FINE ARTS 2021-2022
W
elcome to the 2021-22 season of Fine Arts at Friends University! Though last year presented some challenges, we persevered and thrived. This year we are excited to have you, our audience, back with us to experience the exciting events we have planned! As a way to celebrate all that we have to offer in the Division of Fine Arts, and in the spirit of harmony, we are thrilled to share that Christmas Candlelight will look a little bit different this year. In addition to selections by the Singing Quakers and Concert Choir, there will be performances by the band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and dancers, as well as artwork in the gallery by our visual arts students. This is our big fine arts present to you. You don’t want to miss it! We are happy to announce that we have new full-time faculty joining us in the department. Dr. Nick Schroeder will be serving as Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Interim Director of Jazz, along with Ms. Donalyn Manion serving as Visiting Professor of Graphic Design and Interim Director of Visual Arts. We hope that you will join us in welcoming them to the Friends family. Famous conductor, Riccardo Muti, said, “Harmony is a shared concept. …The teaching of music is… instilling a fundamental civic principle of a participatory, respectful society. In an [ensemble] all contribute to the tonal harmony. And dissonance must be there as a moment of tension and crisis flowing into harmony.” These words express why we teach. We teach people, not art. Art is a vehicle in which we are able to connect spiritually, intellectually and artistically, in harmony, with those around us. This is why we also need you. As we draw up plans for the future of Fine Arts at Friends University, and in our greater Wichita community, we invite you to be part of our Friends Fine Arts family. We look forward to having you, our audience, with us again. Come and revel in the fine arts this season!
