Avoid icy walkways, as animals can slip and pull muscles and ligaments. Slips and falls also can aggravate existing conditions like hip dysplasia.
When snow is deep, clear an area where your dog can relieve itself. Many dogs, particularly small ones, will not relieve themselves in deep snow.
After a walk, wash and dry your dog’s paws. Salt and other material spread on sidewalks cause irritation to the feet.
Do not leave dogs outside for extended periods of time. Water in bowls can freeze when left outside, preventing your pet’s access to water.

When shoveling snow, keep dogs away. Many dogs like to jump at snow as it flies from the shovel. They may run into the sharp edge of the shovel and get cut.
Antifreeze has a sweet odor and taste that seems to lure animals. A very small amount of the liquid can be lethal to cats and dogs. If an animal has had contact with contaminated surfaces, seek veterinary attention immediately.
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY Penn Vet’s Emergency Service is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Call 215-746-8911 or visit Ryan Hospital at 3900 Spruce Street.
Because cats like to hide under the hoods of cars during cold weather, thump the hood a few times before entering a vehicle and turning the key.
Short-coated and smallbreed dogs should wear a sweater or coat to keep warm outside.

Holiday Tree Lighting December 1, 2016
The 2016 Annual Rittenhouse Square Tree Lighting took place
on Thursday, December 1st, 2016. Families and Friends from all over the Philadelphia area joined together in the center of Rittenhouse Square to ring in the holiday season with song and cheer. Santa Claus made a special visit to Rittenhouse Square to help our attendees count down to the lighting of the Christmas tree. The Rittenhouse Square Tree Lighting program included musical performances from the MacGuffin Theatre & Film Company’s Singin’ Bohemians, In The Mix A Cappella Group, the Greater Overbrook String Band, and the Philly POPS. Holiday speeches at the event were heard from Friends of Rittenhouse Square President, Betsy Hummel, Rittenhouse Row Founder, Corie Moscow, and our presenting sponsors from TD Bank. A special thank you to IBEW Local 98, John Dougherty, and MJK Electric for donating the tree and lights that make The Square look so inviting during the winter season. Attendees enjoyed the program while sipping on deliciously warm apple cider and hot cocoa as well as treats from local eateries. The cherries on top of the holiday sundae were the festive accessories of elf hats and reindeer antlers handed out to over 600 attendees during the event. Rittenhouse Square was truly one big community of happy holiday goers at this event and we look forward to wonderful 2017 in Rittenhouse Square Park!
A big thank you to our event participants:
In The Mix A Cappella Group

Menorah Lighting On December 27, 2016, the Rittenhouse Square community came together to celebrate the festival of lights with the lighting of the Menorah. Led by Rabbi Goldman from Center City Chabad, the community sang, lit the candles and rejoiced in the Hanukkah festivities. Among the crowd were city officials Councilman Allan Domb and the city representative for Mayor Kenney, Sheila Hess who both address the crowd with holiday spirit. Members of the community were encouraged to donate new and gently used outerwear to support the homeless this winter. The evening was uplifting and a beautiful way to come together as a community.
