IN A WORLD where big brands have something
new every week, we stick with our small lineup of high-quality bags for years. We rotate colors in and out on occasion, and introduce a new bag only when it truly serves a different need. Your top request is a cross-body bag, and I’ve been weighing what I want and need and can’t find. Obviously it had to be all-natural and highly functional (flat bottom, lots of pockets, comfortable to carry), but also not too heavy on its own, roomy but not huge, gender neutral, and of course, distinctive. For inspiration I turned to my personal favorite of our bags, the Porter Bin. I love what a stalwart helper it is, and how its unassuming handles stay out of the way except when needed. So I imagined a cross-body version. I made it taller and adjusted the signature interior pockets proportionally. Added a flat pocket on the outer back plus a large, gusseted front pocket into which we inserted another tool pocket. Both outer pockets and the top got heavy-duty brass snaps. Then we gave it an adjustable shoulder strap so you can wear it cross-body or as a cool, slouchy shoulder bag, plus it still has those handy Porter Bin handles. It’s sewn right here in Nashville, in the endlessly versatile toffee color — that classic workwear favorite —and it’s called the Rambler. Bonus: Having the canvas and webbing made in this weight and color meant we could finally offer the Porter Bin in toffee, too! The four of us have been field testing the Rambler for months, and our newsletter subscribers got the first shot at it last month. The response has been amazing, and today it’s available to everyone! There’s a limit to how many we can produce for the holidays, though, so it’s only at fringesupplyco.com and quantities are limited! I design our bags to meet assorted needs with different sizes and feature sets, but to work with each other to create just the right system for you.
