WELCOME TO YOUR VERY OWN FRINGE FESTIVAL You’ve got over 150 shows to choose from, brought to you by over 800 local and visiting artists from across the world of Fringe.
There’s a smorgasbord of choice on offer and you’re bound to find something that’ll tickle your taste buds. Whether you’re a die-hard Fringe dweller or new to the delights of Fringe, we invite you, your friends and your family to pop in to the Fringe and enjoy. For those looking to go on a Fringe Binge, tickets range from as little as $5 per show, there’s nothing over $40, shows run back to back across different venues till the wee hours, and they’re all within about ten minutes walk of each other around the City of Perth. Make the most of your Fringe night out and see a range of shows in the one hit, or make the pleasures last as you keep coming back over three and a half jam-packed weeks. Some of the most popular ticketed shows from our 2011 Spiegeltent pilot season sold out before opening night. We encourage you to get in quick on the bookings to avoid disappointment. That being said, there’s nothing more Fringe than meeting your friends after work, dropping into a Fringe hub with no set plans and just seeing where it takes you. There’ll be Rushtix available each night of the festival from your friendly box-office caravans if you’re taking the spontaneous approach to your Fringe choose-your-own-adventure. One thing we want to point out about Fringe, it’s a little bit different, and we’re not just talking about the more outrageous and out-there works. Fringe is open access, which means anyone can have a go and put something on in the festival. Democracy! We don’t have people selecting shows for our festival. It’s the artists that have chosen to give us a go and be part of Perth’s first full Fringe. Some of them are home-grown creative heroes. Some of them are world famous superstars. Some of them are just starting out. Some of them have come a long way to show you their stuff. They come from all walks, but they all share their dedication, passion, talent, and reliance on you, the good people of Perth, to make all their efforts worth it. They’re putting a lot on the line, and a lot out there. If you don’t see their show, they don’t get any money and they can’t buy $5 coffees. Is this a guilt trip? Yes it is. We’ll go to any lengths to persuade you to see as much as you can during Fringe because we think these artists are amazing, we know you’ll love their stuff, they’re doing it for you and they’ve made their prices dirt cheap, so we think you should give as many of them a go as possible! See something at random that you wouldn’t normally go for. Experience three shows a night for five nights running. Choose at least one show from every genre over the festival. Gather all your friends and go Fringe crazy. Fringe Binge with Fervour! You won’t be disappointed. With sincerity, Your ever faithful FRINGE WORLD, Perth

FRINGE WORLD Freebies features a nightly array of cabaret, circus, DJs, burlesque and live music happening at our two outdoor Fringe hubs, The Orchard in the Perth Cultural Centre and The Treasure Chest between the Perth Town Hall and The Treasury buildings in the CBD.
The Treasure Chest is a new Fringe hub, it’s not the first time we’ve pitched our tent in The Orchard however. It was where we introduced Perth to the pleasures of The Spiegeltent for the first time, and was one of the most talked about parts of our pilot season earlier in 2011. Free entertainments under the stars in the beautiful surrounds of the Urban Orchard. The Perth city skyline to one side, the Art Gallery of WA on another, our very own Spiegeltent to the back, illuminated by the light of the State Theatre Centre. It doesn’t get better than that. It’s simply the nicest place to enjoy balmy outdoor evenings this summer.
We’re back in the Cultural Centre in 2012 with some of our favourite institutions jumping on the Fringe bus for the ride.
Alongside back-to-back shows each night in The Spiegeltent, there are free daily programs at the State Library of WA, Fringe shows in the State Theatre Centre, the Art Gallery of WA, and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts. There’s a program of nightly screenings on the PCC Screen, a killer ‘Summer Nights’ program put together by The Blue Room Theatre and a range of other pop-up performances happening over the festival around The Orchard, and on its outdoor stage. Peruse the notice boards at the FRINGE WORLD Pop-Up Caravans and visit www.fringeworld.com.au to see what’s on the line-up each night. Pop on in and take a bite...
7 For the first time in over 15 years, the historic OLD Treasury Buildings next door to the perth town hall, st georges cathedral and council house will open their doors to the public this fringe.
A free FRINGE outdoor performance area built into a hidden vacant lot in the heart of THE CITY WHERE IN 1829 PERTH WAS OFFICIALLY FOUNDED BY THE FELLING OF A TREE.
Designed by GT Poole and RR Jewell, The Old Treasury Buildings are celebrated as some of Australia’s finest surviving examples of free classical style architecture.
From The Treasure Chest you can access nine different performance spaces in the neighbouring Perth Town Hall and The Treasury to see consecutive shows each night of the festival.
They contained Perth’s first General Post Office (1889) and Western Australia’s original Treasury Department (1874), Lands Department (1893), and Titles Office (1897).
You can also just pop in and enjoy the spectacle for free.
After over a century of public service the buildings became vacant in 1996 and have since remained dormant, until now.
It’s all about mystery and hidden treasures after all.
FRINGE WORLD has been granted a once only use of The Treasury before the buildings and surrounding precinct are permanently transformed.
We’re not letting too much out of the bag on this one.
We confirm that Bob Log III (p38) will be performing in The Treasure Chest for free on Sat 28 Jan. We confirm that there’ll be mermaids performing in an underwater tank each night, including a special guest appearance by Julie Atlas Muz (p19).
A world-class redevelopment gets rolling in 2012 post FRINGE WORLD involving the State Government, the City of Perth, the Public Trustee, Perth’s Anglican diocese and developers FJM, Mirvac and CBUS Property.
We confirm there will be many other strange and surprising delights each night....
Enjoy the charms of this grande old dame of WA history one last time before her total makeover commences.
Peruse the notice boards at the FRINGE WORLD Pop-Up Caravans and visit www. fringeworld.com.au to see what’s on the line-up.
Visiting the various temporary performance spaces in The Treasury including the vaulted central postal hall will be a journey of discovery in its own right.

CITY OF PERTH
Fringe is putting some laughs back into Perth’s entertainment precinct this February with the City of Perth Comedy Central program.
Free Fringe comedy on the Northbridge Piazza Stage & Screen alongside affordable ticketed shows in venues throughout the precinct will make James and Lake Streets the destination for guaranteed belly laughs and good times during the Fringe in 2012. The Freebie Fringe Funnies are happening on the Northbridge Piazza Stage & Screen from 6pm to 8pm (p49) Thursday to Sunday over the festival starting with the Fringe Funnies Comedy Concert on Thu 2 Feb at 6pm. Come along and see local, national and international comedians perform, enjoy funny short films on the Piazza Screen and catch sneak peeks of the Comedy Central Acts before they hit their venues in the precinct for their ticketed shows later in the night. The free comedy is designed to be funny for the full family, so it’s a great time to bring the kids in for a laugh and a bite to eat. Check the Comedy Central page at www.fringeworld.com.au and programs posted on www.showmeperth.com.au to see the line-up each night across the Fringe.
Here at FRINGE WORLD we’ve fallen in love with vintage caravans.
When we say vintage, we mean the Golden Age of caravan design, late 50’s to early 70’s – the kind of caravan that makes you think of sea-side holidays and summer good times. We’ve been collecting some beauties and bringing them back from the brink with some help from our friends at George Day Caravans. So what are we doing with them all? We’re glad you asked. We’re making Pop-Up’s from them… Pop-Up Box-Offices, Pop-Up Bars for our free outdoor festival sites even a Pop-Up & PopDown Stage where free performances from Fringe artists will be happening in unusual places throughout the city and further afield. Check the maps for the location of where PopUp Caravan Box Offices are permanently situated throughout the Fringe. Check the ‘Fringe Pop-Up Caravan Locations’ page at www.fringeworld.com.au and keep your eyes on the FRINGE WORLD Facebook for updates on where the roaming caravans will be in the lead up to and during the Fringe. They’ll be popping up in some surprising places!

If you haven’t experienced The Spiegeltent yet, you’re in for a treat. Named ‘De Parel Van Vuren’, which translates from Dutch as ‘The Pearl of Fire’, this travelling venue was built in 1905 and has been used through the 20th century as a dance hall, bar and entertainment salon. The name ‘Spiegeltent’ is Dutch for ‘mirror tent’ due to the hand made ‘architecture’ of wood, mirrors, canvas and leaded glass, with detailing in velvet and brocade.
In an unprecedented move and with the generous assistance of Lotterywest, the producers of FRINGE WORLD negotiated the purchase of ‘The Pearl’, one of the few remaining Spiegeltents in the world, direct from its historical custodians, the Belgian Klessens family who have toured their Spiegeltents for five generations. ‘The Pearl’ has housed thousands of artists, audiences and exotic gatherings, the very essence of a festival club, ‘kabaret salon’ and intimate concert hall. Throughout history, iconic performers such as Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin and Gypsy Rose Lee have performed inside Spiegeltents. Like every old theatre, her ghosts travel with her, woven into ballooning velvet canopies, circular teak dance floor and stained, cut-glass windows. Her intimate booths, ornate bar and bevelled mirror columns hold a million secrets while her chandelier, or sometimes her trapeze rig, swings overhead. ‘The Pearl’ is set to become a living legend in Western Australia and a significant feature at cultural events throughout the state in the future. Our very own Spiegeltent will house some incredible talent during FRINGE WORLD and beyond, but don’t be fooled – she is a star in her own right. Seeing is believing.

Feelings of living in a huge city were gathered with emotional aspects of the contemporary times. The combination of fear frequently expressed as a physical symptom of panic and anxiety attacks were used as a base for this performance and soundtrack including objects investigation, expressive gesture, unsteadiness and fragmentation of movements.
Amongst a flurry of teabags and trifles, Unkempt Dance explores the rituals and bizarre elaborations of the humble cuppa. Offbeat and engaging with a flair for the unusual, this physical, theatrical dance is sure to please. Bag a seat, unwind and infuse. The kettle’s boiling; how do you take yours?

THE ORB & BOMB THE BASS
THE PROM
Founded during the rise of acid house and the explosion of rave during ‘The Second Summer of Love’ in 1988,The Orb not only pioneered, but invented the genre of ambient house. The Orb’s centrifugal epicentre Dr Alex Paterson, purveyor of hook-ridden songs laden with memorable samples has been delivering auditory bliss-bombs ever since. Little Fluffy Clouds. Bomb the Bass are equally seminal in the history of dance music and DJ culture. Tim Simenon introduced the mainstream to sampling culture with ‘Beat Dis’ in 1987, and he’s been producing progressive analogue electronic dance ever since with the last album, Back to Light (2010) embodying a more minimal, stripped back approach.
Presented by Bourgeois Bogan. Three years in the waiting, a night so notorious it’s transformed into mythic proportions. As the time nears, a collective rumble emerges from the social abyss as they once again ask... Do you have a date for the Prom?

CELEBRATING A DECADE WITH WESTERN POWER
PERTHNOW PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
Fringe World is an Artrage Production and we couldn’t do it without one of our longest and strongest supporters.
There are Fringe World Awards for each genre category with winning works selected by a secret panel. There’s one award that’s decided by the audiences.
Since 2002, Western Power and Artrage’s partnership has been enjoyed directly by more than one million Western Australians and visitors to our great state. In 2007 the partnership was awarded the ‘Most outstanding long term partnership’ at the WA Business and Arts awards. Five years later, we’re celebrating a decade of working together and the birth of Perth’s first full Fringe World Festival. The story of the partnership is one of growth and innovation since inception. In 2002, Western Power provided Artrage with a much needed home, an empty building owned by Western Power on James Street in Northbridge.
Show some love to your favourite Fringe World artists by voting for their show in the Perthnow People’s Choice Award. Voting opens Australia Day 26 January and closes on 18 February with the winner announced at the Fringe World Awards ceremony on 19 February (p33). Visit perthnow.com.au to cast your vote.
CHARITY LINK FRINGE FANS
THE MARTIN SIMS AWARD
Help us to pass on the good vibes and add your generosity to the spirit of the Fringe in 2012 by giving to our favourite local charity. Charity Link coordinates for more than 120 organisations across WA providing food and toys to families and individuals who would otherwise go without. They are another NFP that receives support from Western Power, and we know how hard their staff and volunteers work because we share a warehouse and we see first hand the huge amounts of goods they distribute to those in need across the state each year. During the 2012 Fringe World Festival, audiences can contribute to the Western Power Charity Link Appeal by purchasing a Fringe World Fan from one of our Pop-Up Caravans. They’re a great Fringe souvenir, they’re useful, and all proceeds go to Charity Link. You can also donate to Charity Link when you purchase your Fringe tickets online.
Western Power Managing Director Doug Aberle announced at the close of the inaugural Fringe World Summit in 2011 that the Martin Sims Award will be an annual award given to the most promising Western Australian work in the Fringe.
JOIN US!
Ten years later, The Bakery is firmly cemented in the local arts and live music scene as one of the most popular places for new arts and entertainment year round. Western Power also provides Artrage with admin offices and a production warehouse in the same block as The Bakery. The provision of these spaces have been the backbone which has allowed the organisation to grow the scale and impact of its programs over the last decade, leading to the launch of the Fringe World Festival in 2012.
It’s the Fringe’s top-tier prize, giving the winning artists access to $10,000 to tour their work to other national and international Fringe Festivals. It’s the kind of creative career building opportunity for local artists that the man who the award is named after would have celebrated. Martin Sims passed away in 2010, and the award honours his contributions to the community. He was a Western Power employee for twenty-two years, an Artrage Chair for three years, and a life-long advocate for the arts in WA. As the Chair of Artrage, Martin played a central role in establishing the partnership between Artrage and Western Power that has come to mean so much, for so many Western Australian artists and audiences. In the words of Doug Aberle at the announcement of the award, “Martin was committed to building community and held a strong belief that art can provide a link between youth and adulthood. He was drawn to the arts believing it was where ideas and culture collided. His time as Chair set the bedrock for a decade of growth and transformation for Artrage, ultimately leading to the successful launch of the Fringe World Festival. Martin would have loved the idea of this award – he loved fringe artists and the idea of a local artist or company having the opportunity to showcase their work on the world stage of fringe would make him smile. The award is in honour of our friend, pioneer of the arts and former valued Western Power employee.”
We’d love you to be a part of next year’s Fringe. It’s an open access festival, so there are ways that all and any can put on a show or event. If you’re a local, national or international artist or company, a community group or organisation, venue or cultural facility and/or interested party that thinks you might like to take part in the festival, we’d really like to hear from you. With Fringe World Perth dove-tailing with the Adelaide Fringe, we’ve established a touring circuit that can make an artist’s visit to Australia all the more worthwhile. Fringe World 2013 registration information will be up at www.fringeworld.com.au soon. In the meantime, if you have an idea, query, point of interest or some feedback you’d like to provide, then email info@fringeworld.com.au with Fringe World 2013 in the subject heading and we’ll get back to you. Make sure you sign up to our e-news to stay abreast with the latest news as it goes live. Partnerships 2013. If you’re interested in finding out about partnership opportunities available for 2013, email info@fringeworld.com.au with Partnerships 2013 in the subject heading pronto and we’ll see if we can get you along to one of our special VIP functions happening during the 2012 Fringe World Festival so you can get a taste. Enjoy Fringe World 2012. Think large, creative, generous and bright for Fringe World 2013!
In 2012 we’re celebrating a decade of working together and Perth’s first full FRINGE WORLD Festival
