Frampton Cotterell facing traffic lockdown RESIDENTS of Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath face a year of traffic chaos with 6 roads being shut at their junction with the Badminton Road to stop rat running once major ring road work on the Bromley Heath Viaduct starts later in the summer. People trying to get to Winterbourne Down also face inconvenience with three more roads being closed. South Glos Council is due to start essential work on the Bromley Heath Viaduct section of the Ring Road in July. With that section of the road reduced to one lane each way, major delays are expected, and the council has proposed the measures to stop commuters using small roads in Frampton Cotterell instead. Local residents and businesses have expressed deep concern that the measures will leave the village cut off and leave Badminton Road and Church Road gridlocked at rush hour.

Bake off battle on cards at school fete PEOPLE are being challenged to prepare their best bakes as a Frampton school gets ready for their summer fair. Frampton Cotterell C of E School wants to get entries from the community and not just the school in the bake off. There are five classes in the show; one for adults and four for children of different age groups. There’s also a Best in Show award for the overall winner. Entries will need to be brought to the school hall by 10.15am on the day. Entries cost £1 each. All entries and winners will be displayed during the fete on July 1. Commenting on the cuts, Claire said: “Most local primary schools in this area face losing the equivalent of two teachers each and secondary schools each face losing up to 16 teachers. - but Theresa May doesn't care. “Under the Conservatives, funding per pupil is set to see the biggest cuts in a generation, while billions of pounds are being spent on divisive plans to expand grammars and free schools.”

Parish leaders repeat opposition to Woodlands Farm housing plan despite changes to scheme SOME changes have been made to the plan to build up to 215 homes at Woodlands Farm, Coalpit Heath. Developers said the amendments answered a number of issues raised by South Gloucestershire Council over proposals for the site, which the house builders have called Blackberry Park. Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes are behind the outline application, which has been met with objections from parish leaders and a large number of local residents. One of the changes made now restricts the part of the site where there would be taller, two-and-a-half or three-storey buildings to a small central area. But Westerleigh Parish Council has repeated its objection to the size of the development. It said: “The numbers of homes, and therefore the

associated numbers of adults and children, will put excessive pressure on the limited infrastructure of schools, doctors and recreational facilities. “The levels of car ownership will have a major impact on traffic and parking, particularly causing problems at peak times at the junction of Park Lane and Badminton Road. “The proportion of these new homes to existing numbers will have a significant impact on the character of this rural community.” It also said the site was not mentioned in South Gloucestershire’s core strategy document, which identified areas for development. It said: “As part of the West of England Combined Authority, South Gloucestershire awaits a new joint spatial policy which will redefine development needs and, therefore, this application for major development outside

allocated areas is premature and unnecessary.” The site is regarded locally as an important green space but the developers said it was not in the green belt or of high landscape value, was not covered by any ecological designations and was

not at risk of flooding. They said the homes would also meet a housing shortfall in the district. A previous scheme for 380 homes on the site was rejected after a major campaign.

Clerk leaves parish council THE clerk to Frampton Cotterell Parish Council, Kieran Warren, is leaving after 8 years to take up a post at the Lower Severn Internal Drainage Board, an organisation that assesses flooding risks from Avonmouth to Hereford. Kieran came to the parish council after spells at Northavon Council, South Glos Council and Thornbury Town Council. He said; “It’s been challenging, interesting and more enjoyable than I ever expected if I’m being honest.” The new clerk is local Frampton man David Bentley.

George decided he wanted to raise as much money for Macmillan after they provided his mum and the family with support following the diagnosis. He and three friends from Frenchay School; Charlotte Wakeman, Poppy Williams and William Elgar, decided to swim as far as they could in an hour. Between them they swam 3864m (2.4 miles). They have raised £1150 with money still coming in.

Police cadets abseil for South Glos charities

Slashed tyres leave big bill VANDALS caused damage estimated at more than £2,000 when they slashed tyres on a number of vehicles in Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath. Police received 19 reports of criminal damage in the space of a week in May. The Frampton Cotterell incidents happened in Beesmoor Road, Lower Chapel Lane, Meadow View, Brookside Drive, Rectory Road and Watermore Close. Vehicles in Station Road and The Close, Coalpit Heath, were also damaged. The vandalism came after previous incidents in the locality in March, when ten vehicles had either windows smashed, side mirrors hit off or tyres slashed. A GROUP of Volunteer Police Cadets have raised money for local charities after abseiling down Bridewell police station in Bristol. Nine teenagers and three cadet leaders from the South Gloucestershire unit took up the challenge and raised more than £600 for local charities, including Shopmobility, South Gloucestershire Chinese Association and the South Gloucestershire Parents and Carers group. Cadet leader Sergeant Steve Ives said: “This was a really good event thanks to excellent support from the Avon and Somerset Police rope access team. Some of the cadets were very nervous and yet overcame their fears, all in the name of charity. We're all very proud of them.

Playing field team need cash after council drops help THE team that manages Beesmoor Road playing field in Frampton Cotterell needs new volunteers to get involved and help secure the future of the facility. The management committee is scrambling to find extra cash after the withdrawal of council help. It faces unexpected costs after parish council leaders discovered the authority did not own the land as had previously been thought. That meant certain work the council had done up to then, such as cutting the grass, has fallen on the shoulders of the management committee. There are only a handful of volunteers now on the committee, which is also looking to boost its income to help keep the site in the condition required. The cost the grass cutting alone is about £2,000 a year,

whilst the committee’s annual turnover is only about £4,000.

n NEWS the parish council, although run in trust to the community. He said the council had been happy to cut the grass and carry out maintenance but now the situation had changed. He said the field had a football pitch used by Frampton Athletic Football Club, a sports pavilion and children’s play area. Between £1,500 and £2,000 a year is made through use of the site for regular car boot sales and the football club’s use of the pitch. Mr Talbot said in most years, costs were covered and the footballers helped by doing some necessary work themselves. He said: “There is a lot of work to be done and we are conscious that we have to keep the playing field open. “But we are about half a

In the worst case scenario, all the committee members could resign and then I don’t know what would happen. “We need a certain number of people to help maintain the site so would like to have more committee members. “We are also looking to start Sunday football there, possibly with a junior team or a women’s team using it, so would like to hear from anyone interested.” “As far as the grass is concerned, we will either have to find a contractor ourselves to do the job or look to buy more equipment, which is an added expense and we don’t have the storage facilities.” Mr Talbot can be contacted via the Frampton Athletic website.

n NEWS HUNDREDS of South Gloucestershire parents, including parents from the Winterbourne International Academy, have been taking action in protest against cuts to education funding. The Fair Funding For All Schools campaign began in the spring as it became clear that a proposed new national funding formula, designed to reduce inequality in the way education budgets were allocated, was not going to benefit 98 per cent of schools, including those most in need. As reported in last month’s Voice, more than 300 people attended the first South Glos meeting in Hambrook on April 6, the day after campaigners had urged councillors to back their concerns. Theresa May’s decision to call a snap general election brought the matter into sharper focus, with supporters being encouraged to question candidates about their views on school funding and a number of hustings meetings being organised. Parents rise up to battle school funding cuts receives some of the lowest per-pupil funding in the country so head teachers, school staff, parents and students are angry that they will face more realterms cuts in the coming years. Some schools are warning parents that the pressure on their budgets - including increased pension and National Insurance contributions and rising bills will mean some tough decisions. Staple Hill Primary governors have written to families saying the school faces a £100,000 cut in the 2018-19 financial year - equivalent to a monthly contribution of £33 per child. “The school needs to take drastic action,” they say. “We will be looking at options such as: * reducing staffing levels * changes to school hours * increasing class sizes * reducing provision such as

breakfast clubs, after-school clubs and school trips." Eric Mutch, a parent governor at the school, told Downend Voice: "These cuts will affect every parent, regardless of their political persuasion." About 100 parents and teachers attended an Education Question Time at Abbeywood School chaired by Dr Lisa Harrison of UWE Bristol. The four candidates contesting the Filton & Bradley Stoke seat agreed that schools had received more money but increases in student numbers and other costs meant head teachers faced a real-terms funding gap. Jack Lopresti, who was MP for the area from 2010-17, was consistently booed when he argued that the Conservatives had put put more funding into schools, with audience members

saying it did not reflect the actual needs. Concerns were expressed about the threat to the jobs of teachers and teaching assistants and the impact on children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. South Glos and Bristol parents, teachers and many children joined a Fair Funding for Schools march in Bristol on May 20, with an estimated turnout of 5,000. Councillors of all parties on South Gloucestershire Council, at its annual meeting on May 17, welcomed the actions of the Fair Funding for all Schools campaigners. They unanimously passed a motion praising and endorsing the group's aims and vowing to write to the Government immediately after the election on June 8 calling for increased funding for all schools.

Medieval Barn looks to whisk you back in time AN historic barn in Winterbourne is giving you the chance to go back to the Middle Ages with a special Medieval Fayre Living history group The Company of Chivalry will be providing a vivid display of life in a medieval encampment during the 100 Years' war. The event, on Sunday 11 June, will give a chance to find out how men and women lived, worked, and fought in the 14th century. There will be a programme of talks and demonstrations, showing cooking, clothing, skills and crafts and a display of military combat. It’s the start of a month of special events, with the Barn hosting A Story of Early Music on Sunday 25 June at 2.30pm. Traffic chaos feared in Frome valley as major ring road work looms Residents urged to attend consultation event to air their concerns RESIDENTS in Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath face a year of severe disruption as major work is set to get underway on the Bromley Heath viaduct section of the Avon Ring Road. A total of nine roads will be closed off to traffic in the Frome Valley, including 6 roads in Coalpit Heath as South Gloucestershire Council tries to stop commuter rat runs through Frampton Cotterell. Beesmoor Road, Bell Road, Woodend Road, Heathcote Road and The Causeway will all be shut at their junctions with the Badminton Road. Park Lane will be closed just past the railway bridge. All traffic will be forced to use Church Road. Further closures through Cuckoo Lane, Bury Hill and Bromley Heath Road are designed to stop rat running through Moorend. Access to Winterbourne will be affected too, with motorists unable to go straight over the ring road from

It seems like they’re blocking all roads so it will be impossible to get out of Frampton Cotterell or Winterbourne.” “For local businesses it’s an absolute nightmare. It’s so unclear and we have so little knowledge. Planning hasn’t been brilliant. How is anyone going get to work, it’s going to affect everybody.” She’s also worried about how her son Alex will get into Bristol each morning to attend Cathedral School. Laura Price, co-owner Salon 98 on Woodend Road just yards from one proposed closure, was unaware of the plans until contacted by Frome Valley Voice. She said; “It’s going to be absolute carnage, absolutely madness, and it will affect us big time. From a business point of view it’s hard on us, because of appointments. I can see a lot people cancelling because of the hassle of getting here - Church Road is going to be an absolute nightmare.” But local councillor Dave Hockey said the proposals were not a done deal and urged

local people to attend a local consultation on the plans. He said the council’s officers would listen to the public and councillors. He told Frome Valley Voice: “If there are very heavy concerns about the road closures, South Gloucestershire Council will have to bear in mind their opinions.” “There’s no point staging the meeting if you don’t take into account residents strong views. Let’s see what happens.” The consultation is being held at Frampton Cotterell C of E School on Tuesday 13 June from 6pm The work on the ring road viaduct between Downend and the Hambrook traffic lights means traffic will be reduced to one lane each way as engineers shore up the older of the two viaducts. South Gloucestershire council expects long delays, saying queues will reach beyond Emersons Green on way and the M32 the other at peak times. In consultation documents it says; “We aim to working [sic] closely with local businesses, health care providers, schools and community organisations so that the traffic management for this scheme provides the best solution we can achieve for all needs and methods of transport.” It is urging large employers in the area to look hold meetings away from peak times, explore flexible working including working from home and to look at alternative transport methods including cycling. It says; “We would also encourage local residents to see if they are able change their travel choice or time of travel”

Decision time for Frome Valley voters

June 8 is decision time as the people in the Frome Valley Voice area go to the polls for the general election. We’ve given the four candidates running in the Thornbury and Yate constituency the chance to present their case to the voters. Here’s what they had to say.

Luke Hall, Conservative candiate As a local man, who lives in Yate and who grew up in South Gloucestershire, it has been the biggest honour of my life to represent our community in Parliament. I have strived to be an active and passionate local representative for our area, influencing the government on the issues that affect us locally. Having lived here all of my life, I have been able to make progress on the issues that matter to us, like securing £500,000 to finally kick start junction 18A onto the M4 after a 30 year delay, a project that will help relieve the congestion that has affected our communities for too long. I have also been working to secure investment into local broadband – we have seen £1.7 billion being invested in extending superfast broadband provision, with 7,398 premises being connected locally and more planned later this year. I have also been fighting to protect our local green spaces in places like Thornbury, Charfield and Coalpit Heath, and have twice ensured the Government rejected the idea of supporting a new 3,000 house ‘Garden Village’ at Buckover, sending a powerful message to the Council and Developers that these poorly made plans are not right for our area. I am pushing to see better local bus services like the 82 to Southmead Hospital and have now secured a full review of bus serves in our area, which will look at bringing the 82 back to Chipping Sodbury High Street. Locally, I have worked with the Council to secure money for local health services, like the redevelopment of Thornbury Hospital, which will see up to 80 new NHS rehabilitation and mixed use care beds and money invested into Thornbury Health Centre. On all of these issues, having a Conservative MP locally means we have influence here and in government, getting the best deal for South Gloucestershire, rather than a lone voice shouting from the side-lines. If I am re-elected as the local MP, I will be using the influence I have in Government to see these issues through. If you are happy with our schools, NHS, public transport, Power grid all being sold off to investors, instead of being run for the benefit of the people then vote for the same. Bring back control of our public services from profit driven investors, give our children a future that will not be filled with debt from student loans or pay day loans, as they struggle to find work with over 7 million jobs predicted to be lost to mechanicalisation. We see it every day now in McDonalds, Tesco, your local petrol station, jobs that were part time or needed when you were a student or retired are now disappearing; this is real and happening now, not in 10 years. We need a Government with the vision to see that we need our education system to be changed so that you no longer teach to the test but learn life skills and plan for the job we will need in the years to come. Invest in the NHS, not sell off millions of pound worth of contracts to private companies. Bring our trains and buses back under local and national authority control. How can the Government say only they can be trusted with the economy, when they have held wages back and in real terms the UK workers are 10% worse off after 7 years and the National debt has risen from £880b to £1.7t in 7 years? Teresa May said 6 times there would not be a snap election, Jacob Reece-Mogg said ‘the Tories would appear deeply opportunistic if there was’, who do you believe?

Brian Mead, Labour candidate It is a honour to have been selected as the Labour candidate for the Thornbury and Yate constituency and I look forward to meeting as many residents as possible in the election campaign. My background is that I have lived in North Bristol and South Gloucestershire my whole life and served as a Filton Town Councillor for the past 6 years. I currently work in the security industry, having previously worked for several years on the railways where I held local, regional and national positions in the RMT union. I am an active member of UNITE the Union, the Cooperative Party where I am local Chair and I am Secretary of Bristol Speedway Supporters Club. I am standing in this election to give people the opportunity to vote for Labour's policies of investment in public services and against the austerity agenda. This government's austerity policies have left tens of thousands of low and middle income people in the Thornbury and Yate constituency worse off in real terms than they were before 2010. The Labour alternative I will be fighting for will see increased investment in the NHS, education, and social care. Creeping privatisation of the NHS will be reversed, divisive and discredited plans for grammar schools will be scrapped, and a game changing programme to build social housing will be rolled out. Zero Hours contracts will be banned and the minimum wage will be increased to £10 per hour. Liberal Democrat candidate We all know Mrs May will be Prime Minister after the election but she will not be on the ballot paper here. The real question is which of the local candidates will best stand up for our area? My record as a councillor over the last ten years shows that I am a strong voice standing up for our community. I have campaigned with local people - and won - on issues from broadband to protecting green spaces, transport to health. I have lived in the constituency for 17 years and am bringing up my family here. I spent a decade working in the software industry, including for local small businesses. So I understand the pressures on our communities. As a parent with children at local schools, I share concerns over this Government’s funding cuts. Most local primary schools face losing the equivalent of two teachers each - and secondary schools up to 16 teachers. The Government has left the local NHS chronically underfunded, with delays doubling at Southmead A & E. Its damaging approach to the Brexit negotiations is putting local jobs at risk. As your MP, I will campaign for investment in jobs and training, more funding for our schools and an extra £26m for the NHS and social care. I want to make sure we have truly affordable housing, with transport infrastructure and services to support it, without destroying our much-valued countryside. I will fight to protect the “triple lock” introduced by Steve Webb that makes sure pensions keep pace with wages and inflation. I will campaign to protect the environment and want to give the people, not politicians, the final say on the Brexit deal. The Conservative MP here voted the way the Government told him to every time. Having worked closely with Steve Webb for many years, I know what a difference a strong local MP can make. The Filton and Bradley Stoke constituency covers a part of Winterbourne, so we have included candidate statements for this constituency in our election special.

Eva Fielding, Liberal democrats A Great Deal or No Deal is what I will offer you. The West of England is a net contributor of taxes to the Treasury, and Filton & Bradley Stoke residents are well aware of that. Products made here are consumed the world over and the innovation in advanced engineering with companies such as Airbus, Rolls-Royce and GKN and their supply-chains places Filton & Bradley Stoke at the leading edge of aerospace technology development. Sadly the jobs at all of these great companies could be at risk if the Deal brought back from Brussels just isn’t good enough. Liberal Democrats are offering the voters of Filton & Bradley Stoke a chance to reject the deal we are presented with from the EU if it’s not good enough. If it’s a great Deal then we’ve all won, but if our economy, health or freedoms are at risk then we need to decide whether we should accept the Deal and leave the EU or to refuse the Deal and renegotiate to Remain in the EU on better terms. We need to urgently address the desperate shortage of skilled builders needed to produce the housing we need and I will also tirelessly campaign for fairer funding in our schools, rail electrification and the scrapping of the Severn Bridge tolls.

Labour will integrate the NHS and social care for older and disabled people. Working families are set to be, on average, over £1,400 worse off a year. Meanwhile, the Conservatives have handed out tax breaks to those at the top. I'm a Trade Unionist, a working mum and I have been a local councillor. I care about what happens in parliament and how that affects my constituents.

We had 12 reports of tyres being slashed in the Beesmoor Road, Lower Chapel Lane, Meadow View and Brookside Drive areas of Frampton Cotterell and in Station Road and The Close, Coalpit Heath. Bridleway claimed on route of former pit railway line AN application has been made to add a bridleway to the definitive map to run between Broad Lane, Ram Hill, and Frog Lane, Coalpit Heath. South Gloucestershire Council has received user and documentary evidence to support the application. There are claims of public use of the route dating back to 1949, while maps from 1830 show the claimed route was once a mineral railway line running to and from the Frog Lane pit. Scouts spruce up library garden THE garden at Winterbourne Library is ready for summer after local scouts helped to tidy it up. 1st Winterbourne Down & Buryside Scout Group worked on the community garden as part of the local community project

n AROUND THE W.I. Winterbourne Down WI AT our last meeting our speaker was James Cross who has been head gardner at The Bishops Palace in Wells for 13 years. The gardens cover 14 acres and are divided into different areas. There are four main gardeners and a number of volunteers who help James. The first gardens date back to 1206 and over the years have undergone various changes and styles of planting as per the fashion of the day and the wish of the Bishop at the time. James and his team have done a lot of replanting in the herbaceous borders to give a longer display of flowers. He told us that in 1340 Bishop Ralph had fortifications built around the gardens and a moat was built which has to be dredged and kept clean. The famous swans and cygnets swim on the moat. We were shown sketches and slides of the various trees, shrubs, bulbs and flowers that are, and have been, in the gardens with Wells Cathedral as a magnificent back drop. There were also two reports, firstly that some of our members

visited Dyrham Park and had an afternoon tour and talk of the gardens. They noted how lovely the flowers and tulips were in the newly laid out beds. Two of our members and their husbands went to the Keynsham Methodist Church Hall to listen to Jill Toman give a talk on "A Photographers Visit to Tibet and Nepal". Jill, a retired lady, trekked with a small party of like minded photographers across difficult terrain capturing on camera, stunning scenery, buildings, local town life and weather conditions of these two countries. At the May Day Carnival, we had our usual table selling cakes, jams, marmalades, breads and crumbles. Although everyone was expecting it to rain the weather stayed dry so a lot of people came to support the event. All are welcome to join us at our meetings in All Saints Churchill Hall. Winterbourne Evening W.I. Our May meeting was very well attended. Instead of a speaker this month we were very fortunate to

enjoy a fashion show with clothes provided by M&Co. of Yate for charity. They had agreed to provide the clothes for eight of our members to model. Each model had previously visited the M&Co shop to select two outfits, one casual and one for a more formal occasion.

Most of the ladies had never walked the catwalk before and were very anxious but performed like professionals on the night. Many of the members said they would be going to Yate the very next morning to get some of the outfits for themselves.

n FLORAL FRIENDS Primroses along Church Road Floral Friends volunteers have planted primroses – which had been kindly donated by a local resident – along Church Road. Hopefully they will grow well and naturalise along the roadside banks.

Wildflower Planting

Floral Friends have been busy sowing wildflowers with the help of local schoolchildren. Frampton Cotterell C of E Primary School Gardening Club helped to sow wild flower seeds at The Park. They also planted sunflower seeds in pots to look after at school; they will then plant them out with the wild flowers in June. The schoolchildren showed a keen interest in pollinators and wild life and will compete to see who can grow the tallest sunflower. Pupils from Watermore Primary School helped Floral Friends volunteers to plant 80 wild flower plugs in the Glebeland meadow. The plug plants were kindly provided by Sally Pattison, Biodiversity

Officer from South Glos. Now we are hoping for some rain to help them to grow and provide a beautiful display while attracting pollinators.

Brownies Sow Sunflowers

Crossbow Brownies have sown sunflower seeds in a competition to see who can grow the tallest sunflower. Later in June the seedlings will be planted at the back of the wild flower bed in The Park to create a stunning summer display. The Floral Hat Festival – an exhibition of flowers and hats (to be decorated or made with flowers – or why not try a vase of flowers with a small hat as decoration?) to commemorate our local hatting industry and celebrate summer flowers – will be open on the weekend of 24th – 25th June 2017 at the Zion United Church, Frampton Cotterell. Events include live music (from, among others, the Shanty Men and the Crossbow Singers), children’s craft activities, a talk on the hatting industry in S. Glos, refreshments and a plant stall.

Return to Cabinet system for council SOUTH Gloucestershire Council has reverted to a system of being run by a leader and Cabinet members - five years after the arrangement was abandoned. In the see-saw change of governance, the council has been run twice by committees and now, for the second time, by a Cabinet. The change came into effect at the council’s annual general meeting, meaning the leader and executive members will take decisions either collectively as a Cabinet or individually as executive portfolio holders. Decisions will be open to scrutiny by all of the nonexecutive councillors via a scrutiny commission. Formal appointments to the various roles were also made at the AGM, with Matthew Riddle

as council leader and Cabinet member for the local economy and devolution. Councillor Riddle represents the Severn ward, comprising the villages of Olveston, Oldburyon-Severn, Rockhampton, Hill and Aust. Toby Savage becomes deputy leader and Cabinet member for schools, skills and employment. Other portfolio holders are Ben Stokes, adult care; Jon Hunt, children and young people; Colin Hunt, planning, transportation and the strategic environment; Heather Goddard, communities and tourism; Erica Williams, housing delivery and public health, and John Goddard, corporate resources. Councillors Ian Boulton and Claire Young share the chairmanship of the scrutiny

commission. Other non-executive chairmen and women appointed to head up various roles include Marian Lewis, health scrutiny; Nick Barrett, audit and accounts; June Bamford, development control east; Trevor Jones, development control west, and Keith Cranney, regulatory committee. Separately, Yate councillor Ian Blair was appointed council chairman after a year in the role of vice-chairman. Emersons Green councillor Rachael Hunt was appointed vice chairwoman. n NEWS A PAINTING of Ann Widdecombe created to promote Thornbury Arts Festival and the Severn Vale Arts Trail received a seal of approval from the former Shadow Home Secretary herself. Miss Widdecombe dropped by to see the portrait in Olveston before going on to officially launch the festival. The painting was the work of village artist and art trail participant Angus Macaskill, who creates pictures when inspired by the latest news and then displays them on the gates of his Churchill House home for passers-by to see. His image of Miss Widdecombe was based on an appearance on the BBC’s Question Time programme and also featured its presenter David Dimbleby. When told about the painting, Miss Widdecombe was keen to see it so stopped off to meet Mr Macaskill ahead of her appointment in Thornbury. She said the picture was “very amusing” and happily posed alongside it. She also said

popular contestants on Strictly Come Dancing, then went on to the Armstrong Hall to give a talk about her life within and outside politics, before answering questions from the audience. Other highlights of the nine-day festival included comedy drama from the Reduced Shakespeare Company, concerts by folk singer Cara Dillon and the electric string band Stringfever, as well as a talk on genetics by leading scientist Professor Robert Winston. Lord Winston also visited the Castle School earlier on the day of his visit to talk to students. The festival committee said comments received from those attending events had indicated it was one of the best ever and a big success.

n LETTERS PPG – What’s that?

It’s PPG Awareness Week from 19th to 24th June, but I’m pretty certain that most people reading this won’t know what that means. Patient Participation Groups are set up to represent patients at GP surgeries and try to help to bring improvements. We represent the patients of the Frome Valley Medical Centre and I’ve been very concerned recently to read lots of negative comments on Facebook about the surgery, particularly with regard to the time it takes to get an appointment. Did you know that our surgery has almost 15,000 patients? There have also been significant changes recently with new doctors being recruited and trained. Oh, and you know the chest infections a lot of people suffered from over the winter, well the doctors and nurses weren’t immune and there was a lot of juggling to get patients seen. Staff were also hit hard and were having to cover for each other during this period. Our surgery is certainly better than many others nationally and if you really need

n NEWS to see someone urgently there is never a problem. We know that wait times are reducing now and that there is a lot of hard work going on at the surgery to make sure that patients get good service and treatment and that most patients appreciate this. However if you really feel that things aren’t right for you there is a complaints process in place at the surgery or, if you have a more general comment, please use your Patient Participation Group (PPG). Summer concert promises feel good tunes at Crossbow The Crossbow Singers are busily rehearsing for their 2017 SUmmer Concert. This will take place on

Monday and Tuesday, 3rd and 4th July in Crossbow House. School Road, Frampton Cotterell. Performances begin at 7.30pm. This year all the proceeds from the ticket sales will be split between three local charities. These are the Baby Bank Network (Bristol), Off The Record, (Yate), and The Hive Drop-in Service (Kingswood). In choosing these we ahve tried to cover a wide age range and variety of different needs within out community. There will also be a retiring collection to raise funds for the forthcoming improvements to the Beesmoor Road Playing Fields in Frampton Cotterell. Teenagers arrested after bin fire THREE teenagers were arrested after a fire in a bin in Mangotsfield that led to damage to six cars nearby. The incident was reported at about 6am on Friday May 5 in the Arnold Road/Junction Way area. The next day two 15-year-old boys and a 14-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of arson. Supermarket helps with Golf day to raise thousands for charity Yate youth garden A CHARITY golf day organised by the captain of Chipping Sodbury Golf Club is looking to raise £5000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and the Willow Foundation. The Willow Foundation has fulfilled thousands of special days for young adults with life threatening conditions. The charity was founded by former Arsenal goalkeeper Bob Wilson and his wife Megs in 1999 as a memorial to their daughter Anna who died of cancer at 31. Club captain Clive Reynolds said; ‘I am well on the way to achieving my £5000 target.

However a well supported event will ensure that I reach my goal and this will enable me to support two worthwhile causes.’ The day at Chipping Sodbury tees off at 11.30am on Friday 14 July as a Stableford Points competition. The entry fee of £140 for a team of four includes refreshments, a two course meal and the chance to win prizes for nearest the pin and halfway house competitions. THE Armadillo Youth Venue and Café is to start work on a garden in its grounds, after securing £5,000 from the local Tesco supermarket. The money was secured after coming out on top in a community vote at the store at Yate Shopping Centre. Plans for the garden involve artificial grass, football goals and colourful planting boxes with fruit trees and vegetables. Local suppliers have approached the venue and offered their services, with work on the garden to begin

Rockhampton ready to roll as folk festival unveils quality line-up SCARECROWS have been appearing in and around Thornbury to spread the word about Rockhampton Folk Festival. This year’s event takes place in its countryside venue on Saturday, June 17, with a line-up that includes BBC Young Folk Musician award winner Greg Russell. Greg will be appearing alongside Ray Hearne, who describes himself as a Yorkshire Irish kid. Vocal Global, gipsy swing from The Schmoozenbergs, Fife and Strum and The Hosen Ones have also been booked to appear. This year’s festival has been recognised by Arts Council England and with its support, the organisers have been able

to bring top quality artists to the village. They are also supporting young musicians, with the Wriggle Jigglers and Panache steel band set to entertain festival-goers. Tickets can be bought through the festival website, with Early Bird discounts only available until May 31. They are also on sale in Surroundings in Thornbury. Gates will open at 2.30pm, with locally produced food and drink available and parking provided next to the festival site. A COMEDIAN who came close to winning the ITV show I’m a celebrity Get Me Out Of Here last year is to be special guest at the South Gloucestershire Show. Joel Dommett will be at the Henfield showground over the the weekend of 5 and 6 August. The performer is currently on a UK tour, but is taking time out of his schedule to come to the show.

Paul Jones and Dave Kelly return to Sodbury

MANFRED Mann frontman Paul Jones is making a welcome return to Chipping Sodbury this July. He will be joined by co vocalist Dave Kelly and the duo, founder members of The Blues Band, will be performing their live acoustic set at the Baptist Church on the evening of Friday 7th July. Since announcing the concert organisers Cotswold Edge Events have been overwhelmed by the response and the July date is well on its way to selling out. Recycling centre back in use after refurbishment finished ahead of waste collection changes HOUSEHOLDERS in the Frome Valley area who use Mangotsfield recycling centre can take rubbish there once more after a refurbishment scheme was finished ahead of schedule. The centre was closed for three months so improvements could be made to the transfer station at the site and the yard behind it. South Gloucestershire Council said the work was essential to prepare the centre for new weekly recycling collections for households that will come into effect in June, as well as improving traffic flow. An extra weighbridge has also been added with covered bays for recyclable materials to be unloaded from new collection vehicles. The public Sort It! recycling centre was also cleaned and painted during the closure. While shut, householders had to take their unwanted items to other recycling sites in the district. Kerbside waste collections are being altered from June 19 to help South Gloucestershire cut waste and recycle 50 per cent of its rubbish by 2020. The changes involve replacing the current 240-litre black wheelie bins for non-recyclable waste with smaller 140-litre containers, which will be emptied every fortnight, along with the green bins for garden waste. But all other recycling containers will be emptied every week, instead of every fortnight. Food recycling bins will continue to be emptied every week.

Music from the 60s Yate Rocks Festival set enjoyed at event for to draw in the crowds the elderly

to Kingsgate Park ORGANISERS of the annual Yate Rocks Festival are expecting a big turn-out for the popular community event when it returns to Kingsgate Park. The festival is in its twelfth year and is set to draw in thousands of people of all ages. They will go along to hear local bands, visit sideshows, support community and craft stalls and enjoy a variety of food and drink, with a beer tent hosted by the Wickwar Brewing Company. A range of entertainment includes giant inflatables for children, who can also have a go on trampolines and join in football games. A new feature this year will be a go-kart ride for youngsters and a Wipe Out inflatable that also allows adults to join in. There will also be a chance to

see a fire engine from the town’s station. The festival opens on Saturday, June 24, with music to be performed by bands including Atlantic, Limited Edition, Toby, Tail Lights, Uncle Buck, Elevation and Fire Blisters, as well as the Yate Rock Choir. There will also be dancing by GKR, Kathryn Hurley Dance Academy, Redds, Street Cred and Pure. A Praise in the Park event will get the festival’s second day under way on Sunday, June 25, with local churches providing an outdoor service from 10.30am. The Westerly Showband will play during an afternoon Picnic in the Park from 1.30pm. There will also be entertainment from Raysfield School Choir and the Sounds Delighted women’s choir.

MORE than 100 older people enjoyed an evening of musical entertainment organised by Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club. The event, held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, featured The End of the Track band from Chippenham, which turned the clock back to the 60s with its schedule of songs. Rotary president Ian Lowe, who was master of ceremonies for the night, said: “The evening

proved to be a great success.” He thanked all the organisations that had contributed to the success of the event, including the band, Green Community Travel for transporting members of the audience to and from their care homes, the staff at Chipping Sodbury Town Hall and members of Chipping Sodbury Inner Wheel for providing refreshments.

Annual beer and music festival set for sell-out

REAL ale enthusiasts will be heading for Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club when the annual South Cotswold Beer and Music Festival returns to the venue. The event, now in its 22nd year, attracts hundreds of people to The Ridings to sample a 100-strong range of beers, as well as cider, perry and wine. They also enjoy hours of live music during the two-day event, with food, snacks and soft drinks available. Organised by Yate and District Rotary Club, this year’s festival will open at 6pm on Friday, July 7, and continue into the night, resuming from noon on Saturday, July 8. It is one of the biggest beer festivals in the area and profits from the weekend will go to a range of local, national and international charities supported by the Rotarians. Club spokesman David Picton said £236,000 had so far been

At both the Easter "Howard's Day" meeting, and the May Bank holiday round, he managed third in class. With 14 points he is currently laying tenth in the championship table. Hignell is one of only a

Sodbury Sportive back in the saddle A CHARITY cycle ride that has become popular nationally is getting ready for its sixth year this summer. The Saddleback Sodbury Sportive on Sunday 13 August has enjoyed positive reviews in a number of top cycling magazines. The number of riders has grown steadily each year from 378 in the first event in 2012 to 1,000 at last years fifth Sportive. Event organiser Stuart Bennett, “The sportive is for everyone as it offers three routes to choose from; 30, 60 or 100 miles. A friendly atmosphere combined with great camaraderie on all the routes

and back at the event HQ has made it into an event enjoyed by everyone.’ The event is run entirely by volunteers with 100% of the profits going to charities and good causes. Last year the event raised just under £25,000. Cyclists who complete the course can also look forward to the chance to relax with a pasty and a pint and listen to live music at Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club.

Nicholson achieves Badminton dream after overcoming serious neck injury

IT took 33 years but Andrew Nicholson finally won the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials - just 21 months after escaping paralysis in a fall that left him with a broken neck. The Wiltshire-based New Zealander achieved his long deserved victory with Nereo, the 17-year-old chestnut gelding who has previously carried him to a third and sixth place at the international, as well as team bronze at the London 2012 Olympics. In emotional scenes at the end of four days of competition, fellow riders gave three cheers to the 55-year-old Kiwi, whose CV had until then failed to include the prestigious Badminton title, despite a record number of completions and finishing as close as second. Before the 2017 running, Nicholson had completed the event an incredible 35 times. This year he made that 37, with a top 12 finish on Qwanza as well as nailing the title with Nereo. He said: “To have waited so long and to have been so near before has been pretty hard but I had to get over it and get on. I’ve been able to come back and to finally win has given me an unbelievable feeling. “I’ve had Nereo since he was four-years-old and he’s always been one of my favourites. He tries to please and gives 100 per cent all of the time.” Nicholson said having Nereo to compete played a big part in getting him back in the saddle after his serious injury in August

2015, which led to eight hours of surgery to repair fractures and stabilise his cervical spine. His surgeon, Jeremy Reynolds, a Bristol University graduate, told him his injury would have caused paralysis in 98 per cent of cases. Nicholson’s victory came after an equal fifth place dressage test and jumping clear with just 2.4 time penalties around the tough four-mile cross-country course designed for the first time by Eric Winter. That pushed him up to third position ahead of the final showjumping, where he put the pressure on by going clear with one time fault. He then rose to the top when 2016 winners Michael Jung and La Biosthetique Sam knocked down one fence to maintain second place, while overnight leader Ingrid Klimke had a disastrous round with Horseware Hale Bob to drop to ninth position. Tim Price finished third with Xavier Faer, while Mark Todd was fourth with NZB Campino and sixth with Leonidas II. Rosalind Canter was best of the British in fifth with Allstar B. n SPORT PUCKLECHURCH ladies hockey team have had a few weeks off before the start of a new summer league season. They are hoping for better times ahead after last seasons’ relegation from division one. A longer summer season, running from the second week in May through to the first week in September will give plenty of opportunity to keep fitness up look to retain the title of champions. First game back saw Pucklechurch face Badminton Ladies, welcoming new players, both those returning from time out from the game and others who had never played before. Pucklechurch ran out 1-0 winners. The second game back saw Pucklechurch take on hosts Keynsham 1. Fielding some new players, they had much of the play. A strong performance by Jenny Martyn in a different position at left back and new player Jill Robinson making lot of play through the middle ensured a 4-0 victory. The club have a seven-a- side tournament this month; hosting at YOSC on 17th June. Seven teams will be fighting it out in fancy dress and money raised going to the charity Bloodwise.

Cup triumph ends season for youngsters WINTERBOURNE United Under 12’s ended the seasons in style after winning the Avon Youth League Plate competition. The team finished a third in their division but it was the cup competition which gave them most to cheer about. After winning four qualification matches, the final was against opposition that had won the division without losing a single match. So the final was going to be a huge challenge. But the young players played with tremendous determination and skill. The final was a close and engrossing encounter between two strong teams, but a goal in each half meant Winterbourne won the match 2-0..

Colts race away with 7’s title

Early season sees centuries galore for Winterbourne WINTERBOURNE, cricket club has enjoyed a good start to the season with players shining with both bat and ball. There have been nine centuries notched up. Third team opener Chris Kay has led the way, scoring back to back hundreds on successive weekends, which has helped guide his side to second spot in the table. The highest score so far this season has been an unbeaten 150 from veteran Jon Oakes, who has been playing alongside son Ashley in the club's fourth XI. Another veteran, Derek Comley, also made a fine unbeaten century against Hanham. First teamers Richard Trotman and Ben Slade also have a hundred against their name, as does young Tom Curnock - who also scored his runs against Hanham. Another youngster to impress is Sami Hamid, who retired unbeaten with a ton against Keynsham in an Under 13 fixture. The final hundred went to Adam Moore, who has been the club's stand out opening bowler for many years. Injury has restricted his bowling but benefited his batting greatly; his unbeaten 102 against Bedminster was warmly received by the fast bowler's union. The club's bowlers have also played their part. Three players have taken 5 wicket hauls, Kieran Slade returning 5-32 against Patchway. Matt Crane was also in the wickets, this time in the National T20 competition. He produced a spell of 5-21 against Burbage. The club's leading wicket taker is currently skipper George Ford. His 5-27 against Bath secured victory and ensured his side were at the top of the table at the end of May.

Dan Harris scorer of winning try in final FRAMPTON Cotterell Rugby Clubs’ colts team are celebrating after being crowned Bristol Colts 7’s champions. After breezing through the early rounds of the competition, they came up against the host club Keynsham in the final. Keynsham led 12-5 with only a minute left but Frampton scored two late tries to take the title, 17-12 . The last play of the game, with Frampton trailing 12-10, saw skipper Zak Smith get a crucial turnover and Dan Harris raced under the points for the victory. The boys triumphed despite attending the club’s annual dinner the night before.

Fair to middling start for the Fram IT has been a mixed start to the season for Frampton Cotterell Cricket Club, writes Sam Coleman. The first team lost badly to Keynsham (by 6 wickets) and to Lansdown (by 60 runs) but managed to beat YMCA for the first time in many years. The star performer has undoubtedly been former skipper, Gary Winsor who, now unburdened by the weight of leadership, took 5 wickets for 12 runs and then proceeded to hit an unbeaten 27 runs, winning the match with a superb straight six. On a wet track, new captain Phil Cordy won the toss much to the delight of the Frampton bowlers and YMCA were rushed out for 55 in 21.2 overs. The second team have fared less well losing all three of their league games played in the Bristol and District league. Despite Paul Crowley rolling back the years and clubbing 69 including a massive 6 on to the roof of the clubhouse, Frampton 2’s lost to Bristol Uni Staff 2nd team by 69 runs with old fo, Mo Rashid hitting 79. As usual, the Frampton fielders were particularly generous to the opposition batsmen by gifting them some extra lives. Frampton 2s lost the next fixture against Stothert and Pitt CC by 44 runs and then endured a tough day in the field against Downend coming up 105 runs short when chasing a rain-reduced target of 206 from 33 overs. Finally, the Frampton 3’s have shone a light amidst the gloom with the ever present chairman, Vic Cater still featuring regularly in the runs and wickets. In a thrilling game against Twyford House, Vic and Steve Woods knocked off the winning runs chasing 134 to win by 3 wickets (Vic 32* and 3-19). Frampton 3’s then went on to beat Portishead, also by 3 wickets chasing 119, Robin Cater hitting a half century on his return from injury and Jake Lewis taking 4 wickets for 19 runs with a fine mixture of deliveries.
