"If our hopes of building a better and safer world are to become more than wishful thinking, we will need the engagement of volunteers more than ever." - Kofi Annan Sharbot Lake is a lovely community and so welcoming to new people such as myself. It is good to give back and I so enjoy working with the elderly. Volunteer

Northern Frontenac Community Services (NFCS) was established on a foundation of volunteerism and a belief in the power of local people to make a meaningful difference in the development of a vibrant community. In 2015 ninety-eight people volunteered, contributing hours of time to provide essential supports to individuals in our community. Volunteers have assisted with transportation, income tax preparation, Gail Young from Fronteanc Transportation Service presents Marion Barker with her award. Christmas hampers, MealsOn April 11, 2016 NFCS hosted our 36th annual volunon-Wheels, Child Centre activities, Day Programs, Drop In teer appreciation night to formally recognize our volevents, Trustee responsibilities, agency governance and unteers and let them know the impact their contribua range of other activities. NFCS volunteers make a real tion has in our community. This annual event is held to difference everyday in our community. celebrate and thank our volunteers for their gift of time

I have been lucky in my life and a volunteering is my way of giving back to the community. Volunteer

By the numbers:

29 Volunteers drove for Frontenac Transportation Services in 2015. 727,848 kms were driven by FTS volunteers between April 1 2015 to March 31 2016. 231 income tax returns were completed by four volunteers in 2016. 148 Christmas Hampers were provided to families in partnership with Salvation Army. 10 board members provided the leadership and oversight for NFCS, thereby ensuring NFCS fulfils the requirements of our community and funders.

Thank You to our funders!

and energy. This year we welcomed over 75 volunteers and their guests. It was a great night of conversation, entertainment and good food. Volunteer appreciation night gives NFCS staff the opportunity to honour the hard work of our dedicated volunteers by serving them dinner. Staff recognize that we couldn’t do our work in the community without them.

I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to participate as a volunteer in the much needed Christmas hamper Program. This program embodies the true spirit of a caring community that reaches out to its neighbours in times of need. Volunteer

Volunteer of the Year Marion Barker

Marion has been a volunteer driver over 10 years. She is a very dedicated driver. The clients love her and often ask for her to drive them. Over the years there have been very few times that she has been unable to take a drive when asked. There have been a lot of times that she has changed her own personal appointments so that she could drive for us. She goes the extra mile for both Frontenac Transportation and for our clients. This insert is dedicated to the many volunteers, past and present, who have contributed to the vision and the day to day sustainability of the organization. ■

Two New Vans for NFCS

With the generous support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area, we were able to purchase two new vans in March so we can bring our services into the smaller communities throughout Frontenac. Frontenac is over 3,150 km square. Residents are spread out throughout the county, the density is only 7.8 people /km squared, compared to the City of Kingston where the density is 273 people /km squared. To increase accessibility and to strengthen local communities, Northern Frontenac Community Services is committed to provide programs where families live. We deliver many of our programs to residents in their own communities; hamlets and villages throughout the county. Our vans are the backbone of our programs. They are used daily to bring programming to young families, youth, seniors and other community residents throughout the County, from Storrington, Sydenham, Plevna, Harrowsmith and Mountain Grove. On average our vans are driven over 5,500 kms a month. Purchasing these vans was made possible by the Ontario Trillium Foundation and the Community Foundation of Kingston and Area. We appreciate their understanding of rural services and recognition, through this funding, that rural residents need services close to home. Special thanks to Kingston Dodge Chrysler and Adam Bergeron for their assistance to purchase two new vans. ■

Community Drop In

Adult Protective Services Worker (APSW) Mike, our Adult Protective Services Worker, works with developmentally disabled adults to help them live independently, as contributing, responsible members of their community. He works directly with individuals in the community and refers them to appropriate services when needed. Supports provided by Mike can include medical coordination, help with financial management, counselling and various others. The program is free and voluntary.

The Community Drop In The Community Drop In is a weekly meeting place for people of all walks of life in the area. Every Wednesday approximately 25 people meet at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Hall in Sharbot Lake to enjoy each other’s company, develop friendships and enjoy good food. The doors open at 9 am and the participants shop for the food for the noon meal. The menu is planned in advance and favourites include pork chops, home made pizza, meatloaf, spaghetti and meals often include home made bread. Food preparation takes up a good portion of the morning but there is always time for a friendly game of cards, board games or casual

chatting. The noon meal, costing only $5, is the highlight of the day. Often, crafts and other activities such as Bingo are organized to fill the day. The Community Drop In is a collaborative venture supported by Northern Frontenac Community Services and Community Living – North Frontenac and over the years a number of other community organizations and agencies have helped out when needed, making this a truly community owned program. The Community Drop In is looking forward to completing its 20th year of operation in October with a variety of activities and celebrations. Commemorative T shirts will be available as well as free lunch vouchers and other events; more details will be advertised in September. Please feel free to stop by the Drop In any Wednesday, enjoy a free coffee and see what we’re all about. See you at the Drop In.

Paul and Aimee Gosse, our caterers, served a total of 802 delicious meals. Not only was the food good, but their presentation and attention to detail was very much appreciated. Community Drop-In

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Hall, Sharbot Lake Every Wednesday starting at 9am This is a not-for-profit initiative reaching out to the comummunity, providing healthy home-made meals in a non-threatening social environment.

For me this simple statement sums up participant’s experiences in our Day Programs. Back in 2002 we started with one senior Day Program in Sharbot Lake; meeting once a week in an upstairs room at the former Seniors Residence. Now we have three Day Programs meeting weekly in Plevna, Parham and Sharbot Lake. We gather in the morning to enjoy the planned activities of the day. Sometimes we bake, play games, or create something we have never attempted before. There are some memories which go down in history, like the famous apple pie story where salt was mistaken for sugar and all but one pie out of thirteen were laced with a good dose of sodium. We have celebrated holidays, and birthdays together. During the summer Olympics one year we tried our hand at our own rendition of the summer games with intense competition and a presentation of medals and flowers at the close of the day. For many years we have baked loaves of Christmas cake, remembering Christmas preparations of by gone years. The value of Day Programs is not simply in the activities of the day, or the good food provided, but in the relationships formed. The program is excellent for seniors who are faced with the challenges of aging. Who better to support and encourage one another than their peers. Caregivers also appreciate the opportunity to rest or run errands while their family member is enjoying the day with us. As we get older so much of life includes loss; loss of health, family members and friends, homes, and the list goes on. However, rather than focus on loss, we put our attention on living today, enriching one another’s lives no matter the health or cognitive ability life brings. I personally deem it a great privilege to have come alongside many seniors over the thirteen plus years I have been involved in Day Programs. My life has been enriched. This past April we hired Sandy Thiel as the new Day Program Supervisor. She brings with her a wealth of experience serving seniors in the community and in Long-Term Care environments. May she find this role as rewarding as I have. ■

Healthy Kids Community Challenge The children and youth in North, Central and South Frontenac are enjoying extra programs that encourage children to Run, Jump, Play Everyday. These programs are part of the provincial the Healthy Kids Community Challenge, which unites communities with a common goal: promoting children’s health through healthy behaviours and supportive environments. The programs are funded through a grant obtained by KFL&A Public Health from Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. This spring the children and youth in our community have been participating in a two month obstacle course challenge at four afterschool sites, two daycares and at multiple playgroups. As well, all the youth in our soccer program received their very own soccer ball to enhance their ball handling skills! This program has included many of our community partners. There was a dance in Sharbot Lake on May 7th, facilitated by District #3 Recreation Committee. There was also a Fun day at Clarendon Central for the
