Green light for Coalpit Heath post office move
Tired legs, happy people
POST Office bosses have given the OK for the Nisa Store in Coalpit Heath to house the village post office, with a massive increase in opening times as a bonus. Customers had been concerned when the former post office in Church Lane closed in March after the postmaster resigned and the building was sold. For many, it meant travelling further to find alternative postal services. But Nisa shop proprietor Edwina Pennell offered to take on the business and after a period of consultation, she has now been told the move can go ahead. As her store in Woodend Road also has longer opening hours, it means people will be able to get postal services more easily. A total of 60 hours extra will be offered, including on Sundays. Now users just have to wait for a formal announcement of the date of the switch.

Thumbs up for new Coalpit Heath post office – and 60 more opening hours APPROVAL has been given for a new post office in the Nisa store in Coalpit Heath, with longer hours pledged for customers. The business is moving after the Church Lane building that housed the village’s previous post office and a general store was sold.
P
ostmaster Steve Davis resigned, bringing to an end many years of providing a service to the locality with his wife, Sarah. Edwina Pennell, who runs the Nisa shop in Woodend Road, offered to take on the business and after a consultation exercise, Post Office Ltd has now agreed to the switch. The date for the formal
opening is yet to be announced but users hope it will not be too long, having already been without a local service for more than two months. The new branch will offer the same range of services as previously available but during significantly longer hours, including being open on Sundays. In all, customers will have 60 more hours a week in
which to make use of the postal services provided. Julia Marwood, regional network manager for Post Office Ltd, said: “We understand how important having a post office is to residents in Coalpit Heath and we are confident this new, modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.” The Nisa store is just 176 metres from the previous post office and in response to comments made during the consultation period, some internal changes were agreed to make the best of the space available and ensure enough room for post office users and
3
shop customers. Access, via a wide automatic door, will be level and designed to make it easy for people in wheelchairs to get in and out. Post Office Ltd said: “During consultation, we received a number of comments from customers and local representatives, mainly supportive of the proposal as the new location was said to be convenient, easy to access and the proposed premises would offer more space and longer opening times.” It is proposed that the post office will be open from 6.30am-11pm from Monday to Saturday and from 8am-10pm on Sundays.

Fall in rural crime School takes to the hustings levels welcomed as election fever takes hold Pupils from Frampton C of E by police School have been holding their LEVELS of rural crime have fallen by 16 per cent, figures from Avon and Somerset Police have shown. The number of such offences recorded from February to April 2015 reached 187 compared to 223 in the same period last year. Since February 2014, the force has used a different method of assessing the impact of rural crime by recording the number of offences against businesses or properties which relied on the land for a living. From that time it targeted such crime through the Horse Watch and Farm Watch schemes, running operations against burglaries and by training more officers and PCSOs - police community support officers in countryside crimes such as poaching. Across all the rural beats within Avon and Somerset during those same periods, there was a 5.4 per cent fall in overall recorded crime, dropping from 6,663 to 6,301.

own elections to tie in with the general election, with the prize of running the school for a day. The whole of Year 5 was involved in the school election, with nine different parties in the running. The campaign consisted of writing policies for education, health and justice. Each party had to make a campaign poster and give a campaign speech to each class. In the tradition of the Westminster elections, the pupils held a hustings where each class put a question the candidates. The election took place with a secret ballot on the same morning as the general election and Frampton Team Sport were announced the victors. They will run the school for an afternoon, putting their policies into practice. Rosie Brydon, the headteacher, said it was a very successful exercise; “It taught the children about the process of democracy in this country and gave them a greater
understanding of the national election”. “The children were very enthusiastic. One child told me it was the best topic she had ever done in school! I’m really looking forward to seeing how the winning party put their policies into practice”.

Residents say phone masts are ruining TV reception Residents in Coalpit Heath are protesting at the loss of Freeview TV reception following the installation of new 4G mobile phone masts near their home. Their concerns have been taken up by Westerleigh councillor Claire Young and by former MP Steve Webb, who have joined forces to call for better protection for residents when new masts are installed. As part of the roll-out of ‘4G’ mobile phone services, existing masts are being replaced across the area. But a sideeffect of the new masts can be interference with the Freeview signals received by households living near to the mast. Now a new 4G mast has been put up on the Badminton Road in Coalpit Heath, and neighbouring residents are suffering from poor TV reception. One Coalpit Heath resident, Mrs Joanne Cooke (pictured) said: “It is outrageous that they
can simply put up a new mast and disrupt our TV reception and leave us with the hassle of sorting it out”. Residents contacted Steve Webb who has taken up their concerns with an organisation called ‘at800’ which was set up to deal with the consequences of the 4G upgrade. “I am not impressed by the way this is being handled. Local residents are the entirely innocent victims when they suddenly face interference with their TV reception. Several have had to spend their own money getting this sorted out or have had to wait in for repeat visits from engineers”. Find us on Facebook www.facebook.com Search for fromevalleyvoice

Local teenagers conquer Ten Tors
7
The Ten Tors challenge rightly holds a fearsome reputation for young people preparing to tackle the tough terrain of deepest Dartmoor. A weekend of walking in often wild weather with little sleep can be a tough call. But a group of teenagers from the area has triumphed in this year’s event, as helper (and proud mum) Helen Jackson tells us. The weekend of Friday 8 to Sunday 10 May 2015 was certainly a weekend to remember forever for six Explorer Scouts from the Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorer Scout Unit, based in Frampton Cotterell, as they completed the annual Ten Tors challenge in record time. The Army organises the challenge, designed to test the navigation skills, team work and stamina of 14 to 19 year olds, from Okehampton Camp on the edge of Dartmoor. Up to 2,400 teenagers in teams of six tackle distances of 35, 45 or 55 miles, depending on age, visiting 10 of Dartmoor’s Tors in a set order on one of 26 possible routes, before hopefully reaching the finish line before the gate closes at 5pm on Sunday. For the six team members of the Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorers - Patrick Goddard (Captain), Izzy Hawker, Louis Jackson, Gareth Jones, Tom Howell and Joshua Ovens the challenge began back in November last year, when training started with practice hikes in the snow, first aid courses and learning navigation skills to ensure the team would have the necessary skills to survive the harsh environment of Dartmoor, whilst carrying all their equipment and supplies required for up to 48 hours on the moor. The weekend itself started
early on Friday morning after taking the day away from the Ridings International Academy. The team arrived late morning at a breezy Okehampton camp ready for their stringent kit check, health and safety briefing, route planning and overnight stay under canvas, before the challenge started at 7am on Saturday. Saturday morning dawned and the teams were woken to the Army’s wake-up call of Gangnam Style by Psy being played over the PA system at 5am. The sun shone during the final preparations but the weather soon turned to get the team properly wet before they started! With bacon rolls in their bellies and carrying all their kit for up to 48 hours on the moor the team left the camp for the start line. By 7am over 2,000 teenagers in teams of six were gathered at the start point along with hundreds of spectators on the edge of Dartmoor. Two Sea King helicopters swooped in, bringing the cannon crews, who jumped out down a rope! A countdown from 10, the cannons were fired, and the teams were off on the 2015 challenge. The weather improved throughout the day, giving a glorious afternoon and evening. The Zeus Explorers reached Tor six by the end of day one, on target for their overnight camp and completion by the 5pm

deadline on Sunday. After another very early start on the Sunday morning, the team made good progress and used their training and determination to arrive at the finish line at 12.17pm, beating the previous Zeus record by over an hour. In Ten Tors tradition, the team finished in fancy dress – Bristol Rovers jester hats – proudly carrying the Zeus Explorers’ flag through a guard of honour formed by other scout groups at the event. After a well deserved pasty, the team members were presented with their individual medals and team certificate in front of a wall of cameras. Cotswold Edge Zeus Explorer Scouts were the 3rd team to finish out of 17 on the same route
– a fantastic achievement for a fantastic team! Explorer Scout Leader, Chris Harris, said this was an outstanding achievement, with the team finishing 3rd on their designated route, “highlighting the tremendous hard work and effort the team had put into their training and preparation for the event” Congratulations to all those involved. Zeus Explorer Scout Unit is open to everyone aged 14 to 18. They meet at Mafeking Hall in Coalpit Heath on Tuesdays 7.30 to 9pm, for activities including camps and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Get ahead with a hat at library garden’s opening day
Re-visit by Ofsted leads to nursery being rated as outstanding
A NEW garden behind Winterbourne library is about to be formally opened, with a mad hatter’s parade adding to the fun. The garden has been created to offer more space for storytelling, children’s play and outdoor craftwork. At quiet times, users can also enjoy reading there or accessing the library’s free wi-fi service. The opening will start at 11am on Saturday, June 27, at the library in Flaxpits Lane and conclude with the procession of headgear at 2.30pm.
SILVERHILL Day Nursery in Winterbourne has been assessed as outstanding after a reinspection by Ofsted. A complaint was raised about a report produced after an earlier visit to the nursery last autumn, with the education organisation upholding the concerns and agreeing to a second inspection. Ofsted admitted there had been “some weaknesses” in the earlier inspection and removed the initial report from its website. Now the nursery and baby unit, located in several buildings on the site of Silverhill School, has achieved the highest grading from the watchdog. Inspector Sarah Haylett praised the secure relationships between staff and the children in their care, effective leadership and highly motivated staff. Partnerships with parents

were “extremely well developed” and a well qualified and experienced team of staff provided an “excellent range of activities and experiences” both indoors and outdoors. Ms Haylett said: “Outstanding teaching means children are enthusiastic and confident learners. “Those with additional needs and those who speak English as an additional language flourish because of the individual support and attention they receive.” Headmistress Jenifer Capper
said: “We are delighted with the outcome of the re-inspection. “We have been awarded outstanding in all categories and the report pays full tribute to the outstanding practice of all our practitioners. “We are grateful to Ofsted for taking our comments seriously and acting upon our request to remove the inspection report of October and give us a new inspection. We would also like to thank all our parents who have been so supportive during this time.”

All moved for Michael - including the garden shed A LANDMARK was reached when Michael Brimble moved to Chipping Sodbury from Iron Acton as part of a major housing improvement scheme. Mr Brimble, 76, became the 50th resident of Merlin Housing Society to move house during the scheme that will eventually see the redevelopment of 450 homes by the Chipping Sodbury-based association. They are being replaced with up to 750 modern, energy efficient premises - but only once the people living in the old ones have a new roof over their heads. Mr Brimble had lived in one of four Merlin bungalows in Nibley Lane for nearly ten years, was settled in the village and took great pride in his garden. But as the bungalows were in a poor condition, they were highlighted for redevelopment. Mr Brimble admitted he was anxious when he was first told about the move but project housing officer Sarah Durbin found a bungalow in Chipping Sodbury for him.
Mr Brimble said: “When I walked in the door it was like a mirror image of my old bungalow, except 30 years younger. “I really liked it and Sarah told me not to worry about anything, saying they’d even move my shed - and sure enough they did. “I had been very happy in my old home so when Merlin wanted to re-house me, it was a shock. I’d dreaded having to live on the third floor of a block of flats. “But I went back to my old property the day after I moved and I couldn’t believe it. As soon as I walked in the front door I
was hit by this strong, damp, musty smell. “I had just accepted the damp as one of those things but after one day away, I realised how bad it had been. It’s been a really good move for me and I am very satisfied with my new home.” Sarah said: “Moving a customer does require a lot

of organisation and working together across different parts of the business to ensure all their needs are met.” Merlin recently won planning permission for the redevelopment of the Iron Acton properties. Meanwhile building work on its first site in Coalpit Heath is due to start in June.

Four-year delay fears for NHS beds at Frenchay Hospital site
fromevalleyvoice
CAMPAIGNERS pressing for a community hospital at Frenchay fear there could be a four-year delay before any replacement NHS beds are provided on the site. They want health secretary Jeremy Hunt to intervene urgently and force local health bosses to work together to provide adequate hospital services for South Gloucestershire people. Barbara Harris, of the Save Frenchay Community Hospital group, said there was at least as much need for the facility now as when it was first proposed in 2005. The closure of Frenchay’s acute hospital last year and the switch of services to the new Southmead
Hospital was based on having a 68-bed community hospital at Frenchay by 2016. Since 2012, South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been investigating alternative ways of looking after at-risk patients. It is considering a health and social care centre run by an external provider on the 6.8 acre site instead of the twice-approved community hospital. No formal decision has yet

been made and campaigners insist that a community hospital, with outpatient and diagnostic clinics, as well as beds for patients recovering from illness, injury or surgery, is what’s needed. They want South Gloucestershire’s public health and health scrutiny commission at its meeting on June 10 to refer the matter back to Mr Hunt, who was told by an independent panel 15 months ago that there had already been too many delays. Mrs Harris said the reduction in acute beds at Southmead after Frenchay’s closure and the lack of intermediate care beds was continuing to cause problems, including delayed discharges and cancelled operations. Patients needing rehabilitation are currently treated in Elgar House at Southmead but that is due for demolition in 2016 to make way for a car park and campaigners claim the local NHS’ own figures indicate that rehab beds at Frenchay may not be provided until 2020.
11
Mrs Harris said: “The Save Frenchay Community Hospital Group has tirelessly fought for sufficient and appropriate healthcare provision in South Gloucestershire for ten years. “We have witnessed the removal and destruction of so much healthcare infrastructure in South Gloucestershire and we will continue to make patients and the public aware of what is really happening.” Dr Stephen Illingworth, of South Gloucestershire CCG, said plans for rehabilitation, reablement and recovery services had been formally agreed in 2014 and in March 2015, the CCG had decided to go ahead with seeking providers for services at Frenchay. He said: “The service at Elgar House is being provided as an interim arrangement until the alternative plans for Frenchay have been developed. There is currently no requirement for Elgar to be vacated in 2016.”

Daughter inspires fund raising to help blind and visually impaired youngsters A WINTERBOURNE Down mum has raised more than £7,000 to help blind and visually impaired children with their learning. Kristy Hooper’s daughter Lily-Grace was born prematurely in 2008 and at just a few days old suffered a brain injury caused by a bleed. Before reaching her first birthday she was registered as severely sight impaired. But Lily-Grace attends Hambrook Primary School and having started to learn Braille, her mum entered and won a competition to win a piece of equipment called a Smart Brailler. The machine’s features include a computer screen, larger keys and audio feedback and gives users the ability to edit, save and transfer electronic documents. Although delighted to be able to help her daughter so much, Kristy was upset that the other families who entered the contest
had missed out. So she started a fundraising challenge to buy machines for other children and swiftly reached her first target through ProjectBrailler. Kristy said: “Lily-Grace loves school and is eager to learn. She is confident, bright, articulate
and smiles all the time. “Now I have completed my first task, I am still continuing to raise money and awareness of these awesome visually impaired kids, with the aim of providing them and their parents with Smart Braillers and home support to use them.”

Cash boost for charities from outgoing council chairman AN estimated £13,000 for charity will have been raised by outgoing South Gloucestershire Council chairman Howard Gawler during his year-long term of office. Mr Gawler, who did not stand for re-election to the Ladden Brook ward in the recent elections, marked the end of his special year by presenting cheques to those organisations he had supported while chairman. Ella Mayne received more than £3,500 for the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC), while £1,800 went to Maggie Maclean for the Hosanna Primary School Support Group based in Yate, which helps children at a school in Kampala, Uganda. Further money is set to go to the charities as more cash has come in since the cheques were written and Mr Gawler, of Iron Acton, also said he would personally double the

amount raised. One of the highlights of his fundraising was completing a 10,000ft skydive. Speaking at the council’s annual general meeting, he thanked everyone who donated to his chosen charities. * The new council chairwoman for 201516 is Erica Williams, with Kathy Morris elected as vice-chairwoman.

Gary gets ahead with gold medal festival success FRAMPTON Cotterell’s hat making industry helped win a gold medal for garden designer Gary Bristow at the prestigious Malvern Spring Festival. But he just missed out on a People’s Choice accolade, where visitors to the Royal Horticultural Society show voted for their favourite gardens. Gary’s Mad as a Hatter creation was instead named runner-up in the category for festival gardens. The section gave novice gardeners the chance to produce
a smaller scale garden compared to the big show gardens. Gary was inspired by the hat industry and his planting included references not only to hat production but also the occupational hazards faced by workers. Some workers suffered neurological damage due to being exposed to mercury used in the manufacturing process. Gary said: “Huge thanks to everyone who supported the garden.”

Candles of hope to shine in loving tribute at Yate Relay for Life A MARATHON walking relay in Yate is set to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK. Relay for Life will also give those affected by cancer the chance to light a candle in memory of friends and relatives who have died of the disease. Yate has been involved in the 24-hour fund raising event since 2006 and so far has collected more than £250,000. Last year’s event alone brought in more than £37,000 and organisers hope to do even better when the 2015 relay takes place at Yate Outdoor Sports Complex on Saturday, July 4, and Sunday, July 5. Teams of walkers of all ages and level of fitness can get involved, with groups of up to 15 people able to sign up for the challenge. Participants are asked to raise as much money as possible ahead of the relay by organising events such as quiz nights and supermarket bag-packing sessions, as well as getting donations and sponsorship. At the relay, team members will take it in turns to walk around the athletics track while a programme of activities keeps others entertained when they are not resting, eating or sleeping in tents. The event is due to start at noon on the Saturday and as dusk falls that evening, a Candle of Hope ceremony will see candles placed around the track with messages remembering people who have died of cancer. Helene Craddock, chairwoman of the organising
committee, said: “Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer. Taking part in Yate Relay for Life is a positive way to be part of the local community and help make a real difference in the fight against the disease. “The Candle of Hope ceremony is incredibly moving and highlights the real reason everyone joins together for the event.” Helene is a cancer survivor and said she would light a candle to remember her grandmother, who died of the condition. Similar relays are held in 20 countries, with the original established in the USA to support
American cancer research. In Britain, work funded by Cancer Research UK has helped survival rates double in the past 40 years. More details about the Yate relay are available on the website yaterelayforlife.org.uk

Revellers get into the mood at last year’s Big Lunch
BIG plans for this year’s Big Lunch. Thousands of people are expected to pack a picnic for an annual community get together in Chipping Sodbury. The event takes place in Broad Street on Sunday, June 7, where visitors will be treated to an afternoon of free entertainment. The Big Lunch, part of a national initiative to get neighbours together on the first Sunday of every June, will take on the theme of a traditional British Victory Day street party. “We want the people of Chipping Sodbury to dig out their Union Jack bunting and join us for what has become a highlight in the town’s busy calendar of fantastic community events,” said Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch chairman Alexandra Womack. “Last year our 1940s vintage theme proved extremely popular and we are echoing that with a Victory in Europe Day-style street party for 2015, tying in with the 70th anniversary of VE Day”. “We hope to honour those

Bristol Samba Band will again return for a show-stopping display and locally-based groups Razzamataz, Yate Star Twirlers and Stapleton School of Dance are among those to perform on a haycart stage. Chipping Sodbury Rugby Club will hold a children’s ‘havea-go’ stall and Yate and Chipping Sodbury ATC will host a free simulated training experience. Youngsters will be invited to take part in a red, white and blue fancy dress competition and a Chipping Sodburythemed photography contest, for under 11s, will be judged on the day by local photographer Rich McDonough.

Action pledged at academy after inspection leads to lower rating STEPS are being taken to upgrade Winterbourne International Academy after it took a drop in the Ofsted rankings. A visit by the education watchdog resulted in the school losing its “good” rating and being told it now required improvement. The inspection was carried out just a week after the academy’s recently appointed chief executive principal, Beverley Martin, took up her post. Lead inspector Sheila Crew acknowledged that a senior leadership re-organisation in the past year, coupled with changes at executive principal level, had led to new roles and responsibilities for academy leaders, who had not had time to fully put them into effect. She also recognised that Ms Martin had already taken action to address various issues and praised significant improvements to the sixth form, which could now be assessed as good. However, she said the four key areas of leadership and management; behaviour and safety of pupils; achievement of pupils and quality of teaching all had to improve. Ofsted ranks schools at one of four levels, with Winterbourne falling from the second best standard to the third-rated category. The inspectors said students did not consistently achieve the high standards of which they were capable and teachers’ expectations of them were not high enough in many subjects. Boys didn’t do as well as girls at GCSE level, there was inconsistent marking and no regular pattern to homework. Disadvantaged pupils had also not made enough progress to close the gap with other students, especially in English and maths. But Ms Crew said students were happy, their behaviour was good overall and there was some outstanding teaching in sociology, maths, drama, photography and art. Attendance for most groups of pupils was higher than the national average and students with disabilities or special

educational needs received good support. She said: “The newly appointed chief executive principal is committed to achieving the highest standards. She has taken swift action to improve leadership.” Ms Martin said: “The results of the inspection are disappointing but the trust was aware of the areas for action and had acted at the beginning of this year, appointing a new leadership team across the federation. “Students at Winterbourne traditionally gain strong grades at GCSE but we and Ofsted believe that our students can make greater progress and that is what we are now seeking. “We were pleased that the improvements in the sixth form were recognised but remain focused on moving our sixth form provision to outstanding. “The new principal, Richard Haupt, will be addressing all aspects of the academy life. “We understand the challenge we have ahead of us but intend to be an outstanding federation in the very near future, where all our schools offer the very best education for all our students.”

WaterAid support group celebrates after making a splash for 30 years
Ellie brings her buddies to the bus she named The competition to name the play bus at the Viaduct Nurseries & coffee shop has been won by Ellie Bisp from Frampton Cotterell. Ellie, her brother, parents, grandparents and 10 of her friends were invited to a party on the bus in Coalpit Heath to
celebrate the winning name of Buddy, where they enjoyed play, lunch and a personalised cake. Following a long play on Buddy, Ellie and her friends fed the goats, donkeys, pigs and alpacas that live at Viaduct Nurseries.
THE first support group for the WaterAid charity is celebrating a landmark anniversary with a pledge to raise even more money. Frampton Cotterell and Coalpit Heath’s group was for 20 years the sole organisation helping to promote the charity’s work and fundraising to contribute towards its costs. Now it has reached its 30th anniversary, with plenty to celebrate but still determined to plan many more events to bring in cash and spread the WaterAid word. Retired teacher Pat Spry has been involved with the support group for all of its existence and has held the position of chairwoman for 20 years. She said: “There is much to celebrate and we are truly grateful for the wonderful continuing support we receive. “There is still a great deal more to achieve if we are to realise WaterAid’s vision of reaching ‘everyone, everywhere’
with safe water and sanitation by 2030. “Our group’s aim is to bring the total we have raised over the years to £150,000 by the end of our anniversary year. “If we do, we will have reached 10,000 people with these life saving benefits. We are so privileged to know that many people will be eager to help us reach our target. “For a very long time we were the only WaterAid support group but now there is a network of them.” To help mark the anniversary, a coffee morning will be held on Saturday, June 13, in The Beacon at Zion Church, Woodend Road, from 10am-noon. Other events during the year include a Summer Serenade with the Gasworks Choir in the Bridge House grounds, Rectory Road, on Saturday, July 4, ahead of more summer, autumn and Christmas activities.

Voters return new Tory MP and give the party council control CONSERVATIVES celebrated after winning the Thornbury and Yate parliamentary constituency and taking control of South Gloucestershire Council in the recent elections. Luke Hall secured a 1,495 majority over the Liberal Democrats’ Steve Webb to become the area’s MP, while at local level the Tories now hold 40 seats on the unitary authority. The general election result ended Mr Webb’s 18 years representing the constituency at Westminster. For the past five years he had also been the highly regarded pensions minister in the coalition government. At South Gloucestershire Council, his Lib Dem colleagues have 16 seats, while voters returned 14 Labour councillors. Meanwhile Filton and Bradley Stoke Conservative MP Jack Lopresti retained his seat with an increased majority.

All smiles for Sue after winning award for Frampton children’s activity centre THE owner of a children’s activity centre in Frampton Cotterell has won an award from a franchise business that named her its operator of the year. Sue Hammond has run the Creation Station since November 2011, starting with just a couple of sessions a week. Now she offers seven sessions weekly for babies, toddlers and pre-school children, with other activities for older children provided in the school holidays and on some Saturdays. Sue, mum to twin boys Bailey and McKenzie, was presented with her accolade at the Creation Station national conference in Birmingham. She said: “I’m so delighted to have won this award. Running a business while trying to be a good mum isn’t always easy. However, I love bringing exciting art activities to classes, birthday parties and events and find inspiring little people’s imaginations very rewarding.”

managing director of Creation Station, said: “I am very proud of all our network, so judging the awards is really tough. Each year our franchise owners are becoming more and more successful and the calibre is really high.”
HE next meeting of the Safer Stronger Community Group for the Frome Valley will be held in Coalpit Heath on Tuesday, June 30. Representatives of local councils and organisations will attend, together with the police and fire service. The Manor Hall in Henfield Road hosts the 7.30pm event, at which people can raise and discuss local problems and projects in Frampton Cotterell, Coalpit Heath, Iron Acton and Westerleigh.

Coalpit Heath WI
O
ur May meeting was held on Wednesday 7th May and was chaired by Catherine Proudlove. Again, we were lucky to have several visitors, one of which, Vicky Stock provided a lovely flower arrangement. The purpose of the meeting was to vote on our 2015 Resolution, this year the topic is “Failing to Care”. Catherine provided a summary of the Resolution and a discussion followed regarding the difference in personal and nursing care. We are lucky to have several healthcare and social services professionals, so the debate was well informed. Following the serious nature of the Resolution, Margaret Giess gave a light hearted talk on her life, both professional and social. Margaret, a lady of many talents told us about her life – her job in the motor racing industry, her family life and also her ability to tame vicars! An informal supper followed giving members and visitors chance to mingle. The competition this month was an arrangement of flowers in W.I colours (white, purple and green) and this was won by Pat Wakefield. Tracy Bell confirmed that the application for a gardening grant (in conjunction with Frampton Cotterell WI) had been successful. Tracy and Rosie Simpkins (Frampton Cotterell WI) joined children from Frampton Church of England primary school to sow the seeds in the wildflower seed beds at Crossbow Park and we were helped by Celia Zlobec (Floral Friends of Frampton). We are all keeping our fingers crossed that the flowers grow – we may need to give them some gentle weeding in June. It has been a lovely project that has
involved different groups in the community. Tracy also has another gardening project for the Coalpit Heath ladies, in the pipeline but has to wait for the go ahead from the Parish Council. Some of our ladies also attended a day out at Wincanton Races, where they enjoyed a three course lunch and afternoon tea. After the excitement of the first race, members took the betting very seriously and the associated race card was carefully studied before any bets were placed. Everyone enjoyed a win on at least one race. We have a few forthcoming events to look forward to, St Saviour’s Church fete, a wine and cheese evening and the midnight walk for St Peter’s Hospice.

feel free to come and see what our members have been baking. In April we were given a talk and demonstration by Melanie of Melanie’s Kitchen in Downend, who showed us how to make quick and easy canapés. We discussed the National Federation Resolution Discussion in May – this is an important WI calendar event as it gives all WI members an opportunity to vote for national concerns which may be important to them and to have a hand in taking real action to make changes at a national level. Potential new members are always welcome. We meet at St Peter’s Hall on School Road at 7.45pm, on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Visitors are charged at £2.50 and any new members join by paying the 2015 membership fee. We also have a number of special interest groups that meet separately including a book club, choir and our darts team. Please do look out for details for these and other meetings, social events etc. on our Facebook page – just search FramptonCottWI. and like our page.

ur President, Sally Lloyd welcomed everyone to our May Meeting. The general business was discussed and reports were given. Two of our members had attended the Federation Tea Dance at Somerset Hall, Portishead and enjoyed dancing to Peter Allen who sang and played his clarinet and trumpet. They also enjoyed an excellent cream tea! Our WI entered a team of four at the Group Quiz which was held in the Vassall’s Centre, Fishponds. There were ten teams and a good evening was enjoyed by all. At our Meeting we were asked our thoughts on the Federation

Resolution which was to call on the government to remove the distinction between nursing care (which is funded by the NHS) and personal care (which is funded by The Social Services) and put the two under the same umbrella. Our members thought the Resolution was too complex and not clear enough in its definition and that we had not been given enough information upon which to make a decision. We decided not to back the Resolution. Our guest Speaker was Alison Spurrell who was accompanied by a colleague who were part of the “Knutty Knitter” volunteers from St Peters Hospice in Brentry. Alison told us her story of how a group of people who had worked together in a local school and who all had left, wanted to keep in touch so they formed a knitting group and knitted characters of The Royal Wedding plus the corgis which were then sold and the proceeds given back to the school. After this they knitted characters from ‘The Last Supper and Nativity Sets’ plus Christmas articles which were sold and the proceeds given back to the school. Sadly one member of the Group was unwell and went into St Peters for care and died shortly after. Alison and her friends then decided to continue knitting and did life size figures of the Nativity scene. These were taken to various venues and events and were even on the television. Any donations given were passed back to The Hospice. After more publicity the Group knitted smaller characters and animals of the Nativity, snowmen, penguins, Father Christmas, scarves, t-cosies and Christmas knitted lights. Christmas cards were printed showing the various knitted items notably the knitted characters of the nativity with the Clifton Suspension Bridge in the background. All proceeds were given to St Peters. Alison told us about the care, help and support, music therapy, complimentary therapy, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, that the hospice gives to adult patients. There is a large group of volunteers who manage the switchboard, the coffee shop, drive patients to and from the day care unit, gardeners, flower ladies, dinner ladies and a large number who work in the charity shops. It was a very interesting and all inspiring talk. At our meeting on July 2nd our Speaker will be Christine Cole on “Builder of Dreams”. All are welcome to join us at 7.30pm. Don’t forget our Strawberry Tea and Plant Sale on Saturday 20 June which is our celebration of the 100 years of the WI. It’s on from 2.30 – 4.30 in Winterbourne Down Church Hall. Do come along.

his month instead we had a speaker from The Citizens Advice Bureau who was informative, interesting and gave a well presented talk . The bureau started the day after the second World War broke out in September 1939 and they used a converted horse box as a mobile office, touring round helping and giving advice. The Bureau nowadays has offices in most towns but quite often these are only open part time, so it is a good idea to check on their web site if you have the facility. Offices are currently staffed by both paid staff and part time volunteers. Members had made cakes for sale and these sold out very quickly, our members do like food and drink events! The competition for something silver was won my Maggie Cooper. A visit to Richard Cornocks Farm in Tytherington is our next outing and members are very much looking forward to this in June. Our annual outing is to Hestercombe House and Gardens in August The gardens are wonderful and the house has been restored and houses a contemporary art gallery, The next trip to be promoted is a visit to Wyke Cheese Farm in September, stopping for a fish and chip lunch on the way home. In June our speaker is Dorothy Cook who will be talking about midwifery. To compliment her talk, the competition will be a photograph of members as a baby or toddler. New members and visitors are always welcome, we meet on the second Thursday of each month at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Rooms.

South Glos Show gets the hump The organisers of the South Glos Show are bringing something different to this year’s event with some camel racing. There will be 12 races over the weekend, with four camels taking part in each race. People have the chance to be a camel owner for the day or buy a race sponsor package. All the money raised will go to the Great Western Air Ambulance charity. Show organiser, Darren Hawkins, said “we’re really excited about the camel racing, it should be a lot of fun, and add to an already great line up for the show. We’re hoping to make a lot of money for the air ambulance too.” Those interested in getting involved in the camel racing can contact the show via their website; www.southglosshow. co.uk The South Glos Show takes place next to the Westerleigh Road in Enfield on 1&2 August.

Golden time for Yate Shopping Centre as celebrations planned to mark anniversary CELEBRATIONS are being planned for a landmark anniversary at Yate Shopping Centre. A programme of events is being finalised to mark 50 years of trading at the complex, which was one of the first US-style shopping malls in the UK. It was opened in a blaze of publicity in 1965 by top radio comedian Ted Ray and Coronation Street favourite Pat Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner in the TV soap. Over the years it has seen a number of changes but probably none as significant as those of recent times. The new Tesco Extra and bus station are now well established, changes were made to East Walk and North Parade, while West

Walk altered significantly with the incorporation of Westgate Health Centre. Now the town is about to get its long awaited cinema within the new Yate Riverside leisure development, with potential improvement to the retail element next on the list. Crestbridge, which owns the shopping centre, is also looking at further improvements to the residential accommodation within the complex. Andy Lowry, the centre manager, said: “Crestbridge always promised to invest in Yate for the future and with these recent improvements, has now invested approximately £40 million since buying the centre ten years ago.” Mr Lowry said the
anniversary events on August 22 and 23 were both a celebration of 50 years of trading and of the success of the centre, which in an average year attracts more than 12 million visitors. The programme for that weekend includes a Music Through the Decades event on the Saturday, performed by tribute bands. The popular Wurzels will be the headline act for the Sunday, with support from local bands. Centre marketing manager, Tracy King, said: “This will be a real family occasion and traders are being encouraged to get into the swing of things. We will be announcing the full line-up of acts once they are finalised.”

Big pull to clear problem weed
VOLUNTEERS are needed to help clear an invasive weed in Yate. Himalayan balsam grows and spreads along stream and river banks, smothering native plants and causing flooding. But an event called the Big Pull, organised by South Gloucestershire Council, will help get rid of at least some of the troublesome plant by pulling it up. A similar event last year resulted in more than 100 volunteers helping to clear a 675-metre stretch of the River Frome. Anyone who wants to get involved should turn up for one or more of three Saturday sessions on June 6, July 25 or August 8. Each event runs from 10am-1pm, with volunteers asked to meet at the far end of Celestine Road. Free snacks and refreshments will be provided and helpers should wear weatherproof clothing and strong footwear. Equipment and guidance will be supplied.

Marathon musicals event to test vocal chords for 12 hours SONGS from favourite musicals will be belted out at St Peter’s Church, Frampton Cotterell, during a second marathon singing event. Last year community groups took part in a successful 30-hour hymnathon to raise money for the church and Frampton Cotterell Church of England Primary School. Now a shorter fundraiser has been organised, with vocal chords being tested for 12 hours. St Peter’s Sings the Musicals will start at 10am on Saturday, June 13, and continue into the evening to give as many people as possible the chance to be involved. Already the church’s choir and pupils from the school have signed up for the challenge. Tiny tots from Crossbow Pre-School, local netball players and students from Winterbourne International Academy have also enlisted, together with members of St Peter’s Players and the Crossbow Singers. Students from St Bede’s Catholic College in Lawrence
Weston, Bristol, will also return after taking part in the hymnathon. The Rev Malcolm Strange, priest in charge of St Peter’s, works as assistant principal at the college and the youngsters were keen to get involved once again. Helen Harding, a member of the friends group at Frampton Cotterell Primary, had come up with the original idea for a singing event. She said: “As well as the fantastic programme of singing, there will be tower tours, a café, lunches and a bar and barbecue from 6pm. “We hope many people will join the choirs and community organisations who are singing from a range of musicals.” Those going along to sing, listen and lend their support will be treated to tunes from musicals such as The Sound of Music, Les Miserables and Mamma Mia! Disney-inspired songs will also feature during the day, together with the Wizard of Oz and Oliver!

Cyclists sought for 500-mile charity challenge A CHARITY in Bristol is looking for cyclists to join its 500-mile bike ride from Bristol to France to help raise funds. The annual Bristol to Bordeaux challenge sees a team of 60 riders from across the UK, cycle over a period of four days. The aim is to raise more than £50,000 for PROPS, which provides opportunities and support for those with special needs. The Bristol-based organisation survives by generating its own funds through sporting events such as the bike ride and via social enterprises like sign making, printing and farm based activity. Organisers are looking to fill the remaining places in the ride, which leaves Bristol Temple Quay on July 1 and finishes
at the Girondins Fountain in Quinconces square, Bordeaux, on July 4. Riders can choose between a 300 mile ‘Classic’ ride (roughly 80-miles per day) and a 500 mile ‘Extreme’ (125-miles per day) version. For further information and to sign up to the ride, visit www. bristol2bordeaux.org or contact PROPS on 0117 9653514.

We’re also looking forward to the launch of a number of exciting new and facelifted models from Ford, particularly the much-anticipated New Mustang, which is the first time this vehicle will be sold as a right hand drive model in the UK. This follows the launch of the New Ford Focus and the All-New Ford Mondeo earlier this year, which will be followed by the New Ford S-MAX and New Ford C-MAX later this year, so there’s a lot to talk to our customers about. Arthritis. Does it need to stop you being active? By Craig de Groot from the Willow Brook Clinic
A
s a Chiropractor, I often get asked by patients suffering from either acute joint pain or chronic joint pain which is getting worse, ‘Have I got arthritis?’ Most often, and especially for ‘not so young’ patients the answer is yes, but I swiftly follow my reply with a more detailed explanation. There are over 300 bones in our bodies, most of which join with other bones to form joints. These joints allow our skeletons to move. Our joints are prone to wear and tear and deterioration over the years, because they move on each other many times a day. Arthritis means swelling or inflammation of these joints as they support our bodies doing daily activity. There are many different types of arthritis. The most common type is osteoarthritis, which
affects the joints as described. It is a condition which we will probably all suffer with from time to time at some stage of our lives. The symptoms include joint and muscle pain and restricted movement.
Do we have to live with it or can it be helped? Nobody can claim to cure osteoarthritis as it is a naturally occurring degenerative condition, but the pain and symptoms can be reduced and relieved with correct management. Generally speaking, controlled and sensible movement and activity are good for you. Ensure that you do some form of exercise every day, even if it is a short walk around your garden. Do not put too much strain on your joints and when doing

repetitive activities, such as gardening, make sure that you vary your body position and actions. Some supplements, such as cod liver oil and Glucosamine Sulphate have been proven to help to ease the symptoms of osteoarthritis too. Chiropractors and Physiotherapists can be particularly helpful is assessing the severity of your arthritis, explaining the mechanics behind it and in helping you to devise a treatment and self-management plan to achieve the best results you can.
Don’t live in pain and discomfort – let us help you – Get Well, Stay Well.

Self-pay Private Healthcare Treatment What does it mean and how can I find out more about it?
S
pire The Glen Bristol Hospital is witnessing an increasing number of patients investing in their healthcare by paying for their treatment to give them faster access to medical care. With the ever increasing demands on the NHS, people are looking for other options to speed up getting treatment for procedures that aren’t necessarily life threatening but do cause discomfort and have a negative impact on their lives.
“The fixed fee also covers a follow-up appointment with the consultant if needed and all standard post-operative care including 2 weeks supply of take-home drugs, removal of stitches, dressing changes and any physiotherapy the consultant advises. There will also be no additional cost in the unlikely event that you need to be readmitted in relation to the procedure that has taken place.”
Kate Hoffmann, Matron at Spire Bristol Hospital, explains: “The self-pay option can help to put patients who are waiting for treatment at ease by providing a simple, hassle-free alternative that allows them to be seen within a few days of enquiry”.
To help spread the cost of treatment patients may be eligible for an interest free loan arranged through First Medical Loans. Call 0845 6341199 for details.
“Patients come to the hospital for an initial consultation with their chosen consultant and a treatment plan is agreed. They are then given an all-inclusive fixed price which covers all aspects of their care. The fixed price provides peace of mind and reassurance as patients’ know there will be no hidden or unexpected costs to contend with. The surgeon’s fee, anaesthetist’s fee, and hospital fees which cover nursing care, accommodation and food throughout your stay are all included.”
For more information on how to self-fund your treatment at the hospital, call Spire’s Private Treatment Advisors on 0117 980 4000 between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and they will be happy to guide you through the process. You can also read what some of our self-funded patients have said about their experiences of the hospital by visiting our website, http://www.spirehealthcare.com/bristol/.
One call could save you a lifetime If you have a health concern or you are waiting longer than you would like for treatment, Spire ‘The Glen’ Hospital may be able to help you get your life back on track. Rotary clubs team up to buy vital item for helicopter medics
Music society tuned up and ready to go into new season
MEMBERS of Chipping Sodbury Rotary Club have helped the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity buy a vital piece of kit worth nearly £10,000. They were among 14 Rotary clubs across Bristol and Gloucestershire to raise funds for a video laryngoscope for the helicopter crews. The equipment allows medics to clear a patient’s airway and assist their breathing by inserting a tube with a microscopic
camera. Blocked or damaged airways are common in trauma victims and the video laryngoscope provides a clear image of any blockages or damage suffered. John Christensen, chief executive of GWAAC, said: “We are so thankful for the generosity and kindness shown to us by the Rotary Clubs in District 1100. Their donation has enabled our charity to buy a vital piece of kit.”
AS one successful season ends, another has already been planned by Chipping Sodbury Music Society. Seven concerts featuring mainly locally-based artists will make up the 2015-16 season, starting with the Roaring Fork Quintet. The musicians will be making a return visit to the town by popular demand to play music for woodwind instruments and the French horn. Their performance on October 13 will launch the 68th season of the society, which started life in the 1940s as the Downleaze Music Club. Each season runs from October to May, with concerts
held in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall. After the opening event, audiences can then look ahead to November 10 when the Antara Flute and Harp Duo, sponsored by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, has been booked. Vintage jazz group Sweet Rhythm will be on stage in December, to be followed into 2016 by the Bristol Chamber Choir, the Marylebone Woodwind Trio, local group Harbour Winds and Bristol guitarist Andreas Moutsioulis. Tickets are already available from the society’s website at www.csmusicsociety.co.uk or the box office on 01454 315741.

National Recognition for Yate Heritage Centre Although we at Yate Heritage Centre are not averse to promoting ourselves far and wide, the vast majority of the work here rightly focusses on our wonderful local history and serving the surrounding community. However, every now and again we receive recognition on a wider stage. Recently, Cherry Hubbard our Education Officer submitted Thelma Barlow’s factory works pass for inclusion in the British Museum’s prestigious “Teaching History in 100 Objects”, a national educational project involving any museums with an outstanding object with a fascinating story.
What possible object of national importance could Yate Heritage Centre have you may ask? The item in question is a fragment of a Parnall Aircraft works pass, commonplace enough in wartime factories. However, this works pass was directly involved in probably the most traumatic event in Yate’s history, namely the raid on Parnall Aircraft in February 1941

resulting in 51 casualties with a further 3 in another raid a week later. Thelma Barlow’s pass was retrieved from her handbag having been left behind in the factory in the main bombing raid on the Parnall Aircraft works. The pass tells a visual story. Clearly charred, the fragment has evidently been involved in a dramatic event and was obviously affected by the heat of bomb damage within the handbag. The British Museum was clearly impressed by the historic context of the fragment and how it might enable children to understand the Second World War. It told a clear story of bombing in industrial Britain and also illustrates how female staff were a key feature of most wartime factories. Thus, the fragment, while only small, has enough dramatic history to be included amongst objects such as the Sutton Hoo helmet, the first passenger locomotive and the Bletchley Park enigma machine. Most museums included in this project are either national or major regional institutions. Firstly, we are indebted to
37
Susan Tubey and the Town Council for passing on the object to us. Cherry Hubbard receives our greatest admiration for putting together the application for the artefact to be recognised as something of national importance. I must also thank Thelma Bennett herself who made the pass and its story accessible in the public domain and ultimately for future children to discover the dramatic events of World War II. The artefact is one of many fascinating items in our current Second World War display at Yate Heritage Centre.

My first days as the local MP
A
Luke Hall MP writes for Frome Valley Voice
June, 2015
www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk
s a local man who born and raised in South Gloucestershire, it is a huge honour to be elected as the local MP. Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my predecessor: Steve Webb, for his service to this constituency over the years - I have big shoes to fill, but I will be working as hard as I can for our community and hitting the ground running. It has been a very busy first few days. I have been setting up a drop-in constituency office in the local area which people can visit without having to make an appointment - I want to be as accessible locally as possible and I hope this will start to demonstrate that. I have held my first constituency surgery and met with the Yate and Sodbury Marie Curie Fundraising Group to support their local efforts. I have also starting work
on my next Jobs Fair – I will be inviting local employers to get together under one roof to meet residents in an informal setting, so people who are looking for work have the opportunity to speak to local businesses who are trying to fill vacancies. It can be hugely dispiriting if you receive email after email telling you that your job application has been unsuccessful, and I hope that these Jobs Fairs, where people can speak to employers face to face will help change that locally. I will put the date on my website as soon as it is confirmed. I have found my first days to be faced paced, busy and rewarding, but above anything else, I want to serve my community – South Gloucestershire is my home. If there is ever anything I can help with, please do not hesitate to get in touch: luke. hall.mp@parliament.uk.

Students from Chipping Sodbury School have been offered the opportunity to try a more unconventional way of preparing for their exams. Students have participated in flowing yoga postures, stressbusting breathing techniques and deep relaxation that are aimed to help release stress and tension in the body and mind, leaving the students feeling relaxed and motivated. Local yoga teacher, Nazama Tague, from Yoga-in volunteered her time to teach the students. Nazama said “The physical benefits of yoga are well-known, but yoga also has educational benefits like improving ability to concentrate, building selfconfidence and learning to switch off and relax”. The Cactus proves a sharp operator Richard Drew takes the Citreon C4 Cactus through its paces and finds a car that’s sharp on the inside and soft on the outside. Automatic for the people might be the title of a REM album, but Citroen could have had it in mind when they were thinking about the Cactus. It might be that they want to make life easy for the driver, or perhaps they’re leaving as little to chance as possible, but they’re doing everything they can to help us. The lights come on automatically, so do the windscreen wipers, and unless you really want to tinker you can leave the air-con to its own devices. The Cactus is a typical Citroen car, full of innovative thinking, some of it more useful than others. The French company also likes to coin a phrase for their thinking. Take the ‘Magic Wash’; in other words putting the windscreen washer nozzle on the wiper rather than the bonnet. The company claims it saves 50% of the water spayed onto the screen. Clever, and simple, and it’s the same kind of thinking that makes you warm to the interior. There are leather strap door handles, inspired the sales patter tells us, by high end luggage. It also claims that it’s part of a
harmonious interior design that let’s us connect with our ‘inner calm’. I’m not so sure about that, it is a car after all. Still, my 9 year old loved the handles, and the general design of the inside is clever. Take the passenger airbag, situated behind the sun visor in the roof. This allows the glove compartment to be less bulky, and a lot more stylish. It’s not all good news inside. The front arm rest is so long that it’s a struggle to use the handbrake, and awkward to change gear. Just as well it pulls up out of the way. But there is much more to get excited about. The 7 inch entertainment system continues the theme of extra help with a reversing camera as well as the sat nav, phone sync, MP3 connection, and digital radio (at last, the chance to listen to BBC 6 Music on the move!). The cruise control includes a pause button, which allows you to slow and then resume your speed, as well as a speed limiter which is helpful through motorway speed cameras. Given the automatic tendencies of the car, it would have been nice to drive an automatic version for

the Cactus, rather than the 5 speed manual I had. Those selling the Catcus are keen to burnish its eco credentials. I was given a petrol model to try, which might be a sensible option, given a possible future clampdown on diesel vehicles in cities. It also has a stop and start system for when you are at a standstill. The ride is smooth, the steering responsive, and although it may not nock your socks off like high end cars, it is certainly a contender for those of us without a huge budget. A lot of what I found in the top of the range Flair model is in higher end cars, but the cost of the Cactus, from just under £13,000 to just over £18,000 makes it very good value for money. There is one more thing
to discuss about this car; the exterior. That is when we have a ‘marmite moment’. The strange bubble wrap effect on the side of the car, often highlighted in a different colour is known in Citroen speak as ‘Airbump’. It really is like a high tech bubble wrap, air pockets protecting your doors from bumps and scrapes. It really divides opinion, some loving it as a feature, some much less so. It all fits in with Citroen’s aim of making life easier (and cheaper) for you, but there are those for whom it is a deal breaker. I suspect they will turn their attention in the showroom to the funkier DS3. For the record, my 9 year old wasn’t a fan of the Airbump, but then she’s not the ones paying the body shop bill.

REVD MALCOLM STRANGE
(Priest with responsibility for St Peter’s) I spent some time one summer in a small mountain village in the Sierra Nevada mountains in Spain. It was like going back in time living in a community who worked the mountain terraces in the same way their medieval forefathers had. There was a strange mix in the village of things never having changed, a real sense of community especially at the time

of Fiesta, yet mingled in amongst this were some trappings of the 20th century, especially the vibrant and excited tones of the football commentaries on the TV sets.
always remember that the people of St Peter’s, St Saviour’s, St James’s, St Michael’s and All Saints are gathered in Worship and Prayer as community, for community.
At the heart of the community was the Parish Church, there was a real pride amongst the villagers, it was lovingly cared for and one of my lasting images will be the sound of the bell ringing out through the valley calling the workers from the fields to come to the celebration of the Mass (The Eucharist). As the bell tolled people made their way reverently and respectfully to meet their God in worship. It underlined the intertwining in their lives, of the spiritual, the physical and social aspects of human existence.
I can assure you whatever your religious persuasion, we remember and pray for everyone in our local communities, we hold before God the needs of Frampton and Winterbourne, all we are doing, undertaking or facing. Long may the bells ring!
Bells have always called people to worship and I love hearing the Bells of St Peters ringing out in Frampton Cotterell on Sunday mornings. We are so lucky at St Peters to have an active team of ringers who help us to mark joyous and sad occasions, with the bells of our church ringing out. Bells remind us that our Parish Churches are there for all people so when you here the bells
God Bless Revd Malcolm Strange

Music in the Meadows set for 3rd year
The strongest lineup yet is being promised for a music festival in Iron Acton. Music in the Meadows is scheduled for the July 3 and 4, and is being organised by Acton Aid. This is the schedule for the weekend: Friday 3rd July Mash in the Meadows - an evening of music from five local bands. The music ranges from rock, folk and blues to funk and jazz, with bands appearing on a Glastonbury type stage. The line up this year features: Celestine and her band. Mum of two slims her way to run 10k A local mum is aiming to run the Bradley Stoke 10k this month in under an hour after loosing two stone in four months with a slimming group. Frankie Hunt, 32, lost the weight after the birth of her second child. She said; “I joined my local Slimming World Group and it changed my eating habits and gave me a healthy outlook for life – so much so it made me discover a love of running”. “I entered myself and my husband, Kevin into a 10K event as a target to work towards and was pleased to finish it under 64 minutes and beat Kevin by two minutes!” Frankie and Kevin are signed up for the Bradley Stoke 10K in June and this time Frankie is hoping to complete it under an hour and to finish four minutes ahead of Kevin. Frankie has now become a Slimming World group leader in Winterbourne. The sessions will be held at The Greenfield Centre, Park Avenue at 9.30am and Elm Park Primary School, Nicholls Lane at 7.30pm.

T: 01454 800 120 52 www.fromevalleyvoice.co.uk Chilli Morning’s warm glow of success at Badminton reflects on Chipping Sodbury rider THE most prestigious prize in eventing returned to British hands when William Fox-Pitt secured victory on Chilli Morning at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials. A finish that went right to the wire had thousands of spectators gripped on the last of four days of close competition. Lying second after the dressage and cross-country phases, William clinched his second Badminton title – 11 years after his first - by going clear in the deciding showjumping stage when many others faulted. Later he was quick to praise Chipping Sodbury’s Nick Gauntlett for a six-year involvement in the success of the horse – the first stallion to win Badminton. Nick had originally found Chilli Morning, rode him in his early career and got him to the highest four-star level of the sport, including completing Burghley in 2011, before the owners moved the horse initially to Mary King and then to the Fox-Pitt yard. The new Badminton champion said: “Nick deserves all the credit. He’s done a brilliant job with Chilli and I’ve been very lucky to take on the horse, who’s obviously now got a good chance of being selected for the Rio Olympics.” Nick said: “I’m delighted for William and Chilli, who is such a lovely horse.” Nick’s own Badminton didn’t pan out as hoped. He withdrew Crown Talisman when the horse

developed a high temperature and although completing the dressage with the less experienced El Grado, decided against running him across country. However, he was presented with a coveted Armada Dish, given the year after a rider completes Badminton for the fifth time. As one of the UK’s biggest sporting events, Badminton attracted huge crowds – most turning out to watch the testing cross-country challenge. maintained his position after going across country, leaving him “still living the dream” of a much wanted victory. But last to go in the showjumping as the tension mounted, a costly three fences down meant he has now completed Badminton a record 35 times but still hasn’t won. The errors dropped Nereo to sixth place while his stablemate, Calico Joe, just missed a top 20 finish. Germany’s Ingrid Klimke was runner-up with Horseware Hale Bob after a “wonderful” cross-country ride and a clear showjumping round, while past
winner Jock Paget was third with Clifton Lush and his Kiwi teammate, Mark Todd, was fourth on Leonidas II. Bettina Hoy was fifth for Germany on Designer 10 and Nicola Wilson was the highest placed British woman - seventh with One Two Many. She also completed with Beltane Queen. Last year’s champion, Sam Griffiths, was tenth on Paulank Brockagh. A showjumping disaster for Oliver Townend, third after cross-country with Armada, dropped them to 11th place.

Old Man Fram in early season form
Coalpit Heath driving forward
Frampton Cotterell Cricket Club have had a good start to the season, with first and second teams showing promotion form. May has seen a full quota of games played for all 3 of Frampton’s teams, with the weather not interrupting proceedings at all. Chasing a 3rd successive promotion, the 1st team have continued where they left off last season and had amassed 4 wins out of 4 before losing the last game of May at home to Whitchurch. They still sit in a promotion spot in Division 1. However they did conquer local rivals Coalpit Heath in a very close but very well spirited clash, as well as toppling Filton based rivals Bohemians who have also shared successive promotions. Things are looking bright, with lots of notable performances. Half centuries have been scored by, Gary Winsor, Luke Baker, Tim Mason and Phil Cordy. Sam Coleman also took his maiden 1st team 5 wicket haul against Bitton. Young Oliver Morris and Skipper Gary Winsor (pictured) dragged Frampton out of the mire with an unbeaten 82 run winning partnership against Stoke Bishop after Frampton fell to 51-7 chasing 133. Oliver showing lots of promise for the future success of the 1st team.

The 2nd team have also had a good start to the season and currently sit in 4th place in Division 8, winning 3 and losing 2 of their games. Pete Rebera has starred with the bat, showing some of the youth how its done with 2 classy innings, both of which were unbeaten, racking up 50 and 116 in 2 successive weeks against Lodway and Bitton respectively. Ian Roylance picked up a 69 and Derek Lee bowled his way to an impressive 4 wickets in the win against Old Cathedralians.

The 3rd team are suffering the usual late player changes of the 1st and 2nd teams and are currently 7th in division 11, winning 2 and losing 3 games so far. Chris Gay continues to be successful in the 3’s with a match winning haul of 5-21 against Twyford House. Simon Hughes, Navin Dahiya and Ian Woods have all scored half centuries so far and the team will look to push on as some of the club’s youth players return to Saturday cricket after finishing exams and university action for the summer.
Matthew Toms reports on a good start to the season for the Heath Things are moving apace at local cricket club Coalpit Heath. Having strengthened all their teams over the winter and made substantial investments in their ground facilities, the results are showing on the pitch as well. The 1XI have won four out of their five first games, only loosing narrowly by one run to local rivals Frampton Cotterell in a tight encounter. The second team are also off to a flying start, having won all five of their games so far and the 3rd XI are also holding their own. The club has recently installed some new covers for their ground, thanks to a grant from the ECB and support from local businesses Exhibition and Displays Direct and Rock House Boarding Kennels. They have already helped the club get the game on when previously rain would have stopped play. The popular Friday youth nights have started again. The sessions are open to everyone aged 9 and over and all gear and training is provided free of charge. They are held at the club’s ground near the Kendleshire Golf Club between 6:30 - 8pm.

Frampton Stumble over the Finish Line Frampton Athletic’s first team finished their season in disappointing fashion, picking up a draw and a loss in their final 2 games of the season. A 2-2 draw away to Greyfriars Athletic, which saw young goalkeeper Lewis Jefferies take a starting place upfront, due to suspension’s and injuries, preceded a 3-0 defeat away to AEK Boco on the last day of the season. Mike Beake got himself on the score sheet against Greyfriars Athletic with a bullet of a free kick, but the solitary goal wasn’t enough to pip Liam Downer to the top of the clubs goalscoring charts, as Liam’s tally of 18 goals saw him claim the ‘Top Goalscorer’ trophy for the club at the end of season presentation night.

The results saw Frampton finish a disappointing 7th in the table, in a season that offered a lot of promise in the first half of the season, but fitness may have taken its toll in the second half, and with an ageing squad it was always going to be a tough ask to keep the momentum going. With Frampton’s Reserve side already finished their remaining games for the season and finishing 8th in the table, their players were on hand to support the Academy side in their last game of the season, which saw them face a home match against a stubborn Bristol City Deaf side. The first half of the game was a very even affair, but Frampton turned on the style in the second half and two goals from Lewis Jefferies (the goalkeeper-comestriker) and further goals from Clayton McFarlane and Pat Jenkins saw Frampton race to a 4-0 victory. That result saw Frampton’s Academy side secure 6th position in the table in their inaugural season. Frampton’s Youngster Take the Plaudits Frampton celebrated the end of their season with their annual presentation night on Saturday 2nd May. It was the
new generation of Frampton youngsters that took the main awards on the night, which will hopefully lead them to future glory at the club over the coming years. The Young Player of the Year award went to 16 year old goalkeeper, Lewis Jefferies, who has played consistently well across all 3 teams when asked to do so (not to mention his 2 goals when asked to play upfront). The clubs top award, the Player of the Year, went to 17 year old, Ryan Brownlow. Ryan started the season playing week in, week out for the Academy side, but has impressed consistently throughout the season and found himself playing regularly for the first team come the end of the season and fully deserves the award. The new crop of youngsters introduced at Frampton this season have shown a huge desire to improve the clubs fortune’s on the pitch and will continue to do so next season. A special mention should also go to the winner of the Clubman of the Year award, which went to the club’s Chairman, Mike Williams. Mike is at the ground before the players turn up to ensure that the pitch has been

Winterbourne have completed their league fixtures for May, and have made a strong start. Currently, each side occupies third place in their respective leagues. The first team, led by youngsters George Ford and Marcus Purnell, have recovered from a sluggish start. In their last two fixtures in the month, they dismissed the opposition for less than 100 runs. They have also seen strong performances with the bat from youngster Ben Slade. The seconds have the most travelling to do in their league - Premier Two - but their experienced side have started strongly. Veteran Keith Ford continues to lead from the front with the bat, with Dave Andrews giving control at the start of the innings with the new ball. Youngsters Kieran Slade and Dave Moller are also starting to establish themselves in the side. In the thirds, openers Kevin Slade and Sam Emmott have been scoring the runs. The most impressive bowling stints have come from youngster Lewis Ford and the legendary Rich Jarman,
with all-rounder Shane Parker arguably proving the team’s most valuable player to date. The fourth team, led by Nick Bracey, are making good progress following their promotion last term. Super Bob Vickery and Simon Snartt have been key players with the new ball, whilst the runs have been shared around. The most pleasing thing for the club has been the firm establishment of the fifth team. They won every game they played in May, with a fantastic mix of young cricketers and more established senior players. Amongst others, Ashley Oakes, Owen Lingard, Matt Moller and Nicky Shine all have a bright future in the game. Mike Green has led the Sunday league side to a strong start. They have a young side and will be keen to impress in their first season in the competition. Youth Academy training continues at the club at 6:30pm every Friday night, offering coaching to children of all ages. All new players are welcome to come along and try a session at any stage.
