Greetings from the 2013-2014 Topeka Alumni Advisory Board President! August is traditionally back to school time and is also the start of the 20132014 Topeka Alumni Advisory Board (AAB) year. A new board year brings changes in membership and leadership. While faces and positions change, the AAB’s commitment to promote and advance Friends University does not. My name is Sheryl Crawford and as this year's AAB President, I am especially excited about two new additions to this year’s lineup of AAB events. The first is an opportunity to connect with both students and alumni. Research has started into hosting a mixer later this fall. Be sure to watch this newsletter for more information. The second item I’m excited about is having an AAB presence at four Topeka community events. Working with the Topeka and Wichita campuses, we can begin to help Friends become the best known university in Topeka.

Other changes the AAB is working on include sharing this alumni newsletter with current students and university st aff as we hope to improve communication of our alumni events and initiatives. You’ll also notice that we have added a calendar of events to the
newsletter (see page 2). This will give our readers the opportunity to look ahead for events that are scheduled. Speaking of calendar items, you will see that the Friends University football team will be playing in Leavenworth at the University of St. Mary in November. Members of the Topeka AAB will be at that game to provide samples of our “Coffee With Friends.” Anyone who attends will also be registered to win one of two bags of the coffee. (Just a reminder that the coffee is available for purchase at www.justlovecoffee.com/ friendsuniversity.) I hope you will join us at the event and stay to support the Falcons. Other tasks that the board will be working on this year include changes to the student scholarship program, visiting graduating classes, serving chili, offering Friends’ merchandise at bookstore nights, and conducting a service project. Last but not least, located in the lefthand column is a “Contact Us” link. I would enjoy reading your thoughts, comments, and ideas about our alumni activities. I am excited to be a part of this year’s AAB and am expecting a great year for our alumni and students alike!

We want to know!
Earlier this month, we asked our Topeka alumni to participate in a survey regarding the interest of a monthly bookstore night. Thanks to everyone who had an opportunity to respond—we received approximately 60 responses overall. Special congratulations to Justin Ramsdell, ‘11, who was randomly selected to win a Friends University t-shirt!
Based on the feedback that was provided, the Topeka Alumni Advisory Board will be conducting these bookstore nights one night a month and dates will be included in this monthly newsletter as well as via email blasts. All donations received will benefit the Topeka student scholarship fund.
Upcoming Calendar of Events Be sure to mark your calendar for these upcoming Friends University events:

This Month’s Trivia Question Each newsletter, we ask a trivia question and give away a prize to one lucky person. Congratulations to our July winner, Gloria Horn, ’11. They knew that the 2013 graduation exercises for Topeka students were held at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

For this month’s trivia question, we want to know the date of the Falcon football game against the University of St. Mary. We will place the name of EVERYONE who submits a correct response to alumni@friends.edu in a drawing to win a Friends University Nike Dry-Fit T-Shirt. One lucky winner will be drawn no later than September 12, 2013. Good luck!
