Master of Science in Family Therapy You will learn… This nationally-respected Master of Science in Family Therapy degree provides the academic and clinical training you need to gain competence in the professional discipline of marriage and family therapy. This degree meets the educational requirements for licensure as a marriage and family therapist in Kansas and Missouri and most other states.
With this degree, you can… A master’s degree in marriage and family therapy allows you to work in a variety of settings. You may establish a private practice, work in psychiatric or medical hospital settings, serve church-based counseling centers, community mental health centers, military mental health services or residential treatment facilities. You will also be prepared to provide services including family preservation, foster care treatment, or adoption and reintegration. Additionally, the clinical experience you gain through your internship prepares you to provide counseling services immediately.
You will improve your skills by… This degree program is profession-focused, systemically informed, culturally sensitive and supportive of a transformative developmental trajectory inclusive of three integrative domains of marriage and family professional competency. Those domains are interpersonal competency referenced as the “self of the therapist,” theoretical competency referenced as a “life-long learner within the profession,” and clinical competency referenced as an effective practitioner continuously “meriting the public trust.” In addition to learning the theory behind therapy, you put that theory into practice through internships. Your internship will be supervised by experienced clinicians who are AAMFT-approved supervisors. Through recordings and direct observation of you in a clinical setting, your internship supervisor helps you develop and use the skills you’ll need to provide marriage and family therapy.

Please check with your Admissions Counselor for application deadlines. • Baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 GPA minimum. • Signed application and official transcripts. • Minimum prerequisite course work as follows: º one course in research methods, research design or statistics; and º two upper-division courses in any of the following areas: family studies, human development, psychology or sociology. • Completion of a personality inventory as selected by program director. • Successful completion of a background check through a vendor approved by the University. • Brief autobiography and statement of goals. • Two academic and two professional references on forms provided by the Admissions Office. • Admissions interview, approval of prerequisite courses and faculty invitation.

Where is the Master of Science in Family Therapy offered? The program is currently offered in Wichita and Kansas City with other locations coming soon. Please check with your Admissions Counselor for more details.
How many credit hours will it take to complete the degree? You will complete 60 credit hours that include a set sequence of required courses integrated with a continuous 16-month supervised clinical internship. The full program schedule is designed to be completed within a minimum of 24 months.
Is the degree accredited? Yes. The degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
Will I be required to take a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)? No. Neither test is required for entrance into graduate programs at Friends University. All graduate programs require a pre-admissions interview with the program director.
