Festival avoids move to September - for now THE Frampton Festival is to stay in its July date for the next two years, despite the parish council wanting to move the popular event to the Autumn. The council had wanted to stop cutting the grass on the Centenary Field in July to help

increase the biodiversity of wildlife in the area. Council officials expressed a desire to cut the grass in late August or September. The grass has been cut in July for the last five years to enable the festival to take place in the

lower field, but council officers had told the festival committee that they wanted to change the cutting time until later in the year. The move would have meant shifting the date of the festival Continued on Page 6.

Top rating for Winterbourne afterschool club AN after-school and holiday club in Winterbourne has been highly rated by an Ofsted inspector. Rachael Williams said children thrived at the Greenfield Club, which meets at the Greenfield Centre in Park Avenue. She rated the club as outstanding, saying the “very caring and knowledgeable staff” met the emotional well-being of children “exceedingly well in a very supportive environment”. Ms Williams said: “Children are extremely helpful and their behaviour is exemplary. “The manager is an exceptional role model and empowers her staff highly effectively. There are extremely robust arrangements to ensure that all staff receive high-quality coaching and mentoring.” The organisation is a non-profit making charity which provides a daily breakfast club and after-school facility for children attending Winterbourne’s Elm Park and St Michael’s primary schools. During school holidays club, a range of activities are offered, from crafts and games to various trips. Manager Sian Pumford said: “We’re super proud of our outstanding inspection report. The team has worked really hard to ensure that our standard of care is at it’s highest.”

Cash windfall for pitches at The Park MORE than £238,000 in developers’ contributions will be used to improve grass pitches at The Park in Frampton Cotterell. The money was allocated to Frampton Cotterell Parish Council, which owns the playing fields and is responsible for the running of the site. It will be used for work to improve drainage and the quality of the turf on one rugby pitch, two football pitches and a cricket outfield. The total cost of the project is more than £251,000 and the council said it was committed to making up the shortfall using its own funds or through match funding from other organisations. As well as better drainage, the project will also improve the capacity of the pitches. They have suffered not only from poor drainage but also an uneven playing surface, which has resulted in a reduction in the number of matches being played

on site. The funding has come from section 106 agreements, through which developers agree to make

payments to local projects. Such agreements were in place for the housing development at Windmill Green,

n NEWS EDUCATION inspectors are not due to return for three years to the newly named and recently transferred Winterbourne Academy to give their next assessment of the school. The troubled Winterbourne International Academy had been in special measures since March 2017 but is now considered closed by Ofsted after leaving the Ridings’ Federation of Academies. It was officially taken over by the Olympus Academy Trust (OAT) on February 1. With a new unique reference number, it means the school no longer has a fixed designation from the education watchdog. A document drawn up for candidates applying to become headteacher of the academy said: “The preparation work has been done for a new headteacher to come into post and take Winterbourne back to its previous reputational standing and re-establish pride and confidence in the community. “As an academy with a new URN (unique reference number), Winterbourne Academy currently has no fixed Ofsted

Next inspection of academy three years away designation and now has a threeyear period before Ofsted are expected to return. This will give time for a new headteacher to embed and consolidate practice.” However, a Department for Education adviser did assess the school in recent weeks. Olympus chief executive Dave Baker told parents: “There is still much to do. An external review conducted by a DfE education advisor at the start of February concluded that we have successfully stabilised the academy but that we now need to accelerate improvement.” OAT provided interim leadership at Winterbourne ahead of the transfer, with Peter Smart seconded from the Castle School in Thornbury to fill the role of interim principal. Mr Baker said Mr Smart had decided to return to Thornbury for the start of the next academic year in September, resulting in the permanent headteacher post being advertised. Interviews will

be scheduled for mid-April. Mr Baker thanked Mr Smart for “playing a key stabilising role as the interim principal during a turbulent time at Winterbourne”. That difficult period included dealing with financial problems, which have now been tackled. Mr Baker said: “I am pleased to be able to confirm we are in a much more positive financial position than last year.” Meanwhile, as reported in last month’s Frome Valley Voice,

a survey was carried out to decide on the future name of the academy. Of more than 700 responses, most went for the dropping of the word international from the title to leave the name as Winterbourne Academy. The vast majority also wanted the school logo to remain. Eventually there will be no reference to the Ridings’ Federation of Academies, as it will cease to exist.

Councillors agreed to allow the festival to continue in its July time slot for the next two years. Talks have continued over the future scheduling of the event, with two councillors attending the last festival committee meeting to discuss the situation further. Councillor Sue Walters, who was at that meeting, told Frome Valley Voice; “We want to establish a cutting regime for the Centenary Field. We are definitely not trying to stop the festival, it’s a good event that brings people to the village. I’d like to think we can come to an agreement.”

to September, or holding it at The Park instead, both of which options were opposed by the festival organisers. Representatives of the festival committee attended March’s council meeting to express their disappointment over a lack of consultation over the council’s plans to increase biodiversity at the Centenary field. Minutes of the council meeting report that members of the council were dismayed to hear how the matter had been previously handled and agreed a longer lead in time was required.

Landmark school building set to be saved A CAMPAIGN to save a 170-yearold school building in Frampton Cotterell looks set to be won. The future of the premises in Woodend Road had been in doubt as a result of plans to provide the village with a new 420-place primary school. Pupils and staff in the infant section of Watermore Primary School will move out of the historic building when its junior section in Lower Stone Close is re-built in a £4.5 million scheme. The scheme will finally achieve an ambition to have all children and staff in one location - a long-held aim that has existed since the merger of Brockeridge Infant School and Highcroft Junior School into Watermore Primary some seven years ago. But the infant site will be sold to help pay for the re-building project, bringing in up to £1.5 million. Local people and parish leaders were worried that it could lead to the demolition of

the old infant school building, which has a foundation stone that reads British Schools 1846. But plans drawn up for the Woodend Road site now refer to the old building being converted into six flats as part of an outline application to for 22 homes. As well as the new school in Lower Stone Close, the plans also include the building of five new homes. Local history group members, Stella and Councillor Andy Beecher, researched the history of the old school and discovered it had been founded by members of Zion Congregational Church to enable “poor children from Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath to be educated”. Campaigners said generations of local children had been educated in the landmark building and it held memories for many local families, most of whom would be “horrified” if it was flattened to make way for new development.

n NEWS DRAMA enthusiast and Shopmobility volunteer Ann Aplin was among nearly 30 unsung heroes recognised for their contribution to South Gloucestershire’s communities. The community awards are presented each year by South Gloucestershire Council’s chairman or woman at a ceremony attended by the winners and their families. Ann, of Iron Acton, was recognised for her extensive local volunteering, having been nominated by those at Yatebased Shopmobility - a service that allows people with mobility problems to maintain their independence by hiring mobility scooters and wheelchairs so they can use town services and the shopping centre facilities. Ann said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering for a charity that helps people to be included in such everyday activities as shopping, visiting banks, hairdressers, dentists and meeting up with friends at cafes, which so many of us take for

Honour for Iron Acton volunteer granted." She is also involved with community drama in her home village, directing and producing local productions for all ages to enjoy as participants and audiences. Shopmobility South Gloucestershire vice-chairman, David Bell, said: "We are delighted that Ann has won this award - she thoroughly deserves it. “She volunteered as a trustee for many years and volunteered in the office dealing with clients and hiring out our scooters and wheelchairs." The service is based in Yate Library, and attracts users from all over South Gloucestershire, and beyond. The awards were presented to recipients at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s WISE Campus by the council’s current chairman, Ian Blair.

Also present were the lord lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, and vicelord lieutenant, Robert Bernays. Councillor Blair said: “These awards are a great way to say thank you to some of the many volunteers who make South Gloucestershire such a great place to live and work.

“While reading through and shortlisting the nominations, it was obvious that those put forward for an award are held in high esteem in their local communities. “The positive impact which their commitment and hard work has on others is extremely uplifting and encouraging.”

Frome Valley 10K already sold out A NEW 10k race in Winterbourne has proved so popular that it has already sold 200 tickets. Following the success of The Globe Trot and Watermore 10k a small team of Elm Park Primary School parents are busy organising their own 'running' fundraiser for the school on the morning of Sunday 29 April. The Frome Valley 10k is a multi-terrain race that will take runners around Winterbourne village roads for the initial 5k, then dip down and join the picturesque Frome Valley Walkway to enjoy the trail before running up the Hilly Fields and along Watleys End to finish in the school field. The team behind the event are hoping local people will come out and support the event and are looking for volunteers to marshal part of the route to direct and encourage the runners. Carol Bond, Deputy Headteacher at Elm Park said: "Our amazing PTFA have worked tirelessly to organise Elm Park Primary School's first 10K run. Sport is such an important part of the children's school life and it is wonderful to see the adults within our local community helping to promote a healthy lifestyle whilst also raising money for the benefit of our children.” If you would like to help with the event, email: elmparkptfa@ gmail.com.

Project planned to combat loneliness and isolation FROME Valley Medical Centre’s Patient Participation Group is to launch a project to help tackle loneliness and isolation. The Combat Loneliness and Isolation Project (CLIP) will make it easier for patients and their relatives and carers to find local information and contacts. Organisers say feeling lonely or isolated affects people of all ages and can have a devastating impact on an individual’s health and wellbeing. Often a person doesn’t know where to find or contact organisations that could help them. If they can’t or don’t access the internet, this can make matters worse as much information is only available online. Chair of the Patient Participation Group Jane

Andrews says: ‘CLIP will be primarily for patients within the practice catchment area, but could be used by other individuals and communities. We will produce information which is easy to understand and readily available in the surgery waiting room.’ The idea is not to produce yet another database but simply to focus on those organisations,

groups and projects which will help with loneliness and are available in - or can be easily accessed from the practice area. The group is appealing for any information that might be useful for the CLIP project. Information can be emailed to fvmcppg@gmail.com or put into the CLIP box in the Medical Centre’s waiting room.

Charity couple raising awareness of hallucinations

A WINTERBOURNE couple who are South Gloucestershire co-ordinators for the charity RP Fighting Blindness are helping to raise awareness of a common condition among people who've lost their sight. Ron and Gina Pritchard work to let more people know about the disease retinitis pigmentosa – known as RP – which leads to vision loss and blindness. They also raise money for research that is aimed at finding a treatment or cure for the 25,000 people in the UK who are affected by the condition. The couple are now helping to spread the word about Charles Bonnet syndrome, which causes people who have lost a lot of vision to experience hallucinations - seeing things that are not really there. Too often, the condition is misdiagnosed as dementia because too few healthcare professionals are aware of the syndrome. That then makes sufferers live with the condition

in silence because they don’t want to appear to have dementia. Ophthalmologists also do not always warn their patients with low vision that they might be developing the syndrome. The Pritchards said the website www. charlesbonnetsyndrome.uk had more information about the condition. Among the many fund raising activities run to support the charity’s work is a used stamps appeal Stamps to be donated should be torn, or preferably cut, from letters with the corner of the envelopes bearing them and sent to 22 Huckford Road, Winterbourne, Bristol, BS36 1EA. All those sent in will be sold to stamp dealers. Ron and Gina also give talks to local groups about RP and any organisation interested should email bristolsglosfightingblindness@ gmail.com or phone 01454 772927.

Medieval Barn ready for Summer THE Medieval Barn in Winterbourne is set for a busy summer of events this year, starting with the return of a Jazz Night on Saturday 26 May. After last year's sell-out performance, members of the University of the West of England Big Band and singers return again. The Jazz will be followed on Sunday 10 June with the popular Medieval Fayre. The Company of Chivalry will portray medieval life, showing what life was like at the time the Barn was built in 1342. The Barn will also host a one day Basket Weaving Workshop on Saturday 23 June.

Anyone for tennis at Lyde Green? PLANS for a David Lloyd centre on a site between the ring road and Folly Brook at Lyde Green will meet a need for leisure facilities in Emersons Green and Downend, its backers say. The nearest public facility is Downend Outdoor Sports Centre and the closest David Lloyd Centre is at Westbury-on-Trym, nearly eight miles away. "David Lloyd have a longstanding interest in the site and are keen to develop the site into the much required and demanded sports facility," the organisation says. Its proposals include three weather protected tennis courts and a show court, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a multi-purpose sports hall, gym facilities, 245 car parking and 20 cycle parking facilities. The site is off the Rosary roundabout and because of its proximity to the ring road and to overhead power lines is considered unsuitable for alternative forms of development. The David Lloyd organisation has worked with council officers to come up what it says are the best possible proposals, although

a suggested roof terrace and additional glass to increase natural light were deemed too costly. It says the proposals are an improvement on plans put forward in 2005 and 2010. The scheme will be considered by the council's planning committee. The public can comment online: find the plans on the South Gloucestershire website with the reference PK18/0692/F David Lloyd centres, founded by a former GB Davis Cup player, have some 475,000 members across Europe and employ more than 6,000 people, including an expert health and fitness team of over 1,800 professionals alongside more than 400 tennis coaches. In the UK, it has 800 tennis courts, 180 badminton courts and 140 squash courts, and 150 swimming pools.

n AROUND THE W.I Winterbourne Evening W.I Fortunately our meetings in February and March were either side of the recent spell of atrocious weather and were both very well attended. At our February meeting our speaker was Kathryn Smeaton who talked to us about making jewellery, and in particular memory bracelets. Kathryn demonstrated the technique and many of us tried our hand at this craft, producing a bracelet to take home Our team of Skittlers came fourth in the the Frome Valley Group WI Skittle competition, which was won by Mangotsfield WI. At our March meeting, which was held on International Women’s Day, we had a talk from Mark from the Bristol based Blood Bikes Charity. Have an old pair of boots that you no longer need? Why not recycle them into planters and take part in Floral Friends’ Floral Boots display? We’re inviting everyone (all residents, businesses, associations, community groups and schools within Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath) to plant up a boot, or a pair of boots (normal size please – no giant ones permitted), with the colour theme of red, white and blue to help commemorate the centenary of the First World War armistice and the 100th anniversary of the RAF. Applications will need to be completed by 6th July and the boots displayed in front gardens in the week Saturday 21st July – Saturday 28th July. We will produce a map of where the boots are located so that people may walk around the village to see them all. n LITERARY FESTIVAL Frome Valley Voice is pleased to be the media partner of the Cotswold Edge Literary festival. We will be bringing you the latest news ahead of the week long event from June 16 - 24. This month we highlight some of the big, and not so big, names that will be in South Gloucestershire for the event.

Susan Lewis Best selling author SUSAN Lewis lives in South Gloucestershire and is a prolific - and best selling - author. She might have been born in Bristol and is enjoying life back in the area now, but in-between life was a roller coaster ride played out in the south of France and California. She’s the author of almost 50 books, including two memoirs. Saturday June 16 High tea and chat with Susan Lewis. Hampton’s Deli, High Street, Chipping Sodbury at 3.30 and 5.30pm. Tickets £8.50 (includes tea and cake) Susan Lewis was born in 1956, in Bristol. My father was a Welsh miner, a poet, an engineer and a

thinker. My mother was one of 13 children who, at 20, persuaded my father to spend his bonus on an engagement ring instead of a motorbike. We were a normal, happy, nuclear family, living in a spanking new council house on the outskirts of town – my mother’s pride and joy. I was 9 and my brother 5 when my mother died of cancer. She was 33, my father was 37, and he never married again.

Sathnam Sanghera Author of ‘The Boy With The Top Knot’ and Times journalist SATHNAM Sanghera is perhaps best known for his best selling novel, The Boy With The Top Knot, an account of growing up as the son of Punjabi parents in Wolverhampton. It was recently made into a BBC film. Sathnam has also written the critically acclaimed Marriage Material, and you can find his writing more regularly in The Times newspaper. Saturday 23 June Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church, High Street Chipping Sodbury. 7.30 pm (Doors open at 7pm) Tickets: £10.50. Sathnam Sanghera was born

to Punjabi parents in the West Midlands in 1976, attended Wolverhampton Grammar School and graduated from Christ's College, Cambridge with a first class degree in English Language and Literature in 1998. His first book, The Boy With The Topknot: A Memoir of Love, Secrets and Lies in Wolverhampton, published by Penguin, was shortlisted for the

I went to the boarding school, a rogue little pupil in amongst all the posh girls, with their plummy voices, rich parents and exotic tales of faraway places. I yearned for my mother and father, but it was for the best, I was told. I took it upon myself to get expelled. It took a while, and I had rather a fabulous time achieving it When I was 18 I got a job at HTV in Bristol, and at 22 I moved to London to work for Thames. I began as a secretary in news and current affairs, then trained as a production assistant and moved on to light entertainment and drama. It was a love of drama, combined with a fierce ambition, that got me knocking on the Controller’s door to ask what steps to take to become a producer. “Oh, go away and write something,” came the reply. So I did.

2008 Costa Biography Award, the 2009 PEN/Ackerley Prize and named 2009 Mind Book of the Year. Sathnam’s first novel, Marriage Material was been picked by Waterstones as one of the fiction debuts of 2013. Before becoming a writer Sathnam (among other things) worked at a burger chain, a hospital laundry, a market research firm, a sewing factory and a literacy project in New York. Between 1998 and 2006 he was at The Financial Times, where he worked (variously) as a news reporter in the UK and the US, specialised in writing about the media industries, worked across the paper as Chief Feature Writer, and wrote a weekly column. Sathnam joined The Times as a columnist and feature writer in 2007 and also reviews cars for Management Today magazine.

Since then she has been exploring her Scottish roots, first of all with A Kettle

Thursday 21 June Venue TBC FROM sherry in Shakespeare to fine wines in modern classics, drinks have always had a place in literature. Our evening is hosted by a man who knows both subjects inside out. Tristan Darby is the owner of the Bristol Wine School, but he’s also an actor who also the drinks columnists for local magazines. Enjoy an evening of readings from famous texts, paired with tasting the drinks described in the book. Tristan Darby has experience spanning over 20 years in the catering, hospitality and wine trade - interspersed with time touring as a professional actor and singer. Tristan is drinks columnist for The Bath Magazine and The Bristol Magazine, and is a judge for both the Bristol and Bath Good Food Awards. He no longer acts but promises to incorporate as much theatre as he can into the evening of tasting. However, he still sings, and can occasionally be found gigging with his jazz and blues quartet. Tristan has earned a great reputation for educational but unstuffy wine courses and wine tastings he delivers, so expect to feel welcome, have fun, meet new people and learn something new in relaxed and friendly surroundings.

AF Harrold Children’s author and poet. WE are delighted that AF Harrold is coming to our literary festival. Wednesday 20 June Winterbourne Academy 7.00 (Doors open at 6.30pm) Tickets £5 A.F. Harrold writes and performs for adults and children. He is the owner of many books, a handful of hats, a few good

ideas and one beard. He spends his time showing off on stage, writing poems and books, and stroking his beard (it helps churn

the ideas). He lives in Reading with a stand-up comedian and two cats. The basic biography goes like this: (1) Born in Sussex in 1975, did childhood things. Started writing poetry. (2) Went to university in Reading in the early 1990s, did student things. Continued writing poetry. (3) Got a job in a Blackwell's bookshop in the late 1990s, did work things. Started taking part in poetry slams. (4) Became a full-time poet when the bookshop was shut down in the early 2000s, did jobbing-poet things. Started winning (some) poetry slams. (5) Ran some poetry workshops in schools in the late 2000s, did more jobbing-poet things. Started

(Due to be published in April 2018) Ali also writes short fiction in a variety of genres and she enjoys performing her work at local live events. She is a member of Writers Unchained of Bristol and has helped judge the highly regarded Stroud Short Stories event. Her short fiction has been listed in competitions and published in several anthologies. In 2017 she won the Evesham Festival of Words Adult Short Story Competition with The Bird of Wax which forms part of In the Blink of an Eye.

writing poems and stories for kids. (6) First children's novel published by Bloomsbury in the early 2010s, did more of that stuff. Pottered and loafed. (7) Repeat stage (6). Although AFH doesn't do so many events for grown ups these days, he still tends to go where he's invited (if the money is right), faces the direction he's asked to face and reads poems for the correct length of time. Sometimes he talks more than he poems. Sometimes he sings a song(ish) instead of talking. Sometimes he is funny. Sometimes he is serious. Sometimes he dances. Sometimes he shows pictures of his cats.

Hospital trauma team urges riders to wear safety gear

THE Major Trauma team at Southmead Hospital is calling for riders in the Frome Valley to wear safety gear whenever they head out on their horses. Almost 70 people suffered injuries relating to horses in the Severn Trauma network in 2017. A total of 68 patients were admitted to hospitals across the region - which includes South

Gloucestershire. Of these, 34 were seen at the adult Major Trauma Centre at Southmead Hospital. In most cases (56) injuries were sustained as a result of falling from horses, while 11 were due to a blow from a horse. There were also several deaths as a result of horse-related injuries in 2017.

WOODLANDS PLUMBING & HEATING

Severn Trauma Network Adult Lead, Dr Ben Walton, said: “As a major trauma service we see serious - and even fatal injuries related to horse riding and we want to encourage riders to take any precautions they can to minimise their risk of injuries so they can enjoy their hobby safely." “We encourage people to

wear helmets, body protection and long boots to protect themselves when out riding. Many of the people who came to us in 2017 with injuries related to horses were wearing protective gear and this meant that their injuries were not as significant as they would have been without them.”

The Blues Band - 39 Years on the road and heading for Thornbury THE Blues Band is to appear at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury on June 1 as they celebrate their 39th year together in 2018. Band members Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Tom McGuinness, Rob Townsend and Gary Fletcher are still pulling in audiences with their showmanship and virtuosity. Many of the Blues Band’s younger fans weren’t born when these five musicians, already music industry veterans, decided to fly in the face of musical fashion in 1979 and form a band ‘just to play the blues’. About 20 albums and thousands of gigs later, they’ve earned a reputation as one of the finest exponents of the blues tradition in all its forms. IT’S taken a while to arrive, but now it’s time to think about Spring and some sunshine to cheer us up. Here is how to do the natural look and the six must have’s for spring To blush - a barely there blush. For that healthy glow, a pink blush is now too baby doll so pick a colour carefully, seek advice and always apply carefully. No contouring it you want that more natural chic look. It’s more about bringing light and warmth to your face in a subtle way. Try a peach blush or a light bronzer just a couple of shades darker than your own skin and apply on the high point of your face. You can use a highlighter but use it sparingly, just on a cheek bones. Use a smaller brush to get to the target areas. Mascara – spring is about a subtle look, almost going without. But try a new type of mascara that is more about lifting and curling rather than thickening; in a salon an eye lash lift or perm, making it much easier in the morning. Good Hair Conditioner – it’s no longer about poker straight hair, but more about embracing you’re the natural fall and shape of your hair. But no one’s going to be happy with their own frizz, kinks or curls, so it time to up your conditioning routine. If you don’t already make sure you conditioner your hair either with a daily conditioner or a weekly conditioner, it will help tame your locks giving a more natural finish without the frizz. Short chic nails – when it comes to working with what you’ve got, short nails are nearly always the best.

Use a strong solid colour, dusky pink, lilacs are great for spring or mix up with a new on trend nude – grey, mushroom or taupe Hydrating – drink lots of water, but you can also try a moisturising serum under your normal moisturiser. After the winter months, with central heating on, our skin is often more dehydrated than we would like. Tinted brow – less thick lines, but still the need to use a coloured waxy balm or gel to lightly brush over your brows and you’ll get a more natural look than with a pencil.

Merlin staff go back to school

Pupils at a village primary school were treated to a close encounter with local wildlife last week. Staff from local housing association Merlin visited Iron Acton Primary School as

Merlin’s Customer Liaison Officer Sarah Durbin said: “It was a really good day. All the pupils really seemed to enjoy themselves, they were really engaged during all the activities; it was great to see them so interested.”

Merlin customers scrutinise repairs Customers of a local housing association have begun investigating to see how it deals with their repairs calls.

Customer Roger Chillcott listening to incoming calls with Customer Service Advisor Leah Harvey.

part of ongoing community engagement work it is carrying out to accompany the development of new homes in the village. They were joined by staff from Merlin’s construction partners Lovell, ecologist Rob Craine and Yvonne Cox from Hedgehog Rescue in Yate. Throughout the morning all the school’s pupils had the chance to get up close with a hedgehog, see skulls of local wildlife and decorate and make bat and bird boxes which will be put up around the school grounds after Easter. They also had a challenge to work together in teams to build their own mini home.

The housing association is building 27 new homes in Algars Drive, Chilwood Close and Nibley Lane in the village. The homes are part of 72 affordable homes Merlin is building across several sites in Iron Acton and neighbouring Coalpit Heath to replace 44 existing non-traditional properties which were in poor condition and suffering from issues such as damp and draughts. The new properties are a mix of rental and shared ownership homes. So far Merlin has completed 12 homes in Coalpit Heath, with the remaining homes in both villages due to be completed in phases before the end of the year.

Seven Merlin customers are spending the next couple of months analysing how the association’s repairs service deals with all aspects of repairs, from the moment a customer makes a request to the completion of the job. The project began with four customers spending the morning shadowing Merlin’s customer service team at its offices in Chipping Sodbury, listening to calls as they came in from customers and hearing how staff dealt with them. One of the customers listening in was Roger Chillcot who said he was impressed with what he heard. “The customer service advisors have got to handle so many different types of calls,” he said. “ I was very impressed by what I heard and came away feeling like I’d learned a lot.” Having listened to live customer calls, the scrutiny group will next be reviewing some recorded calls to see how staff responded to incoming repair queries. Once the group has completed its report it will present it to Merlin’s Board later in the year.

n THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH

A

BOUT two hundred years ago a brilliant student of mathematics, Kirke White, was sitting his examination paper at Cambridge University. When he had finished all the problems set he had time to spare and had to remain in the examination hall until the full period of time had expired. To pass the time he started to compose the first ten lines of a hymn that has become known as " Oft in danger, oft in woe, Onward Christian soldiers go...". At the end of the examination the paper with the words on it were handed in. Sixteen years later the mathematics paper, with White's words on it, was obtained by Mrs. Fuller-Maitland who was compiling a hymn book. As the hymn was not finished she showed it to her fourteen year old daughter, Frances, who within a short time added fourteen new lines to complete the hymn. It is interesting to note that White originally wrote the first

verse as; "Much in sorrow, oft in woe, Onward, Christians, onward go, Fight the fight, and worn with strife, Steep with tears the bread of life." You might think these suitable words for one who has just sat an examination! However it was the young girl who wrote the words; "Let your drooping hearts be glad; March in heavenly armour clad; Fight, nor think the battle long, Victory soon shall tune your heart." To be a Christian soldier you do not need to sit an examination or take an entry test but just live to the standard that Christ set us. To all who are taking examinations this Summer we wish you well and hope that your hearts will not droop too much. Information gleaned from "Great hymns and their stories" by W.J Limmer Sheppard

n ON THE BEAT

Local Police News with PC Finbar Simmons WE’VE had a number of reports of young people using cannabis in Frampton Cotterell and have recently arrested a teenager on suspicion of supplying the drug. I made the arrest after spotting the suspect while on patrol and finding them in possession of a number of small bags of cannabis. The youth panel will make a decision on how the teenager is dealt with.

We will tackle those who cause issues, but remember most teenagers just want to meet their friends. Parents and carers can help to keep their children safe and out of trouble by making sure they know where they are and who they’re with. Anti-social behaviour (ASB) covers a wide range of issues, including noisy neighbours, inconsiderate vehicle use, littering, damage and rowdy or drunken behaviour. Because of this we, South Gloucestershire Council and housing providers all have powers to deal with different aspects of it, and we work closely together in order to make sure we can all enjoy our community spaces and feel safe in our homes. We always need evidence to take action, so please report issues as they happen, with as much information about the person responsible as you can give. Although we might not always be able to attend immediately, we can build a picture of what’s happening, where and when, enabling us to target our response and bid for resources. You can download an incident diary and find more information on reporting ASB from www.avonandsomerset.police. uk or www.southglos.gov.uk

n MOTORING

A guide to pre-owned cars with Richard Cooke

Second hand Style A look at everyday cars on the cusp of becoming modern classics Audi S6 Avant, 2006 - 2011: The school-run Lambo THE red-hot SUV sector has a lot going for it: Practicality, flexibility, space and arguably safety from four wheel drive systems. These cars have been selling like crazy for years, but I do take pause to wonder why. Because all of these attributes can be found in a traditional estate car, but last time I checked there aren’t any SUVs that also come with a V10 Lamborghini engine. The 2006 Audi S6 Avant did though – a 5.2 litre 430bhp beast of a motor in an otherwise sensible 4x4 estate from equally sensible Audi. And all this for £13k on the used market? What’s stopping you? Firstly hats off to Audi for letting their engineers run amok with the S6, raiding sister company Lamborghini’s garage and shoe-horning that V10 under the bonnet. No one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no one expects such a conventionallooking estate to have this much explosive power. And what power – always there when you need it at any point, no matter how low the revs. I am told by the owner that it pulls harder well above the legal limit (on a German Autobahn, of course) than it does from a standstill. And I can believe him – this is a heavy car at nearly 2 tons, and it takes some shove to get it moving, but move it does – 0-60mph takes about 5 seconds

and 0-100mph no more than 13. That is staggeringly fast for something that can easily swallow a grandfather clock, and the fact that it likes to cruise in triple figures comes as no surprise. My test model has 88k miles on the clock, and comes in rather lovely limited edition S6 blue. It returns 22mpg in mixed driving and will rock on its suspension if you blip the throttle at traffic lights, just like a muscle car. The rather lazy 5 speed autobox reminds me of a yank tank as well, but you learn to use it gently given the huge reserves of torque. I get the feeling that this is the last of a breed – Audi now fit a V6 in the current S6. Heck, even the RS6 has to make do with a V8 these days – downsizing is here to stay, be in no doubt. And that makes the

S6 an odd but brilliantly eccentric car, a rare example of a modern manufacturer going out on a limb and doing something really unusual. Do note that Audi’s reliability record isn’t as good as they might lead you to believe. Boot seals can leak, and the struts themselves are weak. The S6 also needs to be driven hard; leave it for a week and any number of the multiple ECUs may rebel and throw up error warning lights. The engine has a habit of clogging itself up with carbon deposits if you don’t thrash it every now and then. Which, let’s face it, you will. Junction 18A onto the M4: Another step forward

Luke Hall MP writes for Frome Valley Voice

JUNCTION 18A, the proposed new link between vital and A4174 ring road, with the M4, has taken another step forward this month, as South Gloucestershire Council took the formal decision to recommend that the new junction should be placed at Emersons Green, not at Pucklechurch, moving the project onto the next stage. Junction 18A onto the M4 would provide relief to existing and future congestion on the ring road, and discourage heavy goods traffic from using routes through the small, eastern villages in South Gloucestershire, as they make their way from the A46 to access eastern Bristol. A report by the University of Bath has also highlighted the key economic benefits of a new M4 link which will provide easier access residents onto the M4 and accommodate the growth that is planned for South Gloucestershire.

WE’RE ONLINE TOO!

It will also address the increasing commercial demands being placed on Yate, Emersons Green Westerleigh, Pucklechurch and the rest of South Gloucestershire. I am so grateful to the thousands of local residents who signed the petition calling for the new junction 18A, which helped us as the three South Gloucestershire MPs secure £500,000 from the Chancellor to get junction 18A moving again. This level of local support has helped me raise junction 18A in the House of Commons, bring Cabinet Ministers down to the site and to show them how important it will be for the area. I was also delighted to hand a letter, signed by over 100 local businesses, calling for the junction to the Transport Minister. All of this local support has helped get us to this stage, where we can

look at reliving the long term congestion we experience in South Gloucestershire. As we move forward, we now have to get Highways England to look over the proposed location and sign it off too, but I have already met with them to explain that as the local MP, I would only be able to support the Emersons Green option, and completely oppose any suggestion of it being built at Pucklechurch. As both a local man who was born here and has lived here all of my life, I will do all I can to help deliver the best for our community, and this includes pushing for bigger improvements to our roads as well as smaller local schemes. If you have any thoughts on junction 18A, or any other matter, I would be delighted to hear from you; luke. hall.mp@parliament.uk

Let’s talk about Fungal Toe Nails

Mandolin musicians set to entertain return concert

FUNGAL toenails - such an easy thing to get and a real challenge to get rid of. It is a very common condition and thankfully, most of the time, it is cosmetic and does not cause any pain or other problems. However, left untreated, nails can become thickened, misshapen, ingrown and painful. The infection could also damage your nail plate. Nails can become unsightly and this can affect a person’s self-esteem and choice of footwear. We all have fungi that live on our bodies and in our environment. Toe nail fungus is caused by picking up an infection in the nail. Fungal toe nails can start after injury, illness or stress. It is more common in the elderly, diabetic patients and those with poor circulation. The infection causes nails to discolour, thicken or crumble, making them hard to manage without professional help. It can affect all or some of your nails. It can be slow growing or it can spread very quickly. There are a number of pathogenic fungi that can cause disease in humans and it does depend on the fungi and your nails, as to how the infection develops. Luckily, there are options available to treat this condition, starting with a strict foot care regime. Wash feet thoroughly in a mild soap and dry feet gently, especially between the toes. Wear clean socks made from a natural material such as cotton or bamboo

by Moira de Groot, Foot Health Practitioner, Willow Brook Clinic and change them daily. Let your shoes dry out between wearing them, alternating with another pair of shoes every day. Wear well-fitting shoes. If you can, go barefoot and let the sunshine and air get to your feet. Treat other fungal infections such as Athlete’s Foot. A trained professional can manage infected nails by reducing the thickness of the nails and keeping your nails short. There are medicated options available which you can discuss with your foot health practitioner or podiatrist. If you have any queries or concerns about your feet or nails, contact a foot health practitioner or podiatrist for the correct advice.

n NEWS FROM STROUD AUCTION ROOMS TIME was of the essence at Stroud Auction Rooms' March sale when Stuart Maule's specialist watch section swept the board. Fifteen of the 25 highest selling lots were in this category, with top place scooped by a Rolex OysterPerpetual GMT-Master gentleman's wristwatch, which sold for £16,000. There was a lot of competition for the best timepieces with an Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph wristwatch making £7,000; a Lemania British Royal Navy nuclear submarine chronograph wristwatch (£6,300) and a Blancpain Villeret 18ct gold triple calendar automatic with moonphase (£4,000). Jewellery held its own with a platinum art deco ring set with a round brilliant diamond and two baguette cut diamonds going under the hammer for £4,400. Other exceptional pieces included a Belle Epoque diamond set necklace/brooch in foliate and floral design (£3,350) and a pair of Victorian earrings set with natural, untreated cut rubies surrounded by old cut diamonds (£1,800). An early 19thC gold snuff box with blue enamel decoration attracted great attention,

Blancpain Gold Watch sold for £4000 eventually selling for £2,750, while an Oliver Cromwell 1658 Commonwealth shilling in near very fine condition, sold for £1,400. But the success was not all about the high fliers. Auctioneer Nick Bowkett was particularly pleased with a Bergman horse, sold on behalf of EmmausCharity, that made a respectable £850. Items sold on behalf of the charity totalled £1,900 this month. With Stroud Auctions selling commission-free for organisations with charitable status, an increasing number of churches and high street charity shops are bringing items into the sale room in the bid for better profits. The next sale at Stroud Auctions is on April 11 and 12 (10am) when specialist sections will include books, ephemera, stamps, pictures, motoring and transport and Asian Art. Viewing is on Tuesday, April 10 (10am-7pm) and from 9am on sale days.

Based in the Riverside extension to Yate Shopping Centre, the restaurant only opened a little more than two years ago in November 2015. Under a company voluntary arrangement - CVA - Prezzo submitted a restructuring plan to its creditors and was due to seek their approval of the CVA at a meeting on March 23 as Yate and Sodbury Voice went to press. Pucklechurch looking to extend lead at top of the table HEADING into the last few matches of the season Pucklechurch were looking to advance their lead at the top of the table when they faced WUE at home. A fast paced game with some great play saw them secure a point with a 0-0 draw. The next match against Bristol and West was technically an away game, but it was played at Winterbourne Academy. The first half was poor and Pucklechurch were 2-0 down, but a determined fightback in the second period saw them secure a 2-2 draw. Despite the lack of a win for Pucklechurch, other results meant the team became champions of Berkeley Division 2. The season, though, wasn’t over. Avonmouth were the next visitors to Winterbourne Academy. A strong team performance and stand out performances from the team youngsters ensured a 6-2 win for Pucklechurch. Pucklechurch now have one rearranged game to play in mid April before officially celebrating their champion status.

Coalpit Heath to start season with local derby A PRE-season friendly against Hambrook will kick start the season for Coalpit Heath Cricket Club. The match, on Saturday 21 April is at the club’s home ground on Serridge Lane. Indoor training continues on Sunday between 5pm and 6pm at Yate International Academy. The youth teams are also busy preparing for the new season, with the under 9 and under 11 teams training on Tuesday evenings between 6pm and 7pm, and the under 13 and under 15 sides training on Wednesday evenings between 6pm and 7pm. Both sessions are held at Yate International Academy. The club also has a growing number of girl cricketers, and a dedicated ladies coach in Michelle Clark. The club will be running their second year of Allstars cricket between May and June with registration now open for 8 sessions on Friday nights.

Cricketers look to first matches as winter nets finish FRAMPTON Cotterell Cricket Club is preparing to brave the elements with the first friendly matches of the 2018 season after

concluding their winter nets. The first matches are away fixtures, with the club anxious to put a poor 2017 season behind them. The club are playing at Bradley Stoke and Bristol YMCA on 21 April with another fixture at Patchway a week later. Before then the club will be concentrating on getting their two pitches ready for action. The old adage says ‘An hour in March is worth two in April’ is one that groundwork veterans know well, and they will be hoping the recent wintry weather doesn’t hamper their preparations for the season. The club will also be bolstered by the news of money from South Gloucestershire to improve the outfield as part of a general improvement of the Park’s playing surfaces. Frampton’s clubhouse has also been renovated over the winter. The club is still recruiting children to its All-Stars cricket camp. Children aged 5-8 are being offered the chance to learn

Frampton U14s edged out in thriller Chepstow U14 19-5 Frampton Cotterell U14 WITH no sign of the bad weather, which had seen several games cancelled, Frampton’s youngsters finally got a run out. An even start saw both teams sounding each other out but it was the home side who took the lead when following a scrum. Chepstow broke clear and some good passing down the line saw them break the Frampton defence for the opening score. Frampton fought back immediately and were unlucky not to get back on level terms when a good passing move of their own saw Mike pushed out a metre from the line. More pressure saw Frampton threaten and after a scrum won by Matt, playing a hooker, the ball fell to Jamie and his jinking run put him deep inside the Chepstow half before finding

Lewis who was held up just short of the line. The visitors were soon on level terms. Another scrum found Corey whose pass back inside found Lewis who in turn passed to Jamie to dive over. As the half drew to a close Chepstow were awarded a scrum five metres out, the ball was shipped to the blind side and with only the one man to beat the winger crossed the line for the try. With the conversion scored it was 12-5 to Chepstow. At the start of the second half Chepstow again worked wide and a neat side step by the attacking player saw him cut inside to increase the lead to 19-5. Frampton were defending well and some great work by Sam, Luke, Marcus, Alfie and Ollie kept the home side at bay with no additional score to give the home side the win.

Rugby tour raises money for charity £762 has been raised for the Prince’s Trust after Frampton Cotterell Rugby Club’s annual tour. The club took 50 players on the trip to St Austell in Cornwall. This year’s theme was ‘a wedding', with fancy dress the order of the day, and what you wore decided by what was drawn from a hat. This year’s charity was chosen by club captain Mike Ashwin, who is cycling from Lands End to John O Groats

to raise money for The Princes Trust . This total is part of around £3000 that has been raised on tour in recent years. There was even some rugby on the tour, with Frampton beating St Austell 19-5 with tries from Rhys Thomson , Rhys Jennings and a sublime Tim Mason.
