NERI
Company
Since 1962 Neri is the symbol of excellence in high-end outdoor furniture and lighting systems in Italy and worldwide. Over half of the Italian municipalities, and hundreds of international designers are already familiar with the hallmark of Neri’s brand, whose constant message has always been, and continues to be, stylistic innovation and technological research in keeping with environmental and human sustainability. Founded by Domenico Neri, artist, sculptor, and an attentive observer and interpreter of the aesthetic and functional demands of the cities, starting from their heart, the historic centers, Neri promotes a twofold proposal: continuity of its classical style in the Heritage collection, and evolution of its ideals of design and function in the Contemporary collection. Restoration activities, reproductions, customized urban integration projects, as well as partnerships with architects, lighting designers and energy managers, are part of the offering of a company with a presence in over 100 countries around the world, which since 50 years has been a symbol of ingenuity and passion.

Designers
Neri ‘s products are designed with constant and passionate care, introducing shapes and solutions that in many cases become reference models and styles for the whole market. The new frontiers of lighting applications, resulting from the spread of LED sources, nowadays require additional efforts in adapting the forms and confront designers with ever more difficult and challenging tasks.
An approach careful to collective needs, the attention to technological innovation, the use of new materials, the dialogue with the surrounding landscape, are the basis for an effective design that focuses on the spaces, the people and the best way to experience the social and environmental context. Neri designers have always been shaping dreams: often daring, always innovative dreams. Starting from the founder, Domenico Neri, whose love for art, urbanism and decoration have become the principle

Memories don’t always fade and fizzle out. Sometimes they can rekindle and revive lost identities. Classic shapes become beautiful, modern and functional again. This applies especially to the great collective heritage of urban décor, for which Neri has always shown not only a keen cultural interest, but also a practical commitment, especially in the restoration field. Our free, multi-disciplinary documentation, unfettered experimentation, enquiring, and passionate study of everything related of lighting, planning and urban furnishing, have seen Neri come to the fore in the world due to both shapes and contents. future technological developments are constantly applied to requests coming from outside the company and from the markets. This is done using tools that play a key role in the planning stage as well. Highly sophisticated equipment that is unique in different ways: such as one of the largest and fastest goniophotometers in use in Europe, which makes it possible to test the lighting performance of products and to check compliance to restrictive regional norms on light pollution. We also have a “Light room”, a test set that is the most attractive and technologically advanced at Neri – a type of wind tunnel through which light “blows”.

Laboratories
The main laboratories tests carried out on products: - UV proof - IP proof - IK proof - Salt spray test - Endurance test - Thermal test - Goniophotometer - Integrating sphere (Ulbricht sphere) - Lamp aging
This is trial by fire for each component, where monsoon rain, saline mist, mechanical impacts, electric stress and other intensive treatment reproduce decades of the effects of the working life of structures and equipment in a few hours. New products are also designed and developed in these places, within the company, where the utmost technical and scientific rigour is applied. The tests cover the lighting equipment, light sources and surface coatings. Safety tests, such as that to determine the degree of protection against water, solid bodies, or dust getting in, and performance tests that make it possible to measure the light flow and colorimetric characteristics of various sources, therefore provide essential added value to the Company.

Smart city
Energy saving and systems to control lighting, in relation to environmental policy, traffic regulation, and managing the territory. This is the Neri Smart System - technology developed for intelligent energy management systems. The use of sensors that are fully integrated with the design for Neri products makes it possible to regulate light levels to suit ambient conditions, traffic or time slots. Alarm messages can be sent to the emergency response teams, activated by sensors that detect incidents. HD video cameras can be integrated, and WI-FI services diffused. The entire system can be controlled and programmed through internet, using a simple web interface that is accessible everywhere. We have been working on making our cities more beautiful for 50 years, Now we want them to be more liveable and intelligent.

In 1950 just 26% of the world’s population lived in the city. Today this is more than half and in the next few years the percentage will reach 65%. Cities absorb about 70% of the world’s energy reserves. Public lighting accounts for 50% of this. Public lighting accounts for about 20% of the Public Administration’s budget. The use of LEDs combined with a Smart control system for lighting could result in up to 80% energy saving. In 2020 infrastructure investments for Smart Cities are set to reach USD 117 billion. Each year Italy spends Euro 1 billion on public lighting, with a per capita consumption that is double the European average.
NERI
Environment + LCA
All Neri’s industrial processes are carried out in a plant that meets the highest levels of sustainability. At Neri, safeguarding the environment is a real commitment: Targeted investments have been made to reorganise the production process in order to significantly limit emissions of solvents into the atmosphere. One example is the waterbased painting process that uses water soluble substances that are harmless to the ecosystem. In addition, Neri has introduced an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) analysis, which allows them to identify which phase in the product’s life cycle can be invested in, to reduce its environmental impact. Combining this approach with LED technology and Neri’s Smart System makes it possible to significantly reduce CO2 emissions as well.

Foundation + MIG
There can be no vision of future cities without experience of those of the past. Designing for Neri means plunging the tools of investigation and research into urban history and culture, exploring their passionate and continuous relationship with the world of architecture and urbanism. The Neri Foundation and its Italian Museum of Cast Iron (MIG), the latter created to document and preserve the largest collection ever assembled of cast iron products in the world today, play this role: they provide a unique documentary archive to the benefit of Neri research and development, on which to base their choices of tradition and innovation. An iconographic wealth (including 5000 postcards featuring street furniture, in the process of being digitized) and a collection of great impact (over 200 historical pieces from foundries, cities, government stores, found in every corner of Europe), representing an extraordinary historical and educational heritage, but also providing knowledge for restoration and reproduction activities, which can thus achieve otherwise inconceivable results. Permanent and periodic exhibitions, collaborative projects with cultural institutions and research centers, continuous exchanges with universities and corporate museums throughout the world, complement the current activities of the Neri Foundation.

The inside of the structure is fitted out with air extraction and condition equipment and all other systems have been installed in the wall cavities to allow better access for maintenance.

Overhead view of the installations in Piazza Bra
The latest challenge to urban furnishings in Italian piazzas: the reclamation of outdoor areas by public establishments. A cutting-edge intervention that has given all of Verona an original designer look, by Franco Zeffirelli. Thanks to this important joint project between the Superintendence for Fine Arts, Artistic Management, the City Council, and the manufacturers and businesses that financed the intervention, it has been possible to create these new elegant structures, in line with the palazzos overlooking Verona’s important Piazza Bra. These outside facilities have a cast iron structure with steel core. The tops are complete with waterproof, motor-driven awnings and perimeter lighting using traditional technologies and LEDs.

Forms with the addition of other forms, expanding architecture to add new functions with the same standards of beauty. In this project, a whole dining room has been added to the existing structure of a hotel. The structure has been placed on an existing perimeter wall and it has been built using highly decorative feature elements in cast iron. The roof is in copper and as well as insulation, the cavity contains the necessary systems and installations for air conditioning and lighting. At the same time, there is a polygonal porch over the entrance door with the same cast iron decorative features, but a glass roof has been added.

Bar kiosk and covered stage structure
View of the kiosk-bar in Parco Savelli, Cesena
The 19th-century structure of the park is full of history, yet still open to new interpretations, and new opportunities for social use, new artistic and architectural ideas. As the structures come to life, so do occasions for socialising. Front view of the kiosk-bar
The project included renewing the whole park and the structures it contains, consisting of an old cast iron kiosk that served as a bar, made by Neri, and a prefabricated metal stage used for different types of event. The surface are of the bar was increased using the cast iron parts of the previous structure, where possible. The octagonal roofing meets heat insulation requirements and is faced on the inside with matchboard. The second structure has the same circular shape as the kiosk and is supported by a masonry base and a curved metal beam. Columns have been positioned on the sides and back of the structure only; this is to provide the maximum opening at the front. The roofing is octagonal, like the kiosk bar; however, in this case, special techniques have been used to prevent echoes and acoustic resonance.
