EMC News – Albeit somewhat reluctantly, Frontenac County Council passed a resolution at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie to fund a $25,000 study to address an age-old problem that’s plagued township fire departments since before amalgamation — communications. The study, which will be conducted by an independent firm subject to a request for proposal (RFP) to be hammered out between the four township fire chiefs and public works managers, came at the request of all four townships, each of which passed resolutions asking the county for funding. Those resolutions came at the urging of South Frontenac Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough, who met with his counterparts to determine an appropriate course of action to address the problem. “Our current system is not adequate or sustainable,” Chesebrough told county council. “We’re hopeful our study will show how we can be compatible with the City of Kingston’s communications. “(But) our study will also roll into emergency management, not just fire and public works.” Kingston is currently in the process of looking at its communications system, he said. If their study leads to a new system, the problem could get even worse. “The new city system, according to their RFP, will not be compatible with EMC Events – Bronwin Edmison shows off her catch as families from all over the area descended ours,” Chesebrough, who on McMullen Beach last weekend for the annual Verona Family Fishing Day. dispatch but not vehicle to vehicle.” Warden Janet Gutowski observed that the county is in a unique situation because it operates the ambulance system, which operates in both the county and the City of Kingston. She asked Director of Emergency Services/ Paramedics Chief Paul Charbonneau for his input. “I welcome Chief Chesebrough’s comments on emergency management,” said Charbonneau. “Even though the federal government has allocated 10 mHz of bandwith, interoperability is a problem for our chiefs and the fire chiefs. “I can talk to the OPP (over radio) but not the firefighters.” Coun. John Inglis expressed some concern that “the county will be responsible for funding the study but there will be no input from council or staff.” Chesebrough responded that because of the varied geography of Frontenac County, each fire chief and public works manager will have unique concerns, and the study would attempt to address those unique concerns. Coun. David Jones urged Chesebrough to include provisions to include the city’s plan. “Is there any guarantee that somebody won’t be back in six months saying ‘we need something that’s compatible with the city?’” he asked. CAO/Clerk Liz Savill said that in the past, joint projects between the county and its townships have worked out well and “the Chief (Chesebrough) and I had a good conversation on this project.” Chesebrough said the study will take about three months.

Absenteeism “not politically expedient to discuss EMC News – A report for the City of Kingston on the ambulance system its shares with Frontenac County prompted Coun. David Jones to wonder why costs associated with employee sick
time were not included. The report, compiled by Chief Paramedic Paul Charbonneau, was requested by the City in response to the decision to cut an ambulance and the equivalent of two full-time positions at the Palace Road Station, which is located in the city. Kingston pays its
fair share of the ambulance/paramedic service, but under the 1999 round of amalgamation agreements the County administers the service. “I’m not often at a loss for words, Jones said. “But isn’t anybody else struggling with this around this table? “Why don’t we step up and set our own goals for absenteeism? “My observation is that it’s not politically expedient to discuss it, said Coun. John Inglis. “It apparently makes it more difficult to negotiate with unions. Charbonneau’s decision to cut the ambulance and some paramedic time at the station came after an anticipated 7.1 per cent increase in his budget for 2013. Gary Davison gets the quote of the month for this observation. After questioning the need for elevator repairs at Fairmount Home with a remembrance that there was a similar request during his term as warden two years ago, Davison was told that this was a different elevator. “Our elevators are crap,â€? Davison responded. Warden Janet Gutowski tried to equal Davison’s eloquence but came up just a bit short with her observance: “We did some cost comparisons and it seems operating costs are significantly lower in facilities

In the staff report on the purchase, Paramedic Chief Paul Charbonneau said the costs are within the 2014 land ambulance approved budget for this capital purchase. The purchase is widely believed to be for a new ambulance base in the north. “The construction of a northern base will help contribute to sustainability through the health and social services area by providing appropriate care of our residents and visitors when in need of paramedic services,â€? he said in the report.

County approves subdivision plan near Battersea Frontenac Township, confirmed that this issue has been debated a lot at his council’s meetings. “It’s been three years and the project’s been downsized twice,” Davison said. “This is the third or fourth version and it conforms with our Official Plan. “I know there are opponents to this plan but I’ve never approved a subdivision where there weren’t opponents. “The developers have made major changes to their plan and we have no objections left that we can make.” Warden Janet Gutowski concurred with Davison’s assessment. “We need to be cautious about developments yes, but we also have to have good reasons to oppose or hold up these projects,” Gutowski said. “And in these matters, the townships are in the driver’s seat.” The proposed development is 23 hectares (56.8 acres) that would be divided into 15 detached lots. The development includes two stormwater blocks, a block for an existing single detached dwelling, a public roadway and a future road allowance. Davison said the road allowance leads into the hamlet of Battersea and the development is technically within the Battersea settlement area, which makes it compatible with stated provincial goals for development. In his written report, Manager of Sustainability Planner Joe Gallivan said county planning staff is satisfied that the development is consistent with the Provincial Policy Statement, meets the tests of The Planning Act and compiles with policies of South Frontenac’s Official Plan.

EMC News – Frontenac County Council approved a plan of subdivision for 15 lots on Sands Road near Battersea in South Frontenac Township at its regular meeting last week in Glenburnie. But it’s unlikely that shovels won’t be in the ground anytime soon, as the matter can be appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board. And given that a group of residents opposed to the subdivision has appealed South Frontenac’s zoning change decision, it’s a good bet the county decision could be appealed as well. “If the residents association appeals (the county decision), it would be rolled in with the zoning change appeal,” said planner Peter Young. Several county councillors expressed concerns about the project, including Coun. John Purdon, who noted residents’ comments about wetlands in the area. But Coun. John Inglis was the only one to vote against the approval. “I know this has been debated to death in South Frontenac but to me it’s new,” Inglis said. “I see protests and sufficient problems and I’d like to see it deferred. “Some of the residents’ issues were merely dismissed, not addressed.” “The wetlands are being protected through a site plan agreement,” Young said. “Buyers will not be able to build near the back of their property and these are not provincially significant wetlands.” Coun. Gary Davison, the Mayor of South

Smoking up some tasty BBQ at South Frontenac’s newest food truck By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@theemc.ca
EMC Business - Deep in the heart of cottage country, a new culinary destination awaits that is sure to delight barbeque fans across the region. Gareth Hewitt and his wife, Allison Bright Hewitt, opened The Big Smoke Food Truck June 22 at 238 Burridge rd. – the former location of a chip hut. “I knew I wanted to do my own food thing, and couldn’t find a good place available for a restaurant, so when I saw a food truck for sale I went for it, explains Gareth Hewitt.
Originally from England, Hewitt lived in a total of nine different countries before landing in South Frontenac, where Allison is from. He notes that it was important to him to work close to home so he can spend more time with the newest addition to the family: their nine-month-old daughter, Matilda. “My wife and Matilda come out to the truck on weekends to hang out, and the customers love seeing Tilly, he says. “It’s great to be in South Frontenac. While trained in the classic French style, Hewitt notes that he is happiest at his smoker.
“I love the simplicity of a good barbeque,â€? he says. “Just a decent rub on the meat and time in the smoker, then top it off with a tasty sauce and there’s nothing better‌You know you’re going to have a good meal eating barbeque.â€? Hewitt explains that Allison, who is also a chef, makes all the barbeque sauces while he develops the rubs and determines smoking times for the meats. Together, they spent a good year perfecting the recipes. “For me it’s been a matter of trial and error,â€? he says. “Most of our specials are things we’ve read or heard about and wanted to eat ourselves, so we test
them out on family ad friends before adding them to the truck. It’s a lot of work, but so much fun testing out new recipes. So far, the most popular menu items have been smoked sweet corn, enormous beef ribs – nicknamed dino ribs for their size, pulled pork, which is smoked for a minimum of 12 hours, and brisket, which is smoked for as long as 19 hours. “We also sell out of our beet, feta and pear salad quite often, Hewitt adds. “It’s funny because people will sometimes pull a face about the beets, so we tell them to give it a go and most of the time they end up loving it and get more to take home – that’s why we run out. He notes that the truck is a destination for the majority of customers, who come from Kingston, Westport, and everywhere in between. Because The Big Smoke is located in cottage country, many customers are also American. “We had a lady from Tennessee pull in the other day, and I was so nervous because they know their barbeque in Tennessee, Hewitt remarks. “But she liked it so much she took more home with her. That was one of my happiest days at the food truck so far. Using local suppliers, such as Wilton Cheese from Wilton, Garrett’s Meat Shop from Inverary and the Hillside Coffee Company from Sydenham is
another important aspect of Hewitt’s business. “You can’t beat local suppliers,â€? he notes. “It’s so great getting to know them and their products.â€? Hewitt also uses Leonard Fuels in Hartington to keep their generator going, and explains that owners Tom and Rozanne Stewart were kind enough to lend him their generator when his brand new one failed after just one week of running. “Luckily we were able to get a new and better generator, but if it wasn’t for the support of everyone around us I don’t know how we would keep going,â€? he remarks. He adds that he is very thankful to Allison’s family for all their help and support in getting the truck up and running, and to his own family for cheering them on from Australia and England. “I also want to thank all of my customers, and the people of Burridge for visiting and welcoming us into their community. The response has been fantastic. It has been great meeting everyone.â€? For more information on menu items – which are always changing - and operating, hours, please visit The Big Smoke’s Facebook page or website at www.thebigsmokefoodtruck.com. MC president Liz Crothers noted with thanks the efforts of Race Directors Wolfe Island’s Linda Thomas and Jim Gore, RRResults’, the many volunteers, local businesses and major sponsors including the Running Room and the WI Wind Farm for their ongoing support. “The board of the WICMC is already working on plans for next year’s run,” Liz said. “So, watch the Wolfe Island Classic 5/10 K Run Facebook page for any announcements as the year unfolds. The goal is to welcome 350 racers next year to this really fun day.” The proceeds from the run go to support the Wolfe Island Community Medical Clinic whose board is working hard to bring increased and improved medical services to all Wolfe Islanders.

Sydenham Legion urges members of the community to come out and join By Mandy Marciniak Correspondent
EMC News - The Royal Canadian Legion is one of the most well known veterans groups in Canada, with over 330,000 members. Legion branches can be found in almost every Canadian community, including Sydenham. Phil Somers, a retired Lt.-Col. and Membership Chair of the Sydenham Legion Branch 496, recently joined the Legion in January, but wishes he had done so sooner. “I decided to join because of my father, and I had 28 years of service in the Air Force. I really should have joined earlier, much earlier. Being
busy, I didn’t really think about it too much and I think that is part of the reason why I wanted to become membership chair, to help others think about it a little earlier in life.” Somers’ father was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for most of his life. He was a veteran of the Second World War who fought in Sicily, Italy and Holland. The Legion was always a very important place for him. Now, it is an important place for Phil as well. “For veterans, it is a place and an opportunity to tell war stories, and to listen to the war stories of their comrades. It is a place for relatives and friends of veterans to tell their stories. It is a place for socializing,
meeting new friends and neighbours, and enjoying a range of enjoyable activities such as games, sports, and even dancing.” Sadly, membership in the Legion is declining. There are fewer and fewer veterans from the Second World War and Korea, and many of those who are around don’t often belong to the Legion anymore. That said, Legion membership is no longer reserved only for veterans. There is a category of membership for anyone who is interested in joining the Legion. “At our Sydenham Legion, we have a large-screen TV, two pool tables and free WiFi. For rural communities, the Legion is often the hub

of the local area, where you can often walk down the street and enjoy an inexpensive beverage with your old friends and meet new friends,” explained Somers. In Sydenham, there are around 200 members of the Legion, but they need and want more. “We really want to get the word out that our Legion is a great place with lots of interesting people. We want to attract more local veterans to join or re-join. And by veterans, we also very much mean currently serving and recently-retired men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces and the armed forces of other countries. We want everyone, especially young people,” urged Somers.

In Our Opinion
Yes Virginia, lake plans are a good thing to have Craig Bakay Reporter
editorial@theheritageemc.ca
EMC Editorial – The completion of lake plans for Kennebec and Sharbot Lakes are a good thing, probably not in the way the authors of said plans intended, but nevertheless they are important documents in the sense that they may be very useful in years to come. Useful how, you ask? While it’s true that lake associations, however well meaning, have zero authority when it comes to law-making, the fact that they’ve undertaken the effort and expense to put something down on paper means that there is a record of concern for the health of our lakes. Ever since the folks at Bob’s and Crow Lakes undertook the exercise several years back, it’s become kind of a thing to do for lake association executives. It’s also become a lot easier because the Bob’s and Crow Lakes plans blazed a trail that the
others could follow. This too is a good thing. Since most of the lakes around here are pretty much the same, big holes in the ground that were filled with water when the glaciers receded, much of the information for one lake is transferable to most of the others. Ironically, Bob’s Lake was created mostly with damming and watershed “management but that’s another story. And this is not to say that each lake, and therefore its plan, is not unique. Of course they are. For example, the Kennebec Lake Plan is a slick 16 pages (which as any real newspapercreature knows is a good length for putting on a press) and the Sharbot Lake plan contains some nifty sections listing the flora and fauna that can be found in the immediate area. Granted, having a list of the trees, shrubs and wildflowers around a lake may appeal mostly to the locals but, since I live in Sharbot Lake, I think it’s a great thing to have. But all the window-dressing aside, plans or no, these documents are not bylaws, and they’re certainly not provincial or federal statutes, so why should we care
Short-sighted law makes for perfect injustice
what the lake association executive at the time thinks is important? The reason we should care is that this establishes a good degree of a community’s feelings and priorities as to how things should be. Call it community standards if you like. These in turn allow politicians to stand up and claim “we care about our lakes when faced with pressures from outside developers who see stretches of shoreline bereft of condos and starter castles while dollar signs dance in their heads. Make no mistake about it. There are plenty of people out there who would like to profit from every square inch of lakeshore and are only held at bay by our township Official Plans that require minimum frontage on lakeshores, minimum setbacks and a whole bunch of environmental/archeological checks and balances before allowing construction to proceed. Years ago, I worked at newspapers in both the Muskokas and Kawarthas and saw first hand what greed can do to previously beautiful places. Perhaps if lake plans had been invented back then, those messes could have been avoided.
A defence of quiet Hollie Pratt-Campbell Reporter
@hollieprattcamp
EMC Editorial - Since I was a little girl, I have been described as “quiet by a wide variety of friends and acquaintances. Of course, quiet is not necessarily a bad thing. Teachers always loved me. So did old people and librarians. I was the good little girl who listened in class and did her homework; who played four square or hopscotch at recess with a small group of equally well-behaved friends; who seamlessly followed the rules and never caused ruckus in gym class. For years, this dynamic worked well for me, as I was always a pretty happy kid. I was never bullied and never had a shortage of friends. Notably, they were always among the more non-judgmental of my peers, but looking back I can see this was undoubtedly a good thing. (Who likes mean girls anyway?) Quiet served me well as a child, and predictably followed me into adult-
hood. These days, I am extremely conscious of the fact that people think I am quiet. Often I am even informed of my quietness to my face, as though it’s some brilliant new discovery capable of solving all my problems and alerting me to everything that’s holding me back in life. I’m never really sure how to take the quiet accusation. Is it that people are shocked to meet someone who’s not constantly chomping at the bit to get in their two cents? Who is equally or even more interested in learning about what friends and acquaintances are up to as boring them with details of personal successes? Who knows better than to jump uninvited into other people’s conversations – a practice that can only result in awkwardness and a negative reputation, at least in my experience. Is quiet supposed to be a nicer way of saying shy? weird? stupid? introverted? incompetent? Admittedly, it’s difficult for me to understand how most people see quiet as a character flaw, as growing up I was led to believe that it was an admirable quality. My parents taught me to value listening over speaking, because listen-
ing to others allows you to learn new things and understand different perspectives on important topics. They also taught me to think before I speak, because nothing good can come from mindlessly running off at the mouth, saying things you will look back on and regret or be embarrassed by. Perhaps I have fewer worthy things to say than most people, because most of the time I end up deciding to hold my tongue. That said, it’s not like I’m some kind of blank mute who is afraid to talk to people and express my opinions. The other day I walked up to the surgeon general of Canada, and politely asked him to summarize what he said in the speech he just gave because unfortunately my voice recorder didn’t pick it up. I also regularly write this column and the Heritage EMC’s side editorial, where I’ve never been shy about relating details of my personal life or laying out potentially controversial opinions. Over the years, I have come to terms with the fact that certain types of people might like or even respect me more if I was more of a talker, and that’s okay. What’s important is that I like and respect myself. Quiet works for me. It always has, and probably always will.

to retreat and has the right to stand his or her ground if he or she thinks deadly force is necessary to prevent death, great bodily harm or commission of a forcible felony like robbery. Unsurprisingly, this has led to some very interesting defenses in Florida’s courts over the past eight years. An investigative piece in the Tampa Bay Times analyzed nearly 200 Stand your Ground cases, and found that almost 70 per cent of the time the defendant goes free (59 per cent of the time if the victim is white, 73 per cent if the victim is black). Furthermore, defense attorneys have been found to use the law in ways not intended by legislators. In nearly a third of cases, for instance, the defendant initiated the fight by shooting an unarmed person or actively pursuing the victim. Perhaps most frighteningly, a genuine analysis of Stand Your Ground is not possible because when police and prosecutors decide not to press charges, they don’t always keep the records that led to their decisions. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We hope that law makers across the globe will take this quotation to heart, and do their best to prevent Stand Your Ground-style laws from being adopted in other U.S. and international jurisdictions.

EMC Editorial - With a mixture of terror and fascination, we watched with much of North America the events of the George Zimmerman trial. Like many, we were shocked and saddened when the news broke of Zimmerman’s acquittal. How could this man take the life of an innocent teenager and get away with it? Did Zimmerman’s past encounters with the law, in which he reportedly assaulted a police officer and had a restraining order taken out against him by his common-law spouse, not demonstrate that he was prone to violence and aggressive behaviour? Did he not bear any responsibility for directly disobeying the commands of law enforcement when he chose to follow 17– year-old Trayvon Martin around the Florida gated community? Even if one were to fully believe the defense’s version of events, whereby Martin confronted and then assaulted Zimmerman in the four minutes between the 911 call and the shooting, did the heavier and presumably stronger Zimmerman not bear some responsibility for electing to fatally shoot the youngster, rather than some other less lethal alternative? Not according to Florida’s Stand your Ground law. Signed into law by Governor Jeb Bush in 2005, Florida Statute 776.013 states that a person “has no duty

EMC News – Frontenac County will have a service delivery and organization review after all, but despite a couple of months of debate and wrangling, some members of county council aren’t entirely happy with the firm chosen to carry out the review and/or some of the processes involved. The county chose accounting firm KPMG over Ernst and Young and WSCS for the $125,000 contract that will assess the roles of about 400 employees. KPMG had been the county’s auditor since amalgamation but was recently replaced in that capacity. Coun. David Jones wondered aloud at the choice. “We’re putting the fox back in charge of the chickens,” Jones said. “Isn’t KPMG part of the process we want reviewed? “The tail’s got the dog again.” Treasurer Marion VanBruinessen said that KPMG offers several different accounting services and the people conducting the review would be different from those who
conducted the county’s audits. “These are two different contracts,” she said. “These KPMG representatives are not auditors.” The idea behind the review is to analyze the county administration, including job descriptions, budgets, and things like union contracts. VanBruinessen said it would be “a challenge” for KPMG and county staff to complete the review by the designated deadline of December, noting that a review in another municipality involving only two departments and 30 employees took six months. The choice was made by the Service Delivery and Organization Review Committee, which included committee Chair Walter Knott, Dep. Warden Bud Clayton, Coun. Denis Doyle and CAO/Clerk Liz Savill. Clayton defended the committee’s choice. “This was done by council,” he said. “It was very, very close but KPMG came out on top. “I don’t believe we’re giving the key to the fox.” Coun. Doyle, had argued against the

choice of KPMG at the committee level and still didn’t seem to totally happy with it. He even made a rather strange request, suggesting that in his capacity as “project manager” of the review, he be given signing authority for the contract. He was quickly reminded by Savill that under the Municipal Act as well as the county’s own bylaws, only the Warden and CAO had signing authority. However, Coun. Gary Davison did offer an alternative jokingly. “We might consider giving you signing authority if you’re prepared to pay for the study,” Davison said. Clayton seemed to take exception to Doyle’s apprehension concerning the committee’s decision and had a warning for his counterpart from Frontenac Islands. “You are the project manager, but a word of caution,” Clayton said. “When you are dealing with KPMG on this, stick to the terms of the RFP, not your own opinion.

Father’s patience runs out for Sunday picnic ther, who didn’t consider any meal worth pulling a chair up to the table for, unless it included meat and potatoes as part of the menu. But Mother let the stove die down because that meant a nice cool kitchen when we got back from our picnic on Sunday, a rare treat from a stove that blasted out blistering heat waves 24 hours a day every other day of the week. As soon as we got back from church, and while the boys and Fa-

EMC Lifestyle - All Mother needed for an excuse to have a picnic was a sunny and hot Sunday afternoon – after church, of course. Father thought the whole idea was nonsense, when you could spend the afternoon having a little nap in the grape arbour. “That once-a-year church picnic is enough for me,” he lamented. Father’s resting in the summer often moved him from the rocking chair in the kitchen with his feet on the oven door of the Findlay Oval, to the grape arbour, where an old lawn chair and the two-seater swing sat in the cool haven of the overhanging grape leaves. But of course, as for the Sunday picnic, Mother overruled and we five children were thrilled beyond belief...we would be spending the afternoon on the banks of the Bonnechere. It was a hefty walk to get to the river, overloaded as we were with baskets of lunch, bats and balls, our swim suits and towels, Mother’s newspapers, scrap books and diaries, and always I had to take at least one doll with me too. As long as Father had his pipe and a good supply of tobacco that was about all he was interested in lugging down to the Bonnechere. The cook stove would be allowed to go out on Saturday night. That meant a cold breakfast, which further annoyed Fa-
to hitch our old collie dog to, to pull my dolls around the yard. But it was better than lugging the heavy baskets down to the river. We always went to the same spot on the Bonnechere. This was where the old maple tree had long since fallen across the narrowest part of the river, and where there was a wide grassy bank and more trees. My sister Audrey spread out two blankets and covered the little wagon with

ther tended to the last-minute chores at the barn, Audrey and Mother would haul out of the ice box bowls of food that had been prepared the night before. This meant hard boiled eggs, mashed fine, sliced cold pork and roast beef, cucumbers, lettuce and tomatoes, and of course, a slab cake smothered in brown-sugar icing. It didn’t take long for thick sandwiches, sliced vegetables and a huge sealer of iced tea to be ready to pack into 11-quart baskets, all wrapped in an ample supply of clean flour bag tea towels. We had enough food to feed half of Renfrew County! As much as could be would be piled on the little wagon with the wobbly tin wheels, and which I used
another to keep the lunch as cold as possible. Wearing short pants for bathing suits, my brothers were in the water almost as soon as we hit the river, Mother had propped herself against a tree with her books and papers spread around her, Audrey and I hid behind a tree and stripped off our clothes and got into two suits Aunt Freda had sent us from Chicago. They were scratchy, made of pure wool, and as soon as they were wet, went as hard as cement, but they were all we had. Father walked around with his pipe hanging out of his mouth, not looking at all pleased. He asked Mother when she planned on taking
out the lunch, lamenting that what he had for breakfast couldn’t really be called a decent meal. Mother said lunch was a long way off, and he might as well settle down and have a little nap. The afternoon wore on. Emerson said he didn’t care if we ever went back home. The three boys had water fights, tried to catch fish with a makeshift pole, and jumped off the fallen tree to see who could land the farthest. Audrey was reading her books gotten from the Renfrew Library and I was playing with my doll, pretending she was a brand new baby and this was her first outing on a picnic. Well, Father never did settle down for a nap. He walked the shoreline, he lit and relit his pipe, and when he finally sat down with his back against a tree, he never took his eyes off the blanket covering the lunch. “Think I’ll head back to the barns to check on that cow that didn’t look too good this morning,” he said. Even though we had yet to eat the lunch, I knew Father wouldn’t be back. And I knew too, the cow had little to do with it. When the sun was heading for the west, and we had eaten the lunch, the boys had dried off, and everything was packed onto the little red wagon, Father still hadn’t come back. Mother assured me he would be just fine. “He
just doesn’t like picnics,” she said. We gathered up our belongings and started for home. I saw it before anyone else. There was smoke coming out of the chimney over our house! Mother just let out a long and laboured sigh when I pointed it out to her. We opened the kitchen door to blazing heat, and there was Father sitting at the old pine table. He hadn’t bothered taking off his straw hat, and in front of him was a dinner plate piled high with fried potatoes, slabs of salt pork, and enough buttered bread to feed a family of six! The white granite teapot was boiling on the stove, Father had opened a jar of preserves and they weren’t in a fruit nappy, but in a soup bowl! “Well, so much for a nice cool kitchen,” was all Mother said. Finally, Father stopped shovelling in his food long enough to look up from his plate and say to Mother. “A man can’t be expected to work from dawn to dusk and survive on a sandwich and a piece of cake,” then taking another long slurp of hot tea from his saucer. Staff members and volunteers at Providence Care are clearly focused on meeting the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of patients, clients and residents within their settings. But they need to have the right equipment available to make the experience of each person the best it can be. In fact, furniture and specialized equipment play an important role in the health and care of patients, clients and residents. What is existing is constantly in use and it gets worn out. As an example, electric beds typically require replacement DIWHU HLJKW \HDUV DQG WKH DYHUDJH FHLOLQJ OLIW ODVWV DERXW Ă€YH \HDUV The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation is currently working on a project to raise the necessary funds to upgrade electric beds, ceiling lifts and tubs across Providence Care’s three main sites: St. Mary’s of the Lake, Mental Health Services and Providence Manor. Electric beds used at Providence Manor cost about $3,000 each and are designed to facilitate recovery, ensure safety and provide extra comfort for residents who may be bedridden for long periods of time. For those who may be frail or physically challenged, guard rails and the ability to lower a bed to make it easier to get in and out are important. Special exit alarms can also alert staff so that they can assist a resident who may be attempting to get out of bed on their own. These specialized beds make day-to-day living safer and more comfortable for everyone. Ceiling lifts help individuals who cannot move themselves be assisted in a comfortable, safe way that helps preserve dignity. They are used across Providence Care as the best way to safely move people from beds to wheelchairs, to help them sit up in bed and receive assistance with personal care. Ceiling lifts cost about $7,800 each. There’s nothing like the comfort of a good soak in a bath, but at Providence Manor, there are a number of tubs that are aged and need to be replaced. Two tubs are broken and cannot be used. Specialized tubs cost about $30,000 each. With the support of people just like you, UHKF can make a difference in the lives of patients, clients and residents at Providence Care by helping to replace beds, lifts and tubs throughout the organization. Call UHKF for more information about how donors are making a difference in our hospitals or visit us online at www.uhkf.ca .

DAYTRIPPER CafĂŠ promotes the arts in Amherstview Mark Bergin
Places to explore and things to experience
EMC Lifestyle – “Zumba in Amherstview and “Yoga in YOUR Neighbourhood. These are some of the workshops going on in the yonder west of Kingston.
Amherstview may be a satellite community adjacent to Kingston, but Doug Smith doesn’t believe the view that Amherstview is simply a sleeper community, a feeder of workers to its
larger neighbour. In his cozy cafÊ, he’s bringing the arts to Amherstview. Artists’ works line the walls. Yoga classes, dance classes and an open mike jam session

all thrive in the shop known as Town Coffee Plus. It’s located in Loyalist Plaza, adjacent to the Beer Store. I’m a musician and jam regularly. Different people drop in to jam sessions. One of the newcomers, Chris Russell, told us about the Monday night music sessions at Coffee Plus. Last week, we checked it out. Doug Smith, the owner, greets visitors. He claims not to be tactful, but he offers a warm welcome. Kat McDonald, who sings and play the bodhran (Irish drum), says the owners of Coffee Plus are great supporters of music and all the arts. “The owner and staff are such lovely people, she said. “They’re laid back and supportive. If they know some of the musicians who come to Coffee Plus are performing somewhere else, they’ll stop by and support us. Five lads play the Beatles’ Obla Di Obla Da as we walk into the back room of Coffee Plus. Next comes Hearthache By the Number. I’m immediately drawn to the sounds of the resonator guitar, played by Jim Johnston. Jim Ariga works the beat with brushes on snare drum and ride cymbal. As for classifying the music, forget it. A touch of bluegrass, a pinch of blues, couple of teaspoons of folk, and a cup full of good time. But oh the sounds of the slide on the Resonator. Nothing like it.
Soothes my soul. If you’re not familiar with the resonator guitar, it looks like an alien acoustic guitar. Instead of the normal wooden face/soundboard, the resonator uses one or more metal cones (the resonator). The guitar can be played like a regular acoustic or on the lap using a slide on the strings. They were designed prior to the arrival of electric guitars. Wooden acoustic guitars couldn’t compete with the louder sounds of horns and percussion in live orchestras. The resonator’s unique and haunting sound gave it a life even after electric guitars hit the scene. They became popular in many styles of music, including blues and bluegrass. It’s all too rare to hear one played live, so it was a nice surprise to find one in the open mike jam at Coffee Plus. In the case of Jim Johnston, he plays his resonator on his lap in an open-G tuning. You don’t have to be a musician to attend the sessions. You can sit back, listen and call out requests. There’s little that stumps the folks, although no one knew the Pogues’ “Thousands Are Sailing when I asked. Doug Smith yells from the front room: “Play something that starts slow and gets fast. Continued on page 14

DAYTRIPPER Café promotes the arts in Amherstview Places to explore and things to experience
Continued from page 13
Russell launches into Blue Moon of Kentucky. Adding tones to the tunes were John Yagmina and Tom MacIntosh, both on guitar. MacIntosh also plays in Celtic Rumblings. The music session gets under way around 6 or 6:30 every Monday evening. People drift in. The evening I visit, Tom MacIntosh hauls in his guitar around 7. Kat McDonald intensifies the beat with the bodhran, the Irish drum, around 8. It’s a laid back setting. The tunes continue until around 8:30. “There was no coffee shop and meeting place in Amherstview where people could listen to live music or see art,” said Smith. “There was a real gap.” He points out that the coffee is organic and there are lots of treats, some of them gluten-free. There’s also free Internet. “We’re the only place offering gelato outside of downtown Kingston,” he said. “It’s available year round. The coffee is locally-roasted in Prince Edward County.” He noted that the cultural events on-site complement the room. “Part of the idea here is to have community involvement,” said Smith. “At night, you have nowhere
to go unless you want to have pizza or go to a bar. The arts play an important part of any community. We’re helping local artists.” Since opening, the cafe has hosted many events from seminars and business meetings to bridge groups/game nights to birthday, anniversary and retirement parties. “I heard about the jams through word-of-mouth,” said McDonald. “It’s informal and it’s all about the music. If someone new comes out, we’re oriented to fun. It’s not based on skill level. If someone makes an error, we laugh it off and keep playing. It’s meant to be a fun and supportive environment.” McDonald is familiar to many around the Kingston music scene. She’s played with many bands, including Celtic Rumblings. She learned the bodrhan from Jack Hickman about 14 years ago. “I’ll play and sing anywhwere,” she said. “I open my mouth and songs come out.” I’ll be heading back some time. But I guess I’ll have to leave my electronic and punkier gear at home. Given that there are three or four guitars at Coffee already, I’d better take my bass. I play several instruments: guitar, drums, bass, violin (pathetically), maliphone (also called a balafon or
Mark Bergin
bala—a xylophone from Mali), and other strange things lying around the house. But what makes me popular is that bass. Bands always seem to be looking for bass players. They’re a valuable part of any band. Without them, there’d be no one for the band to poke fun at. For example: How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb? Just one, but the guitar player has to show him how to do it. Music is life. I can live without food longer than I can live without music. However, if I visit Town Coffee Plus, I’ll be treated to both. If you’re interested in music and the arts (and good coffee and treats), drop in to Coffee Plus in Amherstview. The Monday night jams get under way around 6 or 6:30-ish. The “ish” is important. It is laid back. Cruising the islands, Kingston style By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@gmail.com
EMC Lifestyle - Despite the fact that it took me 30 years to climb aboard one, the boats of Kingston’s 1,000 Islands Cruises feature prominently in my childhood memories. Large portions of my summers were spent on Howe Island, where my grandparents and two sets of aunts and uncles owned homes; numerous times a day, we would catch a glimpse of the Island Queen, Island Star or Island Belle carrying groups of tourists through the 1,000 Islands. While clearly not a tourist myself, I was always a little curious to find out what these boating excursions are all about, so I decided to hop on one of the Island Belle’s 90-minute cruises as part of my summer water activities series. The first thing that came to mind as we set out was that I had picked a great day to cruise. The sweltering high-30s humidex in the city didn’t seem to be a factor out on Lake Ontario, where cool breezes greeted us as we sailed eastward toward the spectacle islands. “On a day like this, sometimes [locals] will come aboard because they just want to cool down for a bit,” noted Island Belle first mate Adrian Murray, reading my mind. “And a lot of them have never seen the town from the waterfront,” he continued. “So much so that often when we do get locals and we come back near Kingston, they ask what city it is. They don’t recognize it from the water – it’s like seeing your house from the air.” The Island Belle’s cruise features recorded, informative banter between “Sir John A. Macdonald” and an
official-sounding modern day women, offering two different perspectives on the historical sites and other points of interest the boat passes. As a Kingston native and quasi-history buff, I was already aware of the majority of facts discussed, but was still entertained by the comical way in which they were delivered. Good ol’ Sir John A. had little tolerance for the metric system, for instance, so the formal-voiced woman generously compromised and repeated measurements like lake depth and wind turbine power generation in imperial measurements - I assume for the benefit of American visitors. As we passed the Wolfe Island turbines, Sir John admitted he was a little perplexed by this whole “renewable energy” business, but in the end concluded that it seemed like we were on the right track. “A lot of people think it’s Sean Connery speaking,” Adrian remarked of the comical Scotch voice that is intended to sound like our first prime minister. I asked him what it’s like to drive a cruise boat for a living. “I enjoy being out on the water a lot,” he said. “I spend a lot of time around boats.” Adrian noted that he grew up in Kingston, and got his start in the boating business on the St. Lawrence II – which was incidentally the first activity I tried for this series. “I was mate there among other things, so sailing is a passion for me,” he said. As we cruised through the Whiskey Cut – the area between Cedar Island, Whiskey Island and the mainland –
Adrian even let me try my hand at steering the Island Belle. While the task itself was surprisingly easy, I still felt rather powerful, and was glad to be able to cross “drive a cruise ship” off my bucket list. I even learned several new things from the cruise. Did you know, for instance, that the first Wolfe Island ferry was purposely sunk off the shores of Kingston in order to be used as a destination for scuba diving enthusiasts? “It was going to be sold, but then
[some diving groups] won a petition to get it sunk as an attraction for diving tourists and local divers to swim to and learn how to dive off,” Adrian explained. A little over an hour later, we arrived back near shores of Kingston, heading from the area in front of the penitentiary to the 1,000 Islands Cruises dock at Confederation Basin. I was struck by the fact that Kingston did indeed look quite different from the water, and it was easy to see why some locals might not recognize it.
I never thought of our city as being large enough to have a proper skyline, for instance, but all the hotels and limestone buildings really do give it a signature look. It was neat to see all the swimmers and sunbathers enjoying the hot day at Breakwater Park, and of course the basin itself is always a pretty sight, with City Hall beautifully situated in the background. I would recommend a cruise to anyone looking for a way to cool down on a hot summer day and experience our city from a new perspective.

Murder mystery theatre Down a slippery slope comes to Kingston of oil choices By Kelly Reid Correspondent
EMC Events - Fans of interactive dinner theatre can look forward to a new production that will be held in Kingston during weekends this August. Mr. Spot Mysteries, a murder mystery dinner company based locally, will be holding a run of eight performances at the Old Stone Dining Room in the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. The first two shows will be held over the long weekend. Genevieve Landis, who founded the company and wrote the plot for the murder mystery, looks forward to a busy month of shows. “The cast is talented; the venue is unique and intimate, she says. Landis comes from a thespian background with the local Domino Theatre group. “I’ve always thought it would be kind of fun to put something together, she explains of why she decided to write a show of her own. Now, she hopes that a hearty reception for the August show will invite future performacnces. “If the market is receptive, we’d like to produce more, she says. The August show will involve a murder plot based in Kingston. A venture capitalist out of Toronto decides to build a historical theme park in Kingston, complete with a Sir John A. mascot and roller coaster. Clashes with a local environmental group lead to a grisly mystery. “This mystery has been written specifically
for the Kingston market with references to Kingston historical figures and landmarks, Landis adds. The audience is allowed and even encouraged to interact with the characters as they try to figure out “whodunit. Landis decided to produce the show after Arthur Milne, commissioner of the Bicentennial Commission, came to speak to Landis’ Rotary Club Chapter. “I think that kind of planted the seed, she says, explaining why her piece focuses specifically on Kingston. Though Landis is unsure what the future of Mr. Spot Mysteries looks like, she does know that keeping the pieces Kingston-centric is a goal. “We’ve gotten a very positive response from Tourism Kingston, the Bicentennial Commission, and the Sheraton, she says. “The hopes are that people come out and laugh and love it. “I couldn’t be happier to see Mr. Spot Mysteries seize the opportunity presented by our community’s connection to Sir John A., especially given the upcoming 200th anniversary of Macdonald’s birth. I also want to pay tribute to the Four Points by Sheraton for providing a venue for this unique show. I can’t wait for opening night, adds Milne. The Mega-Park Murder Mystery will take place evenings on Aug. 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23 and 24.  The mystery begins during cocktails at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available to purchase online at mrspotmysteries.ca or by calling 613-530-7768. The three-course dinner and theatre package costs $68 + HST.

EMC Lifestyle - “Hi Brian, The ‘Maintenance Minder’ system on my 2013 Honda Accord EXL first came on a couple of weeks ago so I had a look in my Owner’s Manual to see what oil was specified. The book says use Premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil with an API Certification Seal on the container. A note at the bottom of the page says “You may use synthetic motor oil if it is labeled with the API Certification Seal and is the specified viscosity grade. I always used regular detergent oil on my replaced 2003 Accord V6 and had good service so planned to do the same with this car. I asked the dealer where I bought my new car about the oil and was told they only use synthetic oil and do not carry the detergent listed. I then asked what type of oil was installed at build and they were not sure. I then called Honda Customer Service to ask what was in the engine when delivered and was told they could not tell me - I think the expression “proprietary information was used. What oil do you or your fellow experts think I should use?
Thank you for your time William J. (Bill) Taylor The original factory oil in your Honda was not synthetic but a specially formulated regular (or dino) oil designed to ensure a proper break-in. After than point synthetic oil has the distinct advantage over dino due to its ability to adhere to internal engine friction surfaces and thereby reduce ‘start-up’ wear (the wear caused in those few seconds when an engine is first started but the oil has not reached all the internal passages). The ‘detergent oil’ spec is a throwback to earlier days (pre-1960s) when it was first used on a large scale. The majority of engine oil sold to retail customers has API certification. Synthetic is definitely pricier than regular oil and it won’t extend your oil change intervals as synthetic oil gets just as contaminated as regular oil in any engine. Honda doesn’t mandate synthetic oil in this vehicle but lists it as an acceptable alternative. If you’re going to use synthetic, stay away from semisynthetic blends, because, unlike their name suggests, they contain far less than 50 per cent real synthetic oil (the actual figure is usually 15 per cent). My own preference is Mobil1 oil for synthetic, and if you plan on keeping your Honda for a long time, I’d start using it at the first oil change service. And another reader slides in with an oil question (I really did get these back to back).
new cars specify the use of synthetic oil, which I’ve been told by some mechanics, is not really necessary. Is synthetic oil superior to regular, and if so, to a degree that justifies the price difference? Incidentally, the oil companies have a sweet deal going (what else is new?). I buy oil (Quaker State) in 5 litre containers. My car takes 4 litres so I save one and keep doing this until I have 3 litres saved with the idea of buying 1 litre to top up. However, you can only buy the smaller amount in .946 L containers! Another plan shot to hell!
Thanks!
 P. R. MacKay
With regards to synthetic versus regular or dino oil as it’s called here are some numbers: If you average three oil changes per year over eight years of ownership you would spend roughly an extra $900 for a good quality synthetic (Mobil 1) over dino oil at average prices from national chain stores. In addition to the reduced start-up wear (see above) it also flows better in extreme cold and is less likely to create sludge in high heat.
If a vehicle carries a recommendation from its manufacture to use synthetic oil, you risk the chances of having a warranty repair denied if you use regular oil.
It really depends on how long you plan on keeping a vehicle, how susceptible it is to engine wear, and if its maker recommends synthetic. From my experience I can tell you $900 won’t go very far to overhaul or replace an engine, so in my humble opinion using synthetic oil is insurance and worth the extra money. The Merrickville Car Show and Shop on July 21 was smoking hot, and the weather was rather warm too. My wife and I toured the endless fields, parking lots and side streets full of chrome from the beginning of the last century to the start of this one. The only thing warmer than the weather was the hospitality of the town’s residents and the sweat on the volunteers’ brows. Job well done! The Merrickville event is a hard act to follow but on Sunday, July 28 the Rolling Thunder Car & Motorcycle Show will sure give a try in Smiths Falls at Lower Reach Park. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and as with most summer show and shines, the action will take place well into the afternoon. Check out www.rollingthundercarclub.com for more details. The Frontenac EMC - Thursday, July 25, 2013 19
So where was I when I left off about Frontenac Islands? By Margaret Knott Correspondent
EMC News – One of the larger events that happens on Wolfe Island aside from the annual 5K-10K Classic Road Race and the Family Ball Tournament, is the Wolfe Island Music Festival. The Music Festival, because it brings so many people to the island , many of whom stay overnight , has many extra requirements to consider. So the visit to council by long time Music Fest Coordinator, Virginia Clark, and partnering with her this year from Wolfe Island, Michelle Joy, was very opportune. Some of the issues finalized at the July council meeting included a resolution to allow overnight tenting at the Wolfe Island Community Centre Grounds for two nights from August 9th to August 11th. Tenting must be booked in advance ( as far as I can determine from the festival web site), and there are some reminders to campers who will be camped in
an area adjacent to full time residents, e. g. no campfires, no loud music or drumming. And, of course, there is the matter of no littering. Recycling bins for the event are on loan from the city of Kingston, and the township provides many refuse cans. A further resolution allows a ‘Vendors Village’ on the grounds for the day of the festival , August 10th. Liability and policing for the event were raised as a big concerns for the festival organizers. Policing includes on site only, and dock and village patrols. It was concluded after much discussion and clarification that the township’s Wolfe Island ward will cover 50% (fifty per cent) of the cost of policing the 2013 Music Fest providing the cost is not more than the 2012 costs. Township will also make the application to the OPP. The township’s Noise Bylaw, led council to pass a resolution exempting the Island Grill, the General Wolfe Hotel and St. Margaret’s Hall,
(all 3 holding music events on Friday evening Aug.9th) from the 11:00 pm curfew in the bylaw to no later than one a.m. (Aug.10th) and that the Saturday Aug. 10th Community Centre grounds curfew be extended to no later than 11:30 pm. There was no mention made of how MTO plans to handle the crowd of Music Festival attendees walking on the ferry for the Friday August 9th events on Wolfe Island. However you will remember that last year, passes were issued to persons in cars, on bicycles and walking on, up to the maximum number of persons 300 (including crew members) allowed on each ferry crossing. The approach worked well. *Increased vandalism, burnt mail boxes and trashed cottages on Wolfe Island came to light at the July council meeting. Council will consult with the OPP on how best to deal with these situations at a forthcoming meeting perhaps in September. * By Law enforcement will be

contacted to ticket people disregarding the “No parking in the ferry line” unless going on the ferry signs, and other no parking regulations in Marysville at this very busy time of year. Marysville welcomes visitors to the island, but the ferry is its lifeline and whatever messes up the ferry, messes up life for islanders…. FYI Fire & Rescue Chief Chesebrough of South Frontenac, where he manages 9 fire stations, not only worked with Wolfe Island’s Fire Chief Tim Hawkins in evolving the Medical Tiered Response Program in coordination with the ambulance services on the island, but he is also coordinating the RFP for a new radio communications system study for all Frontenac township chiefs and road maintenance heads. Once the preparatory work is done, Chief Chesebrough will issue the RFP. County council has agreed to reimburse the various townships for their shares of the cost of the study. The next Township of Frontenac
Islands council meeting will be held Mon. Aug.12, 2013 Howe Island , 6:30 pm. Around Town: *Islanders have like everyone else been looking for a cool place to go. And of course the library on Wolfe Island has been open for that purpose. Some people may have even dropped in to the Town Hall also air conditioned… * But the heat never deters the ardent golfer, does it, and…. The Wolfe Island Riverfront Golf Course is lovely, and perhaps the coolest golf course around, overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway with its steady breeze … For more information: wolfeisland.com Coming events: Taste of Wolfe Island Presents July 27TH Tickets: Fargo’s * Wolfe Islands Family Ball Tournament, August 2nd * WI Music Festival August 09,10th * Scene of Crime Festival Saturday August the 17th * Euchre 7pm Thursday’s WI United Church For further event information visit: wolfeisland.com

The war rages for years, and the jaegers seem to turn the tide, but the kaiju kept coming. They get bigger, stronger, and more dangerous. Then they start to come through the breech more frequently, and begin to overwhelm the jaegers. Now the last four jaegers are going to make one last run to try and close

Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) was one of the original pilots of Gypsy Danger along with his brother. Then his brother was killed in action, and Raleigh walked away from the program. laughs. She cries. She expresses. Every parent—actually, every person—should be an artist. I don’t mean that in terms of sitting down and creating a painting. I mean that each parent should listen to his or her inner voice and the partner’s (if there is one) inner voice about what’s right. Intuition isn’t some airy-fairy concept, and it’s rarely wrong. Intuition is simply listening to the inner voice that garners its knowledge from years of experience on levels we don’t consciously comprehend. It’s how Tricia Knowles lives. Her career began in broadcasting. She grew up in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley where she attended college in Kentville for a program in broadcast journalism and marketing. After graduation, for about 15 years, she worked in radio broadcasting and as a Promotions and Marketing Director for stations in the Maritimes and Ontario. We met several years ago when Tricia was planning one of the first Kingston Unplugged events in support of Earth Hour. “I think loving and caring for our earth and the nature that we take from is our responsibility, and as human beings it’s important to give back to the earth. She talks about Native spirituality and ways of earth-consciousness. I discovered
her writing skills when she started a blog called

Baby Brainz. Then I’d see her stories in publications around town. I follow her Baby Brainz blog for new moms even though I’m not a mom and I’m certainly not new. My youngest is 15, far removed from baby stages. But I like good writing, especially stuff that’s honest and open. “When I had Penelope, a lot of
new moms weren’t talking about topics I needed them to talk about. I found a few friends who were very open about post-partum sexuality, lack of sleep and zombie frustration. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death across the globe. According to the World Health Organization, ischaemic heart disease, in which blood supply to the heart is reduced, is the leading cause of death in middle- and highincome countries and the fourth-leading cause of death in low-income countries. Perhaps the most troubling fact about the prevalence of heart disease is that it can be largely preventable. The American Heart Association notes that there are several ways to easily improve heart health and avoid becoming one of the millions of people to succumb to heart disease. * Embrace aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is essential to cardiovascular health. Daily aerobic exercise, which can be as simple as walking around the neighborhood, can help men and women lower their blood pressure, maintain a healthy weight and lower their bad cholesterol, which can circulate in the blood and cause blockages that can lead to heart attack.
* Adopt a low-sodium diet that’s also low in cholesterol. Diet can be a friend or foe with regards to heart disease. A heart-friendly diet that’s low in sodium and cholesterol can help you maintain healthy cholesterol levels as well as a healthy blood pressure. * Monitor your blood pressure. A blood pressure reading is a staple of many doctor visits, but men and women should monitor their blood pressure even when they aren’t visiting their physicians. High blood pressure does not always produce symptoms, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t potentially deadly. High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and can contribute to heart and kidney disease. So be sure to monitor your blood pressure and discuss with your physician ways to lower high blood pressure.

She’d never planned to have children. “So I didn’t have this experience of getting ready and all this maternal stuff. Here was a little person. I went into this-is-what-needs-to-bedone mode. I didn’t care what people around me thought. It turned out that I met amazing women. “Baby Brainz just started by me getting out some frustration about being a parent, she said. “Every time I’d say something, someone would say, ‘Tricia, you should blog about that.’ After her maternity leave ended, she returned to work for two months. “It just didn’t feel right, she said. “I knew it was time for new opportunities. My partner is very supportive. So I decided to take a year, do some freelance writing, event planning and promotion, and marketing. I took the extra time to be with Penelope. She is only two now and I’m happy where I am. She explained that motherhood and time away from broadcasting offered her a revelation. “On radio, you’re behind a mike, and when you’re on air you’re wearing a mask, she said. “As much as I’d try not to, I was still wearing a mask. After being with Penelope and spending a full year not wearing that mask, when I went back, it just didn’t fit anymore. A couple of key moments in her career involved physical injuries. She blew her voice. After attending a Buddy Guy concert and cheering rather enthusiastically, she found she couldn’t talk. “I’d bruised my larynx, she said. “I lost my voice. For three months I couldn’t talk. I learned how to listen. At another time, she injured her back. That led to one of her most cherished accomplishments, Kingston Unplugged. “I started Kingston Unplugged when I was out with a herniated disk in my back, lying on the living room floor, typing a proclamation to
the City of Kingston, she said. “After hearing what happened in Australia in 2007, I thought it was amazing and it was going global in 2008. We had a small rally around the water fountain for 60 people. The following year, the little event grew and included a concert that attracted 600 people. “The year after there were 1200 people, she said. “The last couple of years, we’ve had 1800 to 2000 people visiting throughout the night. We’ve made it into an educational event and kept it local. She’s proud of taking an event, promoting it and watching it grow. The process speaks clearly of her promotion and marketing skills. She’s passing on the responsibility to Sustainable Kingston. I wondered if it was difficult giving away this “baby and watching it leave home. “I’ll still be involved, she said. “Whether you agree with Earth Hour or not, it’s a remarkable educational opportunity. It’s a demonstration that’s about more than just an hour. She says that the local support has been rewarding. “The guys at Kingston Soundworks donate everything. They don’t get a dime, she said. “Those guys are incredible. They understand the value of community. That’s what makes Kingston so amazing. It’s a community. I like to fill my life with interesting people. That doesn’t mean commercially successful people. It might be a famous musician in Dublin or a corporate lawyer in New York. But it’s just as likely a homeless busker in Manhattan or the extremely introverted playwright. Fun at the 178th Annual Odessa Fair EMC Events - The 178th annual Odessa Fair was held at the fairgrounds from July 11-14 with plenty of attractions for visitors of all ages. Livestock competitions, horse and tractor pulls, live music, birds of prey from the Canadian Raptor Conservancy, a midway, and the demolition derby kept spectators well entertained throughout the event.
