EDITOR’S NOTE Brace yourself; the holidays are coming. And now that the world has seemed to think we’re past the pandemic, that means even more holiday gatherings with family. To make matters even more complicated, the last few years have brought with it political unrest and fiery hot-button topics that are near impossible to avoid - both local and national. I’m not going to spend this note telling you to be the bigger person, have some patience, and change the topic when discussions turn to controversial issues - threatening ideological conflict. Instead, I want to encourage you to have those difficult conversations, to stand your ground when you stand on the side that protects the vulnerable. And to stare the ridiculous assumption that “cancel culture is destroying everything” right in the face without backing down. It’s inevitable, socio-political topics are going to drop right in the mix of your perfectly planned turkey dinner - and typically when everyone is three glasses of wine deep. Now, I’m not saying that you should go in full throttle and plant down on your proverbial soapbox with a molotov cocktail. Instead, I’m suggesting that you call out bullshit when you hear it and do your best to have open, honest discussions about challenging topics without shying away from it altogether. A healthy, intellectual sparring match is good for the soul. Plus, a lot of us could use the practice. Often, we’re not faced with different viewpoints from our own until we add a bunch

of family and friends into the mix. Many of us choose the company we keep regularly, and we naturally gravitate to people who believe the same things we do or view the world through a similar lens. These holiday gatherings give us a chance to hear perspectives from people we care about. We’re more likely to listen to another viewpoint because we love and respect the person sharing it. These holiday gatherings are a chance to connect. It’s also a unique opportunity to bridge gaps in our understanding of what’s happening in the world - one of the most significant reasons society has such ugly discourse is because we can’t effectively communicate with each other. Of course, if you can’t trust yourself not to stand on that soapbox with a bullhorn to preach your views, then, by all means, pour yourself another drink and keep changing the conversation. After all, your mental health comes first. However, if there is an opportunity to respectfully confront old-world views and help people understand that renaming a football team, high school, or community is about treating an entire culture with dignity - do that. (or whatever the topic is) Restorative justice is one of the very few ways we can build up and heal our more vulnerable populations, right wrongs, and generally make our society exponentially stronger on all fronts. But we can’t get there if we turn away from the hard work of talking (and truly listening) to each other.

An Idea Whose Time Has Come By Dave Fountinelle

S

quaw Valley (which, in recognition of the harm this term represents, will be referred to as “S Valley”) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Fresno County, about 30 miles east of Fresno and about 9 miles north of Orange Cove. Not to be confused with the Lake Tahoe ski resort and site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, S Valley is a small, rural community with terrible skiing and a population of around 3,200. It is also the subject of a growing movement by local Indigenous activists to change its name. “What if I told you there was one common word used by sexual predators of Native American women? What if I told you some individuals vehemently defend the term as a word of honor and respect? What if I told you an entire community was named after this word?” Those are the questions posed by Indigenous activist Roman Rain Tree on his change.org petition to change the name of S Valley. It is an issue he has been pushing the Fresno County Board of Supervisors to act on, without success, for over a year. Despite receiving over 18,500 signatures, the Board of Supervisors has so far refused to commit to any plan to rename the community. The Orange Cove City Council received a proposal back in January. However, it was delayed due partly to push back from some council members. County supervisor and representative of S Valley, Nathan Magsig, responded to the proposal saying, “I am not interested in having any cities trying to tell communities outside of their city limits what the names should be of those communities.” Magsig went on to say that the S Valley name will remain in place until the community members themselves decide they want it changed. As America continues to confront and address the negative impact of its colonial history, revisiting the racist and defamatory nature of many of our geographical names has become increasingly common. Public response to these changes has also typically been very supportive. However, for the residents of S Valley, public opinion has been, at best, mixed. In July, lifelong S Valley resident Gladys Dick McKinney told NPR, “As far as [S Valley] offending me, that name does not offend me. And I’m an Indian woman, a mother.”

Like Rain Tree, McKinney is also a member of the Dunlap Band of Mono Indians. And like many S Valley residents, she only learned of the effort to change the name when it was brought up for council vote in January. Also, like many S-Valley residents, McKinney doesn’t truly understand what is offensive about the “S-word.” Clouding the discussion is a debate about whether or not the “S-word” is truly an offensive term at all. While most controversial placeholder names have a clear and widely-supported offensive meaning, the “S-word” isn’t as clearly defined. The groups who oppose the term claim it is taken from the Mohawk term “ojiskwa,” which means “vagina.” It has historically been used as a derogatory term for Indigenous women. However, many historians - such as linguist Ives Goddard - attribute the word to a pidgin shortening of the Algonquin suffix “-skwa,” which is simply a feminine identifier. An Abenaki historical consultant, Dr. Marge Bruchac, wrote that words such as nidobaskwa, which means “female friend,” or manigebeskwa, which means “woman of the woods,” are examples of the use of this suffix. These experts contend that the “-skwa” suffix is just one of many Indigenous words and phrases to be broken up and co-opted into the inaccurate hodgepodge pidgin dialect of European colonizers. According to Dr. Bruchac, “squaw” means the totality of being female and does not translate to a woman’s female anatomy. In her article “Reclaiming the word ‘Squaw’ in the Name of the Ancestors,” Dr. Bruchac wrote, “I understand the concern of Indian women who feel insulted by this word, but I respectfully suggest that we reclaim our language rather than let it be taken over.” Dr. Bruchac’s words drew sharp criticism from the Indigenous community, including several death threats. Opponents argue that Indigenous people who defend this and other offensive terms are doing a massive disservice to their communities and the fight for Indigenous rights in general. “The word “sq**w” epitomizes the racism and sexism Native American women face,” Rain Tree states on his Change.org petition. Rain Tree has gained the support of the American Civil Liberties Union of | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

dave@fresnoflyer.com Northern California (NorCal ACLU). They have taken up his fight to change the name of S Valley, drafting a letter to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors to encourage Rain Tree’s proposed name change resolution. In the letter, NorCal ACLU detailed the long-standing, negative association of the “S-word,” both in its use towards Indigenous women and as a derogatory term for women generally. In addition, NorCal ACLU cited comprehensive studies that have shown a measurable negative psychological impact on surveyed Indigenous people and reinforced negative stereotypes among non-native Americans. The letter called on the Board of Supervisors to change the name of S Valley to one that honors and respects the Indigenous community. Rain Tree has gone on the record stating that he believes that the Indigenous residents of S Valley want a name change. However, because many tribes are currently applying for federal recognition, they’re afraid to speak out. He is currently working on an application with the US Board on Geographic Names to get the name changed, in addition to his change.org petition. Rain Tree and other critics of the “S-word” say that, whatever benign historical roots the term may have, it has come to mean something offensive, derogatory, and harmful to Indigenous women. Violence against native women is a serious issue that still receives very little national media coverage. According to an NCAI Policy Research Center study, California has the fifth-highest number of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in the country. More than 80% of Indigenous women have reported experiencing violence, and nearly 50% have reported being victims of sexual violence. Activists point to the “S-word” and other offensive and derogatory terms as contributing to a culture of complicity that continues to turn a blind eye to the abuse, exploitation, and murder of Indigenous women. This was more than enough reason for the more-famous Lake Tahoe ski resort that formerly shared the same name to change its name. In August, the Alpine Meadows resort announced it would immediately begin looking for a new name. Ron Cohen, President and Chief Operations Officer of S Valley Alpine Meadows, said of the decision, “While we love our local history

and the memories we all associate with this place ... we are confronted with the overwhelming evidence that the term ‘sq**w’ is considered offensive.” Rain Tree and other name change proponents point to that decision and wonder why Fresno County’s Board of Supervisors is hesitant to follow suit. In addition, Orange Cove Mayor, Victor Lopez, is adamant in his opposition to changing the name. “Citizens bring in whatever they want to bring in, and they put it on the agenda to be discussed,” Lopez explains, “I will not vote in favor of it. I can tell you right now; I guarantee you I will not support that.” Despite the apparent refusal of local officials and the County Board of Supervisors to take action on the name change, Rain Tree and his fellow activists remain adamant in their efforts. “The current name underscores the disparaging impact on the local community of which the name represents. The word “sq**w” perpetuates a sexualized, exploitative, and humiliating narrative that continues to focus the desires and disgust of early Euro-Americans on the bodies of Native American women,” Rain Tree’s petition states. Victor Hugo has been credited with saying, “There is nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” The Indigenous people of the Central Valley have been fighting for dignity and equality for generations. The Indigenous women of the Central Valley have literally been fighting for their lives. The time has come for the culture of complicity to end. Handcrafted chocolate from scratch, directly from cacao beans. Their single origin chocolate bar is multi-dimensional in fine flavors and the ingredients list is short - only 3 ingredients, as a matter of fact. With the weather cooling down, they will start offering hot chocolate in November. The drink is made from the same high-quality chocolate that they use to make their chocolate bars, so it’s a far cry from the typical sugary hot chocolate made from cocoa powder. For holidays season, they’ll also roll out the chocolate bonbons. These are colorful chocolate treats with ganache filling, perfect for holiday gifts. ear reader, as the holidays usher in this special time of the year, let us not forget those taken into emergency rooms and intensive care units. Unfortunately, Covid continues to persist and terrorize our communities. Yes, it’s still around - that horrible, relentless disease once in the forefront of everyone’s nightmares, haunting every major headline for the past couple of years. And, even though Covid has primarily been dismissed to the sidelines of our recent, fatigued social memory, it’s still very much causing destruction and disruption everywhere. For example, here in Fresno County, we have had a total of 2,131 Covid deaths. Last month at this time, we were at 1,964. That’s 167 people suddenly gone - people who would have otherwise been here to make their holiday plans just like you, with you. Last month, we had a running total of 128,450 positive cases. Now, that number is 136,901. Right now, there are over 300 people currently hospitalized in Fresno County because of Covid. It’s still very dreadfully real. And the country as a whole is not doing any better, either. In the past month, the U.S. has experienced 2,266,815 new Covid cases and has had 43,456 new deaths. That’s about a 2% mortality rate. These past 30 days have been bad. In total, we have lost over 746,000 dear Americans to this awful disease. And, sadly, the carnage is not over yet - the data clearly shows this, unfortunately. Yet, if you spend time anywhere in town, you’ll get the feeling that Covid is a thing of the past. More and more, you see less mask-wearing in public and overall less concern for the pandemic. The state of California still has mask rules in effect, however. According to California’s Covid Current Safety Measures webpage, “Masks are required for unvaccinated people and recommended for everyone in indoor public places.” These places include indoor retail stores and restaurants, theaters, and state and local government offices that work with the public. But, how do these places know if the mask-less people entering their doors are actually vaccinated? Well, they don’t. If you’re

not wearing a mask, these businesses and offices just presume you are vaccinated. Imagine if we took that approach with STDs! If your partner isn’t wearing a condom, that ‘must’ only mean that he’s AIDS-free, right? Not too smart. Thankfully, a Covid vaccination provides safe and robust protection against SARS-CoV-2. Still, breakthrough infections do happen (Covid infections in previously vaccinated people). And their occurrence is normal - since vaccinations are not 100% effective. Yet, they still provide excellent protection against severe Covid sickness and death. But, who is the driving force behind these breakthrough infections anyway? You guessed it - the unvaccinated and unmasked. They’re the ones spreading Covid to everyone - including the (unmasked) vaccinated. But, those who aren’t vaccinated right now, they’re like sitting ducks. The coronavirus has only gotten faster, stronger, and more efficient since it emerged some two years ago. And it’s hunting for openly available hosts to infect and wreak its havoc upon. And so, if you’re not protected by diligent and proper mask-wearing or by vaccination, you’re very vulnerable right now and should be concerned. You don’t want to be added to next month’s Covid statistics (but, if you’re not protected, you might be). A few weeks is a lifetime when Covid comes knocking at your door. This danger is why California still requires masks to be worn by everyone - vaccinated or unvaccinated - in indoor places like senior care facilities, correctional and detention centers, K-12 schools, homeless and emergency shelters, healthcare settings, and on public transit. Simply put, Californians can’t trust their fellow Californians to be vaccinated and Covid-free. So, protection must be worn in public places to ensure everyone’s safety. This precaution shouldn’t make you mad - even if you’re vaccinated. Instead, you should appreciate the extra protection. You don’t want to go through what Covid survivor Richard Soliz went through these past few months. After humbly returning to the Seattle hospital that fought for his life for 28 days, he recently made the news to thank the staff for saving him. | FRESNOFLYER.COM |

“Fighting for life over a vaccine I deeply regret not making the decision to get vaccinated...I could have easily died at any moment...I need to breathe, and I can’t breathe – [was] a very, very scary feeling,” he admitted. “There’s still a lot of people out there that feel the way I was feeling and just nonchalantly thinking, okay, I’ll take my chances,” Soliz insisted. “Well, you can take your chances, but you’re not guaranteed you’ll come out of it ... Please go get vaccinated because this virus is real,” he pleaded to anyone who would listen. “Real enough to take someone’s life or put you in the ICU...” Soliz recalled being admitted to the hospital and remembered the staff asking if he was vaccinated or not. He felt embarrassed to say no after recognizing how sick he was and how dangerous his condition quickly became. And, he poignantly realized that most people sick in the ICU with Covid were unvaccinated - just like him. He felt incredibly dumb to think that he could have avoided this entire Covid ordeal if he had only taken heed and gotten vaccinated. As you may or may not know, once you contract Covid and get sick, it’s too late for any vaccine to help your condition. It’s strictly a preventative measure, not a cure. The purpose of the vaccine is to prevent severe Covid illness and death. It does not necessarily prevent infection. Yet, it may allow your body to effectively fight off infection so that it does not develop into sickness or result in death. On the other hand, effective mask-wearing may prevent infection and spread since it physically obstructs the coronavirus from entering the body. Bottom line, dear reader: to protect your life, get vaccinated. To protect yourself and others from getting sick, wear your mask. Both are important. Both save lives. Vaccinated mask wearers are modern-day heroes. Be one today.

By Nancy Zanicchi-Bobb newbeginningconsulting11@gmail.com And now we gather to celebrate and remember with grace and gratitude the gift of this life. What will you be bring to the table this Thanksgiving? How will you celebrate? What are you grateful for? Some tips for gathering that you may consider: • • •

• •

• • •

Healthy boundaries should always be at the top of your list. Open the dinner with a blessing and what this year-end celebration means to you. Be cognizant of maintaining healthy standards whether you are vaccinated or not, be mindful of sanitary and hygienic surroundings. In addition to healthy boundaries, remember emotional intelligence, bring respect, compassion, kindness and gratitude wherever you are breaking bread for Thanksgiving. Keep social media to a minimum at the celebration. Turn off the phone or have everyone place their phone in a basket outside the dining room area. This will promote conversation and eye contact at the table. Share a special message, read something inspirational. Reach out and connect. Listen and receive. Discuss what resonates with those at the table, reflect together before, during, and after that delicious warm meal. Speak of changes you have witnessed, allow yourself to be open to learn something new at this gathering. Practice empathy, and follow your moral compass. Finally, close the evening celebration with a toast to everyone!

Those poor, persecuted christians By Jaguar Bennett | jaguarbennett@gmail.com

F

rom the moment the Tower District community expressed opposition to his takeover of the Tower Theatre, Adventure Church Pastor Anthony Flores has claimed persecution. That his church is being persecuted by people who hate Christians. Flores says that the people who oppose him are “anti-God.” (Flores frequently seems confused about the distinction between himself and the Almighty.) Flores claims that city officials who have cited Adventure Church for zoning violations or expressed concern over maintaining the theater’s historic character are also part of the persecution he suffers. Is any of this plausible? Could it be true that the city government and the residents of the Tower District, under the sway of Fresno’s immensely powerful atheist and gay lobbies, have joined forces to persecute a small, defenseless congregation - motivated purely by a ruthless hatred of Christianity? To cut through the deception here, let’s be clear on who has the power in this situation because it isn’t Tower District residents or even the city government. Adventure Church has the money to buy one of Fresno’s most prominent buildings for $3.9 million. Adventure Church has the lawyers to threaten city officials with a lawsuit that has frightened them from enforcing zoning laws. Until quite recently, evangelical Christianity has been one of the most powerful political forces in America. More to the point, evangelical Christianity is still an

6

| NOVEMBER 2021

overwhelmingly powerful force in local Fresno politics. Fresno does not seem a likely place to find rabidly anti-Christian fanatics. On the contrary, this is one of the most religious cities in California. By one count, there are 374 churches in Fresno or one church for every 1,500 residents. Mayor Jerry Dyer, like so many Valley politicians, is ostentatious in his religiosity. The Fresno City Council went to a great deal of trouble to put the words “In God We Trust” on the council chamber walls. The primary opposition to Adventure Church’s takeover of the Tower Theatre are residents of the Tower District. But they don’t have Adventure’s money or lawyers. Hundreds of Towerites have protested outside the Tower Theatre: Christians, members of other faiths and secular people; Black, Latino, Asian and white people; gay and straight; transgender and cisgender; and people throughout the political spectrum from left to right. If a group this diverse is united on this issue, the common factor isn’t hatred of Christianity; it’s disapproval of Adventure Church’s actions — which is not at all the same thing. The “persecution” that Flores complains about is simply him not getting his way. No one opposed to the sale of the Tower Theatre is trying to take away anyone’s right to worship. We’re not trying to close

| FRESNO FLYER |

down Adventure Church’s existing location. We wouldn’t try to stop Adventure Church from operating in any properly zoned building. Instead, Flores claims that the Tower District community is “persecuting” him because we dare voice our objections - when he breaks zoning laws, when he threatens the long-term viability of Tower businesses and property values, and when he tries to impose an anti-gay church in our queer-affirming neighborhood. This is a very peculiar kind of persecution. The guy with all the power in the situation claims he’s being persecuted because people won’t just lie down and let him do whatever he wants. Of course, everyone wants to pretend they’re the underdog these days. But, let’s be frank, playing the victim is often a highly effective way to get what you want in our society. A fair society should strive to protect the most vulnerable — but it becomes a problem when powerful people want to preserve their power by demanding the same protections as genuinely vulnerable people. Billionaires claim they’re victimized by income taxes. White people claim they’re victimized by reverse racism. Gun owners claim they’re victimized by gun control laws that threaten their right to intimidate and kill others. During the COVID-19 crisis,

| FEATURED | DINING | CALENDAR | MUSIC | CLASSIFIEDS |

| FRESNOFLYER.COM |

people claimed they were victimized if they were not given free license to infect others with a deadly disease. The Christian Right is particularly fond of claiming that they are persecuted by a rapidly secularizing society. Less than 20 years ago, the Christian Right was considered to have enough power to sway national elections. Today, the Christian Right claims that every advance in rights for LGBTQ+ people is discrimination against Christians. When the Christian Right screams about persecution, what they’re really complaining about is a decline of relative power. So, by their logic, when conservative Christians cannot force others to comply — when they are obliged to consider the rights of citizens who belong to other religions, are nonreligious, or gay — it’s persecution. Consequently, any act by elected officials to protect the rights of anyone other than Christians is also persecution by the logic of the Christian Right. Thus, in every legal or political contest in which conservative Christians want to prevail over anyone else, they must win; otherwise, it’s persecution. In the words of Ohio GOP Senate candidate Josh Mandel, “There’s no such thing as separation of church and state. We should be instilling faith everywhere in society.” So when a well-funded, well-lawyered, politically connected church screams “persecution,” understand it for what it is — a childish scream of frustration at not having power.

sliced, cooked until crisp and drained 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 1/2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 1/2 tablespoons water 1 cup pecans, rough chopped Preheat oven to 375 F. In pot over medium heat, melt butter. Add flour and cook 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low then slowly add milk gradually, ensuring it is incorporated before adding more. Turn heat to medium-high and cook until thickened, stirring continuously. Remove from heat and set aside. In bowl, add drained potatoes, sauce, bacon, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Season with salt and pepper, to taste; mix well. In greased 8-by-11-inch baking dish, line potatoes on sides in desired pattern. Stuff extra bacon between potatoes from remains left in bowl. Pour extra sauce over potatoes. Bake 60 minutes. In small pot over medium-high heat, add brown sugar and water. Cook to melt sugar and allow to bubble, about 5 minutes.

Add pecans; stir 2 minutes. Lay on parchment-lined baking sheet and allow to cool. Once cool, chop into pieces. Remove potatoes from oven and sprinkle pecans over top. Serve Up a Seasonal Treat No seasonal gathering is complete without dessert, and quality baking during the holidays results in fresh favorites like Apple Pie. Allspice, nutmeg and cinnamon add spice to this festive favorite while brown sugar adds a hint of caramel sweetness with a nutty, moist, subtle molasses flavor that’s ideal for use in desserts of all kinds. The trusted performance of an option like Domino sugar helps make this a recipe you can turn to when it’s time to savor the season. Turn apple mixture into lined pie plate. Top with remaining pastry. Trim and flute edges with fork. Slit top crust to allow steam to escape. Bake 35-40 minutes, or until crust is golden. Serve warm or at room temperature. Cover and refrigerate leftovers. Add Color and Flavor to the Holiday Table When a holiday celebration calls for a truly memorable meal, it’s a perfect opportunity to serve a dish that just might become a family favorite. Combining a seasonal staple like cranberries with naturally flavorful lamb could be your ticket to a newfound tradition. These festive Cranberry Maple Glazed Grass-Fed Lamb Chops can brighten up your holiday table with an irresistible pop of red and deliciously pure New Zealand grassfed lamb.
