Tweed Bait & Tackle Larry Bennett opened Tweed Bait and Tackle last May. As an avid fisherman himself, he felt he could fill a service gap in the region since there was no bait and tackle shop within 40 km of Tweed at the time. “One of the first things we began working on was setting up to sell all the fishing and hunting licenses for the MNRF [Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry], which we have done now. We are pleased with the increased traffic it brings into the store,” said Bennett, when interviewed at the store in late March. Bennett came to Tweed in 2012 from Burlington with his wife Nancy. They relocated to Tweed because of the beauty of the local area and because Larry was hooked on the fishing opportunities in Stoco and other lakes in the Land O’Lakes region. Bennett also owns LB Personal Services, specializing in taxes and estate planning, www.lbpersonalservices.com. Tweed Bait and Tackle offers a full range of fishing tackle, including pro tackle, lures, live bait, and fishing equipment, such as rods and reels, and tackle boxes. The store also carries Mystical Fireworks. They now have a large assortment of fireworks for all occasions and will also be able to get special orders so customers can realize savings for larger purchases for special events. Ask about their birthday parties with fireworks. They have their Business Firearms License and now can cater to area hunters. The store will be re-stocking the most common

ammunition and will order in special orders for customers within a reasonable amount of time before hunting season. They also carry Back roads Map Books, and Eastern Ontario Fishing, the bible for fishing in Eastern Ontario, complete with depth charts for all the lakes. The store has also been completely Tweed Bait & Tackle carries a full line of fishing & hunting supplies. dock at Stoco Lake, which is open during redesigned and re-merchandised this winter in order to fishing season. To mark the start of Pike season on May improve the customer experience and to show off all of the new products that are 14, 2016, there will be the Annual Pike fishing derby on Stoco Lake. Registration coming on stream. “We hit the ground running when we will take place at the Kiosk. The cost is $35 opened on May 1st, 2015 at the beginning per person, 2 people to a boat, and 1st prize of the fishing and summer tourist season,” is 50% of the registration fees; 2nd is 35%; said store manager Eric Geen, “But after the and 3rd is 15%. For more information summer we talked to customers and asked contact the store at 613-478-5757 or email them what we should carry for them and tweedbaitandtackle@gmail.com. Throughout 2016, visitors to the store began planning to take the store apart, paint it new colors, and put it back together in a will have the opportunity to fill in a ballot to enter a contest for a chance to win a fly-in better way.” The store was closed for a couple of weeks fishing trip. Tweed Bait and Tackle is located at 307 in March and is now reopened with all the Victoria Avenue (Hwy. 37) in the heart of changes in place. Tweed Bait and Tackle has a kiosk at the Tweed.

Land Of Lakes Roofing

Kevin Fenner has a lot of experience in the roofing business. He worked in an industrial setting as the manager of a roofing company during boom years in Alberta, and after moving to Ontario 15 years ago he built a company with 25 employees that did roofing for homeowners and for home construction companies in the Perth and Carleton Place areas. In the last few years, however, he has narrowed his focus to residential roofing jobs, mainly replacement roofs on family homes and cottages in the Lanark County and Land O’Lakes regions. He prices every job based on a site visit. “Every house has its own individual character and technical challenges. For example, you might not want to put a metal roof on a older home that is not completely square because it wouldn’t look right, but western red shingles or architectural shingles might be a better option. Materials are only one factor that plays into a price. That’s why I have to physically look at each job.” One of Fenner’s key concerns is with customer satisfaction, and a major component of his website, Landoflakesroofing.com is a long list of customer comments on the jobs that he has done in the past. A common theme is the professional look of the new roof and the lack of mess around the house once the job is done. “We are not interested in compromise,” he said of his five-member crew, who work on only one job at a time. “We plan out all of our jobs; we stick with them once we

Kevin Fenner, owner, Land of Lakes Roofing start out, and we won’t tip garbage out into a farmer’s field at the end of the day.” Roofing installation includes ensuring proper venting, ice and water seal in valleys, attention to skylights and other features, etc. “One of the unfortunate things about the roofing industry is a lack of regulation,” said Kevin, “anyone can say they are a roofer, but it is a tough trade. It is physically demanding and you have to know what you are doing.” One of the improvements that Fenner

has seen in his long career has been improvements in the technology of materials, which means that new roofs, whether they are steel or shingle roofs, tend to last longer. “In the past we didn’t have the synthetic underlays that we have now and the quality of other materials has gone up as well.” Warranties reflect those changes. Architectural shingles, for example, come with a 50 year, transferable warranty. Land of Lakes roofing also provides a standard 5-year warranty on all labour. “Our goal when we do a job is to foresee everything that needs to be done, use the right materials and do the job right, and then we hope never to hear from the customer again, except to hear they have recommended us to their neighbour,” he said. Spring and summer are the optimum seasons for new roofs, and Land of Lakes roofing is booking work for the coming season now. They do about 100 roofs a year, with a 4-6 week waiting list for construction. For a free consultation, contact Kevin at landoflakesroofing@live.ca.
