Cycling to End Poverty tour in Piccadilly
by Craig Bakay
A
bout 75 cyclists and their 20 support staff spent the night on the Frontenac Arena grounds last week as part of their Sea to Sea, Cycling to End Poverty tour.
“Everybody’s having an awesome time, morale is high,” said tour director Ed Witvoet. Their goal is to cycle from Vancouver to Halifax in nine weeks, raising awareness and funds as they go. “We’re trying to end the cycle of poverty,” Witvoet said. Sea to Sea grants funds to nonprofits along the route, in riders hometowns and globally through World Renew and Partners Worldwide. Riders pay a $500 registration fee and are expected to raise $3,000 per week or $12,000 for the summer. “We’ve already raised $1.5 million,” Witvoet said. “One guy has raised $72,000 alone.” They do about 100 kilometres a day with rest stops at 25, 50 and 75 kilometres. Two vans carry support workers, riders’ gear and food. “We we stop for dinner, everybody has a chore to do,” he said. Witvoet said he expects there will have been 135 cyclists taking part with 52 going the entire nine weeks. Riders can sign up for parts of the tour or the entire route. “We’ll gain a number of riders when we hit Ottawa,” he said. And speaking of Ottawa, that was the goal when they left Piccadilly last Saturday morning. The plan was to ride Westport Road to Westport and then on to Perth on County Road 10. “We chose this (Piccadilly) as our stopping

“Neverending story” on Mayor’s plans just won’t seem to go away by Craig Bakay t appears that much of North Frontenac Council has heard enough about Mayor Ron Higgins innovative and imaginative theories about how the Township might evolve. However, when the topic arose from Business Arising Out of the Minutes at last Friday’s regular Council meeting in Ompah, it also appeared at least one councilor still had a few things to say. First, to recap, the Mayor has been researching some contemporary technologies (on his own, not as head of Council) which he believes can be successfully adapted to North Frontenac. He presented some of these three meetings ago when Council met in Calabogie. Since that meeting represented considerable mileage, The Frontenac News contacted the Mayor about the meeting and during the course of the interview, a story emerged about thinking outside the box when it came to municipal governance. But, some North Frontenac Councilors took exception to the Mayor’s candor and philosophies such that they requested he write an explanation that emphasized he was working at his own initiative and not the Township’s which The News published as an op-ed piece. But that didn’t satisfy all of Council, and it particular Coun. Vernon Hermer. “You (Higgins) stated there was a resolution, I don’t recall any such resolution,” Hermer said. Hermer went on to question the nature of the Ubuntu philosophy and connecting it to the “Nelson Mandela Effect.”

Marie. They also took a jaunt along Manitoulin Island and rejoined the mainland at Tobermory.
This is the fourth year for the annual trek which has also included routes from Seattle to Jersey City and Los Angeles to New York City “The communities we’ve visited have all been great,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of media and we’ve even had great weather.”
Young plowman finds gold at plowing matches by Catherine Reynolds unter Chown is a modest young man with a bold plan. Speaking from his house on Wolfe Island, the 18-year-old hopes to outplow some of the best farmers in the country and win the upcoming International Plowing Match (IPM). It’s an ambitious plan that might just work. A five-time winner of his junior class at past IPMs, Chown just won his adult division (two-fur-

row conventional plow) and Best Land Overall at the Frontenac County Plowing Match in Battersea last Saturday. “It was a good day,” Chown says with a smile. Using a 1968 plow and a 1967 David Brown tractor, Chown caught the attention of the judges with his straight and even furrows. “You have to maintain a constant depth,” he explains. “The furrow also has to be even and level. You have to be careful with your ins and outs and watch how you change the soil from one end to another.” “It’s expensive, but it’s a lot of fun,” says the teenager when asked what he likes about plowing. “I don’t know, honestly. I just find it really interesting. It’s hard, but fun.” Trained by his grandfather, Dennis Mosier, Chown has spent hundreds of hours turning the neighbour’s soil on Wolfe Island to plant soya beans and corn. “I do a lot of plowing to practice for the IPM
in September,” he says earnestly. The eldest of four brothers, Chown credits his grandfather for giving him the skills needed to compete on the world stage. Mosier is the former operator of a dairy farm on Wolfe Island and a qualified judge of plowing matches. “He’s done a lot. He’s spent a lot of time with me,” says Chown with gratitude. “It helps that he’s a judge. I can see what they’re looking for and fix it.” Excited about the upcoming match in Walton, in the Township of East Huron, Chown is also looking forward to starting a Civil Engineering Course this fall at St. Lawrence College in Kingston. Prize money from previous matches has helped pay for his education. If he wins at the IPM again this year, he will earn a trophy and money he can apply to school. It’s a golden prize for a young man with a bright future who is becoming the pride of Frontenac County. “Hunter has been plowing with his grandfather for years,” says Martin Oomen, President of the Frontenac County Plowmen’s Association, the volunteer group that hosted last Saturday’s match. “He’s a good plowman, good sport and talented young man,” says the president.. “We wish him the best of luck, blue skies and good plowing at the IPM.” Smiling at the thought of plowing in the rain, Chown notes with good humour, “It’s not my first time getting soaked.”

The couple that collects Volkswagens together . . . by Craig Bakay inda Cyr’s husband Reg surprised her at a party celebrating a milestone occasion with a special gift — a white 1973 Volkswagen SuperBeetle convertable. She’d always wanted one. The Cyr’s have a ‘fleet’ of Volkswagens including a 1972 camper, a 2000 and Reg’s souped up drag Bug, which was also on display at the 22nd annual Verona Classic Car Show last weekend. So, why Bugs? “They’re very dependable,” she said. “They’re a really fun, loveable little car. “It makes you fell younger.” Cyr had plenty of visitors at the car show. “People smile when they see it,” she said. “Everybody either had one or knew somebody who had one. “Everybody has a memory about a beetle.” The Cyr fleet began with a relatively new Beetle, again a gift from Reg, as a surprise for her retirement. “Then Linda said she wanted an older one,” Reg said. Well, it wasn’t long before Reg got the ‘bug’ as well. “This is a ’68 Bug, modified with a mid-engine turbo VW VR6,” he said. “It was built as a drag car . . . a street and strip build. “But it is street legal.” Reg said that for him, restoring old cars is a mixture of nostalgia, childhood and university memories. “They’re all fun,” he said. “And you get the same reaction from just about everybody.”

Water levels returning to normal
T
he Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority (CRCA) has downgraded the flood status for inland lakes. Conditions on inland lakes in the Cataraqui Region continue to improve and it is expected that water levels will return to normal in the coming days. Water managers continue to conduct operations to minimize the effects and pass flows down through the system. Dams (water control structures) remain open and continue to flow more than normal for this time of year. The CRCA is urging residents to exercise caution outdoors around lakes and streams, and to stay away from deep, fast flowing watercourses, as well as any dams and outflow channels. CRCA staff will continue to monitor conditions and forecasts, and will update statements as needed. This Watershed Conditions Statement will remain in effect until August 22, at which point conditions can be assumed to be normal, unless an updated statement is issued. Previously high water warnings had been issued for Loughborough and Charleston Lakes.
Higgins offered to send a correction to the paper if that was what Council wanted but the majority seemed to want to let this sleeping dog lie. “This is three meetings in a row this has come before me,” said Coun. Gerry Martin. “It’s a neverending story.” “I’ve seen enough of this in the paper,” said Coun. Wayne Good. “It doesn’t need to go back in the paper, just your acknowledgement is enough,” said Bedard. “At least you’re looking at options,” said Dep. Mayor Fred Perry. New OP a go Planner Megan Ruckwald told Council that the Township’s Official Plan is ready to go to County Council for final approval, barring any last-minute changes from the Township. She said the final tweaking included a commercial logging restriction within 150 metres of a waterbody, some natural heritage comments from the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority, some policy clarification and rewording and the updating of existing map layers. 50 km/hr speed limits Council approved a 50 kph speed limit for Brule Lake Road, Sunday Lake Road and Austris Road. Coun. Vernon Hermer said: “The delegation wanted 40 kph. Several 60 kph signs are missing and at $500 a pop, that could get expensive.” Public Works Manager Jim Phillips said: “We lose lake and road signs all the time — it’s a common thing.” Bridge repport Council accepted the 2016 Ontario Structure Inspection Manual Bridge and Culvert Inspection report (488 culverts). Office: 613.279.2657 Public Works Manager Jim Phillips also took the opPO Box 285, 14180 Rd. 38 portunity to pitch a grant apSharbot Lake, ON K0H 2P0 plication to rehabilitate the Meyers Cave Bridge to the Christopher Jones tune of $1.4 million (if sucSales Representative cessful, the Township share Cell: 343.363.6328 would be $140,000). chris@antoinerealestate.com “It’s a good project, there’s a history of accidents there,” Phillips said. “It would involve a wider deck and then we’d redo the road on either side. “If we don’t get the grant, Plan B would be to rehab it as our budget will allow.” “Would there be bicycle lanes?” asked Coun. Wayne Good. “There’ll be paved shoulders,” said Phillips. “Bicycles can ride on them if they want to.”

T
he last little while has been a busy time for the Clarendon & Miller Community Archives (CMCA), Coordinator Brenda Martin told North Frontenac Council last week at its regular meeting in Ompah. The CMCA is planning an open house Aug. 30 from 1-4 p.m. at the Plevna Library to update the public on its activities as well as say goodbye to its student workers who have put in many hours on its various projects. “The Historic Tours of North Frontenac is very exciting,” Martin said. “I guarantee you will learn a lot about this Township you did not know before.” She said that mostly through the summer students, the entire CMA website has been revised and updated, a virtual tour planned and enhanced hundreds of photos (removing scratches and folds etc). “The goal is to have the Tour Guidebook at least ready for production by Aug. 30,” she said. That project was funded by the Township and a Community Foundation for Kingston and Area Grant. Martin also provided updates for the 2017 and 2016 Township Community Grants. On the 2016 grant, she said: “The 10th anniversary of CMCA was a celebration Memories of General Stores. “Although that research is stored at the Archives in binders and available on the CMCA website, our committee members regretted it had not been published in book format. “The book has been compiled (and) it is our intention to publish limited copies for the local libraries and the Cloyne Museum. It should be ready for the end of August.” On the 2017 grant she said: “The lodge research event May 6 had a huge turnout. The material was produced in book format with complimentary copies provided to the Ompah Community Library, the Cloyne Public Library, the Plevna Public Library and the

SINCE 1970 Cloyne Museum. “It was not deemed a major fundraiser, and we will publish more copies as the demand requires.” Also on the 2017 grant, Martin said they’ve done “extensive research” on 10 historic signs “based on the best information and photos available to us.”

irgil Garrett, of Sharbot Lake, has opened up his home this year as his bit for the Central Frontenac Canada 150 celebrations. He has been showing and talking about his 9 grandfather clocks (which he built) as well as the 101-year-old Model T he has in his garage. His goal was to have 150 visitors by the end of the summer. Last week, he hit 150, and had now reached 154. He is still accepting visitors, but call first in case he is out and about. His phone number is 613-279-2286. The other milestone is a collective one. Three years ago, Jim Macpherson started up a weekday evening outdoor jam in the summers. They met at the caboose in the railroad park at first, eventually switching to the beach. Last fall, Jim was with Craig Bakay, one of the regular jammers, when the two came up with the idea that this summer the jam would be restricted to Canadian songs until 150 were sung. Participants in the jam, starting in late May, took on the challenge, and prepared songs by well known and obscure Canadian artists alike to bring to the Wednesday night jams. By mid-July 129

Canadian songs had been sung, and then came a snag. It rained two Wednesdays in a row. However, last Wednesday, August 9, it looked like a go until a torrential downpour hit at 6:50, ten minutes before the jam was to start. The rain ended however, and the jammers gathered on the covered stage and began, a little over two hours later, they played song # 150, “Ahead by a Century” by the Tragically Hip. The entire list of songs is posted on the Facebook page Flash Jam 150. Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell had a few songs each, and there were selections by Hank Snow and Wilf Carter, and a larger number by Neil Young. The most popular songwriter had at least 15 selections by my count, and that was Gordon Lightfoot. “It really is amazing how many great songs Gordon Lightfoot has written,” said Macpherson.

• On Friday August 11, Arden was treated to a concert performed by the Ardenaires and the Arden Glee Club. MC Terry Kennedy guided the audience through various eras of music. Many of the tunes performed by each group were Canadian based, either written or performed originally, or both, .The Ardenaires paid a special tribute all those from the Arden area who gave their lives for their Country during the Wars. It was Indeed a pleasure to see former residents and Ardenaire and Glee Club performers Dora Scott and Gordon MacRae attend the concert. Thanks to the leaders Helen Praskey and James Duthie for thrilling the audience with their favorite tunes. • On Saturday evening, a concert of another flavour was held at the Community Centre. The Hall was literally jumping to the Shred Kelly Band from BC. Named “Lake Up” two, Sage and the rest of the group performed tunes from their old tracks and some new music, as well. No one can tell this reporter that “70” is old and out of shape because there were many, older than 70, rocking out to the tunes. Thanks to Lisa Matson for bussing those rowdies from North of Highway 7 home, safely. The internet is rampant with quack remedies just itching to take your money. Many of them sound too good to be true and probably are. Before investing in these suspect “cures”, check with your doctor or pharmacist. They can add a scientific perspective that will help you decide whether it’s worth the money. In authorizing new dings for sale in Canada and the U.S., Health Canada and the Federal Drug Administration must have proof that a new drug does what it is supposed to do and is safe over the long term. There is talk in the U.S. that approval times should be shortened to make new drugs available sooner. Not always a good idea! The drug, thalidomide, was OK’d in Canada and Europe. The U.S. didn’t because of some deformities showing up in newborns. It’s better to use caution and thorough investigation before new drugs are released. Main body organs like the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas, keep humming along doing their job without our having to think about it. We know what we have to do to keep our heart healthy but how about our kidneys? To keep your kidneys healthy, keep your blood pressure in check. If you’re a diabetic, keep blood sugars normal. Reduce salt intake to under 2300 mg of sodium daily. Limit alcohol intake and keep your cholesterol and weight levels in check. One other thing...Don’t smoke. It makes kidney damage worse. When visiting a walk-in clinic or seeing a doctor other than your regular one, be sure to inform the doctor if you are taking “blood thinners” like warfarin. Some antibiotics can affect the levels of warfarin in the blood. The doctor who knows you are taking warfarin can prescribe a drug that doesn’t interact.

This presentation is another initiative of the Friends of Bon Echo. The second way you can help save the skinks is by becoming a member or renewing your membership to the Friends of Bon Echo Park who are championing Ontario’s only lizard with a special “Adopt A Skink” program. When you renew your membership, you can donate a little extra to support skink awareness and conservation in the park and adopt your own adorable plush lizard. Each additional donation of $15 gets you an adorable skink stuffie. For more information on how you can help or to retrieve the downloadable pdf of the colouring page go to http://www.Bonechofriends.ca/events/ adopt-a-skink/ • Pineview Free Methodist Church is hosting a “Show Us Your Talent” on Saturday, August 26 beginning at 7pm. South Frontenac Road rally – pulling the township together by Jeff Green he Township of South Frontenac’s major Canada 150 event of the summer seasons, a Road Rally and Celebration, will be based at Harrowsmith Centennial Park, but all corners of the large township are taking part. Travelers by road or bicycle will have the opportunity to visit some of the seven sites around the township where activities are planned to celebrate a different Canadian Province or Territory. By registering at Centennial Park starting at 10am, each vehicle will receive a passport and a map of the sites. “At each site there will be an activity to complete, as well as a fun fact sheet to fill in, and a photo op. Participants who do all three – the fact sheet does not need to be correct only filled in – will receive three stamps in their passport. Each stamp can be traded in for a ballot, which will be thrown in a drum. Ballots will be pulled from the drum at the end of the day for a series of prizes worth a total of $2,500.” said event organizer Pam Morey. Activities will follow provincial themes, such as mountains
T
in BC, dinosaurs in Alberta, etc. Rally sites are located in all four districts of the township and in addition to the provincial sites, there are bonus sites which are points of interest in the township, including spots such as the Holleford Crater. Ballots can also be earned at the bonus sites. “The idea is for rally goers to pick up a map and decide where they want to go and enjoy themselves,” said Morey, “not so much to visit all of the sites, which could make for a long day.” In addition to the car rally sites, a bike route has been set up, cyclists will be setting out from Centennial Park and accessing two provincial sites as well as three bonus sites. Starting at 1 o’clock, the seven provincial sites will open at Centennial Park, in addition to a wide variety of other events, including: live music all day, a vendor’s village, petting zoo, 4H club animals, inflatable slides and houses, food trucks, a beer garden, and more. The rally portion of the day wraps up at 4 o’clock, and the
other events at the park will carry on from there. The prize draw (participants must be there in person to win prizes) will take place around 6:15 and the music and fun will continue on into the evening until dusk when fireworks will mark the end of the rally. “This is an event for the whole family, and the great thing about it is how many different groups from throughout the township are participating, by running provincial sites or otherwise. The idea is to travel and enjoy South Frontenac while celebrating the culture of the ten provinces. There will be lots of surprises along the way and in the Park. Whether people are interested in the car rally, cycling or just enjoying the events at the Park, it will be a chance for everyone to get together and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday,” said Morey. There are posters throughout the township about the event, and look to the Frontenac News next week for more details. Full details and maps will be available at Centennial Park on the 26th.

regattas in Carleton Place, Gananoque and North Bay. A number of young Sydenham paddlers will be ending their season on Saturday, while eight of the older athletes will be going on to Nationals in Welland. “It takes dozens of volunteers, locals as well as others from the visiting clubs, and help from the township, to put on an event of this size, with races in so many categories,” said Helen Parfitt of the Sydenham Lake Canoe Club, “and it is a fitting end to a very good season for our club and our paddlers.” The regatta runs all day (8am – 6pm) with the popular war canoe races taking place later in the afternoon. “We are hoping to see
locals come along to cheer our Sydenham paddlers as well as paddlers from across the province at any time during the day. It should be an exciting event,” said Parfitt. There may also be a future star in one of the boats. The regatta takes place just after the end of the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg. Sydenham’s Stephanie L’Abbe, who now races for the Ottawa River Canoe Club, won gold in the K2 1000 with partner Lexy Vincent and was part of the gold-medal winning team in the K4 500 and the silvermedal team in the K4 1000. Will the next Stephanie L’Abbe be in one of those 12 and under races at the Point on Saturday? Show up and find out.

Canada 150 Trail day in Sharbot Lake by Jeff Green (with files from Marco Smits – Frontenac County Communications) rganizers of the summer long Central Frontenac Canada 150 celebrations have been working with staff at Frontenac County on a trails event for Sharbot Lake as a celebration of the completion of the K&P trail between Lake Ontario and Sharbot Lake. It turned out that the Trans Canada Trail is celebrating Canada 150 on August 26, and there was funding available to put on events. It seemed like an ideal opportunity to mark the long anticipated, hard fought for, completion of the K&P Trail between Lake Ontario and Sharbot Lake, bringing the trans Canada Trail through Central and South Frontenac. Unfortunately, while construction on that final stretch has begun and the County of Frontenac has agreements in place for all required parcels of land along the rail bed, in some cases the completion of the necessary paperwork to transfer ownership has taken more time than expected. The official opening of the final stretch of the Frontenac K&P Trail from Tichborne to Sharbot Lake has been delayed until the trail is closer to completion. Still, Sharbot Lake will be a hub of trails activity next Saturday, August 26. The gathering will be one of more than 200 celebratory events planned in Canada from coast to coast to coast. The event in Sharbot Lake will be held in partnership with the Trans Canada Trail and the Eastern Ontario Trails Alliance. “I am especially looking forward to this event as it will bring all the various user
O
groups together to celebrate our trails. I encourage everyone to come to Sharbot Lake and be part of it,” said Richard Allen, Manager of Economic Development for the County of Frontenac. “The volunteers who have been running Canada 150 events in Central Frontenac have been doing an amazing job all year and their involvement in this event makes me look forward to it even more,” Allen said. The event will include a participatory el-
ement with opportunities for different trail user groups to be involved. Members of the Napanee and District ATV cub will be gathering at the Kaladar Community Centre at 9:30, to take a trail ride on the Trans-Canada trail to Sharbot Lake. Also at 9:30, cyclists are asked to gather at the caboose in the Railway Park in Sharbot Lake for a 26km ride. Less adventurous cyclists can gather at the Canada bench on the causeway south of the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team at 12:15.
At noon, walkers are asked to gather at the trail crossing at Road 38 in Sharbot Lake. All groups will gather at the caboose at 12:30 when the festivities will start. The gathering will eventually proceed to Oso beach for music, food and games. The best way to plan your participation is by visiting the website of the Central Frontenac Canada 150 Celebrations Committee at https://www.cfcanada150.ca/k-ptrail-day.html.
Dawson takes on Sam McGee with latest CD I by Craig Bakay n this Canada 150 year, you’re probably thinking ‘where can I get some insight into the works of some of Canada’s greatest poets?’ Well, in the Central/North Frontenac area, there happens to be one fellow who’s prepared to help you out with that conundrum — Dave Dawson. Dawson’s latest artistic offering is called Dave Dawson Recites, a CD where he does just that, recites selected works of Robert Service and Dr. Henry Drummond. Service, arguably Canada’s greatest poet, especially when it comes to visions of the North, probably doesn’t need much of an introduction. It’s hard to conceive that any Canadian hasn’t been exposed to him somewhere in school and various other outlets. Is there a more ironically Canadian poem than The Cremation of Sam McGee? (Yes, it’s on the CD, along with The Shooting of Dan McGrew and other Service classics.)
Drummond, perhaps lesser known in popular culture, is nonetheless well thought-of in literary circles, being named a fellow of both the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Society of Literature in the UK. Born in Ireland, he practised medicine in Quebec’s Eastern Townships (which coincidentally Dawson is also from). Perhaps his best known piece is The Last Portage (which is on the CD) as well as a number of pieces featuring Little Batiste (two of which are on the CD, Little Batiste and How Batiste Came Home). At age 84, Dawson shows no signs of slowing down. He retired from installing telephone lines to pursue his artistic interests and now has produced 13 CDs (of his own songs as well as others, most notably Jimmie Rodgers), nine books (six poetry, two of short stories and one novel) as well as numerous painting on canvas, panel, paddles and milk pails. He said his next project is a CD (or two) of his own poems.
The Dave Dawson Recites CD features cover art of his own paintings as well as sketches of Dawson, Service and Drummond by Rose Wilson. The CD is available for $15 by calling Dawson at 613-268-2797.

Visit Cloyne Museum, Benny’s Pond, and the new Park O n Saturday, August 26, everyone is invited to explore in Cloyne – Ponds, Pioneer Days and Parks. The Friends of the Salmon River will host an afternoon event of interest to lovers of nature and history. Have a tour of Benny’s Pond and learn how it is part of the Salmon River watershed. Enjoy tours of the Cloyne Pioneer Museum and the new Benny’s Lake Park. At 1pm, local Glen Pearce will lead the pack to Benny’s Pond behind the museum. He will explain the formation of the string of little lakes/ponds that are all in the line of flow from the headwaters and connect to Beaver Creek, Kennebec Lake and hence to the main channel of the Salmon. Glen Pearce was part of the field crew who mapped these waters. The headwaters are the birthplace and most essential part of any watershed, and these ponds are in the forefront of those headwaters, providing healthy eco-services for the entire Salmon system. Benny’s Lake Heritage Park – just opened – is a collaborative project to re-
store the area where a grove of 200-yearold white pines was destroyed by a major wind storm. Many new pine trees were planted to breathe new life into the park. The Cloyne Pioneer Museum & Archives reflect the history of this area with emphasis on such themes as settlement and pioneer life, mining, logging and tourism. Their staff will provide a tour and gladly answer all your questions. Refreshments will be served and this will be an opportunity for folks to connect and find out more about the Friends of the Salmon River group. Come for a day of nature and history; it’s a free event. On August 26, meet at the Cloyne Museum (14235 Hwy. 41 in Cloyne) at 1pm and stay til 3 or 4pm. Bring your friends to the “Friends of Salmon” gathering and learn more about the top of our beautiful watershed. TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH FRONTeNAC
www.southfrontenac.net LIVING HERE THE 2017–2019 RECYCLING CALENDAR IS ON ITS WAY! WATCH FOR IT IN THE FRONTENAC NEWS, AUGUST 24TH The Township is attempting a more environmentally sustainable approach, rather than direct mail, in distributing the next 2 year Recycling Calendar. The Frontenac News will be delivering the 2017-2019 Recycle Calendar, as an insert, in its August 24th edition which will include Storrington area residents. The Calendar will also be in a PDF format on our website to download to your desktop or print a copy for your fridge. After August 24th copies will be available at both Township offices. We hope that this environmentally friendly method of diversion encourages all residents to remain dedicated to their recycling efforts. It’s up to each one of us to make a difference.
VACATIONING IN SOUTH FRONTENAC? Nothing can compare to a week at the lake and in South Frontenac we have an abundance of clear lakes, beautiful trails and great cycling. The one thing that can dampen your vacation is the unsightly mess of a can or plastic bag floating by or the sounds of wildlife munching happily on garbage that was not properly disposed of. We hope you enjoy your stay but ask that you please regard our Garbage and Recycling policies. Dumping garbage at the side of the road or at the gates of a landfill on a Sunday night is not only unacceptable, it creates a huge problem for Township staff when their time could be better spent elsewhere. Whether you are a cottage owner, renter or day tripper, please become familiar with collection dates and locations, as well as our recycle streams. By all means, take your memories with you but please don’t leave your garbage behind! Any questions; contact Solid Waste Management at 613 376-3027 X 4330
HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DEPOT Summer hours are now in effect at the Depot - Open every Thursday from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm Please remember that accepted items are hazardous materials, small electronics and bale wrap only. A full listing of accepted materials may be found on our website under Living Here/Solid Waste/Recycling/Household Hazardous Waste.

NEWS & PuBLIC NOTICES NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSING – PORTLAND DISTRICT Take notice that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of South Frontenac proposes to pass a by-law to stop up, close and transfer ownership of a Township-owned road allowance as follows: Location: Part of Lot 7, Concession V, District of Portland (Harrowsmith). Reason: The subject portion of road allowance runs east and west from Road 38 to Notre Dame Street in the Village of Harrowsmith. It is 91 metres long and only 4.6 metres wide and it is located along the north side of the subject land whose owner wishes to add it to his property. The proposed road closing will come before Council for consideration at the regular meeting to be held in the Council Chambers, 4432 George Street, Sydenham, on September 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm.For more information see our website or contact Lindsay Mills, Planner at Extension 2221.
NOTICE OF ROAD CLOSING – BEDFORD DISTRICT Take notice that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of South Frontenac proposes to pass a by-law to stop up, close and transfer ownership of a Township-owned road allowance as follows: Location: Part of Lot 18, between Concessions II and III, District of Bedford Reason: The subject portion of road allowance is in two separate parts that, together, constitute only 1,325 feet2. A very unusual property configuration was created in 1968 through a series of land transfers and a Township road allowance ran through the property. Part of the road allowance was closed and transferred by bylaw in 1996 but the by-law did not close two small pieces that still protrude into the subject property. The new proposed road closure and transfer would rectify this. The proposed road closing will come before Council for consideration at the regular meeting to be held in the Council Chambers, 4432 George Street, Sydenham, on September 5, 2017 at 7:00 pm.For more information see our website or contact Lindsay Mills, Planner at Extension 2221.
