Lottery fund gives cash boost for major medieval barn scheme A GRANT from the Heritage Lottery Fund has boosted plans for refurbishment of Winterbourne’s historically important medieval barn. The £165,000 is set to be a precursor to a much bigger award from the fund (HLF) to help pay the estimated £1.645 million cost of the scheme. South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the barn, is also contributing to the project and the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust has to show it can raise £400,000 as its portion of the bill. The HLF grant is development funding to help those involved with the barn build up their proposal. Nerys Watts, head of the HLF in the South West, said: “Winterbourne is one of England’s great surviving medieval barns that can tell us a lot about the history and development of this area. “This investment will help develop plans to breathe new life into this historic building. We look forward to seeing how the project develops over the coming months.”

THE Co-operative store in Winterbourne is open again after it was damaged in a cash point attack. Thieves struck at around 3.30am on 5 May. The force of the explosion blew away much of the suspended ceiling inside the store and quantity of cash was taken. The ATM outside the Natwest Bank, around 50 metres away was also targeted. A car was seen leaving the area shortly afterwards. The Co-op was shut for almost a week as builders refurbished the store. A week later an ATM in Yate was targeted. The Tesco Express on Station Road was attacked in another early morning explosion which badly damaged the store.

AN important stage has been reached in a restoration scheme for Winterbourne’s medieval barn, with funding of £165,000 awarded from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The development funding will now allow South Gloucestershire Council, which owns the building, and the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust (WMBT) to press ahead with proposals to apply for further cash before December 2017. In total, an estimated £1.645 million is needed to refurbish the nationally important grade two* listed barn. In its first step approval, the lottery fund (HLF) endorsed outline proposals, meaning the scheme met its criteria for support. Occasionally the fund can award development funding
at that early stage, which is what it has done in Winterbourne’s case. But the trust and council hope the fund will eventually top its grant up to £1.045 million and they will now work on a full proposal to compete for a firm award. The council is also set to contribute £200,000 - with £35,000 of it for development costs - and the trust has to show by the end of next year that it can raise the remaining £400,000 needed. Built in 1342, the barn is a survivor of the medieval agrarian economy. It was commissioned by Thomas de Bradeston, who was lord of the manor of Winterbourne from 1328 until his death in 1360. It was once on an “at risk” register but was compulsorily purchased, with the council and trust now working towards restoring, refurbishing and finding new uses for the barn and associated outbuildings. It is planned to use it as a heritage education centre, to give information about the local area and provide space for a mix of community, educational and commercial uses. Sue Parsons, chairwoman of WMBT, said: “Release of the full HLF grant is dependent on the detailed proposals and confirmation of the business plan. “We also need to demonstrate the potential for use in heritage education and as a community asset. “During this important development phase, we would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in the project.”

Stamp of approval approaches for post office re-opening in North Road PUBLICANS Jenna Hale and Paul Jefferies will switch between pulling pints and selling stamps when a post office re-opens in North Road, Yate. A consultation exercise is currently running over plans to operate the service within a new convenience store behind the Codrington Arms. As long as there are no delays, it is hoped to have the enterprise up and running this summer, bringing the service back to that part of Yate and Iron Acton. North Road used to have a post office until it closed a year ago when the postmaster resigned and the premises could no longer be used for postal services. Jenna, who took over the running of the Codrington Arms with Paul in 2014, said they were approached by Post Office Ltd about accommodating the post
office on the pub site, leading to the start of a long process to allow that to happen. Consultation with local users runs until June 8 but it is anticipated there will be support for the move. Jenna said: “We were asked if we would like to apply and that application process took about six months. We’re now nearing the end of the whole process and hope to have the post office open at the end of July in a building behind the pub.” She said the new venture would fit in well with the pub due to the opening times proposed for the shop, which is set to operate every day, including Sunday mornings. Simon Drinkwater, area manager for Post Office Ltd, said: “A new operator has been appointed, providing us with the opportunity to incorporate post

Solar Farm is home to wildlife - and curious children A SOLAR farm between Coalpit Heath and Nibley is proving successful in another role - as an outdoor classroom. Says Court Farm is home to a large-scale solar installation covering around 90 acres and providing power for 4,000 homes. During the planning process, Westerleigh Parish Council secured a continuing fund for community benefits and some of this funding is being used by Avon Wildlife Trust. It has worked with Watermore Primary School in Frampton Cotterell, bringing year 5 and 6 pupils to the site. Both at the farm and back in the classroom, the pupils took part in curricular-linked programmes, tying in with science and

geography topics. They looked at subject such as looking as renewable technologies, the impact of the solar farm on the local environment, wildlife and community and different habitats at the solar farm, including hedgerows and recently sown wildflower meadows. The Trust is also monitoring the impact of the installation on the site’s species diversity; where measures are being implemented to plant trees, create barn owl corridors and wildflower meadows. Two boards have been designed and sit alongside a public footpath that runs along the east side of the solar farm. Further details about family

PEOPLE witnessing lorry drivers parking their vehicles on the road outside Sainsbury’s in Coalpit Heath instead of in a designated bay are being asked to report the incidents. Local councillor Claire Young said police had spoken to the manager of the store, who had reminded delivery drivers not to park on the road. But she said some lorries might be driven by people just stopping to buy something in the Badminton Road shop rather than making a delivery. At the time the store was being planned, developers had pledged to fund parking restrictions if problems emerged. Councillor Young said double yellow lines would have the effect of also stopping customers parking on the road, while a loading/unloading ban could deal with delivery vehicles but not lorry drivers pulling up to shop. It is hoped the scale of the problem will be better understood if incidents are reported to South Gloucestershire Council via Councillor Young, including times and dates and information about the reason for the parking.

Thousands of comments made on council’s proposed library cuts MORE than 3,000 comments on planned library cuts, which users fear could hit Winterbourne’s service, were made during a first round of consultation. South Gloucestershire Council is looking to save £650,000 from its library budget but those who use them are fighting to protect those libraries which could be affected. Winterbourne’s library in Flaxpits Lane could have its opening hours cut, with some people concerned its entire future could even be at risk. The mobile library service is also in danger of being taken off the road, while Chipping Sodbury’s library is under threat. Thousands of people have signed a petition to try and protect the Winterbourne facility but a consultation exercise was carried out on potential changes ahead of future debates on the service The council said it resulted in
more than 3,000 feedback forms being returned, with drop-in sessions for the public also held and meetings conducted with town and parish councils and other interested groups. It said the volume of feedback would take time to analyse but the findings would be presented to councillors before they made a decision on the next stage of the review in September. The council had indicated it was interested in possible community involvement in running libraries and said it would now explore new ideas put forward during the consultation. Councillor Heather Goddard, chairwoman of the communities committee, said although money had to be saved, the main objective was to provide “the best possible service that is sustainable for the future”. She said: “The consultation process illustrated the depth of feeling and the range of
individuals who use our libraries, as well as revealing a number of new ideas and innovative models of providing services in the future. “Council officers will now take time to talk to the various groups, including the town and parish councils and community organisations who expressed an interest in working together, to explore new options for each of
11
our libraries.” Further consultation will be carried out later on updated plans for each library. Councillors will also be briefed in September on potential community hubs to incorporate multiple services, which could include libraries. Yate is one of the areas prioritised for such a system.

Popular Acton Court summer opening sees high demand for special event tickets TICKETS for events at Acton Court during its annual summer opening are selling fast. Believed to be the most “original” Tudor house in Britain,
Acton Court in Iron Acton will be open to the public from July 6-August 14. A series of special events have been planned to run during that
five-and-a-half week period, although two are already sold out. Anyone who wants to attend the others have been urged to get their tickets quickly. As Frome Valley Voice went to press, bookings were still being taken for A Brief History of Music on Friday, July 22, and the Topping Tooters of the Town on Sunday, August 14, which will bring the season to a close. The July event, featuring Chris Green and Sophie Matthews, takes in 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes in a fun and fast moving show. The season finale will be a celebration of the music of town musicians, known as the waits, who were famed in London. Acton Court is known for accommodating Henry VIII during a summer progress around the West Country with his second wife Anne Boleyn in

1535. The visit resulted in Nicholas Poyntz, owner of what was then a moated manor house, having a lavishly decorated east wing built to impress the king. It took just nine months to build and today comprises most of what remains of Acton Court, which is a grade one listed structure, with both the house and grounds scheduled ancient monuments. But the fragile nature of the east wing’s construction means only small, escorted groups can view the rooms at any one time. During the public opening, full access to the house and grounds will be with a professional guide only and groups must book in advance. The site will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. A NEW summer programme at Winterbourne’s medieval barn is about to start, with visitors set to enjoy events from workshops to opera. More than 3,000 people a year already attend activities at the barn and it is hoped the schedule will lead to even more discovering what it has to offer. Those involved with the building in Church Lane hope the range of events will also bring the important structure to the attention of local residents who are still unaware of its existence. Summer activities schedule at medieval barn set to bring in visitors season will be a medieval fair on Sunday, June 12, running from 11am-4pm. The Company of Chivalry will bring historical re-enactments to the site to show what life was like in medieval times. Cooking, craftwork, archery and trades are set to be featured, along with music from minstrels and military combat.
An all-day introductory basket weaving workshop will take place on Saturday, June 18, for those who want to learn the skill, with a free talk on the history of cider following on Tuesday, July 5, at 7.30pm. Dr Richard Stone is the guest speaker and those attending will have the chance to taste the produce from a 200-year-old cider press at the barn. The talk comes after the 7pm annual general meeting of the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust, which is open to all. Returning to the barn on the evening of Sunday, July 10, will be Tessitoura Opera, this time with La Cenerentola, a fresh take on one of Rossini’s best known works. Those attending will also be able to enjoy a picnic in the grounds of the barn before the performance. Music continues on Saturday, July 16, with an all-day singing workshop exploring the type of folk music sung in churches
in the 18th and 19th centuries before disapproving Victorians replaced it with organs and robed choir members. Visit www.winterbournebarn. org.uk for full details of events and admission rates.

THE Crossbow Singers are well into rehearsals for their Summer Concert, under the temporary leadership of Carolyn Dutton, assisted by Liam Grogan and accompanied on the piano by Mary Darby. The regular Musical Director, Rachel Gittoes, is currently on maternity leave, having given birth to a baby girl in earlier this year. The music for our 2016 Summer Concert has been chosen by the groups newly appointed Music Committee. They have decided upon the theme ‘Great Music for Great Britain’, choosing music written by British composers from various ages and genres. The Summer Concert will take place on Monday 4 and Tuesday 5 July. If you would like to book tickets, please contact Rose for Monday tickets on 01454 772675 or Mary for Tuesday tickets on 01454 887885. All profits from the sale of tickets for our Summer Concert will be shared between two charities. This year, the choir has chosen to support ‘The Wild Goose Café’, which is situated in Bristol and provides meals for the homeless and ‘The Peace and Hope Trust’, which is a charity based in Ross-on-Wye and which transports clothing and other essential aid to poor and marginalised communities in Nicaragua. The groups is usually able to send £350-£400 to each of our the nominated charities. There will also be a retiring collection for The Great Western Air Ambulance at the concert.

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice
It is time to invest in our infrastructure and open the ‘Road to Nowhere’
T
HE ‘Road to Nowhere’ in Yate is often said to have become a symbol of a lack of investment in Yate. The stretch of dual carriageway sits unfinished and is not currently open to vehicles after being abandoned in the 1970s. The land where the partially completed road sits was originally bought with an intention to link South Yate with Station Road using a dual carriageway which would have seen a direct route connecting the Rodford Way roundabout with the existing Badminton Road junction, opposite the Council Offices. Since the road was abandoned in the 1970’s, the population of Yate has trebled, thousands of houses have been built in Yate and traffic growth locally is much higher than the national average, but we have seen no major progress on our infrastructure. The ‘Road no Nowhere’ remains closed, a permanent reminder of how much we have lost out in investment to other areas in the South West. We have missed out on investment to cities like Bristol for too long, so I am pushing hard to ensure we
receive our fair share so we are able to realise every last bit of potential in our area. The abandoned ‘Road to Nowhere’, has been said to epitomise the feeling that we are often overlooked. We should turn that feeling into one of hope for the future of our local area, finally opening the road would help to unlock the flow of traffic in Yate, helping to tackle growing congestion, and provide the chance to complete a missing arterial link in Yate’s infrastructure. I have been raising this issue directly with the Council, Network Rail and Government Ministers, and I am delighted that the Leader of South Gloucestershire Council has now joined me in calling for the road to be completed. After receiving £500,000 to complete the full feasibility study into building junction 18A onto the M4, we have reasons to be hopeful.

Around the W.I. Winterbourne Evening WI The vice president Anita Dyer took the chair for our last meeting meeting and welcomed one new member together with all members on a bright sunny evening. The speaker, Heather, a volunteer from the Charity One25, spoke on their work helping prostitutes,or sex workers, on the streets of Bristol. They have a van which goes onto to street every evening through to 3.00am Friday night until Saturday morning. This gives women the chance of a hot drink, a snack, supplied condoms and generally gives them an opportunity to talk if they wish. The talk was very interesting and a number of myths believed by our members were dispelled. We were told a high percentage of girls started on the streets as young as thirteen and mostly to earn money for a drug/ drink habit, some were very bright intelligent people but
needed the cash. We did a 10 question quiz to see how much we understood about the oldest profession. Heather was thanked by Susan Marshfield. A very successful cake stall was run. Attention was drawn to up and coming trips, including a trip with family and friends on the Matthew in June. The Group Meeting had been much enjoyed with the speaker, Lady Foley telling of the night the Queen came to stay, one of our joint members Angela Routley had won the competition for a birthday card for the Queen. The Group outing to The Three Choirs Vineyard at Newent was promoted. Our next meeting is on Thursday 9th June when the speaker on “The Dead Sea to Damascus” is Peter Berry. New members and visitors always welcome. Coalpit Heath WI We welcomed Philip Unwin

from the SS Great Britain to our meeting, to give a talk on the “SS Great Britain – Concorde of her Day”. Complete with slide show Philip gave a very detailed account of the construction of the ship, her maiden voyage right through to her demise as a floating warehouse and her sad resting place in the Falkland Islands. After being left as a wreck for several years, and the dogged determination of those who appreciated the engineering feat of Brunel, she eventually began the 8000 mile journey home to Bristol to be renovated in her home town. Philip also gave an insight into the life of Brunel, his family and other engineering works. Sadly our winning run in the skittles competition came to an end; we had progressed through to the fourth round only to be beaten by Locking Green WI. The team enjoyed the trip to the Kings Arms, Easton in Gordano but were a bit alarmed to be presented with rubber balls rather than the usual wooden balls – ladies you will need more practice with rubber for next year. This didn’t stop Jacquie
Dean who was top scorer with 32. Captain Marcia Caple was presented with a bottle of wine at the May meeting as a thankyou for taking the team through so far. We had a fabulous quilting talk in May from Sally Harrison who brought with her many quilts that she has made over the years during her stays in the US, where she took up the craft. Even if you couldn’t sew, Sally’s enthusiasm for her craft came across and you had to admire her eye for detail, colour coordination and patience. Sally also teaches quilting in the local area. We also held a craft completion at the May meeting where members were given the challenge of making a floral arrangement, however it could not be made out of flowers. Congratulations to Jenny Gray who made an intricate sugar paste arrangement, other entries included items made from lego and tissue paper. It was certainly a challenge. We have a few events coming up so ladies if you are interested please come to the next meeting ready to book your place for the Tytherington Farm visit, Bath walking tour and the trip to the distillery. Winterbourne Down WI Events during the past month have included a trip to the Hippodrome to see Mama Mia. We also ran a very successful cake stall, despite the bad weather, at the May Day Carnival in Winterbourne Down. We also supported the Spring Group Meeting where Lady Foley gave an interesting talk on “Having the Queen to Stay”. In June six members will be going to the Three Choirs Vineyard at Newent, Gloucestershire to sample some wine. We unfortunately lost our

skittles match against Old Sodbury WI. Good luck to them in the semi finals. Our meeting on 2nd June is given by Robert Tinker on ‘Interesting Nooks and Crannies’ in Bristol. On July 7 we welcome Mrs Alvis talking on Cheesemaking and on 1st September Shaun McCormack will be coming to talk about being one of the Queens Bodyguards. All are welcome to join us at 7.30pm at All Saints Church Hall. Frampton Cotterell WI In June we are getting involved with The Big Picnic to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday – this is due to be held at Beesmoor Road playing fields on Sunday 12 June. Also in June, The Globe is hosting a Greek night for us, so we will all be sampling sharing platters of humous, olives, garlic mushrooms, feta salad. A reminder that we are involved in the Frampton Festival in July, where we will be hosting our regular cake stall and selling copies of our own members’ cookery book. Our other events coming up over the coming months will include craft demonstrations, a chance to learn about and try morris dancing and a presentation from a local award-winning gardener. Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee. Floral Friends stand tall with sunflower planting FRAMPTON Cotterell is set for an explosion of colour as volunteers continue their work around the village. Floral Friends have grown sunflowers from seeds collected from last year and have planted the seedlings in their wild flower bed in The Park. The groups is also working with Buglife to establish a wildflower area in Glebe Lands near to the River Frome as part of the B-Lines project. The area has been stripped of turf and will soon be ready for wildflower seeds to be sown. The summer bedding plants for the planters, floral gateways and hanging baskets around the village will be arriving in the first week of June, with members will be busy ensuring that they are all planted as quickly as possible.

HE Queen’s ninetieth birthday has been being celebrated for several months, in different ways. For some people, it is the nostalgia of the old, perhaps what we remember from our childhood -- forget about how we had to pay for medicine before the NHS etc. For others, it is an opportunity to celebrate with something new. The composer Judith Weir was commissioned to write some new music for it. Another composer, Debbie Wiseman, has also been commissioned -- I have listened to her five-part work, The 90th Birthday Celebration Suite, which is quite refreshing and also evocative of certain times and places. ‘Something old and something new’ -- sounds like a quotation from the Bible, and it is (Matthew 13:52). There, in Matthew’s gospel, Jesus talks in a parable about someone who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven bringing out treasures, old and new. The church has just celebrated Pentecost, a festival of the Holy Spirit, which has been called the birthday of the church. But what we celebrate in church is not just an event of 2,000 years ago, but a celebration of the Holy Spirit with us today, in new, refreshing, and unexpected ways. The Holy Spirit may be old, but also all new. Colin Lunt”

Runners knee
by Megan Adams, Physiotherapist at the Willow Brook Clinic The term ‘runner’s knee’ is used due to the fact that joggers and runners are commonly susceptible to knee pain due to the repeated impact caused by running on hard surfaces. What causes runner’s knee? The injury is caused by the kneecap becoming misaligned. Ordinarily the kneecap sits in a groove and moves up or down as the knee straightens or flexes. However, if the kneecap is slightly out of alignment it can rub against the edges of the groove in which it sits. As the kneecap rubs in this misaligned position, the cartilage around and behind the kneecap can wear away. Occasionally there will be a build-up of fluid which can cause the area around the injury to swell, causing discomfort. Where and when might I feel the pain of runner’s knee? The pain of runner’s knee can be felt either behind the kneecap itself or at the back of the knee, and may develop after undertaking physical activity. You may also experience a grinding sensation around the kneecap area.
muscle which helps to hold the kneecap in position. This muscle is called the quadriceps, which aligns the kneecap to the centre of the groove. Is there anything I can do to prevent runner’s knee? The jarring motion of running on roads and tracks can aggravate runner’s knee, and therefore it is important to wear good quality running shoes with adequate support. Running on softer surfaces such as grass can ease the symptoms and further prevent runner’s knee.
A physiotherapist can help you to recover from a runner’s knee injury by giving you the appropriate exercises, alongside other treatment. Remember that runner’s knee can be experienced by anyone, not just runners. If you have any pain or discomfort in your muscles or joints, a physiotherapist can assess you and establish what needs to be achieved to make you well again.
How is runner’s knee treated? In order to prevent runner’s knee, it is important to strengthen the

June, 2016
STUDENTS at Winterbourne International Academy received letters from their parents and teachers before this summer’s GCSE examinations. It was the idea of teachers at the academy, who got in touch with parents asking them to get involved. The students of WIA were handed the letters from their parents, along with a letter from their teachers, encouraging them to do their best. Assistant Principal Chris Jackson said: “It was something we thought we would do to help encourage the students. They have worked really hard over the last year and we just tell them to do their best.” Year 11 student Yasmin Dickinson said “It is something special, and definitely something different from a normal day at school. It’s nice, because it shows how much they care about us”. The NSPCC has been running a helpline for students to call to help them manage stress in schools, and in the run up to this year’s examination papers, the number of children getting in touch about exam stress rose. e Down Heath, Iron Acton & Winterbourn

New advisors being recruited to improve support for people with dementia DEMENTIA advisors are being recruited by health chiefs to work with people in South Gloucestershire who have been diagnosed with the condition. The team will provide help and support from the time of diagnosis until an individual needs specialist long-term support from social care or specialist mental health services. South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is spending £100,000 on building up the team, operating with South Gloucestershire Council and developing the group with the Alzheimer’s Society and local community healthcare provider Sirona. Dr Peter Bagshaw, the CCG’s clinical lead
for dementia, said: “The dementia advisors we’re recruiting will help people in that daunting period following diagnosis when their world has been turned upside down, giving them and their loved ones the support and guidance they need.” He said another important area was the provision of care for the hundreds of people in South Gloucestershire who had not yet been diagnosed with the disease. He said: “We hope anyone concerned about their diminishing memory and its effect on their daily life will overcome any apprehension they have and make an appointment to see their GP.” The new service is expected to be operational in late July or early August and
29
anyone with an interest in dementia care locally is being asked to make comments or suggestions via the CCG website or at their local library. Meanwhile, the CCG and council are also currently consulting on a new three-year dementia plan aimed at improving diagnosis rates. There are about 1,900 South Gloucestershire residents who have been diagnosed dementia and possibly 1,400 currently undiagnosed. The introduction of a primary care diagnosis pathway in the district has already led to a dramatic reduction in waits for diagnosis.
Final call to get registered and have a say in EU vote ELECTORAL officers in South Gloucestershire are urging people to make sure they have a vote in the European Union referendum. Anyone currently not on the electoral register has only until Tuesday, June 7, to ensure they can have a say on Britain’s future. The referendum on the UK’s membership
of the EU takes place on Thursday, June 23, and an information booklet from the Electoral Commission is currently being put through letterboxes to give further details on the referendum, the voting registration process and the voting method. John McCormack, South Gloucestershire’s electoral registration officer, said: “I’d
encourage everyone in South Gloucestershire to act now if they’re not already registered to vote. It’s easy to register and only takes a few minutes online.” Registration can be done at www.gov.uk/ register-to-vote or those without internet access can phone 0800 328 0280 to get a registration form.

South Glos Show brewing up a storm VISITORS to the South Gloucestershire Show this summer will have the chance to decide which is the area’s best beer. The annual event, which runs on 6 and 7 August at a site in Henfield, is holding its first beer competition. Five breweries that are based in South Gloucestershire are going head to head to see which brew comes out on top. Great Western Brewery, Cotswolds Spring Brewery, Bath Ales, Severn Vale and Wickwar Brewery have all entered a pale ale and a bitter into the competition, which was launched by the Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall. The beers will be available at the show as well as at local pubs. Ballot forms will be available to pick up at pubs and the ballot box will be in the Beer Festival area at the Show. South Glos Show supports new charity THIS year’s South Glos Show is to help raise funds for the Meningitis Now charity. The Gloucestershire based charity replaces the Great Western Air Ambulance as the nominated charity for the event, which last year attracted over 24,000 visitors. The Show returns to the Westerleigh Showground over the weekend of 6 and 7 August. Meningitis Now, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, will have an awareness stand at the show and interactive attractions for the public to donate to the charity. Liz Brown, the Chief Executive of Meningitis Now, said: “Events like this, as well as being wonderful fundraising opportunities, are also valuable ways to spread awareness about the disease and make sure people know the signs and symptoms and how to look out for themselves and their loved ones.” The show’s headline this year, The Knights of the Damned, will be staging a Joust in the main arena, and 2016 sees the return of motorbike stunt man, Flyin’ Ryan. Other attractions include a music festival, motor show, country fair and a BMX stunt arena.

New president for Rotary Club CHIPPING Sodbury Rotary Club is about to elect its next president, with Ian Lowe taking on the yearlong role at a landmark time for the organisation. The club will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2017, an event that coincides with the centenary of the formation of the Rotary Foundation. Here, Mr Lowe explains how Rotary operates and outlines the work it does to support local and international projects. “IN July I shall become president of the Rotary Club of Chipping Sodbury for one year, with 2017 being significant as our club will celebrate its diamond anniversary. “We raise around £30,000 each year through events such as our classic car run, the Sodbury Sportive cycle event and the Sodbury Slog cross-country run. “We use these funds to help local, national and international causes, with donations made to
individuals and organisations, including local charities and schools. Anyone can apply for a donation and an application form can be found by visiting the community service page on our website. “We also have an annual entertainment programme for elderly members of our community and we work with local schools to provide challenges such as Youth Speaks and Young Innovator. “Other work includes donating money to provide Shelter Boxes for relief during international disasters such as floods and earthquakes. “Next year is also the centenary of the formation of the Rotary Foundation, a charitable organisation within Rotary International - the global organisation with clubs in 120 countries and more than a million members. “Through donations from those members, £2 billion has been raised to fund projects to the tune of more than £60

Since 1988, when Rotary began working with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative to immunise more than two billion children, the number

Charity couple to welcome coins and stamps at festival to boost research funding VISITORS to the Frampton Festival will be able to take used stamps and old coins along to donate them to a good cause. Winterbourne couple Ron and Gina Pritchard are coordinators for the charity RP Fighting Blindness, which raises money for research into the disease retinitis pigmentosa . Known as RP, it’s a condition that leads to loss of vision and blindness, with the charity working to find a treatment or cure for the 25,000 people in the UK who are affected by it. Appeals for the stamps and coins have been successful, with donations sold on to boost charity funds. Anyone going to the festival in the Centenary Field, Mill Lane, on Saturday, July 16, will be able to meet Ron and Gina at their stall, find out more about RP and have a go at winning a prize. The couple will also accept stamps and coins, including unwanted foreign currency. Stamps should be torn, or preferably cut, from letters along with the corner of the envelopes bearing them.

loud every single hair on my body stood to attention and a surge of endorphins raced through my weary body giving me a sense of euphoria. Of course, this sense of elation was short lived as it dawned on me that I had another fourteen miles to go, which included the infamous Docklands and the Blackfriar’s Underpass. Sure enough, I navigated both, blotting out the sight of people urinating, wretching, swaying and crying as I did so. At mile twenty three, I witnessed something that will haunt me forever. I shuffled past David Sheath, the army captain who tragically died during this run. His stricken body lay strewn on the floor with a group of marshals and medics surrounding him. David’s face was ashen. God bless his soul. The following final three miles were a dizzying blur. I remember racing (staggering?) along the Embankment, passing Big Ben and crossing the finish line in a respectable 3 hours 59 minutes. I then collapsed in a heap. The

medal was too heavy to wear so I put in into my bag. It wasn’t until I’d left the secure runners area and needed people to know why I was hobbling like a caricature old man than I felt like I had to put it on. It was still too heavy. A week later, I travelled to Dorset for my second marathon challenge. This race was the complete opposite of London for it proved to be an excruciating and debilitating experience. Billed as a picturesque race along country lanes through the villages of Hinton St Mary, Marnhull, Stalbridge, Todber, Stour Row, Margaret Marsh, West Orchard, Farrington, Child Okeford and Hammoon, this marathon wasn’t for the faint hearted. Don’t get me wrong – it is a wonderful, race, just not one week after running London! For twenty six miles I ran. I ached. I slowed. I limped. I doubled over. I thought I was going to be sick as I ran up hill and down dale. However the reassuring pats on the back by my fellow runners Matt, Alice and Jer accompanied with a dogged determination

n James with Alice, Matt and Jer in Dorset enabled me to complete the task (in 4 hours 16 minutes). Come the end, there were no arms in the air, no cries of victory, no pyrotechnics, I was utterly depleted. I had nothing left. People ask me how tough it actually was (to run two marathons in the space of a week), as though you can put a number on pain. Here’s my answer: with only 200m to go in both marathons, I felt I could not run any more. With 200m to go I thought I couldn’t summon the strength to beat the exhaustion
and pain howling through my body in order to run the final furlong. Bloody mindedness ensured I did, but every single muscle in my body ached. Every sinew and fibre moaned and groaned like a child not wanting to visit their grandparents on a Sunday afternoon. That’s how much it hurt. Will I ever run a marathon again after the pleasure and the pain of doing back to back races? My body says ‘no’, but my heart says ‘definitely.’

Patients welcome pilot minor injuries scheme at GP surgeries A YATE GP practice said a minor injuries pilot scheme recently launched in South Gloucestershire had been well received by patients. The two-year project involves surgeries dealing with minor injuries, with practice-based nurses being supported by family doctors. Minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries, sprains, cuts and bites are among the injuries that can be treated. The service complements the Yate Minor Injuries Unit, which local councillors are concerned to protect, and eases pressure on hospital accident and emergency departments. It allows patients to see a nurse in the GP surgery where they are registered on the same day instead of waiting for treatment at a minor injury unit (MIU) or hospital A&E department. South Gloucestershire is thought to be the only area in the country in which every patient with a minor injury can be dealt with straight away by GP practice staff during surgeries’ normal opening hours. All 25 GP practices in the district are taking part in the pilot, which only started in April and will be monitored and evaluated during the time it runs. Dr Nick Mansfield, of the
Wellington Road Family Practice in Yate, said: “We’ve had ten people use the new service so far and the feedback we have had is that it is an efficient and excellent service.” South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has funded the scheme, with the first return of statistics due after three months. But Dr Ann Sephton, deputy clinical chairwoman at the CCG, said initial feedback had been positive. She said: “We’re so pleased that this has been a successful start to our minor injury service, which we believe is unique in England and may be copied in many other areas. “The practices, their nurses and our CCG have combined to launch a scheme which has been really appreciated by the patients who have used it so far. “We still have a long way to go before the end of this pilot so we will be interested to see what demand there is during the school holidays and other peak times, as well as the impact this additional service has on our MIUs and emergency departments.” If an injury requires other treatment, patients can be referred to a GP, emergency department, MIU or X-ray unit.

FRAMPTON cricket club have had a mixed start to the 2016 season, The first team have so far played 3; a win against local rivals Old Down CC, a loss to a strong Nailsea team after a deluge of rain and storms during the tea break, and one abandonment away at YMCA. But after the 3 successive promotions, the club are set for a competitive season ahead against some new teams that they have not encountered before. The first team has also suffered an

Reality Check for Old Man Fram injury set-back. Tim Mason, who is a mainstay of the team (and who claims a 9 year run of consecutive league fixtures) suffered a serious knee injury in the second game of the season and looks set for a long spell on the sidelines. Cynical teammates say this is to the delight of all the cricket purist, but to the T20 fans will be miss out.
Winterbourne and Frampton in local derby T20 action - Frampton edged a tight match.
The second team have had a very good start to the year, collecting two wins and having a game cancelled for weather. Club Treasurer and long servant Ian Roylance chalked up another century against Old Down 2’s in an emphatic 200 run victory. Expectation is high on skipper Robin Cater for a promotion for the second team this year. The third team have similarly had a good start to the year, with 2 wins, even without their experienced skipper John
Hughes. A blend of youth and experience is helping to steer the 3rd’s towards what will hopefully be a successful season. As ever, any players wishing to join a friendly and welcoming club are more than welcome, please contact any of the officials on the club website for more details or indeed any of the youth managers, the youth team traingin takes place on a Wednesday night so please come along if you are interested.

Organisers of the Saddleback Sodbury Sportive are hoping to increase participation and improve on its success story. Event organiser Bill Bennett said; “We want to make the Sodbury Sportive even better than before and to do so we need as many riders as possible to take part. If we can attract the same or more riders this year we should be on target to better the £20,658 raised in 2015’. The Sportive offers a choice of a 30 mile, 60 and 100 mile route, catering for all levels of cycling ability. All of the profits are donated to good causes and entrants are promised a fully supported event with technical assistance and mechanical help available and plenty of refreshment stations. Michael and Sam make history at memorable Badminton Horse Trials HISTORY was made at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials when Michael Jung became 2016 champion - a victory that also secured the elusive £240,000 Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing. Jung led from start to finish with La Biosthetique Sam to complete on the lowest ever score at Badminton of just 34.4 penalties. He was also the first German to take the Badminton title in its 67-year history on only his second visit to the prestigious event. The Jung factor had helped produce even bigger than ever crowds of spectators keen to see the sport’s world number one - the only eventer to have held Olympic (London 2012), world and European championship titles all at the same time. They were treated to a display of horsemanship that earned Jung, 33, and 16-year-old Sam a standing ovation when the event reached its climax in the showjumping arena, having already made their mark in the dressage phase and across a tough cross-country track that had taken its toll. Having achieved the best dressage score on day one, they kept a clean sheet during the rest of the challenge, jumping clear and within the time across country and over the showjumping fences. After receiving the Badminton trophy from the Duchess of Cornwall and the Rolex award, Jung said: “This is a very special moment for me. My horse is amazing and very special to me. I am very proud of him.”

The Grand Slam recognises riders who win the big three international horse trials Badminton and Burghley in the UK and the USA’s Kentucky - consecutively but has only ever been won once before, by Britain’s Pippa Funnell in 2003. Jung said after winning Burghley last autumn, despite a broken ankle, and Kentucky in the spring, the Grand Slam was in his mind but he had tried to make Badminton as “normal” a
competition as possible to avoid increased pressure. Taking the Badminton runner-up slot was Jung’s compatriot Andreas Osholt on So Is Et, with Britain’s Gemma Tattersall third on Arctic Soul. New Zealanders filled the next three places - Mark Todd on Leonidas II, Clarke Johnstone on Balmoral Sensation and Jock Paget on Clifton Lush - with GB’s Kristina Cook seventh on Star Witness and Izzy Taylor eighth
on Allercombe Ellie. Zara Tindall earned a qualification for the Rio Olympics by completing with High Kingdom. But there were a number of cross-country falls, including one for Bristol’s Dani Evans from Raphael II and Emily King (daughter of Team GB veteran Mary) with Brookleigh. Evans did finish on her second horse, Smart Time. Photos courtesy of: Mitsubishi Motors/Kit Houghton
Eric takes over Badminton course building reins as Giuseppe bids farewell NEXT year’s Badminton will have another new cross-country course designer after the surprise announcement that Giuseppe Della Chiesa is standing down after just three years. The job of creating the best known track in eventing has gone to Eric Winter, who lived in Yatton, near Bristol, before taking on Severnvale Equestrian Centre, Chepstow, with his wife, Lizzel. Winter, 53, has designed the
Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials course for the last ten years, as well as designing for the Asian Games and a string of European pony, junior and young rider championships. He was technical delegate at Badminton from 2011-14 and as a rider, completed the event in 1991. Winter said: “It is a great honour to be asked to design the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton course. “I first visited Badminton

in 1974 – that was my first ever taste of eventing. In recent years I have been involved in several different roles and have got to know the team behind the scenes very well. “To be asked to design here is truly a dream come true and I am extremely thankful to all those involved for giving me this opportunity. I am really looking forward to the challenges ahead.” Della Chiesa, praised by riders for his Badminton tracks,
said he did not feel able to accept the invitation to continue for a further period. The Italian said: “It has been a true honour to have been offered the possibility to continue but, sadly, I am not able to go on due to shifting life priorities and new personal commitments. “Being also a true believer in the benefits of changing course designers from time to time, I wish Eric all success.”

FRAMPTON Athletic took their end of season tour to a mystery destination, which turned out to be the seaside town of Newquay. Famed within the group as the place most went after their GCSE exams some 17 years ago, a trip down memory lane as on the cards. Organiser of the previous 3 tours, Marc Hughes, stepped down as tour organiser this year, handing the reigns over to Yinka Brownlow and Dan Cook. The tour started in an unprecedented manner, with the traditional meeting time of 8am on Friday thrown out of the window and a 10.30pm meet on the THURSDAY arranged with Cowboys the theme for the evening’s fancy dress. 18 cowboys headed in to the centre of Bristol and The Phoenix pub. Unfortunately, one of the tour virgins, Darren Thornbury, made the ill-informed decision to start drinking earlier in the day on the Thursday, which resulted in him falling asleep before we’d even left Bristol. That wasn’t the last of the schoolboy errors for Mr Thornbury. Having finally got on board the 2.25am Megabus from Bristol to Newquay, we made it to Bridgwater services before being ordered off the bus for it to be cleaned due to a certain struggling cowboy ‘decorating’ the bus. That was the end of Darren’s tour, as the bus driver wouldn’t allow him to finish his journey. The remaining 17 cowboys did continue their journey and gave Darren a wave as we headed back on the M5 south. Having finally arrived at Newquay Footgolf was the order of the day. It transpired that goalkeepers make the best footgolfers. From there, to the pub, for the now infamous Adrian Pell FAFC Tour Quiz. The quiz covers a wide history of the club, both on and off the pitch and has become a regular fixture on tour for the last 4 years. Saturday night was the main night and the fancy dress theme

Champions five years out of five: the girl football team ready to mix it with the women FRAMPTON Rangers Girls Football Team only came about in 2011 because Tony Michael and Paul King wanted their daughters to play football as part of a team. The majority of those players are still part of the team today, having experienced an amazing journey that culminated in getting a trophy at Wembley. Over the 5 seasons they have played as a girls team they have a hugely impressive list of achievements, having won tournaments five times in a row, loosing only one game in the process. They have played 80 games and won 78 and scored an amazing 667 goals. From their first season the team wanted to play in an annual tournament and ‘go on tour’. The first year they had to play in a boys tournament as they didn’t really exist for girls. This was a bit of a hard introduction for the 11/12 year old girls but they won the Fair Play Award. Since then they have gone on tour every year and won. This year the tour took them to Great Yarmouth where they entered the ladies section. Despite playing against some significantly older and bigger women they made it to the final, where they lost, but only 1-0. This year a few of the girls made up a team to enter the People’s FA Cup. They got through the qualifying rounds and then had to travel to Sheffield for the final which they won. They are now People’s FA Cup champions 2016 and will
get presented with their Cup at the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium. Being part of Frampton Rangers Girls Football Team has brought together a group of girls and their families who would probably not have met otherwise. They are now a close knit group and the parents enjoy the social side and the fun on tour as much as the girls enjoy the football. The majority of the girls are now busy revising for their GCSEs so football is on the back burner but only for a short while
as they are hoping to enter the Ladies League from September 2016.
From Girls to Women: the story of Frampton Rangers Girls Football Team • First formed in 2011 by Tony Michael and Paul King and the majority of those first players are still part of the team • Won the league 5 seasons in
a row • Played 80 matches and won 78 • Only lost 1 game and drew one game over the 5 seasons • Scored 667 goals • First tour played against boys and got the fair play award. Tours 2, 3 and 4 winners. Tour 5 lost in the final against ladies league teams • Won the People’s FA cup 2016. Some of the team were presented their trophy at Wembley stadium on FA cup final day.
Frampton Cotterell girl with chance to make world championships
More players sought for Winterbourne Utd youngsters
A 12 year old girl who attends Winterbourne International Academy is heading to the midlands in an attempt to qualify for the world championships in Dragon Tang Soo Do martial arts. Lexi Johnson is already an international champion, having gaining a gold in Cardiff in forms (patterns) and sparring. If she does well this month, she will have a chance to compete in Manchester in October at the World Championships.
COACHES of Winterbourne United’s youth sides are already planning for next season, adding to the number of sides they run and offering more chances for players to play for the club. A newly formed U8’s (school year 2 in September) is starting up with training during the summer months and the new U10’s are looking to add numbers to their ranks. The current U9’s, U11’s and U13’s are looking to build on successful seasons with two sides celebrating winning silverware. The Under 9’s won their mid season cup competition and George Haskins’ U13’s won 12 of their 18 games to finish runners up. The club is always looking to add to its player numbers.
