeliner on your water line to look more awake! Stilia Kajal Liner in Topaz
