Youth club to re-open two years after closure
Community picnic for Queen’s birthday
IT’S two years since a row broke out over the closure of Frampton Cotterell’s youth club. But the service is now on the verge of being revived, probably in the summer, to serve the parish and surrounding Winterbourne and Westerleigh areas. The club will continue to be in the Brockeridge Centre after the Southern Brooks Community Partnership won the tender to run the facility, initially for a year. With an agreement to operate the club twice a week for different age categories on 48 weeks of the year, it is hoped the service will bring in more users than had been the case when Frampton Cotterell Parish Council took the decision to close the club. Despite criticism of the step taken, it said it wanted to review the service and with only one youth worker left, felt it was the right time to look at options. A survey was also carried out,

Frampton plans ‘Big Lunch’ to celebrate Queen’s birthday
Beacon lit for Queen’s birthday The Queen’s 90th birthday was marked in Frampton by the lighting of the village’s beacon. The event, on the Centenary Field was organised by local Scouts and Guides, with all ages in the various organisations attending the event, as well as parents and the public.

A COMMUNITY lunch could be on the cards at Beesmoor Playing Field if an idea from the field’s management committee comes to fruition. Organisers want to hold the big lunch, part of annual event across the UK, on June 12 from 11.30 to 3.30. Letters have been sent to residents living by the playing field to get their reaction before proceeding. In the letter the organisers say; “The aim of the event is to put on a community picnic and also raise funds for the maintenance of the playing field and children’s play area. We also hope to invite local organisations to have a stall to raise funds for their activities”. The regular Sunday car boot sale, which starts again in May, would be cancelled for the day. If those neighbouring the field support the idea, the event will be advertised at the start of May.

Get knitted! Coalpit Heath woman in charity challenge A COALPIT Heath woman is aiming to knit a baby hat a day as she does her bit for a charity that aims to help African mums and babies. Tracey Morris has set herself the target of knitting 366 baby hats for Life for African Mothers, a Maternal Health charity aiming to make birth safer in Sub Saharan Africa. By providing medication to treat the complications of child birth, Life for African Mothers have been able to support hospitals and health centres across Africa and have seen huge reductions in death rates. The charity also sends out baby clothes, which is where Tracey says she can help: “I’ve been knitting baby clothes for Life for African Mothers for a couple of years now, but this year I set myself the challenge to knit one hat every day, then a friend suggested I get sponsored for it too.”

Paul’s Place achieves dream for members in need of social housing
THE charity Paul’s Place is about to achieve an ambition of providing social housing for people with disabilities. Paul’s Place, based in Coalpit Heath, was established to support adults with physical, sensory and cognitive impairment. It provides a meeting place, a range of activities, a social programme and support to ensure members can remain as independent as possible. Founder Kath Aldom said: “We are extremely proud to announce we are very close to completing adaptations on our recently purchased bungalow, making it fully accessible for the use of two Paul’s Place members who were in great need of social housing. “For many years we dreamt of the day that we would be able to provide social housing for people who were in need of a home they could enjoy, feel part of a great
www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk
community and, of course, feel totally supported by Paul’s Place, which is based just round the corner. “After a very long wait and many years of fundraising, we
were finally able to show our members the almost completed
apartments. To say they are excited is the understatement of the year!.” The identical bungalow apartments are on Beesmoor Road, right in the middle of Coalpit Heath, Frampton Cotterell and Winterbourne. Kath said: “We hope everyone who meets the two new tenants will make them feel very welcome.” Until the charity was started in 1995, there had been no group supporting adults with physical disabilities in Bristol and the surrounding areas. As well as providing a meeting place and activities, it also runs a carers’ support group and respite services, including short breaks for members and carers.
Bridge House celebrates anniversary with garden party TO many people, Bridge House in Frampton Cotterell is synonymous with the model railways and bank holiday fetes. But this month, the residential home that sits in the extensive gardens by the River Frome celebrates its 25th anniversary. Dave and Jane Parnell, the owners of the property, are organising an open house on 19 May, 25 years to the day since Bridge House opened. The event will run from 2 - 4.30pm and the by now famous model railway will be running. Jane Parnell says there is an open invitation for the community to attend, saying she knew where to start the invitations, but not where to end. She told the Voice: “We thought we ought to commemorate the landmark. We didn’t do 21 years so thought we’d better for 25 years. We’ve got old doing it. We have a lovely staff and it’s been a happy life.”

Closed down youth club about to be revived after lying dormant for two years A YOUTH club for Frampton Cotterell and surrounding parishes is set to re-open, two years after controversially closing down. A starting date has not yet been decided but it could be in the summer. It will then provide two sessions a week, one for the 11-13 age group and the other for older members. It is also proposed that the club will operate during school holidays as well as term time, opening for 48 weeks of the year.
It was in 2014 that a row broke out over the future of youth services in the Frampton area when Frampton Cotterell Parish Council suspended the Brockeridge Centre-based club while a review was carried out. The council had funded the twice-weekly club since 2000 but wanted to consider other possible ways of supporting a greater number of youngsters and decided to close it down while alternative ideas were considered. At the time, although average
Warnings of year-long delays as temporary one-way traffic system set to affect ring road PEOPLE living in the Frome Valley have been warned about traffic disruption for a year that could affect those using the Avon ring road. Delays are anticipated due to the introduction of a temporary one-way system on Stoke Lane, which runs from Frenchay Park Road to join Coldharbour Lane, south of the University of the West of England. Stoke Lane is being widened for a bus lane as part of the MetroBus project and due to the building of a retaining wall, only southbound traffic will be allowed on the route from Sunday, May 22. Northbound traffic will be diverted along Frenchay Park road to Bristol Road and on to the ring road at Hambrook. Drivers will then have to go under the M32 at junction one and stay on the ring road until reaching the UWE campus. However, a shared path for pedestrians and cyclists on Stoke Lane will remain open. Those involved in the MetroBus scheme said they were aware of the inconvenience the one-way system would cause and had “not take this decision lightly”. They said it would reduce by 37 weeks the time taken to complete the construction work and save up to £1 million.

attendance was just 10 or 11, opponents argued to keep the club going, at least while the review took place. But with only one youth worker left, it was believed to be the right time to look at how best to provide for the parish’s young people. During the closure, a survey was carried out to find out what kind of youth service was needed for the area. More than 1,000 young people got involved - most of them aged 11-14, with 15 and 16-year-olds the next biggest group. Councillors also visited a number of other youth clubs to see how they operated before inviting tenders to run the new club. Southern Brooks Community Partnership was chosen out of four applicants and it will run the facility initially for a year, with

an assessment to be carried out at the end of that time. Frampton Cotterell Parish Council linked up with Westerleigh and Winterbourne parish councils on the project, with Frampton putting in £10,000 of funding and the other councils each contributing £2,500. They will also get a South Gloucestershire Council grant for the first year. Frampton Cotterell parish clerk Kieran Warren said the club would continue to be based at the Brockeridge Centre. He said: “This has taken way longer than any councillor or I had wanted and the best estimate is for it to open around the end of July. “Promotion and advertising will now take place to make young people aware of the facility.”

The ‘Royal Group’ is crowned by Mike Riches, the head teacher of Iron Acton Primary.
Rain on the parade dampens May Day celebrations CELEBRATIONS to mark May Day were curtailed by bank holiday rain, but there was still enough time to get some of the traditional events completed. In Iron Acton, May Day started well but it came to an abrupt end at 1pm when the rain set in. There was time though for one maypole dancing set and the Royal Group were also crowned. In Winterbourne Down, the procession from Bradley Avenue to Down Road was led by the City of Bristol Pipeband and followed by the May Queen and her two attendants in an open-top sports car. Unfortunately the rain meant the Rainbows and Brownies couldn’t get involved in maypole dancing, but money was still raised for the Red Cross.

Celebration tea party held to mark completion of Ware Court upgrade
May, 2016
A £1 MILLION refurbishment has been finalised at Ware Court in Winterbourne, with a tea party held for residents to celebrate completion of the scheme. Merlin Housing Society spent the last year on the project to remove 19 bedsits at the older people’s community and create bigger one and two-bedroom flats. All of the flats have also been fitted with new kitchens, wet rooms, doors, windows and heating systems, while communal areas were completely revamped. Jean Lowe, who has lived at Ware Court for 30 years and is its oldest resident, was invited to officially re-open the renovated communal lounge by cutting a ribbon. She said: “It’s absolutely lovely now. Everyone loves their new homes and the communal areas. Residents Dave Williams, Mary Maby, Jean Lowe and Beryl Bidwell celebrate the re-opening of Ware Court with Merlin’s head of property investment, Richard Hopkins.

“We didn’t have any problems with the building work, there was no dust or sound, not even when they were knocking down walls. Everyone bent over backwards to help us while the work was happening. In fact it’s a little bit boring now that all the work has finished.” Project manager Mukhtar Ali said: “This was a challenging project because we kept half of

the residents on site while we were carrying out the work. “This meant that half way through the project, we had to move them all from one side of the building into the other side so we could finish the work.” Merlin said conversion of the bedsits was the result of the residents telling the society they did not want to live in that kind of accommodation.

Floral Friends fayre a big success FRAMPTON Cotterell is set to continue in bloom after a successful St George’s Day Fayre which raised over £900. The event, organised by Floral Friends of Frampton included plants and books to browse and buy, and competitions (including a treasure island map of the village). A painting competition, with the theme of St George and the Dragon, was held for children. Lena Clarke, the group’s secretary, said: “We are very

Colliery open day to give insight into coal mining industry at Ram Hill AN open day at Ram Hill colliery at the end of this month will give visitors the chance to learn about the important 19th century mining industry in Coalpit Heath. The pit was one of a number of separate sites operating in the area by the 1840s. Most of the coal produced went to Bristol for domestic heating and to fuel an increasing number of steam engines during the industrial revolution. But it closed in 1867 due to flooding and increased output at the neighbouring Frog Lane colliery. Great Western Railway bought the site 30 years later, with the direct rail link from London to South Wales just north of the works. The remains are now owned by South Gloucestershire Council, which manages the scheduled ancient monument with English Heritage in conjunction with the Friends of Ram Hill Colliery. The open day is on May 30 - Spring Bank Holiday Monday - from 10am-4.30pm, with guided tours and refreshments available from 10.30am.
Butcher’s shop back in Frampton Cotterell
Spotted in Henfield; possibly didn’t go to agricultural college…...
Local man Steven Richards has opened a new butcher’s shop in Church Road. Steven, known as Billy, grew up in the village and went to what is now Watermore School and then The Ridings. He remembers when Alan Gardner ran a butcher’s shop from the same premises and knows how popular a butchers used to be in the village. After being made redundant in December he decided to take the plunge and give it a go. The massive interest and positive comments from local people on Facebook gave Billy added confidence. A local family man with a five year old daughter at school in the area, Billy has set up a local business which will provide you with great quality meat, all sourced from within a 40 mile radius of the shop. Products include a great range of gluten free sausages, faggots and burgers which have proved very popular - and not just for those with food intolerances. With the ongoing support from the public, Billy hopes to serve you for many years to come.

THE hugely popular Music in the Meadows is set to return to Iron Acton. The two nights of music gets underway at the start of July. Acton Aid, who put on events to raise money for local good causes and charity are behind the events in the Parish Meadows. On Friday 1st July, the 4th Mash in the Meadows has four outstanding local bands. Several have played at Glastonbury and toured throughout Europe and one has played at Buckingham Palace. Elles Bailey and her band open the Mash. Elles has been dubbed the Blues Princess and her unique “gravelly” voice delivers a range of blues and soul numbers. Flash Harry are back by popular demand to play their energetic portfolio of Cajun and Balkan blues, folk and rock. Mad Apple Circus (three of their members grew up in Iron Acton) will play their original blend of horn-fuelled styles, built on Ska/Hip-Hop/Jazz and Latin grooves. Gee Baby I Love You headline the evening and promise genuine soul, raw funk and blues with professional, exhilarating showmanship. The Proms in the Meadows is on Saturday 2nd July, and is rather more upmarket. It’s now in its twelfth year, giving people to dress up, bring a picnic and enjoy music from the Bristol Millennium Orchestra and other local performers. This year the theme is Spanish but the evening will include the classic “Last Night at the Proms” finish. The event features The Bristol Millennium Orchestra and soloists from the Royal College of Music, Junior Fascinating Rhythm, The Iron

Acton Community Choir, The Kathryn Hurley Dance Academy, Fabulous Flamenco and as well as prizes for Best Spanish Hat. Spokesman, Richard Hunter said “People who have attended previous concerts have been so impressed at how a small village can put on such a professional event. Many people get together a group of their friends to hold a party within a party. I urge people to buy their Early Bird tickets before the end of May to save money and before they sell out as tickets are limited.” To buy tickets and for more information, visit www.actonaid. org.uk. Hawk and Owl Trust on the hunt for volunteers to boost its work VOLUNTEERS are needed by a bird of prey conservation group to help with practical work and promotion of its activities. The South Gloucestershire branch of the Hawk and Owl Trust was established in the early 2000s to help conserve the birds that were rapidly declining in the area. The volunteer-run group also works to increase knowledge and understanding of hawks and owls, as well as holding meetings from September to March in Iron Acton Parish Hall. Chairman Paul Golledge said: “These birds are some of the best indicators of the overall health of our environment because they are at the top of the food chain. “They provide an early warning of pollution and alert us to habitat destruction. Their survival is key to our own well-being.” He said despite legal protection, the birds continued to face many threats and were vulnerable to mounting human pressure, with their habitat destroyed, modified or fragmented and birds suffering from pollution, poisons, persecution and nest robbing. Mr Golledge said an important part of the group’s role was to work with farmers and landowners, offering practical help to manage and create improvements for habitats where owls and birds of prey could live, feed and breed successfully. He said: “This sort of work requires the good will of the farmer and landowner to allow areas of land to be managed in order to provide the right habitat and nest boxes. Sadly, natural nesting sites continue to disappear. “We have a dedicated team who, through research, experimentation and experience, have made nest boxes for the barn owl, tawny owl, little owl and kestrel. “They will erect these boxes in suitable locations following a successful survey of the habitat to provide nesting and roost sites to encourage more birds to the area.” The boxes are then monitored and the young recorded and ringed by licensed officials.” Anyone interested in the group should visit www.hawkandowl.org or email paul_golledge@hotmail.com for further information.
Dog training club closes after almost 50 years
A CLUB that has trained thousands of dogs in over four decades has closed. Frampton Cotterell Dog Training club was well known in the area and operated from Crossbow and The Park playing fields. The closure was prompted by some club members retiring which left too few people to run the outfit. Club secretary Jan Lasenby told the Voice; “I’m upset, and so are a lot of people; it’s been there almost 50 years. People are so busy, they can’t commit to the committee or to training.”

Winterbourne’s Woman is slimming star after loosing 5 stone A MEMBER of a local Slimming World group is celebrating after loosing 5 stone and gaining two awards. Liz Heath has gone from a size 22 to a size 12 in less than two years. Liz had a stroke at a very young age following the birth of her son. She decided to take action about her weight after visiting the doctors. She said: My story goes back a long time as I can remember. I have always been a ‘big girl’ and just tried to put it to the back of my head and not think about it. Each time I looked in the mirror I felt depressed and was walking around in size 22 clothes and weighed over 16 stone”. He daughter Steph had already joined Slimming World and helped her mum on her quest to slim down. Liz says life has changed for the better: “I feel great about the way I look. It’s the little things that mean the most, the comments, the pictures and the fact I can run without feeling out of breath all the time”.

Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice
Remain or Leave? An opportunity for your questions be answered ON 23rd June we will be asked to decide whether to remain in, or leave the European Union. It will be a once in a generation referendum, and I know some people are still struggling to decide; do we ‘remain’ or do we ‘leave’? I am hugely grateful to everybody who responded to my article asking whether it would be useful to hold a local debate on our membership of the European Union. I have been inundated with people sharing their thoughts on the referendum as well asking to hear my own. The main concern that is being raised with me is around the lack of information, with both campaigns seemingly contradicting each other. As your Local MP I want to ensure that everyone in our area is able to make that decision on the 23rd June, based upon as much information as possible, presented fairly by both sides. I have already published an impartial briefing on this issue on my website, with links to both campaigns which I hope will be of some help. I am delighted to tell Voice readers that on the 3rd of June, I will be hosting a debate on Britain’s relationship with the EU in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, 7:30pm – 9pm. The debate will involve a representative from
both the ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ campaigns, making their case and answering your questions. The evening is set to cover the main subject areas, including; the economy, sovereignty, security, immigration and trade. I am encouraging as many people as possible to submit questions in advance so I can ensure as many questions are answered as possible. I will be collating your questions beforehand and putting them to both campaigns along with an open question and answer session from the floor at the end. I am looking forward to our community coming together to ask these important questions and I hope the event will prove both informative and constructive as we draw closer to making this once in a generation decision on 23rd of June.

What type of nail person are you? Sexy, sophisticated or fashion conscious, this Spring there is a manicure to suit every mood. Fashionably Fun – why not try a tropical shade, this summer we will see some jewel like shades, strong purples, greens and orange Love – these are the classics dark reds, always popular and a great look Nudes – a very French look with sheer layers of pale pink or putted finished with a shiny top coat.
Glossy Hair
It’s all about glossy hair right now, with shorter hair back in style. Swoop your hair up and flick or quiff it back to give it that ‘just out of the pool look’. To achieve this look go for polish rather than a wet look products and start off with
smooth hair by running the straighteners over it first. Something tricky The eye lash; whatever you do, don’t do nothing. Just sweep of mascara and a red lip and you will be done. Plump those lashes with with false eye lashes or plumping mascara. If are using false lashes make sure you cut them to size and
apply the glue then wait 30 seconds for the glue to go sticky before you apply.
Something fresh

‘SPRING has sprung’ and we are now entering the month of May, a month which brings with it a number of festivities like the May Day celebrations marking the beginning of spring on the 1st, with its roots in pagan history. Many rural communities will hold maypole dancing, parties and feasts, baskets of flowers decorating village streets and barrels of real ale and cider being made ready for consumption, accompanied by the singing of traditional folk songs and ditties. May also brings International Workers Day, also known as Labour Day for which we receive a grateful Bank Holiday. It is a day when Socialism has historically celebrated the gifts of ‘the worker’ and the ‘Working Class’ and the contribution made by faithful workers to the wellbeing of the state. The end of the month holds the celebration of Pentecost (Whitsun), which this year falls on the 15th May, when Christians celebrate the birth of the Church and God’s gift of the Holy Spirit to his followers, empowering, strengthening and cajoling Christians to live out the Gospel in their lives. Christianity is not alone in having festivals in May, Judaism marks Holocaust Day and Lag B’omer. Islam marks Lailat ul Isra wa-l-miraj (The Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey and Ascent from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem) and Lailat-ul-Bara’ah (The Night of Forgiveness). Buddhist’s mark ‘Bodhi Day’ on the 21st May celebrating the Buddha’s enlightenment under

the Bodhi Tree and to bring us full circle, the Orthodox Christians this year celebrate Easter on the 1st May - break out the chocolate! May is also the month when the Catholic wing of Christianity (which is by far the world’s largest Christian denomination with 1.2 billion adherents) dedicates a month of celebration and devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, ‘The Queen of Heaven’. Whilst Jesus in his teachings and Ministry shows Christians how they might live out their lives in a transformed way, the way they see and worship God and equally the way in which they should treat and care for their fellow human beings is found in the ‘Great Commandment’ (Love your Neighbour) and in the ‘Golden Rule’ (do unto others…….). On the other hand Mary his mother gives us a clear insight that it is not impossible for humanity to live out what God yearns for from his creation. We can see in her a level of faithful obedience, devotion and love which each of us can truly aspire to and strive for in our Faith Journeys. May brings much and much is celebrated. It offers us once again the chance to reflect on the past, seek forgiveness for mistakes made, enables us to consider what we are and what we can be, gaining inspiration from the heroes and faithful of the past, but most of all it reminds us of future hope as we once again give thanks for God’s Grace and the empowerment his love brings for all people.

Around the W.I. Winterbourne Down W. I. WE welcomed Nicola Eaton from The Really Expensive Chocolate Company. She started making chocolate after her family gave her a present of a day’s training at Betty’s in Harrogate, 10 years ago. She explained where the cocoa beans are grown in tropics where there is a hot and humid climate. The Spanish made a thick bitter drink with the beans that Christopher Columbus brought back from the Tropics. Chocolate is made from cocoa mass and butter and milk can be added with sugar to make the chocolate we eat today. A few facts: In Britain we eat an average 10 kg. of chocolate per year per person. Cadbury’s chocolate has vegetable fat so will not temper (melt and set again). We then tasted champagne truffle chocolates and orange cream chocolates that were made while we watched. Nicola had a few chocolates of different
flavours such as ginger, raspberry and orange and chocolate numbers for sale. Our meeting in May is our resolutions meeting and on 2nd of June we have Robert Tinker talking on Interesting Nooks and Crannies in Bristol. All are welcome to join us at All Saints Church Hall at 7:3pm Frampton Cotterell WI WE had the opportunity to meet with Monica Cave, who came in to give us a talk on Guide Dogs. Monica was accompanied by Jan Peters and her guide dog Celia. Retired guide dog Jangle also came in to meet us all. None of us had any idea how much hard work goes into training the dogs – most are Labradors/Labrador crosses or German Shepherds as these breeds are easiest to train. The dogs are bred at the specialist training centre in Leamington, where at 6-7 weeks old they are passed out to puppy walkers for their initial training and familiarisation with different environments.

At 14 months they then return to Leamington for harness and specific task training. Jan told us that once a guide dog is allocated to its owner (sadly there is a waiting list as you might expect), a trainer then comes in every day for intensive training on routes to local shops, hospitals etc. – amazingly many dogs pick up the route after only one trip. Most dogs work for around 7 years before taking a wellearned retirement. We had a Beetle Drive social evening at Crossbow House earlier in the month, which was great fun. The Book Club went on a trip to the Bristol Old Vic to see Jeremy Irons and Lesley Manfield in A Long Days Journey Into Night, which was enjoyed after a lovely lunch on board The Glassboat. Our Darts team have continued to play a very successful season with the semi-finals being held against Bath on the 24th which will be followed by the finals at Coalpit Heath cricket club in May. We now have our summer meal out all booked up. The Globe is hosting a Greek night, so we will be sampling sharing
platters consisting of treats such as humous, olives, garlic mushrooms and feta salad. The meal will take place on the evening of June 16th, so we’ll also be hoping for some Greekstyle sunshine. As always, we are involved in the Frampton Festival in July, where we will be hosting our regular cake stall and selling copies of our very own members’ cookery book. Our other events coming up over the coming months will include craft demonstrations, a chance to learn about and try morris dancing and a presentation from a local awardwinning gardener. Visitors are welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. There is a charge of £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee. Special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our skittles and darts teams. Please search FramptonCottWI to find out more, and do like our page.

‘Do I need Orthotics?’ by the Podiatrists at Willow Brook Clinic
C
ALL them orthoses, call them orthotics, call them inserts, call them insoles, call them footbeds.....but call them something! Are they good? Do you really need them? Are they worth it? Not many of us were blessed with perfect feet! Very few of us have what is called a normal or neutral foot, meaning a foot that does not require any special care or support to maintain its shape when loaded with body weight. Orthotics are inserts added inside footwear to support the foot’s natural structure. Your feet are the base of support for your entire body, so they may affect its posture if they are tilted or not straight, just like the foundations of that famous tower in Italy! Not having a proper base on which to stand, can cause other issues with your body including problems with your posture and can cause pain in your feet, legs and lower back. There are many different structural problems with feet, from pronated feet and flat feet, to supinated feet or high arch feet. A podiatrist can tell you what type of feet you have.
STEAMED UP DOUBLE GLAZING? Don’t replace the Frames... just the Panes!
Broken or Damaged Windows? Faulty Hinges, Handles or Locks? Suffering Internal Condensation? 5 year guarantee on new double glazing.
Once you have established what type of feet you have, the next question to ask is: do you have pain anywhere, or do you suffer from a chronic injury that does not seem to heal? If the answer is no you probably do not need orthotics. But, if you have answered yes, then a visit to a podiatrist may be the solution you need to manage or even remove the pain. If the pain is located anywhere above your belly button, chances are orthotics will not help much, although they do improve posture. But if the pain is below the waist, then it may be helpful to try orthotics. You may find relief with orthotics, no matter what kind of foot you have. Even normal or neutral feet may find relief with orthotics from the extra support they provide. If you have any issues with your feet, seek the help of a podiatrist to give you the correct advice and to help you resolve your problem.

Special night as cinema comes to Yate IT was the night people had been waiting decades for, and for a lucky few there was a sneak preview of what Cineworld Yate is offering before the doors opened to the general public. A special gala night heralded the start of screenings at the Riverside development, with those invited able to enjoy canapés and a drink in the foyer before being ushered into screen 6. Instead of adverts and trailers, there were a few brief speeches before Yate’s mayor, councillor Tony Davis cut a reel of film to declare the cinema open. For those not at the screening of Florence Foster Jenkins, starring Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant, the doors opened just a few hours later at midnight for Captain America. Matt Eyre, Cineworld Senior Vice President of Operations, was at the event and told the Voice: “I think it’s a fantastic location, I think it’s a great little cinema for a lovely little town. I think it will do very well for us”. Steve Plank, the cinema’s General Manager admitted to a few big night nerves, but was looking forward to getting the cinema operational: “It’s a brand new build, she’s a premium design, it’s a real honour and privilege to be part of this and be the first general manager and head up this cinema, especially within a community that’s so supportive”.

Louise is a winner

The winner of our competition to get unlimited free films for a year at Cineworld was also at the gala event. Louise Leaver triumphed with her take of why she was the area’s biggest film fan: ‘Once Upon A Time’ (1944) there were two friends ‘Thelma & Louise’ (1991), Louise loved watching films so they met and got ‘On The Road’ (2012) to the new cinema in Yate. They knew it would be ‘Unforgettable’ (1996) and they were ‘Lucky’ (2011) to be at the opening night to see their favourite film ‘Withnail & I’ (1987). Help on offer for stammerers
LOCAL amateur dramatic group The Actonians are preparing to perform the classic play Cranford. Written by Elizabeth Gaskell and adapted for the stage by Laura Turner, it’s set in the mid-1800s and contains the most poignant and funniest observations of life in a rural village in Victorian England. The play runs from 19-21 May with tickets available at £8 from www.actonians. co.uk The production follows the staging of two successful workshops with Mark Danbury and Mark McGann. The group is also on the look out for new acting talent and is inviting potential actors to come along to one of their regular Wednesday night rehearsals at Iron Acton Parish Hall.
IT is a little ironic that I am contacting a publication called The Voice, when for the majority of my 63 years, I have had a severe stammer. In January 2000, I joined The McGuire Programme, a programme run by stammers to help other people that stammer. Since joining the programme and after having worked very hard on controlling my speech, it has enabled me to participate in many things that a stammerer would think impossible. I have coached numerous people within the programme in helping them with their speech. I have instructed some of our courses throughout England as well as in Antwerp and Mexico City. I became President of a local Speakers Club as well as having given several radio, newspaper and magazine interviews. We have a 4 day course starting in Bristol on 1st June
Why did our MP block this amendment? LUKE Hall stood with 293 other MPs and blocked an amendment that would have helped reunite unaccompanied refugee children with their families in the UK.

What’s in a name? NAMES can be misleading
follow us on Twitter @frome_val_voice
Names whose meaning was obvious when they were coined half a century or more ago are not so clear now, when society and attitudes have moved on. One organisation whose name seems to mislead some people is Christian Aid. People who have taken part in the house-to-house collection in May in recent years have found that some people are reluctant or refuse to give because the name has given them a wrong impression of what the charity is about. So, let me try to explain. The word ‘Christian’ is in the name because it is an agency of the churches in Britain and Ireland and its work is founded on Christian faith, inspired to show practical love and care for our neighbours. The word ‘Aid’ perhaps speaks for itself and yet it is here that the problem arises. Does Christian Aid imply that we are working to give aid only to Christians? The answer is an emphatic NO. Our neighbours are people of all faiths and none and so, working through partner organisations which know and understand the needs of their
29
own people, Christian Aid provides urgent, practical and effective assistance where need is great, tackling the effects of poverty as well as its root causes. We now work with more than 650 overseas partners in around 50 countries but 70 years on from our founding, the world isn’t getting any fairer. The plight of Syrian refugees is a human crisis on a scale not seen since World War II. 15 million people in East Africa face severe food shortages. People living in Bangladesh live in constant fear of flooding. The list goes on........ Poverty is an outrage against humanity. It robs people of dignity, freedom and hope, of power over their own lives. So we won’t stop now. We’ll carry on tackling the causes of poverty. We’ll continue to support local organisations to deliver real, practical change. Christian Aid has a vision – an end to poverty – and we believe that vision can become a reality. We believe in life before death.

We’re a friendly club and always welcome new players”.

Promotion hopes fade, relegation avoided and a cup final to forget - just another month at Frampton Athletic…. FOLLOWING a frustrating month in March, April started brighter for Frampton Athletic’s first team. The month started with a potentially tricky game, away to mid-table side Roman Glass St George Reserves. However, Frampton made light work of the match, with goals from Mike Beake, Darragh Enwright, Matt Johnson and George Griffin, Frampton secured a 4-0 victory. With confidence on the up, they then faced bottom of the table and local rivals Brimsham Green. Usually a fiercely contended game and this was no different. Bookings picked up by both sides in what was a tight contest, just edged by Frampton Athletic, who ended up 4-3 winners thanks to a late winner from Frampton veteran Mike Beake. Beake was on the scoresheet again in the following mid-week fixture, which saw Frampton travel across Bristol to face Lawrence Rovers. Another tight contest ensued and another last gasp winner, this time by Jack Pitcher, saw Frampton scrape another 4-3 victory. Frampton’s promotion hopes came crashing down as they were hammered 6-0 at home to title chasers, Sea Mills Park in another midweek evening game. Frampton are now resigned to the fact that a top half finish is the best that they could hope for and this was evident in the next 2 games, which saw some lacklustre performances, resulting in a 0-0 draw with Seymour United and a 1-1 draw with Shaftesbury Crusade. Both team would normally be seen as easily winnable games for Frampton. Frampton finished the month with a 12 o’clock kick off away to AEK Boco, who still have a chance to take the title. Frampton battled well throughout the game and looked to be taking a point home with them, but a goal in the 80th minute saw Frampton head home empty handed and AEK Boco’s title challenge continue. Frampton finish their season with an away trip to Hambrook on Saturday 7th May. Frampton’s Reserve side continued their struggle to pick
up some much needed points in April. Having last tasted victory at the start of November they were already on a 7 game winless streak. This didn’t improve throughout April. With the First team pulling on the resources of the Reserves, the Reserves in turn were pulling on resources from the ‘A’ team and difference in standard across the leagues took its toll on the players and the results. Defeats against Seymour United (0-1), Hanham Athletic (0-8), Totterdown United (0-1) and Cribbs ‘A’ (0-2) left Frampton Athletic Reserves second from bottom, 2 points behind Seymour United above them and 6 points ahead of Soundwell Victoria, who had 2 games in hand over Frampton. Frampton’s next 2 fixtures saw them up against both teams. They went into the Seymour game knowing that a win would likely see off the challenge from Soundwell Victoria, but a loss would also likely condemn them to 12th spot, which risked relegation. Frampton had numerous chances, but the Seymour goalkeeper was in top form. Seymour came close to scoring the winner late in the game as a close range header cannoned off the crossbar. The match finished 0-0, which suited Seymour, rather than Frampton. Going into the game against Soundwell Victoria, this was now a must win game to ensure Division 1 survival. Frampton’s Reserve side duly delivered in a game that they dominated and romped to a 6-3 victory in front of a good crowd at Beesmoor Road. This win put them above Seymour United, who were due to play the following night. By the Saturday, Seymour had lost their midweek game, which meant that Frampton were a single point ahead of Seymour, with both teams due to play their last game of the season. Frampton faced a home match against Nicholas Wanderers, with Seymour facing an even tougher game against AEK Boco ‘A’. Frampton battled well throughout the game, but eventually succumbed to a 3-2 defeat, but news soon filtered through that Seymour had lost 2-0 to AEK Boco. Frampton

secured 11th spot and hopefully secure their Division 1 status for next season. Frampton Athletic ‘A’ started April with their long awaited Cup Final against Thornbury Baptist Church, played under the floodlights the GFA Headquarters Oaklands Park. Frampton started the game well and took the lead mid-way through the first half thanks to a Liam Downer penalty. But Thornbury scored an equaliser on the stroke of half-time, which seemed to knock the stuffing and the confidence out of the Frampton players, who came out for the second half and completely capitulated, ending up on the wrong side of a 6-1 score line. The result somewhat flattered Thornbury, but the fact was that Frampton’s players ran out of steam come the end of the game and with numbers players carrying injuries, it was always going to be a big ask.
It was proving quite a struggle to find 11 fit players to pull together for the ‘A’ team on Saturdays. This situation resulted in Frampton’s ‘A’ side having to forfeit 3 of their league games in April. However, they did manage to get a further 5 games played, mostly in midweek fixtures. In general, when they did play, they played well, and needed to, as they were staring down the barrel of relegation to Division 5. Following a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Sea Mills ‘A’, they then went onto the win games against Cribbs ‘B’ (1-0), Stanton Drew (4-1) and Yate Athletic (5-0). This has seen them moved up to 10th, but they could still be dragged down to 12th by the end of the campaign. The ‘A’ side face 3 more fixtures against Yate Athletic Reserves, Lawrence Rovers Reserves and Mendip Broadwalk ‘A’ as they look to confirm their fate for next season!

WIA student makes international football debut
14-YEAR-OLD Harriet Lambe is celebrating after representing the Republic of Ireland Women’s under 16’s football team. She’s now been selected for a tournament in Hungary this month. Harriet, who’s also a talented cricketer, trained with the squad during the Easter holidays before playing in the 2-0 and 4-0 victories against Wales U17’s within the space of a few days. Irish coach, Sharon Boyle said “We did very well. Every player did their job and we were delighted with them.… The girls stood up really well against a strong side and particularly when you consider that they were giving away a year.” The friendlies were arranged in order to challenge the girls before the squad was chosen to travel to Hungary for the tournament between hosts Hungary, The Republic of Ireland, Czech Republic and Poland. Rob Phillips from Winterbourne International Academy said “We’re incredibly proud of Harriet and expect her achievement will help inspire our other female students who play football for our successful WIA team.” Harriet, pictured left.

Pucklechurch celebrate league safety PUCKELCHURCH Ladies Hockey club have secured their future in Berkeley Division 1. In the end it went down to the last day of the season, and a little help from other teams, as captain Lisa Whitehead reports. With 5 games left Puckle started with a home game against Old Bristolians. We started off well and a cracking short corner strike from Louise Northam got us on the scoreboard, followed by 2 further goals from Emily Pollock and Sophie Edwards. However, poor marking and play against a strong team saw the final score 9-3 to Old B’s. With only 10 players and no goalie, we would next travel to play 3rd in the league, Yate. Being a player down, we all had to work very hard especially against such a good team. Yate got the upper hand and won 5-0. Although exhausted, the Puckle girls were pleased with their performance. One of the most entertaining games of the season - against top
Pucklechurch celebrate a vital victory in their fight against relegation of the league Stroud was next at the WIA. Fielding just 11 players we knew it would be another tough one. It would prove to be a fast and furious game with goals coming from both sides. The final score was a 3-2 defeat. Clinging onto 7th place, we had to win our last 2 games to guarantee our spot in Div 1. After trying field a team with many players unavailable, Caz Britton was called upon to come
out of retirement to help us out. Half time against Lydney saw Pucklechurch 2-0 up, with both goals coming from forward Em Pollock. However, Lydney came back fighting and scored one of their own, but in the end Pucklechurch held on for a 2-1 victory. The final day saw a must win match at home against Avonmouth who were just 1 point behind us and who had a
game in hand. It was nail-biting stuff with Avonmouth taking the lead. Pucklechurch hit back, Rhian Phillips hit the back board, sending the crowd and team wild. Time ran out and the game finished in a draw. The team’s fate would now lie in Avonmouth’s hands as they played their final match against Yate. Yate won, meaning Pucklechurch were safe.
Promotion celebrations for netballers after tight finish FRAMPTON Cotterell Netball Club has been promoted for the fifth season in a row after a nail biting end to the season for the first team. They began April with a close win over Bristol Storm – final score was 29-25. It was an all-round team performance, with Jazz Bartlett, Helen Long, Carol Rowson and Emily Dible all being voted as Players of the Match! This secured them much needed points going into their next game against DHT. They managed a comfortable victory over DHT, with a final score of 49-25. Their final game of the season was a top of the table clash against Ashton Aces. Both teams were level on points, and Frampton needed a victory to win the league. A loss within 10 points would have put them at risk of missing out of promotion. It was a fantastic finale to the season for the firsts, with a final victory 33-28. The second team had a difficult April, with games against the top two teams in the league.
The fist team celebrate promotion after their game against Ashton Aces These were both great matches, with the team playing their best games of the season. They faced Olveston on 23rd April, who were top of the table by some way. This was a close game,

with Olveston put on the back foot from the start. The game was level for mot of the match, but Olveston ran away with it in the final quarter, and the game
ended in a 18-15 loss. The seconds then faced Skylarks, who were 2nd in the table. The team were ahead by one after the 2nd quarter, but Skylarks overtook in the third and it finished with a 28-24 loss, putting the seconds in third place in the league with one game yet to play. The end of season awards saw deserving players recognised for their contribution to the Club. Versatile Sally Harding won Most Improved Player and Helen Long won the Coaches Award for her application in training and for moving seamlessly from 2nd to 1st team. The 1st Team voted Emily Dible as their Team Player of the Year and Camilla Smith was 2nd Team Player of the Year. Frampton’s coach, Amy Warren was presented with flowers as a thank you for all her advice and support. Emily Harris, the Club’s new Chair, was voted as Club Player of the Year for her leadership of the Club.

Frampton escape Frampton U-12’s shine in relegation on last weekend their end of season games
FOR the second season in a row, Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club have avoided relegation on the last weekend of the season. Anything other than a win against St Mary’s Old Boy’s would have meant dropping into Gloucester 1 division for the first time since 2006. But playing at home, Frampton turned in their best performance of the season. Although it was a tight first 10 minutes, Frampton started to gain the upper hand in the scrum and with a five metre scrum, pushed close to the line. Josh creed picked and was stopped on the line, only for Rocco Whitehead to touch the ball down after a quick ruck. Frampton started to dominate the play and with quick ball out to the fly half, Matt Lawrence stepped through 4 players to touch down under the posts. The next try came from Frampton pressurising the St
Mary’s 22m line and Josh creed went in to score the first of his four tries of the day. In the final attacking play of the first half Matt Lawrence showed his side-stepping skills to touch down and covert his try to make it 26-0 at the break. Josh Creed scored his second early in the second period to make it 33-0. However, Frampton started to lose focus and poor tackling allowed St Mary’s to score two tries and pull the score back to 33-14. Frampton weathered the comeback and produced a fine spell to score 28 unanswered points. At the final whistle the score was 61-14, with Matt Lawrence getting a personal tally of 26 points. The players made sure they celebrated Frampton’s survival to play Gloucester s Premier league rugby next season.
Clevedon 0 Frampton Cotterell 8 Frampton boys had two 12-a-side contests on the last day of the season, the first against Clevedon. Frampton gained early possession and following a scrum won by Matt, Rory who was stepping in at scrum half found Jamie and he ran across the whole length of the pitch to cross over in the corner to open the scoring. More good work by Frampton allowed Matt to pick up and his short burst of speed took him over the line for the next try. A good tackle by Jamie shortly after saved a certain Clevedon score and Fram were on the attack again, this time Roy with the surging run and his short pass to Gabe saw him cross over to extend their lead. There was still enough time right at the end of the half for Nick to pick up and his weaving run through the Clevedon defence saw him cross over for a convincing half time score line of 4-0. The second began as the first had ended with Frampton in the ascendancy. A line-out for Frampton won by Nik and his flick to Jamie was a repeat of his first half score, crossing the pitch for the try in the corner. Straight from the kick off it was Marcus whose push forward found Jamie to score his third try of the game. Nik’s powerful run extended Frampton’s lead and with time running out there was just enough for one final score, Gabe who again bursting through to make the final score 8-0. Frampton Cotterell 2 Yatton 2 With a very short break Frampton took the field again and with only a few minutes gone Rory find Jamie whose short pass to Matt saw him cross over for a try. From the kick off Frampton were on the attack again and a scrum won by Fram was flipped back to Rory and Jamie was on hand again to power his way over to extend the visitors lead. With the temperature rising Fram were visibly tiring and the game became scrappy. Fram were up against it and the pressure told when Yatton pushed forward and a dive across the line saw the scores level at 2.-2.
Frampton Colts play last game
FRAMPTON Cotterell Colts have played their last home game before some of the players moved into the seniors. Frampton finished mid-table in the Somerset Colts League in a season that has seen them visit new clubs throughout Somerset. Two late tries by Wells meant they finished with a 28-14 loss, but there were two great tries for Carl Redgrave and Dan ‘Brizzley Bear’ Harris with two fine conversions from Lewis Oakley . Jimmer Merrick was given the man of match award for a fine display of line out throwing. Next season Mike Weaver will take over from Phil Wiltshire as head coach and he will finalise the new team over the summer. One position has been confirmed and that is Helen Smith as the
official Mini Bus driver. Back row (l-r) : Mike Weaver , Doug Colwill, Seamus , Fraser Crawford, Jimmer Merrick , Carl
