County Council lends support to New Leaf Link’s grant application By Craig Bakay Reporter
Kate MillerHeidke: quirky & brilliantly talented Pg. 26
Gazette News — Frontenac County Council lent its support to New Leaf Link’s (NeLL) application for Trillium Grant funding at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. In his presentation to Council, Howard Smith, president of New Leaf Link, said he was at Council to secure “a local partner to bring credibility to our grant request” of up to $75,000 per year for five years. (Last year, the average grant in the Quinte, Kingston and Rideau regions amounted to about $49,000, he said.) “We are a small organization that owns no buildings, has no paid staff, no excess levels of administration that relies entirely on donations and fees from clients,” he said.
NeLL has been operating in the area for the past five years, creating programs that support the continuing educations and meaningful occupation of youth and adults with developmental disabilities such as autism spectrum conditions, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, acquired brain injury and other neurological conditions. Over those past five years, it has cultivated relationships with the Parish of Loughborough, the Iron Maidens, the Harrowsmith Women’s Institute, Harrowsmith Oddfellows & Rebekahs, Portland Community Caring, St. Patrick’s Council and the Sydenham Lions Club, he said. They’d also like to establish a relationship with Sydenham High School to “collaborate and build reciprocities on projects with SHS that promote socio-cultural, fitness, and other
educational exchanges with school-to-community students, especially those who are about to transition,” he said. To the grant application, Smith said NeLL is applying for operating costs to pay part-time independent workers to broaden is current network of teachers, mentors, guests, students and support workers. Specifically, they’d like funding to pay for a project manager to initiate and oversee multiple projects and seek complimentary grants and an adapted technology teacher/consultant to offer an additional day of programming to dovetail technology supports with NeLL projects. Both positions would entail 10 hours per week for 40 weeks. However, Smith insisted while they were looking to add these resources, it’s not an expansion program.
“Expansion is not our priority,” he said. County Council gave its support, with several councilors speaking enthusiastically in support. “Congratulations on the work you do,” said Coun. Janet Gutowski. “You are an excellent organization that fits in very well in our rural area. “This program fills huge gaps in an underserviced area.” “I have a great deal of admiration for a small organization without bureaucracy who are not looking to expand,” said Coun. John Inglis. “It sounds like a good program,” said Dep. Warden Denis Doyle. “Come to South Frontenac Council if you need more support,” said Coun. Gary Davison.

Gazette News — Frontenac County Council passed its budget bylaw at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie, but it wasn’t without its dissenters, notably South Frontenac Mayor Gary Davison and Coun. David Jones (Frontenac Islands). Davison (who as South Frontenac Mayor has two votes) and Jones voted against the bylaw package (in recorded votes) at both the first/second readings and third reading stages, as well as a resolution to accept budget changes, making both all three votes 5-3 (Warden Bud Clayton was absent from the meeting). Davison took exception with the contention that the approved increase was 2.47 per cent. “I don’t agree with the numbers,” he said. “It’s more like 4 per cent.” Jones, on the other hand, had even more to say on the matter. “As with previous budgets, this one is rife with waste and mismanagement,” Jones said. “It rewards inefficiency and rampant absenteeism. “When is enough, enough?” Jones went on to say he hoped the County would “attract a new CAO that will restore accountability” and chastised his fellow Councilors as well. “This isn’t a budget, it’s a laissez-faire document,” he said. “This is an indictment on our term of office. “Shame on us.” ••• As the approval authority for subdivisions in Frontenac County, Council gave its endorsement to the Kennebec Shores Waterfront Community development at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. The development is a 260-acre, 24-lot subdivision located along the south shore of Kennebec Lake east
of Henderson Road and north of Hwy 7 in Central Frontenac Township’s Kennebec District. It is the developers’ second project in Frontenac County, the first being Badour Farm in South Frontenac in 2006. Mark Snider, spokesperson for the development, said: “the subdivision is one of the first to be subject to the stringent requirements of Central Frontenac’s Official Plan. It was carefully designed to respect sensitive natural features and ensure the long-term sustainability of the lake. “The developers worked closely with the Township and the Kennebec Lake Asssociation to ensure consistency with the Official Plan’s development and environmental policies.” “This was the first subdivision in Central Frontenac since amalgamation,” said Mayor Janet Gutowski. “There were others that existed before we had the current planning procedures. “I’m looking forward to seeing some lovely homes and increased assessment.” ••• Frontenac County Council accepted a report on absenteeism amongst its employees but the numbers led several councilors to wonder what was being done to “mitigate” the circumstances. While absenteeism was down at Fairmount Home in 2013 over 2012 (to 11,519.26 hours from 14,800.14 hours), it increased in the corporate services sector (to 977.08 hours from 481.25) and emergency and transportation services (to 21,913.19 hours from 19,652.53 hours). In January of 2014, the time lost to absenteeism in emergency and transportation services were 3,103.25 hours, as compared with 1,253.50 hours in 2012 and 1.484.82 hours in 2013. “We’ve moved up 11 per cent in emergency services despite mitigation promises from the previous CAO and (director of emergency services Paul Charbonneau),” said Coun. David Jones.

The ‘smallest lot I’ve ever come across’ is no more in South Frontenac By Craig Bakay Reporter
TOWNSHIP OF SOUTH FRONTENAC
Gazette News — An application to add land to four existing waterfront residential lots was readily approved by South Frontenac Council at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham and would hardly be worthy of much notice except for one fact. “At 0.18 acres, this is the smallest lot I’ve ever come across,” said Planner/Dep. Clerk Lindsay Mills. The four lots on the north end of Howes Lake include adding 0.35 acres to the 0.18 lot; 0.4 acres to a 0.43 acre lot; 0.5 acres to a 0.45 acre lot; and 0.3 acres to a 0.41 acre lot. “Even though these lots are small, they are fully developed with a dwelling/cottage and accessory structures,” Mills said. “These additions (and subsequent rezoning) should be seen as a very positive outcome as the additions would afford each property owner the opportunity to better accommodate areas for septic, wells, principle buildings, accessory buildings and parking. “This, in fact, was the intent of the Official Plan policies for the creation of large rural lots (and) the Planning Department fully supports the rezoning application.”

Vandewal to wonder about how to maximize returns on old equipment as opposed to tradein value. “Could we get more as scrap or from an auction?” he said. “We had quite a collection of old equipment, which some might call a scrap heap,” said Public Works Manager Mark Segsworth. “We held an auction for it and we might have been better off just hauling it for recycling ourselves.” “But there’s the potential to get more from an auction,” said Vandewal. “But we might get less too,” said Mayor Gary Davison. ••• South Frontenac renewed its agreement with the Kingston Humane Society to act as the Township pound for stray animals but a couple of Councilors took exception to a clause that reduced the amount of time an animal remains in the pound before it becomes the property of the KHS to three days from five. After three days, the KHS is entitled to put the animal up for adoption or euthanize it. “I don’t agree with that,” said Coun. Bill Robinson. “If the dog disappears on Friday, it might be Monday before you can get there to check if its at the pound.” “I don’t agree with it either,” said Coun. Del Stowe. “It costs $75/day to keep the dog,” said CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr. “You have the day you lost the dog plus three days before they can put it up for adoption or euthanize it.” “They are open seven days a week,” said Coun. John McDougall.

In Our Opinion
Youth and technology sometimes not the best combination
We could do without exaggerations like ‘wildly important goals’ Craig Bakay Reporter
editorial@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Column — You know, it seems like it might be time for another ‘the-sky-is-falling’ reminder of how human beings like to exaggerate for emphasis. You all remember the sky-is-falling story? Henny Penny the chicken is sitting around the barnyard one day when an acorn falls on her head. She incorrectly concludes that the sky is falling and decides she must ‘go and tell the king.’ Along the way to tell the king, she relates her story to Ducky Lucky, Turkey Lurkey and several other barnyard animals most of us can’t remember. Well, of course no king is going to hear a chicken’s complaints anyways but like a lot of people, this contingent believes their cause is the most just one there is and they are determined. However, this unbridled enthusiasm doesn’t work out so well because they allow themselves to be
conned into believing the Big Bad Wolf is actually the king’s representative and the bottom line is that one-by-one, they are all eaten (except in some versions Henny Penny survives adding the element of becareful-who-you-listen-to to the story). At one time or another, we’ve all been seduced by the exaggerationfor-emphasis bug, whether it be a ‘mountain-of-evidence’ or simply ‘I have to have that donut.’ Much of the time, exaggeration doesn’t cost any more than hard feelings but in the case of municipal politics, it can result in the waste of limited resources and funds. Not meaning to single out South Frontenac Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough but his use of the “mission critical description of the need for new communications equipment is one example of where overstating the case might lead to the opposite effect of what was desired. While there is no question that communication in the Frontenacs is an issue, making out that it’s critical is a bit over the top. Granted, in the case of a major disaster (emergency services not being able to communicate with each other was clearly a problem during 9-11 in New York’s
World Trade Centre). But really, what chance is there that something similar could happen in Frontenac County? Yes, we should work towards a better com system for our emergency responders. But there is some reality at work here in that $5- to $7-million given the County’s assessment base isn’t realistic without provincial or federal help. Exaggerating the need isn’t going to change that. But at least Chesebrough’s assessment of the problem is true in that there are a dead zones that need to be addressed, as well as compatibility with neighbouring municipalities and lack of redundancy/backup. In another case of ridiculous overstatement, Frontenac County is looking at a report on its ‘strategic plan’ from an outfit called ‘Performance Concepts Consulting Inc.’ The company name is a bit pretentious but wait until you hear what they came up with in their report. Are you ready for this? “Wildly Important Goals. Seriously, “wildly? And of course, given the current propensity for acronyms, they want us to refer to ‘wildly important goals’ as ‘wigs.’ Kinda blows credibility, doesn’t it?

Heritage Editorial – It is fair to say that our world is technology obsessed. Seeing people texting or surfing the web on their phone or tablet has become a common sight and most of us don’t think twice about it, but should this behavior be acceptable in the classroom? More and more elementary and secondary schools are dealing with issues surrounding technology and the devices that go along with them. In recent years there have been multiple stories about cyber bullying and inappropriate images being circulated around schools via Facebook or Twitter. Even if these interactions occur outside of the classroom, they are being brought into the classroom through technology and inevitably causing issues. A few weeks ago there was an incident even closer to home. Approximately 15 Napanee high school students were questioned by police and then suspended after sharing inappropriate photos. While the photos were not taken on school property, the y were shared on devices while students were at school. Police will not comment on the exact nature of the photos, but the issue certainly raises further concerns about the effects of technology on youth. Technology has always been viewed as a positive in terms of teaching, but is that still the case? Should there be stricter policies about when and how to use technology in elementary and secondary schools? The Limestone District School Board has commented on the recent events and they point out that while these issues are not limited to their board, this is the largest they have seen thus far. The board is working to develop programming for students about internet best practices and online citizenship. These programs were actually launched last year, but are they enough? Does the responsibility in these cases fall on the board or on the parents? Bullying, teasing and inappropriate behavior is not new to school environments, but technology seems to be amplifying their effects. An argument can be made for the banning of smart phones and tablets, but even then, kids will still have access to computers in the classroom and they will still carry their after school activities and actions with them to school. Perhaps it is time for the school boards to institute stronger, more concrete rules regarding technology and focus on tough consequences for those that disobey. One thing is for sure, there needs to be a shift. Technology isn’t going anywhere.

Home and Renovation Show at the CAT Centre
Building a new home or renovating your existing home? There’s no better place to be this weekend, than at the Kingston Home Builders Association 32nd Annual Home and Renovation Show. Held at the Cataraqui Centre, the show features exhibitors showcasing many products & services. While some booths have participated in the show for decades, others are new this year. Shoppers can speak directly to professionals involved in many segments of the home and renovation industry. “It’s amazing that a volunteer organization can run a high quality show like this for 32 years,” noted Jordan Van Leuken, President of the Kingston Home Builders Association. “We have an excellent Show Committee that’s always trying to improve the Show. It’s important that both our participants and our valued patrons have a great experience”, he added. The
Show is a great convenience to patrons, as it offers one stop shopping for product knowledge & quotes. New this year, is the KHBA Home Show Passport. “We’re delighted to have partnered with McCoy Tours to send a lucky couple to New York City” says Van Leuken. The Show area has been divided into five areas representing the five boroughs of New York City. Patrons simply have their Passport validated by one vendor in each of the five boroughs (Bronx, Staten Island, Manhatten, Brooklyn & Queens). Completed Passports are dropped off at the McCoy booth. The draw takes place Sunday at 4pm. Passports are available to adults free of charge (limited to one per adult patron), and are available at all participating vendors. Returning to the Show this year is the “Home-in-One Grand Give Away” putting challenge. “This was a huge-

ly successful family event last year, and our winner was a student at Bayridge Public School. The community support was fabulous, with $1,500 donated to Almost Home”, says Van Leuken. With any freewill donation to Kingston’s Almost Home
( w w w. a l m o s t h o m e . o n . c a < h t t p : / / w w w. a l m o s t h o m e . on.ca> ), each participant gets three chances to sink a golf ball using a putter fashioned out of a hammer. One ballot is earned for every successful putt. The winner of the draw takes home $1,000, courtesy of BMO Financial Group. CRA tax receipts are provided for any donation over $10. Unlike other trade or home renovation shows, this show has no admission charge it’s free. The show runs during mall hours: 9:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday. The Kingston Home Builders Association first met in the basement of a home in 1954 to discuss the possibility of beginning an association. In 2014, the association has become an important asset to the Kingston home building community with close to 200 members. “We

are an association that represents the interests of those in the home building industry, including developers” said Van Leuken. “We work with the City of Kingston and Loyalist Township to ensure that [homebuilding] development is progressing in a positive way.” Members include new home builders, renovatiors, trades, suppliers, and professionals. “We host various events to help our members network, such as dinner meetings with informative guest speakers pertaining to industry needs,” said Van Leuken. “Much has changed in our industry since the new building code came out in 2012. We try to keep our members informed.” If you own a business which serves the home improvement & renovation industry, and would like to know how Membership in the Kingston Home Builders Association can benefit you, call their office 613-547-0986.

Home projects perfect for spring The rejuvenating spirit of spring makes this beloved season an ideal time for homeowners to take stock of their homes and properties and address any issues that arose during the winter. While some homes make it through winter unscathed, the harsh weather of the year’s coldest season can add several tasks to homeowners’ springtime todo lists. While some projects are best left to the professionals, others can be tackled even by those homeowners with little or no DIY experience. The following are a handful of projects tailor-made for spring. Inspect the gutters Gutters tend to bear the brunt of harsh winter weather, and come spring gutters are
in need of inspection if not repair. Winter winds, snow and heavy rainfall can compromise the effectiveness of gutters, which can easily accumulate debris and detach from homes during winter storms. In addition, gutters sometimes develop leaks over the winter months. As a result, homeowners should conduct a careful inspection of their gutters come the spring, being sure to look for leaks while clearing the gutters of debris and reattaching gutters that might have become detached from the home on windy winter days and nights. When reattaching loose gutters, make sure the downspouts are draining away from the foundation, as gutters that are not draining properly can cause damage to that foundation and possibly lead to flooding.

Take stock of roof shingles Much like its gutters and downspouts, a home’s roof can suffer significant damage over the course of a typical winter. Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suffered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, problems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible.
damage, while low spots on the lawn that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up. When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation. Assessing potential property damage is a rite of passage for homeowners in the spring. Though some damage is significant, oftentimes even novice DIYers can work their homes and properties back into shape in time to enjoy spring and summer.
Check for freeze damage Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced. Examine the lawn for low spots Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s foundation increases the risk of potentially costly
Each spring, homeowners should inspect their gutters to ensure the gutters are still attached to their homes and free of debris.

County Council balks at $5-$7 million fire communications system plan By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — Frontenac County Council, while conceding that communications for township fire and emergency crews is inadequate, balked at the price tag of $5 million to $7 million for a new system. Addressing Council at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie, South Frontenac Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough, along with a contingent of the Township fire chiefs and public works managers, suggested that with the City of Kingston and United Counties of Leeds & Grenville recently upgrading their systems, “this will
create challenges with our Mutual Aid partners (and) if we do not act immediately, this will become ‘mission critical.’ Coun. David Jones took exception to the ‘mission critical’ statement. “I’m pretty skeptical that something that was operational 10 years ago is now mission critical, Jones said. “How long has this been festering? “It looks like somebody was asleep at the switch. Coun. Gary Davison, who is also the Mayor of South Frontenac, defended his chief’s position, although he too had reservations about the cost. “I don’t think anybody dropped
the ball here, Davison said. “Other jurisdictions moved ahead and changed the playing field. “(But) the number ($5-$7 million) is overwhelming and I’d like to see this on the agenda for the March 5 committee of the whole meeting. The biggest problem with the current system, Chesebrough said, is that there are five sites (i.e. communications towers), which allow for only one site to be broadcasting at any one given time (also called ‘multicast’). If that site goes down, that’s it for communications, he said. Also, the system contains several ‘dead zones’ due to topography and a few other factors.
Chesebrough’s plan would change the system to ‘simulcast’ by adding towers and upgrading equipment. “(A new system) would allow us to reach the public safety standard of 95 per cent, he said. “Currently, we’re around 50 per cent. He said the upgraded system would also improve response times, give the ability to manage multiple incidents, give the ability to record all channels to minimize liability and be shared with public works as well as the aforementioned compatibility with mutual aid partners. Coun. Janet Gutowski wondered if there had been any consultation with the County’s emergency and
paramedic services, which has its own system and Chesebrough responded that there had not been. Davison asked paramedics chief Paul Charbonneau “could you share and would you? “Our system is already shared across the province and it’s being looked at for replacement, Charbonneau said. “There has been talk of integrating the fire departments into it but because there are 445 fire departments in Ontario, it could be difficult to implement. “And we have a closed system to protect patient confidentiality but that wouldn’t preclude us from having a second system.

Singing the blues will help fight cancer
Blues legend John Lee Hooker, who performed at Dollar Bill’s in Kingston more than 30 years ago, also appears on the new Live From Dollar Bill’s CD set. Several of the musicians on the CDs wil return to Kingston for a May 25 event at Tir na nOg celebrating the famed bar and the musicians who played there. there are so many artists involved, and several are deceased, getting approval to release the CDs could have been a problem.

Organizers decided to produce only 500 CDs and to channel all profits to charity. “Because of that, we were able to get special agreements from the artists or their estates,” said Berofe. “Everyone gave permission. The money raised will go directly to the purchase of equipment for the cancer centre. We’ll be doing something tangible and real.” The highlight will be a Live From Dollar Bill’s gig on May 25 at Tir na nOg, the site of the original Dollar Bill’s. Some of the musicians on the recordings will be returning to perform. Day Aykroyd will serve as host for the evening. Only 300 tickets are available. That’s the legal limit for the setting. Tickets are $160 each with a limit of two per purchase. Each person attending will also get one of the four-CD set of recordings. “That will leave 200 CD sets,” said Berofe. “These will be on sale at the May 25 event for $125 each, so people can get extra sets there.”

If any are left over, they will be available for purchase from the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation. There has been strong reaction to news of the discovery of these tapes. “We’ve had calls from across Canada, England, Mexico, Caribbean islands, Turks and Caicos and probably most of the blues societies in North America wanting to know about the CDs,” said Berofe. “But we’re only making those 500 sets.” The group has even received permission to redecorate Tir na nOg so it will look like Dollar Bill’s. One of the earliest performers at the bar was blues legend John Mayall. “That show was recorded by sound engineer Doug McClement,” said Berofe. “It was during a miserable snow storm and started two hours late.” Continued on page 25

sitting at Lloyd’s kitchen table. Lloyd pulled out some old cassettes. Berofe was in awe when he listened to recordings that had never been heard in public since their first broadcast more than 30 years ago– musicians like John Lee Hooker and Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee. They decided to do something about it. A group was formed to bring these old tapes to life. “We’ve narrowed it down to 61 tracks featuring 15 artists,” said Berofe. “The tapes have all been remastered. I’ve heard them and can guarantee people will be astonished at the quality of the recording and the quality of the performances. You’ll hear John Lee Hooker wailing. If you close your eyes you can see David Wilcox and Colleen Petersen on stage.” There’s an intimate connection between the musicians and cancer. Some of the artists you hear on these CDs died from the disease. That’s why the organizers chose the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario to receive the profits from this project. “We’ve all lost people to cancer,” said Berofe. “But when you think that 15 members of bands playing on the CDs died of cancer themselves, it’s overwhelming.” There was one catch. Daytripper - Imagine sitting around listening to blues masters like John Lee Hooker and John Mayall and wanting to preserve the moment forever. That’s exactly what’s happened for some blues aficionados in Kingston, and in doing so, they’ll be helping in the fight against cancer. Tales of life at a long-closed bar called Dollar Bill’s located inside the Prince George Hotel have reached near-mythological status in town. That can only increase in the near future. I have no firsthand knowledge; Dollar Bill’s was before my time in Kingston. But I’m still excited by the recent news that tapes have been discovered from the late 1970s and early 1980s gigs at the bar. A lot of the tapes come from performances that were broadcast live to a nowdefunct local radio station. Peter Lloyd, the manager of Dollar Bill’s, kept some of the tapes. Others ended up scattered across Canada in the homes of sound engineers who had made the recordings. The tunes were largely lost to memories of the past. Thanks to folks like Peter Lloyd and Stephen Berofe, that music will again see the light of day. Over a year ago, Berofe was
High School athlete of the week
Multisport athlete aims for OFSAA soccer title By Mark Kerr Reporter
Gazette Sports -- Whether he is guarding the net during penalty kicks of the championship game or taking aim at a target the size of a pinhead 10 metres away, Matthew Truelove thrives on pressure. “I am a very competitive person,” said Truelove, 17, a Grade 12 student at RegiopolisNotre Dame Catholic High School. “I enjoy winning and being focused on what I need to do (to win).” Truelove plays soccer and football at Regiopolis-Notre Dame, and he participates in competitive air pistol shooting outside of his school activities. He said he traces his competitive streak back to his childhood and growing up with his older brother James, 18. “We’ve been going at ‘er for a long time,” he said with a laugh. Years of battling his brother couldn’t fully prepare him for the intense pressure he experienced last spring as the keeper of the senior boys’ soccer team. The final game of the Eastern Ontario championship came down to penalty kicks, with his coach and teammates calling on him to make just one stop. And he did just that, robbing the second shooter, but it wasn’t enough as Regiopolis-Notre Dame’s pivotal shot clanged off the goal post. Truelove admits he thought a lot about the first penalty kick that he faced that day. He got a piece of the shot but not enough to stop the ball from trickling over the goal line. “That was a tough couple of weeks (after EOSSAA). I really wanted to go to OFSAA. I did what I was asked to do, but I kept thinking about how I could have done more,” he said. “I finally got over it because I knew there was always next year.” Having the ability to move past a disappointing outcome is something Truelove has focused on improving in his other sporting passion: competitive shooting. When he first started out, Truelove found he would get into a downward spiral after a few bad shots.
He said he has worked hard to address that shortcoming. “It takes a lot of mental training,” he said. “When I have a bad shot, I sit down and have a break. I try to take it one shot at a time and hope for the best.” Truelove, who has represented Ontario at several national competitions, is slated to compete in the 2014 Ontario Winter Games that begin today in the Muskokas. The local athlete is looking to compete at the national championship this year and possibly make it on to the World Cup circuit. Competitive shooting has connected Truelove to his future career pursuit. His coach suggested he join the Canadian Forces reserves in order to practice his shooting with the military training team. A long-time cadet, Truelove was interested in the reserves and joined the 21st Electronic Warfare Regiment. He has already put in a request to join the regular Canadian Forces following high school. “I have always wanted to do something meaningful for my country,” he said. Truelove devotes every Thursday night and every other weekend to the reserves. Currently, he is taking a military vehicle driving course that he really likes. He doesn’t find it difficult to balance his schedule right now as he only has shooting, reserves and school work. He expects the challenge to increase near the end of March when soccer training camp opens. The keeper is eager to get back on the field and erase once and for all last year’s disappointing ending. And while he wants nothing more than to earn a medal at the OFSAA soccer championship, Truelove thinks he can keep everything in perspective, a vital Matthew Truelove in action as the Regi goalkeeper. skill to have when facing immense pressure. “Sports have taught me how to get over things,” he said. “It’s just a game, and you just need to keep going because life goes on.” This profile is the first in the Heritage/ Gazette’s new High School Athlete of the Week column. New CAO for Frontenac Islands By Margaret Knott Correspondent
Gazette News- 1. Mayor Denis Doyle formally introduced Frontenac Islands newly hired Chief Administrative Officer/Clerk/ Treasurer (CAO), Darlene Plumley, at a special budget meeting of council on Howe Island. Plumley, formerly the CAO at Stone Hills Township located in Lennox and Addington County, assumes her new position effective March 3, 2014. “She brings with her 20 years experience in the municipal field and the skills necessary to meet the challenges faced by our Township in the coming years, Mayor Doyle said following the meeting. Plumley attended the meeting to meet council members and staff and to get a sense of Frontenac Islands, the issues the township deals with, and its financial situation. Mayor Doyle invites Frontenac Islands ratepayers “to give CAO Plumley a warm welcome as she begins her new career of service with the Township of Frontenac Islands 2. You have heard it before but it bears repeating - Mayor Doyle offered his comments on what has been a very challenging winter with
ferry services seriously impacted by the weather. “The Simcoe Ferry closed completely, the Howe Foot Ferry experienced trouble, but kept going most of the time thanks to a dedicated crew, volunteers, and MTO who provided an excavator to keep the dock on the Gananoque side clear of ice. Even the Wolfe Islander was not able to maintain its schedule on the coldest days, but kept going, and to ensure the track doesn’t freeze over during the 2:00 am to 5:45 am shutdown the crew keeps the vessel moving back and forth. We were not so fortunate with the County Howe Island ferry, he said. “There the track filled with ice that got pushed into the slips as the vessel approached the dock making it impossible to get close enough to lower the ramps. According to Doyle, MTO brought in large excavators, scooped out the ice in the slips and across the Howe channel, over several days during which time NO vehicles including ambulances and fuel trucks could be transported. “This became a serious concern. However the Howe Island Fire Fighters marked a safe path across the ice at the east end of the island working with the Paramedic Service to meet at a designated place on
the mainland so in the event of a medical emergency a person could be transported across by snowmobile and sled. Had the crisis continued an emergency would have been declared to establish a means of getting fuel oil to Howe Island . Following meetings with MTO, and County staff tentative plans to prevent such a crisis from happening again were worked out for the Howe Island ferry. They determined that the bubbler system, installed in the 70’s has deteriorated and is ineffective, was the main cause of Howe Island’s problems, further aggravated when the island’s 9 car ferry was replaced with a wider 15 car ferry in 2004 and the track cleared by the bubbler system was no longer wide enough. As well the ferry’s cable drive system on one side only, does not track in a straight line across the water causing ice to break off. “MTO will come up with a design for a wider path, free of ice, for installation this spring or summer, according to the Mayor “so that we do not experience this same crisis again. It was counterproductive to spend energy on pointing fingers so we worked hard instead to ensure the root cause of issues are fixed
as quickly as possible. He noted however, that during the crisis rumours were spread that ferry operators allowed the County Ferry to sit at the dock, freezing to the slip while they took long breaks. Following a full review by Frontenac County Ferry Operations, the township has been assured that it was not true and that the Frontenac Howe ferry makes a crossing every half hour during the night whether cars are waiting or not. “We owe thanks to Township, MTO and County staff for their hard work and dedication to making the best out of a bad situation, Mayor Doyle concluded. Islanders now wait to hear the outcome of Mayor Doyle’s meeting with Minister of Transportation Glenn Murray regarding ferry services. 3. The Frontenac County budget recently approved increases Frontenac Islands levy slightly by $10,593, or 1.3% over last year’s levy of $801,684. All of the 2014 Federal gas tax will be distributed to the townships. ( Nearly $80,000 to Frontenac Islands) In previous years (most of) this money was retained at the County for Sustainability projects. 4. NB- The 2014 Frontenac Islands budget deliberations will
continue over the next few weeks. Watch for dates. Around Town:* WI’s Fire Chief Tim Hawkins extends thanks for the contributions made on behalf of WI’s Fire Service that made it possible to pave the driveways and property around the Emergency Services Buildings and our Fire Hall. Special thanks to the Wolfe Island Ambulance Volunteers of Old who contributed the largest share, Frontenac County Paramedic Services, Cruickshank Construction Ltd. Steve‌and many others. Once again- Thank You. * Congratulations to Marysville Public School named among the winners in the 4th annual “Recycle My Cell Student Challenge, Canada’s national recycling program inviting them to collect as many old wireless devices as possible, cell phones, smart phones, batteries. etc. More than 140 Canadian schools participated. Marysville was the Ontario winner. ($500.) Congratulations. How exciting is that! * Does anyone remember the girl who won the Best Sailor trophy at the WI Boat Club’s first regatta? Violet Stafford (granddaughter) has made it to the Canadian Sailing Team. We are so proud of her efforts. * For events visit wolfeisland.com

Releasing butterflies for bereavement By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Events – Butterflies are a symbol of hope and rebirth. In recent years, the trend of releasing butterflies has become popular at weddings and special events and this year the Bereaved Families of Ontario (BFO) want to use butterflies as a symbol of remembrance. The group is planning a butterfly release at the end of May as a unique way to remember loved ones and celebrate life. “The butterfly event is actually the first of its kind in Southeastern Ontario and it is being done collaboratively between BFO and Hospice Kingston,” explained BFO Kingston’s Strategic Marketing Officer, Matt Williams. “It has been a joint effort and it’s not so much a fundraiser as it is a cel-
ebration. They chose the butterfly because of its symbolic meaning in terms of metamorphosis and being born again after death or sudden change.” Wiliams joined BFO after losing his brother last June to a rare disease known as Batten disease. He originally joined to help out with their teen programming, but became involved with more and more activities. Williams is now working on developing a children’s program and really believes that bereavement programs are extremely helpful to those struggling with loss. “I think the problem with grief and bereavement is that it is such a common thing in life and most people just ignore it and are told to just suck it up and deal with it, but it really can cause serious issues and it can be really hard,” explained Williams. “It is especially hard and
even traumatic for younger people and finding support groups and other people who are dealing with similar issues can be comforting and really helps the healing process.” BFO offers a wide variety of support groups to the community including groups for mothers who have lost children, general grief support groups, mourning coffee groups and many more. Even if people don’t feel comfortable coming out to the groups, BFO offers one-on-one counseling and support as well. BFO also holds an annual Walk to Remember and while the butterfly release is separate from the walk, Williams hopes that it can become a fun annual event too. “We really wanted to do an event with Hospice Kingston this year and make it an annual event too. We are planning kind of a jam-packed fun
Saturday afternoon with face painters, henna tattoos and of course the butterfly release.” The butterflies can be purchased for $25 on both the BFO website and the Hospice Kingston website and are being ordered from a butterfly farm in the Niagara region. They do need to be ordered at least eight weeks in advance and even if people can’t attend the actual release event, they can still purchase a butterfly. “If people are unable to attend but still want to release a butterfly, we can arrange for a volunteer to release one for them,” added Williams. He said he is excited about the nearly 100 orders that have already been placed, but he’d like to see more. “I’d like to see us get up to 400 or 500 butterflies and really make this an amazing event.” Regardless, the event is sure to

Up in my grill
A guide to culinAry hAppenings And seAsonAl food
Kate Kristiansen
I Coat Checked a Tiramisu Columnist
Up in My Grill - Two decades ago, I stumbled upon Marche restaurant, located at 181 Bay Street, Toronto, inside Brookfield Place. It opened my eyes to a fresh way of exploring food. It impacted my taste for variety and with it, endowed me with a zest of adventure in eating. Since opening in 1992, the contemporary Swiss market continues to be my oasis. Not always for the food (although often it‘s very tasty) but for the memories it holds. Fresh, healthy and fast is their
vations, but typically it‘s open Monday – Thursday 7:30 a.m. – 11 p.m. and Friday through Sunday 7:30 a.m. – 1 a.m. every day, all year round. Getting there is easy as the subway station is nearby. If you are driving, park at Brookfield garage, located right next door to Marche between Yonge and Bay Streets on Wellington. Marche will validate your parking if your bill is $30 dollars or more. It’s then free and you can leave your vehicle for the rest of the day while shopping around downtown. Upon arrival, you are greeted and provided with a plastic card (somewhat like a credit card) to shop for

guarantee. To me, it’s the holy grail of food frenzy-dom. The lively market atmosphere seats up to 600 guests. They do not accept reservations, unless you are a large booking. Sometimes, I’ve waited in line on a busy Saturday night. It was always worth it and never felt overcrowded. The Marche Movenpick website claims it’s the largest Marche restaurant in the world. A landmark Toronto establishment, partly due to its size and location next to the Hockey Hall of Fame, it’s a haunt for both locals and tourists. It has changed ownership throughout the years and sometimes closed its doors for reno-

your meal. The quirky, open concept restaurant is set up in tiny market cooking areas for you to choose from. Select a table in one of the many themed rooms. Each table has a sign for you to flip over to reserve your place and you are then free to discover. At the end of the night, present your little card and the person at the register will total up the cost of your meal and add a 12 per cent gratuity. The food is cooked fresh in front of you, and a wide range of menu options are available including woodfire pizzas, pasta, seafood, steak, chicken, stuffed sandwiches, Thai soups, sushi, green salad and a host of other selections. Enjoy a wine or beer from the bar, which offers ample choices by the glass or bottle. Soft jazz or flamenco guitars can be heard in the background, softening the tone of the buzzing atmosphere of guests meandering about. Save room for dessert. You will not be able to walk by the dessert bar, with its huge range of fresh baked goods and tasty choices from the ice cream market. The sweet smell of vanilla and sugar mixed with chocolate is a delight. My first taste of Tiramisu was here, and so began my long love affair with the dessert. Not to mention the coffee bar featuring espresso, filtered coffee, tea and hot chocolate with truffles to finish off the evening. I have spent loads of time strolling the Marche markets. It’s my “go to” place. In fact, I recall a scramble one evening when my girlfriend and I double booked for two dates and the second was a late night wine and dessert at Marche. (Still makes me giggle.) I even brought my parents here to meet my future in-laws for the first time. Since then, I’ve brought my husband, my daughter and countless others to enjoy its offerings. Although, one night will go down in history as the best ever at Marche. It was the early ‘90s. I was living in Toronto and had a friend visiting. Marche had long become one of my and my roommate’s favourite destinations. We were long overdue to catch up and planned for a late night of talking, eating and dancing. On the way out, my roommate demanded that we bring her back a tiramisu dessert. Of course, I promised with
a smile. My friend had never been to Marche and, despite how often I frequented the restaurant, there still were many things I had not yet tried. We decided that night we would sample (almost) every type of food on offer. Dipping sushi into the green wasabi and noshing on pasta, salads, and meat, the courses seemed endless. We also drank with each selection, tasting wines and learning about their grape varieties. The explosion of flavors in my mouth was matched by laughter, and made for a good night. It’s probably the first time I truly appreciated the experience of eating. Instead of the old staples we permitted ourselves to explore and understand the importance of a discerning palate. Feeling tipsy and incredibly full, we could not depart without paying a rather large cheque and purchasing a takeaway Tiramisu. Tiramisu is a tantalizing dessert of cake infused with a liquid such as coffee or rum, layered with a rich cheese filling and topped with grated chocolate. No two are alike. It has been a favorite since my first bite. The night was not over. We still needed to stop for dancing. Late dinner followed by dancing was always warranted. However, what to do with the tiramisu? Interestingly enough, Tiramisu is an Italian dessert and in English means “pick me up”. It may have proven helpful for us single gals to cart the Tiramisu onto the dance floor and wave it about, but this was not practical, so I did what seemed logical (after many glasses of wine). I coat checked the Tiramisu! We had a number provided to us to recover it at the end of the night. But, can you really trust a coat jockey with chocolate rum filled dessert? We didn’t think so, so we took a photo to be sure we knew where to find him should the tiramisu go missing. Marche holds many delicious memories. My palate has grown over the years, but I still frequent with family and friends. One thing is for certain, I never ever leave without the Tiramisu! If you have a foodie biz or restaurant location I should try email me at ladydinesalot@gmail.com or follow my blog LadyDinesalot.com.

We even had Jim Cuddy in his early days in a band called the Hi Fi’s.” After all the tapes were located, they were sent to Doug McClement in Toronto. He’d done some of the original recordings in Kingston. He also helped find some of the tapes that had become scattered across Canada. Lacquer Channel Mastering in Toronto did the remastering of original tapes. “Doug literally spent months transferring the material to CDs,” said Berofe. “And we spent 11 months listening to everything and choosing tracks, getting permission from artists, and even figuring out what the names of some songs were.”

In addition to blues greats like John Mayall, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee and John Lee Hooker, there are other blues, rock and folk musicians in the collection. Guitar great Amos Garrett is there. Jimmy Page, in a Rolling Stone magazine article, said Garrett is one of his favorite American guitar players. You’ll also hear a number of Canadian-born musicians: David Wilcox, who has performed with icons like Charlie Pride and Carl Perkins; Colleen Petersen, a folk and country performer, who recorded and toured with Charlie Daniels, Tom Waits and Ry Cooder; Poet/songwriter/musician Willie P. Bennett; Rough Trade, possibly one of Canada’s best bands ever. Definitely the kinkiest. Some of the musicians returning for the May 25 gig include the Lincolns and David Wilcox. Berofe says there will be big surprises when some international artists confirm their participation. Tickets for the event are available through the Grand Theatre box office or by calling 613-530-2050. Mark Bergin on Twitter @ markaidanbergin.

Enchanté
Enchanting and fascinating people….and their world
Mark Bergin
Kate Miller-Heidke: quirky and brilliantly talented Enchanté - These days, when popular musical artists are vying for “Who gets the most outrageous headline this week,” an Australian singer/songwriter is one of the more understated talents. Despite low-key marketing, Kate Miller-Heidke is one of the most creative and innovative musicians on the scene. And she’s definitely one of the most talented. Some musicians, because of their personalities and skill, deserve to be superstars. Kate Miller-Heidke is one of them. But she’s turned her back on the corporate world that could take her to stratospheric success. Her work, bordering on performance art, takes music to new artistic levels, far outside the monotony of commercial radio’s mainstream. Her songwriting skills could easily produce an ongoing slew of catchy number-one hits. Instead, she chooses social commentary and relevance over selling out. She’s devoted herself to many important issues. Her current cause is the Great Barrier Reef. Miller-Heidke is just as unpredictable visually as she is musically. She often presents with a down-home simplicity, almost like a blonde Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, but the sparkle in her eyes lets you know there’s hidden madness and silliness under the facade. One moment she looks like she could be set to attend a southern fundamentalist church service; the next, she’s Nina Hagen-ish bizarre, like a diva out of a nineteenth century opera. Her Facebook Song became a viral Internet hit and live concert fan favorite as she mocked the superficiality of many of those who use the social media giant. Throughout the song her pop voice segues to opera. You can sense her mind giggling behind the lyrics. It all sounds squeaky-clean and typically pop, until, of course, the lines:
“I don’t give a toss if you’re a ninja or a pirate. I suspect you’d be a pirate, But I don’t want to verify it. And I don’t give a s***what your stripper name is, Or if your kitty had a litter. Look, just follow me on Twitter. I don’t care about your family tree, (Cue falsetto vocals here) And I certainly don’t want you poking me. Again. So now you want to be my friend on Facebook. Are you f***ing kidding me. Click, Ignore.” The song would obviously never hit Top of the Pops, but it’s indicative of the humor evident even in MillerHeidke’s early writing. You can search Kate Miller-Heidke on YouTube to explore the many talents and styles of this musician. To get a sense of her pop songwriting skills, check out songs like Can’t Shake It. If you start thinking she’s just another pop queen, flip back to the darker side and listen to her operatic version of the Talking Heads’ Psycho Killer. She even manages to add a touch of humor to that dark cult classic. After high school, she achieved degrees in music from Australia’s Queensland Conservatorium of Music and Queensland University of Technology. The recipient of numerous awards for her classical singing, she became an Opera Queensland Developing Artist, performing in such productions as Sweeney Todd and Don Pasquale. After completing her training as a lead opera soprano, she maintained a dual professional life, also performing in Australian pop bands. In 2006, after taking part in the Broad Festival project with other Australian female musicians, she was expected to return to Opera Australia for a series of Gilbert and Sullivan shows.
But one of her pop songs, Space They Cannot Touch, took off on the Australia pop charts. She suddenly had hordes of fans and a Sony recording contract along with appearances on Australian national television. In 2008, she and her husband, Keir Nuttall, who plays guitar in MillerHeidke’s band, won $25,000 USD in the International Songwriting Competition for their song Caught in the Crowd. No Australian had ever won the prize. Many thought her opera days were over. But in 2009, she again appeared at the Sydney Opera House and, again, people took note. She was invited to audition for the English National Opera and landed a role in The Death of Klinghoffer at the London Coliseum. She performed in Michel van der Aa’s Sunken Garden opera with the English National Opera last year. Late in 2013, she announced that she’d left Sony Records, calling it a corporate juggernaut. Instead of sussing out a contract with another company she went for crowd funding through PledgeMusic. In three days, she reached the funding target required for her next album. Miller-Heidke and her band have toured extensively in North America, Europe and Australia and have amassed a devoted fan base. But she remains far outside the mainstream. Highly educated and intelligent, yet with pop appeal and avant garde Australian independent recording artist Kate Miller-Heidke has a leanings, she’s not about to be worldwide following. Cold air: giving a boost to power and mileage? Brian Turner
Car Counsellor bjoeturner@hotmail.com
Gazette Lifestyle - Almost every driver today is looking for some way to improve fuel mileage and a great many of them are looking to coldair intake systems, especially those driving V8 powered trucks. The only problem is most consumers that install a cold-air system find their fuel mileage actually worsens instead of improving. A cold air intake is made up of duct-work and brackets and an air filter which differs considerably from the original automaker’s set-up. The tube that carries the air to the throttle body is usually shorter and larger in diameter. The air filter mounting bracket is often located to areas of the engine bay as far away from heat sources as possible. The air filters on these kits are designed to move more air at a faster rate. This allows greater volumes of cooler and denser air to get into the engine’s intake. When a gasoline engine can ingest cooler and denser air, it burns the fuel more completely. Carmakers use traditional systems instead of cold-air intakes primarily to reduce noise. Cold-air systems with their open air filters are somewhat noisier than OEM systems. So in theory a more efficient fuel burn should mean better fuel mileage, right? Well, it’s not quite
that simple. As well as boosting engine efficiency, cold-air intakes help to boost horsepower. The increase usually isn’t much, but it is noticeable (usually less than five per cent). But when this modest jump in power is combined with the turbinetype noise of the open air filter, they usually create a communication line from the driver’s ear to his or her right foot with instructions to ‘open-er-up’ and let those ponies loose and this is where fuel-mileage usually takes a quiet place in the back seat. If drivers installing these systems would only take some time to relearn their driving style, they might see some improved mileage. Good quality cold-air intakes seldom void any carmaker warranty, and are a relatively easy DIY project. Kits range in price from $200-$350 depending on application and those that use cleanable reusable air filters can provide additional savings by reducing the need to purchase new air filters. In a move to capture more auto service repair and maintenance business, Ford announced recently a major upgrade in their parts and accessories warranties. Now these items will be warranted for 24 months from time of purchase or installation (including parts and labour) with most repairs completed at any Ford or Ford Lincoln dealership, and up to $150 labour coverage for fleets and installers completing repairs. This labour coverage for parts installed at other-than-Ford dealer service
departments is an industry first. New and reman gas engines and transmission assemblies from Ford will see their warranty increase to 36 months with unlimited mileage and Ford will provide vehicle owners with towing reimbursement for repairs completed at any Ford or Ford Lincoln dealership. In a news item that has left more than a few scratching their heads, Reuters reported last week that Volkswagen’s top labour representative threatened
to block further investments by the German carmaker in the southern US if its workers there are not unionized. Workers at VW’s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, recently voted against representation by the United Auto Workers union (UAW) by a narrow margin, rejecting efforts by VW representatives to set up a German-style works council at the plant. Mother’s lessons on life proved valuable for Mary
SENS TICKETS ON SALE NOW
And Mother said that when you did a good deed, if you told anyone about it, it erased the deed. I had a hard time grasping what she meant, since I knew I had done the deed, so how could it be erased? But Mother went on in great detail, telling me good deeds were no longer good deeds if you bragged about them. I still wasn’t convinced, but as always, Mother’s word was the law. And so I kept to myself my giving the ribbons to my young classmate at the Northcote School. When she next came to school, several days later, so I knew she was needed at home, her long black hair was tied high on her head, and there was one of the long ribbons from the brown paper bag I had given her. She gave me the biggest smile, and neither of us said a word. No one knew but the two of us how she came to have brightly coloured ribbons tying up her long dark hair. A warm feeling came over me, and I knew then what Mother meant when she said a good deed is erased if you brag about it. Another lesson learned, and this one that has stayed with me since that day Mother sat me down in the kitchen so many years ago. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Gazette Lifestyle - Sometimes I got tired listening to what Mother called her lessons on life. Just about everything I did provided me with a lesson on life according to Mother. And I had to admit most of them rolled off me like rain off a duck’s back. But she persevered, oh, how she persevered! We learned early about honesty. According to Mother, honesty was right up there with going to church every Sunday. And modesty was another thing she preached about. It took my sister Audrey to explain to me that the modesty Mother was preaching about had nothing to do with running around the house in our flourbag underwear, or taking our Saturday night bath in front of everyone in the kitchen, but had everything to do with bragging about ourselves. And certainly envy, could lead us straight to Hell in a basket! And then came the day when I learned about still another lesson on life. It had to do with a young girl who went to the Northcote School. Rather, she went to the Northcote school when she could. It wasn’t unusual for her to miss several days in a row, and we all knew it had nothing to do with catching the measles or the whooping cough. It had everything to do with if she was needed at home. Even though she was only a few years older than I was, she was the oldest girl of a large family. And the chore of helping her mother often fell on her shoulders. We were poor like most other families around us...deep in the Depression, but my sister Audrey said her family was even poorer than we were. Her father worked in the bush miles from their farm, and was often away for weeks at a time. That left her mother to tend the farm, leaving little time to look after the younger children. And so my little classmate, more often than not, NEW had to stay at home to lend a hand. ! There was always a sadness about this young girl. You could see it in her face. She had long dark hair, and often she would tell me how she wished she had coloured ribbons like I had to tie it off her face. And I knew without a doubt, there simply wasn’t enough extra money for hair ribbons to replace the elastic she used to tie her hair up in a knot on the top of her head. My hair ribbons were bought at Walker’s Store in Renfrew only if Mother had a few extra pennies from selling her wares door to door. But at least I had hair ribbons! And so I decided I would take two or three of my best ribbons, put them in a little paper bag, and hand them to the young girl at school. It was on one of the rare days she was at school, and I told her not to open the bag until she got home. “No peeking,” I said. When I got home, I told Mother what I had done, and said I felt so good about .COM it I was going to phone my best friend Velma and tell her about my good deed. Well, Mother told me to sit down, and I knew without a doubt, another lesson Visit our website, click the calendar on life was coming. She had that look and start posting events FREE! about her.

Hardest winter in two decades or the most fun? Locals embrace the season with a grown-up snow fort Hollie Pratt-Campbell Reporter
@hollieprattcamp
Gazette News - Most of us are in the habit of complaining about this seemingly never-ending winter, but on Family Day weekend Jen Tam, Mark Button and Summer Li decided to embrace the season and make the most of the freezing cold temperatures and endless inches of snow. Their first thought was to build an igloo, but that proved to be a little complicated. “For an igloo you need really good packing snow,” Tam said. “We went outside [on the Sunday] and it was minus eight, so it was really hard to pack it into the moulds.” Instead, they opted for a “quinzhee”, an igloo-like structure made from a pile of settled snow as opposed to blocks of hard snow. They decided to build it out on the frozen Lake Ontario, in the little bay between RMC and Fort Henry; the setting offered ample clean, previously untouched snow and enough isolation to render attacks from young hooligans unlikely. “Quinzhees are [traditionally used] as survival shelters, so you can quickly make something if you get caught out in a storm,” Button explained. “It’s faster than an igloo. Less technical, less skill [required], less work, less pretty.” To make sure they constructed the structure correctly and to ensure it would be as safe as possible, the three did some research online before starting to build the quinzhee. The project took them over 10 hours in total. “To make sure it won’t collapse as you’re building, you block the light in the entrance and check that you
can’t see too much light through the walls,” Button said. “It’s a sign that the wall is getting kind of thin when you can see light coming through, so we stop hollowing out the inside when we see the light.” For optimal thickness, a blue glow should appear around the walls when the entrance is covered. And that wasn’t the only glow Tam, Button and Li discovered when they covered the entrance of the quinzhee, allowing darkness to fill the interior. An enchanting green light also shone up from the icy bottom of structure, revealing a rather mysterious side of Lake Ontario. “It’s a mystery,” Button admitted. “We don’t know why the light’s coming up from the lake – whether it’s sunlight somehow or whether it’s phosphor luminescence - we’re not sure.” Yet he noted that the green glow wasn’t an entire surprise. “We googled online and some of the guys had done the same thing on a lake and they mentioned it in their blog,” Button explained, saying that this was indeed another motivation for building the quinzhee on the frozen lake. Button said that he and Li were planning to camp overnight in the structure – making for a very short commute to their RMC office the next day. “The idea is to sleep in it and go straight to work,” he laughed. So how did it feel to finish such a unique project? “We’re pretty proud,” Tam said. “This year we have a lot of snow whereas last year we didn’t have as much, so getting out for winter activities is always nice and fun.” “I think everyone has the urge to do something like this,” Button added. “It starts when you’re a kid and it never really leaves you, but you sort of give up on doing stuff like that. We work sitting inside all day, and it’s just so nice to get outside and do something, especially Summer Campbell, 2, explores the quinzhee. when the weather’s nice and the sky is blue.”

HOROSCOPES
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 – Aries, you want more than you can acquire this week and your desires may lead you astray. It is important to exercise self-restraint, even if you get a thrill from living on the edge. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 – Taurus, make a concerted effort to improve your focus in the weeks ahead. There is much to lose if you cannot tackle the tasks at hand, particularly at the workplace. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 – Gemini, it’s unlike you to slow down, so don’t be surprised when friends start looking at you curiously after you take your foot off the gas. Your free spirited nature will soon return. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 – Cancer, find a routine that works for you and then stick with it. There is no need to reinvent the wheel, and when actions become automatic, you can focus on other things. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 – A need for attention could get the better of you, Leo. A little humility goes a long way and can alter others’ perceptions of you. You may end up being seen in a more positive light. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 – Virgo, you can differentiate between right and wrong, but your judgement might be off this week. Rely on your intuition, but don’t make any big decisions without first thinking carefully. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 – Libra, it may seem like you are being led astray by one thing after another, when all you want is to focus on one task at a time. Find a way to block out any and all distractions. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 – Scorpio, work on a creative project with a sweetheart or friend early in the week. Ideas will flow easily and your imaginations will soar together. It is a productive pairing. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 – This is not your week to mix love and money, Sagittarius. In fact, keep the two as separate as possible, and exercise caution before lending anyone money. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 – Capricorn, you want to play outside of the rules this week. You normally like to follow a relatively traditional course, so this catches others off guard. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 – You don’t always have the patience to stick with the same routine, Aquarius. That means others cannot expect you to conform to their whims if they want you as a friend. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 – Pisces, you may need to sacrifice some security for a chance to have a memorable experience. Do something out of the ordinary.

Fourty-two years of adding colour and sparkle to the Limestone City Reporter
@hollieprattcamp
Gazette News - Lynda MacRae, owner of The Glass House, hopes that her business will offer a welcome burst of colour to patrons during this very gray time of year. “The colour is what I truly love,” she says. “We’re lucky because with running the shop and having to purchase glass, you get to go and see from our suppliers what’s available. It’s kind of like walking into a giant candy store and you get to pick whatever you want. That’s a lot of fun.” MacRae’s goal is to stock the best glass there is for her customers, in order to keep them inspired while they’re working on projects. “You want people to have a nice selection to work with as well because a lot of people do this as a hobby – it’s amazing how many people do.” In addition to selling glass and other materials for those who create stained glass works as a hobby, The Glass House offers classes for those interested in learning the craft; they also do a lot of commissioned work for local clients, which appears in everything from churches to personal homes. MacRae and employees Yolanda and Merianne build the pieces, which are sketched and designed by Lynda’s husband, Craig MacRae. The MacRaes are the second owners of The Glass House, which was started in 1972 by Sheila Marsh. Originally, the studio was located on lower Princess Street behind Wayfarer Books; now, it can be found at 991 Sydenham Rd. Lynda and Craig took over in 1999. “It’s really evolved over the last 42 years but it’s still [very relevant],” MacRae says. “People say to me, ‘Is this still popular?’, ‘Do people still do this?’, and the answer is certainly yes. I think when people think of stained glass traditionally they think of church windows and they think of installations on people’s doors and things that they see in houses. But it’s a lot more than that.”

These days, stained glass can include everything from mosaics to fused glass pieces to combinations of the two and more – whatever inspires the artist at the time. “A lot of people take their own creativity and combine different techniques to create their own unique pieces. So it’s changed a lot over the years and it seems to keep people interested. Hopefully that’s one of the reasons why we’re still here after all these years.” So what makes a stained glass piece stand out? “I guess like anything it starts with a good design,” MacRae says. “That’s obviously important. Colour is a really big thing too. “Even with a nice pattern, I think if you don’t pick the right glass and the right colours then that can really make or break a piece. Usually people who are familiar with the construction of stained glass will get down to the nitty gritty and look at the quality of the cutting and how close the pieces are and how even the soldering lines are. But I think for the most part what strikes people the most is colour.” At the same time, she notes that patterned textured pieces made of mostly clear glass can also be extremely effective. “People also seem to notice them, and yet they have very little colour. They just have a little bit if Lynda MacRae (Right) and Yolanda work on a commissioned stained glass piece. iridescence in them. I think the fact that they’re almost sparkly because of the textures of the clear glass catches people’s eyes.” Feeling inspired yet? For those looking to take up stained glass as a hobby or build on their existing skill set, a full listing of classes offered at The Glass House can be found at www. theglasshouse.ca. A new lineup of spring courses will be announced in mid-March.

The Monuments Men a monumental piece of work Mark Haskins
My Take
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca Gazette Arts – I think a good movie should tell a story, make you think, and teach you something of the human condition. I think the art in film making is in its ability to move you. It’s in its ability to make you laugh or make you cry. The Monuments Men is a very good film. Towards the end of World War II the Nazis began to move all the art they’d stolen back to Germany. Frank Stokes (George Clooney) is tasked by F.D.R. to put together a team to find the stolen pieces, and get them back to their rightful owners. Some people would see this as foolhardy. For Stokes this is what this war is about. To him it’s about saving 1,000 years of western culture. Stokes calls on James Granger (Matt Damon), Richard Campbell (Bill Murray), Preston Savitz (Bob Balaban), Donald Jefferies (Hugh Bonneville), Jean Claude Clermont (Jean Dujardin) and Walter Garfield (John Goodman) to join him on his quest. They aren’t soldiers, they’re architects, museum curators and artists, but they’re willing to put their lives on the line to save what they can. Their quest soon becomes a race against time. An order is intercepted that says if Germany falls or Hitler is killed then the Nazis are to destroy everything. Every painting, every sculpture, every great work of art lost forever. For Stokes and his men this cannot be allowed to happen. The Monuments Men is a fascinating story. It’s a facet of World War II that I wasn’t that familiar with, and I found Clooney’s telling of this story riveting. To think
of what was almost lost is staggering, yet there were these men and woman putting their lives in danger to save these works of art. It’s incredible, and I thought Clooney was able to take their quest and show why it was important to them, and why it was important to all of us. Beyond that Clooney shows incredible sensitivity with this film. He balances the seriousness of the subject with moments of humour. He balances the horror and sorrow of war with moments of triumph. He quite smartly sticks to his story and the small part it has within the larger picture, and in so doing creates a magnificent film. There’s a sense of real camaraderie between this cast, and it spills forth onto the screen. John Goodman, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, and Hugh Bonneville were perfect. Cate Blanchett who plays Claire Simon a French art expert is wonderful. Matt Damon delivers a great performance, and George Clooney is as brilliant in front of the camera as he is behind it. Art is the soul of a culture or people. Destroy a people’s art and you destroy their soul. The Monuments Men understood that, and I believe George Clooney understands it too. My Take is a regular feature in the St. Lawrence News EMC.

Exploring the complexity and hilarity of human relationships through song in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change Hollie Pratt-Campbell Reporter
@hollieprattcamp
Gazette Entertainment - Meredith Slack isn’t just directing and playing a role in the King’s Town Player’s latest production I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change – she’s directing and playing a total of 20 different characters. “It’s a vignette show, so we never play the same character for more than five minutes, which is really fun as an actor,” she explains. “There are only four of us, so it’s all very intimate.” Slack notes that just as she is doing double duty as actor and director, so too are the other three performers, Amanda Edwards, John Halligan and Daniel Pauley, contributing to
the overall vision of the production. “It just requires more of a collaborative effort from everyone, which I actually really like. I’m not so egotistical as to not think that they might understand something I don’t and so on and so forth. Part of the audition process, actually, was letting those that would be in the cast know that I’m in the show, so I’m going to be calling on them to be eyes on the show as well.” I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is the first musical the King’s Town Players have staged since the company’s inception in 2010. Its subject is romantic relationships in all their many forms. “[It touches on] everything from being single, and all the things that come from being single, to going through dating and marriage and kids and divorce and loss all encapsulated in these two-three minute vignettes, which is really fun,” Slack says. A small live band comprised of a
keyboardist and a violinist will be on stage along with the actors; the show will be performed at the Kingston Yacht Club – the same non-traditional setting that the Players have used for a number of shows in the past. “It’s a really stripped-down musical, which is great,” Slack says. “It’s also a challenge because there’s nowhere to hide whatsoever, so I’m really happy that we’ve got such amazingly talented people involved because it requires that. “There are literally about five seconds between each scene so it really asks a lot of the actor to really get into character without big costumes and without the furniture and the set pieces. Everything has to be really general so it can transform into any given thing.” Getting all of the characters down is also a challenge with such short breaks between scenes, but Slack notes that it was important to her that the actors take the time to learn
each one with care. ‘I think it’s easy to have shows like this where you just [portray] caricatures of each person and I really wanted more than that. I wanted people to see that they are realistic characters going through real life issues and love and loss and all of that in between. So I didn’t want anything to play as campy…I wanted to find some truth in it.” She explains that there’s no real separation between the cast and the audience at the Yacht Club, which serves this production well; indeed, Slack adds that even those who don’t always enjoy traditional musical theatre are sure to have a good time at the show. “Everyone can come with their friends, sit down and have a drink…This show hasn’t been done in Kingston for about 10 years and it is something that people will really love. It’s a great opportunity to have fun and get out for the night. Bring your spouse, bring your friends and just laugh and enjoy yourself.”
