WELCOME.. to the second annual (!) Fringe

Theatre Event - nine more days of colour and cultural chaos i n the heart o f

Edmonton's historic O l d Strathcona district. Last suiiirrier the Fringe featured 45 shows i n 225 performances - a n d sold nearly 8,000 tickets...this year the RETURN

welcomes 65 shows (at last count) and over 300 {jerforrnances! A n d what a

selection - there are new plays, exciting versions of old favourites, music a n d musicals galore, international puppets, m i m e , masks, dance a n d a w i l d array of spontaneous street entertainment. There are more p e r f o r m i n g spaces too - late-night venues and several tents. Something for just about everybody! A few important things to note before you begin to indulge yourself: *

I t ' s the same set-up as last year - all tickets are sold at the door ( N O A D V A N C E S A L E S ) a n d all ticket revenue goes direcdy to the artists themselves...but T H E R E W I L L B E A 50c S U R C H A R G E P E R T I C K E T W H I C H W I L L BE C O L L E C T E D B Y V O L U N T E E R S A T E A C H T H E A T R E . Chinook Theatre Firehall #6 was built i n the 1950's. T h e b u i l d i n g was vacated less t h a n a m o n t h ago when the C i t y ' s Fire Department moved to their new southside headquarters o n 96th Street j u s t south of the M i l l Creek bridge. Chinook Theatre now leases the b u i l d i n g f r o m the O l d Strathcona Foundation and plans to convert i t into a 150 seat theatre w i t h supporting administrative and workshop facilities. As well as providing a base for Chinook's highly successful provincial t o u r i n g programme and the gradual development of our o w n in-house presentations for y o u n g people, we w i l l be opening the theatre for use by a wide variety of performing artists. I t is our intent to provide a comfortable, technical efficient venue at a reasonable rent so that even the smallest production can receive a first class presentation! Fund-raising is well underway (all donations welcome!) and designs are being developed. W e hope to open Edmonton's newest theatre late this year or early i n 1984. A d d y o u r name to the m a i l i n g list i n the lobby and w e ' l l keep y o u informed of our progress.
