Principal announces departure from Winterbourne International Academy

People urged over library consultation

HE hasn’t been in the job for a year but the principal of Winterbourne International Academy (WIA) has announced his resignation from the post. Richard Haupt’s decision will involve another shake-up for the federation that runs the academy as it tries to get back on track after experiencing “turbulent times”. Those difficulties have included a poor Ofsted report for both WIA and its sister Yate International Academy, a strike by teachers at the Winterbourne campus and the departure after only eight months of chief executive principal of the federation, Beverley Martin. Her replacement, Adam Williams, is still settling into his role since arriving in February. Mr Haupt joined the academy to replace Rob Evans, who retired after more than 30 years at WIA and its predecessor, the Ridings High School. Mr Williams said Mr Haupt had led the academy “through

Appeal for more patients to get involved in medical centre group FROME Valley Medical Centre is looking to recruit more members for its patient participation group, especially men. The centre has had a PPG for more than two years, although it is only this month that establishing such a group has become a mandatory requirement for all English GP practices. Its purpose is to form a link between patients, GPs and their practices, leading to high quality and responsive care. Tricia Thompson, a member of the Frome Valley Medical Centre PPG, said the aim of the group was to help patients take more responsibility for their health and to contribute to the continuous improvement of services and care. It also fostered better communication between the practice and patients, gave practical support to the practice and helped implement change.

St Peter’s church celebrates 700th anniversary

as they revived the medieval tradition of blessing the church. The Bishop of Bristol, Michael Hill was the preacher at the service and to end the service he blessed the church whilst the congregation surrounded the church to “hold it in our arms”. During the service the young people of the Church, Frampton C of E School and the community were involved in a short minipageant which told the story of the Church and its place in the community, from the building of the mediaeval church in 1315, of which the tower still remains, through the rebuilding by Dr. Foxe in 1858 and up to the present day.

THE community in Frampton Cotterell has celebrated the 700th anniversary of St Peter’s Church with a special service attended by the Bishop of Bristol.

The children from the church school re-enacted the original planning of the church in 1315 and then the local brownies dressed in Victorian costume to set out the scene as the present church was rebuilt in 1858. Members of the church showed the different aspects which are supported today by the church in the local community.

The event took place on Mothering Sunday, and saw worshippers form a human chain around the historic building

Groups of children from the Crossbow Preschool also got involved, singing Happy Birthday to the church.

Public urged to join in consultation on future of libraries PEOPLE concerned about the future of Winterbourne library are being urged to have their say during a consultation exercise now running. South Gloucestershire Council needs to save £650,000 from its library service budget, with users of the Winterbourne facility in Flaxpits Lane worried that its hours could be cut or its entire future put in jeopardy. The mobile library could also be scrapped, while funding for Chipping Sodbury’s library could stop. A petition set up to try and protect Winterbourne library has been signed by thousands of people but the council wants as many people as possible to give their views via its formal consultation process. However, it said no changes were planned before October 2017 and it anticipated that through discussions with communities during the next

year, alternative options could be negotiated to help avoid many cuts in the service. That could involve greater community involvement in the operating of libraries.

The consultation is one of a trio of public have-a-say schemes running until May 13 as the council tries to make its significant savings. When it set its 2016-17 budget in February, it included savings of an extra £22 million from annual savings by 2019-20. As well as libraries, it is also looking at its office accommodation, including its Badminton Road offices in Yate, and is considering introducing community hubs from where multiple services can be provided. Priority areas for that kind of set-up would include Yate. Council leader Matthew Riddle, said: “The council has no choice but to reduce spending but we do have a choice in how we do it. Our priority remains

to protect frontline services, particularly for the most vulnerable, wherever we can.” As part of the consultations, drop-in events have been planned, including one in Winterbourne library on Tuesday, April 19, from 2pm7pm. There are also two in Yate library on Saturday, April 2, from 9.30am-1pm and on Monday, April 11, from 2pm-7pm, the second to also cover information on the mobile library. There will also be an office accommodation drop-in event in the Badminton Road council offices on Tuesday, April 12, from 4pm-7pm. Visit www.southglos. gov.uk/consultation for more details. A second round of consultation will take place in the autumn on updated plans.

NEARLY 30 people received awards for their valuable voluntary contribution to South Gloucestershire. Litter picking, road safety, the environment and helping the vulnerable were just some of the areas in which those recognised have worked in their spare time. There was also a special award for Dr Derek Dominey for his support of people with dementia in the district. The community awards are given by each year’s chairman or woman of South Gloucestershire Council. Councillor Erica Williams, the current chairwoman, presented the awards with Sara-Jane Watkins, principal of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, which hosted the ceremony at its WISE Campus. Among those recognised were Eileen Holcombe and Shirley Owen, whose many contributions to Paul’s Place in Coalpit Heath include providing hot lunches for the adults with disabilities who meet at the centre. Connie Jarvis received her award for helping improve community life in Winterbourne Down. Having taught locally, she has been a central figure in many organisations from the WI to the May Day carnival team, also taking on the chairmanship of the Winterbourne Down Society when it was in danger of closing. Paul Hulbert was recognised for his commitment to environmental projects at Wapley Woods nature reserve and Wapley Common, south of Yate, and his role in youth support, road safety and deprived areas, including leading a cycle group and being a key player in Abbotswood Action Group, Yate. Jason Bidwell started the successful Frampton Cotterell Harriers to encourage existing

and new runners, going on to play a big part in inspiring schoolchildren to improve their health and fitness through running. Meanwhile, St Saviour’s Church, Coalpit Heath, celebrated awards to Mary Head, a voluntary commissioned lay minister and member of the Churches Together committee, and Trevor Thompson, whose 25 years’ service to the church includes ten as churchwarden. Mary has run much of the church’s children’s work for 17 years, runs and prepares monthly bereavement lunches, has taken supplies to Uganda through the Mothers’ Union and delivered food and gifts to refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol. Trevor uses his woodworking skills to make items for the church, helps with maintenance and organises the church floodlighting for special events. He also gives talks and produces displays on local history.

TWO women who shaved their heads for charity are thanking supporters after raising thousands of pounds for their chosen charities. Carol Horne and Zuby Choudhury had their hair cut off at an event at the Globe in February. Zuby has raised so far £1800 for the Beacon Cancer Trust and Carol has reached £1200 for the Coeliac UK charity. The cut hair was donated to the Little Princess Trust which provides wigs for children undergoing cancer treatment. Ruby said: “It’s been just about a month now and I am beginning to own my reflection. I’m loving the fact that I can be out of the door in 10 mins in the morning.” Carol told the Voice: “A huge thank you to everyone who came down. It was an amazing evening. It was lovely to see the C of E children and parents as well as softball friends. My family are very proud of me and it will be an experience I will treasure for a very long time.”

Principal announces departure from WIA in further shake-up at academy MORE changes are being made at Winterbourne International Academy (WIA) after its principal announced his resignation less than a year after taking up the appointment. Richard Haupt joined the academy to take over the role that had been held by Rob Evans, who retired after being at WIA and its predecessor, the Ridings High School, for 33 years - the last six as principal. Mr Haupt will remain at the school until the end of August, with the process of finding his replacement now under way. Adam Williams, chief executive principal of the Ridings’ Federation of Academies, which includes WIA, said: “Mr Haupt has decided that, having led Winterbourne International Academy through a period of unease, the academy is now in a much more stable position and, therefore, he believes it is an appropriate time to conclude his tenure as principal. “I have agreed with Mr Haupt that he will remain as principal of the academy until August 31, continuing to manage the welfare and educational needs of students and staff.” Mr Haupt took on his role during the short-lived tenure of Beverley Martin as chief executive principal. In what had been described as turbulent times, WIA and its sister Yate International Academy were told by Ofsted inspectors to improve, while teachers at the Winterbourne campus went on strike, claiming

Richard Haupt with WIA pupils a breakdown in relations with the academy leadership. Ms Martin left last autumn after about eight months, leading to the arrival of Mr Williams, who thanked Mr Haupt for his time at the academy. He said: “I really appreciate his work and the work he will continue to do for us. He has contributed a lot to the academy in the last year.” Mr Haupt had worked in both secondary and tertiary education in the public and private sector before moving to Winterbourne. His previous roles have included deputy head at Matravers School in Westbury, Wiltshire, and assistant dean at Yeovil College.

Panic Stations - Court Players review THE Court Players choice of “Panic Stations” by Derek Benfield did not disappoint the audiences that filled The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy for all three performances. Derek Benfield is a master of farce and no stranger to acting himself. Amongst his most well known roles was that of Robert, husband of housewife and amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthrop in the TV series. English gentleman Chester Dreadnought (Dave Masters) purchases an idyllic country cottage but instead of finding the peace and quiet he had longed for discovers he is in the centre of a full military exercise that has been organised by the local training camp. He also finds himself plagued by local unhandy man Abel Bounty and his wife (Mike McDonald and Sam Palmer) who have been brought in to get the cottage ready for its new owner. Next on the scene is Carol (Louise Cox), a young and naïve women who, having met

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

Chester in the local pub moves in prior to his arrival mistakenly thinking the cottage is to be their love-nest. Confusion and misunderstandings abound when Chester’s wife Patricia (Carole Vincent) arrives with her aristocratic parents Lord and Lady Elrood in tow (Kevin

Stephens and Jean Clarke). Gill Cope adds to the mayhem as the eccentric historian Miss Partridge and the suitably camouflaged Dan Long has a commanding presence as Sergeant Everest. This is a very “wordy” play and for the most part the cast

remembered their dialogue and kept the pace moving. On the odd occasion when the dialogue slacked it was more than compensated for by some fine facial expressions and great characterisations. The set was well constructed and decorated and we were never in any doubt that it was anything other than a lovely country cottage in need of some redecoration. There were effective sound effects, realistic props and costumes that were in keeping with each character. Many people were disappointed at not being able to see this show as the “House Full” notices went up two weeks before the performance which goes to show that amateur drama is alive and well in the local community. The Court Players next production is “Not The Royal Variety Show” in July and the pantomime “Humpty Dumpty” at the end of January 2017. Review by Louis Richards

HEALTH leaders in South Gloucestershire have urged residents to help reduce pressure on their local NHS services. They have been asked to choose the most appropriate service for their needs, which could include their GP, local pharmacist or the minor injuries unit in Yate. The call comes after an increase in non-emergency attendances at hospital accident and emergency departments. Those departments are already struggling with a high level of demand for its services and increased admissions from respiratory linked conditions. Dr Jon Hayes, clinical chairman of South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “If people need medical advice, they should consider the most appropriate service for their needs. “Local pharmacists can recommend treatments for common ailments such as coughs, colds and sore throats and minor injury units can treat broken bones and minor cuts.” Young children are among the most likely to attend A&E for non-emergency injuries or illnesses but could often receive the care they need from local NHS services without a hospital visit. People have been reminded that A&E departments and the 999 service are for serious, life-threatening conditions such as loss of consciousness, heavy blood loss, severe chest pain, head injuries or a suspected stroke or heart attack.

Housing society set for next stage of scheme to replace poor homes WORK is due to start in the next couple of months on the latest phase of Merlin Housing Society’s scheme to redevelop or refurbish hundreds of homes. The association has nearly finished building its first 39 homes in Coalpit Heath, on two sites either side of Oldlands

Iron Acton will benefit from the new phase of work Iron Acton, and in Newlands Avenue, Willow Way and Bell Road in Coalpit Heath. Merlin said it had been meeting those people living close to the sites of the £8.5 million development to update them on progress. It invited neighbours to two events to speak with its staff and contractors Lovell Partnerships, which is building the homes. Development manager Noreen Twomey said: “We were pleased that so many people attended. There were lots of specific questions about the sites, which we were able to answer and allay any concerns about the building work. “There’s huge demand for quality, affordable housing in the area and we’re committed to meeting this demand. These homes are in great locations and

The properties being provided include one and two-bedroom flats, two, three and fourbedroom houses and some bungalows. The scheme is part of a wider project to redevelop or refurbish 1,500 homes in South Gloucestershire that were built after the Second World War as a quick solution to the housing crisis but which are now in a poor condition and costly to keep warm. Meanwhile, Merlin will also be knocking down garages in Coalville Road, Coalpit Heath, next winter to make way for two bungalows and two flats.

Dream finally comes true as Yate’s new cinema set to screen first movies YATE’S long awaited cinema is about to open its doors to moviegoers, with Disney’s new Jungle Book already set to be screened in its first week. People in the town have pressed for a cinema for many years, saying the population was big enough to support such a facility. Their dream came true when it was announced a six-screen cinema would be included in the Yate Riverside scheme - an extension of Yate Shopping Centre. Now the date for its opening has been revealed as Friday, April 29. The cinema, operated by Cineworld, will have seats for 967 film fans. The company said state-of-the-art screens would give crystal-clear images and a

powerful digital sound system. It has also created 35 local jobs, with a recruitment day held at Yate Leisure Centre leading to the appointment of a number of the staff. Those recruited include Kate Richardson, 28, of Yate, who has been appointed as a team member. She said: “I’ve lived in Yate for just over ten years now and am so excited that Cineworld is opening here. I was thrilled to be told that I had got the job.” Kate said local people had been waiting for a cinema for the town “for a long time” and she was keen to be involved now that it had arrived. Steve Plank, general manager of the complex, said: “We’re delighted about the opening of Cineworld Yate. We have

People urged to check they can vote TIME is running out for people to make sure they can vote in the forthcoming election for a police and crime commissioner for the area. Voters will go to the polls on Thursday, May 5, to elect a commissioner but anyone who misses the April 18 deadline for registration will be unable to have their say. Anyone not currently on the electoral register but takes action ahead of the cut-off date will also be registered in good time for the referendum on the UK’s membership of the European Union, which takes place on June 23. Ben Brook, head of the Electoral Commission in the English regions, said: “Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are less likely to be registered to vote. “If people are not registered, they won’t be able to have a say on issues that directly affect their day-to-day life in South Gloucestershire.” People urged to check they can vote in time for election and Euro referendum

Triathlon gives triple Police issue alert chance to help combat MS over theft of Land Rovers LAND Rover owners are being warned by Avon and Somerset police to take extra precautions as a result of a rise in thefts during the past six months. The vehicles are being targeted by thieves, regardless of the age of the models, with the Defender at particular risk. As manufacture of the Defender has now been stopped, police believe that model in particular could increasingly be sought out by car thieves. Owners have been advised to park their vehicles in well-lit or overlooked areas, or preferably in a secure garage. They have also been recommended to fit security devices such as alarms, tracking devices and immobilisers, to use a marking solution or permanent marker on component parts and to etch windows with the vehicle registration number. Anyone with information about Land Rover thefts should contact the police force by dialling 101 or calling Crimestoppers on 0800 55111.

Will you join me in raising awareness of dementia in May?

F

ROM Sunday the 15th of May until Saturday the 21st the Alzheimer’s Society will be running fundraisers and awareness sessions up and down the UK in an effort to raise awareness of people living with dementia in our communities, to provide support to those with a diagnosis and to help families, friends and colleagues confront their worries about the condition. The society has a very powerful message to share with us and it is something that I have and will continue to share and promote too as I organise awareness sessions across our community; that core message is that ‘we believe that life doesn’t end when dementia begins”. I strongly believe that this should be true for the 2600 people currently living with dementia in South Gloucestershire and for their families. The projections present a worrying trend, with the Alzheimer’s Society believing this number will increase to around 4000 by 2021. The Prime Minister has made some welcome progress, investing £300 Million in the UK science and medical sector

to help our brilliant minds find a breakthrough and to tackle the condition head on, with annual investment in dementia research set to double by 2025. This government’s commitment is a start but I am determined that together we can I build upon this locally for our community. That is why on Friday the 20th from 11am until 12pm I will be hosting my third free dementia awareness session in our area, at the Coalpit Heath Village and Miners Social Club. I have also began reaching out to First Bus, Local shop owners and other public facing people so that we can see some positive action in our area to ensure that as many of us as possible are able to obtain a greater understanding of living with dementia and how we can make a difference in ensuring believing that ‘life doesn’t end where dementia begins’ is a reality in South Gloucestershire.

Spring is with us at last Now spring is truly with us, are you beginning to start to think about getting your legs and toes out and are you prepared? It’s time to spring clean and get summer ready. Here are our top 5 tips for this month. Feet First Don’t ignore toe nails and heels; it’s time to get ahead and scrub calluses with a pumice stone to get rid of rough, dead skins. At least once a week moisture overnight using a really thick cream. Lips Exfoliate your lips gently with a soft tooth brush and then apply lip balm. Stick to a lipstick with conditioners like vitamin E or macadamia oils as they are great to nourish and moisturise. Hair The weather and the central heating can cause your scalp to flake and your hair to become

brittle. Try an oil treatment to get your hair back into condition and ask your hair dresser for a treatment the next time you are in. It’s worth that investment even if it’s at the start of each season. You can then manage your own conditioning treatments at home. If you are blow drying your hair regularly try using a cooler setting and try not to use your straightener every day. Body Time to start twice weekly body scrubs to get rid of that dead winter skins. N Plymouth. He built a stone pillar on one rock and to this he bolted an eighty foot high wooden frame. It was an elaborate building with balconies, decorations and slogans written on the side. At the top was a cluster of candles to shine a light through a glass lantern. However it did not prove to be strong enough for such a stormy part of our coastline and on November 26th, 1703 a great storm swept the lighthouse and its builder off the rock and into the ferocious sea below. Henry Winstanley was never seen again. His efforts had not been wasted as future lighthouse builders learned from his mistakes. Today lighthouses are strong; they are controlled by computers and give out a light visible for many miles. All who use the sea owe a dept of gratitude to people of the past who began building warning lights to guide ships clear of danger. In life we need signs to warn us of dangers not only physical danger but moral and spiritual danger. It is easy in an almost consumer led society to consider success by the material possessions we have. Do we have the latest model of motor car, can we impress friends by our exotic holidays and so on? It is easy to get caught up in such races in life that we can never win because someone is eventually going to

23

over take us. The real standard in life is are we ready for the day when it ends? Will we be proud to look back and defend our actions and the way in which we have treated other people. In short is the world in some way, however little, a better place for us being in it? If we end each day by taking time to reflect on what we have done that day to help others in some small way and start each day by thinking how we are going to use our God given talents to benefit mankind, then we might not only help ourselves to have a more fulfilling life but like a lighthouse help guide others to a safer way of life. I am reminded of the the words of Minnie Louise Haskins in her poem The Gate Of The Year; And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: “Give me a light, that I may tread safely into the unknown!” And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than a light and safer than the Known way.”

Flying teddies ready to launch in Frampton CHILDREN, and kids at heart are being invited to throw their favourite teddy off the tower at St Peter’s Church - but don’t worry they will have a parachute. The event, designed rise funds for the church, had to be postponed last year after the tower was damaged. It’s now scheduled to go ahead on May 1 from 12.30 until 5pm. Children will be able to make a parachute for their favourite Teddy or small soft toy in a workshop in the church. When completed, the children and their families will be able to watch as their Teddy is launched from the top of the church tower. Tea, Coffee and cakes will also be available in the church, and the cost of launching your teddy is £2. Organisers say the best size of teddy for a successful descent is around 20cm high. Bank Holiday Monday (May 2) is a reserve day if weather intervenes.

FRAMPTON Athletic Football Club have played host to their third Sport Relief event. More than 150 people took part in the event, which saw the old and the young walk, jog, run and even cycle through the streets of Frampton Cotterell, aiming to complete either a 1, 3 or 6 mile route as fast as they could. Families, couples and friends ran together and there were even a few serious participants taking part from the Frampton Cotterell Harriers running club. Event Co-coordinator, Nick Talbot, said: “It was a fantastic event for the local community and it was great to see people of all ages and abilities taking part. Special thanks must go to the volunteers from both the football club and from outside. I’d also like to thank everyone that took part and raised money for Sport Relief”. The total amount raised by the event will be announced in the summer.

Back pain

By Craig from the Willow Brook Clinic

A

RE you feeling a little ‘creaky’ and your back has a few aches and pains. Nothing ‘serious’, but enough to know that it hurts and maybe you feel the need for a few painkillers every now and then. Perhaps your backache is enough to stop you from doing the things you want to do. Maybe you have had back pain for years and you have simply learnt ‘to live with it.’ Back pain is normally caused by overloading the joints or muscles in the lower back. The pain can vary from being localised or can spread to the buttocks and even into the legs, which can be as a result of a trapped nerve, commonly called Sciatica. Chiropractors are trained to help patients with back pain and will treat patients according to their individual needs. After taking a history of the problem, a relevant physical examination is done. The chiropractor discusses the best way forward with the patient, and treatment can be in different forms – joint manipulation, muscle work, massage, mobilisation, acupuncture and home

exercises. Not all patients need all the different forms of treatment and treatment is discussed with the patient before being undertaken. Chiropractic care has been shown to be extremely effective in treating lower back pain. However, the longer you leave something, the longer it takes to get better. Chiropractors tend to see patients with back problems as they are seen as ‘spinal specialists’. However, they are trained in assessing and treating various conditions including general joint and muscle pain, sports injuries and many more. I particularly enjoy treating neck problems and headaches, some types of which respond very well to Chiropractic care. All ages can benefit from chiropractic care. Treatment is modified for younger and older patients. Currently my youngest patient is a gorgeous 5 month old and my oldest is a sprightly 91 year old! Get well, stay well

Entries open for 10k run THE Watermore 10k run is accepting entries for this year’s race. The popular event will take place on Sunday September 25, starting from Watermore School at 11am. The event has proved hugely popular and raised funds for Watermore School in the last few years. Although this year’s event is on the same date as the Bristol half marathon, organisers are confident the race will fill its quota of places again. The popular rainbow run for children is also open for registration. Runners can enter online at the website: www.watermore10k.co.uk

Around the W.I. Frampton Cotterell WI – April FOR our March meeting, Richard Drew came in to meet us all and to talk about his news and sports journalism/ broadcasting career, which runs alongside his “significant other” job of Editor for the Frome Valley Voice. Of course, we all know Richard because of his association with FVV, however it’s radio and TV news and sports commentating has really formed the basis of his work over the years. Having gained a degree in Communication and Media Production at Bournemouth University, he trained and worked with the BBC before working in Singapore for ESPN as a sports broadcaster. He worked in Dubai for a few years before returning to the UK in 2009. Travel is certainly a perk of the job - amongst other things he has worked on events such as Formula One, the Sochi

Winter Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in Scotland – and this year he will be heading off to Rio for coverage of the Olympic Games. For our April meeting Monica Cave will be coming in to give us a talk on Guide Dogs – this will take place on the 26th at St. Peters Hall. Our other events coming up over the coming months will include craft demonstrations, a Beetle Drive evening (April 12th), a chance to learn about and try Morris dancing and a presentation from a local award-winning gardener. So there is lots to look forward to this coming year, as well as our summer meal out (venue as yet tbc) and our involvement in the Frampton Festival in July, where we will be hosting our regular cake stall and selling copies of our very own members’ cookery book. Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at

Special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our skittles and darts teams. Please search FramptonCottWI to find out more, and do like our page. Winterbourne Down W I Report – At our March meeting Martyn Poole give us an account of his work and involvement in the Soup Run for the homeless in Bristol. He explained how things have changed over the 30 years he has been running this venture, with the change of drinking hours and cheap strong larger making it worse and more vulnerable for the people living on the streets, sleeping in doorways and on park benches. Martyn told us some personal and moving stories of a few characters he had met plus the hand out of socks, razors, toothbrushes and blankets.

Some people hide their blankets in black bags in the middle of roundabouts during the day. Martyn’s band of ladies cook soup and even pizzas. It was a most moving talk. During this last month members have been to some good events, including a one act play about Mrs Beeton followed by a cream tea, a dance afternoon and the group darts competition. We have been successful with our skittles competitions and won the group title. We also had a very well supported coffee morning at one of our member’s homes. Our next meeting is on Thursday 7th April with Nicola Eaton from the Really Expensive Chocolate Company. This will include tastings. On Thursday 5th May we will be holding the Resolution meeting. Don’t forget to come to our cake and jam stall at the May Day Carnival on 2nd May. All are welcome to join us at 7.30pm in All Saints Church Hall.

MARCH was a mixed month for Frampton Athletic. The first team saw their title hopes fade away, whilst their ‘A’ team made their way to the GFA Cup Final. Frampton’s first team endured a frustrating time in March. They started the month with an away game against Talbot Knowle United, with only 3 points separating the top 6 teams in the division, with Frampton sitting in 5th and Talbot Knowle United in 4th. A win could have taken Frampton to the top of the table. That pressure seemed to get to the players on the day, as they found themselves 1-0 down straight from the kick off. After battling back to 2-2, a defensive error saw them concede directly from a corner late in the game, leading to a 3-2 defeat. After a week off, they then played out an abysmal 0-0 draw at Oldland Abbotonians Reserves, a game in which neither goalkeeper was really tested, and Frampton in particular looked to be missing a striker to put any chances away. This fortune continued in to their third and final game of the month, which was at Beesmoor Road against Greyfriars Athletic. Frampton again looked to create

Mixed March for Frampton Athletic

numerous opportunities, but lacked that killer instinct in front of goal and struggled to test the visiting goalkeeper. The game was somewhat spoilt by the weather, as Storm Katie was in town and delivered gale force winds and heavy rain throughout the second half, which was to the detriment of Frampton, who faced the weather in the second period. The game finished 1-1. It was a month which has all but finished any chance Frampton had of claiming the league title. Frampton’s Reserve side were only able to play 2 games in March, as they continued their right against relegation. With their side decimated by injuries, holidays and call ups to the first team, the Reserve side were very much down to the bare bones and were having to call upon a number of regulars from the ‘A’ side. They started the month with a tough game against AEK Boco Reserves, who were looking for promotion. This game came on the back of a very disappointing 4-0 defeat against Henbury

Reserves, Manager Yinka Brownlow and Assistant Nick Talbot made themselves very clear before the game about their expectations from the players in terms of effort and attitude and these words must have hit home, as the team went out and played very well. T They conceded an early penalty, which was well saved by goalkeeper Nick Talbot. Dan Cook then converted a penalty at the other end to give Frampton the lead. This was a lead that they were able to keep right up until the 85th minute, when then finally succumbed to the pressure being put on them, and AEK Boco got the equaliser that, on balance, they probably deserved. Following the high of their Semi-Final victory in the GFA Cup, it was back to the bread and butter of the league for Frampton’s ‘A’ team - and a dose of reality. Facing 2 of the top 4 teams in the league, they slumped to a 5-1 and a 4-1 defeats against Rangeworthy Reserves and Crosscourt United respectively. However, with the cup final

coming closer and closer, players are clearly starting to stake their claim for a place on the final team sheet, and this brought out a superb performance against Cutters Friday at Crossbow. Two goals from Martyn Tozer and one each for Brian Cook and Ryan Cater saw them put Cutters Friday to the sword, as they also managed a clean sheet, despite centre half, Shaun Buist, taking the gloves between the sticks. Whilst the cup final on Monday 4th April is the highlight of April for the ‘A’ team, they also have to continue to fight against relegation in the league and have no less than 8 league games to play in April. Manager Brian Cook is relishing the challenge in front of him and he will be hoping that a cup victory will spur them on to fight relegation and obtain a respectable finishing position in the league. Come along and support Frampton Athletic ‘A’ in the GFA Minor Cup Final against Thornbury Baptist Church on Monday 4th April at the GFA Headquarters, Oaklands Park in Almondsbury. All are welcome.

RIDERS William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson are set to return to top level competition at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials after suffering serious injuries last season. Fox-Pitt, who took the 2015 Badminton title on Chilli Morning, received a head trauma after a fall at an event in France last October but was recently cleared by a specialist to compete again. Meanwhile, his great Britishbased New Zealand rival Andrew Nicholson is already back to winning ways after miraculously avoiding paralysis in a fall at the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe Park in August. He sustained a serious neck injury and underwent eight hours of surgery to repair fractures and stabilise his cervical spine. His surgeon told him the injury he had would have caused paralysis at the time of injury in 98 per cent of cases. The riders are among one of the strongest ever fields of competitors entered for Badminton, which takes place just three months before the Olympic Games in Brazil. Current Olympic eventing champion Michael Jung will head the German challenge with La Biosthetique Sam, while Zara Tindall will be aiming for a strong performance with High Kingdom to try and get a place in the British team for Rio de Janeiro. Her fellow silver medallists

from London 2012, including Fox-Pitt, will also be going out to impress the selectors, with Nicola Cook and Tina Cook challenging for places. Other British hopefuls include Pippa Funnell, Oliver Townend, Gemma Tattersall, Izzy Taylor and Laura Collett. Badminton has also attracted a strong American contingent, while the Australians have two previous Mitsubishi Motors Trophy winners in contention in Paul Tapner and Sam Griffiths. Nicholson’s fellow Kiwis challenging for victory include Mark Todd, Jock Paget, husband and wife team Tim and Jonelle Price and Blyth Tait, returning to Badminton after a 13-year absence. Although crowd favourite Mary King doesn’t have an entry this year, her daughter Emily hopes to make her Badminton debut with Brookleigh, 25 years after her mother won the first Mitsubishi Motors Trophy. The international, celebrating a quarter of a century of backing by Mitsubishi, runs on the Badminton estate, near Chipping Sodbury, from May 5-8, to be preceded on May 3 and 4 by the annual challenge for grassroots riders in the newly named Mitsubishi Motors Cup event.

FRAMPTON’S dominance in the league continued in March for both teams, with good wins against top of the league teams looking for promotion, Anna Keir writes. The first team came up against Phoenix early in March. It was a solid performance and Phoenix posed little threat as the team won 35-19. Carol Rowson in defence and Emily Dible as goal attack were voted as Players of the Match. The first’s next game was against top of the league team, Ashton Aces. This was a tough game, with Ashton playing a rough, physical game. Although Ashton tried to rattle Frampton, they stayed strong and put together a fantastic team performance. We welcomed back Amy Davidge in defence, and she was voted by the opposition as Player of the Match for making some important interceptions. The team voted Carol Rowson as their player of the match, for her brilliant play out of position as Wing Attack. The final score was 37-31 to Frampton. The second team came

Good times continue for netballers up against Longwell Green. Frampton showed some great team work, and worked the ball down the court and into the D to the shooters with ease. Frampton were able to turn Longwell’s centres, and their defence was too strong. The final score was a 40-20 victory. Anna Keir as centre was the opposition’s player and Teresa Chadwick as goal defence was Frampton’s. In mid-March both teams were hit with injuries and illnesses but managed to pull together just enough players and racked up another double win. The firsts played Chipping Sodbury who only had six players. The team won with by a large margin; 75-9. Frampton kept their heads and played brilliantly. Despite the extra player advantage, the team were focused on improving their goal difference in the league. Emily Dible won the opposition’s player of the match for her accurate

Frampton Under 8’s win the Gloucester Plate FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby club are celebrating after their youngest players won the Gloucester Plate. The Under 8 team had already negotiated their way through a pool stage at North Bristol. A win against Old Richians, was followed by a draw with Yatton and a loss to Dursley. The youngsters came up with a win against Stow on the Wold which took them into the quarter finals of the plate and facing Chosen Hill. Despite feeling tired, Frampton managed to win by 2 tries, booking themselves a place in the semi-finals as part of the Finals day. The boys showed determination and team play in their match against Minchinhampton, winning turn over ball by hurrying the opposition and forcing them back. The final whistle saw a narrow win, 4-3, booking a place in the final against Cirencester. Cirencester had beaten Stroud on their way to the final and threatened to be serious opposition. There was an early disruption when, after just 90 seconds, the referee from Cleve had to leave as his team were in the cup final. Luckily the coach from Stroud offered to help out and refereed the rest of the match. The first half continued to be entertaining with excellent rugby from both teams with nothing to separate them, but Frampton were 5-4 down at the half time whistle. The second half was another close affair, but eventually Frampton’s pressure overcame Cirencester’s game, with turn overs pushing them 8-6 into the lead. At the final whistle, the pitch flooded with parents and Frampton fans celebrating a memorable achievement.

shooting and Frampton voted for centre court player Jazz Bartlett. The 2nd team faced Doves, a good team who Frampton were joint third in the league with. The game was scrappy at times and the score was close throughout, but Frampton managed to extend the lead during each quarter. The final score was 27-20. Anna Keir, as centre and wing defence, was voted by the opposition as Player

of the Match. Frampton voted for Camilla Smith for her calm and measured shooting, and Catherine Neck for her strength and determination in defence, The firsts are now top of the league. The second team are now 3rd in the table. The teams are now focussed on their final 3 games of the season in April, before going on a well-earned tour to Center Parcs.

Fight on to avoid relegation

Sodbury’s Lee Ralph takes on the Frampton defence in the local derby between Frampton Cotterell and Chipping Sodbury. Frampton’s 40-0 loss came at the end of a mixed month. They also lost 35-5 at Longlevens, but beat Hucclecote 36-25. They remain third from bottom of the Gloucester Premier League. Photo courtesy of Jeff Gendall Photography FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby Club he’d into April hoping for points in their last two games to help their fight against relegation from the Gloucestershire Premier League. Both games are at home against Longlevens (2nd April) and St Mary’s (23rd April). Frampton to stay in The Glos Prem for next season

Frampton sealed an important bonus point victory with a win against Huccelcote to help them in their relegation battle. An impressive win saw 4 tries set up from Frampton’s dominant scrum; two from Karl Whitelock, one from Josh Creed and one penalty try. The final Frampton try came from some

wonderfully slick handling from veteran centre Mike Ashwin to put Ross Sharpe over. The eventual score was 36-25 to Frampton. The win helped Frampton more closer to their Gloucester rivals Longlevens and Huccelcote, but a heavy defeat against a local rivals Chipping Sodbury didn’t help morale or

the team’s hopes of moving up the table. Chipping Sodbury won the game 40-0, although Frampton should have got a lot more from a tight first 60 minutes. Two yellow cards in quick successions for Josh Creed and Jason Boon meant the pace of Sodbury’s game began to take on Frampton.

Frampton U12’s miss out against Minchinhampton The sun made a welcome return as Frampton’s under 12 team took on Minchinhampton in an entertaining battle between two strong packs. An even start saw both sides sounding each other out with Minchinhampton nearly taking an early lead but for a great tackle by Mike. The deadlock was broken when the Frampton defence were caught napping and

a quick penalty was pushed wide for a try in the corner, with the conversion kicked the quarter ended 0-7. Frampton were more determined in the second period and strong defence by Olley, Rory and Roy kept the visitors out. A Frampton penalty by Lewis nearly resulting in a score but the quarter ended scoreless. Minchinhampton scored

again early in the third period when following a line-out the ball was passed along the line for the score in the corner. Their lead was extended when from a scrum the ball was moved wide and a dive in the corner resulted in the ball crossing the line. The final period began in much the same tone and a kick out by Minchinhampton bounced favourably and despite Ben’s best

efforts the ball was picked up for the try. Fram were determined to get on the scoresheet and a brilliant run by Jack nearly saw the breakthrough. However following a scrum the ball went wide and when the ball was stripped, bouncing over the line, Marcus got the telling touch for the try. Jack converted to make the final score 7-28.
