We hate to say it, but those live, laugh, love posters did have a message worth paying attention to. Of course, that message is far funnier and easier to take with a little weed in your hands (or lungs). So, join us in not only celebrating a time in our country’s history where cannabis and culture were intertwined, but also, bring it back to the way life should always be.

If we could grow up in any era, we'd pick the ‘70s. The Vietnam War ended, John Travolta was dancing, shag rugs were all the rage, and Stevie Wonder was singing; what a time it must have been to be alive! We see glimpses from these good ol’ days in our fashion trends and the occasional song on the radio, but the ‘70s peace, love, and weed vibes aren't as easy to come by today as they were back then. While it's been over a year since our country's most tumultuous election in decades, America is still a country divided. As an ambitious cannabis company, we studied the ‘70s as an example of uniting in the midst of adversity, and took notes on how to bring us back together again. We discovered that cannabis and our lingo are two intertwined things that might just be the first step towards unity. How are they connected? The ‘70s counterculture movement brought its own lingo, an external symbol expressing commonality and support. Whether consciously or subconsciously, slang was a way of indicating that people were groovy, down, “in the know." So how do we transition from our current divisiveness to a rebirth of peace and love? We’ve got two ideas: first, that everyone consumes a bit more cannabis, and second, every cannabis consumer adopts the same groovy vocab to be in the know. There were a few ‘70s aphorisms that we couldn't get out of our heads. So much so we thought we'd help bring them to light with our friends at Buddies and their primo products. Buddies encapsulates the core elements of cannabis. As a west coast cannabis brand, Buddies understands the importance of craftsmanship and in turn has helped revolutionize the cannabis industry, shaping it into what it is today. Without further ado, here are our three favorite phrases we're bringing back to everyday use, and a Buddies product to kickstart the process.

6 | Chalice Farms Magazine

Someone who is out of it. A slang term that came about due to the enthusiasm following the first moon landing in 1969. Used in a sentence: One hit of Buddies Live Crumble will turn you into a total space cadet; you’ll be in the clouds for hours! Why does this work? Buddies Live Crumble is an enveloping experience. Crumble is known to be incredibly potent and tasty, and Buddies Live Crumble delivers. Made from cured, dried, whole flower, Buddies Live Crumble offers a unique expression of flavors that, accompanied by its robust terpene profiles and dry texture, makes for a great topper for your joint or bowl.

Used to tell someone to calm down. This expression came about in the late ‘70s with the advent of ADD and ADHD medications. Used in a sentence: Mary told Ryan to take more than just a chill pill, then offered to top his bowl with Buddies Drippers to help mellow his mind and relax into pure, sweet happiness. Why does this work? Buddies Drippers are ideal for adding a little more intensity to your cannabis experience. Add dabs into your bowl, joint, or whatever you please with this easy to use syringe. Drippers are available in Liquid Diamonds, Live Resin and Distillate + CDT.

Illustration: Lennox Rees

An expression similar to "that's great" or "sweet.” The origins of this expression are unknown; however, there are theories that it is connected to the expression "spill the beans." Or, maybe, beans were just cooler in the ‘70s? Used in a sentence: The best response to hearing that not only is Buddies All-in-One Vape rechargeable and has a 500mg tank but also comes in Liquid Diamonds, Live Resin, or Distillate + Cannabis Derived Terpenes (CDT) is cool beans. Why does this work? Because it’s always going to be cool to enjoy affordable, quality weed vapes.

@BUDDIESBRAND

Weed. Cannabis. Dank.

Our favorite plant goes by many names; there are over 1,000 slang terms to refer to the reefer. And while there are some wildly creative monikers floating around, there are a few names that cannabis enthusiasts, like us, think it's time to stop using. Here are two: Dope - A term that is no longer widely used, dope is a common term to refer to drugs en masse, like meth, opium, and heroin. Marijuana - Yup, even this one. The term became popular in the American lexicon in the 1930s to demonize the plant for anti-immigration propaganda purposes. Only by eliminating these negative and racist terms can we truly transform the cannabis industry. With an inclusive vocabulary for cannabis, we can welcome more people into the space and remove the unfair stigmatization. We owe it to brands like sofresh farms. On a journey to "promote health through the regenerative cultivation and delivery of exceptional quality cannabis," sofresh is Clean Green Certified and nobly strives to create a more socially and environmentally healthy alternative to prescription drugs. Harvesting cannabis on their small family farm in the northern Willamette Valley, sofresh has established and sustained industry-leading quality, social, and environmental standards. So do us a favor, let's end the stigma and stop using these two words and if you don't do it for us, do it for sofresh.

In Tune T

music & he Har m o n y b et w een canna b is

Cannabis has a long history in America, but the marriage of music and weed use began in the early 1900s in New Orleans. When jazz was emerging in the 1920s and ‘30s weed was the recreational drug of choice. Louis Armstrong, the father of jazz, said in his biography, “We always looked at pot as a sort of medicine, a cheap drunk and with much better thoughts than one that’s full of liquor.”

The use of cannabis had a profound effect on the music itself. Jazz, by nature, is very freeform. Musicians play together and encourage experimentation, riffing off of each other to create new sounds and beats. Cannabis not only has a positive effect on social interactions, it changes one's perception of time and encourages musical creativity. Dr. James Munch, a chemist and cannabis expert for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, said “If you are a musician, you are going to play the [music] the way it is printed on a sheet. But if you’re using marijuana, you are going to work in about twice as much music in between the first note and the second note. That’s what made jazz musicians.” (Larry Sloman, Reefer Madness) As jazz music made its way across the country, so did the popularity of cannabis as part of the underground, counterculture scene. In the ‘50s it became popular with beatniks like Allen Ginsburg, Neal Cassady, and Bob Dylan. Dylan’s bluesy, folksy sound has some of the same manifestations of the drug’s influence as jazz. His songs are often long and seemingly rambling, ignoring traditional constructs of timing and rhythm in favor of looser expression. According to tokelore, Bob Dylan was the first one to get the Beatles high. The story goes that Dylan, on his way to meet the Fab Four for the first time in the Delmonico Hotel in 1964, brought along some bud to share. He assumed they were smokers, as the song “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” contained the refrain “I get high… I get high…” He quickly found out that, while they were drinkers, 10 | Chalice Farms Magazine

they had never smoked, and the song lyrics actually said “I can’t hide… I can’t hide…” They decided to give it a shot, and the smoke session helped shape the future of the Beatles’ music. Their next album, Rubber Soul, which John Lennon called “the pot album,” audibly reflects their cannabis use, and is number five in Rolling Stone’s Greatest Stoner Albums. Around the same time, on the other side of the country, another sesh would change rock and roll forever. Phil Lesh recalls meeting Bob Weir for the first time and smoking together with him and Jerry Garcia, on weed that Weir had just bought from Neal Cassady. Lesh would go on to join Garcia and Weir, along with Ron “Pigpen” McKernan and Bill Kreutzmann, to form The Grateful Dead, arguably the most influential band in the convergence of music and cannabis. Not only is their music essentially synonymous with getting high, the Dead worked for decades to push awareness, acceptance, and legalization of our favorite plant. In 1967, the Haight-Ashbury apartment where the Dead and crew were living was the target of an undercover raid. Unbeknownst to the police, the raid was much less successful than they assumed. Someone had just bought a kilo of Acapulco Gold, which was sitting in a back room. Jerry Garcia was in the front room at a table, cleaning stems and seeds out of a much less desirable batch of American schwag. The cops seized the drugs they saw, but mistakenly assumed that was all the band had in the apartment. They were all thrilled to find the high quality bud safe, sound, and ready to smoke after they made bail. Drummer Bill Kreutzmann recalls the session that followed. “We laid on the second floor upstairs, just all on our backs, and had a big hookah in the middle of the floor, and we surrounded it and proceeded to smoke that whole kilo… You couldn’t tell the difference from the fog in San Francisco and the fog in our house.”

Soon after, the Dead held a press conference rebuking the police for the war on cannabis. Manager Danny Rifkin read from a manifesto: “The arrests were made under a law that classifies marijuana along with murder, rape, and armed robbery, as a felony. Yet almost anybody who has ever studied cannabis seriously and objectively has agreed that marijuana is the least harmful chemical used for pleasure and life enhancement.” They argued that although the use of cannabis was widespread among doctors, lawyers, and other members of “mainstream society,” the legal battle was being waged against hippies and the counterculture movement. A few weeks later they held the Marijuana Defense Benefit concert, raising funds to cover the legal fees of those arrested on low level drug charges. This was hardly the Dead’s sole contribution to cannabis culture. The band and their followers have spent decades traveling the world, and it’s hardly a secret that they brought weed along for the journey. The Dead reportedly commissioned a custom amplifier that had a secret compartment for transporting their stash. In each city, as baggies were bought and sold, strains were introduced to new areas, and people could get their hands on flower that was previously unavailable. Throughout the years, the connection between cannabis use and music has remained strong. Musical psychologist Daniel Levitin explains that because THC disrupts short-term memory, its use enables musicians to connect with their music fully in the moment, zeroing in on the individual notes. This also helps explain why listening to music is so enjoyable when you’re high. You’re suddenly hearing it the way many of the artists intended. Lindsey Buckingham once said, “If you’ve been working on something for a few hours and you smoke a joint, it’s like hearing it again for the first time.”

A FRIEND WITH WEED IS A FRIEND INDEED In today's world, there is a lot of division, and it seems to be getting worse rather than better. When’s the last time the news put you in a good mood? But there's one thing that can bring us together: cannabis. We prefer cannabis from companies who are making premium pot while also doing good. Viola is a purpose-driven company, focusing on community engagement and support. They work with local and national organizations committed to reinvesting into communities in which they operate. They focus on creating jobs, enacting policy reform, increasing diversity, education, community engagement, and social programs. It’s companies like Viola who are working to destigmatize the cannabis industry and narrow the gap between enthusiasts and skeptics. There are many lessons we can take from them and apply to our own lives.

EDUCATION Cannabis makes you more excited to learn and discover new things. In many ways, it allows you to free yourself from stress and anxiety and focus on the moment. Weed stimulates creativity, allowing you to be more open-minded to ideas, maybe even helping users connect with someone who has an entirely different life, beliefs, and opinions. Have someone in your life you don't quite understand? Grab a Viola preroll and talk about your differences. Available in 1g singles and 3.5g 10-packs, Viola prerolls use the whole flower for a convenient, full-flower experience.

EQUALITY A plant with a tumultuous history, cannabis is only recently earning respect and consideration as a safe alternative to alcohol and a viable medicine. Weed consumers know what it's like to be accepted in some places and demonized in others; therefore the cannabis community is incredibly welcoming of everyone. In fact, women and the LGBTQ+ community, specifically trans people of color, have been crucial in the foundation of the legal cannabis industry. They were the first California trailblazers who fought for legal access to medicinal cannabis. Grab some of Viola's flower, which uses a proprietary process to produce some of the best buds in the industry, and sit with people who accept you exactly as you are. Are they fellow tokers? We thought so.

RELATIONSHIPS Experience suggests that couples that blaze together stay together, and we agree with that theory. Cannabis decreases anxiety and stress, which are two things that often contribute to disagreements. Additionally, cannabis is known for enhancing intimacy and sensuality and increasing communication. How you and your partner choose to use cannabis to bring you together is up to you, but we suggest Viola Live Resin. You can't go wrong using the cryogenically frozen and extracted concentrate from the cannabis flower.

Belushi’s Farm is coming in hot this

year. To address the issues that resulted in a challenging growing season, Chris Karakosta, farm general manager, turned to a cannabis cultivation consultant for guidance. Now, the farm has been entirely overhauled with state-of-the-art greenhouses furnished with Fuse LED grow lights. Created as a gateway to healing, Belushi's Farm has been cultivating sungrown, all-natural, rigorously tested cannabis since its purchase in 2015. What started as a 48-plant crop farm, Jim's farm is now a thriving cannabis business,

especially since its overhaul. Belushi’s Farm 2.0 just celebrated its first harvest since the new updates, and Jim Belushi himself is now a believer in the latest technology. But of course, at the heart of Belushi's Farm, regardless of its updates, is still a mission that is much more meaningful than just selling the highest amount of cannabis: a desire to help others. Want to see how the sausage is made? (And by sausage, we mean cannabis.) Well, look no further than the Discovery Channel, because there you can watch "Growing Belushi." This season, we look

forward to tuning into Jim Belushi's evolution from boutique cultivator to multistate business operator, all while continuing Belushi's mission of spreading awareness of the healing power of cannabis.

JELLO

4•2•0

It’s no secret that jello was popular in the ‘70s. And no, we’re not suggesting that you get stoned and start mixing it with spaghetti-o’s and pouring it in your bundt pan. One of the classic jello concoctions that still tastes good today is Jell-O 1-2-3. This layered treat from Jell-O brand was introduced in 1969 and became an instant sensation. Although the mix was discontinued in the ‘90s, we’ve reimagined the food fad with a cannabis twist! SERVES: 2-3

Ingredients: 1 (3 ounce) box of any flavor instant Jell-O gelatin 1 ½ cups boiling water 2 Chalice Farms Fruit Chews (20mg THC) in any flavor 1 (8 ounce) container of frozen whipped topping

Directions: 1. In a bowl, combine boiling water, JELL-O, and Fruit Chews until dissolved. 2. Add ⅔ of the frozen whipped topping to the same bowl, one spoonful at a time, whisking until it is melted and fully incorporated. Put the remaining whipped topping in the refrigerator to thaw. 3. Pour into a clear glass or jar and refrigerate at least 3 hours, until set. 4. Top with remaining whipped topping and enjoy!

Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch

A market leader in organically grown cannabis. 54 Green Acres is Certified Kind, an incredibly big nod to the hard work they put into cultivating their cannabis. And what's the product they are known for? Honey. Coming in three distinct and potent flavors, Lemon Kush, Pineapple, and

Hindu Kush, 54honey pairs distillate and terpenes from the same strains, creating honey with overall effects similar to smoking flower. Additionally, they use honey made with their own bees and their own organic cannabis, making their products incredibly unique to the

Southern Oregon region. All this to say, you see why this brand is our sugar pie, honey bunch?

@54GREENACRES

Vinyl Jumpsuits hroughout history, fashion trends have come and gone. With changes in technology, politics, and values, fashion is often a visual representation of our cultural transformations. And one era that clearly stands out for its iconic trends is the ‘70s.

T

But, not everything iconic will stand the test of time. We’ve all seen photos and thought, “How did that trend come about? Who would be bold enough to make that fashion choice? They must have been really, really stoned.” They were obviously partaking in some high-quality bud. We decided to look into it with the help of our favorite strains from Bald Peak. As a producer of craft cannabis, Bald Peak delivers primo weed, the kind of top-quality crop that might justify wearing the ‘70s most outrageous outfits. 16 | Chalice Farms Magazine

Using the restroom must have been a pain in the you-know-what. Was looking futuristic really that trendy? This means they were definitely on Bald Peaks' sativa dominant hybrid, MAC #3. A strain that looks and smells as good as it tastes, MAC #3 creates an uplifting, imaginative experience without slowing you down. It can easily put you in a far-out mindset, convincing you to rock a vinyl jumpsuit all night long. Take a hit and hold it, because you’re sure not getting your outfit off anytime soon!

Country Style Hats We’re big fans of hats, but there's something about these particular hats that leaves us scratching our heads. Perhaps we're triggered because the man on the cover of "Where the Red Fern Grows" is wearing one. Only under the influence

of Bald Peaks' Hazmat OG can someone hold their head high in a lid like this. Why? Because Hazmat OG gives users a rush of energy while also delivering a spacy buzz, precisely what you need to don this daring trend: to be out of this world.

Denim Outfits Even though they were years after the ‘70s denim fashion trend had come and gone, Brittany Spears and Justin Timberlake seem to be the only two people who can make denim-on-denim outfits iconic. A look that goes against every fashion rule out there, someone who wore this outfit was clearly partaking in Bald Peaks' Dosi D’oh. If you're going to pull this look off, you have to be so relaxed and chill nothing will bother you, which is exactly what Dosi D’oh delivers.

W

hen many think about the 1970s, the visual image that comes to mind is Woodstock. A cultural touchstone, Woodstock brought together half a million people living in peace for three days. Together they united to share food, music, and of course, a whole lot of weed. A cultural festival unlike any we have today, Woodstock was the peak of a youth movement that felt like it could transform the world.

The core of Woodstock was music. Acts were immortalized as icons of the era, delivering the performances of their lives or launching their careers. And while it is undeniable that Woodstock was a significant moment in music history, many often don't realize that the 1970s were packed with all sorts of music. In fact, the 1970s created an eclectic musical bridge between the rebelliousness of the 1960s and the cheerful songs of the 1980s, with multiple musical genres that are all deserving of a closer look. As cannabis enthusiasts, we thought we'd bring the often forgotten genres to life by relating them to cannabis products we all know and love. Of course, we chose the brand Rogue River to do just that. Because, like music was the core of Woodstock, Rogue River is the core of how cannabis is intended. Dedicated to cultivating the best sun-grown cannabis on the market, Rogue River is a family-owned cannabis farm that happens to be one of only 15 brands in Oregon that are Certified Kind. They are the real deal, a brand that contains the core elements of cannabis. Without further ado, here are the ‘70s musical genres worthy of a listen.

20 | Chalice Farms Magazine

Disco If ABBA isn't immediately coming to mind, you might just be too young. After the contentious nature of the Vietnam era, many people sought refuge from political and social unrest in dance clubs as a place to have a good time, escape, and listen to disco music. And if you’re looking for an escape, one hit of Rogue River Magic Melon will do just that! Aptly named after its magical effects, Magic Melon is a burst of euphoria with an entire body high.

Funk A form of rhythmic, danceable music, funk emerged in the mid-1960s by melding soul, jazz, and rhythm and blues. Funk music is characterized by syncopated bass lines and continuous, contagious drum grooves and is, well, funky. In many ways, funk music is a choose your own adventure with a range of different styles fitting into one genre, which reminded us of Mixtape. Like the eclectic mix of sounds coming together, Mixtape is a hybrid that combines the best qualities of sativa and indica for a soothing high with depth.

Soul Soul music comprises gospel, rhythm and blues, and jazz, and is characterized by an intensity of feeling and vocal embellishments. The only other “thing” that can give you the same sensation as soul is Rogue River’s Key Lime Pie, a strain that will mellow your mind and help you relax into sweet bliss and happiness.

Pop In the 1950s and 1960s, pop music comprised rock and roll and youth-oriented influences. Rock and pop music remained roughly interchangeable until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible music. Pop, short for popular, is a musical genre that’s always in style, just like Rogue River’s Jazz pack. After a boost of euphoria and an overwhelming sense of happiness and laughter, Jazz will have you smiling ear to ear.

A Select History Since the formation of the United States of America on July 4, 1776, cannabis has been around (and enjoyed). Its history, however, is long and rather tumultuous. Initially utilized as a textile material and later a medicinal ingredient, our favorite plant became highly contentious through the years. Here is a brief timeline:

After many years of enjoyment, cannabis started getting a bad reputation due to recreational usage in the American south, especially among jazz musicians. Labeled derogatory names, cannabis was associated with immigrants, and many began to fear the drug due to the association.

The New York Academy of Medicine printed a report that claimed cannabis was only a mild intoxicant.

1940s

1920s Cannabis dates back to the earliest days of settlement, when hemp was grown like any other crop. In fact, hemp production was highly encouraged because it could make clothing, paper, food products, and more.

1600s

The cannabis party got started! Weed was not just widely accepted in mainstream medicine, but it was also an ingredient in many over-the-counter products.

1930s Cannabis was criminalized, with politicians claiming it led to insanity, and was associated with crime and violence. The Marijuana Tax Act was enacted, which confined cannabis usage to only those that could pay a heavy excise tax for detailed authorized industrial and medical use.

1840s

1700s Our very first President, George Washington, wrote in his journal expressing his interest in farming hemp and questioning the possible medicinal benefits of cannabis.

A major breakthrough hardware system emerges from none other than Select. The culmination of years of research and development produce Cliq, a new vape that significantly impacts and upgrades the consumer's experience.

2021 Select Cannabis is introduced into the world and revolutionizes cannabis consumption. A puff and a bad cough led to a bright idea to devise safer cartridges. With hand-filled cartridges to ensure quality, followed by inspection through four quality control stations, Select creates a cannabis experience full of flavor with an unfailing smooth feel.

2015 Lawmakers continue their do-si-do with cannabis. However, more and more states legalize weed for recreational use.

2000s

The Boggs Act created severe mandatory punishments for offenses involving cannabis and various other drugs.

1950s

While Oregon, Maine, and Alaska decriminalized cannabis, congress enacted the Controlled Substances Act, which established weed as a Schedule I drug, alongside LSD and heroin. The Shafer Commission advised that individual usage of cannabis be decriminalized, but President Richard Nixon disregarded their guidance, and declared the war on drugs that would consume parents and politicians and fill prisons for decades to come.

1996 California voters supported Proposition 215, which legalized cannabis for medicinal usage at the state level.

1970s

1980s 1960s Cannabis began gaining popularity once again, especially amongst the counterculture. Its popularity was further bolstered when reports from President John F. Kennedy revealed that weed did not influence violence or lead to the use of more dangerous drugs. With the increase in usage, arrests were more prevalent as authorities attempted to crack down on cannabis usage and distribution.

The war on drugs continued throughout the Reagan administration, with lawmakers enacting policy while ignoring scientists, who consistently upheld the relative harmlessness of cannabis use. With "Just Say No" and "D.A.R.E" programs enacted, use remained criminalized, and penalties and mandatory sentences were upheld.

Joints are arguably the most iconic way to consume cannabis. Small and portable, you can take them anywhere and spark up where you please. And they’re the best way to get even closer to your friends, there is nothing like a little puff, puff pass! To help you and your friends create an undeniable bond this summer, we’re going to teach you how to roll a joint!

Step 1: Prepare Cannabis

Break down your buds into shake. If your weed is dried well, it should break down easily. A grinder keeps your hand from getting sticky and thus sticking to the joint paper. If you don’t have a grinder, you can break the flower down by hand, using scissors, or any number of other methods. For great quality and an awesome high, pick up some Sugar Tree cannabis from your local Chalice dispensary! Specializing in sun-grown flower from the Rogue River Valley, Sugar Tree embraces their landscape, allowing the natural elements to come together to create premier cannabis.

Step 2: Crutch

Make a crutch, also called a tip or filter. You can make a crutch out of just about anything, but thin cardboard or business cards are solid go-tos. A lot of joint papers also include crutch material with their packaging. Start with a few accordion folds at the end of the cardboard, then roll the material to the desired thickness of your joint. The crutch isn’t absolutely necessary, but it does help keep the shake from falling out of the end or into your mouth as you smoke. It also adds some stability to the joint and allows you to enjoy every bit of bud without burning your fingertips.

Step 3: Pack the Joint

Fill the paper with the shake and the crutch (if you’ve made one). Once the paper has the right amount of shake (a half gram to a gram usually does the trick), you can begin to form and shape the joint with your fingers. There are a lot of different types and flavors of joint papers available. Many people prefer hemp papers because they tend to be thin but strong, and burn evenly without affecting the flavor of your weed.

Step 4: Roll the Joint

This step can make or break the quality of your joint. Tuck the unglued side of the paper into the roll, roll it up, and use the glued edge to tack down one end of the paper, using just a little bit of moisture.

Step 5: Seal the Deal

@SUGAR_TREE_FARM

24 | Chalice Farms Magazine

Finally, pack the end of the joint to help ensure an even burn. A pen is great, but you can use just about anything. Some good options if you’re on the go: the tip of your shoelace, the drawstring on your hoodie, or a small stick. If you’re not planning on sparking your joint right away, you may want to close the tip with a twist

This Mother's Day, introduce your mama to products that show you care about her emotional and mental health: cannabis products from grön. A local Portland, Oregon based company, grön is dedicated to creating products that empower, enlighten, and leave the world a little better than they found it. They believe that everyone deserves a chance to experience what life has to offer, savoring each moment free from stress and restlessness. Their products are the most delicious, cannabis-infused edibles you will ever taste! Using single-origin, fair-trade sourced, organic ingredients, grön has expanded its line of chocolates to include oils and sugar-coated pearls. What mama doesn't like chocolate, especially when it has fantastic health benefits? CBD and THC are natural, organic remedies for a wide range of health concerns. THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces a high sensation, and is often used to mitigate pain, depression, anxiety, and loss of appetite. CBD is non-psychoactive and contains no THC; it does not create a high feeling associated with

cannabis. Instead, it produces relief from pain, inflammation, and other ailments, without the mind-altering effects. Beyond the delicious taste and health benefits, we particularly like grön’s products because of their corporate responsibility. From integrity in the workplace to responsible sourcing, we trust anything grön produces. Moreover, we applaud how grön took what was once a mysterious product that was relatively new on the market and mainstreamed it for people who might not feel comfortable going into a cannabis store. In doing so, grön produced an approachable brand that showcased CBD and THC benefits in a way that everyone could understand. This makes grön the best introduction for a mama who has never tried cannabis.

Homemade Twix Bars Serves 20

Ingredients 11 Tbsp. butter ½ cup sugar 2 cups cake flour ½ tsp. salt 21 oz. caramels

Directions COOKIE 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a 13x9 inch baking pan with aluminum foil, making sure to leave some overhang. Spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray. 2. Place the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl and beat together on medium speed for about 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add the flour and salt, mixing on low just until the flour is mixed in. Scrape the dough into the pan and press into a thin, even layer. 3. Bake the cookie base for 18-20 minutes, turning halfway to cook evenly. It should be a light golden brown when ready. If overcooked it will be very crumbly. Allow to cool completely.

3 Tbsp. heavy cream

CARAMEL LAYER

1 lb. semisweet chocolate or chocolate-flavored candy coating, plus 2 Milk Blast Chocolates (50mg THC total)

1. While the base cools, place unwrapped caramels in a large, microwave-safe bowl with 2 Tbsp. cream. Microwave caramels until melted and smooth, stirring every 30 seconds to prevent overheating. Add a little more cream if caramels are stiff, but note this recipe works best with smooth, soft caramels.

2. Pour the melted caramel over the cooled cookie crust and smooth into an even layer. 3. Refrigerate for about 1 hour until caramel is completely cooled.

CHOCOLATE COATING 1. Melt the chocolate and Blast Chocolates in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds, until smooth. 2. Remove the caramel covered cookie from the pan using the foil as handles. Start by cutting in half the long way, then cut 10 bars from each half. Use a sharp knife to prevent the base from crumbling, and vary size as you’d like. 3. Line a tray with aluminum foil. Use forks or other kitchen tools to dip the bars in the melted chocolate and cover the caramel cookie stack completely. Place on the tray and refrigerate for about 10 minutes until the chocolate is set. Based on the The Spruce Eats’ Twix Bar recipe.

Homemade Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Serves 12

Ingredients 1 cup peanut butter ¼ tsp. salt ½ cup powdered sugar 1 (12 oz.) package milk chocolate chips, plus 2 Milk Blast Chocolates (50mg THC total)

Directions 1. Mix peanut butter, salt, and powdered sugar in a small bowl until firm.

Then cool cups in refrigerator again to firm peanut butter.

2. Slowly melt chocolate chips and Blast Chocolates in a bowl over a saucepan of hot, non-boiling water. Stir occasionally for about 3-5 minutes, until smooth.

5. Pour chocolate on top of each and spread to edges. Leave at room temperature or cover in the refrigerator. Turn out of pan when firm.

3. Grease muffin tin cups and spoon chocolate into each cup, filling halfway. Draw chocolate up the edges of each cup until all sides are coated. Cool in the refrigerator until firm.

Disclaimer: Since this recipe is made with peanut butter it will affect the absorption/ activation time in the liver — meaning the high will hit you faster than if it was made without peanut butter. Dose with caution!

Private Stash

Need to finalize

30 | Chalice Farms Magazine

A smoke filled room. The radio plays, not the top 40, something a little more underground. The person to your right nudges you and passes you some of their private stash, the good shit. You inhale, hold it, then exhale fully, wondering at what a glorious time it is to be alive.

The beauty of this scenario is that it can be anywhere, anytime, anyone. It could be a bunch of hippies in a flat in Haight-Ashbury in the ‘60s smoking Panama Red jamming to Joan Baez and The Doors. A group of friends in the ‘70s reminiscing about Woodstock with the latest CCR or Grateful Dead album toking on Acapulco Gold. Or maybe

a group of inner city kids in southern California in the ‘90s, listening to Cypress Hill and smoking OG Kush. No one is judging, everyone is vibing, connecting, and getting high. It’s easy to look on decades past and think of them as a different time, so disconnected from our own. The generations before or after couldn't possibly understand us. But every time has its own wars, unrest, instability, and inequality. There are always things that divide us, politically, socially, and economically. Fortunately there are also things that bring us together. Things that can be enjoyed and shared regardless of race, background, or status. Two of the greatest equalizers are music and cannabis, having bridged gaps and shadowed differences for centuries. Shakespeare said “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” And so does pot, weed, marijuana, kush, chronic, mary jane, and so on. We live in a time of nearly unfettered access to the plant we know and love. So relax, pull up a chair, spark up that doobie, and let’s get to know our Legacy Strains…

OG Kush OG Kush is one of the most sought after strains of cannabis in history. It’s backstory is the stuff of legends. They say that hippies brought seeds back from the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan in the ‘60s, and they were bred with local strains for the next three decades. Then Josh D, one of the top growers in California, challenged Matt “Bubba” Berger to prove that Florida was growing better weed than LA. Berger, already a legend for his Kryptonite “Krippy” strain, grew some weed whose buds were so dense and colorful some of his friends started calling it “Kush Berries.” Kush made its way to LA and the blossoming hip hop scene. This weed was so good, the term Kush became synonymous with all good green bud. In order to differentiate the strain Josh D brought from Florida they started calling it Original Kush, or OG, as in original gangster, legit, respected. It started winning awards everywhere it was entered, and gained the attention of Cypress Hill rapper B-Real. OG Kush became so popular in the late ‘90s that at one point it was worth more than gold! The precious metal that backs our monetary system was priced around $300 an ounce, while an ounce of the Kush was going for a whopping $500! To this day sales for this Legacy Strain’s hybrids are off the charts and continue to win awards. In 2015 Wiz Khalifa launched his own weed brand, Khalifa Kush, promoting several hybrids said to descend from the original OG Kush.

Kush rolled, glass full, I prefer the better things — DRAKE, “UP ALL NIGHT”

“Man, what’s in this shit man?” “Mostly Maui Wowie, but it’s got some Labrador in it.” — CHEECH & CHONG, “UP IN SMOKE”

Maui Wowie If you haven’t heard of Maui Wowie weed, where have you been? Cheech and Chong hotbox their car with it in “Up in Smoke,” Dave Chappelle steals bricks of it from the weed room in “Half Baked,” and it’s the primary ingredient in the legendary bud that sparks Seth Rogen’s shenanigans in “Pineapple Express.” In fact, it may hold the record for most mentions in pop culture. Maui Wowie is a landrace strain, which means that it is a pure strain that developed in its native environment without human interference. It was first introduced to mainlanders in 1969. It may have been the Summer of Love, but many hippies experienced persecution and found sanctuary in the islands of Hawaii. A group of them threw a big summer solstice party where copious amounts of weed was being consumed. When a group of Native Hawaiians showed up the hippies thought they were there to break up the party. Instead, the Hawaiians busted out their own native grown Nahiku Maui weed and passed it around to share. The hippies were awestruck at the high that perfectly represented the island vibes: an energetic and mood-enhancing sativa high with indica notes to keep you calm and relaxed. All they could say was “Wow. Wowie… Maui Wowie!” The name stuck, and that night ushered in a new era of harmony and friendship between the mainlanders and natives. Private Stash Maui Wowie might be the perfect strain to pick up and enjoy with friends, or maybe with someone with whom you don’t see eye to eye? It can’t hurt to try…

Panama Red Panama Red is rumored to be the best weed ever, and was insanely popular in the ‘60s and ‘70s for its psychedelic effects. This 100% sativa is another landrace strain. Harvested from mountains near the Panama Canal, they say one ton of this colorful bud was smuggled into northern California on a fishing boat. The story goes that in the Bay area in 1969, after smoking a tiny joint with his connection and getting high as a kite, one weed dealer bought about five pounds of Panama Red, paying more than he ever had for bud. When he sobered up a bit he realized that he was going to have a tough time selling this weed to hippies for four times the price of a regular ounce. So he bought a pack of wraps, rolled up a dozen pinners, and gave them away to his regular customers. Panama Red exploded on the San Francisco weed scene. People told stories of being so stoned they felt like they were tripping on acid, and everyone who smoked wanted to get their hands on it. By the 2000s it became hard to find Panama Red, as indica strains gained popularity. Lucky for you, Chalice Farms is bringing back this Legacy Strain.

AK 47 If AK 47 were a famous family it would be the Jolie-Pitt crew. This multicultural strain is a mashup of Columbian, Mexican, Thai, and Afghani varieties. It is also one of the most awarded strains in history, and has won awards in both indica and sativa categories. AK 47 was created in the early ‘90s by a biology student in Amsterdam. The origins of the name are a bit harder to trace. Some say it was named for the use of AK 47 assault rifles in the war-torn countries where its parent seeds were from. Others claim it’s a “one hit wonder,” packing the punch of a speeding bullet. A third theory that it’s named for the gunpowder-like smell that can be detected when you smoke it. We’ll likely never know where the name truly came from. What we do know is that this sativa-dominant hybrid is not only award winning but a fan favorite as well. It produces a mind/body high that can both spark creativity and glue you to your couch for several hours, which might explain why it’s beloved by gamers. It also has myriad medical benefits, aiding patients experiencing chronic pain, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and headaches. This is why AK 47 was a no-brainer addition to our Private Stash.

Blueberry If you want the taste and smell of your weed to give you the munchies before you even light up, Blueberry is the strain for you. It’s also great for tricking your family into thinking you’ve been slaving away in the kitchen all day instead of getting high watching the Food Network. Blueberry is the brainchild of legendary breeder DJ Short. Often called the “Willy Wonka of Pot,” DJ Short gave us this delicious bud, as well as the tasty Juicy Fruit and Vanilluna strains. Blueberry came about in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s, when there was a lot of experimentation with landrace strains from all over the world. Short was breeding landrace sativas with indica strains in an attempt to create plants that produced quality flower in a shorter time. The result was an aromatic, dense bud that packs quite a punch. Blueberry has been referred to as “one hit and quit,” even by experienced cannabis users. It’s an indica-heavy hybrid that hits instantly with a head high and ultra relaxation that can easily couchlock the unsuspecting stoner. It is also incredibly useful to treat insomnia, ease stress, mitigate chronic pain, and help with depression and anxiety. It became insanely popular after winning Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000, and is now brought to you as one of our Legacy Strains.

Jack Herer: the man, the myth, the marijuana. Although Jack is considered “The Emperor of Hemp” and was the foremost leader of the movement for cannabis legislation reform, he wasn’t always such a fan. He was once a conservative Republican, and divorced his first wife after she refused to stop smoking weed for him. He didn’t get high until he was 30 years old, and describes the experience as the best feeling he’d ever had. He asked his girlfriend, who had supplied the joints, “Why is this illegal?”. Just four years later he opened a head shop in Venice Beach.

“If you substitute marijuana for tobacco and alcohol, you’ll add eight to 24 years to your life.”

In the early ‘80s, while campaigning for cannabis reform, Jack was arrested for trespassing and spent two weeks in jail. He used his time in lockup wisely, and began writing “The Emperor Wears No Clothes,” a history of hemp as a renewable resource and the system— JACK HERER atic efforts of big business to outlaw its use. This book has changed the mind of many anti-drug crusaders and opened their eyes to the benefits of cannabis. It has also been cited for decades by champions for cannabis reform.

The Jack Herer strain, arguably the most famous sativa in history, was created in the ‘90s in the Netherlands to honor the pot pioneer. If you like an uplifting, mental, psychoactive buzz, this is the Legacy Strain for you.

“No stems no seeds that you don’t need, Acapulco Gold is badass weed.” — CHEECH & CHONG, “UP IN SMOKE”

Acapulco Gold Acapulco Gold might be the end-all-be-all Legacy Strain. Not only is it a favorite of celebrity stoners like Jack Nicholson and Woody Harleson, it was the first weed to get Jack Herer stoned. The Emperor of Hemp himself tells of listening to music and seeing the notes play with each other in the air. “Wow, this is the greatest thing in my life! This was the first time I ever even knew that music had music in it!” It is even rumored to have been sent to future Vice President Dan Quayle as a wedding present. Maybe that’s why he forgot how to spell potato? This landrace strain came to the U.S. from Mexico in 1964, and immediately gained notoriety among the counterculture movement for its quality and potency. The name Acapulco Gold became synonymous with really good weed, thanks to its THC level of around 23%, an unheard of percentage at the time. The strain became so popular that the term Acapulco Gold was added to the Oxford Dictionary in 1965! The effects of smoking this connoisseur weed are motivating and energizing. It’s sure to bring on feelings of euphoria with even the smallest toke. That’s why we’ve added this Legacy Strain to our Private Stash. Luckily, we have enough to share.

Pineapple Express If you want to spark a debate among potheads, bring up the origins of Pineapple Express. Was it launched on the scene after the hugely popular 2008 stoner movie of the same name? Seth Rogen swears it was. Was it developed by G13 labs in the mid-2000s with Hawaiian and Trainwreck genetics as they claim? The world may never know, but that won’t stop us from enjoying “the dopest dope” around. On paper Pineapple Express may seem like nothing special. It’s 17% THC content is merely average, but don’t let that fool you. You’ll get a potent, balanced high leaving you happy, relaxed yet alert, with a clear, focused mind reminiscent of pot closer to 25% THC. It is also often used medically to combat depression and inflammation, making it an obvious choice for our Private Stash.

ost people who consume alcohol, even occasionally, feel completely comfortable doing so in front of children. While you may not want the little ones around if you're tying one on for New Year's Eve, enjoying a cocktail or a glass of wine is perfectly acceptable adult behavior. Do you feel the same way about lighting up a joint? If you answered no, you're not alone. The current legal status in some states and the fact that it is still criminalized in others makes the discussion around weed much trickier than the one that revolves around alcohol. As any parent knows, these types of conversations can be awkward and uncomfortable but wildly essential and beneficial to you and your child. While we do not claim to be parenting experts, we would like to offer some advice to get the conversation started and help you open a dialogue with your child about cannabis use. Just like with alcohol, sex, and hard drugs, your child will learn about weed. The education can either come from you or the internet, media, and other kids. If you initiate the conversation, you get a head start on shaping your child's attitude towards weed and ensuring that they have accurate and healthy information. And just like the conversation around other potentially harmful things, history tells us that demanding abstinence rarely works.

Where do you start? Every child is different, and you want to shape the conversation to begin a safe and open dialogue where your child will feel comfortable. Are they a rule follower? A rebel? Do they have positive or negative feelings about alcohol? Is there an addict or abuser in their life already? Are they the type to experiment with things that are off limits? Answering these questions will help you identify how receptive your child may be to different approaches. Often there are organic opportunities to bring up the subject of cannabis use. There's no shortage of references to it in movies, TV, and music, and depending on your child's age, the discussion may already be happening at school. Begin by letting them know that you want to have an open conversation, that you want to hear their opinion, and that you are not here to judge, only to listen and talk. Ask what they already know. What their feelings are towards cannabis and cannabis users. Do they know anyone who has tried it? Have they tried it? Don't be shocked by any answers they give. Be understanding, and provide them with space to open up.

Kids and cannabis If your child is in middle school or older, they likely know about cannabis and possibly know kids who have tried it. They also probably have some ideas about it that are false or misleading. Take the opportunity to educate them while understanding that it is often hard for parents to convince kids that they know what it's like to be a teenager. Be honest, don't exaggerate the potential benefits or harm of cannabis.

Adults and cannabis As cannabis users, most of us are working to destigmatize weed, removing it from the category of street drug, akin to heroin and cocaine, and aligning it with recreational substances like alcohol and kava. This is especially true if cannabis is legal in your state. Ideally, we would all feel as comfortable with our kids knowing that we spark up on the weekends as we are with ordering a drink in front of them (although maybe not smoking in front of them, because... contact high). The best way to destigmatize is through education. Did you know that first-time users are 2.5 times more likely to become dependent on alcohol and 7.5 times more likely to become dependent on nicotine as they are on cannabis? That's not to say that you should encourage your kids to give it a shot, but if they recognize that it is less addictive and less dangerous than some of the substances they see regularly, it can help them view pot in a different light. If you treat your cannabis use as a clandestine activity that you try to hide and even lie about, you'll likely add to the stigmatization. Being open about your pot use can lead to your child feeling just as comfortable talking to you about cannabis as they do about alcohol.

The best way to destigmatize is through education.

Teach kids that, like alcohol, cannabis is not appropriate for children and becomes much worse with regular consumption. However, if your child has already tried it or wants to, it may be appropriate to practice mitigation strategies. Aim to reduce dangerous or problematic behavior, not experimentation. When some kids hear that something is off-limits, it only piques their interest. Instead, talk about what form they are consuming, how often they use, in what setting. Concentrates are precisely what their name implies, very concentrated THC content. These can be much more dangerous for kids who are inexperienced with dosage. Stress the importance of not driving while high or with someone high. If kids know you're comfortable with these types of conversations, they are more likely to come to you for advice and be open about that side of their life.

Don't forget to be open and upfront with kids about the potential dangers of cannabis use. While medical and recreational use for adults is completely fine, a teenager who smokes pot every day is much more likely to have problems in school, socially, and at home. Many parents feel more comfortable if their teens try alcohol at home for the first time so that they can understand the effects in a safe environment. Many parents understand that "kids will be kids" and will drink at parties on the weekends. Do you feel the same way about weed? Why or why not? Your attitudes about cannabis will likely be reflected in your children. The most important thing is to have a conversation. Don't avoid it because you're unsure how to start or what their reaction will be. You can begin as early as elementary school by explaining that there are appropriate things for grown-ups, like alcohol, coffee, and many prescription drugs, that are not appropriate for kids. If you add cannabis to this conversation at an early age, they will understand that if they are ever faced with it outside the home, it is something that they can safely tell you about. If we can remove the taboo surrounding cannabis for the next generation, we can be part of the continued push for legalization, decriminalization, and acceptance.

Go Girls, Go Cannabis Cannabis cultivation has historically been a male-dominated industry, but it's time to change that. More and more women are entering the cannabis game and breaking the glass ceiling.

Here are some of the ways women are moving the industry in the right direction!

LEGALIZATION

Women helping women is something we'll never get tired of hearing about. As more research has come to light about the health benefits of cannabis for women, femaleled organizations have been at the forefront of campaigns to legalize weed. DESTIGMATIZATION

EXPANDING USAGE

When you can’t find something, ask your mom. When you're confused or overwhelmed, talk to your mom. Moms are always right, and are therefore leading the way to cannabis destigmatization. If moms begin treating cannabis consumption like drinking wine, we’re well on our way to complete societal acceptance.

The benefits of cannabis go beyond traditional medical and recreational use. CBD, CBN, and other cannabinoids have expanded into many over-the-counter wellness, skincare, and beauty products. Powered by the open-mindedness of women, cannabis is now available in various products ranging from shampoos to joint cream.

Our takeaway? Time to start supporting women-owned cannabis businesses. One of our favorites: Meraki Gardens. A female-owned and family-operated indoor garden, Meraki is passionate about organic cultivation and proud to be Clean Green Certified and Kosher Certified. Focusing on sustainable growing practices and finding ways to lower their carbon footprint, Meraki Gardens gives every plant the same amount of love and attention to create an experience filled with good vibrations and a high you'll never forget.

Get the Good Stuff Fig. 1 Smell & Taste

Today, buying cannabis is easy. But it’s still hard to tell the difference between good and bad weed. We’ve made a cheat sheet on what to look for (you’re welcome).

dusty, your flower will dry out and burn far too fast. Pro tip: If your buds are fairly new but dry, put half an apple in a ziploc with your weed overnight, the flower will absorb the moisture and be fluffy the next day.

From vibrant green to dark purple, high-quality bud comes in a wide range of colors. Focus on the crystals on the surface of the flower, the more crystals you can see, the higher the THC content. Higher THC equals stronger effects, smell, and flavor.

While this doesn't necessarily confirm good or bad weed, it does say a few things. The thicker the bud, the better, but a well-trimmed bud without extra leaves or stems proves that your cannabis was packaged with care.

3. Texture

This might go without saying, but if you see any mold or bugs before lighting up, you might have contaminated bud. TOSS.

Your cannabis should ideally be a mix of wet and sticky. But run if your bud feels

irst thing first, legality. You must be 21 years or older or have a medical card to grow cannabis in the state of Oregon. In Oregon, you can have four plants per residence and 10 seeds if you are a recreational patient, but laws vary by state, so know before you grow. If you are an Oregon Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) cardholder, you are allowed to have six mature plants per residence, 12 immature plants 24 inches or taller, and 36 immature plants that are under 24 inches.

In or out Cannabis can be grown inside or outside, but it must be out of public view if grown outside. Before you start growing, decide which is right for you. The required space, equipment, and resources will vary depending on your decision. Growing outdoors is easiest and cheapest because you can utilize natural resources, but you will need the proper space to ensure your plants receive ample sunlight. Growing outdoors also allows for larger plants and bigger yields. Growing indoors is more expensive because you will be spending money on equipment and utilities to mimic sunlight, wind, etc. Still, you have more control over every aspect of your growing environment and can set up almost anywhere. Overall, it typically takes about 10-32 weeks to grow, depending on what method you choose and how big you want your plants to get.

Stages of life The cannabis plant starts as either a seed or clone, and ensuring you are purchasing from a reputable source is important. Our go-to vendor: Oregon Roots. An indoor and outdoor cannabis producer, Oregon Roots is not just reputable but also known for its incredible, premium cannabis. After purchase, how you start growing your plant depends on genetics, strain and type of cannabis. Following the seedling stage is the vegetative stage, the most extended portion of a plant’s life. During this time, the plant will almost fully develop except buds will not occur until the next stage, flowering, which happens roughly 2 months before harvesting. At harvest, you will cut, trim, and cure your plants.

Nourishing your plants LIGHT. Cannabis is a photoperiod plant, which means the amount of light it gets will determine when it flowers or produces buds. With outdoor grows, lighting conditions vary based on the weather, and sunlight hours are reduced with the shorter days in fall and winter. Indoors, you can control this by changing artificial light from 12 to 18 hours a day. WATER. It's a plant, of course it needs water, but the amount of water you plant needs will change as it grows. It also depends on where you are growing, your local climate and weather will influence outdoor plants. NUTRIENTS. These are present in your soil and the things you add to it. All the nutrients needed for the cannabis plant's development are naturally present in the environment, but to help your plants grow faster and produce a better end product you’ll want to fertilize them. The three nutrients that a cannabis plant needs in large quantities are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, known as their macro-nutrients. They also require smaller amounts of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur. Nitrogen is necessary for the vegetative stage and is an essential part of chlorophyll; without it the plant can’t turn sunlight into energy. Phosphorus is key to making nutrients easily absorbed, and potassium is responsible for regulating water and salt concentrations within the plant. It is typical for outdoor growers to add powdered nutrients to their soil. This will give the plant

CANNABIS FERTILIZERS Some good options for cannabis fertilizers are General Hydroponics, Botanicare, and Dyna-gro. Some organic fertilizers are blood or fish meal for nitrogen, bone meal or bat guano for phosphorus, wood ash or kelp meal for potassium, dolomite lime for calcium and magnesium, and Epsom salts for magnesium and sulfur. Nutrient solution bottles (indoor) and fertilizer bags (outdoor) will indicate how much of the three macronutrients are in the product in the form of N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium). EXAMPLE: 10-4-4 means it contains 10% nitrogen, 4% phosphorus, and 4% potassium by weight. 1. A good rule is that vegetative fertilizer should be high in nitrogen, low in phosphorus, and moderate potassium, something around 9-4-5. 2. As the plant transitions into flowering, taper off the nitrogen and focus on potassium and phosphorus, something around 3-8-7. 3. In the last week or so before you harvest, give your plants only water to clear up any nutrient buildup in the buds, this is known as flushing.

all or most of the nutrients that it needs for its entire life cycle. You can always add more nutrients later to the top of the soil, called top dressing. Indoor growers typically use liquid nutrients mixed with water to feed their plants. This takes a bit more time because you have to measure and mix it once or twice a week. AIRFLOW. Cannabis plants need some airflow to survive and thrive. This comes naturally when growing outdoors, but indoors you will need to simulate wind using fans.

Harvest Now comes the best part! Harvesting your weed is part science, part art. The more you get to know your plants, the better you’ll understand the best time to harvest premium flower. Some signs are yellowing, curling leaves that may fall off, plump buds that have stopped growing, and drooping branches due to the weight of all those juicy buds. A great way to know when to harvest is to pay attention to the trichomes, the shiny, stinky crystals that contain all those yummy cannabinoids. You’ll need to start checking early with a magnifying glass, but when you notice the crystals turn from clear to cloudy, you’ll know it’s time. You can harvest your bud all at once or in sections, starting with the top, which generally ripens first. Once you’ve chopped off a section, follow these steps to prep your pot for smoking. DRY. Hang your plants upside down for 5-7 days, possibly longer if you live in a humid climate. Light degrades THC, so opt for a dark room if available. Keep the air

circulating but not blowing directly on the plants. Invest in a decent hygrometer to measure humidity; you’ll want your buds around 60% before curing. TRIM. You can do this before or after drying, it’s a matter of preference. Remove the larger fan leaves, but don’t worry about the small ones coming out of the buds. Then break the buds down for curing and storage. CURING. This is a step some people skip, but we don’t recommend doing that. Curing your cannabis enhances flavor, makes the smoke smoother, and helps retain quality when stored. Seal your buds in airtight containers like mason jars and store them in a dark place. “Burp” the jars every day for the first few weeks by opening the lids for 10-20 minutes to let them breathe. After that, you can burp them once a week for 6-8 weeks until they’re ready for smoking! When it comes to growing cannabis, the essential tools are excitement and dedication! There are nuances to growing, whether indoors or outdoors; being involved in the process can be educational, relaxing, and rewarding. Growing your favorite strains or even cross-breeding yourself can be a whole new way to enjoy cannabis. Happy planting!

The Entourage Effect You have your group of friends, your entourage, if you will. But have you heard of the entourage effect? Many of us are already familiar with CBD and THC, the two most well-known and well researched cannabinoids on earth. But cannabis is far more than just these two components, it produces many other cannabinoids like CBN, CBC, CBG, and more. And then there are terpenes, the aromatic compounds also found in essential oils that give plants their smell. For a plant that is historically associated with "lazy" people, cannabis is quite complex!

@ENTOURAGE_CANNABIS

48 | Chalice Farms Magazine

HERE'S WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: When we smoke or vaporize cannabis, our bodies take in hundreds of botanical compounds. Each one has a unique effect and benefit, and their behavior may change when other compounds are present; this is the entourage effect. The theory suggests that all compounds work together synergistically to increase therapeutic potential, meaning the more diverse compounds we consume, the more likely we will experience symptom relief. Essentially, terpenes enhance the effect of cannabinoids, and when multiple cannabis plant compounds are present along with CBD extract, it increases the health benefits of the CBD product. We can't talk all about this effect without talking about the brand, Entourage Cannabis, who sets the standard! After they harvest their raw flower, they use whole flower with a proprietary

extraction process, turning it into pure cannabis extract while still keeping the strain-specific taste and smell. This way, they're able to make an oil that can be sold in its raw form or used to create a wide array of cannabis-infused products that we see on the market today. They've teamed up with a vast network of likeminded growers to provide the best extraction material on the market. This results in the highest quality end product while keeping up with the increasing consumer demand. What makes them different from the rest is their innovative solutions. Entourage Cannabis strives every day to set the standard for high-quality cannabis oil, and they improve the marketplace by putting the consumer first. That's an entourage we want to be a part of!

Even though cannabis has been a part of America's culture since our nation's beginning, the ‘60s and ‘70s are the eras most iconically associated with weed. We can all picture happy hippies passing joints and living their best lives. The counterculture movement gained traction in a way we’d never seen, inspiring large, peaceful gatherings like Woodstock and the Human Be-in, where cannabis consumption was enjoyed en masse. Although the ‘70s were a totally blazing time, the bud they enjoyed was a far cry from the craft cannabis available today. Why is that? Let's journey back to the 1960s. Weed was illegally snuck into the country from Central and South America, usually in the form of tightly packed bricks, via boats, planes, and trucks. This "brick weed" might sound fine, but it was usually a combination of leaves, stems, flowers, and random bits and pieces of the plant. In reality, a tiny portion of these bricks was actually feminized flower, the consumable part of weed. Because everything had to be smuggled in, keeping the bricks in good condition was not easy. Much of the product was damaged in the transportation process and subsequent distribution. Plus, any usable weed was considerably older by the time it got into the hands of consumers, so the THC had degraded. While the hippie generations made do with what they had, most of their cannabis was much less potent, and overall just not that great. Today's stuff, on the other hand? Friends, we live in the golden age of really, really good weed. Adventurers came back from the hippie trail and brought buds, seeds, and knowledge from Europe and Asia. The accessibility of hydroponic systems in the 1980s led to an explosion in the popularity of home cultivation. More Americans were able

to grow discreetly in their very own backyards or basements as a result of this new technology. This led to fresher, more accessible weed and the ability to cross-breed for favorable genetics. This capacity to grow cannabis on a small scale ushered in a new era of higher-quality, connoisseur strains. Although it’s impossible to compare because of differences in testing, today's cannabis is generally considered much more potent than weed from the ‘70s. As legalization accelerated through the early 2000s, new technology has made it easier to breed for potency, desired cannabinoids, and targeted medicinal benefits. I mean, we can literally read a weed menu and order whatever suits our mood! The cannabis brands we know and love have had the freedom to take cultivation to whole new levels, producing ridiculously good cannabis. One such brand? White Label Extracts (WLE). Their philosophy is built on long-term, mutually beneficial business partnerships with farmers that share their values and company standards. WLE’s mission is to provide the highest quality, cleanest, and safest product on the market at a competitive price, all while ensuring a high degree of transparency and ethical standards. Farmers that share their aim to openness and integrity are the foundation of their high-quality, pesticide-free extract. We can’t wait to see what the future has in store for the cannabis industry, and what exciting new products we’ll see from our favorite brands like White Label Extracts.

We took a trek over to Bald Peak Farms, our grow facility, to catch up with some of the people responsible for our favorite flower. This 10,000 square foot, state-of-the-art cannabis farm is located at the highest point on Chehalem Mountain, far above the pollutants found in urban areas. Read on to find out what makes Bald Peak Flower so amazing, then

CF: How are you watering the plants? AP: We are all hand watering right now. There are 2100 plants at any one given time in just the flower house. Meghan and Derek always say: “If you follow the hose, you’ll find Anthony.”

CF: What strain are you most excited about?

AP: Probably our Platinum Kush Breath, it’s just super frosty and has amazing bud structure.

Chalice Farms: Tell us about growing on the top of a mountain?

CF: What made you want to grow cannabis?

Anthony: Elevation doesn’t always help. There are some benefits and also some things that aren’t as great. We had a good January because we are above the clouds and it was sunny and nice up on the mountain. But we get ice storms in the winter, the power will go out, and it can create a mess of problems.

AP: I taught a group of elementary school kids STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and how to apply that in a garden setting. I learned to grow a garden there and developed a love for horticulture. And then I got an opportunity to be in Oregon and learn about growing cannabis.

Anthony has been with Chalice since April of 2021, coming to us just down the hill from Bald Peak at Yerba Buena. Having a true love and passion for horticulture and garden cultivation in general, Anthony decided to apply this passion to cannabis cultivation. Turning a plant into medicine with an enthusiasm for soil, nutrients, increasing yields, water resources and more has helped Anthony push Bald Peak to what it is today.

CF: What are your top priorities? AP: With our climate we look at flowering time. This is the main one, along with plant and bud structure, quality, and smell. And we have to watch out for pests and pathogens like botrytis (gray mold) and mites. The weather outside affects the climate inside, and the mites ramp up when it starts to get warm.

CF: What would you say that you guys do well? AP: What we do well is plant maintenance. We spend a lot of time making sure the plants are pruned and trellised. It’s time consuming but it’s so beneficial and produces a better product.

Most of our plants start out here. We control everything from the humidity to photosynthesis. Not all plants make it past this stage, we’re looking for specific qualities in each strain, which can differ based on the growing environments.

VEG 1 & 2:

This is where we monitor the light cycle. At first the plants need 18 hours on and 16 hours off. Once they start flowering they need 12 on, 12 off. We also use heaters to regulate the temperature and prune periodically to encourage upward growth. The plants spend four to six weeks in the veg room. Harvest time is generally 60 days, but our plants tend to finish five to 10 days early, so 45 days within our greenhouses.

DRYING ROOM:

Once the plant is ready to be harvested we chop the entire plant off right at its trunk and then weigh it on a hanging scale. It stays here for roughly two weeks. We check to see if the plant is ready by bending the stem. If it bends it needs more drying time, but if it snaps we know it’s ready. They are then bucked into bins. Bucking is the process of trimming small branches or buds from the plants to increase cannabis yields. The room is monitored to keep the temperature and humidity consistent, and they utilize crank wheel tables to make life easier.

This is where the plants are housed until they grow big enough to be transplanted into 10 gallon pots. We use LED light bulbs which give off a gentle, blue light spectrum, allowing the plants to develop a root base and to get acclimated. They stay here for about a week before being transferred to the veg house.

Can you dig it? (yes, yes you can) Finally, cannabis that encompasses the fun of the ‘70s, but with the upgraded technology of the 21st century. The Groovy Doobie is, well, a really groovy doobie. With 5 grams of tightly packed, strain-specific cannabis neatly rolled into a spiral cone, this big-hitter delivers a unique inhale and ultra-smooth smoking experience. So go ahead, get groovy!

Always Eat Your Greens

Eating cannabis is a time honored tradition. When you think of edibles, you probably think of pot brownies from the early 1960s, but edibles have a vast and diverse history that dates as far back as the 10th century in India. The first cannabis edible recipe appeared in the United States in 1954 in “The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook.” Edibles have come a long way since then, and are more advanced today than ever. We all remember our first encounter with edibles. For many people it didn't go so well, and may have scared you into never trying them again. To better understand how edibles affect us, let's look at the difference between pot brownies and candy edibles like Drops. When baking brownies, the cannabinoids are usually dissolved in fat or oil. Baked goods have a fairly complex structure and a lot of ingredients compared with other edibles. These are sometimes slow-acting, though they vary considerably from product to product or person to person. Because they're baked and exposed to heat, it's likely that some of the potency will be burned off. The pot brownies of the ‘60s were all homemade, which meant you really had no idea how much weed went in the batter and how strong they would be. When it comes to gummies like Drops, they tend to be more fast-acting than their other fat-heavy counterparts. Due to their formulation constraints, gummies are often made with cannabis distillate to avoid a strong cannabis flavor. They are digested quickly, meaning they set in and taper off quicker than the brownies of old. But they can also be enhanced in ways other edibles can't, like having terpenes added to mimic strain profiles and provide their specific effects. Drops are a low-dose alternative with a variety of flavors and doses like Lemon (sativa), Orange (sativa), Lime (hybrid), Watermelon (indica), Cherry (indica), 1:1 Cranberry, 1:2 Raspberry, 4:1 Blueberry, 2:1 Blackberry, and 1:4 Strawberry. And because they’re from a responsible company, you know exactly how much THC you’re getting and can dose appropriately. Now that you know the differences between the two, there's no reason to worry about freaking out and having a bad edible trip. Drops are called "the approachable edible" because all are welcome. They’re committed to tolerance in more ways than one. Low-dose gummies work for any experience level.

Retro Skincare Tips That

Still Work!

56 | Chalice Farms Magazine

Did your grandma ever critique your skincare routine? Talk about how simple steps and natural products are better than today’s complex formulas with added chemicals? We agree, and it’s time to give a listen to the golden generation and their classic skincare tips that still work! Fifth & Root likes to keep it natural with the magic in the minerals, so try the line with this advice to get back to basics.

Seek Shade

Drink More Water

The sun’s UV rays are #1 when it comes to skin damage. Protect yourself by choosing shade over direct sunlight whenever possible, and using personal shade like hats, sunnies, and umbrellas when it’s not. Harmful UV rays can lead to early aging, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, spots, and damage.

Water plays a crucial role when it comes to hydration and the appearance of your skin. But drinking water doesn’t have to be boring, adding infusions to your H2O can not only taste great, many can aid in hydration! Add ginger, lime, or berries to your glass, or try fresh fruit and juices. If you really want to level up your bevvie, reach for Fifth & Root's Drops of Sunshine. This tincture helps protect skin from the inside out against urban stress – a root cause of sensitivity, discomfort, and dullness. Add a few drops to your water, tea, or smoothie. Every juicy sip will help support healthy skin and overall wellness!

Apply Sunscreen Everywhere While tanned skin has been the hallmark for summertime, healthy skin is more important. Enjoy the rays and boost your vitamin D, but make sure that you’re protecting your skin as much as possible and covering everywhere exposed to the sun. It’s easy to forget your hands, feet, or the part in your hair. Opt for a natural sunscreen free of harmful oxybenzone.

Go Fragrance Free Something might smell amazing, but that sweet scent can damage your skin. Fragrances (sometimes labeled “perfume” or “parfum”) are found in a surprisingly large number of products. While they may smell great, they can dry out your skin and increase sensitivity. Try switching to an unscented or naturally scented product. Fifth & Root uses terpenes (the aromatic compounds that give most plants their scent) because they’re less sensitizing than synthetic fragrances.

Apply Moisturizer Within Three Minutes of Washing A clean face is key to great skincare, but cleansing not only removes the dirt, it also strips skin of essential moisture. After washing, hydrate right away with a light moisturizer like Fifth & Root’s Second Nature. Damp skin is more receptive to topical products and the moisturizer will actually help seal in water already on your skin.

Use a Soft Cloth to Wash Your Skin Choosing the right washcloth is more important than you’d think, they actually play a key role in your skincare regime. They can help to keep your face clean, exfoliated, and looking its best. Choose a washcloth that is gentle enough to use on your youngest family members, and make sure to wash it regularly.

Use Warm (Not Hot) Water Warm water is the best for overall skin health. It helps to ensure that your facial cleanser (like Fifth & Root’s Karmic Cleanse) gets the right amount of foaming action, removes enough dirt and impurities from your skin's surface, and balances your natural oils.

before bed. Your face will thank you in the morning!

Pay Attention to What You Eat Many foods can give your skin a much needed boost that goes beyond cucumbers on your eyes. Vitamin C, which promotes collagen production and brightens skin, can be found in fruits and vegetables like mango, pineapple, oranges, and beets. Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and seeds support skin membranes. Antioxidants protect the skin and reduce pigmentation, and are found in blueberries, strawberries, red peppers, turmeric, maple syrup, and raw honey. Try Fifth & Root’s Moonlight Cooling Glow Mask with turmeric to help reduce sensitivity, redness, and puffiness! Nutrients and antioxidants aren't’ just great for your skin, they support gut health and overall wellness too.

Try Something New CBD wasn’t around when your grandma was taking care of her skin, but that doesn't mean she wouldn’t have used it if it was available! Its balancing and nourishing properties are what has made it one of the biggest innovations in skincare. Here are a few ways that CBD can benefit your skin: with antioxidants, * Packed minerals, and vitamins

Take Off All Makeup Before Bed We’ve all been tempted to fall right to sleep after a fun night out, but doing so can cause acne and irritation. Your skin needs to breathe! There’s nothing wrong with wearing a full face of makeup during the day, but if your skin can’t get enough oxygen at night you’ll find your face more oily and acne-prone. Do your skin a favor and wash your makeup off
