FromThePit is an annual curated exhibition of music photography featuring images of New Zealand musicians, captured by some of the best music photographers in the country. Dozens of photographers are ‘in the pit’ of music venues up and down Aotearoa each week, documenting our vibrant music scene. It's a difficult and unpredictable environment, but they work tirelessly to encapsulate the magic before them. These photos are an important reminder of the power of live music as musicians, venues and the whole eco-system of creatives struggle in these COVID times. This year’s exhibition featured two workshops: a photography talk by Charles Brooks and a panel session entitled ‘When will you get a real job’. This year we also had three giant posters promoting the exhibition in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Special thanks to Phantom Posters and NZ Music Commission for making this happen.
FromThePit aims to raise the profile of New Zealand music photography through an annual curated exhibition showing images of the highest quality.
The exhibition featured recent images of New Zealand musicians playing live in New Zealand - most of the images were taken within the previous 18 months despite COVID’s impact on the number of live shows. This year we also had a few archive shots, including some shot on film from years (and venues) past. FromThePit 2021 featured the work of 32 photographers from across NZ and was on display at Monster Valley, Auckland, Thistle Hall, Wellington and the Christchurch Arts Centre. Some of the images were also on display at Q Theatre to coincide with the Taite Music Awards and NZ Music Month.
• We were delighted to have an awesome set of supportive sponsors again this year: • Sony was our main financial sponsor and we thank them for once again lending us their Sony Bravia screens to show the AV at our three exhibitions • Auckland UNESCO City Of Music partnered with us this year and organized the Charles Brooks photography workshop. We look forward to growing this relationship
• Epson generously printed the images for all three exhibitions to a super high quality • Print Art prepared the prints and labels for hanging along with transport logistics • Monster Valley hosted us again so fantastically in Auckland and we were delighted to also show our exhibition at Thistle Hall, Wellington and The Arts Centre, Christchurch • And finally we thank NZ Music, NZ Music Month and Independent Music NZ for their ongoing kind support and enthusisiam
