School inspector calls for parents’ support for academy action plan AN OFSTED inspector said the support of parents was needed for action required to improve standards at Winterbourne International Academy. James Sage, from the education watchdog, said students also had to be involved in developing more positive attitudes to learning. Mr Sage was at the academy (WIA) to monitor progress after a report in the spring assessed the school as requiring improvement. It is just one problem facing the school, which has also seen teachers go on strike and Beverley Martin, who had been in overall charge of the Ridings Federation of Academies, leave her post. Mr Sage acknowledged there had been significant changes since the spring inspection which occurred when Ms Martin herself had only been in post for a week - including among senior leaders and to the curriculum. But he said they had not yet had “sufficient impact on improving the quality

of teaching, learning and assessment” and students’ achievement had not risen quickly enough. He also said many teachers did not support changes outlined

in an action plan aimed at making improvements, or did not fully understand what they needed to do, and their trust had to be restored. More on Page 7.

Housing scheme drawn up for former Frampton Cotterell pub car park FOUR houses could be built on land that used to be the car park for the former Western Coach House pub in Frampton Cotterell. Crossman Homes has submitted an outline planning application for the site in Bristol Road, which is in the green belt. But in a document drawn up on Crossman’s behalf by architects Atelier 17, it said as a previously developed plot, it was regarded as a brownfield location and there were grounds for special circumstances to allow building. The developers have suggested putting four fourbedroom houses on the site, where the former pub has already been converted into homes. In the application, Atelier 17 claimed: “The site is a local eyesore and has been in a similar state since the redevelopment of the public house. “But the failure at the time

to consider the overall site public house and car park - in a comprehensive development has left the residual car park as a

‘white elephant’ site. “Failure to allow development will condemn the site to remain a landlocked desolate landscape,

3

commensurate with abandoned industrial sites, which have no value economically, visually, ecologically or sustainably.”

Consultation to open on South Gloucestershire’s development future PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire are being urged to have their say on two major planning blueprints that will shape new development and growth in the district. The first consultation is for the Joint Spatial Plan (JSP) which sets out a 20-year vision for housing and employment expansion in the West of England – the area covered by the former Avon county. Its aim is to set out the most appropriate location and mix of housing, as well as land for employment. It will also identify the transport and other infrastructure requirements needed across the region. Consultation will start on November 9 and will be followed later in the month by South Gloucestershire Council’s own Policies, Sites and Places (PSP) plan. That document sets out new planning policies for the area up to 2027, looking at how new development and growth will be managed, as well as allocating and safeguarding land for various types of development. The council cannot demonstrate a five year supply of housing land so it has to identify extra housing sites - and consult further on them - before submitting the final plan to the inspector.

Spotlight falls on winning police officers in annual awards scheme SOUTH Gloucestershire police officers are among winners in this year’s Avon and Somerset neighbourhood policing awards. A panel of judges sifted through more than 240 nominations to determine the winners for different policing areas, which included neighbourhood police team sergeant Clive Summerill for outstanding customer service. Sgt Summerill is responsible for the teams that cover areas such as Yate, Chipping Sodbury, Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne. The overall winners will now be announced at an awards dinner at the end of November. Other area winners from South Gloucestershire include

the Frampton Cotterell neighbourhood team, special constable Sara White and volunteer police cadet Alex Masey. It was also decided to give a special recognition award to the rural crime team as part of the neighbourhood beat team of the year category. Temporary chief constable Gareth Morgan said: “The standard of nominations for this year’s awards have been outstanding. “It’s always a privilege and source of pride to read the citations, particularly those from the public, outlining the role that officers and staff are undertaking in communities across Avon and Somerset.”

Traffic calming scheme planned outside Frampton Cotterell school COUNCIL leaders are planning to introduce a new system to slow down traffic approaching Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cotterell. Lights advising drivers to stick to a 20mph limit will be installed, to be illuminated at certain times, such as when children go to and from the school in Woodend Road. A consultation exercise has just been completed and depending on the results, South Gloucestershire Council plans to implement the scheme in the current financial year. It said the lights would flash for drivers approaching the school from The Causeway and Meadow View. The scheme is one of a number of projects proposed by the council, which resolved two years ago to ensure all schools in the district were, as far as practicable, covered by a 20mph restriction.

Patient transport scheme needs more helpers to get patients to appointments VOLUNTEER car drivers are needed in South Gloucestershire to help take patients to and from medical appointments. The South Western Ambulance Service wants to expand its patient transport scheme in the district and is about to hold an information event in the hope of recruiting people with their own car and with a few spare hours a week. Last year more than 100,000 patient journeys were completed throughout South Gloucestershire, Bristol and North Somerset under the scheme. Spokesman Paul Crockett said: “Our volunteers play an

important role in ensuring thousands of patients each month across the region get to their appointments on time. “They are greatly appreciated by the many patients they help on a daily basis.” The information session for South Gloucestershire will be held from 11am-1pm on Thursday, November 19, in St Michael’s Church Centre, The Old School Rooms, The Green, Stoke Gifford. Existing volunteers will be there to talk about their role but anyone who can’t make it can get more information by emailing volunteer.drivers@swast.nhs.uk or calling 0300 369 0482.

Minor injuries pilot service set for April launch after OK given by health bosses FORMAL approval has been given to a pilot scheme that increases patients’ choice of where to be treated for minor injuries in South Gloucestershire. The two-year service, set to start next April, will involve GP surgeries dealing with minor injuries, with practice-based nurses being supported by family doctors. Last month it was reported that health chiefs at South Gloucestershire Council had welcomed the pilot. Now members of the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) have given it the go-ahead. Minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries, sprains, cuts and bites will be among the injuries that will be treated. The new service is seen as a way of complementing the Yate Minor Injuries Unit, which local councillors are concerned to protect. More serious injuries will still be treated by A&E services but giving people the chance to be seen closer to home should ease pressure on hospital staff. Appointments for the new service will be available between 8.30am and 6.30pm on weekdays. The CCG is also working to offer a weekend minor injury service at Cossham Hospital. All 25 GP practices in the district have expressed interest in running the service for their registered patients. During the two year trial it will be monitored and evaluated, with patients asked for feedback.

Ofsted demands action to improve academy facing “turbulent times” WINTERBOURNE International Academy has been told it has to take immediate steps to ensure improvements required by Ofsted are made. The school (WIA) has experienced difficult times this year – from a poor report by school inspectors to strikes by teachers and the departure of overall principal Beverley Martin. An inspection by the education watchdog in the spring resulted in demands for improvements to be made. But after Ofsted’s first visit to the academy to check on progress since that assessment, it said effective action to put things right was not being taken. Inspector James Sage made his monitoring visit just days after some 100 teachers had walked out, alleging a breakdown in relations between the majority of teachers and management. Two more strikes took place after the visit in September but further action was suspended to allow a review into the concerns of the teachers to take place. Complaints emerged about Ms Martin’s leadership methods during her short time as chief executive principal at the Ridings Federation of Academies, which includes both Winterbourne and Yate international academies. Teacher unions claimed she had adopted a “confrontational approach” with those whose efforts were needed to turn the Winterbourne site around after its poor Ofsted report. An online petition called for

Ms Martin to go but, as the Voice newspaper series then revealed on Facebook, she went on leave and was no longer in charge. Having only joined the federation in the spring, her departure at the end of October was later announced. Athanasis “Laz” Lazarides, recently elected chairman of trustees at the federation, has spoken of “tough and turbulent” times. But he pledged to listen to staff and parents of youngsters at the federation schools and act on feedback. He said trustees were working positively with the teaching unions and would appoint an interim chief executive principal before making a permanent appointment. But he said: “At the heart of these major events we have

immediately by WIA, including restoring “the trust and confidence of staff to enable the changes made to improve the quality of teaching, learning and assessment to be fully effective”.

At-risk groups urged to take up free flu jab and reduce threat of illness

PEOPLE at an increased risk of developing flu are being urged to get vaccinated against the illness. Free flu vaccinations are available to those aged 65 and above, pregnant women, children aged from two to four and anyone with a long-term health condition. Residents of long-stay residential homes and children in the first two years of school are also eligible. Local GP Dr Ann Sephton, who is the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group clinical lead for urgent care, said people being targeted in the campaign should not delay in getting the jab. She said: “People who have a long-term health condition, even one that’s well managed, or those who are pregnant are at greater risk of severe complications if they catch flu.” For young children, there is a nasal spray that gives quick, painless and effective protection

www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk

without the need for injections. Professor Mark Pietroni, South Gloucestershire’s director for public health, said: “The introduction of the flu vaccination programme is helping to protect and reach the most vulnerable groups in our communities and I would

encourage people to take up the free jab.” The flu vaccination provides protection against the different strains of flu which evolve every year. Evidence from pilot schemes also suggests that vaccination in primary schools has a positive

effect on the transmission of flu in the wider community. Those considered to be at risk should have been contacted by their GP practice about the vaccination but anyone who hasn’t been approached should speak with their practice as soon as possible.

Tip to close temporarily to allow entrance road repair FAMILIES who use the Mangotsfield recycling centre will have to take their waste to other Sort It! centres when it closes for a road repair. The facility in Carsons Road is due to be out of action for a fortnight from November 16 so the road surface at the entrance, which is breaking up, can be fixed. South Gloucestershire Council said it would use the closure to also add three more parking bays at the unloading area. Residents have been asked to take any rubbish during the closure period to the other three recycling centres in the district in Yate, Little Stoke and Thornbury. But they have been reminded that the Little Stoke facility has a height barrier, trailers are not allowed on the site and some items cannot be accepted, including tyres, plasterboard, rubble and hardcore. Full details are on the council website.

Court Players serve up a treat

THE Court Players production of “Blood Brothers” (Play Version) by Willy Russell – Memorial Hall Rangeworthy, 15th to 17th October 2015. Review by Louis Richards. Although the play version of Willy Russell’s “Blood Brothers” is not seen as much by the general public as it’s daughter the musical – some students do however, study it as part of their GCSE English Literature syllabus – it is pretty much the same except for the twenty or so songs of course. The lack of musical numbers allows the play to be both sinister and thoughtprovoking, with the themes of fate and fortune having a constant presence. A solo violin sets the haunting scene at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy for The Court Players to superbly capture the gripping and emotional tale of the twins who are separated at birth; grow up living different lives at either end of the social scale and then involved in a triangle of love, lies and loyalty

leading up to the tragic climax. Director Bryan Quinlan squeezed every ounce of tension, tenderness and trauma from the script and the actors performed excellently using a compact functional set with effective projection to deliver an extremely credible production which didn’t leave a dry eye in the house. David Churchley and Mark Gregory are well matched as the fateful and contrasting twins Mickey and Eddie. We see them grow in convincing style from naïve seven year olds, through frustrated adolescences to angry and well off adults with two faultless performances. Gill Cope, as Mrs Johnstone, gives an excellent account of herself; with her characterisation of the gritty working-class, single mother from the Council Estate while Jackie Ross gives a sensitive portrayal of the troubled and manipulative wealthy Mrs Lyons. Aileen Bailey as the Narrator provides a sinister figure

Got News? Call Richard 0n 01454 800 120

representing fate, who stalks the characters, reminding them of their haunting secret. A final mention must go to Hannah Lewis for her role as “Linda”, who finds herself as the rope in a game of tug o’ war between the two brothers and making up the fateful love triangle. We see her transformed from cheeky juvenile to long-suffering wife who proved the ideal foil for both the boys.

11

The cast has brilliant chemistry and worked well together, keeping the audience hooked right up to the dramatic conclusion. The Court Players next production is “Panic Stations”; a comedy by Derek Benfield and will be performed on 25th to 27th February 2016 at The Memorial Hall, Rangeworthy. FREE flying scholarships are being offered to youngsters who want to become glider pilots. The Bristol and Gloucestershire Gliding Club is running the scheme for anyone aged 14-16 who wants to learn to fly the aircraft at its 100-acre airfield in Nympsfield. Training provided by the 70-year-old club can lead towards a light aircraft pilot’s licence, with lessons to be run from March to September. Bernard Smyth, the Yatebased spokesman for the club, said the sponsored junior cadet scheme had been operating since 2012, providing free flying training to solo standard. So far it has had a 100 per cent success rate, with many cadets continuing to higher qualifications once being able to fly solo, including in crosscountry and aerobatic flying. No formal qualifications are required in order to apply for a scholarship, apart from

Stamp of approval for fund raising efforts to find cure for eye disease LOCAL co-ordinators for a charity that fights blindness have thanked supporters of a used stamps appeal. Ron and Gina Pritchard said the appeal was proving a success, with money raised going to the organisation RP Fighting Blindness for research into the disease retinitis pigmentosa. The condition, known as RP, leads to loss of vision and blindness and the charity hopes that a treatment or cure will be found for those affected – some 25,000 people in the UK alone. Ron and Gina asked for stamps to be cut along with some of the surrounding envelope, which gives them more value, and sent to them at 22 Huckford Road, Winterbourne, Bristol, BS36 1EA. All will be sold on to stamp dealers. They said: “Whether entire collections or individual stamps, British or foreign, franked or not, we would really appreciate your donations, as every little helps. “Recently we attended a patient information day with several very eminent professors and doctors. The message was one of exciting times as there are clinical trials progressing to treatments for the very first time. “With people’s kind help we can continue to help fund these ground breaking projects.” Ron and Gina also give talks to local groups about RP and any organisation interested should contact them on 01454 772927.

craft markets

A SERIES of craft fairs will be held in Yate Shopping Centre in the weeks running up to Christmas. They will be run by Home Crafters – a group of people from the Chipping Sodbury area who make a range of items and sell their goods online. But they also host a number of fairs so people can see the products and produce they make. A Christmas market staged by the Home Crafters members for the first time at the shopping centre last year was such a success that it was agreed to repeat it. Organiser Kirsty Bevan said: “Yate Shopping Centre is an ideal location as it gives us exposure to so many shoppers. “Our artisans and crafters offer a lot of variety that is not found in the usual shops, with the majority of items hand-made, one-off pieces. “In addition we hope our showcase will encourage other people to join us in displaying their produce and products at future events as we are always looking for new members.” The markets will be open from 10am-4pm in unit 6-8 North Walk on November 14 and 28, December 5, 12 and 19. Other dates may be added later. Shopping centre manager Andrew Lowrey, said: “We are always pleased to support local talent and flair. Home Crafters proved a very popular attraction on its debut last year.”

On the road to top award for Frampton Cotterell bridge

FRAMPTON Cotterell’s new bridge over the river Frome in Church Road has won a top award. The innovative reconstruction project involved replacing a crumbling old bridge with one made from advanced composite materials, making it cheaper to maintain, stronger and more resistant to corrosion. The structure is one of the first bridges in the UK to be made from layers of glass and carbon fibres bound together with a tough resin, in a process usually associated with the manufacture of advanced passenger aircraft. Now it has received a Prime Minister’s Better Building Award, which was presented at the British Construction Industry Awards ceremony in London. The bridge was nominated in the category of Civil Engineering Project of the Year for schemes costing up to £10 million. It cost £250,000 to knock

down the old, deteriorating structure and put the prefabricated bridge deck in its

November, 2015 E: richard@fromevalleyvoice.co.uk He said the materials used were resistant to frost, extreme temperatures and de-icing salts that could cause problems in steel and concrete bridges. It will require no painting or waterproofing and it is estimated that could reduce the bridge’s maintenance costs by up to 35 per cent over its 120-year lifetime. The composite materials used are also lighter than those found in conventional methods, allowing the structure to be installed in roughly half the time of a standard bridge. That cut the time Church Road was closed for the work to be completed, reducing disruption for local residents and

businesses. Council leader Matthew Riddle said: “It’s great to see innovation in South Gloucestershire recognised at a national level. “The hi-tech bridge was assembled at the National Composites Centre in Emersons Green before being transported in one piece to Frampton Cotterell for installation. “That was a feat of engineering in itself and I would like to thank officers for all their hard work on this award-winning project.” The scheme was completed with engineers Atkins, specialists at CTS Bridges and projects firm Sinclair Knight Merz.

November, 2015 E: richard@fromevalleyvoice.co.uk CHANGES to the Sainsbury’s store in Emersons Green are proving controversial. The supermarket closed for a week for a revamp so it could be turned into one of six locations to try out a new style of shopping. But dozens of customers have taken to social media to complain that the range of food on sale has been drastically reduced. Shoppers claim that up to 5,000 lines have been removed so that more space can be given over to clothing and consumer goods. Items no longer available include cornflour and Basics fruit juice while the choice of staples such as pasta, bread and frozen food have been cut, they say. Frome Valley Voice asked Sainsbury’s how many lines had been taken out but the chain declined to say. Other complaints included the siting of the pharmacy in the far corner, which makes it difficult to access for people who are infirm, and the “illogical” layout. A do-it-yourself bread slicer also came in for criticism. The new layout includes moving the sandwiches from by the entrance to the centre of the store, increasing the space for clothes on the left, putting the freezers in the middle and creating space for phones and tablets on the far side. The revamp also provides a self scanning system, but this is not yet operational. Customers voiced their concerns on Facebook and Twitter, with more than 40 individual comments being passed to store managers. In response to questions about the number of food lines, whether customers had been consulted, and whether the company would act on shoppers’ concerns, Sainsbury’s told the Voice: “Emersons Green store is one of six across the country that has been chosen to test out a number of innovations that we hope will give customers more choice and make shopping more pleasant, easier and quicker for them. For example, the Food to Go section is now at the front of the store nearer the checkouts, for people who want to buy a quick bite to eat. That’s why we’ve put the bakery at the front too - we’re getting great feedback about the revamped bakery, especially the patisserie section, with its

enhanced range; the cakes baked in-store are selling like…..hot cakes! “For customers who want take more time to browse and get inspiration for home and technology purchases, we’ve improved those areas too, with more space, improved choice and trained colleagues on hand to help customers with their purchases. And Emersons Green store now has the full Tu clothing range for women, men and children and this is proving to be really popular with our customers. Interestingly, the feedback we’ve had from customers about the relocation of the pharmacy has been very positive – they prefer the privacy that the new location gives them. “Overall, the vast majority of customers tell us that they want to pay as quickly as possible, which is why there are more checkout options to suit customers with baskets and those with small or large trolleys. “The important thing is we want to get it right for our customers. We’re listening to them about what works and also what doesn’t work in their store.”

New library in Rangeworthy with help from Rotarians A NEW library has been opened at Rangeworthy Primary School with the help of Yate and Chipping Sodbury Rotary clubs. They each gave £500 towards

the £2,500 project, which involved transforming an old storeroom into the school’s new facility. As well as books, there is also

new equipment and furniture, a computer area and seated work section. Head teacher Janet Dickson said: “Before the new library opened, the children couldn’t really access the books as the storeroom wasn’t organised like a library.

“Now they are all organised in categories and children can come in and look up books and make their choice. It has been quite a major project.” John Berridge, of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club, said: “It is really impressive to see a school take such a good initiative.”

Bowls hotshots roll back the years IS there something in the water at Begbrook Green Bowling Club? After bringing you news last month of the club’s president Reg Buston, 99 years young and still playing, we now hear that another of the club’s hotshots is John King, who bowls regularly at the age of 95. The three other members of the club’s team are mere spring chickens: Mike Hazell, at number 2 is 77, Maurice Batson at number 3 is 74, as is skipper Alan Dawes, number 4. They reckon this makes the average age of the rink 80 – and are wondering if this is a record. A hotshot is where a maximum score of eight shots is achieved at one end in pairs or fours. It is rare – akin to a hole in one in golf. Reg, who was a founder member of the club in 1994, captain in the 1998-99 season and president since 2000, already has the hotshot certificate, awarded in recognition of the achievement. He presented the certificates to the team, including John, who is also a founder member and is proud of the fact that he holds

Reg Buston presents hotshot certificates to Mike Hazell, Alan Dawes, John King, and Maurice Batson the unofficial ‘toucher’ record in the club with a total of 14 in a match. Begbrook Green is a thriving mixed club, which welcomes

members of all ages, both beginners and experienced players. It started with 35 members and now has 80. Alan Dawes told us: “I

personally can vouch for how fast he could run when he caught me playing knockout ginger and gave me a clip around my ear - circa 1952-53!”

Around the W.I. Winterbourne Evening WI A VERY enjoyable visit to the Wyke Cheese Making Farm in Somerset proved entertaining as well as informative. We discovered that the plant is totally green, even making its own electricity using, as well as other things, the manure from 7000 pigs and from the cattle on four Wyke owned farms. We sampled cheeses and discovered Wyke butter. On

the way home we stopped for a wonderful fish and chip lunch in Shepton Mallett. A lot of members visited the craft exhibition at the M shed in Bristol. The Annual Meeting at Thornbury was enjoyed by all who went, although it was agreed the venue did not have the presence of The Winter Gardens. Our meeting in October was also not to be missed; no cocktails like we had at

our September centenary celebration, but this was our own 59th birthday and so we had a big cake with our name on. We also enjoyed the harvest produce stall where produce ranging from cucumbers to peaches and onions to apples, plus tins and jars encouraged members to buy. The big fun for the evening however, was learning how to fold napkins - not the floppy paper ones that you get nowadays but cotton or linen, preferably starched. Two members led the instructions

and one or two talented craft people in the room were able to follow immediately. In the end we learnt to make napkins look like candles, bishop’s mitres, rosebuds, a crown and even a bird of paradise. Most agreed they could produce these for a special family occasion or at Christmas. The next event to look forward to is the meeting of the Frome Valley Group, when we will enjoy meeting up with colleagues from other WI’s and having a ‘high tea’. The theme for the evening is Suffragettes

and there will be banners and sashes on show. Our meetings are held at St Michaels Room, High Street, Winterbourne, the 2nd Thursday in the month at 7.30, new members and visitors are always welcome. Coalpit Heath WI WE were delighted to welcome Myriam from Beauty Plus to our October meeting for a talk and demonstrations on top to toe beauty. It was a very inclusive demonstration with Myriam getting us all to exercise in our chairs; the facial exercises must have been very funny to anyone watching from outside. Emma offered herself as a human guinea pig and was delighted with the pedicure. Myriam very kindly gave us vouchers and there here was also a raffle for Paul’s Place – thank you Myriam for a fabulous evening. Our thoughts then turned to Christmas, and our annual Christmas meal – this year to be held at the Bell in Chipping Sodbury on Thursday 10th December. There will also be a Christmas lunch with venue

and dates to be advised. Marcia Caple is organising this year’s hamper so ladies please bring your goodies to the November meeting. Staying on the theme of Christmas, Operation Christmas Child boxes will also be collected at the November AGM. The ladies at Knit and Natter will also be joining with us for this worthwhile cause, that brings some happiness to children in very unfortunate circumstances. 27th November the date for our trip to Salisbury Christmas Market kindly organised by Jennie Mitchell. Coalpit Heath WI are also having a stall at St Saviours Christmas Fayre to support the Church (which was 170 years old in October). We had a very nice thank you letter from the children at Manor school for their book tokens – kids you are very welcome and keep up the reading. Another date for the diary is December 16th for our annual Carol Service, everyone is welcome so please do join us and help us raise funds for St Peter’s Hospice.

We were very pleased to welcome a new member Joyce Cottingham. Our meeting was however tinged with some sadness as we had to say goodbye to Angie Allinson after a long and brave battle with illness. Angie will always be fondly remembered by all her friends, as such a kind and generous lady who always had a smile for everyone. You will always be in our thoughts dear Angie. Frampton Cotterell WI Our October meeting, centred around a very interesting talk on the early history of Penguin Books by Barry Edwards. Barry’s talk focussed on the introduction of Penguin paperback books back in 1935 by the founder, Sir Alan Lane, who was actually brought up and went to school in Bristol. The aim was to provide intelligent reading for all, hence the introductory price of 6d (5p) a copy, when hard back books at the time cost an average of at least seven times that price. The main retail outlets were Woolworths stores and main line railways stations - and by 1960, whilst the cover price was up to 1 shilling and 6d, the books were as popular as ever, as testified by the publication of the infamous “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” which sold over 3 millions copies in the first year it came out. For November we have a skittles evening with American supper to be held at Fromeside Community Hall, Winterbourne on Thursday 12th November. Frampton Cotterell’s AGM will take place on Tuesday November the 24th - this will include a round up of the year’s activity’s and the nominations for next year’s WI committee, before voluntary roles are allocated later on. This will be followed by wine and nibbles and a Christmas craft stall selling items from cards and pens through to jewellery and festive decorations made by our own very talented craft expert, Kathryn Smeaton. December will be as eventful as ever with the annual Avon Federation WI carol service taking place at St. Mary Redcliffe on the 15th December. The December meeting will be held on the 8th at Crossbow house where we’ll be enjoying a Bingo evening with a bar and festive treats, and on the 22nd

29

December, members will gather for the traditional carols and mince pies get-together at one of our member’s homes. The book club Christmas dinner will be held at one of our local pubs early in in the month. Our WI is also publishing a special cookery book containing members’ favourite recipes which will be due out well in time for the festive season - look for that at local venues, stores and at the annual Christmas Tree display at St. Peters Church. The new programme of talks and events for the new year will be announced shortly on our Facebook page. Visitors are always welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Visitors are charged at £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee. We also have a number of special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our skittles and darts teams. Please do look out for details for these and other meetings, social events etc. on our Facebook page – just search FramptonCottWI and like our page! Winterbourne Down WI Our Speaker for the last meeting was Mark Steeds and he spoke passionately about Pirates and Privateers out of Bristol. He showed us early maps of “Brigstow’s” boundaries and rivers Frome and Avon running round it. In 1240 Bristol was redeveloped by altering the flow of the rivers and building bridges, making it a better port for trading. We were shown a slide of the Avon Gorge, minus the Suspension Bridge, which made the scene look very bare without this iconic feature. We were told and shown maps, charts, pictures and sketches of various merchants and their ships. We were also told of how successful they had been in trading all over the world and exploring to find new countries. Mark and his colleagues are at present working on a Treasure Island Trail around Bristol. Our meeting in November is the AGM when new Officers will be elected and on 3rd December The Steve Price Duo will be entertaining us.

Youth offending Shopmobility appoints new chairwoman as service praised scheme continues to seek urgent funding by probation inspectors INSPECTORS have praised South Gloucestershire staff who work with young offenders to help them stay out of trouble. HM Inspectorate of Probation said members of the youth offending team produced “excellent” work overall to reduce re-offending, protect the public, keep children and young people safe and ensure that sentences were served. A report produced after a so-called short quality screening of the service said staff were skilled, had a good knowledge of those they worked with and were ably supported by effective managers. It said: “Overall, case managers had developed strong and purposeful relationships with the children and young people they were supervising. The knowledge they had of these children and young people was exceptional. “We found that case managers were enthusiastic, dedicated, well-trained and skilled.” The inspectors said recent data for the district showed one in three re-offended – marginally worse than the previous year but better than the 37.4 per cent average for England and Wales – and recommended where further strengthening of the service could be carried out.

A NEW chairwoman has been appointed by the Shopmobility scheme in Yate as the organisation continues to look for vital cash support. It is facing an uncertain future due to National Lottery funding coming to an end and needs to attract more money if it is to continue to run its successful service. As recently reported by Yate and Sodbury Voice, Shopmobility has been running since 2006 in Yate Shopping Centre. People with mobility problems can hire a batterypowered scooter or a wheelchair, giving them independence to visit shops and use other facilities in the complex. Wheelchairs are also available for longer term loan.

At its recent annual general meeting, Martin Monk stepped down as chairman after many years in the role, with Councillor Janet Biggin elected to replace him. Mr Monk will, however, continue as a trustee of Shopmobility South Gloucestershire. Vice-chairman David Bell said: “Janet brings great experience in local government and in the health service. “Martin has been involved in Shopmobility for many years and he has been vital in Shopmobilty’s great success.” During its time, the scheme has been helped with grants from a number of organisations, such as local councils, as well as donations. Shopmobility project worker

Sheridan Crew said: “South Gloucestershire Council has given some very important funding but it is not enough to ensure that the scheme can continue at current levels of service. “Shopmobility has proved immensely popular and successful as it has enrolled many active users, who benefit greatly from its service.” The scheme’s office is open from Tuesdays to Fridays from 9.30am-4pm and on Thursdays and Saturdays from 9.30am2pm. For information about the service either email shopmobilitysouthglos@yahoo. com or phone 01454 868718 or 07999 574474.

Faster return home for hospital patients HOSPITAL patients from South Gloucestershire are being helped to return home sooner as the result of an innovative service. Until now, routine assessments carried out to establish someone’s care needs after a stay at Southmead Hospital have been completed while they are still an in-patient. Now community healthcare teams will provide assessments for people in their own homes on the day they are discharged. That will allow them to return home as soon as they are no longer in need of hospital care.

The service has been launched by the local NHS and social services. Sirona Care and Health will continue to support patients as necessary in the days after being discharged, working with South Gloucestershire Council to arrange social work assessments and ongoing care if required. For patients, it means getting home quicker to recuperate in familiar surroundings and being less at risk from secondary complications that can be associated with longer hospital stays. For the NHS, there will be a better flow of patients

through Southmead Hospital by ensuring individuals are discharged as soon as they are clinically fit to leave. Dr Ann Sephton, clinical lead for urgent care at NHS South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Few people want to stay in hospital once they have been declared fit for discharge and with this service, we’re ensuring they can leave as soon as they’re ready to go. “That’s good for patients but it’s also good for the wider NHS as it frees up beds for people who do require acute hospital care.”

Discover The Great British Bistro at The Kendleshire, fine fresh dining on your doorstep! Autumn is one of the most exciting times for fresh produce, and The Kendleshire’s Head Chef Richard Guest is glowing with enthusiasm. For a long time visitors to the golf club have enjoyed superb food, and since last summer Rich has turned Friday evenings into the ‘Great British Bistro’. Hosted in the Garden Room overlooking the 18th green and golf course beyond, with al fresco options through the summer evenings, the Bistro has joined the wide range of good local eateries open and welcoming to everyone. Always looking for the finest ingredients, best suppliers and most enjoyable dishes, Rich and his team recently started working with a award-winning new butcher who supplies the likes of Raymond Blanc and Heston Blumenthal.

HUNDREDS of runners are expected to take up the annual Sodbury Slog challenge over nine miles of tough terrain. The cross-country race often attracts more than 1,300 entrants, who are tested along a route that starts and ends at Chipping Sodbury School. Coinciding with Remembrance Sunday, runners and organisers will observe a two-minute silence before the event gets under way at 11.05am on November 8. The race, organised by Bitton Road Runners, dates back to 1990 and was initially known as

the Beagle Bash. The name was changed about nine years later, with the route that goes over mostly private land remaining virtually unchanged since being launched, taking in hills, boggy fields and water-filled ditches along the way. Each year runners also raise thousands of pounds for local and national charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support. Anyone interested in taking part should visit www. sodburyslog.co.uk for more details.

Seeking out the most delicious cuts of meat, with an eye on value-for-money, their search rounded on a rump loin - perhaps not the first choice of cut. This is then slow-cooked for two hours in a process called ‘sous vide’ by Rich and his team, before being pan-fried in butter and thyme. Served medium, and perfect with mashed potato, roasted heritage carrots and a red wine sauce. The finished result is, you will have to trust me, delicious, and through a combination of careful sourcing and these new cooking methods means the bill doesn’t break the bank either. Enthusing about his growing and successful baby, Rich says “I am a creature of habit and tend to eat in the same places, but food needs to be exciting so I change the menu for the Great British Bistro every Friday. I want my guests to be as excited about the produce as myself and my team, and at the same time to wonder what treats may be on offer”. Fish dishes are always good at The Kendleshire, wish an excellent local fishmonger providing the likes of sea bream, cod, clams and mackerel, all from off the south coast - as one customer put it, “so fresh it’s as if it’s just come out of the water!”. So the next time you fancy a candle-lit Friday evening eating out with great food at good prices, think of The Kendleshire. Table reservations are available from 6pm onwards, and can be made either in person at the clubhouse, or by phone on 0117 956 7007.

Let’s talk about posture

by physiotherapist Craig from the Willow Brook Clinic

G

OOD posture is an essential ingredient to keep you looking youthful as the years go by. Standing tall is a free and simple way of looking younger – naturally. A stooped posture could be as a result of mechanical strain on the spine or muscles due to age, stress, adaptation or simply not being aware of the need to hold your head up. Incorrect carrying of heavy bags or backpacks can also affect the shape of your body. Here are some tips to keep you standing tall at any age. Now that many of us spend much of our days hunched in front of a computer, or on a mobile phone, it is very important for us to be able to stretch and open up and improve our range of motion. To stay agile, try to get up for a couple minutes every half hour and stretch, walk, or stand. When you do have to work at a desk, sitting up with good, tall posture and your shoulders dropped is a good habit to get into. This can take some getting used to and may feel uncomfortable

to begin with. Make sure your workstation is set up to promote proper posture. Your core muscles form the foundation of good posture, and a strong core can have many other benefits, from improving your athletic performance to enhancing your general wellbeing. As we age, the muscles around our spine weaken, putting more strain on our bodies. Exercises targeting the back extensors, neck flexors, pelvic muscles, and side muscles are crucial. Aim to work on the muscles that will improve your core stability and support your spine. There are some simple and effective exercises that you can do to improve your posture – no need for a gym membership or an extreme daily routine. Why reliving glory days is good for you REMINISCENCES of past glories on the cricket pitch have been in the air this autumn to mark the centenary of the death of WG Grace. The amazing exploits of the Downend-born bearded giant are not within living memory but his legacy has remained strong down the decades as local heroes have taken wickets and catches and notched up centuries at the ground that bears his name. So it’s fitting that Downend has been chosen as the latest venue for the launch of a Sporting Memories group, where volunteers can share their recollections of favourite matches. Of course, it’s not restricted to England’s traditional summer sport – there’s the opportunity for endless re-telling of the glories (or otherwise) of Bristol Rovers and City, Bristol Rugby, and local sides too. Sporting Memories Network is a social enterprise that promotes wellbeing through the sharing of sports reminiscences. It supports the formation of groups of older people who get together to talk about sport. Founder director Chris Wilkins said the project had proven benefits for mind and body. The groups are dementia friendly, but are by no means only for people with memory problems or cognitive issues. Mr Wilkins, who was at the recent Downend Connect event to promote the planned group, aims for it to meet weekly at Downend Library and is hoping it can start in the new year. But if it is to get off the ground it needs volunteers. Obviously, the prime

33

Looking back at memorable sporting moments alongside volunteers helps older people make connections qualification is an interest in sport, but there are other roles too. Anyone with research skills or just an interest in listening to people’s stories would be welcomed. Sporting Memories already has groups in Yate and Easton and has run successful intergenerational projects in Bristol involving school children. Its next training session is at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club on November 5. To find out more, visit the website at www.sportingmemoriesnetwork. com and if you’d like to get involved, contact Mr Wilkins on 07765 864484 or email chris@ sportingmemoriesnetwork.com

Local infrastructure

D

Luke Hall MP

fromevalleyvoice www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk

URING my election campaign, one of my key pledges was to work to improve the infrastructure in South Gloucestershire. I spent a lot of time canvassing local people and asking residents for their views on what is important and where improvements can be made. Time and again, Improvements to infrastructure kept coming up. Over the next 10 years, it is anticipated that 7,000 new jobs will be created in the area, which will create a massive boost for the West of England’s economy and especially the economy of our constituency and local area. Coupled with the 28,000 new homes that are planned under South Gloucestershire Council’s Strategic Development Plan, there will be significant demands made on our already struggling infrastructure. Now, after years of campaigning, South Gloucestershire Council is spending £80,000 on a feasibility study to look into the installation of a new junction 18a onto the M4. The new junction has been on the agenda for years but the current increase in development in the area means that the need

for Junction 18A is becoming more pressing than ever before. I have asked that the government consider this proposal as a longterm investment in a thriving part of the country. The proposed Junction 18A would address increasing residential and commercial demands being placed on South Gloucestershire, which is already experiencing significant growth. It would not only tackle congestion, but would play a major role in connecting local businesses, boosting regional and national trade, and helping to reduce unemployment. The current M4 junction adds to congestion, slows journey times, and encourages drivers to take alternate routes through the villages of Pucklechurch and Hinton. I think this dissuades local people from cycling or walking, and the local environment is subject to more pollution. A reduction in traffic through local villages would encourage more residents to cycle, thus contributing to climate targets, if they feel the area is safer and less busy with traffic. I also believe this proposal will significantly reduce journey times into Bristol for many local people, improving access to the M4 and reducing the traffic

37

burden on the villages that are affected by the growing population. The initiative has received support from regional businesses and the launch in the House of Commons was attended by more than 80 stakeholders including several of the South West MP’s and the Minister for Transport. I debated the proposed junction 18a in parliament earlier this year. Andrew Jones, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Transport, believes the case for the junction is a very strong one and that it was “exactly the type of scheme” that could be included in the second round of the Road Investment Strategy. I have also written to local businesses explaining the benefits of the junction and held an event in parliament. If we want our infrastructure to match our ambition, this should be seen as a vital part of the future of South Gloucestershire. Hundreds of people and local businesses have already signed the petition calling for investment in these critical road improvements for the area. There is still time to show your support and sign the petition, which can be found at www.lukehall.org.uk.

Illuminating results from new street lighting

Work under way on new town hall WORK is under way on the new Emersons Green Town Hall, which is due to open next spring. The £200,000 building will be a focal point for the growing community. It is sited on land owned by the council behind the Beefeater pub car park off Westerleigh Road. The town hall will be a venue for meetings and events and provide information for residents on both sides of Emersons Green and in the new Lyde Green development. A significant part of the money for the single-storey building has come from the New Homes Bonus fund. Councillor Rich Nicholls, the mayor of Emersons Green,

said the project was a significant opportunity for the council. He performed a turf-cutting ceremony for the building, , watched by project manager and architect Paul Maddox, town council clerk Beverley Ewens and Kim Richings, contract manager from Helm

39

Construction, which is carrying out the building work. Mr Richings said: “We have been increasingly active across South Gloucestershire and are thrilled to have been appointed by the council to carry out this project.”

NEW street lighting being rolled out across South Gloucestershire is saving even more money and carbon emissions than expected. Lights on a number of A-roads in places such as Chipping Sodbury, Coalpit Heath and Yate have already been replaced with the state-of-the-art LED street lighting. In the past 18 months, some 4,000 of the lights have been installed, saving around £257,000 from South Gloucestershire Council’s electricity bill and cutting carbon emissions by 1,153 tonnes. Eventually a total of 30,000 lanterns will be replaced with the aim of saving 60 per cent of the annual cost of energy and carbon emissions. New technology is also being fitted to street lamps to allow the council to more accurately control light levels and lighting up times, using innovative GPS technology.

Twirlers hit the heights IT was third time lucky for the Yate Star Twirlers when they achieved a podium position at the European Majorette Championships. FRAMPTON 1st and 2nd teams approached October determined to secure some more wins and with training focussing on set plays which all were keen to put into practice. The 1st team came up against Chipping Sodbury, who have always been a tough opposition. Sodbury frustrated Frampton at times with their strong defence, but the team all pulled together. There were no weak links and all players were on top form, including the Frampton defence which won Joely Reed the opposition’s player of the match. The final score was 45-36, another fantastic win for the 1st’s. The 1st’s next game was against Bradley Stoke and they won it convincingly 31-19. All members of the team played very well and were consistent throughout the match. As a result of many interceptions and a fantastic effort from Jazz Bartlett (C, WA) she was awarded Bradley Stoke’s player of the match. Frampton’s versatility was demonstrated by Emily Dible (GS, C), something recognised by her team mates as she was

Netballers continue strong start to season awarded Frampton’s player of the match. Her skill and overall performance positively changed the pace and flow of the game. Next up for the 1st’s was an eventful match against Phoenix 2. Tactical play and great team work resulted in an impressive win for the team - the final score 52-14 - their third win in a row. During the first few minutes of the first quarter minor mistakes stilted the game slightly, however as play settled Frampton began to take the lead. Joely Reed (GK), Carol Rowson (GD) and Helen (WD) made brilliant interceptions and, along with tight marking, made it extremely difficult for Phoenix’s attacking players to keep possession of the ball. Throughout the second quarter Frampton’s lead increased. Jazz Bartlett (C) and Jess Leak (WA) fed precise, quick balls into the shooting circle

enabling the shooters Emily Harris (GS) and Emily Dible (GA) to score. Emily Dible was voted Player of the match by the opposition and Frampton for the second game in a row. The 2nd team were keen to retain their unbeaten run and came out strongly against Bristol and West. The quick turnovers from Bristol and Wests centre’s, combined with the fantastic defence meant that they trailed from the start. The Frampton defence remained incredibly strong and consistent throughout the game, with Mel Eke in GD/ GK being voted as Player of the Match from both Frampton and the opposition. The sharp shooting from Lucy Jones and Camilla Smith meant that the team secured another impressive win with the final score being 26-14. Frampton’s 2nd team then faced Bradley Stoke, who

had also been promoted last season. They were a very young team who unnerved Frampton slightly at the start of the game. The experience of Frampton enabled them to take control of the game and play at their own pace. Jo Slee and Anna Keir in the centre court, paced the game well and fed in good balls to the shooters. The team played well in the D, in both defence and attack. Sally Harding moved around the D quickly, beating the opposition defence and shooting with precision. This earned her Bradley Stoke’s Player of the Match. Haylie Poole, enjoying her new position as GK/GD, was voted Frampton’s Player of the Match for her tenacity in defence. The continued good form has put both teams at 3rd place in their leagues, the 2nd’s with one game in hand.

THERE were mixed fortunes for the 1st team in October but they still are in touch of the leaders and in to the 3rd round of the GFA Cup, Adam Taylor reports. The month started with a home game against local rivals Pucklechurch which is normally a tasty affair, on this occasion we never turned up and Pucklechurch ran out worthy 3-0 winners. We followed this up with a shocking performance away to Bradley Stoke. Following Luke Haddow’s early equaliser we found ourselves 7-1 down with just an hour gone. Somehow we responded and goals from Jonny Ruff, Charlie Lacey and a brace from Ross Davey brought us back to 7-5. An unlikely comeback seemed on the cards but it was too little too late. We bounced back with a comfortable 4-1 home win over local rivals Rangeworthy, with

Iron Acton still in contention a brace from Charlie Lacey and Ben Ingram doing the damage. Next up was another local derby against Chipping Sodbury Reserves. After missing countless chances we soon found ourselves 2-0 down, but top scorer Jonny Ruff rescued a point with two second half penalties. Round two of the cup saw us drawn at home to Wick, and after going 1-0 up through Jonny Ruff we were facing an early cup exit when we were 2-1 down with 5 minutes to go. However, Jonny Ruff scrambled the ball over the line to make it 2-2. In injury time we took the lead through Yame Aibangbee, but there was still there was time for a Wick equaliser and penalties were required. Jonny Ruff, Danny Ruff, Luke Haddow, Stu Banwell and

Tommy Hunn were all successful from the spot and saw us safely into the next round. A shocking month for Frampton FRAMPTON Athletic suffered a poor month of results throughout October, which saw them drop points on the league leaders, AEK Boco, whilst also dropping out of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup and the League Cup too. Frampton’s only point for the month came early on, as they suffered a stalemate 0-0 at home to Hambrook. This was followed up by a defeat at home to Shaftesbury Crusade, then back-to-back cup defeats against Stoke Gifford United (GFA Cup) and Shaftesbury Crusade (League Cup) respectively. Manager Adrian Pell will be looking to get back to winnings ways in November, when he hopes to have a number of players back from injury, most of whom have missed all the games in October. This could prove crucial, as they face some tough opposition in the form of Lawrence Rovers,

Roman Glass St George Reserves and Talbot Knowle United. Frampton’s Reserve side fared slightly better in October and started the month with two good wins – a 4-2 home win over Fry’s Club ‘A’ and a hard-fought 1-0 away win over Nicholas Wanderers. Unfortunately, they were unable to continue their winning streak, as they were outclassed against a strong AEK Boco side, then outmuscled against a physical Port of Bristol side, before being outrun against a young and pacey Cribbs ‘A’ side in the second round of the GFA Junior Cup. The Reserves only have 1 game scheduled for November, which is an away fixture against Soundwell Victoria – a game that Frampton should be looking to take all 3 points from. October was a very quiet and frustrating month for Frampton’s third side. After back

to back battering’s - 10-3 against Mendip Broadwalk and 6-0 defeat against a young and classy Cribbs ‘B’ side - the ‘A’s saw their GFA Cup game against Soundwell Victoria Reserves called off as Soundwell didn’t realise that they had entered themselves into the cup! Their next league game against Lawrence Rovers Reserves was then also called off at the last minute due to Lawrence Rovers first team being drawn at home in the cup and Lawrence Rovers were unwilling to reverse the fixture, as their players had planned to watch Bristol City instead! The ‘A’s will hope to get some football played in November, as they look to lift themselves off the bottom of the table, with games scheduled against Soundwell Victoria Reserves, Crosscourt United and Rangeworthy Reserves.

MEMBERS of Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club have enjoyed a day at Twickenham as a reward for their efforts in getting people to play rugby again. They watched the crucial Rugby World Cup game against Australia . The day was hosted by England 2003 Rugby World Cup winner and former England Captain Lewis Moody, who headed up the Return to Rugby campaign that took place during the World Cup . Pete Zaffiro, Mike Weaver, John Britton and Joe Cleary have been part of a hugely successful campaign that saw Frampton fourth out of fifty clubs in England for players signed up . Pete and Mike were lucky enough to be chosen to attend the match on behalf of the club. Pete said; “It was a great day

On this occasion he was no match for Lewis’s winning World cup 2003 stories and England memories”. The club would still love to hear from players interested in coming back to rugby. Sport England funding gives people the chance to get active in Yate A NEW scheme aimed at encouraging more people in Yate to become active has been given the goahead. The SportsPound project has been backed to the tune of £171,324 by Sport England and will be based in each of South Gloucestershire’s six priority neighbourhoods, including Yate. It is due to be launched in early 2016 and last for three years, with South Gloucestershire Council running it in conjunction with leisure centres and sports clubs.

Got News? Call Richard 0n 01454 800 120

The SportsPound will be in the form of free vouchers that can be exchanged for a variety of sports sessions, covering activities from aquarobics to zumba. A team of “activators” will be based in each of the priority neighbourhoods to create sports sessions that meet the needs of those who will benefit from the project. They will also give out SportsPound vouchers to those who are new to sport or want to return after a break. The scheme is based on a successful pilot recently held in Filton, which led to the starting of new netball sessions and

people having a go at aquarobics, women’s fitness classes and bowls for the first time. South Gloucestershire Council chairwoman, Erica Williams, said it was hoped to inspire more than 5,000 people to give a sport a go during the three years. She said: “This project will help raise the profile of local sport and ensure residents are involved in developing activities which work for them.” More details are available on the council’s website or by phoning 01454 865821.

Frampton excel away from home A 5 point victory away to Bream was exactly what Frampton needed after losing at home to Berry Hill 36-16. A strong gale and wet conditions dictated the play in the first half, with both teams using their forwards good effect. Frampton were dominant at scrum time with Joe Cleary hooking the ball against the head on a number of occasions. Even with the dominance at the scrum, Frampton only had one opportunity to score which scrum half Dan Spalding took, showing his strength and class to brush off four Bream players to dive over the line, This was converted by James Knight. The first half finished 6-7 to Frampton. With the weather brightening up Frampton showed their class and experience to weather the attack of Bream in the first ten minutes of the second half and then ran in 4 more tries from Callum Bleakman, Matt Lawrence and two from James Knight. Man of the match went to Alex Moore for his strong performance in the loose and exceptional scrummaging skills, although there were standout performances from the front five for Frampton who dominated the Bream side through out the game. The next match for Frampton is Cheltenham Saracens at home on the 7th November.

Ever Fancied Playing Rugby? Frampton could be the place for you A YOUNG golfer is celebrating after achieving a feat that many players never achieve. 13 year old Bethany Curry managed a hole in one on the 6th hole at a special event organised by the Windmill Golf Academy. Bethany has been taking part in the Academy’s Get into Golf programme and managed the hole in one at a special event at Thornbury Golf Club.
