20th Anniversary for Meals-On-Wheels Our first day for Meals-On-Wheels was Sept. 16, 1999. Meals were only delivered one day a week, on Thursdays & cost $4.50. Twenty years ago, our hot Meals-On-Wheels program began in Central Frontenac, expanding into North Frontenac shortly thereafter. Ruth Geddes, the Community Support Supervisor at the time, approached Anne Howes, owner of The Rising Bun Bakery and Tea Room, to see if she would be the caterer. Anne said, ‘Yes’ and the rest is history. From 1999 to 2005, Anne and her staff prepared all the food for Meals-On-Wheels, offering two meal options each time. We were grateful for such a great start to the program. Around 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you visited The Rising Bun Bakery and Tea Room in Sharbot Lake you would find volunteers gathering to pick up the meals and delivery route sheets for the day. Tom and Eileen Christenson, John and Erlene Lee, Alvin Lake and Vern Crawford were among our first Meals-On-Wheels drivers in Central Frontenac, collectively volunteering for 68 yrs. Alvin continues to drive to this day.
In the last five years we have delivered over 15,000 meals, including soup and dessert to 168 seniors. Over the years several residents of North Frontenac volunteered to meet a Meals-On-Wheels driver at the 509 and Ardoch Road intersection to receive the meals for the north and travel the Ardoch Road, 506, 509 loop. We could not begin to calculate the number of hours given and kilometres traveled to deliver meals through-
out rural Frontenac over the last 20 years. After Anne Howes, we hired caterers Linda Clarke and Bessie Steele, The Maples, the Penalty Box Family Restaurant, North of 7 Restaurant and Black’s Bakery to provide the meals for the program. Following that we brought the catering of the meals in-house to Rural Frontenac Community John & Erlene Lee, Anne Howes, Alvin Lake and Vern Crawford would be interested in hearing more about. The volunteers might be the only people a senior will see in a day. The social interaction and human connection are invaluable to many of the clients receiving meals. The noon meals are still served on Tuesday and Thursday and consist of soup, a main dish, and a dessert. The kitchen staff do their best to accommodate dietary restrictions and food allergies. The cost of the meal is only $5 and includes favourites like homemade Pizza, Pork Chops, Meatloaf and often includes homemade bread. The Drop In has been able to run successfully for all these years through the dedicated service of many volunteers and by the continued efforts of staff from Rural Frontenac Community Services and Community Living-North Frontenac. Youth Program Update Summer Camp
Kids Club
Our Summer Camp was extremely successful this year! We had many full days with our maximum number of campers. The campers enjoyed swim time at the beach, participating in Survivor Week team challenges, and getting to make new friends. Our staff Deanna and Teagan organized themed weeks and special challenges for our campers. Some highlights from camp were: travelling to the Perth Splash pad, Fear Factor week Jello eating contest, discovering in nature at Silver Lake and Sharbot Lake Provincial Park, making crafts, and finishing off the summer with a trip to O’Reilly Lake Family Campground Water Park. Thank you to Sharbot Lake Family Health Team for allowing us to use the Community Room on Wednesdays; the campers loved playing on the swings and climbers. Thank you to Cox Bus Lines for the use of
the school bus, and to Nicki Gowdy for being our reliable bus driver. A big thank you to Darragh Hayes and Keeley Cox for lifeguarding and keeping us all safe. And lastly a huge thanks to all of our campers who made each day exciting and adventure filled! Have a great year at school, and we hope to see you again in summer 2020!
After School Kids Club
Now that school is back in session our after school Kids Club is getting into full swing. Kids Club takes place at 5 different locations, each once a week. On Monday, September 9th the Frontenac EarlyON teams held four special events to celebrate the one year anniversary of the start of their eight EarlyON locations. The birthday party themed celebrations started early with a breakfast birthday event at the Sharbot Lake site. There was a full table for breakfast and everyone enjoyed reading the year highlights, as told by the families who use the services, on the rainbow wall. The children also thoroughly enjoyed singing Happy Birthday and blowing out candles on their cupcakes after breakfast! There was a large crowd out enjoying themselves at the lunch celebration at the Storrington Centre and then a small group for the official cake cutting ceremony at the Sydenham site for 1 pm. From 5:30 until 7 pm there were many families who came out to enjoy a light supper, cake and some singing at the Sydenham site. We want to thank everyone for helping us celebrate and the teams look forward to another great year of playgroups in the Frontenacs. ■

that Frontenac Transportation already provides. www.communitycarppool.ca will be a website where people who need a ride or are offering a ride can connect. It’s not just for low income people, although it will benefit individuals who live on a limited budget. It's neighbours helping neighbours. Sharing a ride is what worked in small rural communities 50 years ago and it can still work. Frontenac Transportation Services staff will be available to answer questions and to help those who can’t access the internet.
Christmas Hamper Day is December 18 in Sharbot Lake.
In a cooperative effort between the Salvation Army MississippiRideau Lakes Corps and other social agencies, Christmas Food Hampers will be made available to families or individuals in need. The distribution effort in Central, North and parts of South Frontenac is coordinated by staff and volunteers of Rural Frontenac Community Services. Every attempt is made to make a ham-
per available to those who need one. We will begin taking applications on November 12, 2019. If you feel you need a hamper, please call 613-279-3151 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. The deadline for referral is December 6, 2019. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Christmas Hamper Program may contact Joyce at 613-279-3151. ■
We aren’t bound by any geopolitical boundaries, the ride can start in one community and end in another. It won’t be just a north south highway 38 and highway 7 corridor. It can include communities in Lennox and Addington and Lanark County if there is a need for rides and drivers available. The website is currently under construction. We hope to launch in October 2019. We welcome your ideas and suggestions. If you are interested in assisting in the development of the program please give us a call. Our phone 613-279-3151 ext. 301 or toll free 1-877-2792052 ext. 301. You can email us at transportation@rfcs.ca. ■
Income Tax
Each year we assist low income individuals and families prepare their income tax returns in March and April. This year four volunteers completed 208 tax returns. If you have a good understanding of income tax, are comfortable completing returns for others, and are available for a couple of hours a week in March and April, please give Joyce a call at the Adult Centre. Training will be provided by Revenue Canada.
