EDITOR’S NOTE Slow journalism is a term I keep throwing around when I get in these impromptu debates about why newspapers and magazines are still relevant. (you’d be surprised just how often I find myself in these situations) And ‘slow journalism’ isn’t a dig at print - it’s not meant to indicate some level of antiquity - it’s just a form of journalism that our society isn’t typically familiar with. We’re inundated with the rapidity of social media, new posts and information flooding our screens the second it happens to leave older news to die only minutes after. We live from headline to headline. News stories cover issues for 2 minutes and within a few short paragraphs online before moving on to the next explosive topic. Things that were hotbutton topics last summer are barely remaining in our peripheral, if at all - yet those issues are still prevalent and ongoing. Our attention spans are trying to keep up with all the new conversations vying for our attention that we lose track of the old ones that meant so much to us a few short months ago. Slow journalism is taking the time to analyze, reflect, and debate an issue as thoroughly as possible. It’s researching the new information that pops up over time and looking back at the impacts a controversy may have had on a community - some things we understand better because we can see how it changed parts of our society for better or worse. Or sometimes, it’s simply about keeping the conversation going. Conversations about the Central Valley are often limited to outbursts of crime, extreme

injustices, drought, and the occasional political issue. Sometimes we come back to a topic, but the coverage is a snapshot of an update, and then it’s on to the next story. Which, is no jab at the local news industry, their job centers around delivering information the second it occurs - with the frequency events happen, it would be difficult for them to stay attached to old topics while covering new ones. The Flyer aims to take on otherwise shortlived headlines and give them some breathing room on our pages. We don’t want to forget anything that poses challenges for our community, and we want to give readers as much context as possible to help them make an informed decision should they choose to get involved. And all controversial issues aside, slow journalism also allows us to continue celebrating and revisiting all the things that make the Central Valley more awesome than people give us credit for. However, we need your help to be as successful in this as possible. We here at the Flyer do what we can to stay on top of things in the Valley, but we’re not a major corporation or even a moderately sized business with numerous staff. We’re a small business, like less than three writers, small and everyone wears a few hats in responsibility. Tell us what’s important to you, and your community or what’s worth celebrating. Or, just let us know if we’ve got our finger on the right pulse - we always appreciate the feedback. The Flyer isn’t only about Fresno or what we want - it’s about all of us.

Q&A w/ Founder James Pickens Jr

Ropesmart, one of our principle sponsors and suppliers of the dummies the kids will be competing on.

Can you share what types of ways the foundation has partnered with local communities? (what programs have you supported and what role did the foundation play, specifically [financially or otherwise])

What is the Open contest? How does that work, can anyone enter?

JP - My w i f e Gina and I started our foundation with the idea that we wanted to draw attention to the underserved youth in the LA area and we wanted to do more than just write a check, so with my passion for the western lifestyle and the platform my celebrity has afforded me we thought holding a charity team roping event where we could capitalize on the relationships I’ve cultivated with the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association) and the encouragement of people of like passion we’ve been able to raise over $100,000.00 for specific non profit programs over a 9 year period. Who are some current community partners for the foundation and where? (specific organizations or programs or individuals the foundation is working to help support) JP - The JPJ foundation has contributed (Financially) to Camp Giddy Up, a free weekend western lifestyle camp for inner city at risk youth. An amazing after school program for 13 to 18 year olds (in most cases) from single parent households called Hands for Hope, it provides a safe place for kids to come after school where they can do homework, engage with other kids with caring adults. And we support the Clovis Rodeo Foundation. How will the Kids Dummy roping contest be judged? (what are the judges looking for - who are the judges?) JP - It will be judged on how successfully a contestant can cleanly rope a roping dummy from varying distances without missing. The judges will be representatives from

JP - The Open contest is for the “ Professional” team ropers, those cowboys and cowgirls who make their living roping. It’s highly competitive and attracts the best ropers in the industry. So it’s not for everyone. Are you aware of the plans the Clovis Rodeo Foundation has on how they’ll use the proceeds, specifically, from the event? JP - We know that they’ve partnered with community programs within the Clovis, Fresno and surrounding areas for several years with an emphasis on children. How/When did James Pickens Jr develop a love for roping? What sparked his interest to even try it? JP - When I moved to LA to pursue my film and TV career I was fortunate enough to meet some wranglers and stuntmen who roped, I’d done some team penning but I like the thought and rush of team roping so I bought a roping horse and started taking lessons from these guys and it’s been a great way to wind down from the pressures of our business What is it about roping that he enjoys so much? JP - The fact that it’s a team event, the way the horses work and the competition. Why hold the event in Clovis? JP - A gentleman who was a participant in one of our early events had a relationship with the people at Clovis and thought our roping would be a good fit up there, with there history, the quality of the participants and the time of year. And it’s been a great move for us. Thanks everyone at Clovis!

9. Cowboys considered “Cookie,” or the camp cook, the most important person in camp. Sometimes called “biscuit shooters,” “belly cheaters,” and “bean masters,” camp cooks fed the cowboys three hot meals a day, no matter what. One of the cook’s jobs was to note the North Star each night and turn the tongue of the chuckwagon toward it. This way, the drive would know which way to head out the next morning. 10. The Stetson cowboy hat was not a popular choice for many early frontiersmen of the Old West. The image of cowboys always wearing ten-gallon hats was basically a movie gimmick. In fact, the most popular and practical cowboy headwear choices were the bowler and the derby because they were less likely to fly off when you were riding horses at speed. Also, it would’ve been pretty unsafe to wear a massive, white hat when you were really in the middle of a gun-battle, seeing as it would’ve made a perfect massive, white target for your enemies.

56 Tavern, the new and improved home of 559 Beer in Clovis. The brainchild of the Williams’ family strategic business plan, the tavern is a departure from the old tastingroom with a full menu of flame grilled selections, a central coast wine selection including specialty drinks to go alongside their local craft beer varieties, live music, and a wideopen dance floor where you’ll be able to twirl your sweetheart – if he/she will let you, of course. Located in Old Town Clovis, in fact just across the street from their former tasting room, 356 Tavern was the next step in the line of evolution for 559 Beer. “The original business plan from 2012 outlined a multiyear progression that would enable organic growth at a reasonable pace based on the local market. Now entering our 7th year we have established the 559 Beer brand with distribution into big-box retailers and supermarkets, the timing allowed for opening our full-scale restaurant/ pub,”shares owner, Cheryl Gomes Williams. Strolling in on a Friday night, the Tavern was all a tizzy with a line out the door and down the front steps – a byproduct from sharing the establishment with an ice cream parlor, so don’t be surprised when you see a row of teens and kids trying to (seemingly) get into the pub. But this isn’t to say that the parlor was solely responsible for the turnout, the entire pub was buzzing with patrons all its own. The entrance opens immediately to the bar area - Where the bartender kept the lines moving - and the room funneled into a long hallway where saloon doors swung in and out as people moved from the real show stopper of the Tavern – the live music/dance area. Three large rooms with hardwood floors arched into one another, and each had expansive, hand-built solid wood farmhouse dining tables with enough seating to keep standing at a minimum. And set up in the center room was a live, ready-to-rock, local band. It appears questionable, at first, that the tables were all in such proximity to the band where one table was all of four feet away from the ‘front of the stage.’ However, because the adjacent rooms are lateral to the performance area, the sound actually spills outward,

absorbed by the large decorative drapes and walls to dampen the noise – the engineering of the room allows for a surprising balance of sound that doesn’t dominate the space. Believe it or not, patrons could still hold conversations with each other through the music. Whether by design or pure luck, the Williams family chose a great venue to host live music - a feature they previously provided in their 700 sq ft tasting room but on a much smaller scale. With the available space in the Tavern they can accommodate a full 5 or 6 piece band, but leave the half stacks at home guys and gals, you won’t need them here. One of the unique qualities of 356 Tavern is that when it comes to their open mic night or choosing a band to host, age isn’t an issue. “We love to enjoy all types of music and are open to showcasing all ages. Where else

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

can teenagers play a gig to allow others to see and hear them?” says Williams. Live music can typically be heard pouring out of the Tavern on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 pm – 10 pm. However, the attraction of live bands has made 356 Tavern a bit of hotspot and the popularity has resulted in the Williams family to open up some of their Thursdays evenings to music as well. Tuesdays are reserved for Line Dancing Lessons. They will teach you how to cut a rug. Beginners have their own class at 6:30 pm for an hour and the advanced dancers have their time with until 8:45 pm. All are welcome to attend; class sizes vary between 25 – 45 people every week. 356 Tavern isn’t just family owned; it’s family run. There was a Williams in every room of the house, behind the bar serving guests, in the kitchen helping the cooks, and in the dining area greeting guests, sharing jokes, and keeping things running smoothly. It’s not uncommon to see the family rolling up their sleeves and working right alongside their employees.

Under Your Nose KINGSBURG By Will Freeney | memo247365@gmail.com

Y

ou can call it serendipity or synchronicity or mystic confluence – or just “sometimes things come together.” Slim Pickens would almost certainly have preferred the latter description. So, with the rodeo season on the event horizon (of the non-physicist sort) and the Central Valley’s overlooked gems as my ore, it seems only natural to explore Slim Pickens’ life and hometown – Kingsburg. Kingsburg is a genuine, old school, main street kind of town, incorporated in 1908. Originally it was a small station on the Central Pacific Railway, known as Kings River Switch. It was subsequently known as Wheatville when the first post office opened in 1874. Unlike your average town of that time and place, though, it holds great pride and heritage in its origin as a Swedish-American village. Beyond these origins, there is its claim to fame as the birthplace of the son of a dairy farmer – named Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. From that humble beginning, Lou-

8

| APRIL 19 & 26, 2018

is Burton Lindley, Jr. eschewed dairy farming for the rodeo, much to his father’s chagrin. When young Louis went to register for a rodeo, he was – so the story goes – told there would be “slim pickin’s” for a fellow like him. To prevent his father’s discovery of his nascent career, Louis registered for the event as Slim Pickens. Slim Pickens’ first event was his first win - $400 worth – making his new handle both unique and ironic. Slim Pickens was part of the Hanford High School FFA and went on to have a career as a rodeo clown. In fact, comedy seemed to come to Slim Pickens at an almost cellular level. When he enlisted for the Army during World War II, his recruiter asked his profession, and he responded “rodeo” – which was misinterpreted as “radio,” landing him in a radio station in the Midwest for the duration of the war. When Pickens made the transition to film acting, he was a natural character actor for the plethora of Western films and TV

| FRESNO FLYER |

shows of the 1950s and 1960s. His time on the rodeo circuit had garnered him a Texas-Oklahoma drawl that belied his Central Valley roots, and his horse-riding skills meant he required no stunt double. Although Slim died an untimely death at age 64 due to brain cancer before being inducted into the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, his most widely known accomplishment is undoubtedly the role of Major T.J. “King” Kong in Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove” – a role which would have (also) been Peter Sellers’ were it not for Sellers’ foot injury on set which prevented him from maneuvering in the tight spaces of the cockpit set. As fate would have it, the role went to Pickens, and thereby arguably the most famous rodeo ride of all time. But enough about Slim Pickens, aka Louis Burton Lindley, Jr. He is just Kingsburg’s most famous native son. You can visit his haunts in Kingsburg, but along the way, you will find much to occupy your attention and charm your sensibilities. If your sensibilities run toward the grape and its fermented fineries, you will not be disappointed by the products of Kingsburg’s Ramos-Torres Winery. If you choose to visit them this weekend, you can also enjoy their function as an entertainment venue, when another Central Valley native son – Patrick Contreras – amazes with his electrified violin virtuosity on Sunday afternoon. They will also be hosting weekly Friday night entertainment from 6 pm – 9 pm through April and May. Downtown Kingsburg manifests its Swedish influence in many colorful ways – from the Valkommen banners on light posts everywhere to the only slightly less ubiquitous use of chalet-style framing on the fascia of buildings. But to savor all of the Swedish flavors of Kingsburg, visit Svensk Butik – the Swedish shopping source on the same block as city hall and the Chamber of Commerce. Their inventory covers the gamut of all things Swedish, and the proprietor, June Hess, dresses in traditional Swedish costume and is a valuable resource for the history of Kingsburg. As she tells it, Kingsburg was “the roughest place between San Francisco and Los Angeles” in its heyday before the immigration of Swedes. Then a virtual diaspora of Swedes relocated from Michigan in the 1880s, in search of a milder climate with a longer growing season. Kingsburg went from being “seven bars and one

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | B&S | CLASSIFIEDS |

church” to “seven churches and one bar,” in the span of a few years. It also went from being just another consequence of the Gold Rush to being a Swedish Village. The city incorporated in 1908, and its homogeneous Swedish cohort grew to be 94 percent of the population within a 3-mile radius in 1921. Now, almost one hundred years later, diversity has ensued, but Kingsburg’s Swedish origins are very much a part of its pride and tradition. Another part of Kingsburg’s pride is two brothers, who as native sons, represent its athletic significance in the world. Rafer Johnson, Olympic decathlete, and his brother, Jimmy Johnson, NFL Hall of Fame inductee and former San Francisco 49er for 16 years, are both from Kingsburg and have contributed to it significantly – including the naming of the high school after Rafer. N o trip to Kingsburg would be complete without a trip to jail. No, Kingsburg law is not that harsh. The Kingsburg jail is, however, that charming. Its two holding cells were still in use until the 1970s, but now they function as a fully furnished historical museum. You don’t have to spend the night there, though. There are several worthy hostelries to accommodate an overnight or weekend stay in Kingsburg and nearby Selma. Kingsburg is also on the Blossom Trail and its natural consequence, the Fruit Trail. However long your stay in Kingsburg, enjoy it with gusto. As Slim would say, “Yeehaw!”

Musket salute for early fresno county sheriff

A

memorial to honor former Sheriff of Fresno County, J.D. Collins, will be held at his grave and marker located at Academy Cemetery off of Highway 168 east of Clovis on Saturday, April 28. Sheriff Collins was born James Darwin Collins on October 30, 1843, in Rhea County, Tennessee. At 18 years old, he enlisted to fight in the Civil War on May 14, 1862. Initially starting in Neal’s Tennessee 16th Battalion, the company eventually became Company C of the 16th Tennessee Battalion. After nearly a year of service with the 16th, Collins was captured near Jacksboro and taken to Camp Nelson, Kentucky. During his time as a Civil War prisoner, Collins was moved three times, once to Louisville, then again to Camp Chase, Ohio, and finally to Rock Island Prison, Illinois. On March 13, 1865, Collins was sent to Point Lookout as part of a prisoner exchange. He took the Oath of Allegiance in Chattanooga, TN and discharged to Athens, TN. Collins soon married and decided to move to California, arriving in Fresno County in 1870. Collins founded ‘The Academy’, first secondary school in the Valley, located in the present-day Academy. In 1876 he was elected to the State Assembly serving one term. He ran for Fresno County Sheriff and was elected twice serving from 1899 to 1907. After leaving office, Collins farmed in the Lone Star and Dry Creek districts. He died in Fresno on September 29, 1918. The service at Academy Cemetery should only last an hour from 10 am to 11 am. It will include an Honor squad and Musket salute. The public is welcome to attend. For further information contact Tom Bolton at tomsts09@ att.net or 559-622-9394
