Gazette News — It was one of ‘those’ agendas at Frontenac County Council last week in Glenburnie. Normally there are very few requests for special day, week or month requests, and very few resolutions aimed at situations outside the County. But last week’s agenda featured no fewer than five proclamations as well as one letter to be sent to Premier Kathleen Wynne on the closure of the University of Guelph’s Kemptville campus and just about all of them spurred debate ranging from what could be categorized as the ridiculous to the sublime. First up was a letter asking the Premier to intervene in the campus closure that drew Coun. John Inglis’ ire. “I’m not going to support this because I just don’t think we have

the authority to ask the Premier to intervene in a university’s decision,” Inglis said. “Yes, the universities are funded (in part) by the Province and I definitely support the Kemptville campus but I don’t think this is right.” His fellow representative from North Frontenac, Warden Bud Clayton, was supportive of Inglis’ stance, albeit somewhat laid back about it. “I think this (proposal to have Wynne intervene) may be a bit ambitious,” Clayton said. However, they seemed to be alone. “I support the local agricultural community and I’m adamant against this closure,” said Coun. Gazette News — A relatively simple bylaw that would make the Frontenac County planners also the planners for North Frontenac Township ignited a bit of a firestorm at last week’s County Council meeting in Glenburnie. North Frontenac becomes the third township to use the County’s planners (Joe Gallivan and Peter Young) instead of an outside consultant. This leaves the largest Township, South Frontenac, who has its own full-time planning staff, as the only township not use the County Services. The carrot used to attract the townships to the County planning fold was lower costs. Frontenac Islands signed on first, followed by Central Frontenac. The usually composed Coun. John McDougall, who represents South Frontenac as its second member of County Council, came out with all guns blazing. “This (planning services arrangement) is ad hoc, unprofessional and has absolutely no value for South Frontenac,” McDougall said. “Adding the name South Frontenac to the language (in a contract between the County and North Frontenac) is a little condescending. “If this situation occurred for any other township, you’d hear the howl all the way to Ompah. “We pay per capita but this contract says no additional costs. “How could there not be? Gary Davison, South’s other representative at County. “We have a staff here (at County) that has time to spend out in the townships,” he said. “His (Gallivan’s) job had a shelf life and now we’re finding something for him to do. “Maybe we (South) should get the $60,000 because we’re paying for something we’re not using. “I know you have the votes but someday, the hammer’s going to swing the other way. “You’re using the services but you can’t go down the road without buying gas.”

County approves plan to apply for community paramedicine funding Reporter

Gazette News — Frontenac County’s Chief Paramedic Paul Charbonneau finally got County Council’s approval to pursue funding from the Provincial Government to study a community paramedicine plan, but it wasn’t exactly an easy

row to hoe. Addressing Council at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie, Charbonneau reiterated his desire to further expand on a pilot project just completed on Wolfe Island, wherein paramedics held six two-hour clinics from May through November. Attendance at the clinics averaged 11 people, many of

whom were repeat visitors. Recently, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care made $6 million available province-wide to expand community paramedicine. Charbonneau is seeking almost $200,000 for his plan, which includes $116,000 for a project developer, $33,000 for project coor-

dination and $29,000 for paramedic training. Although Council eventually approved the application, it wasn’t without some trepidation. Coun. Janet Gutowski, while expressing support for the concept generally, did have some concerns. “If we’re going to expand the community paramedicine program to other areas, we have to ensure there’s fair, equitable and implementation of an adequate level of service with the resources so that it doesn’t end up on the local taxpayers,” she said. Coun. John McDougall said he had been “reluctant to support paramedic initiatives because they didn’t have a connection with other health organizations” but a meeting on the subject changed his mind. “That was one of the best meetings I’ve been to,” he said. “On first read, this seems an extremely complicated issue but now I don’t think it is.” “If nothing else comes out of this, people who haven’t talked before are talking now,” said Charbonneau. “But this won’t be a shotgun approach. “Just because something worked in Renfrew or Australia doesn’t

Council proceeded to then proclaim Lupus Day, Seniors Month, Emergency Preparedness Week, and First Responders Day. But when they got to a proclamation for Paramedic Services Week, Inglis again took exception. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t see the necessity,â&#x20AC;? Inglis said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They do a great job, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re well paid and trained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If we have a proclamation for the paramedics, then we should recognize the staff at Fairmount Home, and everybody else who works here too.â&#x20AC;? Gutowski however liked the idea.

Planned Inverary subdivision still has some kinks to be worked out By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — A plan for a 16-lot subdivision in the hamlet of Inverary sparked some debate at the Public Meeting portion of last week’s regular South Frontenac Council meeting last week in Sydenham. The residential application is a revamped proposal for the property, which came before Council several years ago as a commercial development. “Council will recall that a plan of subdivision for an industrial/ commercial development was proposed in 2008 on this 80acre parcel of land,” said Planner Lindsay Mills. “A public meeting was held (and) the concept received draft plan approval and an approved zoning amendment. “However, the owner ultimately withdrew the application citing the fact that he could not agree to terms with prospective tenants.” Resident Mike Love, whose property abuts on the backyards of three of the proposed new

lots, said he had been fine with the commercial proposal but was concerned about this one. He was supported by two of his neighbours. “I thought it (the commercial development) was a good idea,” Love said. “It would bring jobs to the area. “But now, lots 6, 7 and 8 abut the back of my place and that causes a lot of privacy issues that would affect us big time.” Mayor Gary Davison acknowledged the concerns. “I had lots 6, 7 and 8 in my notes too,” said Davison. “It’s on the radar.” Love also had concerns about water and sewage, as well as a question about how many wells had been drilled there already. “I was told there were seven wells drilled but they only tested five of them,” he said. “Now we’re looking at 16 plus a commercial space (at the opposite end of the development) plus a pile of sewage. “I want to know who’s responsible if my water goes south

Mills had a few of his own, mostly related to a plan to have half of the lots backyards facing Perth Road, a main thoroughfare. Mills showed a slide of a development on Taylor-Kidd Blvd in Kingston as an example of what could happen. “People put their junk in their backyards, pools, sheds, a variety of different fences, and you don’t want that as somebody’s first impression of your town,” Mills said. “And keep in mind you’re going to have that for 100 years.” Mills’ suggestion was to build a service road parallel to Perth Road and have the homes face onto that. “The developer has to build a road anyway but if this doesn’t happen, we do have some other ideas that might soften the effect,” he said.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear editor, Another comment in your “In our opinion” column, April 10 edition once again as most of them are, way out in left field, calculated to be in support of the politically correct agenda. Globaloney is like most other things, all about the money and in this case is a veiled and deceptive attempt to impose more wealth distribution. I have always found it insane that anyone would believe that globaloney is viable. If you will notice, these alarmist snake oil salesmen used the term, originally, “global warming” but as scientific evidence debunked the scam, the term changed overnight to global cooling and then finally climate change. It is beyond me how anyone with any sanity would believe that the two nefarious greenhouse gases, water vapor and carbon dioxide could pose a threat to our survival, but it seems there are enough Al Gores and Suzukis, plus other unmentionable “chicken littles” to make believers out of the shallow thinkers of society. I recall other cultic catastrophe creeps who warned about over population and dangers of DDT who have come and gone, proven over time to have been out to lunch. That vacuum has been filled today with others of their type acting as the useful idiots to enable the thievery of wealth made by nations whose people work to be stolen and given to nations that do not work. I might support a movement against pollution but globaloney is about two harmless gases necessary for actual life. The knee jerk words are, “ greenhouse gas pollution” but how does water and carbon dioxide,

both needed for plant, animal, and human life pose threats? Climate change was born when the Earth was created, and to claim this is a threat is to ignore documented studies such as the Copenhagen Concensus which brings sanity back to the picture in stating things like disease, food shortages, water scarcity, etc are the real problems that need to be addressed. Contrary to the politically correct baloney that there is a scientific concensus about globaloney, the actual science is too juvenile in age for any accurate concensus to exist. As to temperature, it rose 0.8% over the last hundred years and according to experts, natural cycles dominate the impacts of any human activity. The lie about polar ice melting is in fact a heresy, with polar ice fields increasing in the Antarctica since measurements started. The whole debacle is in fact another lie to cover the extortion of more money from the workers and I am proud that Canada has withdrawn from the “Kyoto kookiness” that wastes money and does nothing. With leaders in the globaloney movement like Al Gore, a mere politician, I marvel at the gullibility of the herd who already have ample evidence that politicians lie. David Suzuki is but a geneticist, and his musings on the topic comparative to a grade one student trying to teach university doctoral grade calculus. You have all been had, and the greatest joke is this paper using the recent colder than average winter as proof of globalony. Time for cookies

Now Mayor Gary Davison and Coun. John McDougall, Southâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s representatives on County Council, have been, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say screaming bloody murder at what they see as inequality. intended as a criticism of anybody although there undoubtedly will be those who see it as such. But really, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kind of a commentary on the human condition, and how people often have double standards without even realizing it. The case in point this week revolves around the ongoing kerfuffle at Frontenac County Council over planning departments. North Frontenac, Central Frontenac and Frontenac Islands have opted to use the County Planning services, featuring Joe Gallivan and Peter Young. All three townships claim this will save their taxpayers money. In the long run, that probably remains to be seen but in the short term, that would certainly seem to be the case. However, South Frontenac has long had its own capable planning department (with Planner Lindsay

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say this again, according to the two South Frontenac County Council representatives, one shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to pay for something they canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use. So . . . how come residents in Sydenham who didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hook up to the hamletâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s municipal water system still have to pay? They arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t using it and they sure as hell didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want it in the first place. Again, this isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t to criticize anybody for seeming hypocrisy. Gazette Editorial - Spring brings a lot of wonderful things, including Girl Guide cookies. As temperatures rise, groups of Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides gather in different locations to sell their famous cookies and in most cases theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hard to resist. Most people love these cookies, whether it is the classic chocolate, the vanilla or the chocolate mint, they are really delicious. And, they have quite the history. In 1927, a Girl Guide leader in Regina baked and packaged cookies for her girls to sell as a simple way to raise money for their uniforms and camping equipment. At the time, she had no idea that she was starting a what would become a long-standing yearly tradition. Now, Girl Guide cookies are the official fundraiser for the Girl Guides of Canada and all money raised through sales supports girls and women in various ways. The funds help provide diverse and exciting programs and activities, which allow girls to discover new interests and teach valuable leadership. The funds also help them attend camps and events and they provide training for leaders. The original Girl Guides were founded in England in 1909 after a group of girls wanted to joining the Boy Scouts. Soon after, the first Girl Guides of Canada formed in 1910 and there was a unit in every province by 1912. Today, Girl Guides programs are everywhere and for good reason. They offer girls an opportunity to learn different skills and form new friendships. Nearly seven million girls have joined Girl Guides of Canada in the last 100 years and while their goals and badges may have changed from dressing war wounds to anti-bullying, the message is still the same. Their goal is to prepare women to meet the challenges they will face and deal with them head on. The Girl Guides of Canada promotes strength in women and who can argue with that? So next time you see girls in uniform out selling cookies, think about the excellent programming you can support by purchasing a box. And enjoy some sweet treats in the process.

Gazette Heritage – What started as a small indie record label in Detroit is indirectly helping to promote literacy in the Kingston region. On June 7, the popular local band Heatwave will perform at the Kingston Literacy & Skills fundraiser called Motown Dance Party. In Detroit in 1959, Berry Gordy, Jr. founded Motown, a record company that took the world by storm. Gordy didn’t set out to play an important role in the desegregation movement, but that was out of his hands. Motown led the way in bringing black culture to popular music. The company achieved unheard of success for a small independent record label. Musicians who signed with the company included Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, The Jackson 5, Lionel Richie and Martha and the Vandellas. Last year, a new musical called Motown opened on Broadway. It follows the development of the Motown sound. The show has become a runaway success. You can hear the sounds of the great performers of the Motown era at Zorbas in June, and it’s all for the good cause of supporting Kingston Literacy & Skills.

“Someone told me that Heatwave does fundraisers,” said Cheryl Bird, Marketing Volunteer Development Coordinator for Kingston Skills & Literacy. “So I went to see them and talked to Gord McDiarmid of the band. They agreed to do this for us. If someone likes the music of The Supremes and The Temptations, they’ll love this.” Heatwave only plays for charity organizations and they only do two shows a year, so don’t miss an opportunity to hear them in June. Kingston Literacy & Skills is one of our region’s vital agencies. The organization provides literacy training to adults and families in Eastern Ontario. Illiteracy is a tragedy. It need not exist. Without the ability to communicate in written form, one cannot read a public transit map, a book, a menu, a birth announcement or thousands of other important pieces of communication. Adults and caregivers in a child’s life can model the joys of reading and the wonder, wisdom and pleasure that derive from books. Wise parents spend a great deal of quiet time with their children, reading to them as well as cuddled up side-byside as each reads his or her own book. Dr. Marilyn Adams, a reading and literacy specialist, says that

reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for parents and caregiver to prepare children to learn to read. Before entering elementary school, children learn to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet and phonemes (the sounds in words). Many regular activities like cooking and baking can encourage children to read. Read the recipes and the ingredients in containers to them. Make a bookmark. Give your child a book. Visit Wayfarer Books or other bookshops. They’re magical places. Play a board game. Introduce your child to Scrabble. Go to the library. One of a community’s most important resources is its libraries (and librarians). They make you think, fantasize, and explore inner and outer worlds. But suppose parents were never taught literacy skills or given the gift of reading enjoyment themselves. “We provide two different things,” said Bird. “The first is an opportunity for people who have missed out to come back and learn how to read and write and do math, starting at any level they need to. There is no cost for any of our programs.” Continued on page 14

Joanne Langlois has spent much of her career promoting other artists and causes. She excels at it. Now it’s her turn to be promoted. Always creative, her current project, and destined to be her biggest ever, is Twirl Designs. She first described the concept to me over a year ago. Now it’s taking shape. Although I won’t be surprised when I see her collection in New York or Paris, Joanne wants success to come from within Canada first. Twirl Designs is a venture with integrity and class. Joanne Langlois has established a fashion collection and she isn’t searching Third World countries for cheap labor to produce it. She’s got the quality she wants within our own borders. Something representing Canada should reflect the quality of the culture in as artistic a manner as possible. Art is something I can get behind. Even better is art you can wear. According to international rights organizations, Bangladesh has more than 4000 sweatshops. Hundreds of people have died in them. Fires. Poor working conditions. Industrial accidents. The Guardian (UK) reported that, in a typical incident, dozens of workers jumped to their deaths and more than 100 were injured when a fire swept through a sweatshop that made clothes for The Gap. You won’t have to worry about that with Twirl Designs. This Canadian company won’t be using exploitive settings to cut costs. You’ll have a clear conscience when you

purchase and wear Twirl. “Know that the clothes are comfortable and flattering on most body types,” said Joanne. “These aren’t cookie-cutter fashions that come out of factories. We have to look at the social footprint we leave. We’re creating jobs and promoting art.” She said that when she attended a recent event where her fashion line was on display, people told her she could have the clothes made cheaper if she went offshore. “They’re missing the whole point,” she said. “The purpose is to promote art in an ethical way.” We sat down last week and wound along an interesting path of topics. It was interesting to see how much easier it is for Joanne to promote the creativity of others than it is for her own creations. That’s not a bad thing. There are too many people in the world going, “me, me, me.” Still, when the focus is on her, there’s an awkward sense that she’s squirming to get away from the spotlight. Born in Toronto, Joanne moved to Kingston to attend Queen’s University for a degree in history a couple of decades ago. I asked if she ever sat in her history classes and imagined she’d be launching a clothing line in the future. She burst into laughter. “You’re assuming I went to class,” she said. Thus goes a conversation with her. Behind all seriousness is a playful approach to life. “I realized pretty close to graduating that I was going to be qualified for nothing after my degree, so I went back to school in Toronto for

a post-grad program in public relations at Humber College.” By then, Joanne had fallen in love with Kingston and a man, Paul. With her heart in Kingston she came back to live and put down roots. Joanne and Paul will be celebrating their 23rd anniversary this June. They have two daughters. Those are pretty solid roots. She’s established Twirl Designs. It’s mostly local; it’s all Canadian. “Art has always spoken to me,” she said. “For years, in many ways, I’ve been spoiled by Heather Haynes art. I started to think about her art on fabric. Clothes are something I love. Heather taught me over the years to dream big and to put it out there. There’s something to be said about the way she approaches things. She always said, ‘There’s no reason why this can’t be as big as you want it to be.’ I’ve learned a lot from her about optimism.” Joanne is living her dream of creating a clothing line. She’s put together a talented team. Twirl uses Joanne Langlois recently launched Twirl Designs, a fashion company fabric made in Montreal, which is featuring wearable art. Then Joanne works with fashion design consultant Olivia Coughtrey to get the clothes made. The inaugural collection features the paintings of Heather Haynes. “Heather has been kind enough to trust me with her images to launch the line,” said Joanne. “The whole idea behind this is to support Canadian art.” In the longer term, Joanne’s hopes to see her creations in higher end gift shops across Canada.

All the designs are simple with clean lines. The art is timeless. I love the idea of having three or four of the same kinds of dresses featuring the work of different artists.” Where does she find the

energy for all her projects? “I like to challenge myself and see what I’m capable of,” she said. “As I get older it’s one of those things. I’ve always tried to live by the rule that if I have the thought, I can do it. Like if you have a nice thought, you should say it to someone. I’ve always tried to follow through. I don’t ever want to be in the situation of thinking, ‘what if?’ or ‘if only.’ And in that way, I don’t feel the stress of work. I’m not living with regrets.” She explained that Twirl now involves a team of Kingstonians. “They keep me upright,” she said. “I would like to see a centre in Kingston where the products are made. Know that the clothes are comfortable and flattering on most body types. Twirl is on the higher end of affordable. Maybe someone can’t afford

She explained that the first step is an assessment. If a person has never had a lot of reading experience, they’ll get a one-to-one tutor to work with them. “We also have small group sessions for people who don’t need one-to-one. They work at English reading and writing. We also have math programs. And computers.” She said some people come for specific reasons. “For example, they want to pass their Canadian Citizenship exam,”

said Bird. “They’re matched with a tutor and work on the test questions. We also had one gentleman who came to get help with his truck driving license. He was matched with a tutor and worked on the test. After he passed it, he came back and said now he wanted to learn the rest of the things he need to know to read well.” After the assessment, each person gets their own training plan to follow. “We also offer language instruction for new Canadians,” said Bird.

“They also learn Canadian customs and little things like how to open a bank account. These are all things that allow them to fit into our society.” Kingston Literacy and Skills also offers a family literacy program. “What we’ve found is that if children aren’t taught to love reading at an early age, they are at a disadvantage. We bring parents and children together and provide them with tools to learn to love reading. If a parent isn’t comfortable with reading, children are at a severe

disadvantage.” Families are provided with boxes featuring a theme. “The box includes a book and playful things to do, activities, all themed around the book,” said Bird. When they’ve finished the activities in one box, they return it and can work with a new themed box. “It’s all about gaining a comfort level with reading,” said Bird. Tickets for the Motown Dance Party are $20 in advance, and are available at Kingston Literacy &

• 1/2 cup (125 mL) whiskey or apple juice • 3 Ontario Eggs • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) granulated sugar • 3/4 cup (175 mL) vegetable oil • 2 cups (500 mL) all-purpose flour • 2 tsp (10 mL) each baking soda and cinnamon • 1 tsp (5 mL) nutmeg • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) ground cloves • 1 cup (250 mL) chopped walnuts

Preparation instructions In bowl, toss together apples, raisins and whiskey; set aside to marinate, tossing occasionally. Meantime, in large bowl, beat together eggs, sugar and oil until blended. When the very last ewe delivered, two tiny bodies emerged, but alas, one was as black as ink. Father who prided himself on the white wool he took to market, shook his head, and then said, “don’t think its going to make it anyway...it’s just a little runt of a thing, I doubt if it will see the end of the day. At that very moment I claimed the little black lamb for my very own. I called it Lambie most of the time, but sometimes, called it Blackie. I asked Father if I could look after it, and from then on, the little lamb and I were inseparable. I fed it milk from a little bottle belonging to one of my dolls, and to my utter joy, not only did it survive that day, and the night, but began to show signs of growing into a healthy and sturdy sheep. I was too young to know that you

Gazette Lifestyle – It was a wet and long spring that year. And the winter coldness was yet to fade away to warmer days, leaving a chill in the air that seemed to penetrate our very bones. But it was lambing time, and the joy of welcoming those tiny little bodies of wool out on the farm in Northcote, took away the greyness of the season, and filled my heart with unspeakable joy. Although I never wanted to see the actual births, it wasn’t long after the deliveries that I was in the barn, leaning on the board rail of the lambing pen, watching the mothers nudge their babies and they, with wobbly legs trying, to find firm footing. That year Father was pleased with the number of lambs born in the barn, and with two or three ewes yet to birth, everything pointed to a bit of relief from the cares of the Depression. There would be wool and meat to market,

stayed in the cozy kitchen. It was suppertime and I still hadn’t gone to the barn to check on Lambie, sure that it would be as warm as toast on a mound of hay with all the other sheep. Our supper was ample as usual, and just as I was tucking into my bowl of apple crisp, Emerson, who had been unusually quiet all through the meal, asked me if I enjoyed my meal. This was unusual for Emerson because he was usually only interested in his own stomach. I assured him I did. “Well, you just ate Lambie,” he said. I looked around the table. No one raised their eyes. Mother busied herself at the stove, and Father reached over and patted my hand, and told me again that we couldn’t raise farm animals as pets. Nausea swept over me like a cold wet blanket, and I ran to the privy like someone possessed. My stomach ached from being so sick and I thought I may not survive. Could anyone die from a broken heart, I wondered? The feeling of utter sadness and helplessness stayed with me long after that fateful night had passed. It was the night I vowed never again in my lifetime would I ever eat a mouthful of lamb.

Lambie and I would grow old together. And it grew, and only when I was at school or in the house, or in bed, were we apart. It followed me around the barnyard, and while it was still tiny, I carried it in my arms as if it were a little puppy. And I watched in wonder, as Lambie grew. I even hated to go off to school and leave Lambie behind. My brother Emerson thought it was pure nonsense to have a lamb as a pet. “It’s not a lamb anymore,” he said. “It’s a full grown sheep.” As if that made a whit of difference about how I felt about Lambie. It would always be a baby sheep as far as I was concerned. I remember the day everything changed. It was a cold and wet late spring day. I wondered if summer would ever come. We had to wear our rubber raincoats to the Northcote school, and rubber boots and carry our shoes with our books and lunch. As we neared the house after school, I could see that Mother even had the lamps lit, and for once I didn’t go to the barn but

Enjoying a wonderful new chapter in life Columnist

Gazette Lifestyle – It’s not something I had thought about a great deal and it isn’t something I worried about either. Now that it has happened I can’t believe how excited I am. My life has moved in a new direction. I’m a grandfather and I can hardly believe my good fortune! I have a wonderful wife and children. Our extended family is so good. I am very lucky! But when I met my granddaughter for the first time I was rendered speechless. And anyone who knows me will tell you that is definitely out of character. Her name is Lily and she is gorgeous! I know, I know – all grandparents say the same thing. But this little eight-pound bundle of joy (Lily weighed seven pounds, seven ounces at birth on March 19) has pushed a button I didn’t know I had. I’ve fallen head over heels for her. These days I find I’m checking my email much more often than usual. I’m hoping more photos of our little doll have arrived. Thank goodness for Skype! Lily is the child of our daughter Heather and her partner Indy. He is an engineer who works for an Ottawa-based firm in Saskatchewan. The distance is a small challenge but getting to the Canadian Prairies by air is easy. Less than a week after Lily’s birth Kathleen and I arrived in chilly, but relatively snow-free Regina, where we spent most of a week with the new arrival and her parents. I’ve told my family and close friends this. Now I am opening my heart to the

readers of this newspaper. When I first held Lily I knew my life – our lives – had changed forever. In the most wonderful way imaginable! Every night little Lily made her presence known in the only way infants can. She cried – a lot! As you know that is a baby’s means of communication. When they are hungry they cry. When their diaper needs changing they cry. Sometimes they cry for no apparent reason. Well, some people might not warm to the possibility of being sleepless in Regina. In truth some people might not want to go to Regina in the first place. Lily’s crying was music to my ears. No pillow over the head for this new “Grandpa”! I soaked in every minute of it. Because I know from experience that it won’t last long. Having an infant in the family is something to be treasured – savoured in fact. Oh yes, about Regina! The city clearly gets a bum rap from some people. It’s a very nice place and I mean that sincerely. We like it there. Now that our granddaughter was born and lives in the city, Regina and Saskatchewan will always be special to us. It will also be a frequent destination for Kathy and me as long as our daughter and her family live there. I am certainly not going to go over the top in this column. But perhaps my thoughts on the subject of parenting and now “grandparenting” (yes that is a real term) will resonate with some of you. Field of study By the way there are countless books

on the subject of parenting for anyone who is interested. Heather has purchased a few and I spent a couple of evenings delving into the subject once again. No matter how old our two children get I am still a parent and new books offer fresh ideas. I suspect there are fewer books on the subject of grandparenting? Checking online I found one on Amazon that looks interesting. It’s called ‘Grandparenting for Dummies.’ The title alone means I will have to check it out. During Heather’s pregnancy a good friend of ours said, “Being a grandparent is like riding a bicycle. You never forget how to be a parent!” It’s true. The basic principles are the same. However, several friends and acquaintances also offered this rather interesting thought in the days leading up to Lily’s birth. “Being a grandparent is much easier

than being a parent,” they suggest. “That’s because you can always give them back and go home!” I found that approach worked very well when we were in Regina. When Lily cried and particularly when a rather unpleasant aroma emanated from my little granddaughter’s person we (both Kathy and myself) quite gladly handed her to Heather or Indy. “Your problem – we’re just the grandparents,” we told them. Age helps I think. Heather and Indy are in their 30s and have plenty of life experience behind them. They know other couples who have started families and they have observed what it takes to manage infants day to day. Also, in our modern world there are so many new and wonderful tools to aid firsttime parents. Everything from disposable diapers to well-designed bassinets and carriages. That’s not to mention all of the tools

available to help entertain children as they grow. Infant apparel has also developed to a much higher level. As I write this, I can’t help but think back to when Kathy and I were first married. We were just kids ourselves, in our late teens. When our first child, son Craig, was born in St. Thomas, Ont., three years later (I was a reporter at the daily newspaper there) we were still young and inexperienced in so many ways. Everything was different then. The prenatal situation was lower impact. So too

was the birthing experience. Once a baby was born he/she was kept in one large nursery and brought to their mothers and fathers. Much more regimented, far more conservative! Today mother, father and baby can all stay in the same room in most cases. It is a more hands on experience for the parents; a far more intimate and user-friendly environment for a new family. When Kathy and Craig were released from the hospital way back in 1975 we were so green. Where to start? It can be quite an intimidating experience for novices. If Kathy’s parents hadn’t lived Return
