Piccadilly on the chopping block as Council looks to recover costs for halls By Craig Bakay Reporter

No pinning down wrestler’s energetic personality Pg.25

Gazette News — Barring any 11thhour Hail Marys, Piccadilly Hall will be closed and/or sold, Central Frontenac Council decided at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Council voted to accept the report from the committee struck last March to examine the Township Halls structure, which also included an across-theboard fee hike and a call for a review of the lease arrangements for Crow Lake Schoolhouse and Henderson Hall. The closure of Pic Hall will still have to go through the bylaw stage, and CAO/ Clerk Larry Donaldson said there would be a public notice as to which meeting

the bylaw would be presented. Ironically, the decision to close the smallish hall located next to Piccadilly cemetery and fire substation, came at the first meeting following the death of Coun. Bill Snyder, whose farm is also adjacent to the hall and who was one of its most ardent defenders. The irony wasn’t lost on Council, particularly Dep. Mayor Frances Smith, who searched in vain for a way to save the hall, which played host to a number of events, including the Piccadilly Jam, which eventually outgrew the venue. “This is a difficult one,” Smith said, fighting back tears. “This is Pic Hall . . . “Yes, the cost of heating and electricity (in the halls) is killing us, and the timing couldn’t be worse.

“Could we look at just summer use?” Coun. Tom Dewey also noted the emotion in the room and asked if there was any support to defer the motion or remove the Piccadilly Hall closure from it. But one of the authors of the report, and mover of the resolution, Coun. Norm Guntensperger, said he wasn’t prepared to alter the motion. “As a member of the committee, I stand by the report and the resolution,” he said. Mayor Janet Gutowski also expressed remorse at the timing and closure of the hall but was nevertheless in support of the motion. “I don’t agree with changing the motion,” she said. “Halls cost the taxpayer

a lot and there’s been a decline in usage (at Piccadilly). “Plus, we may have another hall further north (Hinchinbrooke School in Parham) if that should come to fruition. “We’re not covering the cost of these halls.” The three remaining halls, (Kennebec, Olden and Oso) will now cost residents $45 to rent or $75 with kitchen facilities. At Olden Hall in Mountain Grove, either the top or bottom floor may be rented for $45 or both for $75. There are also increases to the hourly rates (to $10/hr from $5/hr with a maximum of three hours), the compassionate rate for funerals (to $15 from $10), the rate charged to service clubs and a seven days notice for cancellation.

Central Frontenac Coun. Bill Snyder dies at age 65 By Craig Bakay Reporter

Bill Snyder

Photo/Submitted

Gazette News — William Philip (Bill) Snyder, current Central Frontenac Councilor, died Saturday, Feb. 22 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kingston. He was in his 66th year. In a gesture of respect, Central Frontenac Council held a minute of silence before removing Snyder’s nameplate from the Council table to be sent to his family. Survived by his wife, Sharon, he was also father figure to Jacey Kennedy (Marco Landry), uncle to Nicki Gowdy (Mike) and “the King” to Simon and Kevin. Snyder was predeceased by his twin sister Wanda Napier and is survived

by eight sisters and their families: Janet Shillington (late Clinton), Lorna Leitch, Ruth Findlater (Ed), Marilyn Ambler (Harvey), Sheila Ellis (Ted), Helene Ouellet (Bernie), Valorie Asselstine (Mike) and Joanne Snyder. A lifelong farmer, Snyder continued to work the family farm in Piccadilly until illness sent him to hospital. He was passionate about his community and carried on a family tradition by serving on township Council in both the old Hinchinbrooke Township and current Central Frontenac Township for 32 years, serving as deputy mayor on several occasions. He missed only the inaugural term of the newly amalgamated Central Frontenac during that time. A few years ago, Snyder was recognized with an award from the Province for 25 years of municipal service. He was also a member of the Albion 109 (Masonic) Lodge. He was interred at the Piccadilly Cemetery Feb. 25 and the family has said a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. “His family is very tired,” said Central Frontenac Mayor Janet Gutowski. “The last few weeks have been difficult.” Despite the amputation of a foot as a result of diabetic

complications and visibly deteriorating health, Snyder still managed to attend several Council meetings this past year, albeit not as many as he once did. Snyder will be remembered fondly by friends and constituents as a tireless defender of the community, particularly when it came to road maintenance and sports/ leisure facilities. He fought for years to have Oak Flats Road fixed up and served on the Arena Board on many of his 32 years in office. He was also known as Council’s spending watchdog when it came to public works projects, especially in the area of equipment purchases and/or vehicle purchases.

Grace Centre shows the beauty of nature with new art exhibit By Mandy Marciniak

R0012561016

Gazette News – The Grace Centre is looking a bit more alive lately thanks to a new art exhibit. Aleta Karstad, Phil Chadwick and Don Munz are part of the Artist and Talk series at the centre, which is now in its second cycle. The idea is to make the Grace Centre a place for art and artists; the events are organized by the Grace Arts Committee and Southern Frontenac Community Services Corporation. This time around, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) was involved in the planning as well. Their new Artist in Residence, Aleta Karstad, kicked off the exhibit, which runs from Feb. 22 to April 30, with a talk about Landscape Art and Science on Feb. 22. Karstad and her husband, naturalist Fred Schueler, were commissioned by the NCC to take

biological inventories (Schueler) and produce paintings (Karstad) of the Frontenac Arch last year during the spring and fall. The end result is a beautiful series of paintings from Karstad and some very useful biological information from Schueler. “We like to explore and research and do art and educate in each of our projects so it is more of a whole package,” explained Karstad. “I’ve illustrated many nature books in the past but since I have been doing landscape art full time. My husband and I will work together. He’ll want to go explore an area and I’ll go and paint it or vice versa. Together we are a team, working together in landscape art and science.” Karstad, who lives with her husband in the Frontenac area, has also done similar work for the NCC in New Brunswick and her finished products were so impressive that Hugh Bennett, the developing

officer in Ontario for the NCC, felt they should be exhibited. He approached the Grace Centre and SFCSC and the new exhibit was created. “We are happy to be here today because we really want to focus on working with community organizations like SFCSC to ensure that these areas get the attention they deserve,” said Bennett before Karstad’s presentation. “The art is so beautiful and it should be displayed for more people to see and maybe even purchase.” Phil Chadwick, a long time friend and colleague of Karstad, also has work on display in the exhibit and will continue the talks on March 8. Chadwick was an extreme weather meteorologist for 37 years with Environment Canada, but painting and art have always been a passion for him too. “I paint almost every day and I paint outside,” explained Chadwick. “I paint whatever catches my eye and I’m in a happy situation where I paint just for the passion of it. I’ve done almost 1,400 paintings and I’ve had some success with selling paintings, but I don’t push, I just love to paint. There are a few paintings that I love and will never sell, but otherwise I’m not married to them and the biggest compliment you can get as an artist is someone Aleta Karstad gave a talk about Landscape Art and Science at the Grace seeing your painting and having Centre on Feb. 22 and showcased her work as artist in residence for the it speak to them and having them Nature Conservancy of Canada. Photo/Mandy Marciniak want it.” Chadwick also has the unique painted it pretty accurately. A lot of ability to see what is coming in the Seven artist Tom Thomson “I can look at his paintings and his paintings are skyscapes and if weather by looking at the clouds, a skill that he has parlayed into deduce the weather before, during you know the language of the sky, a successful talk about Group of and after the painting. He was it is easy to read. I’d really love to pretty true to what he saw and he get that presentation published as a book one day,” added Chadwick. Chadwick will also be joined by Karstad on March 8 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to continue her talk about Landscape Art and Science. Places to explore and things to experience

Kingston School of Dance: alive and thriving By Mark Bergin Columnist

Daytripper - Kingston’s premier artistic dance school, the Kingston School of Dance is alive and well. Thriving, in fact. The non-profit dance organization is going stronger than ever after almost 50 years of training dancers at the pre-professional level. Last month, they moved from their temporary downtown Princess Street location to a well-equipped new studio, also temporary, upstairs at 52 Church Street (the old Harold Harvey Arena). Their next move will take them to their final destination at the J.K. Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning. “We’re told by officials that we’ll be able to move into the Tett on Aug. 1,” said Nadine Baker, Chair of the school’s Board of Directors. “That will bring us into our wonderful new space in time for the first term in September. In 47 years, we have grown to be a vibrant, enthusiastic organization dedicated to enriching the community through dance.” The Kingston School of Dance, which started out as a classical ballet setting, offers many styles of dance. It is the city’s only dance school registered as a not-

for-profit, charitable organization. Any donations get a charitable tax receipt. Melissa Mahady Wilton, one of the school’s teachers and the City of Kingston Dance Engagement Coordinator, said the staff and teachers work as a team to ensure that students receive integrated, consistent dance training across styles and genres. “Our students become strong, versatile dancers acquainted with numerous style: balletic – Cecchetti, RAD, and Vaganova; jazz – Broadway, classical; urban – hip hop, bboying; cultural – Latin, Afro Cuban; and contemporary dance styles like Horton, Graham, contact improvisation,” said Mahady Wilton. The school also has specialized classes in pointe, ballroom, acro, swing and core conditioning. Students range in age from 3 to 80. Instructors include former National Ballet of Canada trained dancers and other highly trained teachers, some of whom have combined degrees in dance, psychology and education. The school’s Artistic Director, Ebon Gage, has devoted his life to dance. Educated at Ryerson University and Canadian College

of Dance, he has run his own dance company and has trained countless young dancers. He stole the hearts of dancers and audiences in Kingston several years back with his choreographic work on Cats. Mahady Wilton explained that in the professional atmosphere of the school, teachers consult to ensure not only that students are challenged, but also that they are ready for those challenges. “For instance, we are very particular about how we prepare ballet students for pointe work, and look at age, maturity, technical achievement, weekly minimum standards of ballet training, and four stages of physical readiness,” she said. “This means that when our dancers move to pointe work, the risk of injury is reduced, and they progress quickly and with strong technique. Students also learn that dance requires discipline, and that advanced areas of technique, such as pointe work, are a privilege that require the investment of many hours of hard work both inside and outside the studio.” “We’re different from other schools and I am so proud of that,” said Baker. “There’s a reason that I’m part of the board. Our focus is on the art and technique of dance.

There’s of the Stallone the Dog

Handsome Stallone was previously adopted from us but unfortunately returned as he was uncomfortable living with children. As a result, we feel that an adult only home would be best for Stallone. However, don’t let that discourage you! He is a true gentleman. He takes treats very nicely, and is house-trained and mildmannered. He loves playing with his Kongs and would probably enjoy a slow-paced game of fetch. Come meet Stallone today!

Dancers rehearse at the Kingston School of Dance. The artistic company’s temporary studio is located at 52 Church Street. They are preparing for their move into the J.K. Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning for their September Photo/Mark Bergin It’s not-for-profit, which means all the funds from fees, fundraising, donations, everything, it all goes directly back to the school and the only costs that incurred are for basic salaries and facilities. No one is making a buck on this.” She said she sees the difference in the kind of students the school produces and works with. “There’s an artistic effort and loyalty to the art of dance that you don’t find when there’s competition,” she said. “The students like to pay it forward. They learn and pass along their skills to the younger children.” She described a senior student who asked Ebon Gage, the Artistic Director, how she could be more involved. When asked why, she answered, “It’s such a big part of my life. I just want to do everything I can for the school.” “That’s huge,” said Baker. “And she’s not the only one. Ebon and

the other teachers instill that.” “Students mentor and look out for one another,” said Mahady Wilton. “We are frequently commended on the family atmosphere we have at KSD, and as a teacher, I am constantly humbled by how caring and supportive our students are towards one another.” She explained that the guiding philosophy shared by the Board, Artistic Director and staff results in dance education grounded in both technical ability as well as artistic expression, so that their dancers can fully realize their potential for creativity and communication as performing artists. “The school welcomes and treats all students as equals, irrespective of age or ability,” she said. “All of our classes are inclusive and welcome individuals with learning differences or special needs. Central scores $2 million grant to complete paving of Fifth Lake Road Reporter

Gazette News — Central Frontenac Township has received a grant in the amount of $2 million to pave Fifth Lake Road, CAO/Clerk Larry Donaldson told Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. The grant will cover twothirds of the project, meaning the Township will have to come up with $1 million. Mayor Janet Gutowski said this grant is in addition to the $1.8 million the Township received to pave Wagerville Road (a $2 million project), which connects with Fifth Lake Road. “This means we will have asphalt all the way from Parham to Tamworth,” Gutowski said. Other than Roads 38 and 509, the other surface-treated (paved) roads in the Township are made from lower grade tar and chip surfaces. The grant comes from the Province’s small rural and northern communities fund. ••• A request for Central

Frontenac Council to declare May 10 as World Lupus Day as well as October as Lupus Awareness Month pretty much fell on deaf ears at Central Frontenac Council. “I think it’s time for a policy regarding declaring special days,” said Dep. Mayor Frances Smith. “There are so many diseases out there.” ••• The hours at the Parham Post Office will be cut back, effective March 17, Council learned in a letter from Canada Post at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. The outlet will now be closed on Saturday, and open Monday to Wednesday and Fridays from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. On Thursdays, it will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. “If you work, I guess you get your mail on Thursdays,” said Coun. Frances Smith. In another letter, Canada Post said it is also considering cutting hours at the Godfrey Post Office, eliminating Saturday service and service

between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on weekdays. Canada Post cited declining usage and increased costs as the reasons for the cutbacks. ••• Central Frontenac has decided to go with the Provincial Ombudsman as its closed meeting investigator, following a recommendation from CAO/Clerk Larry Donaldson. Up until the end of 2013, Central had an agreement with Frontenac County and the three other member townships to use Fournier Consulting Services if residents wanted any particular closed sessions (also referred to as ‘in camera) looked into. “We had been paying $330 to the consultant as a retainer,” Donaldson said. “But as there were no requests for investigation, the consultant has withdrawn his services. “The Ombudsman is the default investigator for the Province and there is no cost to us for it so I don’t think there’s a big risk to not having a separate investigator.” R0012575552

up with. He was definitely not a spin doctor and didn’t seem to have much use for anybody who was. I’m proud to say I thought of Bill as a friend, even though occasionally I had to print things that might not have painted him in the most favourable of lights. But, you know what, if I did, I never heard about it from him. I think Bill and I understood each other. For one thing, we’re both farm boys and for another, we grew up in municipal politics families, his dad and grandfather both having served. We had many enjoyable conversations about the ‘old days’ of country politics and a goodly number of laughs as well. Diplomacy wasn’t Bill’s strong suit, but you know, he always seemed to get his pet concerns addressed. It took years for him to get Oak Flats Road re-built but I remember him being only too happy to show it off when it was done and his more-than-willing, almost insistent attitude at posing for a picture while standing in the middle of said road. He reminded me of our great Cana-

dian symbol, the beaver, on many occasions. You could dynamite his dam but sooner or later, the dam would be back, often when you’d least expect it. I said he wasn’t the greatest diplomat in the world, but there was one area where he could be quite diplomatic — when talking about his family. The poor guy was the only boy in a family with nine sisters and one of my favourite all-time interviews was Bill talking about his growing-up experience in that situation. That part of the interview was the one and only time he insisted on being “off the record, but even though I can’t write it, I sure as hell can still laugh remembering some of the stories he had to tell about his early years. Council didn’t discuss whether his seat would remain vacant until the end of the term (December of this year) but I’m guessing they won’t appoint somebody to replace him for such a short time and as well, it’s a fitting tribute. Besides, how do you replace a oneof-a-kind guy like Bill Snyder? Farewell my friend. You will be missed.

Gazette Column — There was only one Bill Snyder. Some (his political opponents most likely) might say that was a good thing but I’m not one of them. Bill was one of those old school municipal politicians who really seemed to put the people that elected him first. I can’t count the number of times my phone rang after a particularly divisive Council meeting. It was usually late at night. Bill didn’t mince words. He told you exactly what was on his mind and not once did he ever say “don’t print that. (He did, on one or two occasions say “maybe you’d better not say it came from me.) But Bill was one of those guys who actually seemed to believe that the truth was more important than any artificial rules Council may have come

Gazette Editorial - A blow was struck, albeit at the last minute, against the forces of intolerance this week when Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed a bill that would allow business owners the right to refuse service to people who violated their religious beliefs – coded language for the ability to refuse service to homosexuals. Republican senators were forced to acquiesce this time, however it is believed that the case will eventually be brought to the Supreme Court. In fact, there a dozen states who are contemplating similar laws in the wake of the Supreme Court striking down parts of the Defense of Marriage Law in 2013. Around the world, however, the political might of the LGBTQ movement has not quite been as keenly felt. A resurgent evangelical brand of Christianity is making its voice heard, particularly in Uganda, where 85 per cent of the population defines itself as Evangelical Christian. For those not following the developments there, Ugandan authorities have recently instituted a bill that will make any homosexual act punishable by life imprisonment. Legislators had originally wanted the death penalty, but the government bowed before international pressure. In fact, last week a Ugandan recently published the names of 200 homosexuals under the headline ‘Exposed!. Some those listed were known publically as gay, however many of them were not. One can imagine many a blind eye being turned if by chance several of them should go missing overnight. This is not the act of Christians. Putting people to death and depriving them of their freedom for homosexual acts is straight out of Leviticus, and it should be discarded with the other antiquated prohibitions found within the scriptures like ‘going to church within 33 days of giving birth to a boy (12:4), going to church within 66 days of giving birth to a girl (12:5), and selling an Israelite as slave (25:39 the implication here being that foreigners are fine for the purpose, which later is explicitly stated). These commandments have absolutely no place within the laws of the modern state. There is little doubt, in this paper’s view, that the fight for LGBTQ rights is to the 21st century what the fight against racism and apartheid was to the 20th. Those who would enact and enforce laws against this community will be remembered in the same light as lynch mobs and Ku Klux Klan members. We stand hand in hand with the LGBTQ community, and we strongly encourage others to do the same. We long for the day when they will no longer have to fight tooth and nail for the world’s acceptance.

Kingston School of Dance: alive and thriving Continued from page 6

We also live our values of accessibility through providing PRO Kids funding, bursaries, the use of a costume inventory, and a dance shoe fund, so that no student is denied the opportunity to learn or perform due to economic circumstances. The culture of the school stresses respect, teamwork, and mutual accountability.” Mahady Wilton explained that students are encouraged to work towards earning a place in the school company, which provides them with excellent pre-professional experience working in a dance company environment. “Combined with classes such as Repertoire, where they learn choreography from major works, taught by a former National Ballet of Canada dancer, students have incredible opportunities to experience aspects of life as a member of a dance company,” she said. “Students are also encouraged to pursue artistic development through master classes, summer intensives or work with choreographers.” For the next several months,

the school will continue its operations at 52 Church Street. Baker said the City of Kingston was helpful and accommodating in allowing access to the space. “Even though it’s a temporary location, it’s a custom designed dance studio with our brand new floors that have been in storage,” said Baker. “The city has been great. They gutted the space and designed every inch the way we wanted it. They were so kind about it all. You can see how bright it is. We’ve got mirrors on three walls out of four, and the dancers love that.” She said that the location is ideal because of the ample parking, which wasn’t available in their previous temporary location. “And when the good weather comes we have the park and playground next door,” she said. During the summer, Kingston School of Dance will again offer dance camps for 6to 12-year-olds. The programs will be held at the Church Street site during the weeks of July 7 to 11 and July 14 - 18, from 8:30 to 4:30 each day.

“Students will have the opportunity to work in different styles,” said Baker. “We’ll have them in ballet, hip hop, contemporary and jazz. They’ll also get a chance to work on set design and costuming.” Then, in August comes the move to the Tett Centre. The Kingston School of Dance staff members are excited about the potential. “It is going to be a wonderful new space,” said Baker. “We will have three studios: one huge and the other at the back with a room divider enabling us to run more classes for young and up and coming dancers. We are going to have the space to invite guest choreographers and different types of artists not showcased enough in Kingston. When we were designing our space we spoke with the engineers to make sure we can have an anchor for aerial and acro arts that people like Erin Ball provide.” Baker noted that returning to the Tett Centre will provide opportunities for Tett tenants to collaborate. “The camaraderie among the tenants is exciting,” she said. “There’s a happiness of

being in a space dedicated to the arts. There will be lots of cross pollination.” She said there will be possibilities for offering combined workshops/ performances by organizations like the Kingston School of Dance and Theatre Kingston. The region’s premier dance school will finally have a home in an arts and cultural centre worthy of the artistic level of the Kingston School of Dance. Mayor Meets Ministers at ROMA/OGRA conference By Margaret Knott Correspondent

Gazette news- For the third year in a row, Frontenac Islands Mayor Denis Doyle met with the Ontario Minister of Transportation to discuss transportation to the islands and the urgent need for an increase in ferry capacity. The first time in 2012 he and former Howe Island councillor Pat Norris met with the then Minister Bob Chiarelli at the ROMA/OGRA conference in Ottawa. “His message was that if we wanted a new ferry we best find $30 million or so ourselves,” Mayor Doyle said at the time. The second and third year meetings have been with the present Minister of Transportation Glen Murray. Following the 2013 meeting, Mayor Doyle returned home pretty happy. He felt Minister Murray had come to the meeting well briefed on the islands transportation file including the 2011 Wolfe Island Ferry study which recommended a 2nd, new 75 car vessel maybe within 4 years if all else, (ea’s ,dock design boat design, contracts, construction etc.) was completed to join the Wolfe Islander !!!. There was no mention of an immediate, (temporary fix ) at the time such as finding another ferry somewhere. Mayor Doyle said it was obvious that Minister Murray wanted to do something. He questioned why the bridge option identified as the best long term solution was dropped in favour of the 75 car ferry option. (The answer rests with what comes of Kingston’s 3rd Crossing agenda.) The Minister directed his staff to look at all options including the bridge option and MTO’s Eastern region to reactivate the discussion around both Howe and Wolfe Island’s transportation issues to make something happen. Between then and now of course budget and financial issues in Ontario stalled decisions regarding ur. Any provincial time. Never expire! infrastructure.

Regarding the Frontenac Howe Island ferry, Doyle noted the bubbler system can be repaired if using the same footprint. “However if there was to be a major change like laying a new pipe, making it wider etc., it would require approval from fisheries and oceans, environment, and natural resources and, of course a lot money and time to get it done. Doyle said Kingston’s Mayor Mark Gerretsen also had a meeting with Transportation Minister Murray looking for 3rd crossing support. “It seems all Glen Murray wanted to talk about was bridges to the islands and suggested that Mayor Gerretsen get together with the local MTO office and US to develop a regional plan. The Minister strongly supports the importance of planning, maintaining and building new infrastructure.. not just for solving problems but for the economy generally,

commenting that Infrastructure spending is down from 5% of GDP in the past to 2%,” Mayor Doyle said, According to Doyle, in a speech Minister Murray touted Sir John A. MacDonald as an example of one who went ahead with the railroad at a time when there was no money and no Canada.. 2. In January Frontenac Islands council supported a resolution requesting the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to petition the Province of Ontario to recognize the December 2013 ice storm as an emergency and provide special funding to municipalities affected to offset some of the costs incurred. “ It may not help but there is no harm in asking,” Mayor Doyle said at the time. And he was right! At the ROMA/OGRA conference he and Mrs Doyle met Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing MPP Linda Jeffrey, MPP at a casual event where in conversation she said there would be some funding available for clean-up as a result of the storm. A press release on Feb. 26th confirmed her comments. It states that Ontario is helping municipalities affected by the December 2013 ice storm by working with the federal government to fund 100 per cent of their eligible recovery costs through a one-time Ice Storm Assistance Program with eligible costs as much as $190 million based on estimates from municipalities related to immediate emergency response and the subsequent cleanup of

debris. “ Frontenac Islands is one of the 30 municipalities listed thus far requesting assistance. It is nice to see our request did not fall on deaf ears and we now have a chance to get some money to help with the cleanup,” Mayor Doyle concluded. 3. Island Heroes: The township was made aware of the many island winter heroes who helped others with the snow and drifting in January from a resident who names in particular Allen Hulton “ who kept the 9th line , Carpenter Point open, sometimes Baseline, often in time for me to make the 5:45 boat. Allan was not the only person

helping neighbours but rather he was probably typical,” he said. Mayor Doyle (who sent me the note) had this to say: “We as a community have a lot of unsung heroes out there that have pitched in to help neighbours during the worst winter in recent history. So what about the 2014 meeting with Minister Murray? Mayor Doyle said it was a good meeting with the minister. “I also had opportunities to talk with him further on a number of occasions throughout the conference and

he has directed his staff to work with Frontenac Islands and MTO locally. MTO’s Eastern Regional Director Kathy Moore also had some comments to make about on our request for a second ferry on Wolfe Island for this coming summer, a service they have at Glenora in recognition of tourism,. She said it is very difficult to find a “fresh water” ferry to fill the need but the looking continues… Salt water ferries rust away….. ( It’s 1 ferry in the off season- 2 in summer at Glenora)

This year, local philanthropist Vicky MacMunn found a way to make Roll Up the Rim to Win even better: she’s collecting free coffee and donut vouchers from her friends and co-workers and distributing them to homeless people on the street. “Just watching people, how cold they are and stuff, it makes you feel like you want to help them, and if you can help them why not,” she says. Initially, MacMunn challenged her roommate, Shawn, to give away

Up in my grill

The Table Comes First By Kate Kristiansen Correspondent

At an early age, former Gourmet magazine editor and bestselling author of Tender At The Bone, Ruth Reichl, discovered that “food is a way of making sense of the world. If you watched people as they ate and cooked you could find out who they were.” I couldn’t agree more - and it all begins and ends at the table. I can still imagine myself as a child, no more than three, perched under the large teak dining table at my grandmother’s house. Mom had long given up trying to convince me to sit alongside the large family huddled around it. I preferred my hideout, the perfect vantage for listening to the endless conversations from the adults as they ate. The long white tablecloth providing a dark tent to my seat, I would sit quietly, dodging guests’ feet so as not to be discovered. I can still see Grandma at the stove, stirring and tasting. Once everyone

was served she would take a seat, and not a minute before. As everyone gabbed and gobbled, she would often hand me a roll with butter, serving me under the table with a wink and a finger to her lips. It seems that whether we are seated at the head of the table or underneath it, its presence at meal time is essential to our appreciation of the food we eat. Today, many households eat dinner in front of the television. As a community we appear to have forgotten the importance of eating together. I can appreciate how hard it is to have children sit at the table. I was one of the difficult ones. However, the simple practice of seeing adults eat together and learning to appreciate the magic of dinner debates is arguably a rite of passage. You can learn more about those you love from grunts and groans gleaned through mouthfuls at the dinner table than anywhere else. The amount of sharing that goes on at the table can be the best therapy, even when it ends in an argument. This

A guide to culinAry hAppenings And seAsonAl food

appreciation of family and structure needs to start at a young age. Food is of great importance these days. Fueling our obsession is the Food Network and reality cooking shows along with social media, which provides us with an easy way to communicate what we are eating. But the spirit of all this has not translated to the table. In fact, it is often at odds with the social nature. We appear consumed by photos of food rather than the memories of the clatter of voices surrounding eating or preparing it. You can tell your story through food. If you wish to catalogue all of your experiences, you can do so by the meals you’ve eaten. Recipes are able to provide a symphony of characters just as photographs do for others. I am a collector of recipes from each country or home that I visit. I love to purchase cookbooks from local chefs of a particular region, forgoing the cliché souvenirs. But, my ongoing favorites are the worn out magazine

clippings and slips of yellowing paper from family, friends and even strangers, such as the kiwi jam from a kind lady who once gave me a place to sleep while travelling. Each is a memory of where I’ve been. I see the places in my mind as I taste these recipes. I feel hot sand between my toes and the warm ocean spray while eating salty fish and chips and sipping a glass of smoky red pinot noir. My husband and I learned the importance of the table early on, both in our homes growing up and when we started on our journey together. Our first purchase was a table, which was delivered minutes before a dinner party. It was small and sat six people, (truthfully four comfortably). The deliverymen had to lift it out and over our balcony to fit it into our tiny space. We dined on that story from this table for years. My daughter ate dinner with us long before she could hold her head up; she would sit in her baby bouncy seat on the tabletop while we ate. (Carefully watched,

Kate Kristiansen

of course.) Even now, when it’s just the two of us home she will say, “Why is the table not set?” More often than not, you will find us dining at the table, hunkered over a meal, lost in conversation. While we don’t talk with our mouths full (most of the time) there is always discussion. In our home the table is not a quiet place. A few years back, I had a table made for us out of recycled barn wood. The family name was etched underneath it as it came out of the shop. Many would consider sanding this away for aesthetics, but I am pleased that it is there. It is a reminder that this table is where our family meets. My grandchildren will hide under it so I can slip them treats. It will one day belong to my daughter and sit in her home. I am hopeful that she will remember that in our family, the table always comes first. “No concerns” on more than half of the septic systems inspected under voluntary program By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — Of the 65 septic systems inspected as part of the (voluntary) 2013 re-inspection program, only two needed replacing, inspector Eric Kohlsmith of the MississippiRideau Septic System Office told Central Frontenac Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. Of the balance “55 per cent had no concerns (36 systems), 37 per cent (24 systems) needed only remedial work, most of that pumping out and there were three systems where we required more information, such as the actual location of the bed.” The inspections were done under the auspices of the Mississippi and Rideau Conservation Authorities, but Kohlsmith reminded Council that the Healthy Unit, rather than Conservation Authorities, is the governing body for septic systems. Coun. Norm Guntensperger asked if anyone refused access to the inspectors. “Yeah, about 500 refused access,” Kohlsmith joked. “It was a voluntary program and we only went to the ones who signed up for it.” He said 645 packages were mailed out to property owners asking them to participate in the program. Of that, 61 properties were removed from the list Gazette Events – Iconic Canadian singer songwriter Bruce Cockburn for various reasons. He said that about plays to an enthusiastic packed house at the Grand Theatre in Kingston 51 per cent of property owners were on Feb 22nd. Photo/John Harman present during the inspections. systems listed with an “unknown” water source. All systems on both lakes were more than 15 metres from the water, with 40 per cent of septic/holding tanks and 38 per cent of leaching beds on Kennebec Lake more than 30 metres from the water. The numbers were similar on Sharbot Lake, with half of the septic/ holding tanks more than 300 metres from the lake and 53 per cent of the leaching beds more than 50 metres from the lake. He said nine of the systems inspected required pump outs, 23 showed some concrete corrosion, 11 had baffles that required maintenance (broken/roots), nine had roots in the tank and there were five non-compliant privies.

There are five classes of septic system and the majority of those inspected (74 per cent) were Class 4 (septic tank and distribution field). Another 18 per cent were Class 1 systems (earth pit, vault, pail and portable privies), 5 per cent were Class 2 (greywater systems), 4 per cent were Class 5 (holding tanks) and only 1 per cent were Class 3 (cesspools). Canada’s Winter Olympics effort deserves praise Gazette Lifestyle – No, Canada didn’t “Own the Podium” at the 22nd Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. But after repeating as both men’s and women’s hockey gold medalists and sweeping curling for the first time since the sport returned to the Olympics in 1998 it felt like we did. Arguably men’s hockey is the most coveted medal of all at the Winter Olympics. Canada won the final event of the Sochi games in style, shutting out Sweden 3-0. Our team allowed just three goals in six tournament games. I think the most exciting moment of the games was the Canadian women’s 3-2 overtime triumph over the Americans in the gold medal final, one week ago today. But then I would, wouldn’t I. I am a proud Canadian! Our athletes also proved that curling, which was invented in Scotland, has like hockey, become “Canada’s game.” Jennifer Jones’ ladies rink went undefeated, another first at the Winter Olympics. The men’s hockey result Sunday, Feb. 23 gave Canada third place in gold medal finishes with 10. Overall we were fourth with 25 medals including 10 silver and five bronze. Host Russia topped the table with 33 medals, including 13 gold while Norway edged Canada for third with 26 including 11 first place finishes. Our continental rival, the United States, achieved the second highest medal count at these games with 28. Nine were gold, but 12 third place bronze raised the American total. There are always critics of course. Some pundits will say that by failing to top the 26 medals (including 14 gold) our country achieved at the Vancouver Winter Olympics four years ago, Sochi was a failure for Canada. I beg to differ. Canada’s Winter Olympics effort deserves high praise! Besides hockey and curling Canada was also a powerhouse in freestyle skiing in Russia. We captured nine medals including four gold, four silver and a bronze. Among the freestyle highlights was a pair of thrilling gold-silver finishes. Canada has clearly cemented its reputation as a force to be reckoned with at the Winter Olympics. The stated objective of Canadian officials was to finish atop the medal standings as well as surpassing our best ever showing in Vancouver. That’s the trouble with predictions. They can come back to haunt you. To me there are so many things that

have to be taken into account when comparing the Vancouver games with the Sochi version. The most obvious is that in Vancouver we held many of the cards. The competitions were staged on our snow, our ice. Canadians had far more control and therefore we were in an extremely positive position from the get go. IOC criticized Let’s face it the governing International Olympic Committee (IOC) is very open to criticism. Allegations of bribery, corruption, coercion, doping and preOlympic “deals” have dogged the IOC throughout its existence. The examples are endless involving both the summer and winter games. Selecting Sochi as the site of the 2014 Winter Games only heightened suspicions among the IOC’s critics that the “fix was in.” Despite Mikhail Gorbachev and “Perestroika”, the demolition of the Berlin Wall (in 1989) and all of that, the Russia of today isn’t exactly viewed as a “free and open society.” Certainly not in the west at least! The word “democracy” continues to ring hollow in that vast nation. As for the IOC why, for example, did the selection committee settle on balmy Sochi? They could have picked Salzburg, Austria which had most of the necessary facilities already in place at the time the decision on a site was taken. The Sochi games turned out to be the most expensive Winter Olympics in history, a staggering $51 billion (US). Concern peaked in the days leading up to the games when stories emerged that judges from the US and Russia had

conspired to ensure that marking for certain events would favour each other’s athletes. An odd partnership to be sure! But because judges’ marks are no longer posted there is no way to verify if that rampant rumour actually played out? Some Canadian luge athletes, along with Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the Canadian skaters who went into these games as one of the favourites to repeat as gold medalists in the ice dance competition, could no doubt add fuel to the tampering fire. The coach of the Canadian luge relay team is convinced the integrity of the track was changed. Canada finished fourth despite looking like a good bet for silver partway through the race. The angry coach says softer ice at the bottom slowed his team’s run just enough that they finished out of the medals. He suspects the track was heated. Meanwhile many others, including ice dance watchers from other nations, are suspicious of the marking which saw Canadians Virtue and Moir claim second place silver instead of the predicted gold. To their credit the young skaters refuse to blame judging. Their concern is coaching. In this case they shared a coach with the gold medal winning US pair of Meryl Davis and Charlie White. The Canadian couple, who are friends of the winners, said after the competition that coach Marina Zoueva focused most of her attention on the American pairs’ program which, ultimately, may have been to the Canadians’ detriment. I am only focusing on Canadian athletes. I could easily write a separate

column about the various concerns and allegations voiced by athletes, coaches and officials from other participating nations. That’s especially true of the always controversial sport of figure skating. The ongoing contention that politics and money trump sports and international goodwill, when it comes to the Olympic Games, has no doubt gained supporters in the wake of these games. But when it comes to the Winter Games at least, Canada has definitely risen to the challenge. Our athletes are better financed, better supported and clearly much better prepared than they have ever been. The number of medals they accumulate should not be the only measuring stick! The margin between winning and losing is so thin that many factors enter the mix. For example, Canadian speed skater Charles Hamelin won gold in the men’s 1,500 metre sprint. Sadly he suffered rare falls which eliminated him from both the 1,000 metre and the 500 metre (his best event) competitions. Consider how competitive Canadian athletes were overall. Our people were in the finals of so many events and with a little luck – another big factor during the Olympics – we might have claimed

several more medals including the prized gold. Tight fourth place finishes in several competitions could just as easily have ended on the podium. One only has to look back as far as 1988 and the Calgary games to see how far our Winter Olympic program has progressed. In Calgary we claimed just five medals, including the silver claimed by Ottawa figure skater Elizabeth Manley. Canada has come a long way since Calgary. With an improved commitment in terms of federal government and corporate funding our athletes are almost certain to be a major factor in future games. For our Winter Olympic athletes it is now “Pyeongchang or bust!” Well, don’t consider the last word in my previous sentence. I believe our next Winter Olympic performance in South Korea, four years from now, will be anything but a bust. Still, let’s go lighter on predictions. No point putting unnecessary pressure on our athletes, especially when you consider how many factors are involved in success or failure during the Olympics. Enchanté

Enchanting and fascinating people….and their world

Renaissance boy By Mark Bergin Columnist

Conor Gaudet, 11, is an active sports kid who, by his own admission, decided to broaden his horizons. Last year, he took part in the school play, earning the role of Dormouse in Alice in Wonderland. He also entered a speech-writing/public speaking competition sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. He advanced through the early levels. This year he’s gone further. Conor’s Grade 6 teacher at John XXIII Catholic School in Collins Bay, Amy Cuthbert-Brown, said preparations for this year’s public speaking event have been hectic. “We got back from Christmas holidays and went right into speech-writing mode for the whole month,” she said. “All the speeches were presented in class during the last week of January. Three kids were chosen to represent the class in the gym.” Conor placed first at John XXIII and then went to the Royal Canadian Legion’s Captain Matthew J. Dawe Memorial Branch 631 to represent the school. “Conor won there and went on to represent the zone at Sharbot Lake,” said Cuthbert-Brown. “He won there on February 22. Next he goes to Manotick for the eastern Ontario District finals.” The Legion’s Public Speaking Contest is part of the organization’s Youth and Education program. According to statistics on the Legion’s website, last year, 11,545 students participated in the contest. The individual chooses his or her own subject for the address. The contest is broken into four categories: Grades 1—3; Grades 4—6; Grades 7—9; and Grades 10—12. Each contestant is

allowed a three to five minute speech, except the Grade 10 to 12 group, which is allotted five to seven minutes for the speech duration. After the District level, winning contestants move on to the Provincial Finals, which are held on the first Saturday of May each year. The winning student and one parent in each Grade division from the four Legion Areas is offered an all-expenses paid trip to the site of the provincial finals. The finalist in each Grade Division at the provincial level receives a cash prize, which increases with grade levels. The winner of the Grade 4 to Grade 6 group, in which Conor is competing, will receive a gold medal and $300. The runner up receives a silver medal and $100. Conor’s speech is about bad habits. His own. “He’s a natural born public speaker,” said Cuthbert-Brown. “He’s pretty funny. In his speech, he talks about how he loses everything, but through technology finds things. He has a special app on his iPhone to find it when he loses it. He talks about how lucky he is to be a hockey player because when he loses things, his name is on his equipment so it gets returned to him. He also talked about how he’s a messy eater and how his parents are constantly picking up after him, so they should purchase a robotic vacuum to follow him around. He said he’s a picky eater and wants to go outside the box, but not too far.” For example, in his speech he said he’s resolved to try avocado and chick peas, but didn’t want to travel as far as Brussels sprouts and sushi. “I kind of joke at myself,” said Conor. “I am always misplacing things and I’m messy and a picky eater.” He loves sports, especially basketball at his school. But the young point guard says his favorite

sport is really golf. He plays at the Amherstview Golf Club. He’s also on the Kingston Canadians rep hockey team. “Conor has always enjoyed playing sports, since he was very little,” said Kristy Dillon, Conor’s mom. “On his third birthday, he got a basketball net for his room and he would throw the ball at it for long periods of time.” She said that Conor’s dad is on leave and Conor has already planned that his dad could pick him up at lunch and they could head to the golf course to hit a few balls on the range over the lunch break. “He is usually game to try anything,” said Dillon. “Conor has always been a happy kid and kind child. People often comment on the fact that he always has a smile on his face. We are very proud of him.” “He’s an all around great kid, whether it’s in academics or athletics,” said Cuthbert-Brown. “He gives 110% in everything he does. He’s one of the leaders of the class. His work ethic is unbelievable. He tries everything and excels at everything.” His teachers call him a positive role model in the school. “He’s the most polite person,” said CuthbertBrown. “He always says ‘thank you’ walking out the door at the end of the day and he’s always thanking his coaches for taking the time to coach.” A chat with the young lad is interesting. Whether it’s sports or arts and culture, he’s on the ball. When discussing literature I asked about his favorite genre. “Historical fiction,” he said. I had to remind myself that I was talking with an 11-year-old. In movies, he prefers sports-oriented flicks like The Greatest Game Ever Played, which is about golf. “It combines sport and intellect,” he said. “I also like Hoosiers, but I prefer short TV shows to movies.”

Mark Bergin

Conor Gaudet, a Grade 6 student, has reached the District level of the Legion’s speech writing and public speaking contest. He will travel to Manotick to compete. The winner of that event goes to the provincial finals. Photo/Mark Bergin Conor has always attended the same elementary school. “I really like it here,” he said. “I like the extracurricular events like the school plays, sports and the eco team. I want to expand my interests, instead of just playing sports.” He keeps trying new things. But sushi and Brussels sprouts are still not on the horizon.

High School athlete of the week

No pinning down wrestler’s energetic personality By Mark Kerr Reporter

Gazette Sports -- Wrestling is such a tough, physical sport that you might think athletes would struggle to keep their emotions in check. Not so for Jessica Waltner, a grappling standout at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School. “I always try to have a positive attitude when wrestling. Anger is not helpful,” said Waltner, who won the Individual Spirit of Wrestling Trophy for her sportsmanship, dedication and the embodiment of the wrestler’s spirit at this year’s Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association (EOSSAA)

Film’s mix of genres may leave audience with questions Mark Haskins

My Take mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette Arts – I spent a lot of time starring at the screen in disbelief. 3 Days to Kill was something. I’m not sure what it was, but it was definitely something. After finding out he has terminal cancer Ethan Runner (Kevin Costner) decides to quit the C.I.A. and reconnect with the daughter and wife he left five years ago. His wife Christine (Connie Nielsen) is reluctant, but under the circumstances is willing to allow Ethan to spend some time with his daughter, provided he’s really given up killing for the C.I.A. His daughter Zooey (Hailee Steinfeld), who knows nothing of what’s going on, is now a bitter

teenager and less than impressed. It isn’t easy but things go as well as expected for Ethan and Zooey. Then two things happen. First, Christine is called out of town for a couple of days leaving Ethan to look after Zooey on his own. Second, Vivi Delay (Amber Heard) another C.I.A. operative needs Ethan for one more job. There’s an arms dealer called The Wolf (Richard Sammel), and Ethan is the only person who’s seen his face. Vivi wants Ethan to find him and kill him, and for this she’s willing to give him an experimental treatment that can extend his life. Ethan takes the job, but it leaves him trying to balance his life as an assassin and a father. He’s a highly skilled assassin but a lousy father. When the two worlds collide it’s almost too much for him to handle. 3 Days to Kill is a mess. Part of the film is this absurdly funny comedy. Another part of the film is this heartwarming story about a dying father reconnecting with his teenage daughter. Yet another part of this film is a brutally violent spy flick. It crosses

these boundaries you wouldn’t normally cross, and maybe shouldn’t. But then again maybe that is the point. 3 Days to Kill definitely doesn’t fit any movie formula I know of. It’s unique, it’s interesting, it’s definitely not boring, and each of those parts taken on its own are done really well. I’m just not convinced that those three parts mixed together make a good movie. The dialogue, the visuals and the cast are all quite good. Hailee Steinfeld plays the bitter and rebellious teenager perfectly. Connie Nielsen has a real presence on the screen. I found Amber Heard’s character confusing and unnecessarily disturbing though I suspect that was more of a directorial decision than an actor’s choice. Kevin Costner on the other hand is fantastic. He’s a great actor and it doesn’t matter what kind of mess he’s in his talent shines through. I admire the attempt to do something unique, but I don’t think they pulled it off. Still, I think 3 Days to Kill is one of those films you have to see for yourself, and make up your own mind.
