This wordle shows all the words that have been identified with NFCS.

What words describe NFCS to you? Northern Frontenac Community Services (NFCS) is a community basesd, multi-service organization providinga range of programs and support to our community. We also host many organizations who are located in other communities and who have staff who come to Sharbot Lake to deliver their services to the residents in North and Central Frontenac. The province calls this a multi service Hub. While many residents across Frontenac might have heard or know of a program or service we provide, many people don’t know about the range of services we have because they haven’t needed them or just didn’t know to ask. Our name is as broad as our programs. Some community members know about our Home Support Services and Day Away for seniors. Others know about the Daycare, the Child Centre and the various Playgroups. While others know Frontenac Transportation Services, which was originally called Rural Routes. Our staff and board have been discussing how to increase awareness of our organization and the services we provide in the communities throughout Frontenac County, leading us to question if our name adequately reflects who we are. A name can describe where you are. Our Adult Centre, Child Centre, Seniors Centre and Frontenac Transportation Services are all physically situated in Sharbot Lake, in Central Frontenac. So why are we called Northern Frontenac? For our first 21 years our name “North Frontenac Community Services” reflected what we do, provide services in our community, and our delivery area as well, North Frontenac, which was a common description for the northern 7 townships in Frontenac County. All that changed in 1998, when through municipal amalgamation, our name became similar to that of the new “North Frontenac Township” and our offices in Sharbot Lake were suddenly located in Central Frontenac Township. In 2001, we changed our name Northern Frontenac Community Services, to include the Township of North

Thank You to our funders!

Frontenac, The Township of Central Frontenac and parts of South Frontenac, specifically the old Township of Bedford, while still keeping our identity as NFCS. Eighteen years later, the question about where we deliver services is relevant again. For nearly twenty years we have been providing programming throughout South Frontenac for families with children newborn to age six and more recently our youth programs have been offered in Verona and Harrowsmith. Many of our families, funders and communities in South Frontenac don't know that the services they use are delivered by NFCS and those that do ask why Northern Frontenac Community Services is providing outreach services for children and youth in the south? Frontenac Transportation Services (FTS) has always served North, Central and South Frontenac Townships, and will soon include Frontenac Islands, but do people know that it is operated by Northern Frontenac Community Services? Even in Central Frontenac, some people are not aware that our four locations in Sharbot Lake are all programs operated by Northern Frontenac Community Services. This gave us food for thought. When we need to ask for funding or donations and our donors don’t know who we are, then we have a challenge. A name can become who you are. RBC, TD, NIKE, are all names we recognize and have been branded for years. For many residents NFCS is our name. It is familiar and easy to say. We are concerned, because our “brand” is not enough for a family attending a play group in Harrowsmith or a funder we are asking to fund a program in Verona to know who we are. We are looking at options. What do we know? The new name will help to clarify who we are. The wordle above illustrates words that have been identified with NFCS – Rural, Outreach, Services, Community, Family, Hub, Home, Seniors, Rural Roots, etc. Continued page 4 see Name...

Children's winter snowsuit drive works with over 20 local agencies to identify children in need. Radio and television stations describe the clothing needs of the children and the public is invited to sponsor a child by purchasing a new snowsuit or donating funds. Every year, approximately 2000 needy children are given a snowsuit. For over 10 years Northern Frontenac Community Services has been the distribution site for families in the South, Central and North Frontenac. Families can call The Child Centre for more information and to have their names added to the list. Last year Northern Frontenac Community Services handed out 93 winter coats. We also collected money to purchase winter coats for children that don’t fit into the size categories. If you would like to donate a coat or funds to purchase a coat for a child please call The Child Centre or email kids@nfcs.ca ■

You’re Invited By Catherine Tysick As staff we appreciate the opportunity to connect with seniors of all ages. It helps us to better understand the needs and wishes of those in our community. This year we intentionally want to receive input from our younger senior population as to their thoughts on how NFCS can support and create opportunities of interest to them. To do this we hope to connect with existing groups, design an on-line survey, and possibly host some town hall meetings. If you have some thoughts already give Catherine a call at the Adult Centre (279-3151, ext. 109). Your input is welcomed. Thanks in advance. ■

Counselling Service

On Wednesday, October 12, the Community Drop In will celebrate its 20th anniversary by hosting a free community lunch over the noon hour. The Drop In first opened its doors in mid-October in 1996 in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church hall in Sharbot Lake and except for two weeks off every Christmas and the odd snow storm, has been open every Wednesday since then. The Drop in is meant to be a meeting place where all people can visit and feel included, welcome, comfortable and enjoy a nutritious noon meal. Since the beginning, Community Living – North Frontenac has been providing weekly transportation and staff support and Northern Frontenac Community Services has provided a coordinator. During the first year of operation, the Drop In averaged 12 people each week and today a regular crowd of 25 – 30 attends every Wednesday. The participants help to plan the menu for the noon meals and money received from this is the only source of income for the Drop in. A special thank you is extended to the parishioners of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church for their continued support and to the many other groups and individuals who supported the Drop In over the years (the mincemeat tarts at Christmas are a real treat). We hope to see many old friends and new faces at this wonderful milestone. Please contact Mike Procter at 613-279-3151 if you have any questions.

If you are feeling stressed out, angry, or down in the dumps and want someone to talk to please call to find out about our free and confidential individual, family and couples counselling. There is help available.

Meals on Wheels Survey At our annual NFCS BBQ our Meals on Wheels Program announced Virgil Garrett as the winner of a $25 gift card to Mike Dean’s. Virgil was one of many who completed a MOW survey we had circulated. The survey indicated that over 80% of those who responded are satisfied with the variety, taste, and temperature of the meals upon arrival. 87% believed that receiving the meals helped them remain independently in their own home. We also gleaned some good ideas for our future menus; more salads in the summer, casseroles for variation and the desserts are a hit, especially the cheese cake! Thank you to all those who provided feedback. Call us any time as more ideas come to mind. ■

Summer Camp

Name... Continued from page 1 After the members of NFCS approve the new name and we have done the legal work that needs to be completed, we will make a public announcement. Then the work begins. We will need your help. We will reach out to the community, our members, our clients, our donors and funders to get you talking about who we are and what we do. This newspaper insert will be one way we will communicate the change to you. We publish it three times a year, and distribute it in the

Frontenac Newspaper to share information about the programs and increase awareness. We think it is working. If you have any ideas or suggestions, we welcome your feedback. NFCS was founded by the community for the community. We want to hear from you. Have ideas? Comments? Suggestions? Please forward them to louisem@nfcs.ca or visit our Northern Frontenac Community Services Facebook page and add your comments. ■

Jake Watson was our much loved summer student this year. The kids enjoyed his energy and caring attitude.

The Child Centre Summer Camp has finished another season of fun. The program ran Tuesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays for 8 weeks between July 4th and August 26th. This summer, there were twenty-one campers who participated in outdoor activities, themed crafts, and finished their days by getting to swim at Sharbot

Lake Beach. When asked why they liked coming to camp, one camper stated “I get to see my friends in the summer, AND go to the beach to swim!” The campers also went on two trips this summer. The first trip was to the Land O’Lakes Rescue Petting Farm in Cloyne, where the children were told how the animals were rescued. They then

fed and pet the animals, horses, ducks goats, and pigs. Camp staff Jasmine even got to hug a turkey! The second trip was to Perth Outfitters where the campers got to Mini-Golf. After the round of golf, campers were taken to the Splash Pad to cool off. All in all the campers and staff had another great summer. See you all next year. ■

On August 18 NFCS hosted our community BBQ. With help from Cota’s Mobile Catering we served 300 hamburgers, nearly 200 hotdogs and 15 dozen corn! It was a great night at Oso beach with live entertainment by Shawn McCullough and a special visit by Sparky the fire dog. It was great to see so many of you enjoying the beautiful summer evening. We are looking forward to next year.
