Kids of Steel test their mettle at Sharbot Lake Triathlon by Julie Druker lose to 110 youngsters put their pedals to the metal at the Kids of Steel Triathlon at Oso beach in Sharbot Lake on July 28. The event, which saw its fair share of blood, sweat and tears plus lots of smiles and friendly camaraderie, was brought back after an eight-year hiatus by Greg Kealey, founder of the Bytown Storm Triathlon Club based out of Ottawa. Kealey, whose organization runs other similar events in and around the Ottawa area, decided to bring the Kids of Steel back to Sharbot Lake by establishing it as a new series for his club in Eastern Ontario. Sharbot Lake is a classic venue and a great location”’ Kealey said when I spoke to him at the beach on Sunday morning. “There’s clean water, a great trail, a great park and the community is behind the event 100%.” Kealey initially approached Rudy and Joan holding the event again. The couple had helped run the triathlon years ago, and they encouraged Kealey and put him in touch with staff at the township office to get the approval and cooperation he needed. Both Rudy and Joan said that they were thrilled to see the event back, and Joan was the official Triathlon Ontario referee on Sunday. Kealey and his team of 30 volunteers were happy about the turnout for a forst year event. “We were hoping to see 70 registrants but close to 110 signed up, so we are really
C
pleased with the turn out,” he said. Participants traveled from as far away as Ottawa, Toronto, Whitby and Peterborough, and a handful of local youngsters from Sharbot Lake, Maberly and Harrowsmith also took part. Kealey said the event, especially for the younger participants, is designed to instill a “passion for an active lifestyle and to encourage them to take up swimming, running and biking.” The day’s races ranged in length from the longest - a 400 metre swim, 10 km bike ride and 4 km run for the older 15 and 16-yearold athletes, to the shortest race - a 50 metre swim, 1.5 km bike ride and 500 metre run for the 6 and 7-year-olds, the youngest participants. For the older athletes, aged 14 and 15, it was a more serious day due to the fact that the event is a qualifying race for the Ontario Summer Games, which will take place in 2014 in Welland, Ontario. By the end of the day, six athletes from the Frontenac and Ottawa regions qualified for those games. I had a chance to speak to local participants, 11-year-old Oliver Bell and 13-yearold Tilda Bron of the Sharbot Lake area. Their father is Dr. Peter Bell of the Sharbot Lake Family Health Team, and he helped prepare them for the triathlon. Both were first-time participants, though Tilda vaguely remembered participating eight years ago when she was just four years old.
Another enthusiastic participant was 10year-old Gabe Ferron-Bouius of Ottawa, a para-athlete and member of the Bytown Storm Troopers Triathlon team, who trains with Kealey. Gabe has participated in three Kids of Steel races since he began training with Kealey’s club in February this year. He has a half prosthetic leg below his right knee and swims the water portion of the race without his prosthetic leg. His dad will then carry him from the water to a chair, where he puts on his leg and runs to the transition zone to complete the biking and running portion of the event. Gabe was all smiles as he waited for his event to start and, asked if feels he is more challenged than most, he replied that swimming with one leg gives him an added advantage. He said that training for and running triathlons puts him in great shape for his favorite sport - hockey. Over 30 volunteers assisted at the Sunday triathlon. The local OPP helped man the highway and stopped traffic for the bike portion of the race, the sole portion of the triathlon that took place on Road 38. With such a good turnout for the reborn Kids of Steel Triathlon, Kealey said that he sees it continuing annually from now on and sees it growing as long as the community responds favorably. Judging by how the day unfolded, the community’s reaction was very positive indeed. Gabe Ferron-Bouius of Ottawa
Arden Road man shot dead by police Bob Srigley had a history of altercations with OPP Staff ate Thursday afternoon Bob Srigley was shot by police officers who attended his home on Arden Road shortly after a 911 call was made by Frontenac News staff. He died at Kingston General Hospital on Sunday Night at 7:48 pm. “A 45-year-old man involved last week in an interaction with Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers in Central Frontenac succumbed to his injuries yesterday evening. Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to probe the circumstances surrounding his death,” said a press release from the SIU on Monday. The preliminary information that the SIU has gathered indicates that police attended Mr. Srigley’s residence at 5:20 pm on Thursday, and “during the interaction between OPP officers and a male at the residence, police firearms were discharged and the man was struck multiple times.” In a press release on Thursday, the OPP alleged that “When officers arrived, they were confronted by an armed male. Shots were fired” Srigley was transported to Kingston General Hospital where he underwent surgery on Thursday evening. The SIU have assigned 5 investigators and two forensic officers to the case. At this point they have designated two of the OPP officers who were involved in the shooting as “subject officers” and six other OPP members as “witness officers”. 911 call: On Thursday afternoon at about

He told the News that he suffered from broken ribs, a damaged kidney, and other injuries. An investigation into the incident was headed up by Detective Sergeant Mark Allison, of the Professional Standards Division of the OPP in Kingston. In the end, the Crown attorney’s office decided not to lay any charges against OPP officers Brown and Johnson, who had been the subject of Allison’s investigation. “Consultation was sought with the Crown Attorney. It is the Crown Attorney’s opinion that based on the evidence; there is no reasonable prospect of conviction of either Mr. Brown or Mr. Johnston in relation to the offences of assault causing bodily harm ... The investigation is now closed,” wrote Sergeant Allison to Srigley in early March. Since then, Bob Srigley has repeatedly contacted the News, seeking further help in publicising his ongoing health issues and the difficulty he said he was having with the day to day maintenance of his property. He was also seeking financial support from the public to enable him to undertake a private prosecution of the OPP for how his incident was handled. A few weeks ago he was informed that the OPP Complaints Commission was looking into his case. A small item, “Arden man pursuing his case” was published in the Frontenac News on this matter on July 18. (Note: In two press releases from the SIU, it was stated erroneously that the fatal shooting took place on Crotch Lake. The SIU has been informed of the error.)

THE FRONTENAC NEWS
august 1, 2013
The new kid on the Central Frontenac block H
e’s not exactly new to municipal governance, or to Eastern Ontario, and experience is exactly what Central Frontenac Council was looking for when searching for a new CAO this past spring. After a revolving door scenario for 6½ years, Larry Donaldson’s regional experience and history may be exactly what Central Frontenac needs. “When I first met the staff, on my first day on the job, the only question that was asked was if I was planning on staying,” he said from his office in Sharbot Lake early this week. Larry Donaldson was raised in the Village of Lanark, where his mother still lives. His father, Ray Donaldson, a well-known guitarist and pedal steel player, died this past February. Larry went to public school at Maple Grove, and high school at PDCI. He then attended Carleton University and for two summers he worked for the City of Nepean. He also started working part-time for Nepean during the school year as well. When he graduated he was hired on by Nepean as a bylaw officer. Three years later, he went to Kanata, also as a bylaw officer, and eventually took over as manager of the Bylaw and Licensing department. His last job at Kanata was as the city clerk for a year and a half, before municipal amalgamation took place and Kanata became part of Ottawa. Donaldson then took on the clerk-administrator’s job in the newly formed Municipality of Hastings Highlands, and 10 months later moved to the Town of Arnprior as Chief Administrative Officer. He worked in Arnprior for 10 years, until the fall of 2011, when he was let go. At the time, Arnprior’s relatively newly elected mayor, David Reid said, “We determined we wanted a new voice, a new start. Larry has a lot of skills, a lot of knowledge. Some-

times you need fresh blood.” Within weeks, the CAOs in two other Renfrew County municipalities were let go as well, leading one local paper to run the headline “Bad month for area municipal CAOs” Larry Donaldson lives in Stittsville with his wife Tammy and two teenage children. He has no plans to leave Stittsville until his children finish high school, but after that he might mover closer to Sharbot Lake. “Tammy has worked for Lanark County in Perth for the last 20 years, and we own land near the Village of Lanark, so we can look at that when the time comes.” The fact that Sharbot Lake is within commuting distance from his current home was part of the reason he sought the job as CAO for Central Frontenac. “I also looked into the organisation itself, understood there had been amalgamation and where it probably stands in terms of amalgamation, and thought it would be a good fit,” he said. Central Frontenac is similar in some ways to Hastings Highlands, where he worked 12 years ago. “The lands and rivers, the natural environment is a huge draw in Central Frontenac, and it’s similar to Hastings Highlands in that the population doubles in the summer. I know that some commercial investment would help diversify the tax base and bring jobs, but I also know about the challenges that rural municipalities face,” he said. Central Frontenac is in the middle of a services review that is being conducted by the accounting firm KPMG, and Donaldson sees this as a good time to start off as CAO. “The results of that review will give direction to Council in terms of how to proceed, and the decision council makes in light of that will give me a sense of what they want me to focus on,” he said From his experience in the municipal world, Larry Donaldson knows that it is a political environment, and every four years the entire direction of council can change. One of his priorities is assuring that sound operational policies are in place in the municipality.

Effective September 1, 2013 the recycling collection schedule will change for some South Frontenac residents. The change involves the alternating schedule in which there will be two consecutive ‘Yellow – Paper etc.’ weeks. The August schedule for the ‘Central’ side of the Recycling calendar ends on a ‘Yellow’ week and then the new September schedule begins on a ‘Yellow’ week as well. This change will simplify and make the recycling schedule more efficient for our residents. So, as of September 1st all South Frontenac residents will be on the same schedule and this should eliminate any confusion residents may have about which side of the calendar they should be viewing. The new 2013-2014 Recycling Calendar is viewable on our website and also can be picked up at our Public Works office at 2490 Keeley Rd during business hours.

Larry Donaldson “The end goal is to have policies in place that cover 99% of what happens on a daily basis. The more we can deal with by way of policies, the fewer surprises there are; the more predictable things are.” After years where the only predictable aspect of their CAO situation has been that they will call John Duchene back from retirement once a year, Central Frontenac Council is looking forward to some of the predictability Larry Donaldson intends to bring.

Watkins hits the roof over solar microFIT project NF Council July 29
by Jeff Green here were two items on the agenda at a special meeting of North Frontenac Council on Monday night (July 29). The first was relatively non-controversial, an amendment to the township’s procurement bylaw. The bylaw currently calls for bidding contractors to purchase performance bonds when bidding on contracts in excess of $100,000. This has become a problem because the engineering work for the Mississippi Bridge project will cost about $200,000 and the engineering firms who have looked at the RFP for engineering work are not willing to bid on it because of the cost of the performance bonds. Treasurer Angela Millar said, in a report to Council, that when she asked a number of other municipal treasurers, including Marian VanBruinessen at Frontenac County and the Treasurer from the City of Thunder Bay, they said they had not asked for bonding for en-

Letter To North Frontenac taxpayers
I
t is with great frustration that I write this letter to the editor. A meeting was held on Monday night and a motion was passed to go ahead with a green energy program that will invest your property tax money into solar panels. At our July 2 meeting this motion was voted down and the green energy program was put to rest. Then out of nowhere, I find this matter back on an agenda for a special unplanned meeting on Monday, July 29. Yes, it is important to find an alternative energy to help conserve, but to have it come out of the taxpayers’ pocket is where my objections begin. To suggest that a community, where the majority of the taxpayers are senior citizens, should invest in a program that will not see any payback in their lifetime is ludicrous. We are a township that should be investing property tax dollars into maintenance of this township. I do not agree with spending property tax dollars on investments that may or may not pay off someday in my grandchild’s lifetime. If you agree with anything I have mentioned here, please contact your local councilor and mayor to voice your concerns. Councillor Lonnie Watkins
gineering on large projects. SINCE 1970 Council passed an amendment to their procurement bylaw excepting engineering work from the bonding requirement. While this will make it more viable for engineering firms to bid on the Mississippi Bridge, the project will not likely get underway in earnest this year. The township has been informed by phone that the project will receive provincial funding and was told to proceed with engineering work, but it has not been formally announced by the Government of Ontario. It is expected be a 2014 project. Solar project returns, and is approved The second item on the agenda proved to be a lot more controversial, even though the outcome was never in doubt. Last month, by a 3-3 vote, council decided, at the last possible opportunity, not to enter into a contract for a Solar photovoltaic microFIT project on the roof of the township administrative building/garage. The project had been accepted by the Ontario Power Authority (OPA), and even with a cost of $12,000 to shore up the roof of the building, the project cost of $56,741 will re-

n the article “Catch 22 – North Frontenac Style”, July 25, 2013, I should point out that not all of the add-ons that North Frontenac has allowed to remain are pre-made addons. At the Loon’s Call Campground and Resort there are add-ons that are NOT manufactured. Ours are similar to these. Also the agreement to settle that we signed with the township allows us to modify or alter our addons to be in compliance. Seeing as how the township is aware, charges taxes and has allowed others to keep their add-ons, we are simply asking to be treated the same. Tim Lawlor

sult in revenue of over $100,000 over the 20-year life of the contract with the OPA - a return of 7.4% per year. It will take 12 years for the initial investment to be paid off, followed by 8 years of profit. At their regular meeting last week (July 22) a notice of motion asking that the matter be reconsidered was approved, and on Monday night, with six members of Council present, it was immediately clear that four of them, Mayor Clayton, Deputy Mayor Perry, and Councilors Inglis and Hunter, all were going to support the motion to reverse council’s decision. Councilors Martin and Watkins were still opposed to the project, and Councilor Good, who had voted against it the first time around, was not at the meeting. In the first go-round, on July 2, Councilor Inglis was not present, and the project was defeated in a 3-3 tied vote. With the prospect of a reversal staring them in the face, Councilor Watkins literally jumped out of his chair to voice his opposition. “Let me do this,” he said as he moved from his chair around the table to the face council as if he was a ratepayer addressing council. “Let’s pretend I’m a taxpayer. Sell me on this,” he said. “If you could invest money and make 7% interest, would you do it,” asked Fred Perry. “Not on this,” said Watkins, “Ontario people have to make up the excess cost.” Gerry Martin then said, “I think you are raping the citizens by doing this. It is coming from people who pay for hydro. It doesn’t make any economic sense. I don’t think we

should add to this.” The MicroFIT program is designed to encourage small scale solar projects on rooftops and stand alone structures by paying a guaranteed premium price for the power that is generated over a 20-year contract. The projects produce a small percentage of Ontario’s power needs. The premium paid for the power is not subsidised by tax incentives from the province. It is however, worked into the overall price that the Ontario Power Authority charges for power to residents. In a 4-2 vote, council reversed its earlier decision and the solar MicroFIT will be installed by early November.

We’ve been hearing for years that a needle-free injection device will soon be on the market. Well, the scientists at MIT have developed one which delivers a microscopically thin stream of medicine under high pressure through the skin and into the tissue. It is still being tested but hopefully will be available in a year or two. There appears to be a link between the amount of sugar we consume and our bIood pressure. One easy way of cutting sugar consumption is to reduce the number of sugar-drinks you consume daily. Even reducing by one can help. Reducing our daily calorie intake can produce a multitude of health benefits. Start today. It’s always interesting to read about how health affected some famous people. Beethoven, for example, used fewer higher notes in his later compositions as his deafness increased. Analyses of his string quartets found he used fewer notes above G in his later quartets because he couldn’t hear them. In England, more and more people are successfully quitting smoking. The National Health Services Stop Smoking program in 2011-12 reported that 800,000 people set a quit date, with 49% being successful, which is a 5% increase in success from 2010-11 and a whopping 235% increase over 2001-02. It can be done. Pharmacists can help smokers quit with smoking cessation programs. We’d love to talk to you about what’s available to help you with your decision to stop. You and your family won’t regret it.

Volunteer for Friends of Salmon River F or more than nine years the Friends of the Salmon River have worked at safeguarding the Salmon River Watershed and providing information for residents and visitors about conservation and healthy river practices. They are a grassroots organization – a group of volunteers who live near or visit the Salmon River and enjoy the watershed. Organized since 2004, the annually elected board of 10 members meets regularly to identify environmental issues related to the river and its watershed. In doing so, they initiate projects – often with other partner groups – in an effort to protect and promote the natural beauty and pristine features of the watershed. The Friends have access to excellent resource people and they use that knowledge to recommend care for the river and forge new connections that nurture the watershed and its communities. · Despite the rain clouds looming and mosquitoes biting viciously, the Arden and Wesleyan Church BBQ was a great success. Vernon Scott wishes to thank Boyd Tryan for his barbequing skills; Don Oliver for the loan of his huge generator; the performers and especially the crowd, for their attendance. As he explained, this was a chance for the village to gather for a time of fellowship, good food and excellent music. · The village has been abuzz with the events of last Thursday evening on the Arden Road. It’s unfortunate, that despite email alerts to the various news agencies by numerous people, no one seemed to be able to correctly identify where Arden was. Maybe we should mail a bunch of Land o’Lakes maps to them · On Mon. Aug. 5, the Henderson United Church will be hosting a luncheon and silent auction at the Henderson hall from 11:45 am to 1 pm. A variety of musicians will be performing for the crowd’s pleasure. This is an annual fundraising event. Come join in and maybe you will be able to start your Christmas shopping early. · The annual Kennebec Lake General meeting will take place Sat. Aug. 10 at the community centre. The schedule is as follows: displays 9:30 am; business meeting 10:30 am; and 12:15 pm lunch. Topics of discussion will include an update on the MacIntosh Perry development, the KLA stewardship plan, septic tank re-inspection and the Arden revitalization. For information call Terry Kennedy at 613-335-3606. · The Arden Legion’s annual George Parks Pig Roast will be held on Sat. Aug. 10, 5-8pm; adults $12; children 10 yrs & under $8. 613-335-2737; tickets available at the Legion. · On Sun. Aug. 11 there will be a Union Service at the Arden United Church at 10am. This will be Rev. Barbara’s last service here in Arden and we encourage all of the church family to attend to wish her good luck in her future endeavours. · Don’t forget the large consignment auction sponsored by the Arden Stewards, August 24. Call Wayne Carrothers for more information at 613-335-2877.

· Henderson and area are hopping with activities, action and suppers. The Harlowe Hall recently served a roast beef dinner (Community Centre hosting); then Community and Social Services hosted a roast pork dinner, and on Aug. 7 the Orange Lodge are serving a roast beef dinner at the Harlowe Hall- Wow!! The North of Seven Cooks are fantastic for sure. Then on Saturday night folks really “shook a leg” at the Harlowe dance- twirling and grooving to beat the band. All report having a real hoot and a holler. · On holidays this year I met up with my childhood friends Marilyn and Steve Hill who have written a thought provoking book (“The Luke 10 Manual”). We were all at Manitoulin Island at the same time this year- for the first time in 25 or more years. Marilyn and Steve are charismatic evangelists, and we attended both public and high school together. We've lived out our faith in vastly different ways, but continue to enjoy serving God each and every day. · Joyce and Reuben Lemke are enjoying the company of their whole family visiting for an entire week. · Comings and goings this week included Mitchel Gurnsey of Sydenham visiting family in the area. · Special thinking of you to my former neighbour Vera Steele, whose spouse Ralph is in Village Green Nursing Home. Vera broke her wrist recently, but is on the mend.
operate with the Stewardship Councils of Frontenac, Lennox & Addington, and Hastings, as well as Quinte Conservation and other like-minded groups interested in the watershed. The Friends are currently working on a history of the Salmon Watershed, a shoreline restoration program, a watershed education program in local schools, a mussel survey project, and other initiatives. If you live near the Salmon River or one of the watershed lakes, you already have a special interest in the care and maintenance of this magnificent environment. The Friends welcome you and your family to join the Friends of the Salmon River to show support for this gem of a watershed. With a little effort, together we can protect the watershed so that we can enjoy clean water, recreational opportunities, and all the Salmon River and its watershed have to offer - for generations to come. For anyone who would like to take a step beyond an individual or family membership, the board of directors of the Friends of the Salmon River invites you to join as a volunteer board member - to meet with the group every other month and share your experience, knowledge and opinions. No special background is required; primarily a strong interest in a healthy river system and watershed. For further information: Please contact Digger MacDougall at 613-446-2734; digger. macdougall@sympatico.ca. Elections to the new board will take place in October. www.friendsofsalmonriver.ca

Clow James Oliver March 3, 1928 - July 26, 2013 With saddened hearts, we announce the passing of Jim on Friday, July 26th, 2013. Jim’s final days were spent surrounded by love offered from family and friends whose lives he had touched so deeply. Beloved husband of the late Thelma Stinson. Much loved father of Beth Lowery (Ralph), Karen Oswald (Peter), Tom Clow (Crystal) Teresa Manion (Dean) Lynda Clow (Oliver). Hero of Heroes to his grandchildren and great grandchildren Nathan, Jeremy, Sarah, Jenna, Jordan, Jami, Jason, Luke, Darcy and James, Great grandchildren Zack, Cali, Jackson, Tristan N, Tristan C and Remi. He is survived by his brothers Harold (Jay), Robert, (Marjory), Charles (Donna), Doug, and sisters Vivian Hannah (the late Fred) and Martha McConnell (Roy). Jim was a tireless worker, giving freely of himself to his family and his community. Jim’s passions were family, the railroad, electrical work and hunting. Hunting season was Jim’s favourite time of year and whether they came home with or without game it didn’t matter. It was just a great time to be with his brothers. He was a member of the Parham Oddfellows and Rebeccas Lodge and spent many enjoyable Friday evenings working at the bingo games. Our family would like to acknowledge the staff of Kingston General Hospital Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit Kidd 2 for their excellent care and compassion to all of us. In keeping with Jim’s wishes cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Goodfellows Funeral Home Parham. The family received friends at the funeral home Wednesday July 31st 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial service will be held in the funeral home Thursday August 1st, 1 p.m. For those who wish, Memorial Donations may be made to Parham Oddfellows/Rebeccas lodge or to Parham United Church in memory of Jim. Good old-fashioned Rock and Roll in Verona N by Julie Druker
ot many top notch rock and rollers can claim to have been making music back when rock and roll was born close to six decades ago. But that is the case for the band The Monarchs, whose average band member age is roughly 68.5 years. Their age is no way a detriment to the sound the band produces - a tightly knit classic rock and roll all cover band, who seem as at ease cranking out classic '50s doo- whop hits as well as cool, unnerving classic surfer tunes like Pipe Line and Wipe Out. The Monarchs consists of four players: Donny Candon on rhythm guitar/vocals; Peter Bebee on lead guitar/vocals; Gary Tisdale on drums/vocals; and Wayne Sweet on bass/vocals. The four play solely covers and their repertoire included numerous Elvis classics like The Wonder of You, Can't Help Falling in Love, America's Horse With No Name, The Hollies' Long Cool Woman, Eddy Rabitt's The Wanderer plus Chubby Checker's The Twist and many, many more. The musicians are each more than capable as soloists on lead guitar, drums and bass, with each playing their fair share of top notch solos. Guitarist Donny Cordon and
bass player Wayne Sweet carried most of the lead vocals with ease and to great effect and each band member also assisted in the many four part harmonies, which are what make their early '50s repertoire so classic. The Monarchs fit in perfectly with the outdoor summer concert series that the Verona Community Association has been offering up free for music lovers. The crowd of 100 listeners ate up the Monarchs' music and two young toddlers could not keep themselves from dancing up a storm. Listeners also had a chance to take home some of the band's classic sounds in their latest CD recorded this year titled "Pub Night". Those who missed the concert have no fear. The Monarchs will be performing at the upcoming Verona Cattail Festival on August 10 and 11. The final concert in the VCA's McMullen beach free concert series will be the gospel group Faithful Friends on Sunday August 25 from 1-3 pm, with the VCA BBQ beginning at noon. In case of inclement weather, the concert will take place indoors at the Verona Lions Hall on Verona Sand Road.

the nature that inspires their work. This year many newbies joined the ranks of the veterans in a show that continues to attract art lovers and connoisseurs from near and far. Margi McInnis Laurin was one such newbie and she had on display numerous acrylic works, each of which has as their focal point a bright red canoe or parts thereof. The inspiration for Margi's pictures are two canoes, both her own. The first, an old red Huron Canoe made by Eaton's, is the same model canoe that her father purchased for her mother years ago. The second is one that she built herself at a 10-day workshop in Huntsville, a cedar strip canoe modeled after an EH Gerrish. After getting the second canoe home, Margi decided to paint it red and it was then that inspiration struck. “I hadn't painted pictures for years and the canoe brought me right back to painting.” Margo works from several photos that she takes of her boats. “I'm trying to get the boats from different angles because although a canoe seems a simple shape, it is quite complex and there is a lot of math involved.” Her paintings are in no way subtle; are all very bright and very direct. In a leaflet she hands out at her booth she states, “A red canoe is such a Canadian icon and I am not the first to paint it and without a doubt, will not be the last.” For those who prefer nature on a grand-

er, more epic scale Leonard Carlyle Skinner, another newbie to the show, had large oil canvases that viewers could easily lose themselves in on display. Skinner, who lives in Odessa, was trained at Sheridan College in Oakville and has been painting professionally for 22 years. His all-Canadian landscapes, though graphically realistic, also have a touch of post-impressionism as demonstrated by his choice of colours. In his work titled “Maples”, an unworldly and impossible yellow sky is the backdrop for a stand of bright red and orange maples that line an azure blue waterfront. It is Skinner’s unique use of colour that make his paintings stand out. “I like to paint epics and though I paint Canadian landscapes, if something is missing I have no trouble romanticizing things.” Further on at the show I came across A.J. Van Drie, an abstract landscape artist whom I visited with years back when he was just starting out as a new painter on the local scene. Van Drie, who is Chippewa by birth and who was adopted, graduated from the Haliburton School of Fine Arts and began painting as a way to identify more with his birth parents after their deaths. He continues to create landscapes reminiscent of native

ine Meadow is very proud to introduce our special club of extraordinary residents. Left to right is Jack Taylor, Elsie Snider and Andy Armstrong. Jack turned 100 on April 13; Elsie was 101 on January 24; and Andy just had his 100th birthday on July 20, making them all one very special group of residents! Jack came all the way from Newfoundland where he spent most of his years. Elsie grew up in Northbrook, later moving to Cloyne after she married, and Andy grew up in and resided most of his life in Plevna. All of them have had lots of common experiences, from growing up without any hydro, telephone or television, to living in a world of computers, ipods and internet! They have seen it all!

· Driveway paving fraud: On July 23-24, north of Kingston, two males offered to pave a homeowner's driveway with asphalt they claimed they had removed from a nearby parking lot demolition. The owner agreed and the suspects had three loads of cold asphalt delivered to the home. The suspects raked and rolled the product and then advised the owner that the price was $5,850. After writing a cheque to the suspects, the owner felt something was not right so she canceled it and called the O.P.P. Two suspects were apprehended; they were not charged with the fraud but detention orders were issued under the Immigration and Refugee Act. They are in custody awaiting deportation to their native United Kingdom. The suspects arrived in Canada on July 1, 2013 and appear to have been active in southern and eastern Ontario. If anyone has had any involvement in a suspected paving fraud in the South Frontenac area they are asked to contact D/Cst Don Davies at 613-372-1932 ext. 6942 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

ecki, Theresa and Katie, the three Procter sisters who hail from Sharbot Lake, got a special surprise as they walked to the shore of Oso beach after successfully completing their fifth annual three kilometre Swim of Hope on July 27. Following the close to two-hour swim, the three sisters were greeted by Claire Macfarlane, unit president of KLF&A Canadian Cancer Society, who congratulated the ladies for their efforts. “What a great job, ladies. We surely appreciate all you have done for the Canadian Cancer Society over the last five years,” Macfarlane said. This year was an especially memorable swim since Katie made it while six months pregnant. The three began their swim at 10am at Sharbot Lake Provincial Park and Becki reported that the conditions were good. They swam under sunny skies with a few waves and all three looked a bit chilled but in very high spirits after landing on the beach around noon. Theresa said she initiated the Swim Of Hope event after she missed participating in that year’s annual Relay for Life event in Parham. “I knew that I wanted to do something to contribute to the cause and that was how the idea for a swim across the lake arose.” This year alone the sisters raised over $1000 for cancer research. artists like Norval Morriseau and it was interesting to see how his style has matured over the years. While much of his highly stylized, abstract, colourful imagery remains similar to his first creations years ago, certain subtle stylistic changes in colour and form demonstrate a young artist who is continuing to come into his own. Visitors to this year’s show were also treated to a BBQ lunch courtesy of the friends of Bon Echo, a Sciensational Sssnakes presentation and live music. Also, as usual, visitors had a chance to enter a raffle for a number of impressive prizes to take home. For those who have yet to visit the park this summer here is a list of other upcoming events: Sat. Aug. 3, 7pm: Group of Seven Painter A.J. Casson's daughter Margaret Hall and Chris Jackson will be speaking about the famed Canadian painter. Sat. Aug. 10, 8pm: Dr. Robert McLeman on climate change. Thurs Aug. 15, 1pm: “Speaking of Wildlife”. Thurs. Aug. 22, 7pm: Margaret Axford on Bon Echo - The Early Years; and Sat. Aug. 24 at 4:30pm: Bill White and White Pine will be performing. Habitat groundbreaking By Jeff Green ast Friday, July 26, on one of those rare Goldilocks summer afternoons, the Strong Women Drum kicked off a short ceremony to mark the spot where in the next few months the first Habitat for Humanity House in Frontenac County will be going up. The Kingston/Frontenac chapter of Habitat for Humanity Canada has built 11 homes thus far. The first 10 were in the City of Kingston, and the 11th was in the village of Bath. The move into the surrounding rural areas from the organization’s base in Kingston is the fulfilment of one of the goals of the chapter to expand into the entire region. According to interim CEO Tim Jamieson, it is also based on the reality that “it is becoming harder and harder to find affordable land in the city itself.” Since the organisation is entirely supported by donations of labour, materials and cash, the cost of land is a major concern. “We were fortunate that Rick and Cathy Goodfellow offered up a building lot in Tichborne to us at a very reasonable price,” said Jamieson, “and since we know there is a need in Central Frontenac, it was a great fit.” The project will be built with the assistance of Kingston’s prison population. Corrections Canada is one of Habitat’s partners in Kingston, and through an inmate training program in the construction trades, the out-
L
er shell of the house will be built in Kingston and shipped in two pieces to the site in Tichborne. A couple of weeks before that happens, another crew of inmates will travel up to the site and will help put the cement foundation in. “Somewhere around the beginning of October, the building will arrive and the rest of the work on the house will begin, with help from local volunteers and others,” said Jamieson. The site already has a well and septic system in place, thanks to the efforts of Davy Well Drilling and Nedow Construction and the on-site construction phase will be supervised by Tarasick Construction. The family selection is slated for this month, and although the criteria for eligible families is rather strict, (the family income level must be over $29,000 but under $59,000 and the family must not already own a home) there are three local families who are still in consideration for selection. The family that is selected will be obligated to provide 200 hours worth of labour to the project. When the home is completed they will purchase it and take on a mortgage, but the difference between the Habitat home and others is that no down payment will be required and the mortgage will be interest-free. “The goal for this project is to provide a family a way out of the renting cycle. For what it is costing them now to rent, they will
Joyous groundbreaking in Tichborne be able to purchase their own home and provide the level of security to their children that comes with home ownership,” said Jamieson. The ground breaking marks a new kick start for the Tichborne build. It had been planned for May, but the CEO of Habitat Greater Kingston and Frontenac left his job

abruptly in early May for personal reasons. With a vacuum at the top of the small organization it was necessary to take a step back. “There was also a problem with financing at the time, which has since been worked out with the bank,” said Tim Jamieson, who is the Vice-President of the Habitat Kingston Board and has stepped in as CEO until a permanent individual is hired, which is expected to happen within a month. The Tichborne Habitat home should be ready for occupancy in the early part of 2014.
