Revell Ford Lincoln wraps up Cars for Cancer with generous donation to UHKF By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – Many families are affected by cancer. The disease, in all its forms, is still growing rapidly and until there is a cure, it will continue to affect families around the world. Cancer affected Noel Bateman and his family in December of 2012 with the loss of his mother-in-law. While the experience was devastating, it also inspired Bateman to do something positive in her memory. Bateman recently joined the sales team at the Revell Ford Lincoln dealership in Verona and, with his extensive sales background and his goal to assist those with cancer in the community he started a fundraising campaign. “Cancer is something that has affected my family as well as Larry [Revell]’s and I wanted to initiate some sort of effort whereby you could contribute and have some positive impact,” said Bateman. “I wanted to give back to the community and have some kind of larger direction,
so we started Cars for Cancer.” He noted that most of the donation money came from car sales, with a portion of each sale donated. Each department also contributed what they could. “For example, they gave a dollar per work order and as a collective group the money really started to add up,” Bateman explained. The campaign started in January of 2013 and by December the dealership had raised $6,000, just by doing their jobs and selling cars. “To Revell Ford’s credit, they came on board and we met in the middle. I contributed, they contributed, service and all of the departments pulled together and it all came together to get us to this amount,” added Bateman. The money was then donated to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHFK) and will be used in their Regional Cancer Centre. UHKF Executive Director, Denise Cumming, happily made the trek out to Verona to receive the cheque and she couldn’t be happier with
what Bateman and Revell Ford Lincoln have accomplished. “Noel and Larry, when I heard what your dealership was doing I was just thrilled,” said Cumming at the cheque presentation on Feb. 5. “My husband and I are seasonal residents here in Verona and we think of it as kind of our second home, so it really touched my heart to know that this business, in this community which has such wonderful passion for community building and for supporting the residents of this region, was making this incredible commitment to support cancer care in our hospitals. I thank you very sincerely. This is a tremendous result that you have been able to come up with and you must be very proud. We really appreciate your initiative and generosity.” The funds will go to the Cancer Centre and could be used for a variety of purposes like supplies, equipment, services for families in need of support, or psychsocial support for patients, to name a few options. Cumming emphasized the
impact of the donation, not only on the centre, but also on the patients. “It is meaningful for patients to see businesses out in the community that are stepping up to support them and help provide the best possible care and facilities. It is really encouraging for them and for us. They see different areas that are sponsored by different companies and it really makes them feel like the community is behind them.” Revell Ford Lincoln and Bateman are certainly happy to give the support and they hope to keep contributing to the community in a positive way. Bateman is unsure of where things will go from here, but feels like the Cars for Cancer campaign was a good way to end 2013. “Now we are moving with positive force into 2014 and making some decisions about what direction we are going to take from here. In the end it feels really great to know that we made a worthy contribution to UHKF. This is all new for me and it was incredibly rewarding. It was a really positive experience.”

Gazette Column — It’s perhaps cliché to say that this year’s Frontenac Heritage Festival in Central Frontenac (Feb. 14-16, all over the Township) will be the ‘biggest and best ever’ but there are indications that in its eighth year, the Festival is showing signs of maturity that bode well for its future. “I’m very excited,” said Mayor Janet Gutowski, whose brainchild the Festival originally was. “We’ve added a lot of new events and there’s been a bit of ebb and flow. “Crow Lake pulled out this year but Bob Miller and Mike Procter moved their (pioneer camping event) to Arden and it meshes very well with the trappers’ display.” Fellow Council member Tom Dewey, who’s also been a driving force since the first year, is also “very excited” and pleased with the way things have grown in Arden. “The trappers association is back this year,” he said. “We had them in the first year (in Sharbot Lake) but this year should be even better because of the tie-ins with the historical society display and all the events at the Legion. “And we’ve even got (chainsaw) woodcarver Robin DuRuchie and I hear he’s pretty good.” A full schedule in Arden, Sharbot Lake and Tichborne is available on the Festival’s website https://sites.google.com/site/frontenacheritagefestival/home, including a link to a YouTube
video of previous years’ Polar Bear Plunges. Regular favourites will be returning, such as the Plunge, Peter Bell’s restored pioneer home, the craft show, the talent show, and crow’s feet at the Procter/Miller camp. Some things have changed a bit, however. “The craft show’s been moved to St. James Major (in Sharbot Lake) from Oso Hall this year because we wanted to have a warm-up spot for the snow drags,” said Gutowski. “There’ll be popcorn and hot chocolate plus fishing videos from Land O’Lakes Tourism.” But she also has another wrinkle up her sleeve for the Oso Hall this year. “Four years ago, the Olympics, particularly hockey, had an impact on the festival in that some people stayed home to watch that,” she said. “But this year, we have wifi in Oso Hall and although there doesn’t seem to be much going on Olympics-wise, we will have the capability to stream it into Oso Hall. “And you know, it might be fun to watch some Olympic events with a lot of other people in the hall.” One thing that’s still up in the air (so to speak) is the fireworks display on Saturday night. Previously, the fireworks were held at the ball diamond next to the high school in Sharbot Lake but all the renovations and such have made that a bit awkward for this year. But Gutowski promised there would be fireworks and also promised the location and time would be posted on the Festival website before the event.

FEBRUARY 17TH – FAMILY DAY- GARBAGE PICK UP CHANGES
Gazette News — Community groups looking to dip into the Township coffers for grants in South Frontenac Township will be facing some new rules following Council’s passage of a revised policy for such things at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. The new policy comes with a new name, Community Grants (formerly Community Funding) but it’s more than just the same old wine in a brand new bottle. Under the new policy, groups seeking funds will have to provide the Township with two copies of a letter of intent plus financial statements from the previous calendar year and a list of the current officers. Grants are limited to a maximum of $1,500, subject to availability of funds. Also, the service must be provided within the geographic boundaries of the Township, the organization must have been in existence for a minimum of two years and in the previous calendar year, have less than 75 per cent of its operating budget funded from government sources. The criteria for grants was also firmed up. For example, projects must have a “well-defined purpose and take place within the calendar year of receipt, provide a new or improved community service or a potential economic benefit and final reports on any previous year’s funding must have been received in order to be considered for the current year.
Due to the holiday, residents who would normally have garbage pickup on Monday February 17th will have their garbage picked up on Tuesday, February 18th, 2014. The regular pickup schedule will be in effect for the rest of the week.
INTERIM TAX BILLS Please note that interim tax bills which will include garbage bag tags will be issued the week of March 3rd, 2014. For further inquiries, please contact 613-376-3027 x 2200.

Grants will not be given to cover deficits or retire debt or to respond to annual fund drives to sustain support. Grants will not normally be given to contribute to major renovation or capital construction costs, to provide money for fundraising activities or to support operating expenses of established organizations or programs. In her report to Council outlining the new policies, Treasurer Louise Fragnito said, “Preference will be given to new projects/new groups but previously approved projects may also reapply and be approved for further funding if there is evidence that the program is developing successfully.” Coun. Al McPhail suggested the policy might need a bit of tweaking concerning financial statements. “That might be fine for smaller groups, but do we really want all of South Frontenac Community Services’ financial information?” McPhail said. “Also what’s the difference between ‘will not be given’ and ‘will not normally be given?’” “We’re indicating that there is not a preference for those types of grant requests with the not normally be given but that the request could go to committee for consideration,” said CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr.

Gazette Column — The budget battle at Frontenac County Council continued last week and it appears that the Council-imposed mandate of a 1 per cent levy increase is in sight. But that might not be enough for some councilors. Acting CAO/Treasurer Marian VanBruinessen took exception to accusations that staff hadn’t headed Council’s direction, firing back that she had presented them with two scenarios that would have resulted in either a 1 per cent decrease in the levy or a 1 per cent increase, but that didn’t seem to satisfy some councilors. While Dep. Warden Denis Doyle and Coun. Gary Davison made flanking maneuvres against the County’s reserve funds, the frontal attack was led by Coun. David Jones. “I reckon we’ve got the Frontenac Bank in place,” Jones said. “We’ve got bags of money, folks (and) we’ve got reserves everywhere. “We’ve got our own little bank here, we don’t need $5 million in reserves (and) why does the County get to hang on to this (money)?” In response to questioning from Jones, VanBruinessen responded that the County does indeed have adequate reserves “if you don’t take anything out.” She correctly pointed out that many of the reserve funds are for specific uses (such as the Fairmount Home auditorium project or trail construction) and said “we need $1.2 million for cash flow.”
“No, you don’t,” responded Jones. The County has already taken steps to reduce this year’s budget by taking last year’s $190,000 cost overrun on the K & P Trail out of this year’s contribution and begun looking at charging the three municipalities (North, Central and the Islands) for its planning services. But it appears that budget restraint might just be a buzz-word tactic for Jones, Doyle and Davison to take on their real objective — the County’s reserve funds system. “We’ve got 30 reserve funds and maybe 20 to 25 of them are OK, like the fund to buy ambulances,” said Doyle. VanBruinessen offered that the social service fund contributions could be cut because some of the County’s responsibilities in that area have been uploaded to the province. But she maintained that contributions to many of the funds were still necessary because unforeseen circumstance could wipe them out, leaving the County in a bind. Jones seemed okay with that, but continued against his pet peeve funds. “But get any contributions to sustainability and strategic planning out of there or else it’ll be gulled in a blink,” Jones said. Warden Bud Clayton rebuffed any notion that any perceived excess be directed back to the Townships. “We don’t have enough to meet our asset management plans,” he said. “If we give $3.4 million to the Townships, we’ll only have to levy it back.” Budget deliberations continue.

Photo/Courtesy of Glanmore National Historic Site mostly dogs, by Victorian British artist Horatio Couldery. It is his paintings that makes Glanmore’s art collection internationally significant. “William Secord, a noted expert in canine art, describes our collection as one of the most extraordinary collections of Victorian dog and animal art in the world,” Wakeling said. I find one of the most interesting areas of the home to be the basement, where you’ll see an exhibit that details the history of servants of the era. There’s a 19th century iron, sewing and cleaning equipment, uniforms and a history of the role of the servant. On one wall you’ll see a speaking tube, an early form of communication between the home’s many rooms. “Most people who visit relate

“We discovered a picture rail in that room when we removed the wallpaper,” said Wakeling. “It looks dramatically different now. We’ve gone from floral to a soft caramel color and there are two colors on the ceiling.” Before the wallpaper removal, the ceiling of the breakfast room was consolidated by injecting resin into the lath and plaster. “We repaired a big section of the ornamental cornice,” said Wakeling. “Some elaborate plaster had fallen and we reproduced that and reinstalled it.” Restorations have been ongoing since the museum opened in the 1970s, but the past five or six years have seen the bulk of the work completed. When you visit Glanmore, you can’t rush through. The house is idiosyncratic in many ways and each room takes time to explore. I remember being awe-struck the first time I visited several years ago. As you enter the grand mansion, the first thing you’ll see is an impressive suspended central column staircase – with no visible means of support. Wakeling explained that the invisible support is provided by large beams, running at an angle, encased in the stairs.

more to the servants than the Phillips,” said Wakeling. “Most of us have to prepare meals, do laundry and keep house just like the servants of that day.” During the March Break, caregivers and kids can take part in March Break Magic at Glanmore. “They’ll work as a team,” said Wakeling. “They work together to find artifacts. It’s a challenge looking for different objects. The home can be overwhelming and this allows them to focus and scan for one thing.” Children will also be taught to make a simple craft and to do a magic trick. “They’ll be able to perform it if they’d like,” said Wakeling. She noted that during March Break Magic, the winter hours will be extended and the home will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Then, on Mother’s Day, you can treat your favorite mom to a special treat. “People can expect a spectacular afternoon,” said Wakeling. “There will be a full-tiered tea service with sandwiches, scones, homemade jams and sweets followed by a cup of tea and then a guided tour.” There’s a caution. This is the second year this Mother’s Day Tea will be offered. Last year, the event sold out quickly. Tickets go on sale on February 28. The Mother’s Day Tea tickets are $25. In Our Opinion
The Sochi dilemma Gazette Editorial - After much debate and controversy, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi have arrived. The controversy started early with the anti-gay laws that were put in place in Russia, but that wasn’t the end of the story. Sochi continued to make headlines last week in reference to over- spending. This is, reportedly, the most expensive Olympic Games ever with a reported $51 billion being spent on infrastructure. Then as, media and athletes arrived in Sochi last week, there were reports of unfinished stadiums, hotels and even streets. Top all of that off with what many have described as over-thetop security measures, and Sochi doesn’t exactly seem like the most welcoming Olympic host. With all of this negative attention from the media, it is hard to focus on what the Olympics are really about – the athletes. Many have said that they will not be watching the games because of the controversy, but is that really the solution? It seems like a city that hosted the Olympics has some sort of controversy. In Beijing there were issues about security and silencing opinions from around the world. In Vancouver there were issues with weather, security (who can forget the fenced in Torch?) and a few technical difficulties. In London there were issues with social media and drug use.
Cutting County reserves is a good idea, it just doesn’t need the alienation factor Craig Bakay Reporter

Phil Leonard and Bill MacDonald urged fiscal responsibility. This they did with gusto and a conscientiousness rarely seen in such organizations. But there comes a point when such things probably should be reigned in a little, and although the methods of Frontenac County Coun. Dave Jones and crew might be a tad abrasive and over-the-top at times, it’s probably time things like this are looked at. The actual numbers are important, yes, as they are the measure. However, the philosophy is probably more paramount. Frontenac County reserves were getting a bit high - not that that in itself is a bad thing, but there is such a thing as having enough set aside for a rainy day, regardless of what the paperpushers at Queen’s Park might have to say about it. While philosophically in sync with Jones, Dep. Warden Denis Doyle and Coun. Gary Davison about the level of reserves and being responsible to ratepayers’ pocketbooks, I think it wouldn’t hurt those guys to tone down the rhetoric a tad when it comes to what amounts to criticism of the job VanBruinessen is doing.
First of all, she’s had to take on the extra responsibility of being CAO after Liz Savill left, not that that in itself is an excuse for anything. And second of all, had you guys paid attention, she did actually present you with what you asked for — a scenario for a less than 1 per cent increase in the levy to the Townships. VanBruinessen has shown a morethan-capable ability to squeeze funds when necessary and chances are seeing her as a valued ally rather than the enemy might bring better results. And of course, you’ll have to watch that you don’t go overboard on cutting for its own sake. Just ask Coun. John Purdon. Purdon, who rarely shows much emotion, was noticeably ready to rumble at the suggestion that funding for the K & P Trail be cut drastically. Not that Purdon was against culling the reserve herd, just that he had a good point when he forcibly pointed out that the section through South Frontenac was all but completed and now that it’s Central Frontenac’s turn for attention, Doyle et al were wanting to pull the plug. Yes, there is still room to lower reserves, just play nice for once guys.

Gazette Column — There’s a M*A*S*H episode where Hawkeye and B.J., in need of a generator, confront a supply sergeant who has three in his warehouse. Despite the 4077th’s desperate need, they just can’t convince the sergeant to part with his reserves because “if I gave you one, then I’d only have two and three is better than two. As ludicrous as that sounds, perhaps the reason it’s so funny is the recognition factor. Bureaucracy, be it military or civilian, can come up with some pretty ridiculous rationales for silly behaviour, such as hoarding. Now, on the one hand, the Frontenac County bureaucracy is to be commended for keeping the County in such good shape financially. They were charged with establishing and maintaining reserve funds (rainy day money to a certain extent) since the get-go when

While all of these controversies should not be ignored and we certainly aren’t trying to downplay the appalling things that are happening in terms of gay rights in Russia, we need to acknowledge the hard work and effort that the athletes have put into these games. In the end, they are the ones who have spent their entire lives preparing for these moments and they should not be clouded with controversy due to things they have no control over. They didn’t ask to compete in Russia and they certainly didn’t know that the situation would turn out like this, but they are trying to make the best of it and we, as viewers, should too. Canada is expected to do very well this year and we are definitely one of the favorites going into the games. If all of the reports are true, our athletes will dominate these games just as they did in Vancouver. So why not support them and ignore Russia? Share in the glory and listen to the stories. Support the athletes, and enjoy watching the Olympics.

Out Standing in Our Field
Aric McBay
Forgive me, reader: in a few paragraphs I am going to lie to you. But it’s for a good cause. Columnist
Out Standing in our Field - I live on a mixed family farm on Howe Island with a vegetable operation that feeds 150 families and a dairy herd. We have a small flock of laying hens and (depending on the season) meat chickens, ducks and lambs. The mixed family farm looks a bit like the popular image of a farm, Old MacDonald style, though it isn’t very common right now. When I meet people—especially people who aren’t farmers—they have a lot of questions about how things actually work for us. There’s a get-to-know-you game called “two truths and a lie. It works like this: one person makes three statements about, one of which is false. Their audience tries to guess which of the statements are real. So here are two truths and a lie about our farm in the winter. A) The water pipes in the barn are liable to freeze. B) Everyone gets to lay back relax for four months. C) We grow winter greens in our greenhouse. Did you guess? The lie, of course, is B. Winter (despite the fact that snow covers the field and there are no crops
there to tend) does not offer much of a break for most farmers. Let me explain. Winter means very different things for different parts of the farm. For my partner, Emily, who runs the vegetable enterprise, winter does mean a slowing of pace. When a hard frost comes around the beginning of November, the 22-week harvest season ends and the gardens are put to bed. Emily’s 60 hour work week reverts to a more reasonable 20 to 30 hour work week. Emily cleans up after the harvest season, tallies survey results from our members (direct customers) and does her bookkeeping. We plant some greenhouse crops and tend to stored root vegetables, work on indoor construction projects and generally try to catch up on anything that fell behind in the summer. By the time the new year rolls around, Emily is already hard at work organizing for the next growing season. She creates her new production plan and budget. She plots out the crops will be planted in each garden bed. She scours a desk full of seed catalogs and orders new varieties. She hires new staff. By February she is back to working 30 or 40 hours a week, a number that continues to increase as spring ap-
proaches. The situation in the dairy barn is much different. Rather than feeding themselves on pasture, the cows need to be fed baled hay that was cut in summer. The milking and everything else dairy cows need still happen in the winter, but chores are done in freezing temperatures, ice, and snow. As Emily’s father, Peter, is fond of pointing out, the harvest season for milk for dairy farmers never ends. It wasn’t always that way. A hundred years ago, limited access to tractors meant that feeding cows hay over the winter was even more challenging. So dairy farmers reduced production once they snow began to fly, which cut down on labour and feed requirements. This meant less fresh milk was avail-

Christmas and Thanksgiving. With limited food supplies and limited artificial light, they spent as much time as they could resting and sleeping, waiting out the long winter nights and trying not to spend unnecessary energy. The winter workload of vegetable farming does offer us some time for rest and reflection. It’s rare these days to have an occupation that offers some time to step back and truly consider how you are doing things, what went well and what could be improved before jumping back into the fray. It’s invaluable; it’s just not as much of a break as some people assume. Aric McBay is a farmer and author. He lives and works at an organic farm on Howe Island. able for sale, so preserved dairy products like cheese and butter were very important. These were produced locally and in large quantity in the summer months; a century ago there were several cheese factories on Howe and Wolfe Islands, which is where much of the summer’s milk production went. Two or three centuries earlier, the difference between summer and winter for farmers was even more dramatic. Farmers in the colder parts of Europe, like the French Alps, would more or less shut things down over the winter. Once they had collected their harvest they would slaughter many of the animals so they wouldn’t need to feed them over the winter, a main reason why we still have a tradition of feasting near the beginning of winter on holidays like

Mark Bergin
The new generation of jazz By Mark Bergin Columnist
There’s a mystique to jazz. Even the etymology of the word describing the music has been hidden behind the shrouds of time and urban legend. Researcher Daniel Cassidy has found a link between the first use of the word “jazz” and the Irish word “teas” (pronounced jass, which was the original pronunciation), which means heat, passion, excitement. That describes the music of Jon Batiste, jazz musician extraordinaire, who comes from a family of New Orleans musicians. When he was eight years old, Jon Batiste started to play drums. “There were already a lot of drummers in the family,” he says. “I was the youngest one and someone had to switch from drums. It was my mother’s intuition that I should play piano.” Not a bad call, mom. Batiste says he was an introspective child. Music was an ideal outlet for him. He was playing serious gigs by the time he was 15 years old. He moved to New York City to attend the prestigious Juilliard School, where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Music, studying jazz and classical piano. It was there that
he realized that music was going to be his life. “At Juilliard, you’re with other artists in the scene,” he says. “It hit me once I was in New York and at Juilliard that this was it. This was the place and this was the life for me.” The Juilliard School is also where he hooked up with the musicians who would form Stay Human. “We’d met before then,” he says. “The drummer and bass player had a trio formed in high school. They visited New Orleans and saw me perform. They said they’d heard about me. At Juilliard we hooked up as a band.” Stay Human percussionist Joe Saylor has also played with jazz legends. Like Batiste, he’s a graduate of The Juilliard. Classically-trained tuba player Ibanda Ruhumbika is almost single-handedly revolutionizing the use of tuba in jazz. The other Juilliard grad in Stay Human is alto saxophonist Eddie Barbash. Jon Batiste has played with music royalty like Wynton Marsalis, Prince, Harry Connick Jr, Jimmy Buffet and Lenny Kravitz. He regularly collaborates with jazz musician, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Cassandra Wilson. Steinway has named him one of their Performing Artists.
He’s been on stage in more than 40 countries and the settings include venues like Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He’s appeared in TV shows like Treme and in director Spike Lee’s film Red Hook Summer, for which he composed the Hammond B-3 organ music in the score. And, like Michael Bublé, and many others who consider New York the sacred ground of music, he’s also played on the New York Subway. That’s part of his goal of creating a grassroots movement encouraging accessibility and appreciation for the art of live performance. Batiste and his band, Stay Human, use Twitter and Facebook to announce their plans for performances in nontraditional venues like the New York subway. Batiste refers to these spontaneous gigs as loveriots. “That’s a great social experiment,” he says. “People from different backgrounds and eras ride mass transit together. A couple of times the police stopped us and gave us tickets. That’s crazy. The people were all loving it.” Batiste is big on music education for young people. At the age of 27, he’s already reaching out to those

Jazz and classical musician Jon Batiste works hard to make his music accessible. From New Orleans and now living in New York City, Batiste and his band Stay Human play famous concert halls like Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. They also take their music to the streets and perform in New York Subways. In the photo: percussionist Joe Saylor, Jon Batiste, saxophonist Eddie Barbash and Ibanda Ruhumbika on tuba Photo/Peter Lueders who will follow him. “We learn lessons from music that enhance the quality of our lives,” he says. “Think about the things we wouldn’t be able to express or take to a different level without music. It’s not just expression. We have meaningful lives because of the arts.” He devotes time to his philosophy that stresses the importance of the arts. He’s a travelling ambassador for Music Unites, a non-profit
organization dedicated to bringing music education to underprivileged children in underfunded inner city school systems. The organization works towards transforming inner city landscapes by empowering urban youth through music. “It’s an extension of what I do with education and going to schools and collaborating with people who want to do that on a higher level,” he says. He’s also the Artistic Director of the Jazz Museum in Harlem in New York and is involved in music outreach programs. His advice to the generation that will follow in his own footsteps is to get to do it all with passion. “Move to the place where the scene is the most high energy and most fertile for what it is they want to pursue,” he says. “Find all the people playing the style or creating the kind of artistic expression they admire, and be with them, play with them, work with them.” He explained that his musical style is a reflection
of the diversity of New Orleans and New York’s music. Batiste believes in high musical standards and wants to pass that conviction to future generations. He lectures and gives master classes around the world to promote music. From Batiste’s perspective, the musical world of our era is an exciting place in which to live. He compares the present world, with technology catalyzing diversity, to the diverse cultural milieu where jazz was born. You’ll hear diverse sounds in Batiste’s and Stay Human’s repertoire. Whether it’s an old traditional song like St. James Infirmary, his modern
version of Let God Lead or his groundbreaking use of the harmonaboard (known as the melodica), Batiste creates crossover sounds that combine jazz, classical and just about every other form of music. If you’d like to hear Jon Batiste and Stay Human perform, you have a chance on April 5 at the Grand Theatre. Tickets are available at www.kingstongrand.com. Gazette Lifestyle - Mother had searched the summer kitchen and the wood shed. She couldn’t find it anywhere. And it was Sunday night, and she was getting ready for the Monday morning wash. The big copper tub was sitting on the back of the Findlay Oval full of water at the ready. Into this tub Mother would put all the white clothes that had to be washed. They would soak all night, with the hope that she wouldn’t have to use as much javel water on them in the morning. Heaven forbid that the whites wouldn’t be sparkling when put on the clothes line for the entire world to see! Mother liked to have everything set when she was ready to tackle what would turn out to be an allday job. That meant the copper tub was full of whites on the stove, the rest of the laundry was sorted into heaps on the kitchen floor, and the homemade soap cut into slivers and sitting in a pie plate. And of course, the long wood “pinchers” used to take the boiled whites out of the tub, and put them into the square laundry tub, ready for scrubbing on the washboard, would be sitting on a chair too. They looked exactly like the tweezers Aunt Lizzie used to pull
out stray eyebrows when she came from Regina to visit, only these were about two feet long, made of wood held together at one end with a bolt, and strong enough that Mother could easily grab a goodly portion of white clothes out of the tub without touching the hot water. Well, the “pinchers” were nowhere to be found! It was just before supper, and Mother sent me back out to the wood shed and the summer kitchen to have another look. I even looked behind the sauerkraut barrel. No sign of the “pinchers”. “Well, they have to be somewhere,” she said, putting the finishing touches to supper. Father and the three brothers came in from the barns and the milking, and washed up at the bench near the back door. We all took our places at the old pine table, and after Grace was said by Father, and before anyone could dig in to the mounds of food, Mother commented that she couldn’t find the wood tongs, which was the term she used. Father called them pinchers, but he knew what she meant, and that was all that was important. “Must be out in the summer kitchen,” he said. Mother assured him a thorough search had been made of both the summer kitchen and the wood shed. “Gone...just plain gone,” she said. “I know where they are,” Earl said, giving a sidelong glance to-
wards Emerson. Emerson started to squirm and asked Everett to pass the potatoes. Earl continued. “They’re out on the chopping block behind the silo.” Everything stopped dead...just like a Hoppalong Cassidy movie reel that had broken down once in the O’Brien theatre in Renfrew. “Ouch,” Earl yelled, and we all knew Emerson had given him a good kick under the table. “Whatever are the laundry tongs doing out on the chopping block,” Mother asked, her voice rising to a high pitch. The chopping block was where the chickens met their doom and it was also where the fish the boys caught by ice-fishing in the Bonnechere were cleaned. Everett was usually the one who performed the dastardly deed, because even though Emerson was rambunctious and full of spunk, he could never bring himself to working the chopping block. The same went for cleaning fish. In fact, he loved to fish, summer or winter, but Everett or Earl always had to bait the line for him! He didn’t want a thing to do with a live fish from the time the line went in the water, until it was served on a dinner plate! And when the fish sat in a pail of water beside the chopping block ready to be cleaned, Emerson wouldn’t even touch one to take it out of the pail and hand it to Everett. That
is, until he figured Mother’s laundry tongs would do just fine. He could grab a fish, slap it on the block, and Everett could do the rest. It didn’t take all day to figure out why the tongs were out at the chopping block! There wasn’t much talk around the supper table that Sunday night. Emerson got up from the table, put on his heavy coat, hat and boots, and headed for the silo. When he brought the tongs back into the kitchen, Mother already had a granite pail of water boiling on the front of the stove. The tongs were put into it, with a goodly dose of vinegar. She swore the clothes would smell of fish for at least a month of washings. And there the tongs sat, boiling away until bedtime. No one ever knew if Emerson ever got over his aversion to touching uncooked fish, but we all knew he never went near the tongs again. Mother made sure of that. Every Sunday night after that, and even before filling the tub with water, or gathering up the whites, she got the tongs out of the summer kitchen, slapped them on a chair by the stove, and her look dared anyone to lay a finger on them. Guilty Pleasures: Eat Your Heart Out Columnist
We ate our hearts out at the second annual Guilty Pleasures fundraiser in support of Loving Spoonful. On the evening of Feb. 3, eight local chefs came together in the Chez Piggy kitchen to raise awareness of this worthy cause. Dubbed the “heartbreaker event of the year”, guests joined local chefs from Chez Piggy, Le Chien Noir, Olivea, Bella Bistro and new this year Pan Chancho bakery, Atomica and Days on Front. Each chef prepared a course of torn, ripped or shredded tasting features for our dining pleasure. Loving Spoonful is a non-profit organization based in Kingston. Their goals are to enhance access to healthy food in an empowering, inclusive and environmentally sustainable manner. Over 30 per cent of Canada’s food is wasted, which translates to almost $27 billion every year. “Last year’s Guilty Pleasures event was a huge success and so much fun for all those involved,” said the 2013 host, Stev George, owner and chef at Olivea Restaurant. “It created a sense of community among the chefs.” “I believe that the work being done by Loving Spoonful is bold and important,” said Zoe Yanovsky, owner of Chez Piggy restaurant. “Their efforts to enhance access to healthy food for all deserves our attention and support and I am thrilled to have Chez Piggy and Pan Chancho participate in the Guilty Pleasures dinner. To be able to work together with our talented culinary neighbors and put what we do best on the table seems the most fitting way in which we can contribute. As a frequenter and a fan of all of the participating restaurants, we are in for one hell of a great meal - and I thank them all.” “Loving Spoonful collects surplus fresh food from restaurants, caters and farmers and delivers it to approximately 20 shelters, including hot meal programs and other social service agencies that serve the community of Kingston” said Mara Shaw, Executive Director of Loving Spoonful. “We are incredibly
thankful for the support of these local chefs and business and members of the community who came out to support us.” The crisp, cold evening was quickly forgotten upon entering the Chez Piggy dinning room. At 6 p.m. the first course by chef Jay Legere of Days on Front was served, featuring a tuna tartate with a citrus vinaigrette, avocado puree on a crostini paired with a ‘Blood and Sand’ cocktail. The sweet, zippy drink was a perfect match to the fish. From that point on you just knew the evening was going to be superb. I sat at a table with a jovial bunch of individuals who were just as excited as I was to try the many courses made by Kingston’s talented chefs. The Master of Ceremonies was local businessman, Adam Koven, who also volunteered his time. He didn’t miss a beat as each chef sprung from the kitchen, showcasing his or her delicious culinary creation for us to enjoy. Typically the chef is behind the scenes creating, Wizard of Oz “man behind the curtain” style. This evening allowed us the opportunity to get to know the chefs about town and for them to work alongside each other. We are truly blessed in Kingston to have such amazing talent. Home base, chef Ian Arthur from Chez Piggy prepared ‘Broken and Bitter’ skewered veal hearts on a bed of bitter greens. Each tasting had a heartbreaker theme. The Atomica chef’s was called “Opposites Attract”, Bella Bistro’s “Black Seoul”, Olivea’s “Torn Apart” and Le Chein Noir’s “Highland Fling”. We finished with “Cold Hearted” sour cherry praline ice cream and an “I’ll Break Your Heart’ chocolate spoon cookie by Pan Chancho bakery. The veal hearts were a first taste of heart for many. Served rare, each morsel melted in your mouth. (In fact, I am still dreaming of them) “I thought I would try heart, especially for the heartbreaker theme,” said chef Ian Arthur. “And, because the original owner of Chez Piggy, Zal, used to try and serve hearts on the menu each year but never really had many takers,” he laughed. It was a fitting tribute given that this month marks the 35th anniver-
sary of the opening of Chez Piggy restaurant. Owners Rose Richardson and Zal Yanovsky were long supporters of the community. They renovated the once abandoned limestone stable and launched a dining experience that blended grace and gusto, taste and imagination. Since then, ‘The Pig’, as regulars refer to it, has been a favorite destination for food lovers for five star dining, takeout, casual drinks or long lunches on the patio. Today their daughter, Zoe Yanovsky, owns and operates Chez Piggy (68R Princess Street) and Pan Chancho bakery (44 Princess Street). “Guilty Pleasures was a smash success!” said Zoe following the evening. “And it was a pleasure and an honor to be involved. “Being active in the community is an inherent part of our business - it began with my parents early on. Our major areas of support are The Food Sharing Project, The Rose and Zal Annual Breakfast, The United Way, The Limestone Learning Foundation’s Crystal Ball, The Food Bank, Kingston Literacy & Skills and now Loving Spoonful, among many others. “I believe that a healthy and prosperous community goes hand in hand with the health and well being of our small local businesses.”
While there may be no hearts on the menu this Valentine’s Day, treat yourself and your partner to a night out at Chez Piggy, pre-order dinner from Pan Chancho or any of these other local chefs’ restaurants. Guar-

Canadian Cat Association holds national show in Kingston By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Events –Cuddly kittens, household cats, and purebred cats and kittens – that’s what Kingstonians will see if they come out to the National Canadian Cat Association (CCA) show at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour. For new breeder and show volunteer Suzanne Sinclair, the show is a chance to show off her new cats and interact with other breeders and cats. “There is a large committee of us that organizes and works to make the show successful,” explained Sinclair. “There are usually 140-150 cats registered for the event. It is a really fun
event and you don’t have to be part of the competition to enjoy it. Everyone is just excited to be there and celebrate cats. It is really entertaining and you really get to see the cats and their personalities shine. And, you get to see some cat antics too, which are always fun.” Cats compete in four different categories: household cats; championship purebreds, which are unfixed breeding cats; purebred fixed cats and purebred kittens. Each category is judged by a panel of eight judges over the course of the weekend and then Best in Show is awarded on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Elaine Gleason has been a judge for CCA for 27 years and sees it as a fun and interesting hobby, so interesting
that her husband joined in the fun 10 years ago. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s also nice because you get to travel to all of the different shows and meet different people,” said Gleason. While judging the purebred categories is pretty strict and judges need to follow specific rules, the household category is much more flexible and can be more fun for both the judges and the spectators. “The different classes have written standards for scoring and each breed has its own description of features and how to judge those features,” added Gleason. “In the household pet class we have a bit more flexibility and we judge on personality, health, cleanli-
ness and overall showmanship. The cats that are more playful and have a lot of personality usually dominate that class and they are fun to see.” This year marks the sixth year for the show in Kingston and Gleason is always happy to return to the city for the show. “The people of Kingston really come out and enjoy the show and support it. We also have a number of vendors there for people to shop at and we also help different rescue groups in the area. They come out to the show and set up booths and will be selling stuff to help raise funds for their organizations,” added Gleason. These organizations also enter cats in the competition sometimes. They
enter cats that are in need of a home in the household category. These cats, explained Gleason, generally have a great personality and sometimes even win the competition and end up leaving with a new home. Overall, the cat show is a fun weekend for cat lovers and breeders and Sinclair urges people to come check it out. “The only problem with the cat show is that you want to take home every cat you see. They are all so different and unique and it is so nice to see them all together.” The National CCA show takes place at Portsmouth Olympic Harbor Feb. 22-23. Pine Meadow makes pitch to Frontenac County Council for funding No video games on By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — A delegation representing Pine Meadow Nursing Home (PMNH) in Northbrook was at Frontenac County Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting last week in Glenburnie once again requesting funding in the amount of $25,000 annually for the next 10 years. While technically in Lennox & Addington County, the facility is literally right on the border with Frontenac County and currently 12 of its 60 clients are from Frontenac County (along with nine from the City of Kingston); however, it has had as many as 63 per cent from Frontenac County, said PMNH administrator Bonnie George. “Also many of our 75 staff members live in Frontenac County, the administrator lives in Sydenham and the chair of the management committee lives in North Frontenac,” she said. The not-for-profit was built in 1993 with community and provincial funds as a Class B facility. It is currently in the process of upgrading to a Class A, and with the additional staffing requirements
and training required under the Long Term Care Home Act and HST impacts, PMNH has been facing an increased financial burden, she said. “We can’t close beds or refuse resident admissions as the need in our area is too great but the growing gap between costs and the government funding to support housekeeping, laundry, maintenance and dietary related services has grown,” she said. “(Also) when PMNH opened, a great deal of its equipment was purchased used and needs replacement now and much of the facility needs to be refurbished/upgraded. “We also have plans to provide a dialysis lab, physiotherapy department and a cardio rehab facility that will also serve outpatients from the North Country, including L & A and Frontenac Counties.” This isn’t the first time PMNH has come to Frontenac County Council asking for funds. Previous attempts have met with varying degrees of success, but each successful attempt resulted in a ‘onetime’ grant with Frontenac County Councils reluctant to see the facility become a ‘line item’ in its budget. Council was non-committal but George said she was opti-
mistic after the presentation. “I feel good about this one,” she said. “I’ve been administrator for five years and this is the third time I’ve come to this Council. “The first time, I knew it was ‘no way,’ the second I was hopeful but this time, I know that seniors’ housing is part of their (Frontenac County) strategic plan and supporting PMNH makes sense as part of
that plan.” Fellow presenter, board member and North Frontenac Coun. Betty Hunter was also optimistic but wanted the current councilors to come and tour the facility. “If they would just come and feel the warm, homey atmosphere there . . .” she said. “Right now, it’s just a building to them.”

SFCSC launches first ever enhancement campaign By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – Southern Frontenac Community Services Corporation (SFCSC) is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year and as part of this milestone, they are also launching their first ever Enhancement Campaign. The campaign is a fund raising initiative that will enhance health and social services in the area and to kick off the campaign, SFCSC hosted a kick-off breakfast at the Grace Centre on Feb. 7. Community members, local politicians, business owners and media were invited to hear about the new program and campaign chair and SFCSC board member, Mark Segsworth explained the importance of the campaign. “The service area for our organization stretches from the 401 all the way up to Highway 7. We are a grassroots organization that is dedicated to enabling and enriching the lives of those in our community. Demand for our services is increasing and we want to continue to meet that demand. In order to do this we came up with the Enhancement Campaign and we have set out a goal of $50,000 to be raised by the end of June this year.” SFCSC is partially funded by the government, but in 2011 funds were frozen at a set dollar amount for each year. Unfortunately, as costs for services rise funding does not, so the organization has

been forced to come up with their own plan to maintain services. As part of the kick-off breakfast, SFCSC welcomed keynote speaker Dr. David Sinclair, emeritus professor of physiology and fellow of the School of Policy Studies of Queen’s University. Sinclair commended the Corporation for undertaking this fundraising campaign and acknowledged how difficult it is to fundraise in communities. “This is quite the challenge and it is even more challenging because it is your first year and fundraising today is a very crowded and competitive game,” said Sinclair. “It has lots of teams and lots of players and many of them have long and successful track records. They also have lists of reliable donors and in some cases large advertising and marketing campaigns. SFCSC is kind of like a new hockey team without any draft choices, newbie’s going into the fundraising game and that is a daunting task.” Sinclair continued with a more optimistic tone, informing attendees that according to a poll done recently by the Bank of Montreal, over three quarters of Canadians gave to charity last year. The average donation was $580, which is pretty impressive. The top two causes that Canadians gave to last year were health services and poverty. “This is great news for your cause,” added Sinclair, “Canadians want to support what
you do here and that is encouraging.” The breakfast concluded with some encouraging words and thanks from SFCSC executive director David Townsend, who acknowledged the generous contributions made by his own staff. “one hundred per cent of the staff at SFCSC contributes back to this agency. Not only do they receive salaries that have been frozen, but every staff member is giving back and stepping up and showing that this is something that they believe in and want to support further. I want to thank my staff for doing that and showing their commitment to this organization.” Community members showed their commitment too with numerous groups making donations at the kick-off including Sydenham District Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 496, John Trousdale and South Frontenac Township mayor Gary Davidson. Segsworth was overwhelmed by the support and impressed that their goal of $50,000 was already within reach. “With contributions made today, we have already raised 20 per cent of our goal. I am confident that we will get there and confident that we will surpass it and that is all thanks to this great community.” For more information on the Enhancement Campaign and how to contribute, visit www.sfcsc.ca

subject and hear what they have to say, perhaps because I yearn to believe that they are rule and I am the exception. Fourteen years ago, Jennifer Gargaro, then a new massage therapist fresh out of school, attended the birth of a friend’s baby. For her, the experience was life-changing. “It’s probably one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen,” she says. “Immediately after, I was trained as a doula.” Later, one of Gargaro’s clients introduced her to the book Birthing from Within by Pam England. The book and its corresponding prenatal classes equip pregnant women and their partners with powerful mind-body techniques in order to cope as well as possible with the pain of labour. According to Birthing from Within philosophy, “the essence of childbirth preparation is self-discovery, not assimilating obstetric information.” “I fell in love with it,” Gargaro says of the book. “I wanted to do the training then and there, but it took me about 10 years to actually get it started.” Two years ago, she began to offer Birthing from Within classes in Kingston, using her massage therapist training as a means of enhancing the experience for clients. On her website, Gargaro explains that her clients will learn “a variety of paincoping techniques, which will help you cultivate the power of mindfulness, meditation and self-hypnosis. In addition to visualizations and learning age old practices from wisdom traditions, you will explore the wise use of drugs and epidurals should they become necessary.”
In order to best explain to me how she works – both as a massage therapist and Birthing from Within instructor - Gargaro offered to give me a massage. Still somewhat skeptical, but never one to turn down a free massage, I agreed. The experience was unlike any massage I’ve ever had. Gargaro focused on creating more space in my body by re-aligning the connective tissues around my neck and vertebrae that had moved out of place. The whole way through, we communicated. She would press down on a spot and tell me to focus on relaxing that area, and see in my mind’s eye the little “dorsal fin”-like features of the spine, etc. moving back into place. Gradually, the pressure would start to decrease in each respective spot. “Are you releasing pressure?” I asked Gargaro, but she assured me she was not; the release I was felt was due to space being created in my body. The experience was very emotional and sometimes painful, but by the end I felt light and free, as though a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. “In massage, I project other images,” Gargaro said to me afterwards, explaining that visualizing the physical change happening in my mind allowed my body to follow suit. “And in birth, again, how do we remove our mind from what our body’s work is meant to do? Sometimes an image can come up that can help with that. Even though the body feels so uncomfortable, so painful…if we were able to hold that image in our mind while our body has its little

Gazette Editorial – Following the difficult birth of my own daughter, I’m an admitted skeptic when it comes to claims that the process of birthing a baby can be a beautiful, spiritual experience. Still, I’m always interested to meet people with a different, more positive perspective on this

freakout and feels really awful, we will be taking the mind out of the picture so our bodies then can open up.” In Birthing from Within, the trancelike state a woman enters when in labour is referred to as “Labourland”. The goal is for the pregnant woman and her partner to learn how to maintain this “primitive” state throughout the birthing process in order to allow the body to do what it needs to do. “We are pulled out of that right side, primitive brain into the left side, logic brain when we are asked questions or are asked to make decisions,” Gargaro explains. “Once that switch happens back into that left side logical brain, we can really slow labour or stall labour. It doesn’t progress. So creating that right-sided brain focus or intention is imperative through birth.” She emphasizes that her classes also focus quite a bit on the role of birth partners, who too often feel pushed to the side. “There are tangible ways that dads and other mothers can support mom and actually make a difference in the way she births. So for me it’s about creating a team-like atmosphere and making sure you’re on the same page and that the supportive partner knows exactly what mom does like and what works for her, because it’s going to be different from what works for them.” Following the birth, Gargaro also offers postpartum home visits, where she performs massage and assists families in settling into their new life. “As in birth, a shattering occurs of the woman and afterwards it’s about picking up those pieces and putting them back together again,” she explains. “The problem is that they don’t go back together the same way. So the massage is geared towards how we can help mother collect just a few of those pieces after they’ve been shattered, to set them on a track where they feel a little more confident.” Gargaro notes that it’s a pleasure to be able to help young families along this journey. “Once your baby is born, so too are you, the parents, born. The transformation process of the family and the integration of that is what feeds my soul.” As for me, I’m not sure yet if I will have another child. All the same, it’s comforting to meet and chat with with people like Gargaro, who are able to view the birth process in such a positive light. If I ever do become pregnant again, I’ll know who to call. Gargaro’s next Birthing from Within begins March 18 at the Community Midwives of Kingston building. Apple sweet bread good for breakfast or snack time Gazette Lifestyle - Coconut bread or sweet bread, as it’s often called in the islands, is a heavy quick bread that can be served at breakfast or with a cup of tea in the afternoon. The addition of apple makes it moister and replaces the candied fruit.

HOROSCOPES
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 – Aries, strange forces seem to be working against you, but fortunately you are prepared for anything that comes your way. Allow for some time to get things settled. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 – Taurus, keep a firm hand on your wallet so you can avoid spending well beyond your means. It is best if you avoid making any impulse purchases in the near future. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 – Gemini, listen carefully when a family member comes to you with some sage advice. Even a seemingly relaxed conversation may prove fruitful. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 – Cancer, you may seem rushed this week, but resist the temptation to go faster than is comfortable for you. Take your time so things are done right the first time. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 – Leo, you may have so much fun this week that you don’t realize you have been getting work done in the process. Your attitude is even inspiring others around you. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 – Take a step back when you don’t see eye to eye with a colleague, Virgo. Disagreements can quickly escalate, so keep a level head and take all things into consideration. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 – Libra, your intuition and ability to work with people closely will make your life much more enjoyable. Make use of these talents as you pursue a new career path. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 – Falling into a slump just isn’t your style, Scorpio. Even if things don’t seem to be going your way, your attitude and work ethic will make the most of the situation. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 – Sagittarius, playing games with someone can be fun, but don’t let things turn into a serious rivalry. Focus on being lighthearted this week. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 – Capricorn, your responsible nature helps those in your care to feel safe and secure. It is good to show others how much they mean to you, and you have been doing it correctly. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 – Some well-hidden information could come to the surface, and you will have the ability to put it to use, Aquarius. Just don’t let the power go to your head. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 – Pisces, you must deal with a potentially delicate matter in the days to come. Keep a cool head and remain confident.

When times were tough, 1932 Chevrolet coupe sold for $14.75 Gazette Lifestyle – Dennis Foeller, age 73, writes from Sharbot Lake, Ontario, a small town near Hwy. 7 between Kaladar and Perth: “Hi Bill, I was 17 with a summer job in a small town named Port Union near Highland Creek in the Scarborough area of Toronto. I made windows and doors for a sash and frame company named McBride’s Lumber. The money I made helped pay for my bus fare and my books to go to Trade School in Toronto. “In my third summer at McBride’s, a friend told me about a car for sale by Bob Braithwaite, the scrap man who lived at the corner of my street, Centennial Road. THE FUN
this old car, a black 1932 Chevrolet coupe with a rumble seat and six spoked wheels, two of which were in the front two fenders. It seated two up front. “Bob came out of his house and said ‘Do you like her?’ I said ‘Oh yes!’ I asked ‘Does she run?’ and he said ‘Oh yes.’ Then I asked how much he wanted for her. He paused, chewed on his old cigar for a minute, then said ‘Fifteen dollars.’ I said ‘I’ll take her!’ Getting it home was the fun part but now I’ll get to the sad part. Dr. Jack Shaver of Brantford, Ontario, supplied this photo of his 1932 Chevrolet coupe for this story. “In my last year of high school, money was scarce and I asked Dad if he could help me out. He said ‘No, to Bob and asked if he would buy it said ‘I fixed the soft patch roof and for it?’ I said ‘Fifteen dollars.’ ‘Well, times are tough, you’ll have to sell back. He paused with his stogy, then put in a new window on the driver’s son, the best I can do is $14.75.’ “I was almost speechless, but the your car.’ Reluctantly I went back asked: ‘What did you do to her?’ I side.’ ‘How much did you give me deal was made. I sure hope she found a good home.” A 1932 Chevrolet Sport Coupe with rumble seat had an Oshawa factory list price of $832. How? By taking action to reduce the risk factors that are within your control. That means factors like high blood pressure, eating an unhealthy diet, being physically inactive, smoking or being overweight. Nine out of Ten people have at least one risk factor and 40% have three or more. The Heart and Stroke Foundation website (www.heartandstroke.ca <http://www. heartandstroke.ca> ) is full of information and tools to help Canadians understand their individual risk factors and start making changes. For example, the newly updated Heart&Stroke Healthy Weight Action Plan is a personalized, step-by-step online program that helps you assess your current eating and activity habits, setting goals and taking steps to reach and maintain a healthy weight. Another way Canadians can Make Death Wait is by donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation during the annual Heart Month campaign this month. Every donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation supports investment in life-giving research, advocacy, health promotion and educational programs. It’s all aimed at reducing the impact of heart disease and stroke, while helping to give Canadians longer, fuller lives.
Kingston
for Kingston and the Islands
Reduce risk factors and do what you can to support Heart Month.
While those numbers are shocking, there is good news for Canadians, says Area Manager Shaun Cerisano. “It’s possible to change the odds against heart disease and stroke. It’s possible to Make Death Wait. 80% of heart disease and stroke IS preventable”

Be generous when a volunteer visits your home. Money raised goes towards lifesaving research. 9 in 10 Canadians have at least one risk factor! Help us to reach our goal of $ 184,000. Heart and Stroke Foundation Kingston Office -720 Progress Ave. Phone 613 384 2871
Heart disease and stroke take 1 in 3 Canadians before their time. And it’s the #1 Killer of women in Canada, 7 times more likely than breast cancer and taking more female lives than all cancers combined.
