t was a full house at Bellrock Hall as the Frontenac Women’s Chorus held their annual Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 3 The event was held by donation and guests were asked to bring along an item for the food bank. The chorus sang a wide array of holiday classics including favourites like “Let it Snow,” “Winter Wonderland” and “Sleigh Ride.” They also covered a number of less known but equally charming classics like the traditional Jewish folk song, “Mi ze Hidlik.” Special guests, Toute Ensemble (Anne Archer, Debbie Twiddy and Melanie Fyfe) and Val Hamilton took the stage for a few special songs throughout the night. The audience was even encouraged to get involved at times and sing along to a few popular holiday classics. Lyrics to songs like “Frosty the Snowman” were provided in
the night’s program for audience members to refer to as they participated in the fun. The beautifully decorated hall made for a cheerful, warm place for the audience to enjoy their favourite holiday tunes. Many of the performers even stuck around after the show to enjoy refreshments and conversation with the audience. The Frontenac Women’s Chorus celebrated their 20year anniversary around a year and a half ago. Director Patty Smith has been with the chorus since last September. She took over the position from Betty Wagner who had previously directed the chorus for approximately 15 years. When accompanist, Kate Van Allen approached her about the directing position, Smith jumped on the opportunity. She had taken directing workshops in Toronto and was looking to branch
out and further widen her music career. “They have been really patient with me,” she says. Smith has been involved with music for most of her life. She grew up with her father playing all different types of music. She started singing lessons at 19 and has been fairly involved in the music community ever since.“I started enjoying choir music as I got older,” she says. “I don’t have as much of a need to be the star performer anymore so it’s kind of fun to just work with a bunch of voices and work to blend them together.” “It’s like being a sculptor… you’re making an aural sculpture out of [the voices],” says Smith. The chorus is made up

People will know you possess this unspeakable joy because you will be a peaceful person that people want to be around. How do we obtain Unspeakable Joy? By opening our hearts to accept the wonderful gift of grace that Jesus gave us when he was born in a stable on that first Christmas. “And now I am coming to
you, I say these things while I am still in the world, so that my joy may be made full and complete and perfect in them (that they experience my delight fulfilled in them, that my enjoyment may be perfected in their own souls, that they may have my gladness within them filling their hearts) John 17:13. Here goes: “How often the sight of a star fills us with delight. It is awesome to stand outside and behold a star-studded night. The stars, it seems, have always called us to greatness. They stir up within us a sense of mystery.

The Frontenac News Christmas Greetings 2016
We are told to follow our star. And yet they sometimes lead us to places we would rather not go. A star marks our paths with light and guides us to deeper insight. With the deeper kind of seeing comes new responsibilities. It is not always easy to follow a star. Long ago three who have been called wise journeyed to the small, insignificant town of Bethlehem. They followed a star that led them to the powerlessness of God lying in a manger. It was the last place on earth one would expect to find the Creator of the stars, yet that is where those beams did shine. We call such a moment an Epiphany. An epiphany is a manifestation of the Divine Presence right in the midst of life. Those who have tried to follow the Creator of the stars often find themselves in the midst of an Epiphany. They are called to follow stars that seem beyond their reach. Once a mother whose son had been murdered saw a star that said, “Forgive.” The star led her to a prison, to the murderer. The light of the star enabled her to discover within her own heart a mercy she didn’t know she possessed. The mercy belonged to the Creator of the stars but it was hers to use when she was in need. She used it well.” Who is your prophetic stargazer? Mine is Ghandi. He fought, (through nonviolent ways) for the poor, for those discriminated against, and for all treated unfairly. And here was a man who as Prime Minister of India was entitled to the best. Each morning before Parliament opened Ghandi cleaned out the toilets in the washrooms. Ghandi believed that in order to lead, one must serve. Ghandi saw a star, which is still shining brightly today, the star of understanding, empathy, and compassion and service. “You must add your own names too. So many people with hearts of courage have had Epiphanies that led them to pathways of light. What is your Epiphany? Where is your sky all shining with stars? And which stars are calling you? • We are blessed to live in a community with so many Stars. Take a look around next time you are out, search them out, find them, and let them lead you to great possibilities. Let the star of others reach into your heart until your star shines for others. • At this time we want to thank a number of our Stars who through their deep sense of service, their compassion, and empathy maybe/are spending time away from their families on Christmas Day. • Thank you Marylin Bolender and Alex Chisholm and your amazing team of volunteers for making Christmas Day very special for many by preparing and serving Christmas Day lunch at the Lions Hall. • Thank you to all the staff and volunteers at Pine Meadow for making Christmas Day special to all who call Pine Meadow home. • Thank you to all first responders who are at the ready to spring into action when and where there is a need. • Thank you to all those who may be busy taking care of our roads. • Blessings to all. There were four teams playing and our team won! We all got presents. What a blast! Greetings from Virgil were read to everyone and there were two Xmas skits. They are always wonderful to see. Then singing of Xmas carols with Ruth on piano (she is Rev Jean Brown’s sister), and to end it all - the big finale getting the picture taken of all the gang. Thank you UCW for a wonderful afternoon. What’s Up in the Night Sky - The Star of Bethlehem by Fred Barrett
Mystery of the Star of Bethlehem T
o track down the celestial event that occurred 2000 years ago that might be interpreted as the Star of Bethlehem, we must have a reasonably accurate idea of when Jesus Christ was born. Theological historians place the birth of Jesus in September or October in 3 or 2 BC. They researched several historical facts derived from biblical accounts in Matthew and Luke to arrive at that date. These facts included the date of the census taken at that time, who was ruling Judea and Syria and the death of Herod in 1 BC. First, it must be noted that in ancient times the word ‘star’ could be interpreted several ways. It could be any bright object that traveled across the sky. We can discount a meteor shower or Supernova as the Star of Bethlehem. Accounts require that the bright object appear in the eastern sky, cross the starry background and move before the Magi to Judea. Meteors travel quickly across the sky and a shower lasts only a short time. No Supernova was reported during the period we are investigating. We can also discount comets because they were considered to be signs of evil and bad omens. That leaves us with planets or groupings of planets to match the biblical description and there are a series of conjunctions that roughly fit our time period. A conjunction is when 2 or more planets and/or stars come close to each other. Matthew relates that the star appeared in the rays of the rising Sun. On August 1, 3 BC, Jupiter rose up in the light of dawn. At 5 AM on August 13th, Jupiter and Venus were very close together. A few days later on the 18th Venus and Mercury appeared at dawn in a conjunction. On September 14th Jupiter was in conjunction with the very bright star Regulus. Jupiter and Venus, the 2 brightest planets in the sky, were so close, they appeared to fuse together. A grand conjunction of planets occurred on August 27th when Jupiter, Mars, Mercury and Venus were a tight bundle at sunrise. By mid October the Magi saw Jupiter above Bethlehem. Jupiter had reached its farthest point west and stood still against the

stars high in the sky above Bethlehem. Many will argue for other astronomical explanations for the Star of Bethlehem. For me, the above series of conjunctions best explains the brightness in the sky that guided the Magi. I have given you an astronomer’s explanation of the sym-

ata released by Kids Help Phone has shown that the period between Boxing Day and New Year Eve calls to its hotline increase by as much as 23%. “For those young people who have had a hard year, or have a challenging home life, this time of year can feel especially difficult, even overwhelming, said Jennifer Murdoch, Associate Vice President, Kids Help Phone. Kids Help Phone is a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week service and receives more than 500 contacts per day over the holidays, many from young people who are in crisis or who have nowhere else to turn. “When kids contact us over the holidays, they are often in a heightened state of crisis. We receive calls from kids who are contemplating suicide, experiencing abuse, kids under pressure or stress who are trying to cope any way they can, and kids who are contemplating self harm,” said Murdoch. “Our counsellors are trained in handling crisis situations are open to any conversation, nothing it off limits.” Kids help can be accessed at 1-800-668-6868. DIY Recycled Christmas Craft : Frontenac News Angels By Chava Field-Green This is a simple craft, that can be adapted to make snow angels, snowpeople, gingerbread people, birds and anything else your heart desires. I like the idea of using old newspapers, flyers or wrapping paper to reuse, but I encourage you to use whatever you like. The Angel chains can be hung up above windows, on a tree, or used to decorate gifts. I’m dedicating them to Jule Koch who loved paper crafts and whose love and determination held the paper together these past 16 years.
3. Repeat twice, you should have a small rectangle.
5. Cut along your lines, making sure not to cut too much on the folded side of the rectangle.
4. Draw the template of one half of a head, one wing, an arm, and a robe. Make sure to have the wings and arm pointing towards the open side of your folds.
6. Using the clear tape, attach rows of angels together, and you're done! You can also add a heart, mouth, ruffles and feathers by making tiny cuts while folded.
Step 1. Cut out one page of the paper, then cut that page in half. (I like folding the two halves at the same time)
You will need: 1 pair of scissors, 1 pencil, clear tape, 1 newspaper or printer paper or any other paper of your choosing
Step 2. Fold page in half lengthwise.
Have a Happy Holiday Let's cherish the spirit of Christmas and the joy of friendship.

John 3:16
T
his is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
B
ut after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ”The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” which means, “God with us.”
W
hen Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. - Matthew 1: 18-24
I
n those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register.
S
o Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for

nd there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
S
uddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
W
hen the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
S
o they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. - Luke 2: 1-19 (The above was prepared by Jule Koch-Brison in 2008 for the Christmas edition that year.)

The Frontenac News Christmas Greetings 2016 Left top - (The angels are looking for baby Jesus) Chloe Kindergarten St. James Major - honourable mention
A Christmas message by Rev. Jean Brown - retired United Church supply clergyperson- Centenary Pastoral Charge n this Christmas season our United Churches of Sharbot Lake and Parham and our area amalgamated churches (Zealand, Oso, Maberly, Oconto, Tichborne, Wagarville, Long Lake ) offer Christmas greetings and hopes that the light and peace of the One born be present to us and guide our Christmas. We spend a lot of fabulous time and effort “getting ready” for Christmas and it’s all ever so much fun as we prepare our hearts and minds and get organized. As a child I recall preparing by anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Eaton's catalogue and when it came we would begin to make out lists of the items we wanted. In fact I learned to read by perusing the Eaton's catalogue. I'm embarrassed to say we would even write down the page number and the item number and long for that gift. My Mom would get so annoyed with us and remind us of the spiritual aspects of Christmas. Thankfully she persevered and we finally caught on. As children we thought that Christmas was about the gifts we would receive, however we finally learned that it’s not our birthday- it’s not about the gifts that we receive, rather it’s about the spiritual gifts of Christmas and the re-birth of the Christ child in our hearts. Somehow we have blown Christmas out of proportion by continuing to disregard the true religious meaning of the event- the two frightened ill-prepared young folks responding to God and taking on a huge assignment. Somehow we have concentrated on the gifts of the wise men and in giving gifts rather than responding to the willingness of the wise men to follow a star and to set out on an unexpected journey into the unknown- not always knowing where they were headed, but knowing that God would guide them onward. Somehow we have forgotten that the Holy Child was born in a simple manger- with no decorations, lights, tinsel or comforts, and instead we have filled up our empty spaces with excess rather than with our God. So in this Christmas and new year- may we like the Holy family be willing and prepared to trust in God for whatever the future holds or brings. May we lead with our vulnerabilities and offer our uncertainties to God. May our list of things to prepare diminish, and may our faith increase and may God bless us all in this effort. "Merry Christmas".

A Granny’s Christmas Wish If I were ol’ Santa, you know what I’d do? I’d dump silly gifts that are given to you, and deliver some things just inside your front door, things you have lost, but treasured before.
I’d give you back all your maidenly vigor, and, to go along with it, a neat tiny figure. Then restore the old colour that once graced your hair, before rinses and bleaches took residence there. I’d bring back the shape with which you were gifted, so things now suspended need not be uplifted. I’d draw in your tummy and smooth down your back, ‘till you’d be a dream in those tight fitting slacks. I’d remove all your wrinkles and leave only one chin, so you wouldn’t spend hours rubbing grease on your skin. You’d never have flashes or queer dizzy spells, and you wouldn’t hear noises like ringing of bells. No sore aching feet and no corns on your toes, no searching for glasses when they’re right on your nose. Not a shot would you take in your arm, hip or fanny, from a doctor who thinks you’re a nervous old granny. You’d never have headaches, so no pills would you take, and no heating pad needed since your muscles won’t ache. Yes, if I were ol’ Santa, you’d never look stupid, you’d be a cute little chick with the romance of cupid. I’d put a smile on your face when those wolves start to whistle, and the joys of your heart would be light as a thistle. But alas! I’m not Santa, I’m simply just me getting older myself, as it’s plain to see. I wish I could tell you all the symptoms I’ve got, but I’m due at my doctor’s for an estrogen shot. Even though we’ve grown older, this wish is sincere: Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year! (Submitted by Linda McKenzie)

Maple Vanilla Baked Pears
Serves 8 (or 4 because I don’t like to share!) Ingredients: 4 Anjou Pears ½ cup Maple Syrup (Use good local stuff!) ½ teaspoon Cinnamon 1 tablespoon Vanilla 1 cup granola Yoghurt or Ice Cream (Do what ever you want, I’m not the boss of you!) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350f. Find a baking sheet in that crazy baking sheet cupboard. I’d suggest you use some parchment paper, because nobody wants to have a hard time cleaning up when it’s dessert time! 2. Slice your pears in half and then cut a little off the skin side so they’ll lay nice and flat. Use a melon baller (or a teaspoon) and core out the pears. Place pears face up on your baking sheet, sprinkle the cinnamon over top (they’ll look better if you don’t try to get it too evenly!) 3. Mix your maple syrup with your vanilla. Save some of it for the end and drizzle the rest on the pears. 4. Bake pears for about 25-30 minutes. (In my experience, all ovens are different and so are most pears, the last time I made these it took about 40 minutes! Start them early, they can always be heated up again! In fact, you can do these a few days ahead of when you need them! 5. Throw some granola on them, put them on a plate with some yoghurt or ice cream, drizzle your maple vanilla over top of everything and enjoy!
As we open our hearts and homes this season, we welcome in the joy of the holidays. Thanks for your valued business.

”tis better to give than receive…” T
he story you are about to read is true. No names have been changed to protect anyone’s privacy. It reveals a truth that has lasting effects. As a newly-divorced father of three girls ages 14, 12 and 3, living in a small town of barely 4,000, I was fretting over how I would financially make our first Christmas as a new family unit a happy one. Christmas day beginning at noon, the girls would spend the holiday with their mother; but how do I make Christmas Eve a joyful time? Bribing them by saying: “how many children get to have TWO Christmases” seemed rather lame. I purchased a “Charlie Brown” tree a few days earlier and we trimmed the tree in our best tradition: a few ornaments purchased at the local hardware store for under $3.00; zoo animals collected over the years; two rows of mini-lights, one that twinkled; several strings of fresh-popped popcorn and much more popcorn in our collective tummies; and tinsel, lots of silvery, shiny tinsel. No presents were under the tree, just a special tree blanket left over from my marriage. The girls knew Santa always came on Christmas Eve, after I had gone to bed. They knew because I was as surprised as the girls were on early Christmas morns, seeing the small bounty beneath the decorated fir. This particular December 23, I felt rather depressed about facing a Christmas without a mother and a wife. Appropriate music was filling our home during the afternoon, and snow fell in that storybook way, light, fluffy and gentle. The Briard dog, and cats, curled up in their favorite spots, doing what they did every day, enjoying their worry-free lives. One of my daughters suggested we should go caroling. And a tradition was started. Not wanting to disturb people during their suppers, a little after 7 pm. we donned our winter togs, found some sheet music, leashed up the dog and tromped across the kneehigh snow (we were not aware of the caroling etiquette of using the sidewalks, this was our first time!) to John and Katie’s house next door.
John was the head of the local High School’s History department and his white/gray beard, balding pate and deep gravelly voice brought instant respect from the students. But we knew him like Wilson from “Home Improvement”! None of my daughters had the courage to knock on the door, so I took the lead and rapped firmly. John was very surprised to see the family outside his home and I told him we wanted to sing a carol for him. His wife Katie joined him wearing a bulky, wool sweater protected by a well-stained apron and our little choir broke out into song; tentatively at first, and then full throttle by the last chorus. The smiles from Katie and John grew larger with each verse. I could see John’s eyes roving back and forth over my daughters and the gruff teacher melted away to a satisfied senior, relishing a rare moment. Four hands clapped in genuine appreciation as my daughters and I turned to go, happily shouting “Merry Christmas”. We sang at three more

houses before returning home to hot chocolate and flannel pjs. The girls sat around the kitchen table, with bright red cheeks, hands clasping their warm mugs. They chatted excitedly about the faces of the folks they had just entertained. The conversation was animated, happy and joyous. I noticed the reaction of the people we had just sung for. They, too, had been given an unexpected gift: a gift of time, a gift of song and a gift of peace. In that moment I realized that what my parents had tried to instill in me as a young boy, had come full circle. In a strange, but simple way, the gift of giving was the greater gift. Our caroling tradition continued for another 10 years. The original circle of four grew to 22 adults and children. At reunions the talk invariably recounts ‘the time when the Llewellyns caroled around the neighborhood.’ No financial burden; no emotional stress; no “keeping up with the Joneses” anxiety. Laughter, song, comraderie and love! Christmas memories, that’ll snap you out of a depressing funk! (submitted by Lionel Llewellyn, retired grandad of three daughters and two granddaughters)

Christmas Holiday Day Remembered The Christmas holiday had so many jolly days with bands parading throughout the town. The Christmas holidays had so many folly days with rooftop icicles hanging down. The traffic hurried and people scurried with snow-capped street lamps to guide their way,
voices singing, church bells ringing, the angel faces came out to play. The Christmas holidays had so many merry days with salutations sent through the mail. The Christmas holidays had so many cherry days, cranberries and popcorn by the pail. Dreaming, young hearts believing, our Shortbread cookies scattered on a tray, The hour was nearing, the elves were cheering, Santa’s reindeer were on their way. The Christmas holidays had so many swirly days, snowflakes dancing into the air. The Christmas holidays had so many twirly days with frozen ice drops inside our hair. The trees were brimming with sparkle trimming, beneath the boughs the presents lay, hugs with kisses and yule-tide wishes to celebrate our Christmas day. (submitted by Susan Elizabeth Radford)

Cooking, Smoking and Alcohol – A Dangerous Mix Central Frontenac Township – With the holiday season upon us, we are entering one of the most festive times of the year. But it can also be a deadly time of the year. The Central Frontenac Fire & Emergency Services is urging everyone to pay special attention when cooking during the holidays, and to drink responsibly. Provincial statistics reveal that careless cooking is the number one cause of fires and the second leading cause of fatal fires. “The hustle and bustle of the holidays can dramatically increase your risk of having a fire,” said Fire Chief Bill Young. “All too often, these fires are started by unattended cooking and in many cases alcohol is involved.” Smoking is another leading cause of fires during the holiday season. “Make sure smokers extinguish cigarettes in large deep ashtrays – not in plant pots which may contain peat moss or shredded bark that can easily ignite,” continued Chief Bill Young. “Ashes should be emptied in a metal container – not the garbage can – and put outside.”
& Happy Holidays!

The Central Frontenac Fire & Emergency Services also is reminding everyone about the law requiring working smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Take a few minutes to test your smoke alarms and make sure everyone in the home knows exactly what to do if the smoke alarms sound in an emergency. Develop and practice a home escape plan with everyone in the home. Enjoy a fire safe holiday season by following these tips: • Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Cooking is a major cause of home fires, so don’t leave the kitchen if there’s something cooking on the stove. If a pot catches fire, don’t try to move it. Cover the pot with a lid to smother the flames and turn off the burner. • Keep things that can burn such as cooking utensils and paper towels a safe distance from the stove as they can easily ignite if they are too close. • Keep an eye on any drinkers in your household and make sure all cigarettes are properly extinguished and the stove is off before going to bed. • Cigarettes can smoulder among upholstered items for hours before igniting. Check sofas and chairs for cigarettes that may have fallen between the cushions. Provide large, deep ashtrays for smokers. • Drink responsibly. Excessive alcohol consumption is a contributing factor in many residential fires. • Install and maintain working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms outside all sleeping areas of the home. Smoke alarms also are required on every storey. Failure to comply with the smoke and carbon monoxide alarm requirements can result in a ticket for $360 or a fine of up to $50,000 for individuals and $100,000 for corporations. • Develop and practice a home escape plan with everyone in the home.
