The biggest dam of Westphalia reaches from Olpe to Attendorn and was dammed in 1965. The lake which is about 20 km long has a number of branches. Besides its central significance as a water reservoir for the Ruhr region, the dam is a popular destination for numerous vacationers and particularly for water sport enthusiasts.

Blue, clear water, shady forests in the middle of an attractive forested mountain landscape – the landscape of the Biggesee has a special natural beauty. Its recreation facilities turn it into a holiday paradise. Let’s go to the Biggesee!

A vast program of water sports is offered around the biggest dam of Westphalia: Sailors, Surfer, divers, anglers and swimmers here find excellent conditions.

„Listertalsperre“ The „Listertalsperre” was planned and built at the beginning of the century. The dam which was finished in 1912 seals the Lister valley against the „Biggetalsperre”. The „Listertalsperre” has a capacity of 22 mio. sqm and is today considered to be the forward reservoir basin of the Biggetalsperre. While the front part is exclusively used for the drinking water production, the rear part from Windebruch to Hunswinkel invites to swim, paddle, surf, sail and to go fishing. The leisure time offer is rounded by cycle tracks and hiking trails.

Olpe – experience pure nature Sniff fresh country air, hike through green forests and meadows, observe the rich fauna and flora – let yourself be captivated in an incomparable way by the nature. In the mid-altitude location (300-600 meters above sea level) vacation days offer a special attraction for hikers and bikers because of the beauty of the nature. Whether walking in a relaxed or rapid manner or on horseback – leave your everyday life behind you and enjoy the nature in your own personal way. You will continually find beautiful visibilities and fascinating panoramas. Extended hikes on a total of 225 km well-marked trails and an especially created circular route – the DVV-circular route Olpe/Biggesee – with a total length of 165 km, which has to be completed in 8 stages, are a must for each active and nature-conscious visitor. The visitor can choose which stage he intends to tackle on which day. The starting- and arrival points are either directly in Olpe or can easily be reached by car respectively public transport. Trail of the German unity The trail of the German unity is definitely an experience for everyone – whether you are hiker or biker. Hardly any other long-distance hiking trail offers so many things to the hiker like this trail across the republic. Hike from Bilstein to Olpe and then onwards to Waldbröl or travel by bicyle from Winterberg to Olpe and then onwards to Bad Godesberg. Good accommodations and meals, and meetings with nice people at nice places let the tour become an unforgettable experience. The lively change of the straightaway forest path into a root-covered path, from the plain to the sudorific inclination demand some practice from the hiker.

Since 2008 Attendorn is part of the “Sauerland Höhenflug” one of the most beautiful natural-park hiking paths of Germany. Views that go into the distance for miles, hiking hours passing in a flash on the mountain crests – on 254 varied kilometers the path offers like no other a magnificent view and a close experience of natural life from the most beautiful perspective – from high above. The natural park „Ebbegebirge” offers demanding mountain ranges, beautiful view points and –towers, lakes which are harmoniously embedded in the landscape and of course a lot of nature. The diversified low mountain landscape is wooded up to 2/3. The numerous dams characterize the picture of the natural park. The region challenges everybody – whether in winter or summer, along the water or deep in the forests.

Repetaler hiking fun The “Repetal” which is characterized by the typical half-timbered houses of the Sauerland, is only located a few minutes by car from Attendorn and the “Biggetalsperre” and is embedded in a wonderful landscape. The open-air minigolf course at the upper lake is an attraction with a high recreational value. HISTORY The Biggesee is located in the “Kölnisch Sauerland”, the former duchy Westphalia (1180). The name “Sauerland” means southern country (1266 Suderland). The definition includes besides the “Kölnisch Sauerland” also the “Märkische Sauerland” (Grafschaft Mark). The archbishop of Cologne pursued territorial interests with the raising to town status of Attendorn in the year 1222 and Olpe in the year 1311; he pursued the enforcement of the state authority of Cologne at the crossing of important trade’s routes, Roman Road (Römerweg) (Bonn-Paderborn) and Iron Route (Eisenstraße) Frankfurt-Siegen-Dortmund. MUSEUMS Tradition, custom, art- and cultural history are very important in our country. A variety of museums present things that bear witness to the past, like the Südsauerland – Museum, the Bieketurm or the Fire Brigade Museum in Attendorn. Also the castle “Burg Schnellenberg”, the biggest castle building of South Westphalia is worth to be visited outside and according to prior agreement also inside.

INLINE-SKATING

The variety of the region can be discovered on 8 rolls. Beginners and advancers equally find excellent skate-conditions on the well-developed paths around the Biggesee. Meeting point for inline-skating fans is the skating area with a size of 800 m² behind the station in Olpe or the skating area near the round-gym with pyramide-fun-box, curb and rail in Attendorn. DRIVING SAFETY FISHING

Discover in the bays and branches a quiet fishing area and enjoy the silence. The Biggesee offers a fishing stream which is longer than 30 km - there is something for everybody whether you are angling from boat or from the bank. All have the possibility to catch “the treasure of the Biggesee”, a capital lake trout.

Test the limits of a vehicle without risk and overcome in future all critical driving situations. In the “Road Safety Training Centre Olpe” you can master a slalom course; you can practice to stop, to swerve to avoid suddenly appearing water obstacles or practice to regain control of a skidding car. We simulate snow and ice on watered sliding surfaces. All year long, under supervision of qualified trainers, the training is possible for young people and for those who are still young at heart. Ebbekammloipe: Ski-runs, cross-country skiing or ski touring have become the most beautiful winter pleasure for many people. How about a ski-run on the gentle slope (400-500 m long) in the skiing area Fahlenscheid? Here the fun in the snow is supported and the attractive snowboard-funpark let the snow fans take-off. Let’s go down towards the valley on a tube – snow tubing, the new winter fun in Fahlenscheid. If the landscape isn’t yet naturally snow-covered, snow-making facilities provide for good conditions at the corresponding temperatures. Floodlights make winter sports activities also possible in the evenings. The gliding on skis through the magical landscape trains not only the body from the fingertip to the tiptoe, but also procures mental- and physical relaxation.

Therefore visit also in winter our beautiful Südsauerland and find tranquility and relaxation. You can glide on skis leisurely or sporty through a wonderful winter landscape in an ideal cross-country skiing area. The skiing club Olpe has marked ski trails for you in Olpe-Fahlenscheid and has prepared cross-country skiing trails by means of machines in the cross-country skiingcenter of Olpe-Thieringhausen. Around the „Nordhelle” (about 19 km away from Attendorn) you find the well-prepared „Ebbekamm cross-country skiing trail” on the highest summit of the Sauerland.

Village festivals and board festivals, the big lake night festival, the “Kurkölner-Platz-Fest” and the juggler festival in Attendorn will provide for atmospheric variety. But also tradition and customs are actively cared for. Many shooting festivals prove this. The shooting of the eagle provides tension. Who will become king this year? On the festival of the festivals, guests and locals will get to know each other easily. But not only on festive days is the genuine lifestyle of the Sauerland expressed. In the middle of the nature Olpe, the city at the Biggesee, located between the mountain range of the natural park “Ebbegebirge” in the northwest and the ”Rothaargebirge” in the southeast, on a height between 300 m (Biggesee) and 589 m above sea level (Engelsberg near Neuenkleusheim). The name of the river and the city Olpe originally describes a “stream in a humid meadow ground”.

Medieval roots Probably in the 9th century on a Frankish Empire a first church dedicated to the Holy Martin was built. The developing village gained city rights in the year 1311 by the archbishop of Cologne Heinrich Graf von Vierneburg. The region experienced an economic boom from the 15th till the 18th century in which particularly the pan forges, also named “pan manufacturers” were important. In the year 1795 the old town was nearly completely destroyed by a great fire. Afterwards a new town was designed from the ground up, which still has served its face till today.

Camper van site at the leisure pool in Olpe GPS: 51°01’54’’N / 07°50’26’’E How to get here: A45 Sauerlandlinie till exit Olpe (number 18). Use the Federal road B54/55 in direction Olpe. After the bridge turn right and continue straight ahead till the first traffic light. Turn right behind the traffic light in the street “Seeweg”. Description: It can hardly be more beautiful: On the parking space on the banks, the view on the Bigge and the Biggesee, which extends behind the leisure pool, is secured by a lengthwise placement of maximal 12 camper vans. The leisure pool located only a stone throw away from the camper van sites contributes to the high attractiveness. Without a doubt holiday feelings also arise at the new sandy beach of the leisure pool at the Biggesee, which was in proper style furnished with roofed wicker beach chairs. Or what about a saltwater pool? Throughout the whole year you can relax here and gather new strength outside or in an effervescent “boiling pot” at a water temperature of 34°C. And there are also more possibilities: the water of the new hyper-thermal bath is 2°C warmer. Those, who want to forget the everyday stress, can do this only a few meters away from the camper vans in a wide sauna landscape. From here it is only a 5 minutes’ walk to the pedestrian zone of the district town Olpe. Spacious camper van site for 12 camper vans at the leisure pool Olpe, Seeweg. Parking lot reserved for camper vans at the border of the big parking area and located directly at the Biggesee. Electrical current (8 connections): 2 Euro for 10 hours/1,5 kWh. Information board. Maximal duration of stay: 3 days. Can be used all year round.

Who knows that during the festival in the old town the whole city center is transformed in a gigantic market with open-air programme? The city is located at the south west border of the “Ebbegebirge” in the Bigge valley. The mountain Rüenhardt is the highest hill with 636 m, while the city is situated in 253 m. The core city has about 13.000 inhabitants; together with 58 urban districts and living places Attendorn has a population size of about 25.000. The total area of the city zone has a size of 98 km².

Scenically emerged 368 million years ago out of a coral reef of the Devonian Sea, first settled in the Stone Age about 6000 years ago, construction of the first church during the reign of Charlemagne, for the first time mentioned in a document in 1072, city rights in 1222, member of the Hanseatic League and wealth till the 16th century; afterwards decline because of the pest and city fires; recovery caused by industrialization, construction of the railway and settlement of yellow metal foundries, disastrous destruction of the city because of bombs on the 28th March 1945, reconstruction and restoration of the Old Town in an historical ambiance.

The pleasant little city with 25.000 inhabitants, which received its city rights in 1222, is located at the south west border of the Ebbegebirge. The Bigge dam which was built in 1965 offers today a paradise for excursions for kids and grownups, for younger people and the young at heart. The „Federal Gold Village Niederhelden“ in the nice “Repetal” was awarded as the only village in NorthRhine Westfalia with “gold” in the Federal competition “Our village has a future” 2010. With more than 300 inhabitants located at the stream Repe, the appearance of the pretty village is characterized by centuries old half-timbered farm houses and further half-timbered buildings which continue this traditional construction method. This also applies for our youth hostel, which has an idyllic location above the lake. Families will feel good in our family rooms with own shower and WC and the children can play here undisturbed, unhindered and can romp. A little round table tennis with Mom – no problem! Showing Dad on the football ground who has the harder shot – let’s go! Our kitchen takes care that also Mom has holidays. And in the evenings when the kids are in bed, Mom and Dad can drink a nice glass of wine in front of the fireplace. Sports clubs find here an ideal accommodation for training camps, for trips at season start or for trips at the end of a season – as well for the youth- as for the adult department. The football ground and the large lawns offer the best possibilities for each type of sport and if the weather is bad, the children can perform enough activities in our “hall”. Choirs, orchestras and other music groups have always been regular guests in our house and appreciate the good acoustic and the numerous rehearsal rooms the house can offer. Clubs, associations, companies and other groups appreciate our house because of its great capacity. Thanks to our 250 beds and our atrium with space for 300 persons our house belongs to the few houses in Germany, which guarantee a common accommodation for large-scale events at attractive prices and this in a central location in Germany with excellent highway connections. Of course the classic hostellers like individual hikers, bikers or school classes are still warmly welcomed. And certainly we are at the disposal of the citizens of Olpe and the Sauerland concerning the organization of a family- or company party.

Rights and duties Rights and duties As always in business legal arrangements must be made and this also applies to booking a room. The booking of a room made by the guest and confirmed by the accommodation establishment concludes a contract between these two- the so-called guest contract (lodging agreement), which like all other contracts has to be complied by both parties. According to law and according to the established case-law it contains among other things the following rules: 1. The guest contract is concluded as soon as the room is booked and confirmed or – if a confirmation could not be made due to lack of time – is prepared at short-term. 2. The conclusion of the guest contract obligates both contract partners to fulfill the contract, independent of the duration of the contract. 3. The restaurant operator is obliged to pay compensation in case of non-providing the reserved room. 4. a) Guests not taking up the contractual performances, must pay the agreed upon or operating usual price less the expenditures saved by the restaurant operator. b) According to experience concerning the overnight stays the savings (holiday apartment) amount to 10 %, concerning overnight stay/ breakfast to 20 % of the overnight accommodation price, concerning half-board to 30 %, concerning full-board to 40 % of the overnight accommodation price. 5 a) The restaurant operator is obliged in good faith to assign the not taken room otherwise in order to avoid losses.

b) Unless the room is otherwise rented, the guest has to pay the amount calculated according to figure 4 for the duration of the contract. 6. Exclusive place of jurisdiction is the place of operation. Book your holidays without a risk! If you get ill shortly before the start of the journey or you can not travel because of other important reasons, you have to pay a cancellation fee because of the non-fulfillment of the rental agreement (see figure 4 – rights and duties out of the guest contract). In such cases there are travel cancellation insurances of the European Travel Insurance Plc, which bears the costs according to its conditions. We therefore recommend taking out a travel cancellation insurance. It is best to do this directly when booking your journey, however at the latest within one week after the receiving the booking confirmation.
