REPITITION/INTERUPTION WORKSHOP

Visual harmony Rhythym Interruption Emphgasis Repition of elements Consistency Habit and routine Anomaly To relate this theme to “the body i wanted to abstract parts of the body so to almost create a pattern. taking close up photos and retaeting them . although i like the detail of the photos singularly i think the do not work as effectively in a sequence as the room numbers which have a some what more graphic element.

The Repitition workshop was really valuable towards my understanding of design elements. I realised repitition can be considered in many forms, opening my eyes to just how we percieve repitition and familiarity in design. whether it be repeating an obvious pattern or just a theme. i was particularly intrigued by this idea of a theme. above i have tried to emulate this photographing the room numbers at LCC.

KNOWING YOUR TYPE WORKSHOP

Getting to know your type .. we were asked to study a serifed letter by drwaing it large scale as a curately as possible. The letter on the left the outline is my drawing and the actual letter, as you can see dosen’t quitw match, is placed underneath. this workshop was very valuable in noticing the fine details of type, individual letters can be altered just slightly to create a wholr new style and feel to a piece of work.

So this got me thinking about hand drawn type and the effect it gives a piece of work. i bagan experimenting by tracing over type and pieceing letters and symbols together to make different images and effects. then i experimented with placing this hand drawn text with computer generated text. It got me thinking about the effect hand drwn type can have on a piece of design, allowing imperfections.

JUXTA / POSERS WORKSHOP Collage is being used more and more today in design and illustration. piecing together something to make something else..i really like this idea of overlaying imagery and seeing what the outcome is. although i was dealt with a bad set of magazine cutouts there is always something to be made!

Here i was experimenting with photos, inspired by Diado Moriyama’s polariod peice, i wanted to piece together a number of images to make, not a succinct image, but one that represented a multitude of faces. although i feel these experiments were not so successful and didnt leave me with much to think about.

MICRO/MACRO WORKSHOP

This worksop mainly got me thinking about layout and how size and unlitamely hierarchy can is an essential element to the deign. although i was not completely satisfied with the outcome of this workshop, i grasped the basic principle to apply to my own work. if you want something to be a focus make it bigger! or you could even make it smaller and just have lots of space around it. It is all about where the eye is drawn to on a page...

A simple experiment.. following on from my repitition workshop experimentation i just wanted to point out the elememts that could be applied to my own project. because i am thinkg towards body language and gestures, when considering the hand how could scale be benificial towards the concept of my project?

FINAL IDEAS

With the completion of most of the workshops, i began to conceprualise my project, putting together all the design element that had been taught over the past weeks into my project ‘the body’. Looking at my initial ideas, what really stuck with me was body language, and the relationship between the mind and the body. Everyone makes gestures and movements that emulate certain feelings or emotions, not matter what part of the world you are from. With this idea i coined the title ‘the universal language’. Although i needed to narrow down the field as body language is a very broad topic. I have always found the hands the most expressive part of the body excluding the face so this was to be my foundation.

The hands- when we want to envoke expression whether it be enthusiiasm or anger many will use their hands. So having thought of this i began by researching hand gestures around the world which i also found to be a vast and extensive field of research. This to needded to be narrowed down!

TYPE DEVELOPEMENT I specifically altered each letter to create a bold, simplistic typeface. I also experimented with angles and shapes...

Looking at type i experimented on illustrator. I wanted the type to emulate and set the theme for my outcome. Coming up with some key words that represnted the theme i was after really helped in the design of the title, BOLD, PLAYFUL, SIMPLE, EYECATCHING...

FURTHER EXPERIMENTATION EXPERIMENTING WITH HAND DRAWN TYPE

Looking back at the ‘getting to know your type’ workshop i really wanted to experiment with hand drawn type. Due to the playful nature of my piece i wanted to experiment with a sort of child-like style...

i like the effect of the erratic hand drawn element to the piece but i feel that with the amount of information that needs to be represented it poses the risk of looking messy. i also experimented with drawing naive style illustrations of hands but i feel a more graphic outcome would be more succinct and aesthetically pleasing.

DEVELOPEMENT Some kind of chart or way of collating repetitive information as a result. Looking back at the repitition/interruption workshop i began to think of categorizing a theme. Although i dount think photography is the right format for the sort of theme and feel i want the final outcome to convey.

Representing hand gestures- the obvious direction was to take photos of hands doing different gestures which is what i did. The preliminary documentation of my concept towards a final ourcome. I want this to be an informative poster, postcards or maybe a book format.

Taking the photos of the hands i began to vector hands. tracing and anchoring round each contour to create a simple sort of style that i could use on a poster or chart. I quite like the outcome but would like to experiment generating it further as i feel the images lack the energy i want for the work.

DEVELOPEMENT experiments with colour... and line... i like the impact that these have as apposed to the other illustrations but i feel the clarity and definition pose a problem.

DEFINE HANDS... once i hand hand traced on photoshop every hand i wanted to experiment and develope it further. i wanted the final outcome to be simple and have imact so i felt it needed to be simplified further. although this is a good starting point i dont think it is quite visually appealing, rather looking like something you might get off clip art!

The next stage to simplfying my illustrations, i wanted more white space. so instead of a grey foundation i reduced the image to an outline. Though i prefer this image it stil lacks the impact and simplicity that i am trying to achieve.

Finally i reduced the image to a simple line drawing, which although clarity is an issue still, i like that it almost looks like it could have been drawn by hand without actually having done so.

When considering the layout , i looked at either a booklet, poster, postcards or a small book. from my developement i felt a fold out poster best served my final outcome. so that you can fold it out and view all the gestures as a whole but it is still something you can just carry away with you.

I also experiemented with hand placement, looking at size and colour.

‘Your mother is a whore’ Saudi Arabia Caribbean

FINAL LAYOUT Notes.. need to adjust the ‘text’ so it fits within the folds of the booklet. adjust the scale of the hands, some are bigger then others. Allign the text. Revert the colour of the title

Out of all the outcomes i feel the simple line drawing works the best. Although i think possibly in black just to keep it really simple and effective.

EVALUATION In terms of printing, i had a few problems. Firstly i wanted thin white paper, so it would easly fold and hold its shape. The paper that i ended up using was much thicker cartridge paper. Although i ied the matt texture finish of the paper as apposed to the coated laserjet paper, when it came to folding it posed a problem. I also chose to print it A3 folded down rather than A2 because i felt the hand illustrations were more effective that size.

My final outcome i think is simple and affectively communicates my concept. Although i would have liked to develope it further in terms of colour and a more creative layout, but still keeping the simplicity. I felt through this prject time management was an issue for me, spending unnecessary amounst of time in the initial ideas stage rather then just launching into experimentation and letting the ideas develop naturally. Overall I used the design elements taught in the previous workshops which ere really helpful in the developement of this projectt. I set rules and guides using these elements when considering layout and composition to ensure the final outcome was visually succinct and let the eye flow through the information.
