The art of the lamp Why shouldn’t a lamp be as remarkable, richly made and historically resonant as any collectible in your home? A Schonbek crystal table lamp, whether classic or contemporary in styling, has a unique heritage. It takes its place among the masterworks of the Schonbek company, which dates back to 1870 in Bohemia. After centuries of exploring every possible form of the crystal chandelier, we became interested in reinventing the table lamp as well. Our medium would be fine crystal, as it was centuries ago when Adolph Schonbek created his first crystal chandelier.
Sometimes we ornament our lamps with STRASS® Swarovski® crystal jewels of ineffable brilliance. In other cases we achieve whimsical effects with colored crystal. We have also startled the design community with lamps formed of ancient rock crystal. Every shade is handmade, and an original design by Schonbek. Materials range from Dupioni silks to opulent velvets to subtly iridescent fabrics. Luxurious trims add a level of design detail rarely to be seen in a table lamp. A Schonbek lamp is useful as a matter of course, but above all an art object. It enjoys the full benefit of our ancestral knowledge of light and crystal. Many of our lamps exhibit urn-shaped bodies of exceptional Bohemian lead crystal. They appear to glow from within, an effect we call “bottled light.” Other designs are daring compositions of solid crystal chunks.
