ONE Inspired Celebrations for the Home Entertainer SUMMER 2012

editor’s note I admit it: I’m a party addict. I just love cruising blogs and magazines, losing myself in the photos of everything from impressive large-scale props to those tiny details that pull it all together. Seeing the intricate work that people put into creating amazing celebrations makes me feel excited, ambitious, inspired...and sometimes overwhelmed. That feeling, that How-Could-I-Ever-Find-The-Time sensation, is what inspired Festivities magazine. Sure, those grand parties are amazing, but we don’t always have the time, budget, or ability to pull it off. That’s why, in our magazine, we not only show you the over-the-top, high-effort parties, but we’ll also show you the same party, scaled down. A low-effort version, to show you how easy it is to shrink projects and budgets, and still create fabulous affairs. When I was photographing the Balloons party for this issue, I was wrapped up in creating an amazing balloon obstacle course for the children. Floating tunnels, balloon caves, a forest of balloons—this was going to be a magical experience for those little three year olds! And they did like it. But you know what they liked even better? Popping all the balloons. Sure, it can be fun to get wrapped up in the details and crafts and making spectacular memories. But the simple joys and experiences are just as valuable. We hope you get inspiration from our magazine. We certainly hope you “ooh” and “aah” over the photos, and that you’ll find yourself motivated and feeling more creative than ever. But most of all, we hope to show you that you can create incredible parties, no matter how much you want to put into it. Inspiration from the high-effort designs. The Superstition mountains to the east of Phoenix, Arizona, are home to beautiful desert vistas, state parks, hiking trails, remarkable native wildlife... and a mystery. The legend of the Lost Dutchman’s Mine is one often told around campfires, the story of German immigrant Jacob Waltz and his secret, rich gold mine in Apache lands. The concealed location of the mine was lost on Waltz’ deathbed, so the story goes, when Gold rush he only had time to sketch history out a tantalizingly crude inspired the map showing the mine’s entire party location before drawing from the his last breath. Thousands decor to the have searched for the Lost Dutchman’s Mine food since the late 1800s, but nobody has ever found it, prompting speculators to believe that gold is still out there, just waiting to be found. Lost treasure and mystery: the inspiration for countless campfire tales, and one fun family BBQ with a historical twist. FESTIVITIES BY TIKKIDO.COM AND FROG PRINCE PAPERIE SUMMER 2012

The desserts were all inspired by classic Americana and the old west surroundings.Homemade apple pie; blueberry muffins; snickerdoodle blondies; golden nuggets (rock candy); western themed sugar cookies; and s’mores made

with homemade graham crackers, homemade marshmallows, and high quality chocolate. Regular s’mores are delicious, but s’mores made with homemade marshmallows and crackers are sandwiches of gooey, melty, smoky heaven.

Yeeeeeehaw. You know these cowgirls were having the best time ever. How could you not wearing pink boots?

Gold rush history inspired the entire party, from the dĂŠcor to the food. Classic denim was a natural choice for a fabric accent, since it became popular when Levi Strauss invented blue jeans in 1853 when he wanted to create rugged pants that would stand up to the rigors of gold mining. Dinner was classic,portable picnic fare, perfect for a venture into Lost Dutchman State Park. Hot dogs roasted over the campfire, homemade chips, individual tamale pies, and coleslaw. When cooking dinner is an activity, it makes the party all the more fun, and the burden lighter for the host. When packing a food like coleslaw for a picnic, use individually portioned deli containers, available at restaurant supply stores or even your local deli counter. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s much easier to hand each person his or her own container than to remember serving utensils and trying to portion out the food on site. The individual containers are fun to decorate, too!

ALCHEMY 101: Turning Sugar into Gold

You know what’s always insanely popular on a dessert table? Sugar, in its purest form. Rock candy. Available in a wonderful rainbow of colors and variety of sizes, on sticks or on strings, it’s a fabulous addition to just about any theme. But for the gold-rush inspiration of the western BBQ party, plain rock candy just wouldn’t do. Those nuggets of sugary delight needed a distinctly more luxurious hue than can be bought at the local candy store..

Materials: Rock candy crystals (preferably on strings) Gold luster dust spray Gold luster dust and a dry, clean paintbrush (optional)

Step 1) Set the rock candy on a baking sheet or piece of waxed paper to protect the table from getting gilded. Spray with the gold luster dust spray, remembering to turn the crystals over to coat the underside of each candy. Wilton brand was used in this example, and is widely available in craft store.

Step 2) The rock candy nuggets may already be golden enough for your taste at this stage, particularly if you start with yellow rock candy. I wanted a more intense gold for my treats, so I pulled out the gold luster dust. Simply dust the shimmering, edible, golden powder on the rock crystals using a dry, clean, dedicated paintbrush.

The luster dust sticks magnificently if it is applied right after the luster dust spray, which dampens the surface of the crystals slightly.

All are words used to describe Kate Landers and her events. Based out of Boston, Massachusetts, Kate’s special brand of style has been seen in New England and worldwide for over 3 years. Her clientele love her creative take on popular themes such as little mermaids and trains and are captivated by her unique themes like Huckleberry Finn and silhouettes among many others. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to catch up with Kate recently to gain some insight on her sparking career in party planning and get a few tips on making parties stellar for the home planner.

FESTIVITIES: Congratulations on you new little

one, Kate! We all look forward to seeing what you do to celebrate his milestones in life. You began planning children’s events long before you had a child of your own—what spurred you to start your own children’s event planning company?

KATE: Thank you Nicole and Paula! Our precious Noah had a helmet debut party for his plagiocephaly at the age of 2 months, and right now I am working on his baptism/baby dedication luncheon taking place in May. I must admit: I am already thinking about his first birthday next fall (and helmet coming-off party, too!). It was friends and family who encouraged me

to dive into starting an event planning business after attending one of my personal events. They helped me dive right in by requesting I donate children’s parties for their child’s pre-school fundraisers. I took advantage of this great opportunity to see if I would really like children’s event planning as a career…obviously, I did! When I started my business, it was the perfect culmination of my business degree and passion for entrepreneurship; my love of children (I was a nanny and babysat for over a decade); my love of theater/ballet/art; and my passion for parties. What many now may not know is that I actually started with my own line of children’s party products in a little online boutique—I wanted to offer items (such as one-of-a-kind party hats and European children’s tableware you simply couldn’t get anywhere else in the US) to coordi-

nate with my events. Being a one-woman show for the most part, I realized I had to shift my focus on event or product design—not both. I chose event design, and was thrilled. However, life has a wonderful way of working out. I was contacted by a well-established company offering their own line of children’s party products, tableware, room décor and gifts, to design for them an exclusive line of children’s party products. Not having to be in charge of the physical shipments of the products and doing what I love most—designing—has been a true blessing.

FESTIVITIES: Constantly designing parties of quality takes some creative power. Where do you draw inspiration from for your creations?

What I have learned is that with a little imagination, you can design a party based on almost anything your heart desires.

our readers at home planning their own doit-yourself celebrations, what three things do you see as essential to holding a successful event?

KATE: Wow, that’s a tough one, as the definition

of “success” might vary. If I base that definition of a successful party in terms of achieving a classic and elegant look, minimal stress and overstimulation, as well as an imaginative experience for the guests (transporting them to the pages of their favorite storybook for the duration of the party), then I would recommend the following:

If you are doing a theme based off of your child’s favorite storybook or movie, it can be overwhelming trying to re-create the entire tale! I suggest pulling out a particular character or scene, and bringing that to life. This can give you more focus, give your party a more cohesive-stylish look (not to mention more affordable), and most importantly allow your guests to have a magical experience.

can take several hours if not days (especially if you are doing it alone) to set up. Rarely does a rental space give you that much time, and when you are pressed for time it is a less-enjoyable experience and can be a recipe for disaster.

I am a believer that keeping the guest list small (the age of the child, plus or minus two guests) is extremely helpful in minimizing meltdowns and overstimulation of the children (not to mention stress for the parents!). Whenever possible, I follow this rule—and also make sure that any planned activities are age appropriate. (Note: what a 3 year old can do and 5 year old can do are quite different, so plan activities that all guests can enjoy—or separate activities if you have different age groups in attendance).

KATE: Well I actually got it—being a mommy!

KATE: I believe floor-length table linens and white tableware are essential investments for a lovely celebration. Also, use of beautiful pieces of furniture, chandeliers and home accessories can give you a beautiful elegant look, often without having to go outside your own home!

Host your party at home, if you can. I say this because often dessert tables, activity table setup, buffets and elaborate backdrops and props

for most of us...

the thrill of popscicles fades away with childhood. As adults, those lurid sticks of frozen artificial flavors hold little appeal. But paletas. Paletas are not popsicles. Oh sure, they might be made with the same molds. You might recognize the characteristic stick (paleo in Spanish) in these frozen confections. But with their exquisite, vibrant, fresh flavors, and a mom-and-pop tradition of artisan craftmanship and only the best ingredients, paletas are something truly special. Paletas are Mexico’s version of the classic summer treat, the popsicle. The treat has its origins in the state of Michoacán, a sugarcane producing region in the southwest of Mexico. Since the 1930s, paletas have become extraordinarily popular south of the border, with paleterias in every town, no matter how small, and thousands in the larger cities. In the United States, we’ve been slower to catch on to the simple beauty of pure ingredients and bright flavors of the paleta. But we’re learning, and the market is growing.

Take the success of American paleterias like Paletas Betty, in Chandler, Arizona. Owner Betty Alatorre de Hong, who hails from Michoacán, serves up paletas with traditional flavors, some truly unique and modern ones, and an exceptional attention to detail and quality. Her paletas are inspired by her childhood—Alatorre de Hong strives to share with the world “the perfect paleta I have in my mind, the way I remember it growing up.” To Alatorre de Hong, that perfect paleta means using only the very finest ingredients, and creating all of her own unique recipes. “Simplicity is what makes a great paleta, and what makes them different from popsicles. The big manufacturers...cut corners, use artificial ingredients and add stabilizers. I don’t like that.” Using only the freshest, in-season ingredients is a priority to Alatorre de Hong, and everything is made completely from scratch. Even her popsicle sticks are hand-stamped. Her Key Lime Pie paleta features a creamy, tangy, bright lime center, and is covered with a generous coating of graham crackers. But not just any graham crackers—these crumbs were made from homemade graham crackers that Betty bakes herself. The Arroz con Leche paleta is based on her mother’s recipe for rice pudding. Chocolate—sounds so simple, doesn’t it?--is truly something special, inspired by her grandmother’s spiced Mexican hot chocolate recipe. She roasts and grinds her own chile powder for the Mango con Chile bar. The paletas at Paletas Betty are made with special custom molds—molds with a bite taken out of each treat, cast from Alatorre de Hong’s own teeth. When developing her business, she loved the idea of taking a bite of a paleta and thinking it so incredibly delicious that it has to be shared. “Here, taste this, you won’t believe how good it is!” Betty wants to share her paletas with the world, and world should take note and accept the gift. Because these are no mere popsicles, my friend. These are paletas, and deserve a place of honor in your freezer.

peanut butter and jelly gets center stage at playdate time PHOTOGRAPHY AND STYLING BY PAULA BIGGS OF FROG PRINCE PAPERIE Kids and peanut butter and jelly are natural bossum buddies. So when I suggested a playdate based around their favorite anytime food, there were cheers all around! We made peanut butter treats of all shapes and sizes from peanut butter pie pops to peanut butter cups. But the entire inspiration for this party came from a cakepan--one shaped like a giant piece of bread that was perfect for decorating to look like a big peanut butter sandwich. Tall glasses of milk were served to wash down all the peanut butter that was consumed. Out of cute little milk bottles with paper straws, of course.

Getting active. The playdate was for a gaggle of three-year-olds, so we didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plan any structured activities aside from making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and singing the extremely catchy peanut butter and jelly song. The free play among the hanging balloon grapes and streamers blowing in the breeze was plenty to keep the children occupied! Peanut Butter Pie Pops are a quick and easy party addition when you use a roll pie-crust. Cut circles out of the pie crust, dab a half teaspoon each of peanut butter and jelly in the middle of two circles and press the edges closed with a fork. Add a stick for added fun! Homemade Peanut Butter At home, it’s generally my mantra that food tastes better when it’s homemade and doesn’t come out of a box or jar. Peanut butter is another one of things that falls into that category...but only when there is time to make it. Luckily, rich creamy peanut butter is at your fingertips if you have a blender handy. You’ll want to shell the peanuts yourself as well, as the jarred roasted peanut flavor is a bit strong in this recipe. One pound shelled peanuts Salt to taste (about a teaspoon) 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon peanut oil Put the peanuts, salt and honey into the blender and puree for a minute or two. Drizzle the oil into the blender while running and process until smooth. Keep in an airtight containter in the refridgerator.

streamer chandeliers There was a period of about three months this spring where I developed an obsession with streamer chandeliers, and for good reason. They take up a great amount of visual space and they cost about $3 to make. And hung in groups, they are simply amazing as a party element. Since getting the most impact for my party dollar is always my goal, I used these in several parties and photo shoots just to be sure. And they were spectacular every time! All you need is: • Large wooden embroidery hoop • Crepe paper streamers • Double sided tape

Step 1. Cut your streamers to the desired length, about 24 per hoop. I have very high ceilings, so my strips were 8 feet long. Step 2. Place a 3 or 4 inch piece of double-sided tape on the inside of the embroidery hoop. Step 3. Place the end of a length of streamer with about an inch sticking over the top to the outside of the hoop where the double sided tape is. Fold the extra streamer length over top of the hoop and press to stick to the double sided tape. Step 4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, overlapping the streamers slightly to fully cover the hoop. tt The best results in the several sets I made were when there were two colors of streamer, and the colors were placed four of the same color streamers in a row.

Nothing says summer like a light and airy bite of strawberry shortcake. These cupcakes are what I’d call “delicate beauties” that capture that summer feeling, but they need to be devoured quickly lest they wilt in the heat. They’ll keep, if chilled, for a couple days after assembly. You can also make the components and chill them until ready to serve.

INGREDIENTS Vanilla Cupcakes Whipped Cream Frosting 2 quarts strawberries, hulled [reserve the 12 smallest & prettiest and slice the rest] 1/2 cup sugar, or more to taste 2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 Tbsp fresh mint, finely minced (optional) 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 Tbsp Kirsch (optional but highly recommended) Toss strawberries several times in a bowl with sugar, lemon juice, mint, vanilla, and Kirsch (if using) until very syrupy and set aside. Make whipped cream frosting (see below). Use a paring knife to

cut a shallow cone in the middle top of the cupcake. Spoon some strawberries with syrup over top, allowing it to absorb into cupcakes. Top each with a dollop of cream frosting and a strawberry half. Enjoy! Vanilla Cupcakes Adapted from Amy Sedaris 3/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 large eggs, room temperature 2 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1 1/4 cup milk Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease the tops of 2 standard muffin tins, then line with 24 paper liners. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, bak-

ing powder, and salt. Set aside. In a different larger bowl, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs and mix until combined into the batter. Then add the vanilla and mix again. Finally alternately beat in dry ingredients and milk. Fill liners until they are about 2/3 full (I like to use my large cookie scoop for this). Bake for 16 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely.

Whisk at medium-high speed until light and fluffy, 1 to 2 minutes, scraping down bowl with rubber spatula as needed. A leafy cave formed by a single grapefruit tree formed the perfect spot for this intimate, oh-so-sweet brunch tea party. Dappled sunlight streamed through, shielding the guests from the summer sun, and casting the entire celebration in a soft glow that made the whole affair seem even more magical. A palette of delicate pinks and greens; damask patterns; and lacy, light floral embellishments made everything at the party come together in a way sure to tickle girls young and old. Whimsy and elegance was the goal. To that end, no paper plates or cups were to be found. Real china, real silverware, real crystal punch glasses made the event truly special, something set apart from an average childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s party. Edible Enticements Quality food always makes a big impression, and for this mid-morning tea party, that meant classic brunch fare done well. Homemade cinnamon rolls, individual sized spinach quiches, homemade scones and strawberry jam, prosciutto wrapped asparagus, damaskembellished chocolate covered Oreos, and vanilla puff pastries tempted children and grown-ups alike. And the crowning touch on the brunch display was a magnificent crepe cake. Twenty-five layers of crepes, slathered with alternating fillings of homemade lemon curd and vanilla pastry cream, graced with a dusting of powdered sugar and a single gumpaste flower. A feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds.

Layers of Summer Summer always conjures thoughts of warm afternoons and cool lemonade. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what inspired the homemade lemon curd filling for the crepe cake. To temper the tangy filling, it was alternated with a classic vanilla pastry cream. The end result: a perfect balance of sweet and tart, just right for a brunch party.

You know what’s cute? Stripey vintage paper straws. You know what’s even cuter? Adding printable straw tags just perfect for your party. Yeah, you already knew all that. But really, why stop there? A few inexpensive silk flowers, a few crystals, a dab of glue, and suddenly, your already-darn-adorable straws are even more spectacular.

You’ll Need: • • • • •

Vintage paper straws Printable straw flags Inexpensive, small silk flowers 8mm Swarovski round crystal beads Hot glue gun

Step 1. Use a low temperature hot glue gun to attach the straw flags to the paper straws. If using plastic straws instead of paper straws, use regular glue, so the hot glue won’t melt holes in the straws, rendering them useless. Step 2. Remove the silk flowers (available at any craft store) from the plastic stems and stamens to which they come attached. Glue a flower where the flag meets the straw. Step 3. Glue a Swarovski crystal in the center of each flower. (Any bead may be substituted, of course—even fun elements like buttons or pebbles—but Swarovski sure does add a gorgeous sparkle!)

For parents throwing their first big children’s party, the list of questions about etiquette can be huge. Natalie routinely works with parents and gives them a little guidance Emily Post-style. Deciding how many guests to invite is a classic challenge for a children’s birthday party. I use the traditional rule of one guest per age. If your child is turning 8 they can invite 8 guests. If you would like to invite more children, ask that their parents attend the party. Who should be invited? Create the list including your close friends and family first. Then consult with your child about the remaining list. Your child will undoubtedly have one or two favorite friends that simply must be on the guest list. It is not necessary to invite your child’s entire class to his or her birthday party. That said, it would be wrong to invite everyone and exclude just one or two children. Try to keep the classmate list to the kids that your child actually plays

with during the day. And be sure to mail the invitations to the guests’ homes instead of having your child hand them out at school. Some schools require that all classmates be invited if the invitation is handed out in class.

show up expecting to eat. Afternoon and into the evening is ideal for older children. Slumber parties are a great idea to introduce at this age. How long should the party last? For younger children, a party that last two hours is perfect. In this time you can provide them with games, entertainment, food, and sweets. Older children over age of 6, may like a party time of up to three to four hours. Ensure you have enough entertainment ideas to keep them busy for this amount of time. Sleepover parties should have a finish time specified for the next day.

When do invitations need to be sent? The invitation is really the first hint of the celebration, and the invitation should match the occasion in style and theme. In addition to providing the guests with necessary details, the invitation will offer your guests a hint of what is to come. Send invitations out two to three weeks before the birthday party. Best time for a party? Consider the schedule of your child when choosing the time for a party. If they are young and still take naps, make sure to have the party during their best time. A mid morning party would be beneficial so that the guests can enjoy the time with your child. If you are serving a meal, choose a time that best suits the menu. If you do not plan to serve a meal and just have sweets at the party, choose a time later in the afternoon so that the guests do not

explain to the parents that it is a party for the whole family. Make sure to plan food/events for the parents to join in the fun. The party is a time to celebrate with your child, don’t stress over asking for help to make the party run smoothly. How to follow up when parents do not rsvp? If you want a firm headcount, call to confirm. Sometimes, if siblings are not invited this could be a reason for not responding as parents are trying to figure out schedules. Others might have forgotten or be too busy to attend. A sweet reminder that you would like a response is just a phone call away.

How to ask parents to stay for the duration of the party? There are several ways to handle this situation: include a note on the invitation, address the invitation to the family instead of just the child, or use the RSVP call/email as a time to suggest that parents attend the party along with their children. Most parents of younger children know some kids are more comfortable with their parents around and plan accordingly. If you need the assistance,

To make this pancake party in a hurry, a few balloons, a homemade cake, Blumeboxes turned cake stands and a few store bought treats were key. Everything was made and assembled the evening before the party so all we had to do was put things in place for our party guests in the morning. Party printables in Frog Prince Paperie’s Palm Beach pattern were used to bring some color and personalization to the food spread. A welcoming heap of silver dollar pancakes topped with melting butter waited for the girls’ hungry tummies. Since we didn’t have weeks to wait for designer sugar cookies, we bought premade sugar cookies from the grocery store and precolored fondant and cut out monograms for the tops of the cookies, much to the delight of the birthday girl. A homemade box cake with a special cake topper finished off the display.

BRIGHT AND BOLD.. At the highly styled pancake and pa jama party,coffee was definitely optional with all this eye popping color at breakfast. Hot pink and orange against a neutral white made color the star of the party and a big impression on our little guests. The party was all about pancakes and pa jamas, and with a bit of an upscale edge, we made a big nod to the birthday girlâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite thing: hotel room service. THREE STEP POMANDERS

EASY FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS THAT IMPRESS Beautiful pomander arrangements like the ones seen in the “Pancakes and Pa jamas” party are really very easy to make. Their easy of assembly makes them a perfect party accessory - simple to create, but have a huge visual impact at the party. You’ll need 25 carnations give or take to cover a 4 inch ball of floral foam.

Step 1. Cut the stems of the carnations to about 1 inch, removing all leaves. Step 2. Insert carnations into a floral foam ball that has been soaked in water. Start at the bottom and add the flowers in concentric rings. Make sure you put enough pressure on the flower head to put it all the way in on the first push. Place the carnations into the foam close together enough that the petals touch. The flowers will continue to open, filling in the empty spaces. Step 3. Once all the flowers have been placed in the floral foam, put the pomander on top of a vase that has been weighted in the bottom so the arrangement does not fall over. Water the arrangement by placing the ball in a shallow dish of water.

(con’t) Trader Joe’s were re-imagined as clouds. Round, sprinkle-covered grocery store sugar cookies were given red licorice “strings” and displayed like a bunch of balloons. Blue jello and cool whip were layered to make cloud parfaits. Grapes were nature’s perfect balloonshaped treat. And simple cupcakes with printable balloon toppers were the perfect birthday treat. Lunches were prepackaged in small boxes: water, grilled cheese sandwiches cut into balloon shapes with a cookie cutter, and “balloon strings” (shredded carrots). Décor: A quick way to make any party personalized and special is with customized printables. Cut out a few shapes, and you have a banner. Punch out a few circles and glue them to lollipop sticks, and you have beautifully embellished cupcakes. Add flags to straws, and you have something utterly adorable that can’t be bought in any store.

The elements are all the same on the dessert table. Creating the high style table wasn’t about adding many more items; it was about the quality of the desserts served and ingenuity in serving them.

BALLOON OBSTACLE COURSE A ballon obstacle course was a fun way to keep the three year olds active and interested at the party. Activities need to be planned with the age of the guests in mind, and this simple, whimsical, on-theme game engaged the gross motor skills and boundless energy of the three year old guests perfectly. As for the favorite part of the course? Popping the balloons. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really the simple things!

Ribbon Buntings Buntings always add a bit of fun and festive flair to any celebration. That they are extremely easy to create makes them an even better party element to use. To make, all you’ll need is some ribbon in different widths, a length of string, a glue gun and a pair of scissors

Cut a piece of string the desired length. Embroidery floss is great for this project. Then cut lengths of ribbon, anywhere from 1.5” to 4” long. You really don’t need to be precise.

Fold ribbon in half, and use hot glue gun to attach to the string. A low temperature glue gun is best for this project, as your fingers will come close to all that hot glue!

Cut inverted Vs in the bottom of each ribbon with a pair of sharp scissors. If you want to customize the bunting even more, cut your printable straw flags in half and glue on top of each ribbon flag in contrasting colors.

balloon party tricks Candle Tricks If you’re sticking something in food, it’s important to be sure that you’re using a food safe item. Lollipop sticks are the standard for making printable cupcake toppers, but as soon as I saw these twirly birthday candles, I knew they would be perfect for the High Style Balloons party. A simple switch out, but such a great effect! One hint: just tape them on the printable circles. Don’t try to use hot glue. v

Cloud Tricks Homemade meringues are actually really easy to make. (Recipe at http://www.tikkido.com/ node/511 ) A large round tip on a piping bag is all you need to make edible, light-as-air cloud confections. To make them look even more like clouds, dust a little blue luster dust into the nooks and crannies of the clouds.

Sandwich Tricks An easy way to dress up any sandwich is to cut them in fun shapes. A cookie cutter in the party theme makes this craft take only seconds.

happy trails to you Seeing the end of a project several months in the making is bittersweet. All the parties we had the fun of holding and hours spent learning new programs and design concepts are now put to bed. But on the horizon are new party adventures and new ideas to conquer.
