Auditorium renovations EMC News – Environmental services manager Tom Mercer shows off the auditorium at Fairmount Home in Glenburnie where renovations are proceeding nicely. Although it looks strangely smaller, the footprint of the room remains the same and will be enhanced by the addition of an 18-foot wide service area, new windows, storage space, dressing room for performers, a new audio/visual system with wireless hearing assist capabilities, ground level entry and a four-season greenhouse Photo/Craig Bakay

Frontenac County could be eligible for up to $300,000 for ‘community paramedicine’ By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — The call for applications to access an Ontario government program that would fund community paramedicine projects came out March 10, but the deadline is April 17 for proposals, Paramedics Chief Paul Charbonneau told Frontenac County Council at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. “We can qualify for up to $300,000 in funding but the deadline is fast approaching meaning we will have to move quickly,” Charbonneau said. In January, the government announced its intentions to come up with funding of $6 million province-wide. Community paramedicine was one of the key recommendations in Dr. Samir

Sinha’s report on seniors health care released in 2012. Charbonneau has argued for more community paramedicine in the past and even set up a pilot project involving a series of ‘wellness clinics’ on Wolfe Island conducted by paramedics. County Council funded the project to the tune of $1,500 and Frontenac Islands Mayor Denis Doyle said he was pleased with the results. But the pilot project is coming to the end of its mandate this spring and Doyle strongly urged Council to pursue the provincial funding program. The idea is that getting paramedics more involved in the areas of primary care, public health, disease management, prevention and wellness, mental health and oral health can not only provide services to rural residents where

such care is either in short supply or totally non-existent, but this pro-active approach can also save money in the long run by cutting down on 911 calls and expensive trips to emergency rooms. Typically, rural areas are underserved medically and Frontenac County is no exception, Charbonneau said, adding that are even aspects of the program that will apply to the City of Kingston. “The community paramedic program adapts to the specific needs and resources of each community,” he said. To that extent, he said they plan to work closely with existing organizations such as the Local Health Integration Networks and community services groups such as South Frontenac Community Services and Northern Fronte-

nac Community Services. But while Council was in agreement with the principle and expressed desire to improve health care services, particularly where seniors are involved, there were some concerns expressed. “I find this interesting in light of our budget discussions,” said Coun. Gary Davison. “This seems somewhat contrary to that. “Is your union going to buy into this or is it going to have to be a push?” “It is a discussion we will be having next week,” Charbonneau said. Charbonneau said he will be meeting with the various community groups on the subject and is expected to bring a report to the April 16 meeting containing his recommendations as to whether to proceed with applications or not.

South Frontenac hopes to improve new website and boost tourism through photo contest mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette News – The Verona Cattail Festival, the Battersea Pumpkin Festival and the Duct Tape Boat Races. These are just a few of the annual events that happen throughout South Frontenac, events that the township hopes to showcase on their new website - but they need your help. “This year we’ve launched a photo contest as a way to promote our website and try to direct traffic to it,â€? explained Wayne Orr, South Frontenac Township CAO. “We also want to highlight the fun, family times that can be found in South Frontenac‌.This gives us a chance to show the activities that people are enjoying throughout the year. We really want to showcase what is going on in the community.â€? The township launched their new website in January, but this contest is really their first push to improve the overall quality of the site in terms of visual appeal. “We are trying to make it a communication hub for the township. We want it to be a one-stop shop for township activities,â€? said Orr. “We’ve added features that allow people to post their own community events. We’ve already seen people using it to post things like suppers and other smaller community events, now we just need to improve the photos.â€? The contest launched March 8 and runs until April 30 and Orr hopes that

during that time he receives numerous different submissions. The main criteria are that the photo should be taken in South Frontenac, it should be a high quality digital image and it should be of people enjoying life in the township. “Ideally the photos will be beyond just scenery, added Orr. “We are looking to see people engaged in whatever the photo is showing and that may be family shots, as long as they are appropriate and can be used for a variety of materials. We are also looking for cross-seasonal photos. We just finished a

winter where hopefully people found an opportunity to have fun outside in South Frontenac, but we know that people have been participating in and attending the great events in the community throughout the year. After the deadline, the Corporate Services Committee, which consists of three township councilors, the township treasurer, and Orr himself will evaluate all the photos. The top three photos will receive a cash prize ($75, $50 and $25) and then they will be used in the banner on the website and in other publications

like the Recreation Guide. Orr has already received a number of submissions and he is hopeful that they will keep rolling in. “The more photos we get, the happier I am. I would love to have 100 photos to choose from and that would really help us build our photo base on the website and really show people what South Frontenac is all about. Photos that are submitted but don’t make the top three will still be used on the website in the photo gallery section and possibly in the Recreation Guide too

and Orr hopes that they will help show non-residents what South Frontenac is all about. “It also gives people a chance to see themselves reflected on the South Frontenac website and it makes them feel like they really are part of the community. It really works to fulfill our motto that our strength is the community. To submit an entry, send it to admin@ southfrontenac.net Include your name and phone number as well as the location of the photo. The winners will be notified by email the week of May 5.

Gazette News — Whenever a public meeting is called concerning the expansion of a pit or quarry, there are always concerns from neighbours regarding noise, dust, sightlines, water tables, etc. For the most part, councilors and staff deal with those concerns either from their own knowledge base or through the help of consultant reports from conservation authorities, health units, hydrologists, engineers and the like. What’s rare is for someone to come up with an objection that leaves the politicians and staff speechless. But that’s just what happened last week at South Frontenac Council’s regular meeting in Sydenham. The subject of the public meeting was an application by Jackson’s Earth Stones Ltd. to redesignate an area of land from Rural to Mineral Aggregate for the purposes of expanding an existing stone quarry that has been in operation on a portion of the land on Petworth Road since the ’70s. Jackson’s quarries limestone at the site that has been used in the construction of things like the monument at Loughborough Memorial Park, Kingston City Hall, the fountain at Market Square in Kingston and Queen’s University. In his report, Planner Lindsay Mills said the application would include a Zoning Bylaw change that would permit the owner to quarry material but would prohibit drilling, blasting and/or processing of the material at the site. Several neighbours spoke about their concerns and/or sent letters to the Township on the matter. Most were like Jim Jacks who said that while the existing operation did create noise and such, he could

ITALY

live with it. He was concerned about expansion ramping up the noise and congestion as well as what it might do to the water table. “There’s no blasting or crushing but it’s not benign and quiet,” he said. “It’s a very big deal. “They say the level of activity is historically low but what about the future.” Representing Jackson’s Earth Stones, Jim Jackson replied that there would be no quarrying in the north end of the property because “there are no stones there.” Others voiced similar concerns including the affects on property values as well as the compatibility of such an operation in what is becoming an increasingly residential neighbourhood. However, things got really interesting when neighbour Rachel Smith-Tryon got up to speak. “I’m confused,” she said. “When we did our severance, we were told the property had to be ‘outside the influence of the pit’ (150 metres) before we could obtain a building permit. “If this expansion goes through, that will put not only our house within that influence but also other family properties within that influence. “Does this mean we won’t be able to get severances for them?” Nobody on Council nor staff had an answer for that one. Mills acknowledged that there seemed to be a double standard at work here and could only say “it’s an interesting question.” Many of the family properties Smith-Tryon referred to are owned by former South Frontenac Coun. Don Smith.

Ready for spring showers?

Non-usage fee/penalty for Sydenham water just isn’t right Craig Bakay Reporter

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette Column — There must be a word for when a municipal council decides it’s going to make people pay for something they don’t want and aren’t using. Bullying comes to mind. Greed is another one and so is unfair. What we’re talking about here is South Frontenac’s insistence that everybody within the boundaries of Sydenham has to pay for water, whether they’re hooked up to the system or not. In a recorded vote of 7-2 (Coun. Al McPhail and Bill Robinson against), Council decided that an additional charge for not hooking up to the municipal water system of $104.57 per month for non-exempt residential unit and $125.09 per month per industrial, commercial, and institutional unit will be the law as of Jan. 1, 2016. This is in addition to the flat rate of $74.57 for non-exempt residential unit and $95.09 for industrial, commercial and institutional units. (Even ‘ex-

empt’ residential units still have to pay a flat fee of $66.37). The non-usage fee isn’t brand new, it’s merely an increase, which as of June 1, 2014 will be $65.23 for residential units and $85.01 for commercial/industrial/institutional units. Way back when the Walkerton scandal unfolded several years ago, the provincial government made a lot of money available for smaller municipalities to create municipal water systems in the name of public safety. The fact that the Walkerton mess came about because of incompetence didn’t seem to enter into it. So the mayor at the time, Phil Leonard, never one to pass up free money from the province, along with Coun. Bill Lake and a few others, decided they’d get in on this and create a municipal water system for Sydenham. The problem was, the system cost a lot more than the province was willing to pony up. It cost residents a bundle just to hook up to the system (in some cases in the order of tens of thousands of dollars). Keep in mind that all of these people already had wells, the vast majority of which appeared to be working fine.

But, it was argued at the time that the potential for disease and all sorts of apocalyptic ills were there and this would prevent that. It was also argued that having a municipal water system would attract all sorts of industry, jobs and tax assessment. Well, it sure attracted the business now didn’t it? You can’t move in Sydenham without running into a new business these days, eh? In fact, it cost the hamlet Steve and Anne’s Pet Store as the cost of hooking up was too much for them to bear. And for the longest time, they couldn’t seem to keep the leaves from the bottom of Sydenham Lake out of the system, adding costs. But be that as it may, the bottom line here is that somehow, the Township of South Frontenac thinks it’s OK to charge people for something they don’t want or need. They may argue that you pay for garbage pickup whether you use it or not or halls or similar things, but that’s part of taxation. This is something different. It’s over and above your taxes. They like to refer to it as a nonusage fee but penalty is more accurate.

8 The Frontenac EMC - Thursday, March 27, 2014

Gazette Editorial – On March 18, the Ontario government modified and increased the fines for distracted driving. Previously, those caught for distracted driving faced a fine of $155 and now that fine has been upped to a minimum of $280. But this fine is just the tip of the iceberg. Judges can now fine offenders between $300 and $1,000 for distracted driving and penalize them with three demerit points, but the question remains, is that enough? For years police officers dealt with street racing and the deadly ramifications that came along with it. For those that enjoyed street racing, no amount of fine seemed to deter them until it became ridiculously expensive. When legislation changed in 2007 and fines for street racing increased to a maximum of $10,000 with added consequences of impound and license suspension, street racing finally saw a decline. Is that what needs to happen with distracted driving? We all know that it is wrong to text or talk on the phone while driving and yet it is hard to drive down a street without seeing someone doing it. But the distracted driving doesn’t stop at cell phone use. According to the Ministry of Transportation distracted driving includes the use of cell phones, laptops and organizers, but it also includes reading maps, grooming activities, eating or drinking and tending to children and pets. While some of these categories may seem to be taking it a bit too far, we need to be reminded that driving is a serious act. Hundreds of accidents happen every day and the majority of them are caused by distracted driving. It is just as easy to lose control of your vehicle when reaching for your coffee as it is while you are trying to text. Both require a momentary eye shift away from the road and while the text may take longer, the distraction still exists in both acts. The major concern now is how will all of this be enforced? It is easy to catch speeders with a radar gun or drunk drivers during a ride check, but how can police catch those who are texting? Devices are small enough now that they fit in the palm of your hand and are therefore easy to conceal and, while they are far more visible in a car at night, offenders are still difficult to spot. Will this lead to more distracted driving amongst police officers trying to catch offenders? Or perhaps a new device will be invented to detect signals and electronic activity in cars? Whatever happens next, one thing is for sure, as long as people continue to allow these distractions to take place fines will continue to increase and accidents will continue to happen.

Casement to debut third In The Guestroom CD with release party Friday night By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — Verona alt rocker Lee Casement has released a third installment of his In The Guestroom series of CDs and everyone is invited to the release party (Friday) March 28 at The Next Church, 89 Colborne St. in Kingston. The live show will start at 7:30 p.m. (the cover charge is ‘pay what you can’) and will include Jonathan Tyrrell of Ketch Harbour Wolves. This incarnation is entitled In The Guestroom Part 3: Redemption In Disguise and although produced with the same formula as In The Guestroom and In The Guestroom Part 2: By Design Or By Desire, Part 3 has a very different feel. “With the second album, I decided

to ask everybody and their dog to be on it, Casement said. “It was fun but it was also a logistical nightmare and that zapped some of the fun. “This time, I wanted to scale it back. On all three albums, Casement has worked with a variety of singers with whom he collaborated on the writing chores. Primarily, Casement wrote the music while the singer provided the lyrics. On the first two CDs, each song featured a variety of musicians but for the third one, Casement limited the instruments to himself, his Ianspotting bandmate Shaun Weima, and Jeff Babcock on drums. “It made things a lot easier, he said. It also provided a cohesiveness that sets this CD apart from the other two. “It’s cohesive even though each

song has a different singer/lyricist, he said. “I don’t write the lyrics but each lyricist asked about themes and we came up with love, redemption, heartbreak and pain. Another common aspect across the CD is the use of minor chords. “The music either moves you or it doesn’t, he said. “The minors just make things more melodic. The CD itself is 11 tunes, including one instrumental. The singer/lyricist collaborators include Bill Cassidy

of Suns of Static, Jamie Young, Grant Bresee, Jon McLurg and Steve Kennedy of Crooked Wood, Josh Peck of Tiger Uppercut, Tom Martinek, Madyson Doseger, Jake Deodato and Sideshow, as well as the aforementioned Weima. The music is a bit difficult to pigeonhole, but there are a lot of effects applied to the guitars, which sound somewhat reminiscent of Yes or King Crimson. But this is a much mellower offering with really only the Sideshow tune, Angels Telling Lies, being a bona

fide rocker. From a personal standpoint, Kennedy’s Cupidity Lucidity stands out as a favourite track. Casement said this will be the last of the In The Guestroom series, which he really only intended to be one CD until he realized how many people wanted to be a part of the project. Winter Tough for Howe Island Ferry Riders By Margaret Knott Correspondent

EMC news- Howe Islanders turned out to hear from Frontenac Islands Township council, Frontenac County representatives, and members of their own Howe Island Ratepayers Association (HIRA), about the island’s ferry system and its future. This winter has been tough on the system and tough for travellers. It has been a winter of heavy winds, extremely cold temperatures, thick ice and a non functional bubbler system, all of which resulted in the Frontenac Howe Island ferry experiencing shutdowns and delays, causing much frustration and concern

for Howe Island residents . HIRA called for the meeting particularly in light of Mayor Denis Doyle’s recent meeting with the Ontario Minister of Transportation, Glen Murray, to talk about island transportation,(Howe and Wolfe) and to present the results of a HIRA transportation survey. There to meet the public from the county: Acting CAO Marian VanBruinessen, Transportation Services Paul Charbonneau; Frontenac Islands Mayor Doyle, Deputy Mayor David Jones, Councillor Natalie Nossal, CAO Darlene Lumley, and HIRA’s Ed Besseau, Brian Humphries, and Jim Mills. Mayor Doyle brought Islanders up to date regarding events that

plan to solve immediate and long term issues facing Howe and Wolfe Islands. The Mayor and CAO Darlene Lumley also met MTO’s Kathy Moore and staff officials about the issues including repairs to the bubbler system. “Technicalities prevent the latter happening immediately but an excavator will remain in place to move ice at Howe Island. A long range plan will follow,” Doyle said. Deputy Mayor Jones said many residents had expressed their appreciation for the great efforts made by the County, the Township and the ferry operators, as well as volunteers “who saw the situation with the ferry as crisis and stepped up to help.” Chief Charbonneau acknowledged and thanked ferry staff for their efforts to keep to keep the Frontenac Howe Island ferry operating. “But lost to Mother Nature.” Explaining the relationship between MTO, the County and the township, he said, ” MTO owns it all., docks, assets, bubble system, and all costs. Local staff monitor the system. We deal with the issues we can; forward those we cannot to MTO They shut down the bubbler system,” he said. “ County responsibilities include staffing the ferry, providing for their health and safety, to collect fees and fares for the township, and look after the safe operation of the vessel “. Charbonneau acknowledged HIRA’s suggestions for more communication with the public regarding the ferry service, alerts, etc., noting twitter and email accounts., ( accessed by 550 residents) where county and township formation

about the ferry system is posted. “Our role is to operate to the best of our ability for staff and residents. We will shut it down if we have to,” he said. Wearing his other hat Chief Charbonneau noted Howe Island has the finest First Response team in Ontario, adding that they and Chief Quinn are working with ‘Ornge’ and OPP Search and Rescue preparing now for what might be a difficult spring breakup. CAO Lumley invited the public to present input and ideas for a contingency plan in the event of an emergency. Jim Mills, following up on the Dec. 2013 Howe Island Ferry Service survey, noted general satisfaction with the county and township ferry services and ‘great’ satisfaction with the staff operators of the vessels. Survey returns represent 120 residents. While certain frustrations with the service still exist, since the last survey in 2007, the ferry now makes 4 trips an hour and the foot ferry now operates all year round. A lively Q&A period followed. Nearly every comment was prefaced with great satisfaction for ferry staff, no matter the statement, question or concern expressed . All were noted and will be considered. by the County. led to the ferry shut down crisis. “ Safety however is always been our main concern and thanks to Chief Quinn and Chief Charbonneau we had contingency plans in place for ambulance service,” he said. “We also have a township emergency plan (recently rehearsed) we were prepared to activate in a moments notice.” The bubbler system that worked originally, failed in the extreme weather conditions that finally led to a shut down of the for a few days. MTO is monitoring the system’s performance, and repairs will be made before next winter and/or alternative technology will be considered.. Early on, Mayor Doyle and Councillor Jones met with MTO officials, and MPP John Gerretsen, about the problems. Later, Doyle, along with Marian VanBruinessen, met with Transportation Minister Glen Murray who wants to see action on the ferry file and a

Dickens beckons filmmaker Columnist

Gazette Lifestyle - His interest in classics sprouted in early childhood. Born in Manchester, England, Anthony D.P. Mann moved to Canada with his family at the age of two. Still, he was raised on British television in Montreal. Recently, my editor and colleague, Hollie Pratt-Campbell, wrote about Mann and the upcoming release of his Phantom of the Opera. Last year, I’d interviewed Mann for a column, From Liesl to Phantom’s Obsession, about Savannah Kimmerer and her role as Christine DaaÊ in the classic film. After reading Hollie’s article, I was again intrigued by Mann’s work and decided to dig into his past. And future. Anthony D.P. Mann grew up watching Victorian dramas and shows like Benny Hill. As a kid, he was reading Sherlock Holmes stories. He staged his first plays in elementary school, including, in Grade 5, his first rendition of Phantom of the Opera. His epiphany came with his introduction to the old Universal Studios horror films. Universal produced these celluloid hits from the early 1920s to 1960. They included such cinematic treasures as The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), The

Phantom of the Opera (1925), Frankenstein and several sequels, The Wolf Man, Dracula and Creature from the Black Lagoon. The movies featured actors like Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Bela Legosi. “Peter Cushing was an early idol, says Mann. “I was listening to Andrew Lloyd Weber and Roger Whitaker. I few to Germany to see him on one of his final tours. Why Roger Whitaker? “He’s a performer who is not just singing a song, he’s telling a story. I admire people who are storytellers. The key to good theatre or film is the ability to tell a story. That’s why Mann has always admired the work of Woody Allen. “He’s a master of the dark thriller, says Mann. “He works with the most limited means and on a small budget and creates quirky films that are character-driven. Mann got involved in the theatre scene and radio in Montreal, especially producing plays. “Radio is theatre of the imagination, says Mann. “You compensate for lack of budget by learning to tell the best story using the most minimal of tools. Radio theatre is the perfect medium. He liked doing live adaptations of mystery plays. “I was always doing one, he says. “We were doing Frankenstein live

one Sunday afternoon. When the show was over, I was told that Al Waxman had been watching from the studio. He had just finished Death of a Salesman at Stratford. We had a wonderful conversation about his own upbringing and radio. He said that in this business you need to have three things: voice, voice and voice. Mann says that in theatre and film, it’s about finding your creative

voice, what he calls “your storytelling voice. “I’ve only discovered my voice in the past few years, he says. “You have to find a way to make the most of what you have. Don’t accept, ‘no.’ Take the initiative. Making a movie is the most wonderful punishment. We have to accept many rejections before we get accepted. We have to be addicted to creative anguish. Finding one’s voice is the only way

to succeed. Everyone has their own style, explains Mann, and you have to devote your life to developing it. “You can have the greatest camera in the world, but if you don’t know how to create something, you aren’t going to succeed. Mann left Montreal and moved to Kingston on a whim in 2001.

Dickens beckons filmmaker Continued from page 11

He became involved with Kingston’s Cogeco studios. “Cogeco has always been my second home,” he says. “Scott (Meyers, of Cogeco) has been so supportive. I got to see what it was like to work behind the scenes and work hands-on with equipment. That’s where I really started to learn the art. The folks at Cogeco are real supporters of community. They’re truly community TV.” Besides Phantom, Mann’s taken on productions like Sherlock Holmes, Dracula and Ghostkeepers. He’s got distribution through Hollywood’s Reality Entertainment. He’s become popular on the convention circuit. In other words, he’s already developed a cult following. He sees hope for independent film producers and says the entire film industry is changing with the Hollywood system taking a blow as a grass roots filmmaking revival takes hold. “You’re going to see an a resurgence in an interest in quality,” he says. “It’s going to be exciting.” “I’m a big fan of Britain’s Hammer Films,” he said. “They’re a small studio working out of a Victorian Era mansion. They’ve shot the majority of films in that mansion and redecorate every room, yet they’ve kept their offices there. They use the same catalogue of actors. There are strong roles for women and supporting characters. It’s a good feeling to know that other people work like this, in the way that I do.” Mann is writing a book called Terror on a Shoe String, about film making. He says that those interested in studying the filmmaking art need to look at early horror works like The Uninvited (1944) and later films like The Changeling (1980). “Some great films have been made on limited

budgets,” says Mann. “It’s so easy to fake something with CGI (computer-generated imagery). But it lacks the honesty of these classic films. The Uninvited is one of the greatest haunted house films ever made. It’s a wonderful essay on atmosphere and presentation.” And there are new challenges ahead for Mann. In the short term, he’d like to do an adaptation of M.R. James’ 1911 Horror Classic story Casting the Runes. “I’m 90 per cent confident that will be the next film,” he says. “I enjoy fantasy and dark films.” But he wants to take on another well-known classic. “A Christmas Carol will be the next big one I really want to do,” he says. “I write a lot of music and I’ve written a musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol.” He’s now working on raising the $15,000 required to take on this project. “We can shoot an incredible film right here in Kingston,” he says. “I’m hoping this time we can get local investors. We’d use about 30 local actors in a community project. With distribution this is the kind of film that would build every year. It’s a beautiful project, a fresh take on the story, but all the heart of the Dickens novel is in there. I’m hoping we can make this an entirely Canadian produced project.” After A Christmas Carol, Mann isn’t sure what’s next. “I have no idea where all of this is going,” he said. “It’s already gone further than I ever thought it would.” Any investors out there looking for a great project, don’t be a Scrooge. Get in touch with Mann. I’d hate to see Tiny Tim die for lack of funding. Mark Bergin on Twitter @markaidanbergin.

Sowing seeds of success: Local farmer honoured with community award Gazette News - Ian Stutt didn’t come from a farming family. He grew up in Montreal and originally moved to Kingston to study global development at Queen’s University. Yet over the past eight years he has made quite the impact on the local farming community, and on March 7 was named Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year by the Frontenac Soil and Crop Improvement Association. The award recognized his leadership in assisting fellow farmers and promoting the local food system, while at the same time balancing a successful business at his own organic vegetable farm, Patchwork Gardens, which he operates year-round with his wife, Megan Joslin, and business partner, Eric Williams. “The main thing [that drew me to farming] was that I could tie a lot of my different interests together in the context of a farm,” Stutt explains. “I was interested in working hard outside with soil and plants and that kind of stuff, but also in community building.” From 2008-2012, Stutt coordinated the NFU’s New Farm Project, which ran programs helping new and established farmers become more sustainable. He has also spoken at a number of events over the years, such as the Eastern Ontario Local Food Conference, which was held in Kingston several months ago. On April 3, he will again be part of a panel at an event hosted by Salt of the Earth Farm entitled “What do you want your local food system to look like?”. “I feel like it’s a two-way thing,” Stutt says of his community work. “I go and I get a lot out of it and hopefully contribute something too. I’m excited to see what’s happening with local food. By going to these things and I hear people’s success stories and their challenges and can really stay current on where things are at and where things are headed.” He adds, however, that it’s certainly not all good news all the time. “I’m hopeful, but with a big dose of concern that the odds are stacked against us. Everything points against small farms succeeding. Through the New Farm Project I witnessed a number of new farmers start and quickly fold because of the financial pressure. Being able to observe some of that made it increasingly clear how important it is to have the knowledge and skill base but also

the access to various supports.” So what does it take to be successful as a farmer? Stutt says that being passionate about the work is a great place to start. You also need the right skill set and personality, as well as the drive to follow through and build something for yourself that’s going to succeed. “When you wake up, you need to be excited to do the work that’s needed that day. And you need to be able to see that it’s not only about producing well, but it’s also being able to market and record keep and adjust. You kind of need all those angles if you’re going to pull it together and succeed, otherwise you’re just going to end up with bins and bins of squash and no market for them and you can’t do that for very long.” Of course, the actual science behind it all matters quite a bit as well. “There are some really wonderful soils in the area, and there’s a really good climate that’s influenced by the lakes,” Stutt explains. “[Through our organic practices at Patchwork Gardens] we’ve done a lot on building soil and crop health to maximize the nutrient value and flavour of our veggies.” All the same, he notes that it was a rather unexpected honour to be named Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year. “It’s encouraging because there’s not really a model set out that we’re supposed follow, we’re kind of creating it ourselves, so to get acknowledged it just feels like we’re on the right track.” Indeed, he adds that the award really belongs to all three members of the Patchwork team. “Megan, Eric and I run Patchwork

as a team, and I am able to focus on building soil health and the community aspects because the others are keeping the market stall and wholesale orders in check.” Ian encourages community members to come out to the Salt of the Earth event on April 3 and be a part of the local food conversation. The event gets underway at 6:30 p.m. in the Wilson Room of the downtown Kingston Frontenac Public Library. “These events are educational and they can be inspiring when you get together as a group and you see this kind of thing happening,” he says. “Just experiencing the energy and enthusiasm that’s there is so motivating.” You can find Patchwork Gardens at the Kingston Public Market starting in May, and online at www. patchworkgardens.ca. Gazette Lifestyle - Topsy Farms on Amherst Island is an amazing place. Beyond their wool products, no one needs an extra reason to visit. But you’ve got one anyway. A very touching reason. One with serious “Awwwh factor. It’s almost shearing time, and that will soon be followed by lambing. “We’re really trying to increase the family ambience, said Sally Bowen. “We’re gearing up to welcome people for shearing sometime around Easter weekend. “Our shearers are going to do about 900 sheep over two days, said Ian Murray. Then, around mid-May the lambs will start arriving. “Last year between mid-May and early June about 1,400 lambs were born, said Murray. You can visit the farm and for a $10 fee have a priceless photo opportunity with the lambs. You can hold a lamb and even hand feed it. Numerous research studies have been conducted on touch. Without it, we shrivel and die, metaphorically; sometimes even literally, as seen in the experience of some eastern European orphanages where babies were deprived of touch. Research into premature babies’ weight gain shows it’s

highly co-related with tactile contact. When preemies are placed on lamb’s wool, they gain weight faster. When we fondly pet a dog, both the dog’s and our own blood pressures drop. So go get some touch therapy with the lambs at Topsy Farms. “It’s a really interactive experience, said Sally. “And it’s not just children who love it. I’ve seen a 70year-old woman experience the same ecstasy that a child does. We’re planning on keeping two or three of the foster lambs around during the summer, so people can still come and see them and hand feed them. It’s easy to get a sense of this farm as a family-friendly place. Three generations currently work the farm. “Our sons learned wool bagging when they were four and six, said Sally. “Now our grandsons are helping. For many years, coyotes created havoc on the farm. But a little over three years ago, the folks at Topsy Farms installed coyote resistant fencing. It’s five feet high, with two more feet of electrical wire. There’s a lot of it: six kilometres. When they first installed the fencing, they weren’t sure how well it would work, but coyotes are a huge problem to sheep farmers, and it was worth trying. Murray explained that coyotes were working more in packs and had become more aggressive. The fencing now sur-

They need dogs that can attach to the sheep more than to people, yet still be able to be handled by people. If you’re interested in watching the sheep shearing, call to find out when it will take place and to book a time to watch. If you’ve never seen shearing, it’s hard to believe your eyes when you see how fast a professional shearer can work. As Topsy Farms becomes more actively involved in agritourism and helping to attract visitors to Amherst Island, they’ve come up with some interesting ideas. Sally and Ian’s son, Jacob Murray, has done some magnificent stone wall building. During lilac season, they’re planning on offering a tour of stone walls on the island in cooperation with The Lodge on Amherst Island. For artists and artisans, there isn’t better wool than what is available at Topsy Farms.

At the farmgate shop, you’ll find almost every imaginable sheep and wool product. You can feel ultra-soft lambskins and sheepskin mitts, slippers and baby boots. These include both medical and shaggy types of skins. Topsy Farms also sells its own wool and over 30 colors of yarn, along with many yarn products, such as blankets and throws. For comfy warmth, the Wool Shed offers pillows, bedding, mattress pads, and comforters that are made from Topsy Farms’ natural wool encased in unbleached cotton. “Very few sheep farmers want to put the effort into marketing wool,” said Murray. “I can appreciate why. We knew it would be uphill work. We’ve been very patient over the years and now we have a lot of wool and sheep products to offer.” Murray has been actively involved on the farm since 1970. His wife, Sally Bowen, came on board in 1977. They married in 1981.

Places to explore and things to experience

Bowen explained that there are many misconceptions about wool, including that it is itchy. “Almost always, people are allergic to the way wool is processed, not to wool itself.” She said that if wool fibre is not processed gently and naturally, the fibre breaks. Little barbs form on the broken fibre. “That’s what people feel as prickly,” said Bowen. “Wool becomes prickly when it’s commercially processed. The fibres split under harsh treatment. It’s the commercial processing and chemicals that cause the itchiness.” Topsy Farms sends their wool to a water-run mill in Prince Edward Island for

processing. “They only use soap, no detergent,” said Bowen. “A lot of natural lanolin is left in. The fibre is left long and silky.” Another misconception is that you can’t wash wool. “Even sheepskin is washable,” said Bowen. “The trick is to just soak the wool and use cold water. Even our mattress pads wash beautifully.” If you want quality local meat, it is available from Topsy Farms or at mainland outlets such as Pig & Olive’s locations in LaSalle Park Plaza at 1689 Bath Road and downtown at 224 Wellington Street. There’s a great blog, and lots of other information, at www.topsyfarms.com. You

Mark Bergin can also find Topsy Farms on Facebook. To get to the farm, take Bath Road west from Kingston. At Millhaven, board the Amherst Island Ferry. It leaves the mainland on the half hour (and leaves Stella on the island on the hour). After getting off the ferry on Amherst Island, turn right at Front Road. Continue on past the “Not a through road” sign until you come to the farm at 14775 Front Road. The cost for a two-way ferry ride to the island is $9. Topsy is a busy working farm, so call first to make sure someone will be on staff at the farmgate Wool Shed. EDUCATION

How can I finance my education? With so many different avenues and opportunities to pursue, a lack of funds shouldn’t be a deterrent for anyone who wants to enroll in college. The Academy of Learning College in Kingston is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to advising students on ways to invest in their education. The college admissions office is a great place to start. Its many services include putting students in touch with various funding agencies, such as financial institutions and the Ontario Student Assistance Program, and helping students create a budget. No stone should be left unturned when it comes to finding the funds to reach your goals. The Academy of Learning suggests asking your employer if sponsorship funding is available. It may also be possible to receive sponsorship from outside agencies and admission office representatives can provide direction for applications.

KFL&A Public Health continues bi-annual fall prevention classes By Mandy Marciniak mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

break a bone and then it is downhill from there. They become immobile and they can’t maintain the level of health that they once had and it becomes really detrimental to their health.” Anything that can be done to prevent falls is extremely important to KFL&A Public Health and these workshops are a big part of the process. The main prevention technique is physical activity and for many elderly people this can be extremely difficult. “There is also the socialization aspect that is important to a lot of older adults who may not have that opportunity,” added O’Grady. “They meet new people and we’ve seen

multiple friendships form over the years. We see people that will go out for coffee after the session and that is really great to see. The program is also great because the participants are getting the tai chi every week and they are really improving their balance and overall health because of that. The program is completely free and it really does help us reduce these risks that older adults face on a daily basis.”

While the upcoming program in Kingston is already full, O’Grady encourages those that are interested to look into joining the Napanee program or to think about joining the fall program that will run in mid to late September. Seminars run on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon and are free to those interested. For more information and to register, call KFL&A Public Health at 613-5491232 or 1-800-267-7875, ext. 1209.

Gazette News – For many people, slipping, tripping or falling down isn’t a major issue, but for older adults, falling can be extremely detrimental to their overall health and wellbeing. In an effort to raise awareness about the risks associated with falls, the Kingston, KFL&A Public Health Group holds a bi-annual workshop series called ‘Stay on Your Feet’. “The program runs for eight weeks and it is designed to prevent falls and promote overall health in older adults,” explained organizer Debbie O’Grady. “It is based on three program components: we have awareness and education, socialization and physical activity.” The series is free to those that are interested and the program runs in both Kingston and Napanee every spring and fall. The program started in 2005 and has seen great success since its inception. The two-hour sessions focus on education in the first hour, with guest speakers who discuss a variety of topics including physical activity, nutrition and healthy eating, medication use and alcohol awareness, foot care, osteoporosis and environmental awareness. Participants then take a break to socialize and enjoy a snack and then it is time for tai chi. “We do a tai chi class, which seems to be the main draw for the program. We have the Taoist Tai Chi Society come in and teach these classes and

we’ve been working with them for a number of years. Research shows that tai chi improves balance and strength so we have been working with tai chi since the inception of our program.” It is estimated that one in three adults over the age of 65 is likely to fall at least once a year, explained O’Grady. Falls account for 85 per cent of all injuries resulting in hospitalization for older adults too, and in many cases falls can result in bone fractures or injuries, chronic pain, loss of independence, and a decreased quality of life. “This is a pretty substantial issue and it is important to raise awareness,” added O’Grady. “Some of these elderly people will fall and

Jealousy ends up tearing apart a precious hand-me-down Mary Cook

Columnist

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Gazetter Lifestyle - Emerson was not happy. The hand-me-down box was wide open in the middle of the kitchen floor, and the entire family sat around it in chairs as we would at a prayer meeting at the Lutheran Church. The call had come that morning: “She’s here...she’s here.” That’s all the station master had to say. We knew the hand-me-down box from Aunt Lizzie in Regina had arrived on the C.P.R. train. Of course, there was no touching it until after supper, the kitchen had been redded up, and our hands washed.

Why we had to wash our hands before we touched a wood crate that come all the way from Regina by train was something I could never understand, but no one got near the box, or the mounds of clothes packed inside until we had thoroughly washed our hands! The reason Emerson was in a state was because a nice store-bought sweater had been claimed by Earl. Alpaca, it was, Mother said. We had to admit it was a fine specimen of a sweater, and it fit Earl to a ‘T’. Earl, being several sizes smaller than Emerson, and weighing about 50 pounds less, was the logical owner of the newly arrived sweater, once worn by a rich cousin in Regina. But Emerson, claimed since he was older, he should have had first pick, and as far as he was concerned the sweater would fit. “It’s supposed to

be tight...that’s the style of it,” he reasoned. Mother would have no part of the argument. The sweater was Earl’s and that was the end of it. Alas, if that were only the case! The entire box was emptied, and as usual, there was nothing in it for my sister Audrey or me...all boys’ clothes. We knew some of Uncle Jack’s suits would eventually be made into skirts or jumpers for us, and the dresses Aunt Lizzie had no more use for, being several sizes too small for Mother, would be turned into blouses. The contents of the entire box had been sorted, pawed over, and put into piles, and the empty box moved out to the summer kitchen, where it would eventually be pulled apart and used for kindling for the Findlay Oval. It looked like Earl was the only one who had anything decent out of the whole box. That is, everything else had to be cut down to size, let out, pressed or passed on to the rummage sale the Salvation Army held once a year in Renfrew. The whole evening was spent pawing over the clothes from Regina, with Emerson still insisting the one prize in the entire box, the Alpaca sweater belonged to him. Earl had rolled it into a ball, and it was under his arm, and as far as he was concerned, he owned it, lock, stock and barrel! Even when we were on our knees around Mother saying our nightly prayers, Earl never let go of the sweater, and we knew he would be wearing it the next day to the Northcote School. Well, at the crack of dawn, which

was when we five children were roused from our warm beds, all heck broke loose! Earl, who only cried if he was physically hurt, was crying like he had lost an arm. Between sobs he was calling Emerson every vile name he could think of. Mother left making the porridge and took the stairs two at a time to settle whatever was causing the uproar. Well, it was plain to see what had happened, and it was going to take a genius to fix it. In fact, not even a genius could repair the damage. How Emerson did what he did without being heard through the night would forever remain a mystery. But somehow he had snuck downstairs to Mother’s sewing basket; gotten her good scissors that no one could touch, and cut out the sleeves of the sweater. And there he stood, fully dressed with a clean plaid shirt and over the top was the now-sleeveless sweater. He ignored the fact that it barely touched his waist. The arms fit, and to Emerson that was all that mattered. Now, Earl was small, but he was powerful when he was in full anger mode, and he attacked Emerson with fists flying. Everyone stood around in the upstairs hall, which was really Audrey’s and my bedroom, too stunned to enter into the battle. Even Mother looked like she had turned to stone. Earl grabbed at the sweater, latching onto a shoulder where it had been relieved of one of its sleeves, and pulled with all his might. And right before our eyes, the piece of yarn he had a firm hold on, reamed off the sweater, falling in a soft mound on the

bedroom floor. Soon there was very little left to that side of the sweater. It was unravelling and if Earl kept at it, soon there would be nothing left but the band on the bottom! Well, there was nothing to do but admit that was the last of the Alpaca sweater. Audrey said she doubted if even the wool could be saved. Mother said she would think of a punishment for Emerson after we had all gone to school, and she could get her wits about her. All the way out the long lane, Emerson walked half a mile behind us, like someone with Leprosy. If there was anything Emerson hated, it was doing house chores. Mother decided every night for a week he would redd up the kitchen, and that meant putting on a long white pinny, washing the dishes, drying them, and putting them into the cupboard. “Girls chores,” he called it. Earl didn’t think the penalty was severe enough, and so all the time Emerson was at his “Girl chores,” Earl sat on the bench behind the table making faces and sneering in Emerson’s direction. Emerson dared not complain, because he knew Mother could easily add another house chore to his punishment...like peeling potatoes or making the toast in the morning. More girl chores! Running low on current Brian Turner

Car Counsellor bjoeturner@hotmail.com

Gazette Lifestyle - “Hi Brian, I find your articles about the car maintenance and repair industry to be very helpful and now I have a problem to ask you about. My 2010 Mazda 5 with 80,000km (bought new in December 2009) is already on its third battery. The first one was changed by the dealer under warranty at 48,000 in January 2012, after only two years, because the cranking capacity at -18ºC was noticeably weak and I lacked confidence that it would start the engine when overnight temperatures went into the -20s. Now two years later (actually December 2013), the same thing happened again: weak at -18 and no confidence that it would start in the -20s. I bought a battery load tester and the

battery tested at the very bottom of the green zone (approx 10.5 volts). Note that the Mazda battery is rated at 570 cold-crank amps. The dealer said that 9.4 volts under load was within ‘specs’ but I knew this would not start the engine when Ottawa’s cold temperatures returned. Now that the car was off warranty I had to buy a battery. I purchased it at Canadian Tire (CTC) and ran my tests on it. (It responded better at 11.8 volts under load). I sometimes take friends to a remote cabin (where I cannot connect the block heater) and I don’t want to risk a no-start with a known-to-be weak battery. My question for you is why is the batteries’ capacity getting low after only two years with my car when my friends’ car batteries are easily lasting six years (as did the batteries on all of my previous cars)? I don’t do short trips and I don’t have add-on electrical accessories. The parasitic draw test results (the amount of electricity the clock, radio and computer memory systems use when the car is turned

off) are within spec. I’ve contacted Mazda Canada’s Customer Relations but they have not been helpful.” FB I asked this reader for some more info and they confirmed the vehicle is usually parked in an unheated garage overnight and the block heater is used on cold nights. Basically a battery has to do two things; store electrical power and deliver it in sufficient amounts on demand. While a lot of technology under the hood of a vehicle has changed over the years, batteries are still pretty much the same as when they were first designed, save for some changes in outer case materials. The cells still have a considerable amount of lead and a very corrosive acid is the medium liquid. I wouldn’t have replaced either the original or the second battery simply for ‘weak cranking’. The test results supplied for the second Mazda battery was well above an acceptable level at

over 10 volts. The CTC replacement was rated at 650 cold crank amps (the amount of power the battery should deliver in its operating temperature range) and thus is more powerful than the original batteries, hence a better test result. Mazda, like most automakers, don’t manufacture their own batteries, but instead purchase them from an outside supplier and then relabel them with their own logos. I’ve never heard of a commonplace problem with their batteries. After a vehicle reaches three years of age its battery should be tested at a minimum on an annual basis and if possible twice a year (early summer and early winter). While inexpensive load testers can provide some information on a battery’s condition, a fully electronic and computerized charge/test station should be used. This equipment will ensure the battery is at a full state of charge before the load test is applied and will limit the load to the battery’s capacity resulting in a very accurate answer. And to the surprise of many drivers,

just as many batteries fail in the heat of summer as do in the cold of winter. For our reader’s concern of parking the vehicle in a remote area with no access to power for the engine heater, I would suggest purchasing a small portable battery booster-pack. These can also be used indoors to power 12 volt lights or radios or even laptops in a power failure or in a remote cabin with no electricity. Gazette News - When Bethany Smith stumbled into her first yoga class during her first year of university, she had no idea the practice would soon turn into a passion that would marry perfectly with her eventual career as a counselor. “I didn’t realize then what a big part of my life yoga would become,” she says. “The benefits extend far beyond increased mobility and strength. As my

Yoga has been such a positive force in my life and I want to share that experience with others.” Smith obtained her yoga teacher certification around the same time she began to pursue a master’s degree in counseling psychology at Queen’s. She later started teaching several yoga classes a week at Studio 330 in downtown Kingston, and increasingly found

that there was a lot in common between her approaches to counseling and yoga instructing. “The way I usually think of my counseling is that it is holistic,” she says. “It doesn’t have to just be emotional and mental problems. It can be if people want to make changes to their physical selves as well. And yoga is very similar in that it’s not just about building strength and flexibility, it’s really about learning mindfulness and it can be very powerful for mental health and spiritual health if people want it to be that way.” This philosophy inspired her to open a new counseling service, Unio Wellness. “Unio” is Latin for union, and references Smith’s holistic approach to health. “I believe that our best selves shine when we focus on the whole person – mind, body and heart,” Smith explains. “I want to engage clients to create feelings of purpose and joy in their lives by addressing emotions and thoughts that are creating barriers to wellness.” By offering counseling and public

speaking services, as well as private and corporate yoga classes, her hope is to make Kingston an all-around happier, healthier community. Indeed, Smith emphasizes that you don’t necessarily need to have a problem to come to counseling – a goal of reinforcing something that’s going well can be equally important. “It can be anyone who is interested in making change. Maybe changing their pattern of thinking or maybe the language that they use to speak to themselves. Or it could be more of a behavioral change - making changes to nutrition or physical activity. It could be learning new regulation skills. It could be getting unstuck with a really challenging decision.” Smith says that helping others thrive and making a difference in her community are things she’s longed to do since the first time she visited a counselor herself years ago. “Through my experiences with a counselor myself, I discovered that

this was the profession for me. I am so grateful for my counselor’s warmth, compassion and confidence in me, and for how they helped me discover the tools within to manage the challenges I was facing.” Through Unio, Smith hopes to pay it forward in her own unique way, and enhance her clients’ awareness of the often unsung power of the mind-body connection. “Things are changing, but there is still a gap between physical and mental health. Things like physical activity and positive eating habits are so important for mental health and likewise, mental and emotional strategies promote physical health. Physical and mental health are so interconnected; I want to offer services that recognize and celebrate a holistic model of well-being.” For more information, visit www. uniowellness.com. Gazette Lifestyle - The vehicles I road-test for these reviews (yes it’s a tough job, but I’m willing to make sacrifices) come from two main sources: press fleets owned by the Canadian head offices of the manufacturers and local dealerships. I prefer to use dealership units whenever possible because they more closely represent the trim and equipment level that you or I shop for, whereas press fleets are made up of fully loaded higher-end models. If you are interested in learning more about any of these vehicles, check out the manufacturers’ websites or better yet, call your local dealership and speak to one of their knowledgeable staff. It’s the ultimate in interactive information gathering. The 2014 GMC Sierra I enjoyed for this review came from the friendly folks at Mike Fair Chevrolet Buick GMC Cadillac in Smiths Falls. Without doubt the single most competitive segment in the North American automotive industry has to be the light pick-up truck segment. Today’s truck shoppers want trucks that look stylish, ride smoothly, get great fuel economy, and have the luxury features of high-end sedans. General Motors revealed their latest generation of the GM Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado earlier this year and media reviews and retail sales numbers are proving that they are hitting the mark. The Sierra 1500 starts at $26,905 and can ride up the price hill to well over $60,000 with various options and power-train packages. My double-cab tester from Mike

tester was rated to tow 9,600 lb. While GM still uses a solid axle/leaf spring set-up for the rear suspension, the ride on rough pot-holed secondary roads was still comfortable and predictable thanks to their variable-rate springs. Inside, the cabin was quiet, well insulated and laid out. Front seat passengers have plenty of room while the rear seats on this double-cab are best left for children or short trips for adults. One of the neat unexpected features on this truck was a remote rear door child-lock switch on the driver’s door control pad. Those looking for more room need only to test out the larger Sierra Crew Cab. For the first time GM is equipping their shorter 4 door double-cab with front-hinged rear doors. This allows the rear doors to open and close independently of the front unlike previous years’ models. The instrument cluster and on-board electronics have been totally redesigned to meet the ever growing demand for industry leading audio, communication, and navigation systems as well as configurable clusters. The Sierra comes with four different tire sizes ranging from 17” to 20”. Unless you’re fond of paying up to $2,000 for a set of rubber, stick with the 17” options. Cargo doesn’t take a back seat to passengers in GM’s world and the Sierra is no exception. The unique built-in foot step-holds in the rear bumper make entry and exit to the truck bed very easy without the need for accessory add-on steps. An available EZ Lift and Lower tailgate uses an integrated torsion bar and damper to ease lifting and lowering. The bed comes standard with moveable tiedowns for securing cargo. If you’re in the market for a new pick-up this year, you need to visit your local GM dealer to try out the new Sierra.

Fair’s with the All-Terrain package came in at $50,380. All prices before destination fees, dealer prep, and taxes and most importantly any current incentives. In this marketplace, automakers are constantly offering very aggressive discounts and package pricing so window sticker prices can often be higher than actual retail figures. GM for example is currently offering up to almost $6,000 in rebates along with $2,000 in loyalty rewards, not to mention 0 per cent finance and lease rates (did I mention that this was a very competitive segment?). Mike Fair’s new vehicle manager Wayne Palmer notes that smart shoppers will always check with their retailer for current pricing. Under the hood three all-new engines are offered for 2014: a 4.3L V6, and a 5.3L or 6.2L V8. Don’t let the displacements that are the same from previous years fool you; these are ground-up all-new designs. My tester came with the 5.3L putting out 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. It was mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. NRCan rates this combo in a 4X4 at 21 mpg city, 31 mpg hwy (13.3 L/100 km, 9.0 L/100 km). The EPA of the US pegs the numbers at 19.2 mpg city, 28.6 mpg hwy (converted to imperial gallons). It’s 98 L fuel tank should deliver a mixed driving range of around 800 km using NRCan’s ratings and will cost about $117 to fill up at $1.30/L. The V8 engine has no shortage of pull and shifts were smooth and quick. All three of the available engines have direct injection, variable valve timing, and active fuel management which can switch to 4-cylinder operation when cruising without drive-train load. A ‘V4’ icon on the instrument cluster lets you know when you’re in fuel sipping mode. V-8 models use new, larger 9.5- and 9.76-inch rear axles with the strength to accommodate the engines’ higher output and the ability to outlast the competition. My
