Community chapel plan scrapped HOPES of converting the Ebenezer Chapel in Winterbourne into a venue for community activities have been dashed as a result of the project’s expected high costs. Volunteers who had worked on the scheme since last year said it was with great sadness that a decision was taken to scrap the proposal. However, they are now working towards introducing activities that had been considered for the Watleys End chapel into other community buildings in the locality. They said they did not want to lose the enthusiasm and support that had been given to the project from villagers. A grant of £3,000 had paid for a feasibility study into the proposal but that revealed the cost of buying and renovating the chapel would be much higher than at first anticipated. That would have involved a greater fund raising effort by the project team and local people than could have been justified. Full story page 4.

Minor injuries pilot scheme planned for GP practices A PILOT scheme aimed at improving minor injuries services in South Gloucestershire is set to be launched. Health bosses propose to make a decision on the two-year pilot when they meet at the end of September. If it goes ahead, an increasing range of health care will become available at GP surgeries, making it easier for people to get help closer to home. But with concerns raised recently about the future of Yate Minor Injuries Unit (MIU), the South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) stressed the pilot scheme would complement existing services at the MIU, as well as those at Southmead Hospital. The CCG plan will involve practice-based nurses, supported by GPs, running minor injuries services. Extra staff and resources have been pledged to provide the necessary extra capacity to deal with injuries such as minor burns, scalds, fractures, eye and head injuries. Sprains, strains,
cuts, grazes and bites will also be treated. However, more serious injuries, including anything requiring immediate plastering or crutches, as well as major problems such as severe breathlessness, severe abdominal pain, severe chest pain or strokes, will still be dealt with by A&E services. The proposal is all part of efforts to reduce unnecessary visits to hospitals. GP practices have supported the pilot in principle and the CCG has asked the public for comments before it decides whether to go ahead with the scheme. A questionnaire can be completed by visiting www. southgloucestershireccg.nhs. uk/minorinjuries before 7pm on September 11. Dr Ann Sephton, deputy clinical chairwoman at the CCG, said: “We believe our proposal is the best and most cost-effective option for improving local access to minor injury services.” Although the scheme will offer weekday-only appointments
from 8.30am-6.30pm, options for an out-of-hours service are being considered. The CCG also hopes to have a new X-ray service that would give quicker results. During the pilot, feedback from patients and local people will assess how it’s working, its cost and clinical effectiveness.
3
Yate MIU opened in 2010 but its provision has not led to a cut in demand on local A&E services and its X-ray facility is only open on weekdays. Some people also turn up with conditions that can be treated by a GP or should involve a hospital visit.
Listed building works lead to fine for Hambrook man A MAN from Hambrook was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay more than £1,300 in costs after admitting carrying out unauthorised works to his grade two-listed home. Mazhar Iqbal, of Bristol Road, had work done to the property that included adding an extension to the back of the building. South Gloucestershire Council said its officers assessed that the works were detrimental to the architectural and historic interest of the building and were sufficiently serious to warrant prosecution proceedings. Mr Iqbal was also ordered by North Avon magistrates to pay a victim surcharge of £120.

High costs force abandonment of Watleys End chapel community plan AN ambitious plan to save an old chapel for community use has been abandoned due to the anticipated cost of the scheme. A group of residents had been working on the project for many months in the hope of turning the Ebenezer Chapel in Watleys End, Winterbourne, into an arts and crafts centre with a community space and café. But a feasibility study into the potential purchase, restoration and renovation of the building highlighted significant costs which would require a level of fund raising regarded as too great. Had the scheme gone ahead, the building would have been known as the Hat Factory as among early members of the chapel’s congregation were those involved in the local hat making industry that flourished in the 1800s. Mandy Nicholls, who started
the campaign last year to give the chapel a new lease of life, was joined by other local parents keen to pursue the project. South Gloucestershire Council gave £3,000 towards the feasibility study and volunteers helped clear out the building. Many local residents also gave their views about the scheme through a questionnaire. The team said in a statement: “We have received a report from a structural surveyor and building contractors regarding the condition of the chapel and the scale and scope of works that would be needed to be undertaken in order to restore the building and convert it into a community facility. “Unfortunately, the costs of the restoration would be significantly higher than we anticipated. “This means that the level of fundraising required for

the project would be a huge commitment and we would have to ask the community to invest in the chapel project over and above other existing facilities. “After a lot of thought and with great sadness, we have taken the decision not to proceed with the project as we consider it unfeasible to try to save the chapel building, which is part of the historic fabric of Watleys
End.” Mandy said feedback and suggestions from local residents meant some of the planned activities could be run at other venues locally and they would be pursued by speaking with other organisations and community groups. The team has thanked everyone who got involved in the campaign for all their effort.

Celebrations as post office returns to Coalpit Heath RESIDENTS in Coalpit Heath are about to get their post office back after months of being without the service. The former post office and general store in Church Lane closed earlier this year when postmaster Steve Davis resigned. Edwina Pennell, who runs the Nisa shop in Woodend Road, stepped forward with an offer to take on the post office business and keep the much valued service running for local people. Bosses at Post Office Ltd gave approval to the switch after carrying out a consultation exercise, which resulted in much support being given to the move. Now a date has been set for the re-opening, with the first customers set to be welcomed at 1pm on Monday, September 14. Work to the interior of the shop had to be carried out to meet post office requirements but by being part of the convenience store, the hours of
the post office will be longer than at the previous location. In total, customers will be offered an extra 56.5 hours of opening time a week. It means the service will be open from 7am-11pm on weekdays, from 8am-11pm on Saturdays and 8am-10pm on Sundays. Julia Marwood, regional network manager at Post Office Ltd, said: “We understand how important having a post office is to residents in Coalpit Heath. We are confident this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.” After the Church Lane post office closed at the end of March, customers had to travel outside the village to the closest alternatives, many having to go to Yate or Winterbourne. Older people and customers without their own transport found the temporary loss of the
facility especially difficult. At the Nisa store, customers will be able to use a separate screened counter to carry out post office business or an openplan counter at the shop till for selected services. Meanwhile, plans drawn up for the old post office site have been approved by South Gloucestershire Council.
The premises, which include a terraced home, were sold to Avalon Equity, which has been told it can divide up the property to separate the living accommodation from the shop space. The scheme increases the size of the three-bedroom cottage and leaves a smaller area for a potential business to use.

Church tower damage sees weather vane removed as appeal made to pay for repairs A SECTION of St Peter’s Church in Frampton Cotterell has been roped off after a problem was discovered with part of its tower. The mounting beneath the golden cockerel weather vane at the top of the tower has become rusty and, according to the church, there is a small risk of masonry falling off. Space around the tower and the back of the church has now been taped off and the weather vane removed due to the damage. The cost of fixing the problem has been estimated at about £10,000, which is going to badly hit church funds. It will also put a temporary halt to bells being rung at weddings. Church warden Carolie Green
7
said there were already plans to improve facilities for children who use the church so repairing the tower was an added, unexpected expense. An appeal has been made to anyone able to make a donation towards the work to do so and get the weather vane back into position as soon as possible. One event which had to be postponed as a result of the problem was a Flying Teddies fund raiser. Parachuting teddies should have been launched from the tower during the bank holiday weekend but it is hoped to reschedule it once the repairs have been completed.

Coalpit Heath attraction set to close after five years THE popular Viaduct Nurseries and Coffee Shop site in Coalpit Heath is about to close. Kathy Roddick, who had run the attraction for five years, said the decision to close was taken due to personal circumstances and thanked everyone who had supported her over that time. It meant new owners had to be found for the animals that had been favourites of so many visitors. A double decker playbus which provided a special play area for children up to the age of 12 has also been put up for sale, along with most of the kitchen equipment and furniture. The nurseries continued to operate during the summer but are expected to close for good
sometime in mid-September. Kathy said: “Sadly, and with great regret, I have to close due to circumstances beyond my control. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed running the site for the past five years and many people have said how sorry they are that it’s closing. The support from local people has been lovely.” Among the animals at the site were donkeys, pygmy goats, kune kune pigs and alpacas, which were especially popular with children. Last year Kathy also added to the appeal of the venue by bringing in the big red playbus, which had been converted from a commercial vehicle.

Stone the crows! Scary figures set to emerge in Frampton and Coalpit Heath SCARECROWS will be popping up around Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath when a new competition is run for local families. The first scarecrow trail to be organised in the area has been planned for the October halfterm holiday, with the event to be repeated in future years if it proves to be a success. People of all ages can enter the challenge, working either alone or with others on their creations. But they will all be asked to put their scarecrows on display at their homes so villagers can see them before casting votes for their favourites. An event will then be held at the Brockeridge Centre in Woodend Road when the votes will be counted and the winner announced. The trail has been organised by a team from the local
Churches Together group, which wants the scarecrows to be designed on the theme of the family. Spokeswoman Sue Walters said entries for the contest could be dropped off at St Peter’s Church and Zion Church in Frampton Cotterell, at St Saviour’s Church in Coalpit Heath and at the Brockeridge Centre. They have to be submitted by Friday, October 9, giving contestants time to work on their scarecrows before the trail opens on October 22. A map showing the locations of the scarecrows will be produced and a box put into the Brockeridge Centre to collect votes. Judging day will be on Saturday, October 31, during a hot dog and coffee event. Sue said: “We thought it would be a nice way to try and include as many people in the
locality as possible. “The more entries we receive, the better. There will be a prize
for the winner and hopefully it will be so successful that it will become an annual event.”

English language business reaches landmark first anniversary
A BUSINESS teaching English to speakers of other languages is celebrating its first birthday with the launch of three new courses in Yate’s library. Zoe Drew, of Frampton Cotterell, started English Language for Everyone with the help of the Prince’s Trust. She now offers more than 40 courses, including sessions for babies and toddlers, as well as people who need to be familiar with English used in business and parents looking to help their children with schoolwork. The latest courses will run for eight weeks, with start dates on September 7 and 8. Zoe will also be running three drop-in sessions in September and October as part of South Gloucestershire’s annual Discover Festival. She said: “Many of the students who studied with the company in its first year have already gone on to enjoy wide-ranging success, from finding their first job in the UK to getting into the film-making industry. Two of the company’s students have set up their own businesses.”

Lift-off for police helicopter anniversary celebration THE 20th anniversary of the police helicopter was marked with a demonstration at Filton airfield. Now operated by the National Police Air Service (NPAS), the aircraft was introduced when Western Counties Air Operations Unit was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Avon and Somerset and Gloucestershire constabularies. The NPAS was formed in 2012 to bring together the country’s police helicopters, with local officers seconded to continue operating the aircraft in the Avon, Somerset and Gloucestershire area. Planning permission was recently granted for a new, purposebuilt facility at the Almondsbury interchange which it is hoped will become home to NPAS, along with the Great Western Air Ambulance. Caroline Peters, Avon and Somerset Constabulary’s force lead for air operations, said: “Over the past 20 years, the helicopter has responded to many large incidents, offering aerial support to officers on the ground.” Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, said the helicopter was a “valuable resource for fighting, investigating and deterring crime across our communities” and it was “imperative” that it stayed within the force area.

fromevalleyvoice www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk September, 2015 New career for former MP and Winterbourne men pensions minister Steve Webb jailed after stealing FORMER Thornbury and Yate MP pensioner’s savings Steve Webb, who lost his seat at the T: 01454 800 120
www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk
General Election earlier this year, has a new job. The longest serving pensions minister has been appointed director of policy and external communications at Royal London - a mutual life, pensions and investment company. He is due to take up the newly created role in early November after the job was approved by the advisory committee on business appointments. But parliamentary rules prevent him from any direct lobbying activity for the first two years of his appointment. Mr Webb first became a Liberal Democrat MP in 1997, having previously been a professor of social policy at Bath University, and became a minister in the coalition government. Having been involved in designing policy in pensions areas such as automatic enrolment, he said: “I am looking forward to seeing how it is implemented on the front line.” Phil Loney, Royal London’s chief executive, said: “I am delighted to welcome Steve to Royal London. His strong background in public policy and experience in government will be invaluable.” The appointment comes despite a policy regarding lower charges on workplace pensions attracting criticism from Royal London, which described it as “headline grabbing”.
THREE men from Winterbourne have been jailed after stealing the £3,000 savings of an 84-year-old man in Cardiff. Peter Joseph Gilheaney was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, Patrick O’Lorcain was imprisoned for four years and Patrick Gilheaney received a two-and-a-half year sentence when they appeared at Newport Crown Court. The court heard how earlier this year the trio travelled to Cardiff, where they followed the pensioner home. O’Lorcain engaged the man in conversation and while distracted, the victim’s home was entered and his savings taken. When the man later discovered the money was missing, he went to his bank to withdraw the same amount that had gone but concerned staff reported the matter to the police. All three defendants admitted the distraction burglary. Detective Inspector Ian Bourne, of Cardiff Bay CID, said the pensioner had been profoundly affected by the incident. Detective Superintendent Mike Courtiour, of Avon and Somerset police, said: “This was a callous crime committed by offenders in our area who, thanks to our joint work with South Wales police, are now behind bars.”

Foster parent Margaret speaks of her ten years of caring
GREAT grandmother Margaret Williams has fostered more than a dozen children in nearly a decade - now she hopes others will be inspired to follow her example. Margaret has spoken of the rewards of fostering as South Gloucestershire Council looks to recruit more foster parents. The council said people from all walks of life were needed to help make a difference to those children and young people looking to be fostered. Families, couples, same-sex couples and single people can apply to be foster parents, as long as they own or rent their own home. For Margaret,60, who lives in Yate and is currently caring for an 11-year-old boy, becoming a foster parent was “the best decision” she ever made. She said: “I love the idea that I’m doing something to help children. I find it very rewarding because you get to see the children achieving so many things. “There are ups and downs

but when you see that huge smile on a child’s face, it makes it all worthwhile. Nothing beats fostering. It’s not always easy but it’s the best job in the world.” Councillor Jon Hunt, chairman of the council’s children and young people committee, said: “Fostering can be extremely difficult at times but foster carers receive ongoing training, support and weekly payments to provide the care, support and attention that a child needs.” He said there was currently a particular need to foster older children and siblings.
Grant decisions on agenda at area forum THE allocation of grants will be on the agenda of the next Frome Vale Area Forum meeting. A progress report will also be given on the local transport capital programme and money distributed through the New Homes Bonus. Residents can attend the forum to question councillors and council officers on local matters and have a say on decisions affecting the area. The meeting starts at 7pm on Thursday, September 17, in Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church, High Street.

Medieval barn opens its doors for heritage days
VISITORS will have the chance to look around Winterbourne’s medieval barn on two consecutive days during the annual Heritage Open Days weekend. The barn, with its raised cruck roof, was built in 1342 by Thomas de Bradeston and the structure is still 90 per cent original. It was rescued from dereliction by South Gloucestershire Council, English Heritage and the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme and the open days will enable people to see how it has been restored and protected. The weekend runs on September 12 and 13, with the barn open from 2pm-5pm together with neighbouring St Michael’s church. On the Sunday the barn will also host a one-day course giving an introduction to traditional dry

stone walling. Anyone interested in enrolling for the course, which costs £30 and supports the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust, should phone 0117 957 4921 to book a place. Next month the annual South Gloucestershire Discover Festival will be at the barn for an orchard harvest day. Cider will be made with a Victorian horse-powered stone mill and wooden cider press, varieties of apples can be identified and there will be rural crafts, falconry, archery, live music and a farmers’ market. The event runs on Sunday, October 4, from 11am-4pm and entrance will be £2 but free for children. Parking at £2 will raise money for the Paul's Place charity.

Yate Riverside attracts more interest from top chains as Nando’s negotiates for space
RESTAURANT chain Nando’s is involved in talks to occupy a unit at the new Yate Riverside complex. The company has submitted planning applications for a customised restaurant frontage but a lease is yet to be finalised. Yate Riverside is an extension to the town’s shopping centre, with a cinema, shops and restaurants to open at the site off Link Road. Andy Lowrey, Yate Shopping Centre manager, said: “We are currently in legal negotiations with Nando’s, which is in the process of taking one of the units. “Obviously, as soon as we are able to confirm whether it has signed up, we will do so. “Nando’s was by far the
most requested restaurant when we undertook the public consultation for the scheme so we are delighted it wants to join the other great names in the town centre.” Other national restaurant operators and retailers have expressed an interest or have committed to opening in Yate. Prezzo and Dean’s Diner restaurants will join Cineworld, Next and Pets at Home, with further well known chains waiting in the wings. The scheme is now more than 70 per cent let, with the shops and restaurants scheduled to open in December and the cinema due to screen its first films at Easter 2016.

Bike challenge raises thousands of pounds for hospice in memory of Jelf colleague
A TWO-day cycling challenge helped a team from insurance company Jelf raise more than £20,000 in memory of a friend and colleague. The 150-mile ride was organised by the Chipping Sodbury-based firm and took the cyclists from Cardiff to Hampshire. Together with a fun day at its head office, it was the latest fund raising event run by Jelf in aid of St Peter’s Hospice. It brought to £30,000 the total so far collected by the group to remember Emma Wygladala, who died of a rare sarcoma of the womb at the age of 38. Emma, of Fishponds, had worked for Jelf as a business support manager and was cared for by hospice staff in her final weeks. Edd Smith, corporate fundraiser at St Peter’s Hospice, said: “It is great that Jelf have been supporting the hospice again this year in memory of Emma.
The Jelf team present a cheque to Julie Pudbury from St. Peter’s Hospice “It was lovely that they were able to present the cheque to Julie Pudbury, one of our nurses
who actually cared for Emma. “Support of this nature allows us to continue caring for those
with life-limiting illnesses and their families in Bristol.”

Chair’s chosen charities TWO charities will benefit from Cllr Erica Williams’ year in office as Chair of South Gloucestershire Council. The recently appointed Chair will raise funds for Avon Valley Railway in Bitton and Wild Place Project, a Bristol Zoo-run attraction based near junction 17 of the M5. Cllr Williams said: “I will be supporting two South Gloucestershire-based charities during my term in office; the Avon Valley Railway and the Wild Place Project. “I chose the Avon Valley Railway, not only because it is in my ward but because I worked with the previous Chairman Bob Hitchings MBE who sadly passed away earlier this year. He was focussed on not only restoring the station and engines but providing an exciting environment for all ages. All the staff are dedicated to ensuring that we embrace our heritage and they deserve the support. “The Wild Place Project, my second charity was chosen, after I had the honour to open the new cheetah exhibit on May 14 this year. Set in beautiful grounds, providing a unique experience for everyone. They rely on visitors and local sponsors to continue their work by raising awareness of those animals that are endangered. Everyone who works there are very driven and their work is inspirational and so very important.” The Chair and Vice-Chair of the council are elected each year at the council’s annual meeting and represent the council at civic functions, as well as chairing full meetings of council.

Diabetics to get new service for their condition from South Gloucestershire team A NEW community diabetes service will be introduced in South Gloucestershire in the autumn. Under the system, support will be offered to diabetics for their condition in their own home or at a clinic. People will initially be referred by their own GP but it is hoped they will eventually be able to refer themselves. The diabetes community service will be run by Sirona, which already provides a number of publicly funded health and social care services in the district, and it has launched a questionnaire to find out what diabetics want from the service. Sirona said the aim of the service was to improve the quality of life for individuals and enable them to live better for longer in their own homes, avoid unnecessary hospital admissions and give them as much control and choice over managing their condition as possible. Rosemary Carroll, Sirona’s head of specialist nursing services, said: “Individuals will have access to specialist assessment and an individually developed programme of care. “There can be complications from diabetes, such as amputation, blindness, kidney failure and stroke. This new service aims to ensure individuals have support as early as possible as this has the potential for significant health benefits.” The online questionnaire can be found at www.sirona-cic. org.uk/your-view but anyone without internet access should call Martha Cox on 01225 831328.

News from the
Frome Valley Medical Centre THE summer holidays are over and preparations are once again underway for Frome Valley Medical Centre’s ‘Winter Campaign’ to provide flu and other vaccinations. We have set aside three Saturday mornings; 3rd and 10th October and 7th November, from 8.00am until 1.00pm for flu vaccinations. Appointments can be booked from 7th September onwards. The Saturday morning sessions have proved extremely popular with our patients in previous years and we expect take-up to be high. You are entitled to a free flu vaccination if you are 65 years or above, or if you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, heart or kidney disease or asthma. We will also be providing nasal flu vaccinations to all children aged 2, 3 or 4 again this year (although these vaccinations will not be given during our main Saturday clinics, they will be run during the weekday clinics). We offer private flu injections separately in normal clinic time
for those not eligible for the free NHS vaccinations at a cost of £15. Shingles vaccinations will also take place for patients who are 70, 78 and 79 this year, in normal surgery time. If you are eligible, you will receive an invitation for this vaccination and you will be able to have flu vaccinations at the same time if you would like. The Friends of Frome Valley Medical Centre will be running a book stall during the Saturday flu clinics. They are an enthusiastic group of individuals who assist us in providing excellent care by raising money to buy additional equipment. The Friends are always happy to receive new members, so do make yourself known to them during the Flu Vaccination clinics if you would like to join them. Exam successes for A-level and GCSE students STUDENTS discovered they had contributed to a record breaking year at Winterbourne International Academy when A-level results were published. They revealed that 59 per cent of the exam results were at the top A*-B grades, the highest results ever achieved by students in the sixth form. It was an eight per cent improvement on the previous year, with the number of A* grades nearly doubling. The average points score, which measures a student’s overall achievement, was also significantly higher. The academy said compared to the national average, the results were “exceptional” and put its students among some of the highest achieving in the country. Many pupils achieved results beyond their expectations and a number secured places at the top universities of their choice. Among the star performers was William Hardie-Brown, who got A* grades in chemistry, maths, further maths and physics to get a place at Cambridge
University to read natural sciences. Holly Sawyer, who was editor of the sixth form magazine and a contributor to Frome Valley Voice, will study journalism at Bournemouth University thanks to three A-grades, while English under-19 badminton star Jess Hopton will continue her sport while studying financial maths at Loughborough University. She said the support from teachers at Winterbourne ensured she kept up with her studies while travelling to overseas tournaments. Academy principal Richard Haupt said: “We are immensely proud of our students. These brilliant results are testament to their hard work.” In the GCSE results, 61 per cent of students achieved five or more top grades, including in the core subjects of English and maths. More than 22 per cent of students also gained the highest A* grade in at least one subject compared to the national average of six per cent. At Brimsham Green School, Yate, a double success was

announced, with students recording a 100 per cent pass rate at A-level, with A*, A and B grades making up 41 per cent of all passes. The school was also the most improved in South Gloucestershire with its GCSE results, with 61 per cent of pupils attaining at least five good passes at GCSE or equivalent level, including English and maths – an increase of nearly ten per cent from last year.

Head teacher Kim Garland said the A-level results were an indication of the school’s sustained improvement and as well as students now taking up university places, others had secured sought-after apprenticeships. Of the GCSE results, she said: “These are the best results in the school’s history and reflect our students’ potential, as well as their hard work.”

What’s new for autumn? How about a new hair cut or colour? – nothing gives us a fresher start than a new colour or hair style. Have a look at the hair magazines, pick several looks that you like and then get an honest opinion from your stylist as to what suit you. Think autumn colours for hair, everything becomes a little less bright, but richer. Look after your skin – a good facial at the start of the autumn, giving back to your skin after the summer months. moisturiser, an eye cream and a night cream. Any lip but RED. I love a red lip, but this season it’s all about nudes, rosy pinks, purples and plums with no real red in sight. If like me you like red, go for a classy plum lip, which apparently make teeth look whiter. Don’t forget the classics. Big lashes. With mascara, one coat is not enough, first curl your lashes then brush the wand on the outer lashes inwards. Then fan them out again; do this several times as it makes a real difference. Eye liner – The fastest way to smoulder, which is easy
and modern, is to add black eye line along the lower rim of the waterline. A great way to discreetly make lashes look thicker is to do the same to the upper waterline too. If you have small or round eyes don’t apply all the way along. Foundation – always find the right colour and seek advice from the makeup counter, and always ask for samples.

23 Urgent plea for volunteer drivers to help Yate’s lonely elderly fromevalleyvoice
September, 2015 E: richard@fromevalleyvoice.co.uk
A CHARITY that tackles loneliness and isolation among older people is urgently in need of volunteers in Yate to prevent a support group folding. Contact the Elderly has appealed for more drivers to give up a few hours a month to take one or two older people to local tea parties. The free get-togethers are held on Sunday afternoons for small groups of over-75s who live alone, providing them with regular and vital companionship. Each guest is collected from home by a volunteer driver and taken to the house of the party host. But the group running in Yate is at risk of closure due to a lack of drivers. Volunteer support officer Amanda Hall said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people but this lifeline is currently under threat in Yate, due to a real shortage of volunteer drivers in the area. “Anyone who can spare a

Sodbury Players gathering steam THE Sodbury Players are building up steam for their latest production – a stage version of the Ealing comedy classic The Titfield Thunderbolt. Members of the cast even paid a visit to the Warmley signal box to promote the production, which opens on September 16 and runs for four nights in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. In Philip Goulding’s adaptation, the character of Lady Edna Chesterford has been introduced to help the vicar, the Rev Weech, lead a campaign to buy their village railway branch line and save it from the axe. But they have to convince the authorities that a group of amateurs can run a train and compete with a rival bus service. Director Rob Creer said: “The Titfield Thunderbolt evokes the fun and free feeling of the 1950s film, while being a fantastic challenge for the cast and crew.” Performances start at 7.30pm and tickets can be booked online at https://www. ticketsource.co.uk/sodburyplayers. Shopping centre anniversary inspires new mural for Yate
A MURAL recording the history of Yate was unveiled during celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the town’s shopping centre. Sue Bruten designed the mural based on ideas from local schoolchildren at The Ridge Junior School and St Mary’s Primary School and other members of the community. The youngest contributor was just five-years-old and the oldest was 95. The mural depicts Yate’s history from the Domesday Book to today. Meanwhile, a copy of an earlier mural marking the shopping centre’s opening in 1965 is still displayed in East Walk. The new mural represents the development of both the town and the community, with the pupils asked to design tiles giving their impression of the current shops and what they liked about Yate.
Record year for Sodbury Sportive A RECORD 960 cyclists took part in the annual Saddleback Sodbury Sportive - ten per cent up on last year’s event. Participants had the choice of three routes to follow, either covering 30, 60 or 100 miles. With £18,800 raised in 2014, organisers at Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club are confident of surpassing that sum this year, with the money going to various charities. New features for 2015 included cyclists being timed using GPS over certain segments of the course, a steel band playing at the finish and riders offered massage and yoga on completion. Around the W.I. Frampton Cotterell WI Report AS mentioned in last month’s edition, Frampton Cotterell WI has had something of a summer break in August, and as a result there is little to report until WI social activity kicks off again in September. So this month, just a reminder from our group that there is plenty to look forward to as we approach early Autumn, including the Avon Federation WI Arts and Crafts Exhibition at the M Shed on 19th and 20th September, and on the 22nd September, the St Peters Hall meeting will welcome Sue Mountstevens, our local Police and Crime Commissioner who is going to tell us all about her very interesting role, as well as her achievements and aspirations. The October meeting will feature a talk on the early
history of Penguin Books by Barry Edwards - one not to miss for our book club members! And we have a skittles evening, carols in December and various group and social meetings following on from that. A new programme of talks and events will also be announced shortly for the new year. Visitors are always welcome to our monthly meetings at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Visitors are charged at £2.50 for the evening and any new members can join by paying a membership fee. We also have a number of special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our darts team. Please do look out for details for these and other meetings, social events etc. on our Facebook page – just search FramptonCottWI and like our page!

They were welcomed into the Ndinda community and stayed at a Neighbourhood Care Point which helps support orphans whose parents have died as a result of HIV infection. The challengers helped build a kitchen at the site. The 16-strong group also went trekking in the scenic Ngwempisi Gorge and visited two nature reserves, Malolotja and Mlilwane, where they enjoyed a sunset safari and ate at a game restaurant with traditional Swazi dancers. One of the BTEA group, Sam Bailey, aged 16, said: “The expedition has given me a new start, a fresh beginning. I’ve seen how a community can be so happy with so little and we were made to feel so welcome. Now I just want to get all the happiness and enjoyment out of everything I do.” Bristol Technology and Engineering Academy in Stoke Gifford is one of 30 University Technical Colleges across England, catering for pupils in Years 10 to 13 and with a strong focus on engineering and environmental technologies.

Chiropractic Care for Seniors
by Craig de Groot from the Willow Brook Clinic
W
ITH aging comes a number of new aches and pains. Unfortunately, although older adults are more likely to experience back and joint pain, they are less likely to seek care for their pain than younger adults. It’s important to know that you don’t have to resign yourself to a life filled with discomfort. Chiropractic care offers safe, effective, drug-free treatment for a variety of conditions associated with aging. Research shows that chiropractic treatment can help back, neck, and joint pain, dizziness, or pain from osteoarthritis, scoliosis, and spinal degeneration. Studies have found that older patients receiving chiropractic care experience significantly less disability and pain compared to patients not receiving chiropractic care. Chiropractic treatment works best when combined with exercise and nutrition. Older adults involved in physical activity have substantially less pain-related disability than non-active adults. Improving balance, gait, strength and exercise, as well as adequate nutrition and supplementation, can also play an important role in well-being and stability.
A chiropractor with good links to other health care professionals will be able to offer you a meaningful, all-round approach to looking after your health and wellbeing. For example, this could be: a programme for recovery after surgery, such as hip or knee replacement, with a specialist rehabilitation physiotherapist; a discussion with an occupational therapist about beneficial changes to your daily life; an appointment with a podiatrist to resolve an issue with your feet; an individualised exercise and fitness program designed by a personal trainer. A chiropractor is not just about your spine, but, in addition, is an avenue to making your life easier to live. Chiropractic care is more than just treating pain. It’s also about helping you lead a fulfilling, healthy life – regardless of age.

MP goes on tour of constituency RECENTLY elected Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall went on a tour of 35 towns and villages around the constituency to meet as many people as possible. He also held pop-up surgeries at venues such as Tesco in Yate, at Chipping Sodbury Festival and the South Gloucestershire Show. Among the villages visited were Little Sodbury, Old Sodbury, Iron Acton and Latteridge. Mr Hall said he was concerned that some constituents did not feel sufficiently engaged with politics and did not want to attend official appointments in his office.

Dementia and isolation in South Gloucestershire
Luke Hall MP writes for Yate & Sodbury Voice
AS a local man who has worked alongside the Alzheimer’s Society in South Gloucestershire, I am very aware that Dementia, and the social isolation it can cause is one of the biggest challenges facing parts of our community. Dementia sufferers are having to cope with the effects of physical damage to the brain as well as the emotional isolation and this can be extremely difficult for family, friends and neighbors, who need as much help and understanding as we can give. People can be particularly vulnerable to isolation in some of our more rural communities, where the access to public transport and other local facilities are not as strong. Some people can be left alone for days at a time without coming into contact with anybody. This isolation is a real concern.
Got News? Call Richard 0n 01454 800 120
Over the coming months, I will be hosting a series of Dementia Friends events across South Gloucestershire in conjunction with Bluebird Care and the Alzheimer’s Society. These events will aim to give an understanding of what it is like to live with dementia and to spot signs in other people both at home and in the community. They are very active and informal and no previous knowledge of dealing with dementia is needed. I will hold one Dementia Friend event a month and try to get around as many of our rural communities as possible. I will also be writing to local Post Office workers, Bus Drivers and other customer facing roles in our community, inviting them to come along to ensure we do everything possible to make people aware how to spot signs of Dementia, and how to act
positively when they are noticed. The Alzheimer’s society hit its target of one million Dementia Friends around the UK earlier this year and has now set an ambitious target of creating four million Dementia Friends by 2020. I hope our area can lead the charge on reaching that target. The more people who understand and are aware of dementia, the less fear and isolation there will be by sufferers, and those living with the illness are more likely to feel included and supported within their communities and can continue to live independently for longer. If you would like some more information about these sessions, or if you know a local village or town that would benefit from a Dementia Friends training, please do get in touch: luke.hall.mp@parliament.uk

Be a hero for the Air Ambulance THE Great Western Air Ambulance Charity is inviting people to don their capes and masks to raise money. They are asking people to summon their inner super hero in a new push to keep the lifesaving service in the air. GWAAC fundraising manager Emma Carter said: “Whether you’re a kid, or a big kid at heart, we are looking for schools, corporates, community groups, or just groups of friends to dress up as their favourite super hero in our ‘Be Your Hero’ event”. “All you need to do to help keep us flying is get a heroic group together, and ask them to make a donation to our mean,
green, flying machine – the GWAAC Air Ambulance – in exchange for a day out of the ordinary, dressed as the super hero of their choice”. Budding artists are also being asked to design their own hero comic book. The charity is looking for schools to get involved in our Be Your Hero event by designing a comic strip about GWACC and their heroic adventures. The winning comic will be professionally printed and turned into your very own book. To register, or request an entry pack, email Emma@gwaac. com.

ITH the looming prospect of exam results now behind us all, change has certainly hit most people. Whether you are the parent of an angst-ridden teen or the one who is going through this large life transition, things are going to be different from now on. And whilst this may fill many of us with dread, there is a different way to view all of this. Yes, the idea of living with complete strangers very soon and being plunged into student life may terrify me, but the simple fact is that this change will probably do me a lot of good. And whilst my family may think the house is unbearably quiet or may relish in the peace and tranquillity of a child-free zone, the reality of this transition certainly consumes us all. There are many mini transitions in our lives, as every day is completely different; and no matter how hard we try we can’t fully control every single aspect of our being. Although these situations may not be ideal, we cannot change them. No amount of worrying will physically change the way our days pan out, and it will certainly not impact or warp the decisions of those around us. So instead of looking backwards at the mishaps that have come our way before and wondering if these will

Whilst the future may seem absolutely terrifying as the fear of the unknown is something many of us experience and somewhat dwell on, looking into this unknown entity can allow us to see this ‘thing’ we call our future as something exciting, rather than truly terrifying. Sometimes the spontaneous events that prove a contrast to the typical routine that we let take over every single day, and they are the ones that we remember. Living in fear is no way to truly enjoy yourself, and rather than delving into our deepest darkest memories to find the worst in every situation, perhaps we should walk with our chins up and a grin on our face. So next time you decide whether or not to make that life decision, whether it be to apply for that job you were thinking about or simply leaving the house today, remember to look forward rather than behind, because no matter how hard we try we can never change the past. We can only change what hasn’t happened yet; we are in control.

Delight for Nick at British Open but event ends in injury for top Kiwi and spectator CHIPPING Sodbury eventer Nick Gauntlett earned a top 12 place in the British Open at Gatcombe Park with El Grado, a horse he bought in Australia at the end of last year. The pair had one showjump down in the feature class of the prestigious Festival of British Eventing to add to their dressage score but then jumped clear around the cross-country track. Although incurring time penalities across country, their unblemished jumping over the solid fences resulted in a rise up the leaderboard. Nick said: “El Grado completed a fantastic crosscountry round – very exciting for the future.” The final phase of the Open, with Gatcombe’s undulating ground adding to the challenge, always produces drama. But this year’s event nearly resulted in a tragic outcome for leading rider Andrew Nicholson, who had been well placed to retain his Open title from 2014. Having jumped the last of the 26 obstacles with Cillnabradden Evo, the pair had a crashing fall, resulting in Andrew receiving a severe neck injury. The Wiltshire-based New Zealander underwent an eighthour operation at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford to repair the damage, later revealing he could have been paralysed. He said: “I have been incredibly lucky. My surgeon, Mr Jeremy Reynolds, told me that the injury I sustained to my neck would have caused paralysis
at the time of injury, in 98% of cases. I was extremely fortunate this did not happen. I underwent an eight hour operation where they repaired the fractures and stabilised my cervical spine. This procedure in itself was not without risk, and I cannot thank enough, the team of spinal surgeons at the John Radcliffe hospital, for what they have done.My surgeon, Jeremy Reynolds, told me the injury I sustained to my neck would have caused paralysis at the time of injury in 98 per cent of cases. I was extremely fortunate this did not happen.” Andrew is now home and fully mobile but won’t be riding again this season as his recovery will take time. But he said he was already looking forward to getting back to full fitness. The Open title went to Australian Christopher Burton on TS Jamaimo, ahead of Kiwi Jonelle Price on Classic Moet, with third-placed Nicola Wilson becoming national champion as best of the British with Beltane Queen. Former Badminton Horse Trials champions, Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh, lost their chance of victory with a fall six fences from home. Running loose, the horse collided with a spectator, who was taken to hospital with reported broken ribs. Oliver Townend won the British intermediate championships on Note Worthy and had a one-two in the British novice championships with Sonic De Sermentol and Ridire Dorcha.

Frampton Endure Tough Pre-Season Friendlies FRAMPTON Athletic’s preseason friendly schedule was always set out to be a tough one, however, with just one win and one draw out of 8 friendlies,
maybe the bar was set a bit too high in hindsight. That said, Frampton’s players will no doubt be suitably prepared to fight hard for the
A sure sign of the new season pitch preparation
Bigger than ever, the Oranges are ready for new season ALL of the players and coaches of Coalpit Heath FC are excited about the upcoming season which starts on Sunday 6th September, Jeremy Kinsman reports. Twelve teams will be representing the Oranges from Under 7’s right up to the Under 21’s, plus we have a rapidly growing soccer tots section. Such has been the increase in player membership that three new teams have been formed, with Colts teams being formed at Under 11 and Under 14 age groups plus a newly formed Under 21’s team. Football has still been played through the summer with many teams entering summer tournaments and even some of our coaches have been meeting up regularly to rediscover their football skills. Behind the scenes the committee have been preparing pitches for the new season ensuring all teams have the right levels of training equipment and new team kits. The club would also like to say a big thank you to the Badminton Arms who have raised over £200 for the club at their recent fun day. The club is always looking for new players and anybody interested should call Jer Kinsman on 07812 045259.
season ahead, having been put through their paces for 2 months by Yinka Brownlow and Nick Talbot, supported by David Hillier, as well as a number of tough pre-season friendlies. The players should be ready and raring to go. Frampton started their preseason friendlies with a home match against Charfield FC from Division 2 of the Stroud League. The ended in a 4-2 victory for Charfield. Frampton then followed that up with a double header against Iron Acton’s First and Reserve team respectively. Against the First team, Frampton threw away a 2 goal lead to finish 2-2 and against the Reserves, Iron Acton romped to a 5-1 victory. The following week saw Frampton head over the Severn Bridge for their now annual friendly against Whitecroft FC in the Forest of Dean. The match started as an even affair, but the fitness levels of the side from the Forest of Dean proved too much for Frampton, who faded away in the second half of the game and ran out eventual winners 4-0. Frampton’s ‘A’ team faced Tormarton FC, a side in Division 3 of the Bristol & District league, but they proved too much for Frampton, as Tormarton strolled to a 6-2 victory over the side in the division below. Frampton started to bring their pre-season schedule to a close as they faced another double-header, this time
AFC Mangotsfield were the opposition. The first teams played in the first fixture, and saw Frampton pick up their only win of their pre-season schedule, as they romped to a 4-1 win. However, the Reserves match was quite the opposite. With Frampton giving a number of new players their first match for the club, the Reserves side from Mangotsfield dominated the game from start to finish and ran out 7-3 winners and rarely looked troubled. Frampton wrapped up their pre-season friendlies on the bank holiday weekend, as they faced a tough match against last season Suburban Premier Division side Mangotsfield Sports. With a number of first team regulars unavailable through holidays and work, it was a side patched up with Reserve team players. However, the game was very even affair from the start and Frampton gave a good a very good account of themselves against higher level opposition. Mangotsfield Sports were clinical In front of goal and took their chances well, as they beat the home side 4-2, which came thanks, in part, to a last minute penalty. All three of Frampton’s sides start their league campaign with night games on Tuesday 2nd, Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th, against Greyfriars Athletic (First Team), Greyfriars Athletic Reserves (Reserve Team) and Cutters Friday (‘A’ Team).
AFC Mangotsfield score their only goal of the game.

Frampton’s first win under their belt WITH the season about to get underway, Frampton Rugby have had a good start to their preparations, as Joe Cleary explains.
Frampton Cotterell RFC opened their pre-season account with a win against Stothert & Pitt. With 35 players available for the game and a solid pre-season training behind them, Frampton entered the fixture in high spirits. Debutant Karl Hancock hit some strong lines in midfield early doors and the patterns that Frampton had been working on were paying early dividends with multiple line breaks. Matt Lawrence and Joe Bennett made clean breaks. The tries didn’t quite come, but the start was positive.
In the 2nd quarter, 13 changes led to a period without the ball whilst the players adjusted, but strong, organised and committed defence led to possession being regained and Frampton scored their first try.
Their second try came from an attack on the right, and Kobie “McGlasshand” offloaded wonderfully inside to Brandon Ball who went in untouched. Throughout the last two periods the players grew into
the fixture and despite a couple of conceded tries, Frampton’s attacking play really stepped up. On debut, Doug Colwill made numerous breaks, each time taking the correct options and through ”McGlasshand”, Brandon Ball and Joe Bennett, Tim Child running a great support line finished the first one off and then Bennett himself flew in under the posts. “McGlasshand” himself scored a try and others joined the scoresheet as the game headed towards the final whistle. Doug Colwill was named man of the day and there was no doubt the squad left with a very positive feeling. Final score 38-10.
Frampton Rugby selected for return to playing scheme FRAMPTON has been selected as one of 50 clubs across the country - and the only club in Bristol for the Return to Rugby (R2R) programme. The R2R programme is a coaching and playing programme that provides a safe and enjoyable reintroduction to rugby for players who wish to return to the game. Joe Cleary from the club said; “We are using R2R to reach out to former players and warmly invite them to visit their old club again and enjoy a great social opportunity as R2R sessions occur during the rugby World Cup. Not only will they get a planned reintroduction to rugby, they will get the chance to cheer on their side during the world’s premier rugby competition”. Former players who are interested are being invited to come to the club at 6.30pm on Friday 18th September, just before the rugby world cup opener of England vs Fiji. More information about Return to Rugby can be found at: www.returntorugby.com or http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/ framptoncotterell/.

Old Man Fram lets his hair down after a successful season FRAMPTON Cotterell cricket club had good reason to enjoy their end of season BBQ as the first eleven secured their third successive promotion by finishing division one runners up, Jimmy Dickinson reports. Gary Winsor’s side had earlier seen off Lodway CC in emphatic style, with star batsman Luke Baker making amends for an earlier golden duck by picking up three wickets with his rarely used floated deliveries. The real star of the game though was Ross Shorland, who after compiling a key partnership with Phil Cordy, bagged a pair of catches and effected a fine run out in the field which saw him collect the man of the match award in his last game for the club before relocating to California. Despite the last game blip, the burly Baker ended the season as one of the leading batsmen in the division with over 600 runs for the season at an average of over 40. And Hayden Botha weighed in with 28 scalps to finish as the first team’s highest wicket taker. Winsor said of his side’s achievements: “It’s been great to see Luke grow in stature this year and he’s quickly making a name for himself as someone the opposition really need to fear. But in truth the key to this season’s success was the depth of batting all the way down and the strength and variety of the bowling attack. Everybody played their part.”
Whether or not Fram can make it four promotions on the bounce is hard to predict as the 2016 season brings with it massive changes to the league set up, with nobody truly yet know what division they will be in or who they will be playing against. Meanwhile, the 2nd XI celebrated a last game win against St Mary Redcliffe with the veterans leading the charge as Ian Roylance and Mark Chaplin were in the runs with Paul Crowley in miserly mood as ever with the ball. That left them tied for third place in division eight, one place outside the promotion zone.
This was a good result after a fairly up and down season and were it not for a couple of missed opportunities in close games against the top sides, the Fram could have been celebrating double promotion. However with several of the younger players making great strides, they can look forward to next season with increasing optimism. John Hughes’ third XI couldn’t quite make it a treble winning finish as they went down in a last ball thriller against Portishead - Navin Dahyia saw his final delivery squirt off the edge of the bat agonisingly out of reach of the slip fielder and away
to the boundary. Earlier in the day, Dahiya had starred with the bat with a finely crafted 60 out of the sides total of 158 assisted by the evergreen Ian Woods. This saw them conclude the season in a slightly disappointing 7th place in division eleven, however this year was a particularly close race and with as many wins as losses, it was still an immensely enjoyable season for all who played. So with the sun setting on a season which saw an incredible 95% of league games played to a finish, the Fram players and supporters enjoyed their well earned cheeseburgers.
Winterbourne finish strongly to clinch promotions Winterbourne’s cricketers went into the last weekend of the season with high hopes of grabbing a couple of promotion slots, writes Paul Dagger. They were already celebrating victory in the Bristol & District 20 over knock out competition, where they defeated Stapleton in the final to lift the cup for the first time in the club’s history. Final league positions are subject to minor changes, but it would appear that both the second and third XI sides will finish in third place. Both teams are subject to playing in new leagues next year, as cricket throughout Gloucestershire undergoes a huge reorganisation. A strong season for each side,
led brilliantly by Damien Lingard and Kevin Slade respectively. Young skipper George Ford led the first team to runners up spot. They came tantalisingly close to pipping leaders Claverham, however they skittled Stapleton for just 51 on the final Saturday to ensure they took the title. Disappointment at not securing a famous league/cup double was short lived, however, as finishing second also means promotion to Tier 3 of the new league structure. Nick Bracey’s heroic fourth team also look to have secured promotion by beating Carsons & Mangotsfield on the last day. They will now be playing at their highest ever level

within the league. In addition, it has been confirmed that the club will enter a fifth team into league cricket for Summer 2016. Winterbourne have also had a young development squad this year, led by Mike Green in the Sunday Village League. They finished the season unbeaten, and are crowned Division 3 Champions - another promotion. In youth cricket, the club continues to maintain its focus on children aged from 7 to 17. The stand out performers this year have been the Under 15s, who have completed the league and cup double and also go for the 40 over Gloucestershire YCL title on September 20th at Charlton Kings in Cheltenham.

Summer hockey success for Pucklechurch PUCKLECHURCH are celebrating a top of the table performance this summer, finishing the league programme in style as Lisa Whitehead reports. The top of the league table has remained extremely close with everyone wanting to take the title of Summer League winners and with only 4 games remaining the Pucklechurch girls were as keen as ever to take it. After a very impressive performance against Yate, winning 5-1, we knew our next game would be a tough one. A top of the table clash against City of Bath. It would prove to be a very fast, close game with both sides going at it hard. Everyone gave it their all but the final whistle blew with neither team able to get one past the goalie and it finished 0-0. With this result it became even closer, so we had to make sure we won our next game - against Jaspers.
Forward Rhian Phillips either had had a bad day at work or was determined to make up from not scoring last week as she had a stormer. With some cracking individual play and of course some help from her fellow teammates setting her up, she bagged herself a hatrick. Jaspers continued to battle on however and take a few shots themselves but Puckles defence proved too strong and the game would finish at 3-0 to the girls in yellow. With this win behind us and with our big goal difference, we knew we couldn’t be caught and would be crowned winners of the Summer League with one game remaining. With a strong 13, our last game seen us face Bristol Ladies. Not wanting to sit back and take it easy, everyone played their socks off. With superb passing, control and teamwork, forward Emily Pollock put us in the lead early on. A second goal would
then be scored by captain Lisa Whitehead - a cracking strike from a short corner. Emily would bag herself a second to make it 3-0 at half time. With all the girls on such a high we continued the pressure in the second half and with a great ball into the D from Whitehead, it was met by
left wing Sophie Edwards on the far post who sent it flying into the net. Final whistle 4-0. With 12 matches played we scored a very impressive 41 goals and only conceded 10, making this our best summer league to date and take the title ‘Champions’ for the first time.
