John Antoine Honoured With Plaque At Frontenac Park Family moved to Sharbot Lake where their presence is still felt. Frank Antoine, along with his grand-daughter Sophia (not pictured) were on hand for the unveiling of a plaque at the entrance to Frontenac Park last week. The spot where the Antoine family lived on Devil Lake in the mid 1800s was named Antoine Point. That part of Devil's Lake is located within what is now Frontenac Park. The Friends of Frontenac Park decided to commission the plaque in order to bring the Indigenous history of the park to the forefront. John Antoine was originally from Lake of Two Mountains, near Montreal. He had at least 6 children with his first wife, Sophie Legere, and at least 7 more with his second wife, Elizabeth (Eliza) Hollywood. There is a reference to John Antoine in The Enduring Spirit, a book about Frontenac Park that was published by the Friends of Frontenac Park in 1997 and is still available at the park. “Several Indian families, most notably the John Antoine family, lived for many years in the park’s immediate area. John Antoine’s family resided on Antoine Point in Devil Lake, just within the northern boundary of the park. The shadowy indentation of his cabin outline is still visible today on the point.” There is another Antoine Point in Frontenac County. It is also named for John Antoine. John Antoine moved from Devil Lake to Sharbot Lake and established a homestead at what is now known as Antoine Point on the east basin of Sharbot Lake, off of the Shibley Road. Shibley Road was named for Frederick Shibley, whose family were landowners in Frontenac and Lennox and Addington Counties. He came to own an island on Sharbot
Lake, which he named Aspinwall Island. Fred Shibley lived in New York, and he hired John Antoine to care for his property on Sharbot Lake, which was adjacent to Antoine Point, where John had settled with his second large family. Shibley wrote an essay about John Antoine. He knew John Antoine near the end of Antoine’s life. In it, Shibley wrote, “I knew John Antoine intimately during the last fifteen years. I have received from his comradeship and his friendship more than from any other man, He and I came very close together in the later years. It is a tribute of love that I now Frank Antoine, an Algonquin who grew up in Sharbot Lake, was proud to unveil a plaque in honour of his grandfather John Antoine at Frontenac Provincial Park near Sydenham pay his memory.” He describes Antoine as of the wilderness. There was a peculiar kinship between a “hunter, a trapper, a guide, adding to these strenuous him and the birds. Crows talked to him as if he were an occupations of his youth, that of a gardener in his later old but somewhat severe friend. He would touch a flower years. The world beyond the woods meant little to him. He as tenderly as if it were a curl on a baby's head.” never saw a great city or conceived the intensive struggle Frank and Joanne Antoine are John Antoine’s grandof men and women for wealth, place and power. Hillier Slams Scott Reid
By Jeff Green Hillier slams Scott Reid It might be a bit tense these days at the offices that are shared by MP Scott Reid and MPP Randy Hillier in Perth and Carleton Place. The two men have been political allies for many years, and were both part of the origin of the Lanark Landowners, the group that Hillier founded and used as a springboard to start his own electoral career. It was at Reid’s kitchen table in Carleton Place, when he was a first-term MP in the early 2000’s, that Hillier and others who were concerned about landowner’s rights first met and began talking about forming an organisation. In 2007 Randy Hillier was first elected as MPP. The two men established a joint federal-provincial constituency office in 2010. They said it was cheaper and more convenient for constituents. They call it the One Stop Government Shop. Any potential conflicts between the provincial and federal wings of the two parties were not of major concern to the two political allies, both of whom have described themselves as Libertarians. When Randy Hillier was booted from the Ontario party in 2019, Scott Reid came to his defence. Relations between Reid and the Conservative Party of Canada are not as easy as they were. He was the Deputy House Leader under Stephen Harper for 9 years, but now he no longer has committee assignments. He remains a member of caucus however, and is once again a candidate under the Conservative banner in the current federal election. When interviewed ten days ago by the Frontenac News, Reid noted that he now differs from Hillier on a number
I
of issues. The first is political affiliation, because Hillier had endorsed another party, the People's Party of Canada, in the election. The two men also take different views towards both vaccinations and maskwearing as a response to COVID. Reid supports both and Hillier vigorously opposes them. However, Scott Reid said he agreed with Hillier on one point, the assertion that lockdowns for COVID were neither effective, nor legal. Relations between the two must be further strained now, as Randy Hillier posted a tweet on Monday that takes direct aim at Scott Reid, and the business that Reid’s father still runs, Giant Tiger. “As with all conservatives, they become Silent seals in the @erinotoole caucus, even the wealthy @ScottReidCPC could not muster an utterance to support businesses that were shuttered as Giant Tiger prospered. Not the representation I want.” The tweet came out in response to an appearance by Reid on All in a Day, the CBC Ottawa afternoon show. Reid was selected by the program to answer to his and his party’s policies regarding combatting discrimination. In the segment, Reid discussed Islamophobia, anti-sem-

itism, mental health among Indigenous Canadians, as well as legislation regarding conversion therapy. It is unclear what part of the segment sparked Hillier’s ire, unless Hillier was disappointed that Scott Reid did not discuss discrimination against businesses due to lockdown measures. Perhaps they can discuss that around the water cooler at one of their offices sometime after the election, if Scott Reid wins the vote on September 20. (Note - The Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, has named John Jordan as the candidate for the next provincial election, to replace MPP Hillier as their candidate. Jordan is the CEO of Connect Well, Community Health in the Village of Lanark. He is the son of the late MPP Leo Jordan.) ■

Central Frontenac Finalizes Official Plan
By Craig Bakay entral Frontenac Council held an online Special Council meeting Monday to adopt several ‘amendments’ to its 2021 Official Plan that had been approved to its 2008 Official Plan but inadvertently been left off the new plan. “Cathy (CAO/Clerk MacMunn) and I realized that these weren’t part of text a couple of weeks ago,” said planner Joe Gallivan. “There are 15 changes, eight of which are redundant but we’re putting them in out of an abundance of caution. “These are not ‘amendments’ to the Official Plan, as

the changes to the text of the adopted plan addressed in this report are already part of the Official Plan. “These items were inadvertently left out of the text and are now being reinserted to ensure that Council considers the complete text when it also considers the proposed amendments.” The previously adopted amendments are primarily changes to the land use schedule. Gallivan said the Central Frontenac Official Plan will now go to the County Planning Advisory Committee and should be approved at the Sept. 15 County Council meeting. “There will then be a 20-day appeal period and if there are no appeals, the new Official Plan should come into effect sometime in October,” he said. Building Assesment Treasurer Michael McGovern also used the special meeting to get approval for an RFP issued jointly with North Frontenac Township for a building condition assessment contract. The contract was awarded to McIntosh Perry for $100,000 (Central’s portion is $60,000)
“McIntosh Perry was only $400 more than Cambion but they have a lot more experience and North has used them in the past,” McGovern said. “This will tell Council the condition of our buildings,” said CAO/Clerk Cathy MacMunn. “Council may want to sell some of them.” The buildings include firehalls, libraries, community halls and offices. They do not include things like change rooms or waste site huts. McGovern said the Township was successful in securing a $48,000 grant from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities meaning the net contribution from the Township will be #12,211. He said they wanted to get this in now so that work can begin in the fall. North Frontenac had done their last assessment in the winter with less than satisfactory results. ■

as our governments’ (plural) waffling commitments to international affairs over the years. Actions of our past governments ( and US, Russian, and others) helped set the stage for this event. The current federal government did not create this mess alone - it received excellent support from previous governments and voters. This has been a remarkably successful operation by underfunded, under-equipped and obviously under-appreciated civil servants - military and non- military who are the real ‘Caretakers’ of our society. The term ‘Caretaker Government’ being bandied about by the media and well fuelled by some party leaders is an insult to our system of government, our military and our civil service. Our elected leaders do control the military and diplomatic purse-strings but none of them - even if they have served - have the comprehensive knowledge or experience to design, and carry out the globespanning procedure we’ve been watching in Afghanistan. The simplistic view that the rapid success of the Taliban should have been foretold only underscores the lack of public knowledge regarding the social, economic and political history of the country as well

As I run each morning, even on these humid days, I have my jacket tied around my waist. Why? My pockets are full of dog treats. In the month of August, I lost three friends. Brian, a neighbour, who has been my friend for over 12 years, Rusty, who lived next door, and Dozer, the silent one down the road. Brian usually caught me going and returning on my run. Rusty and I had a “challenging” relationship. He did not seem to appreciate my cookie toss but if I looked back, I would see him picking it up. Dozer was my farthest toss, between two vehicles. When the treat bounced under a vehicle, he would wait patiently for me to try again. I really miss them and I can only imagine the hole they have left in the lives of three families on my route. Jack is aging, along with me, and today I delivered his treat to him as he just couldn’t seem to manage the steps off the front porch to meet me. New in the neighbourhood are Bruce and Rosie. It took some convincing, but Bruce now greets me quietly and takes his treat more gently. Rosie still does lots of barking but is learning that I haven’t forgotten so the “noise” is getting less. Love my morning run!

The smaller group of participants will be asked for proof of vaccination and will dance at least one meter from each other. The session will run for 8 weeks at a cost of $40, every Friday. If you would like to join, please contact Rhonda Aisbitt (613.885.8543) or rhondaaisbitt@hotmail.ca. • The ABC Hall at 3166 Bolingbroke Road has been bringing neighbours together since 1947. Last year, the ABC Hall was awarded a $28,600 grant from Ontario Trillium Foundation to upgrade the 74 year old hall. Projects such as new kitchen appliances, installation of a hood fan; plumbing, rewiring, improvements to stage equipment and sound system are now completed. The hall is used by a variety of community groups – many aimed at seniors – for exercise classes, meetings, celebrations of life, musical events, and fundraising events. For more than seven decades, VOLUNTEERS contributed time and effort to preserving this heritage space as a hub for community activities. This grant enables the building to continue to make it possible to bring people together for years to come. • The heatwave has broken, which I’m sure has been a big, sweaty sigh of relief for all of us. Here on Buck Bay Rd, we’re hoping that means our chickens are going to produce more eggs, and we don’t have to worry about the animals spending more time frolicking outside, as they are meant to. • I’m sure many of you are in a similar situation as I am. It seemed like a great idea to plant 30 tomato plants in May, now come September, we are over run with all sizes, colours, shapes and varieties of the wonderfully versatile fruit. How many caprese salads, salsas, gazpachos and tomato sauces can our small family eat?!? It sure is nice to eat your own produce, and have tons to share with your neighbours, friends and family, though. • Get out there and enjoy the outdoors with your water wings and fishing rods before we have to dust off the cross country skis and sleds, while we dig through our wood piles trying to keep warm. Get your reading lists together as the days get shorter. I’ll be sure to share here what I’m getting into in the literary world. And would love to hear your suggestions of what to read. Bonus if it’s a local author or family member!

• I was devastated to hear of the passing of long time resident, Audree Tompkin, last week. Aud and her spouse, Fred, retired here a good many years ago, in a beautiful log structure on Garrison Lake. They became totally involved in many of the community groups, including the Seniors. I’ll never forget attending a crafting sale where they both were there showing off their abilities; Aud with her absolutely perfect seamstress work, including smocking, and Fred with his multitude of woodworking projects. Each item came with a lengthy description of materials used and time dedicated. Later, after Lorne and myself joining the Arden Seniors, we got to know Audree quite well, as she was the Secretary of Record. Sharp as a tack, she always created her own spin to the meetings, with most of it being comical in nature. A wonderful singer and a great volunteer to the community, on top of just being a great person, Audree will be greatly missed. • The Henderson United Church is hosting their Annual Yard Sale Saturday, September 4, at the Henderson Hall. Gently used items will be accepted on and until August 31. Masks and physical distancing are the protocol. Call Sheila at 613-335-2467 for further information or where you can donate items. • Coffee and conversation will start September 2 at 10:00am at the Arden Church, outside. Bring you mug & chair and join in. • The Sharbot Lake, St. Lawrence College Employment services is again offering another free workshop, this time on “boosting your resume” Please register at essl@sl.on.ca or give them a call at 613-545-3949 for more detailed information. • Please remember to register for the Health and Wellness Sessions offered by Community Support Services. Osteoarthritis, or OA, is the most common cause of physical disability in older adults. It can also be referred to as wear and tear or called degenerative joint disease. The hip is one of the most common joints affected by the condition. A joint is where two bones meet. These contacting areas of bone are covered with a tissue called cartilage. It’s smooth design with no nerve supply, allows low friction, pain free movement of the joint. OA occurs when this cartilage starts to thin. It can wear significantly enough to expose the roughened surfaces of bone beneath, becoming stiff and painful. Women are a little more likely to develop OA, as are those who have lead a particularly high impact lifestyle. Obesity plays a large role in increasing your chances of developing OA. The greater the load on the joints, the more stresses are placed on the tissues. Previous joint injury or structural abnormalities also increase your likelihood of developing OA. Exercise is key. The worst thing you could do by your hip is to stop using it. Focus on low impact exercises such as cycling, or swimming. Address the activities that particularly provoke your symptoms. It may be necessary to temporarily cut back. The weaker the muscles, the more excess stresses and strains are placed on the cartilage. Keeping the muscles of your trunk and legs strong and flexible will help you to protect your hip. OA can reduce the balance and control you have of your hip. Do not be afraid to use a walking aid. Degenerative conditions have good days and bad days. Using a walking stick or elbow crutches can help you to continue to function on these bad days and prevent you from further provoking your pain. Degeneration causes stiffness, so ensure you regularly move your hip through it’s entire range of motion.

Blake Hamilton Rhinoceros Party Candidate in Kingston-Lanark-Frontenac B by Jeff Green
lake Hamilton joined the Rhinoceros Party 3 years ago. “I was fed up with all the big parties. They had all become corrupt, dysfunctional and inept. And people are tired of strategic voting. The Rhinos are a great way to give enough people an option to make a statement against a broken system. “This election has been pretty emotional, people have been taking it, and themselves, very seriously. We also like to bring a bit of satirical humour to people during the elections.” The Rhinoceros Party was founded in 1963, and while most of its membership is based in Quebec, there are a number of Rhino candidates in Ontario this time around. The main promise that the party makes is not to adhere to any of its promises, which might be a good thing, considering one of the promises is to auction off Senate seats to raise funds and another is to deal with the looming threat of global warming over the next 20 years, by accelerating it to ten years. Although he lives, and works in Ottawa, Blake Hamilton is

originally from Carleton Place and is now connected to the Sharbot Lake Community as well. Although there are ridings available in Ottawa for Rhino candidates, he chose Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston for two reasons. This first has to do with his historic connection to the riding, which has made it easier to gather signatures, and the second is that it is a safe Conservative riding, so he feels there is no risk for voters supporting him. “This is a true blue riding. I am under no illusions that Scott Reid will be defeated in this election. There is no reason for people to vote strategically at all,” he said Noting that an NDP candidate in Toronto would like to change the name of a Toronto riding to pay homage the late NDP leader Jack Layton, Hamilton has proposed changing the name of the Lanark Frontenac – Kingston riding to Lanark-Frontenac-Reid to mark Scott Reid’s 20 years as an MP. The serious point behind the satire, for Hamilton, is a critique of the electoral system which has led to the same party representing the riding for decades. “The two main parties will never support changing the system to make everyone’s vote count,” he said. While the NDP and the Green Party both support electoral reform, he said that “from a political perspective, I don’t completely agree with their platforms. The main issue for the Rhinos is that the system is so broken that the only thing left to do is to be the joker. It’s a way to make a statement.” Blake Hamilton works for a tech company in Ottawa. Because of COVID, he does not anticipate doing much door to door campaigning, and will be using social media, Facebook and Twitter, as his main platforms. He uses BlakeTheRhino as his handle on both platforms. ■

History of the Rideau Canal
By Wilma Kenny unter McGill, President of Friends of the Rideau spoke to an outdoor gathering of the Dog and Cranberry Lakes Association on Sunday, about the building of the Rideau canal. Over 50 people sat scattered around a wide green space below the Upper Brewer’s Locks McGill began with some general information: at 189 years, the Rideau Canal is the oldest continuously operating canal in North America. It’s a National Historical Site and a UNESCO World Heritage site. A substantial portion of the Rideau runs along the southeastern part of South Frontenac, between the Seeley’s Bay area and Mount Chesney. Intended as part of a route between the great lakes and Montreal that could not be blockaded by the United States, the canal was a British military project, connecting the Rideau River to the Cataraqui River, often following aboriginal travel routes. It had been under discussion for two decades, but once begun under the direction of Colonel By, the actual construction was accomplished in the four years between 1827 and the fall of 1831. Working conditions were grim. An estimated thousand men died during those four years of construction: malaria and typhoid were rampant, tools were crude: picks, shovels, horses, oxen, and black powder for blasting. (Dynamite was not yet in use.) Most of the workers were Irish or French Canadian; the French cleared the land, and the Irish did the digging: the stonemasons came from Scotland.

Hunter McGil spoke to an outdoor gathering of the Dog and Cranberry Lakes Association about the building of the Rideau canal.

All the clusters of locks were built more or less simultaneously by individual private contractors, with one exception: the height of land at Newboro, which defeated two contractors. That section was eventually completed by the Royal Engineers; dams were used to raise the water level on both sides of a five-mile wide granite ridge, to minimize the amount of blasting needed. Overall, the Rideau is a ‘slack water’ canal, accomplished by connecting flooded lands with channels dug at least five feet deep: dams were cheaper to build than locks. Cranberry Lake before it was flooded was a small lake in a huge boggy area, one of the major sources of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Right from the beginning, Col. By insisted the British budget of 160,000 British Pounds was far too low: the eventual cost was 822,000. By was recalled to Britain to account for this large cost overrun, and although eventually exonerated, he never got the recognition he deserved for his accomplishment. McGill regretted that due to repeated cut-backs, the National Parks Commission has had to withdraw all interpretive staff and programs from the Rideau’s lock sites, leaving only enough staff to maintain and operate the locks themselves. In contrast, the C-D Lakes Association were excellent, well-organized hosts, providing a good loudspeaker system, draws for lake-associated mugs, hats, shirts, etc, and free chocolate-coated ice cream bars. ■
Fantasy In The Forest Is Back! The Fantasy in the Forest Art show was one of the casualties of COVID in 2020, and with COVID restrictions lingering into the summer of 2021 it did not happen on its normal July date. Undaunted, the Fantasy is back, 41 exhibitors strong, and the Draper Lake studio Perth Road’s Jamie Brick. The Fantasy will run on Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5, from 10 am to 5pm. Admission to the show is free. There will be live music all weekend, and food will be provided by the “Smokin’ Carnivore” food truck.
Fantasy in the Forest is a fully juried show, featuring pottery, clothing, jewellery, sculpture, glass and two-dimensional art. Many of the Fantasy favourites are back for this special edition of the show; including Deb Stagg, Wilma Van Wyngaarden, Monica Viola and Jean Marc Doiron. Among new artists are decoupage artist Benjamin Laughlin, and Rebecca Hodgkins of Cosmic Ties. KFLAPH will be on hand to offer COVID vaccinations on Sunday. For further information, go to Fantasy in the Forest on Facebook. ■

by Trina Conboy (MERA Administrator hird time lucky! This outdoor art exhibition has been rescheduled three times, from May to June and now to September 18. The many contributing artists have had more time to make amazing creations, and now we are ready to see all our friends again. One of the highlights of the show will be “Cruise and Reuse” by the MERA Art Circle, who have made special works of art using recycled material from the famous McDonalds Corners reuse centre. Both artists and visitors are invited to wear interesting and creative masks, and there will be a table for children, and perhaps adults, to make their own masks for fun. The exhibition will open from 10 AM until 4 PM, and will be held outside on the attractive grounds around the school house. Covid rules will be respected, and will depend on public health rules. Rain date is Sunday, September 19. To be a contributing artist, or for more information, look at the MERA website, meraschoolhouse.org, or email Wayne at gwstryde@outlook.com. ■

very September in the northern hemisphere, we have the autumnal equinox. This year it occurs on September 22nd. It marks the start of fall. A second equinox occurs each year in March. It is called the vernal equinox and signals the start of spring. After the autumnal equinox, the days get shorter and the nights get longer as we’re dragged kicking and screaming towards winter. The vernal equinox is the opposite. We happily go along with longer days and shorter nights and summertime. In the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to ours in the north. At the moment of the equinox, the Sun is directly above the equator. Remember that the Earth doesn’t spin around an axis directly straight up and down. It has a tilt of 23.4 degrees. This means that as the Earth orbits the Sun, the tilt of the northern hemisphere inclines more towards the Sun in summer and away from the Sun in winter. An equinox marks the point when the change of tilting away or towards the Sun begins; in other words. The moment when the maximum tilt of the Earth is farthest away or towards the Sun is called a solstice. These occurs halfway between the equinoxes. The word for “equinox” is a mix of 2 Latin words: ‘aequus’, for equal and ‘nox, for night. I promised a new contest for September and here it is. The winning prize is the same as last time: the beautiful and informative book “The Elements” by Theodore Gray. The colourful photographs and easily understood text in this book is a very useful reference for young students and adults and a perfect guide for understanding the universe. Ok, here’s the question: “What do astronomers call the position of the Moon’s orbit on September 26th?” To help me choose the winner from the entrants that have answered correctly, describe for me some interesting things about the Moon’s orbit around the Earth. Impress me. Send answers to my email address or to the editor. During September, before midnight, 6 planets can be found with your binoculars and telescopes. Neptune is
Law Office in Sharbot Lake Real Estate & Estates
in the south and Uranus is in the east at mid evening. Neptune is in opposition on the 14th and, at a magnitude of 7.7, can be seen in binoculars. You’ll have to do a little research to find its position in the sky. On September 19th it’s 6 degrees north of the Full Moon. Venus is bright in the west just after sunset but close to the horizon. Note a special event: the Moon passes just above and to the north side of the Moon on the 9th. Jupiter and Saturn are spectacular in the southeast in the evening. By midnight they are more to the south and high at 35 degrees. Get your binoculars out and enjoy the moons of both planets. Use your cell phone to catch pictures. Experiment with the zoom function or try to get a picture through your binoculars. Please email me what you get and your experiences getting the pictures. I just recently started using my cell for quick astronomy images. It’s a lot of fun and the results can be surprising in a good way! Monthly Highlights: Sept. 5: Venus passes just north of Spica low on the western horizon soon after sunset. An almost new Moon is close by and to the right. Mercury, although dim, is a bit below Spica and the Moon; Sept. 6: New Moon; Sept. 8: The Moon passes 7 degrees north of Mercury about 10pm; Sept. 11: The Moon is at perigee – 366,322 Kms; Sept.13: First Quarter Moon; Sept. 14: Neptune is in opposition; Sept. 16: The Moon can be found 4 degrees south of Saturn at 11pm; Sept. 18: The Moon is 4 degrees south of Jupiter at 3am; Sept. 20: The Moon is 4 degrees south of Neptune at 5am. It’s also a Full Moon. This Full Moon is called the Cenqolew (Dog Salmon) Full Moon by western first nations. It’s also known as the Full Corn Moon or the Full Harvest Moon. For me, it marks the beginning of the best season for observing. The nights are clear and have the cool organic smell of fresh fallen leaves and all the bugs are hibernating; Sept. 22: Autumnal Equinox; Sept. 26: The Moon is at Apogee – 402,291 Kms; Sept. 28: Last Quarter Moon. Useful books, star charts and related items for beginners and through to advanced amateurs can be ordered from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada at www. rasc.ca/publications. A subscription to our very own excellent Canadian astronomy magazine “SkyNews” can be arranged at the RASC website as well. Let me know how your observing has gone this month, especially anything unusual. I enjoy the feedback. If you have any questions or suggestions you can contact me through this paper or email me at fred.barrett2@sympatico.ca . Clear Skies! Fred ■
