Rainy June brought most area lake levels up but there are exceptions By Craig Bakay Reporter

Sydenham celebrates Canada Day Communities, large and small, from coast to coast celebrated Canada Day on July 1. Sydenham was no exception, with hundreds enjoying the festivities which culminated with a spectacular fireworks display at The Point. Photo/Rob Mooy

News — When it comes to lake levels, a lot of it depends on where you are at a given time — like when it’s raining. It has been a rather wet June this year. Environment Canada reports (the Kemptville climate station, the closest to our area) that there were 141 millimetres of rain and a mean temperature of 16.9 degrees. Compare that to the historical average of 93.9 millimetres and 20.5 degrees. The temperature is important for lake levels because the higher the temperature, the more evaporation there is. Gord Mountenay, water management supervisor for the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVC), said that “we have had a lot of rain, particularly in the upper Mazinaw area and generally speaking, lake levels have returned to what we consider normal. “Crotch Lake is full.” He said that Mazinaw, Shabomeka and Kashwakamak lakes in particular were “hit hard with rainfall and we had to pull some logs (from the regulatory dams) because we had somewhat flood conditions for about a week.” However, not all the lakes in that area are up and that’s where things get interesting. Mississaganon, the lake just north of Kashwakamak, and Big Gull, just south, are both

down about 4 inches each. “We had the dams shut off on Mississaganon and Big Gull,” he said. “There’s virtually no water going out of them. “Even though we didn’t have the heat and evaporation, I don’t see either Mississaganon or Big Gull filling up soon unless they get the rain.” It all depends on how much rain we get and where it falls, he said. “It’s been an interesting summer so far,” he said. “The experts we talked to said it was going to be the hottest June in a long time. “I think they might have been a little bit off.” But, he said, if Mississaganon and Big Gull Lakes had had the rainfall the upper Mississippi Valley got, they’d be at ‘normal’ levels too. But all that rain did bring lake levels up on many lakes. Sharbot Lake, for example, is about 4 inches higher than ‘normal.’ But, Mountenay cautions folks to take the Sharbot Lake levels “with a grain of salt.” He said unlike Mazinaw, which has been monitored since the 1960s, there are only about 10 years of data for Sharbot Lake. “Ten years is not a lot of data,” he said. “Some of the old timers who’ve lived on the lake might remember very different levels depending on what they use as a frame of reference to measure it, such as their dock or shoreline. “I’m sure levels were much different in the ’60s and ’70s.”

It’s not loneliness that keeps long-distance runners running Reporter

News — Why do you run? Ask a long-distance runner that question and there’s a better than average chance you’ll just get a blank stare. Even when they think about it, it’s often like they’ve never really pondered the question. Take 75-year-old Sean Sheehan for example. This year, he’s run 16 5K races in Florida (13 firsts, three seconds and a third). He says he doesn’t train, because the bakery in Plevna keeps him too busy. Nevertheless, he was in the lineup when the horn sounded for the Canada Day Run in Sharbot Lake last week. “I do it to support local charities,” he said. “And I like supporting this one. “I like the way the money is distributed.” (Proceeds from the Canada Day Run go towards purchase of adult outdoor fitness equipment to be placed along the K & P Trail in Sharbot Lake.) When pressed further, he’ll tell you he started running as a kid while working in copper mines, adding, “it keeps me fit.” His son, Kevin, and grandson, Liam, also came down from Ottawa to run in the 5K. “It’s amazing him running at his age,” Kevin said. “My sport is soccer but this (running) is good support for that and it’s a

nice experience.” “He wants to challenge me,” said Sean, who beat both son and grandson. Liam, on the other hand, has a slightly different take. “(Running) is one of my favourite sports,” he said. Everyone got medals for this run, but that’s not why they do it either. “It’s fun, I like to race,” said 10-year-old Cadell Wyncoll, who won the 2K race. “I like getting exercise,” said her sister, six-year-old Siena, who came sixth. “Nobody in their right mind would run,” said Jeff Green, whose major motivation for winning the 10k race was that his archnemesis, Rudy Hollywood, was relegated to the 2k walk because of an injury. “Why do I run?” said Green. “I don’t know any better. “My car got towed. “There’s no good reason.” And speaking of Hollywood, who along with his wife Joan is well known for running, triathlon and being the major force behind the fundraising efforts for the acquisition of adult fitness equipment - he didn’t really have an answer, but he will admit to being a fitness advocate. “It’s a long story,” he said. “There’s nothing better than leading by example. “You expose your children to as many

sports as possible and let nature take its course.” He really didn’t start running until Joan’s father, Bob Murray, died of cancer and they got involved in the Terry Fox Run. His kids joined the track club and eventually that evolved into Kid of Steel Triathlon and organizing all sorts of events. “I’d run in the dark until I got into shape,” he said. “Everybody has different reasons for running. “But when you get older, you have only two reasons: either you don’t like the way you look in the mirror or your doctor says you have to. “There are so many health benefits.” There were 56 participants in this year’s run, which included a 2k walk, Cadell Wyncoll, 10, came first in the 2K run and a 2k run, a 5k run and a 10k run. sister Sienna came sixth. performance on Saturday night. “We’ll miss the Irish humour though,” said Vezeau. When asked who he’s personally looking forward to seeing this year, Vezeau quickly answers “John Ainsworth. “He’s (Ainsworth) a Nick Drake/Syd Barrett cross,” said Vezeau. “For those who appreciate those two names, you’ll be quite surprised. “He has several YouTube videos.” Vezeau is also looking forward to perennial festival favourite Ed Gerhard (“what a player”), Austrian Thomas Leeb (“some interesting takes”) and the band 2ish, featuring one of Don Ross’s former students (“they have sounds to enthrall”). 2ish features Saskia Tomkins on nyckelharpa, viola and violin and Brandon Scott Besharah on fingerstyle guitar. On Saturday, Matt Woodward is scheduled for a guitar workshop (previous Woodward ‘shops’ have

been quite informative), an ‘In the Round’ sponsored by Stonebridge Guitars and an open mike which the website canadianguitarfestival. com promises will feature an ‘appearance’ by Vezeau himself. On Sunday, the annual competition is back with 25 competitors from around the world. It’ll feature prominently in a documentary from an Australian film team called Fingerstyle — The Movie. “Some guys are a bundle of nerves before the competition,” Vezeau said. “Over the years, I’ve seen a few of ’em puke.” After the competition, there will be the annual lobster supper and then at 3 p.m. a closer who is “as yet undetermined,” Vezeau said. “The universe is a rather large piece of kit and I’m on a needto-know basis.” For more information, visit the website or call 613544-CAMP (2267). There are plenty of campsites as well as spaces for trailers, etc. available.

Frontenac County needs volunteers and vendors for 150th Anniversary Celebrations Reporter

R0013362837_0709

News — Preparations for Frontenac County’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations Aug. 28- 30 in Harrowsmith’s Centennial Park are going well but they could still use a few more volunteers and vendors, says Alison Vandervelde, the County’s communications officer. “As for vendors, we’re looking for anything and everything,” she said. “That could mean anything from businesses that make things and sells them for profit to things like 4H clubs and/or any other community organizations and groups. “Local businesses and groups would be great but we do have some space available for vendors from outside the County.” As to volunteers, she said local service clubs are “taking care of the big things like parking etc, but we sure could use some ‘floaters,’ people to do customer service type volunteer work. Anyone interested can contact Vandervelde at the County (avandervelde@frontenaccounty.ca or 6130548-9400, extension 305) Pam

Morey at moreyp@kos.net or Dan Bell at bellwindowsiding@gmail.com. “I encourage all residents of the County, and our neighbouring municipalities, to bring their family and friends to this once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Warden Denis Doyle. “This will be a wonderful time to celebrate our past, present and bright future and for visitors to discover our region. “I hope you will join us, starting the week on Wolfe Island at the Canadian Plowing Championships, and capping off your summer at Frontenac County’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations.” Vandervelde said Friday night festivities include opening ceremonies, midway rides, family activities, live entertainment, a beer tent, family movie, fireworks and something called IceStock Curling, an Austrian/German invention like curling only without ice. On Saturday, there’s a parade, the Frontenac County Plowing Match, bingo, a host of family activities, heritage and antique displays, a variety of food/beverage options and a Heritage Costume Ball at the Golden Links Hall in Harrowsmith where you can get your picture taken with Sir John A. Macdonald.

After a Sunday morning brunch, there will be a huge historical reenactment, live entertainment and closing ceremonies. A full schedule is available at www. frontenaccounty.ca/150. And it would appear that the County’s history is becoming more and more popular as time goes on. The Doors Open event June 13 drew 448 visitors to various locations across Frontenac

County. Some, like the Old House Museum on Wolfe Island, reported that they drew what they would normally draw on this date, or 30 visitors. However, others, like Railway Heritage Park (The Caboose) in Sharbot Lake reported a whopping 75 visitors. Other venues in the area reported good turnouts such as 40 at the K & P Trail in Harrowsmtih, 50 at St. Paul’s United

Church in Harrowsmith, 23 and 21 at the Sydenham Library and South Frontenac Township Council chambers respectively, 33 at the Princess Anne Building in Hartington, 19 at Bedford Hall in Godfrey, 20 at the Bradshaw School House in Bradshaw, 32 at the Kennebec Community Hall in Arden and 29 at the Cloyne Pioneer Museum and Archives.

Column — Know what’s a real shame? It’s a shame that an entire generation will grow up thinking that six movies are what Middle Earth is all about. J. R. R. Tolkien wrote four books, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings — (He wrote several others too but Farmer Giles of Ham is hardly great literature) — that literally created a new realm of storytelling. One interesting aspect of LOTR/H is that Tolkien managed to create an entire world that seems just so . . . believable. It’s incredibly easy to lose yourself in Middle Earth, as many exhippies will attest. Before Middle Earth, there were a few other alternate worlds floating around. But Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom, Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland and C. S. Lewis’s Narnia, while fascinating, don’t seem to consume a reader’s imagination the way Middle Earth does. So what is it that makes Middle Earth so compelling?

It might be argued that the way Tolkien tells the story has a lot to do with it. First of all, if you take a modern course on writing fiction, chances are you’ll end up believing that the majority of what Tolkien did was wrong. Many successful novels have been cranked out using the Marshall Plan and in fact there is merit in the analysis of successful novels and creating a formula from common elements. But, we always have to come back to the 150 million copies of LOTR printed . . . and LOTR doesn’t fit most ‘formulas’ for successful writing. Perhaps the greatest example of this is the part of LOTR where the hobbits meet Tom Bombadil. The movies (both Peter Jackson’s trilogy version and Ralph Bakshi’s animated version) ignore Bombadil completely. And, according to many writing formulas, this is exactly the right thing to do. As the advice goes, chop anything that doesn’t directly move the story along. Similarly, the ending of Jackson’s film version kills off Saruman prematurely and completely leaves out the hobbits’ return to The Shire. Presumably, Jackson’s ending was more palatable to those in control of

the movie industry who seem to really like formula writing. Now this isn’t to say that the movies totally suck. On the contrary, they’re quite entertaining on a superficial level. But they aren’t as compelling as the books. And we won’t even mention all the crap added to The Hobbit to stretch it out to three movies to maximize profits under some corporate comptroller ‘formula.’ (Who the hell came up with that ridiculous elf-dwarf unfulfilled love story anyways?) Looking back at the novels, it seems there is a place for ‘episodes’ that seemingly don’t move the story along. When the hobbits succumb to Old Man Willow and are rescued by Bombadil, we not only get a sense of the age of magic and its importance to this world, but also it’s a transitional stage for the hobbits, a kind of loss of innocence. Similarly, when they return to The Shire, they are fully grown, fully capable and they’ve certainly come of age — all in a world that somebody just made up. But your kids won’t know this if they’ve only seen the movies. Say, here’s an idea — this summer, read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to your kids.

“Un”Fair Elections Act gets its day in court Last week, two different advocacy groups sought an injunction in the Ontario Superior Court against certain provisions of the Fair Elections Act, passed by parliament last fall. Specifically, they wanted provisions disallowing voters to use their voter information card as proof of identification to vote expunged, as well as some of the new provisions forcing voters to produce certain forms of government issued identification. A decision should be handed down on July 20. We sincerely hope that they are successful in their appeals, for we believe this is truly one of the most odious pieces legislation to be passed into law by this government. Statistics shows that around 15 per cent of people don’t have driver’s licenses, and that goes up past 20 per cent for voters aged 25 and younger. The new legislation will also make if much harder for people who move close to an election, as they may not be able to procure identity with both their picture and name on it. The practice of vouching for a fellow voter will also become much more difficult, as the new legislation requires the person vouching to be from their exact polling district. In fact, one elections expert, former B.C. chief electoral officer Harry Neufeld, has estimated that the legislation could disenfranchise as many as 250,000. Proponents of the Fair Elections Act legislation often cite rampant voter fraud as the prime reason for enforcing these added administrative burdens. But just how rampant is it? Neufeld wrote a report for Elections Canada which found no evidence that there have been more than a handful of cases of deliberate voter fraud in either federal of provincial elections - perhaps even fewer than one instance per election. It is for these reasons that we hope the groups get their injunction. Voter ID laws are a blight upon every jurisdiction that enforces them, for they disenfranchise those whose voices are already not being adequately represented: youth, seniors, Indigenous people, new Canadians, the homeless, and people with disabilities.

encouraged to have fun, savour the moment, and do something unique if the moment felt right, so I danced for the first few metres. It felt amazing. When I’d had enough of hamming it up, I started running. I wish I’d run more slowly, because 200 metres really isn’t that far. I blinked and it was over. I helped light Al Cantlay’s torch, turned around, and someone was there waiting to take the torch from my hands. (No, I didn’t pay the $500 to buy it.) Now that it’s over, I can say with confidence that the torch relay will be a major highlight of 2015 for me. I’m proud of getting through it without tripping or setting myself or something else on fire. (I was quite literally concerned something like this would happen.) More than that, though, it was exhilarating to be a part of something so huge. I had a Kingston Heritage/Frontenac Gazette editor Hollie Photo/Rob Mooy lot of fun, made some new friends and have Pratt-Campbell. some snazzy new torch relay-themed running shorts to show for it. R0013362845/0709

I was initially a little nervous at the idea of being a torchbearer for Kingston in the Pan Am Games Torch Relay. I’m not much of an athlete, and most of the other torchbearers I’d met or heard about were accomplished athletes and/or had done something significant in their community to earn this honour. For me, the opportunity came up in a less glamorous way. I work for Metroland, which is the official print and online media supplier for the Pan Am Games; they needed someone to represent; etc. I pictured everyone being all ‘what’s SHE doing there? Who does she think she is??’ In the weeks leading up to the Kingston relay, I followed the torch’s progression through other cities and gradually became less nervous. A few of the torchbearers were famous, but most were just everyday people. Plus, there were 3,000 of us in total, including 11 right here in Kingston. It was unlikely anyone would think twice about me doing this, let alone care enough to question whether I was deserving of the honour. So by the time I went to meet the relay convoy at Fort Henry late in the afternoon on July 2, the butterflies in my stomach were more excited than nervous. The excitement grew after I changed into my white and orange uniform and began chatting with my fellow torchbearers. There were a few particularly ‘notable’ people – like rower Rob

Gibson, who was leaving in a few days to compete in the Pan Am Games himself, and Michele Kehoe, who was chosen by the community in recognition of the physical activity and healthy living programs she runs for aboriginal youth – but most were regular folks like me who were lucky enough to stumble upon this incredible opportunity. We all piled into a bus that took us downtown and were dropped off at our respective stations a few minutes ahead of the torch’s arrival. My parents, daughter and grandma were all there to watch, as was my dear friend Julie and her children, who made a special sign in my honour. My husband Steve was notably absent. “He thought he left the oven on and went home to check,” my mom informed me. Classic Steve. I was sad he would miss it, but my attention was quickly captured by the fast approaching convoy, complete with a media van pumping upbeat popular music. ‘Sugar’ by Maroon 5 was playing and all I wanted to do was dance. Prior to the relay, we’d been

six years ago and it left him paralyzed on the right side. “It was pretty devastating,” she said. “While he was in the hospital I saw a poster about a stroke conference I attended and then I found out about the support group. It has been invaluable.” Kelsey’s husband is in a long-term care facility so she is not the primary care giver for him, but she is still very involved in his care. The support group makes her feel less alone and also gives her hope for the future. “I’ve gained a lot in terms of companionship and support through the group sessions,” said Kelsey. “It also gives me a lot of hope hearing other people’s stories. They know how hard it can be and people who have been through it are sometimes more helpful than family and friends who have not.” Overall, the goal of the groups is to provide support and share experiences. Pratt hopes that the groups are fulfilling for patients, spouses and caregivers and she hopes others will see the value in them too. “We want more people to seek out this support. Once a patient leaves the hospital there isn’t much support, but these groups can help a lot.” VON also runs a peer visiting group for stroke survivors and they are launching a new exercise program for survivors this fall. Fairmount Home awarded Exemplary Standing By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

News – Staff and residents at Fairmount Home are seeing their hard work pay off; the longterm care facility was recently

awarded Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada, the highest standing for a facility of their kind. “We were just delighted that we did so well,” said Emily Shoniker, director of care. “The assessment

happened back in January of this year; we were originally rewarded the level down from exemplary, but we worked hard and we got bumped up to the highest level last week.” Out of 504 criteria, the home

missed only one, and staff have worked hard over the last few months to improve its standing to exemplary. “We had to change the way in which we disposed of bio-hazard materials,” explained Shoniker.

“The exemplary standing requires whoever is disposing of that material to wear a gown. Ihat is a small thing that we were able to make happen.” Continued on page 14

Fairmount Home awarded Exemplary Standing and people coming in that we can meet high standards and that we are a quality service provider in the area,” she said. “In the world of healthcare it is really important to strive to do better and provide excellent quality service and that is what this shows.” Shoniker and the staff at Fairmount Home attribute much of their success to their approach to care; the home and the staff

Continued from page 13

The accreditation process is completely voluntary for facilities like Fairmount Home and only 67 long-term care facilities in Canada are actually accredited. The assessment occurs once every three years and Shoniker sees it as an opportunity to let the community know how great Fairmount is. “We want to show the community

practice a Gentlecare philosophy. “It is really a resident-focused level of care and we try to allow the residents to make as many decisions as possible when it comes to their individual care,” explained Steve Silver, interim administrator. “We want them to feel like they have some input in terms of timing and get them involved in their own care. I think that has a really positive effect on

the facility as a whole.” Silver said Fairmount Home strives to be the long-term care home of choice in the area. “We have a long waiting list already, but these enhancements also ensure our competiveness and progressiveness in long-term care,” he said. “We want to do better than the standard and we want to improve as much as we can on a day-to-day and year-to-

year basis.” All that is left to do now is maintain the level of care that earned them this accreditation – and of course celebrate. “We will have a little celebration with staff and the residents. It really was a team effort and we have great staff and management and I think this result really shows that,” said Shoniker. “We are very proud.”

The weighed rates of non-household garbage can be found on the reverse of your new Recycle calendar, our website and at the gate. Pan Am Games Torch Relay Kingstonians lined the streets of downtown Kingston to cheer on 11 local residents who carried the Pan Am Games torch into Kingston on July 2. [Above] Hollie Pratt-Campbell passes the flame to Al Cantley. Photo/Rob Mooy

The Open House will be held on Monday, July 13, 2015 at 7:00 p.m., at the Municipal Council Chambers at 4432 George Street, Sydenham, Ontario. A copy of the draft revised Plan and attached schedules are also available for viewing on the Township’s website at Open for Business/Planning and Development/Official Plan. Additional information about the revised Official Plan is available at the municipal office during regular office hours (8:00 a.m. – 4:30 pm Monday to Friday).

PLANNING DEPARTMENT NOTICE Please be advised that anyone wishing to meet with the Township Planner should make an appointment beforehand. By making an appointment, the Planning Department can be prepared for the meeting and have an adequate response ready for the meeting – this will streamline the process for moving any development approvals forward. Appointments can be made with either Lindsay Mills (the Planner) at Ext 2221 or Jenny Kapusta (Planning Assistant) at Ext 2224.

RECYCLING REMINDER Just a reminder that our Blue Box program is for household items only. Plastic items must have the recycling symbol on the bottom of 1, 2, 4, 5 or 6. There are a few exceptions such as clean plant pots, cells and trays. As well, please do not put excess plastic items in plastic bags, it is hard to differentiate between that and your garbage, also the workers then have no place to deposit the bag. If your recycle box is overflowing week after week, then why not drop by Keeley Road office and purchase an additional box for only $6.00.

SWIM AND DAY CAMP REGISTRATION DATES For information on session dates, class times, contact Jenna at 613-376-3027 Ext 2231 or email at campcoordinator@southfrontenac. net. See our website at Things To Do/Recreation Activities/Swim and Day Camps.
