Farmers Market event a way to show off area’s history and heritage By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — Perhaps there is something in the water around the Sharbot Lake area but the folks who put on the Sharbot Lake Farmers Market never seem to miss an opportunity to dress up and/or be goofy. Whether it’s bee hats with antennae, chicken costumes or tuxedos, they never seem to be at a loss. This week (Aug. 2), it’s Maple (syrup) Day and the mind boggles at what might be expected. But perhaps their most ambitious project to date comes two Saturdays from now (Aug. 16), when the market will step backwards in time for Market Heritage Day. “I guess Pat Furlong suggested theme days in the first place but we all liked the idea,” said spokesperson Mary de Bassecourt. “We did a smaller heritage theme a couple of years ago that went over well and we did a promo for this event in June. “Perhaps these events are like a dress rehearsal for the big 150th Frontenac County Anniversary celebrations in 2015.” She said the Heritage Market theme came from local history enthusiast Mike Procter. “Mike will be doing knife and hatchet throwing demonstrations as well as fire starting demonstrations,” de Bassecourt said. “And Bob Miller will also be there with some of his musical instruments.” For his part, Procter seldom misses an opportunity to demonstrate, talk about and/ or generally live his favourite historical period. “Well, we do try to promote the heritage of the area,” he said. “For example Bob (Miller) portrays a gunsmith from the Revolutionary War period, around 1750-1770. “He has his Wedge Tent (a common dwelling from the area) where he sets up his display of flintlocks he’s made, as well as all the accoutrements a gunsmith of that area would have had. “And he also makes instruments, guitars and dulcimers, from the period and plans to do some music on them.” Procter and Miller have been doing these historical displays for about 10 years now, featured

prominently at the February Heritage Festival first in Crow Lake and last year in Arden. A big feature has always been the opportunity to try knife and hatchet throwing, he said. “We did some throwing earlier this year The bunch from the Sharbot Lake Farmers Market never seems to be at a loss for at the Market and the next week, people were promotional ideas, or people to carry them out, such as dressing up like chickens to asking ‘where are the knife throwers?’” promote Poultry Day during the Canada Day Parade. Photo/Craig Bakay For Procter, an interest in history has sort of “taken on a life of its own” and he’s really become more and more interested in how our contemporary social conventions have come to be and where we came from. “I hated history as kid,” he said. “It was just a bunch of unrelated dates. “But now, living the life the people that came before us lived makes you appreciate that you can survive and I fell in love with it.” For example, he said, knife throwing was never really a martial art, but more of a social contest. “There wasn’t really that much cleared room for big sporting events,” he said. “But you don’t need a lot of room to throw knives so it became a game of skill, chance and a way to intimidate those around you.”

Eleanor Bannister with a photo of her late husband, John.

A legAcy of love

E

leanor Bannister admits she has been very lucky in love. She was fortunate to have two wonderful husbands. The first was her high school sweetheart, Gordon Shantz, who died in 1992. Five years later, she fell in love with another widower, John Bannister, and, as Eleanor explains, “we had 15 wonderful years together.” Both John and Eleanor previously agreed they would be laid to rest alongside their first spouses. But through their generous support of KGH, their names will live on together on the donor walls of Kingston’s hospitals. “I want the hospitals to be there when people need them,” Eleanor says of the reason she supports the hospitals. Not only do the facilities need to be available, but the equipment needs to be up-to-date and staff needs to know how to provide the best treatment. “We have a shining star here, and it needs to keep shining.”

Eleanor’s ties to Kingston General Hospital (KGH) go back decades. After first husband, Gordon, graduated from chemical engineering at Queen’s University in 1953, they married. Eleanor worked as a nurse on KGH’s Victory 1 for the first year after the wedding. She left the nursing profession when she had her first child – but many will argue that she has always continued her compassionate ways of looking after others. Gordon was diagnosed with diabetes while still in high school and by 1984, due to complications from the chronic condition, he had one of his legs amputated. The other leg was amputated the next year. “I just thought when Gord died, boy, I’d better start giving to that hospital, after what we’ve had from them.” Eleanor became a loyal annual supporter of the hospitals. When she married John in 1997, he was already a regular and generous supporter of

the hospitals, she recalls. When John met with a staff member from UHKF a few years later, to discuss a planned (estate) gift, he insisted that he wanted Eleanor’s name to be recognized as well. But Eleanor established her own bequest in order to match John’s gift and have their names recognized together. Following John’s death, she decided that she wanted to have the pleasure of seeing her gift put to immediate use and their names publicly linked to a good cause, so she changed her bequest to a lifetime gift. Their combined six-figure gift is being recognized through the naming of the John and Eleanor Bannister Family Waiting Room in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at KGH for the next 25 years. The Bannisters’ generous support will touch hundreds of families who will accompany loved ones to the ICU in the years ahead. It’s a love story with a /UHKFdn legacy of caring. /UHKF

St. Andrew’s organist Gary Hawley honoured for 65 years of playing at church By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — Week in and week out, for the past 65 years, Gary Hawley has played the organ for all kinds of services in St. Andrew’s Church in Sharbot Lake. Last Sunday, they gathered to honour his achievement with a special service and reception. Ken Fisher, one of the organizers of the special day, estimated that Hawley has played more than 3,500 events, including weddings, funerals, regular and holiday church services. Perhaps Governor-General David Johnston summed it up best in his letter when he said: “Year after year, you have demonstrated the commendable traits of dedication and generosity, both of time and heart. “Your remarkable commitment to St. Andrew’s has earned you the respect and admiration of your friends, family and colleagues. Examples like yours make our communities stronger, and our country a smarter and more caring place to live.” The Governor-General wasn’t the only one to write a note for the occasion. Hawley was presented with a memory box containing 15 letters from people whose lives he touched over the years. He also received a mug for his favourite hot chocolate and a silver plate representing the 18 priests he’s worked with since he

began in 1949. The current priest, Incumbent George Kwari, was only too happy to point out what an asset Hawley has been — and still is. “I wasn’t expecting the attendance we get here,” Kwari said. “When you have a community organist like him, it really changes the dynamic. “I rely on him.” For his part, Hawley seemed to take it all in stride, with a humility most musicians aren’t generally known for. “I live here, I like music, I like the people,” Hawley said. “I’m so thankful for the community we have — not only St. Andrew’s — and I’m so proud to be

associated with it.” Another thing he’s thankful for is the instrument he has. “This is the third organ,” he said. “The first was a pump organ, then we had an electronic one and this one is digital. “It doesn’t need fixing as much.” Hawley did admit to missing “one or two” services over the years but not many. And for the vast majority of them, his wife of 67 years, Helen, was by his side. When asked how she’s handled being married to such a dedicated musician, she replied with a grin: “It’s been no problem at all — probably because I like music.”

Meet your market vendor: Herb Haven By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette News – Many of us use herbs to add spice or flavor to our food on a daily basis, but did you know that herbs can also be used in medicinal, spiritual and aromatic practices and have numerous health benefits?

“I love teaching people about the power of herbs,” says Herb Haven owner Michelle Cole. “They don’t just make your food taste good, they can have a lot of health benefits and many people don’t know about that. Every herb has medicinal properties and they are healthy for your body. I know from experience.” Cole was ill for a number of years

and dealt with respiratory issues by using puffers and prescription steroids. After a few years of being on medication she looked for alternatives and was surprised to find that herbs and different natural remedies were actually more effective. “I haven’t used a puffer in three years since I started using natural products,” added Cole. “I feel so much better and that inspired me to educate more people and start growing my own products. Cole, along with partner Brad Smith, started Herb Haven in 2010 on a piece of land in Napanee. The duo took some courses on herbal products and preventative medicine before marketing and selling their products at various markets in 2011. Since then, they’ve seen great success and have even expanded to teas, oils, vinegars and spice blends. “We grow all of the herbs naturally and they are all hand cut and air dried and then chopped and ground,” explained Smith. “The vinegar and oil are cold infused. After the product is dried we put it into big containers and combine with vinegar or oil and we let the herbs naturally sink to the bottom and by that time the oils are out of the plants and the oil or vinegar

becomes infused with the herbs. It’s a longer process but it’s worth it.” Herb Haven products have also been picked up by local grocery stores like Farm Boy in Kingston and Seasons Fine Foods in Napanee - pretty good for a retirement project. “This is what we chose to do with our retirement and we couldn’t be happier,” added Smith. “We love meeting the customers and we love coming out to the markets every week. It is a great way to spend your time.” Smith and Cole also sell herbal medicines at their stand, but those are sourced from an herb farm that specializes in those products called St. Francis Herb Farm. While the process of making the medicines fascinates both of them, they have no plans to expand in the future. “They really are experts in the field so we leave that up to them and we just carry their products,” added Cole. “We just want people

to know that these products exist and they really do work.” Education is really what it’s all about for Herb Haven, and they even give talks about the power of herbs at community centres and schools. Cole encourages more people to come out and talk to them about the herbs and see for themselves. “People should come see our smiling faces and come out and learn about herbs.” Visit Herb Haven at The Frontenac Farmers Market on Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m in Harrowsmith just off of Hwy 38 and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m in Verona at Prince Charles Public School or check out their website at www.herbhaven.ca

Editorial

In Our Opinion

When it comes to learning our own history, Canada has a long way to go Craig Bakay Reporter

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette Column — You gotta love Newfoundland. First, there’s an iceberg that looks like Batman. Then they find a tiny crucifix at the Colony of Avalon Archaeological Site in Ferryland, Nfld. What’s significant about this is that it confirms that there was at least one Catholic in the colony founded by Sir George Calvert in the 1620s, a colony based on a philosophy of religious freedom in which Protestants and Catholics lived together in presumed harmony, something that didn’t seem to be the norm at the time in 17thCentury England. Now, perhaps a minor colony in 17th-Century Newfoundland isn’t all that earth-shaking but it is interesting to note that at least, somewhere in this country, archaeology is taking place. The rest of the country could take this as inspiration and start looking a little harder for more of our past. This is not to say we don’t have archaeological sites, Petroglyphs Provincial Park northeast of Peterborough comes to mind. Another personal favourite is Head-Smashed-

In Buffalo Jump northwest of Fort Macleod, Alberta. And of course we have the Royal Tyrrell Museum (OK, technically that’s paleontology but it’s still the history of Canada - okay, pre-history). At any rate, the point is, we really don’t know that much about our own history. I know I’m curious, especially about the time period before the Europeans started coming here in droves. They like to call this period Pre-Columbian as in ‘before Christopher Columbus came in 1492. But it really looks like the Vikings beat him here by a wide margin so maybe we need a new word to describe this period of North American history. Unfortunately, the Americas lost a lot of their history when the Europeans came. Religious prejudices by the Europeans against the beliefs of the indigents living here is probably the biggest culprit in this. But, depending on which reports you believe, there are tantalizing studies of the Lithic Period (18,000 BCE-8,000 BCE) that suggest there were cultures here contemporary with Paleolithic sites around the world. The beginning of the Neolithic Period, in which agriculture first appeared, is often given around 8,000 BCE. What this means is that when the Egyptians and other cultures started

building pyramids, there were people in North America, and in all likelihood, Canada. What we don’t know is what they were up to. It’s a sad fact that most Canadians know a lot more about ancient Egyptians than we do about our own past. Of course, other areas of the world had a huge start on us in terms of archaeology. A lot of that probably had to do with pyramids. Legend has it that Napoleon was huge into them and assigned army officers to find out more about them. But Egypt is really only the size of Ontario. And the area where the pyramids are is relatively small, making exploration more reasonable (and they still haven’t found everything there). Furthermore, the area is mostly sand, has been for centuries. Sand has two advantages over tundra when it comes to archaeology. First, it’s a lot easier to dig in. Second, it hasn’t suffered glaciation, a process that tends to destroy a lot of things (artifacts, landscapes, settlements in all likelihood). So, perhaps we’re behind the 8-ball somewhat in the archaeology game, but here’s hoping we can find some cool stuff soon to spur on further exploration.

Celebrating the August long weekend – but why? Heritage Editorial – While many of us are happy to have another summer long weekend to look forward to, does anyone actually know why we have a long weekend in August? Like Family Day, the civic holiday originated as a ‘day of recreation’ and was approved by Toronto City Council in 1969. Since then, the holiday has taken on many different names and meanings across the country. Some provinces recognize the day as a statutory holiday, while others don’t recognize the holiday at all (Quebec, Yukon, and most of Newfoundland). In British Columbia, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick, the holiday is used to recognize the province itself (e.g. in Saskatchewan it’s called Saskatchewan Day). In Manitoba, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, the day is simply called a Civic Holiday and in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island the day is called Natal Day and is celebrated as a birthday for the two provinces. In Alberta, the day is known as Heritage Day, a day to celebrate the varied cultures and heritages in the province and in 1976 the Edmonton Heritage Festival was created. The three-day celebration of food, dance and handicrafts of cultures from around the world attracts thousands to the city each year. In Ontario, things get a bit more complicated and the name of the Civic holiday varies by city. In Toronto, the day is known as Simcoe Day, named after John Grave Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada from 1791 to 1796. In Ottawa, the day is known as Colonel By Day, in recognition of Lieutenant Colonel John By who supervised the construction of the Rideau Canal. The day is known as George Hamilton Day in Hamilton, Joseph Brant Day in Burlington, Founders’ Day in Brantford, McLaughlin Day in Oshawa, Alexander Mackenzie Day in Sarnia, James Cockburn Day in Cobourg, Peter Robinson Day in Peterborough, and the list goes on. Kingston may not have a special name for the day, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t celebrated across the city. This year the city will be celebrating with music in Market Square and a variety of other events so get out and celebrate the second last long weekend of the summer and enjoy the warm weather while you can.

Cottage Country Pet Supplies in Sharbot Lake caters to pet lovers By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — Ray Green has always loved animals. And originally from Sydenham, he has ties to this area. So, it seemed to be fate that the pet supply business on Road 38 closed down about the time he was ready to start his own store. “I have a background in animal nutrition including 10 years working for a national pet food operation,” he said. “Plus, I have four cats, three of which are rescues.” So, three weeks ago, he opened Cottage Country Pet Supplies in Sharbot Lake at the site of the former pet food store. “They used to have a pet food store here,” he said. “I’ve put a lot of money into this and now it’s a lot brighter, more open, with new lighting, walls and floor. “Plus, we’ve brought in a lot of new products, including ‘holistic’ foods in varying price ranges.” Green saw a need in this area. “First of all, a lot of people have told me they think it’s great that they don’t have to travel as far to get their pet food,” he said. “And unlike the big department stores where you try to ask a

question and the clerk disappears, we don’t mind spending the time to educate people on what’s best for their pet.” For example, he said, large breed dogs often have issues with their hips and joints. The right kind of food, like that containing glucosamine, can go a long way towards a healthier pet. “We carry some less expensive brands but people love their pets and once they’re educated, it makes sense to give the pets better food,” he said. “Some pets tend to eat more because they’re not getting the right nutrients. “But better food is still a lot cheaper than vet bills.” Often, it’s a matter of breed, he said. “For example, Labs will eat and eat and eat, so you can’t just leave out food for them to come to when they’re hungry,” he said. “Some breeds have more sensitive stomachs than others and we can help with that.”

Ray Green has revamped the old pet supply store on Road 38 in Sharbot Lake, bringing in more ‘holistic’ products. Photo/Craig Bakay

And, he said, if your pet doesn’t like the food, you can bring most of the more expensive brands back. It’s the same with flea and tick medications, he said. “Some animals have a reaction if you don’t put it on the right spot,” he said. “The medications we carry have an 800 number to call.” Green also carries a wide range of grooming supplies, cat scratchers, beds, leashes, collars and such. He also has birdseed, duck, deer feed in bulk and smaller quantities and plans on bringing in things like cat grass and eventually low maintenance fish. “We’re still working on finding out what people want,” he said. Oh, and feel free to bring your pet to the store. “All pets are welcome here,” he said.

Underdog victorious on the greens at Amherstview Golf Club tough. The weather was pouring rain. It was a tough one and it almost slipped away.” The final score was 72 72 71 (215) (-1) for Dillon, 71 73 76 (220) +4 for Beaubien. “It was a relief to get it done with,” he laughs. So what did it take to beat the reigning champion? Trying not to get too intimidated was key, says Dillon. “[Beaubien] hits the ball so far it can be intimidating at times,” he says. “You know you have to put your shot on the green because he’s going to wedge his in…It really came down to making putts and I happened to do that. I was hitting the ball well all week and it just felt good.” In the end, though, it all came down to the mental game. “I went to university for [business golf management] and as my prof there told me, it’s 90 per cent mental,” Dillon notes. “[I had to imagine] I was out there having fun, golfing with the guys, just like it was any other round.” The fact that Beaubien was such a great sport was also a huge help.

Kingston Heritage Sports - You could say that something of an upset occurred on July 13 at the Amherstview Golf Club’s 2014 Men’s Club Championship. Long-time champion Scott Beaubien, who won the tournament the last three years in a row, was forced to concede the title to Mike Dillon, 24. Dillon, who is the assistant general manager of the club, was a little surprised by his win, and modestly chalks it up to an unfortunate set of circumstances for Beaubien. “He’s the best golfer here at Amherstview, he just had a rough last day finishing a couple of holes. I went six under [par] through eight holes so I had a really good start. He just made a couple of bad swings and I took advantage of it, but he clawed back anyways.” The two were tied by the time they got to the final round. “When I made the putt on the last hole I honestly just wanted to drop out,” Dillon says. “It was so immensely

Each club sent 10 members, including one junior, one senior and the top eight from the club’s own championship. “It’s a team event so it’s good to bond with the guys and stuff like that,” says Dillon. The young golfer remarks that it feels amazing to have been so successful and to have advanced to the regional tournament. “It gave me a lot of confidence knowing that I can compete,” he says. “It opened my eyes to the fact that I can still play.” He adds, however, that he has no ambitions to become a professional athlete. “It’s fun and I love golf but I don’t Amherstview Golf Club 2014 Men’s Champion Mike Dillon

Plenty of ground covered at SLPOA annual general meeting By Craig Bakay Reporter

Gazette News — The Sharbot Lake Property Owners Association is always looking for volunteers for projects and articles for its newsletter, Pres. Kevin Browne told the association members at its Annual General

Meeting last weekend in Sharbot Lake. “We’ve been getting more ads for our newsletter, which means we need more articles,” he said. “But we also need people for the Love Your Lake program, the Shoreline Survey and Invasive Species Watch.” He said the website has recently been updated and they’ve been assisting with water access property septic pumping. “There are more than 80 properties on islands,” he said. Financially, the association is in good shape, with $3,092 in the bank as of July, said Treasurer Joyce Waller. She acknowledge a $5,000 grant from Frontenac County. One of the more interesting reports came from environmental issues co-ordinator Rem Westland, who presented a formula for how a lake basin is recharged with water. Westland gave a very optimistic view of things, in contrast to what he said is usually a pessimistic outlook. “Fifty years ago, gypsy moths were going to destroy everything,” he said. “Forty years ago, it was algae. “Today, it’s septic systems.

“Well, we’re not at the mercy of things always going bad. Today, (the technology exists) for us to use our septic systems to make the water better.” And speaking of septic systems, Eric Kohlsmith of the conservation authority was also on hand to give a report on voluntary septic system inspection. “Since 2010, there have been 97 systems inspected,” he said. “For 2014, the focus is on systems in the hamlet of Sharbot Lake.” And then Const. Bob Hahn took the stage for a talk and Q & A on “what to expect when we (the OPP boat) come up to your craft.” Hawn said essentially, they’re looking for the three L’s — liquor, lifejackets and licensing. “It’s a $120 fine for having open liquor in the vessel, just like on the highway,” he said. “You can take liquor in a sealed container from one cottage to another but you can’t have a glass of wine in your hand and say it’s for dinner. “And a coffee cup with a lid isn’t a sealed container either.”

He said they do inspect to see if all the required safety equipment (lifejackets, paddle, anchor, signaling device, waterproof flashlight, 50-feet of floatable throwing line, bail bucket) is on board, even is some of it seems a little silly. “I try to be as reasonable as I can,” he said. “I realize that if you’re bailing out a pontoon boat you’re in big trouble already, but you still have to have some sort of bailing device on board.” He also had some advice on when to tell it’s time to replace a lifejacket. “If you can’t read the instructions, it’s no good,” he said.

Helping the community one backpack at a time By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

Gazette News – As back to school season quickly approaches, backpacks are appearing in stores across the city, but what if the backpack you bought this year could also help someone in need receive a new backpack? That is the idea behind Givway & Co., a local company that is hoping to raise awareness about homelessness and the importance of backpacks across the city. The company is run by four Queen’s students who are taking part in the Queen’s Summer Innovation Institute program, a 16-week paid internship program that aims to spark innovation

and encourage entrepreneurship within the Kingston community. All four partners were interested in social innovation and giving back to their community so when it came time to come up with a business idea they asked local organizations what they needed. “We contacted a bunch of local organizations that need and accept donations,” explained group YEARS member Madeleine Neiman. “Through that research we found out that backpacks are things that a lot of people need. Whether it be a shelter or an organization that donates to schools, they are a constant need across all of the organizations we spoke to.” YEARS After deciding to run with the backpack idea

It was hard to beat the heat on Northcote farm Columnist editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Lifestyle - “Always had fans in New York” Mother said, sitting in a straight-back chair in the darkened kitchen. “Just plugged them in and away they went...cooled the whole house down in minutes.” Well, there would be no fans on the farm in Northcote! With no electricity, we had to rely on other ways to keep the old log house cool. And sometimes they worked, but most times, the heat of the summer won out. The Findlay Oval had already been rolled out to the summer kitchen on two logs. And we tried to keep the door closed between the summer and regular kitchens, but that didn’t always work either. Mother had been working in the garden before dinner, before the sun was at its highest, and she came in with the dish pan full of fresh yellow beans, bunches of carrots, and some green onions. Of course, she weeded while she was out there too, which added to her complaints about the heat. It was almost pitch dark in the kitchen. When the heat of the summer came with a vengeance, Mother immediately began the almost impossible task of keeping the house cool. Her first job was to take quilts out of the trunk where they had been stored after winter, and cover each window in the kitchen. There they hung, shutting out the blasts of the sun that hit the old house from early morning until after our suppers at night, and turning the room almost pitch black. To let a bit of light into the kitchen, Mother took a safety pin and fastened up the tiniest corner of each blanket, to take away from the total darkness. Father wasn’t the least bit happy with this arrangement, and said there had to be other ways to cool down the house. “Yes,” Mother retorted sharply. “If we had electricity, we could have fans.” As if poor Father could do anything about that! It was hard enough to find the money to buy coal oil for the lamps! Of course, there was no covering the windows in the summer kitchen...that would have served no purpose with the cook stove blasting away from early morning until after supper. So the main kitchen was always the coolest room in the house, and that was where Mother had collapsed that day, with her face beat-red, and the sweat rolling off the end of her nose. The noon meal was cooking out in the summer kitchen, and Father and the brothers had already washed up at the basin on the bench at the back door. When they opened the door where Mother, Audrey and I were trying to cool off, a blast of hot air swept into the room like a blowtorch. “Shut the door,” Mother yelled. With great effort Mother got off the chair, and as if bracing herself for battle, stood in front of the door separating the two kitchens, making sure Audrey and I were right behind her, and the three of us went out like a bolt of lightening to keep the cool air in, and the heat out.

Mercury and stood beside Mother’s chair and fanned her with all my might. She stopped wiping her face with the tail of her apron, and sighed with a contentment we hadn’t seen demonstrated all day. When one arm got tired I switched to the other, and I wondered if the air I was creating was anything like the fans Mother had in New York City. Well, it must have come close, because Mother told me to go to the cupboard and bring her down the sugar bowl with the egg money in it. I felt my way over to the cupboard, barely making out the bowl in the darkened room. Mother took the lid off and reached in, bringing out a coin. It could feel it was a whole nickel. “If it ever cools off, we’ll take a run to Briscoe’s and you can get yourself an ice cream cone,” she said. It was the first time I had ever been given anything out of the egg money. There was no such thing as allowances back then.

I had no idea how long Mother sat in the cooler room, but when I came down stairs after going up to my bedroom and tying the nickel in the corner of my hanky, joining the few other coins I had accumulated over a very long time, she was out in the summer kitchen, redding up the dinner table. Her face was getting red again, and she was swiping it with the corner of her apron once more. But there was work to be done. Her rest was over. I wondered if she would again, later in the day, go back to the cooler kitchen, and would I, once more, be able

to use the Renfrew Mercury as a fan, and would I then get another nickel out of the egg money sugar bowl for my effort? All I could do was wait for the hot summer day to once again take its toll, as I pictured my fast growing wealth upstairs in the corner of my hanky. Of course, there was no such thing as a salad plate for dinner at noon hour. Father had to have his meat, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert regardless what the big “Supertest” thermometer said, nailed to the outside frame of the back door. Father and the brothers loaded their plates as if it was their last meal on earth. And as soon as their plates were cleaned, they loaded up again. “How anyone can eat in this weather is beyond me,” Mother said, as she cut a raisin pie into four pieces. We three headed back into the cooler kitchen, which by noon hour was fast taking on the outside heat of the day, but still wasn’t as hot as where Father and the brothers were forking in their dinner. Mother again collapsed into a chair, and Audrey stretched out on the creton couch, and I stood like a stick not knowing exactly where I fit into this picture. I sure hated to miss a meal. But I wanted to stay close to Mother just in case she passed out, which my sister Audrey said could happen when you were overcome with the heat. I picked up a copy of the Renfrew

Enchanté

You are what you speak Being able to communicate via written and spoken language is a valuable skill that can be improved with study and practice. Style can be manipulated creatively. For example, the phrase “Oh. My. Goodness.” indicates emphasis on each word. You have to understand the rules before you effectively break them. At any time, there may be multiple projects in front of me: writing this column, a novel, a play or a magazine article; and editing other writers’ novels, non-fiction books, newspaper articles, lawyers’ briefs and medical/ scientific journals. Each has its own style. I have several reference texts nearby. The Chicago Manual of Style, The Associated Press Stylebook, The Canadian Press Stylebook and other texts sit within reach.

To anyone who wants to write well, there are three essential books. I recommend The Elements of Style by Strunk and White as well as Lynne Truss’ Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation. There’s a newly published book to add to that list: June Enchanté - Our use of language defines us. Casagrande’s The Best Punctuation Book, Period. How we speak reveals much about our backgrounds. It influences how Casagrande explains clearly and concisely that there isn’t one correct others relate to us. Our style of writing reflects our thinking. way to write, but there are many wrong ways. Linguistic anthropology fascinates me. Casagrande looks at the major forms of punctuation in the English I cringe as I watch educational philosophy regarding how to teach language. She describes rules of each style: book editing style for authors reading skills go through one fad after another. The simple and obvious of fiction, non-fiction and popular magazines; news media and business approach would be to base teaching methods on scientific research. writing, which is based on The Associated Press Stylebook (in Canada, Changes in curricula should be based on research findings, not upon the The Canadian Press Stylebook) and Webster’s New World College whims of bureaucrats. Dictionary; science style, based on The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (I’ve always found it humorous that a soft science organization gets to control hard science publishing standards. How did that happen?) and MerriamWebster’s Collegiate Dictionary; and academic style, which is based on The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. For each guideline, Casagrande places a B (book), N (newspaper), S (science) and/or A (academia) to indicate which style applies. For example, how do you punctuate the possessive ADMISSION: $7.00 ADULTS • CHILDREN UNDER 12 FREE of James? Newspaper and media style would punctuate this as FREE PARKING James’, but (most) book, scientific and academic styles use James’s. However, many book editors are moving toward (towards, in the UK) the news style. Space Exploration Do you always put two spaces after a period? You probably attended a one room school house shortly after Confederation (I’m exaggerating) and before the advent of the computer. Two spaces following a period have not been used in a long time. They drive editors and graphic design pros nuts. It may just be an extra space to remove, but if, like me, you sometimes spend 12 hours in a day as an editor of someone else’s work, f-bombs will be flying sometime after the third or fourth hour of removing spaces. For centuries, placing two spaces after a period was common practice. Around 1940 (1950 in the UK), this started to change. Following the advent of computers and proportional fonts, the double space disappeared altogether. Today, almost all style manuals use the single space rule. There are exceptions: some professional and academic organizations allow two spaces in draft manuscripts and articles. Even those organizations usually switch to the single space rule upon public dissemination of the material. Whether one likes it or not, the double space after a period is a thing of the past. If you use it, editors, agents and other scary (scarey is also correct) people will make changes in your work. The double space after a period will soon be considered as quaint and archaic as the words thy and thou. The Mythical Split Infinitive Rule Somewhere in the collective unconscious of our culture there is a view that you must not split infinitives. Even many English teachers buy into this and tell students that they must write “to go boldly” not “to boldly go.” However, that is not a style rule, it’s erroneously morphing Latin onto English. There are no infinitives in Latin, so you can’t split them. But English has different rules than Latin, Irish, Mandarin and other languages. This “thou shalt not split infinitives” view had a lot of steam in the Victorian Era and some grammarians from about 1850 to 1925 frowned on it. It never really applied to the English language, and it certainly doesn’t apply today. Go ahead in your voyage to valiantly split infinitives. Hosted by: Serial Killers In general, there is standard agreement on uses of the comma. But for serious disagreement, drag up the Oxford (serial) comma. 809 Salem Rd, Stirling-Rawdon What do you do in a series like red, white and blue? To many writers (and all news media), placing “and” and “,” together forms a redundancy. But to old school writers, leaving out 300 exhibitors of agricultural technology and services, that last (Oxford) comma is lazy and improper. Writers in the book woodlot info and demos, crafts, family program, antiques, world, science and academia still use it. This is evolving quickly. Queen of the Furrow and enterainment Many writers and editors of books and magazines are leaving out that last comma. I try to tell writers to consider it an ampersand rule. You are what you speak Modifiers Here’s a rule for improving your writing: omit adverbs and adjectives. Use stronger nouns and verbs. Do a word search for “very” in everything you write. Eliminate the word. It’s meaningless. The same goes for other adjectives and adverbs. Expand your vocabulary. I’ll include the exclamation point (!) in this discussion of modifiers. I recently edited an article that contained 36 of these little buggers. Trust me; you lose the effectiveness of your writing if every sentence ends with “!”. I’ll think you’re screaming, you’re on medication or you forgot your medication. Here’s a good rule: if there is more than one exclamation point in a chapter, there are too many. Clichés Avoid the use of cliché phrases. For example, when someone tells me they’re “thinking outside the box,” they’re showing that they’re not, because that cliché is so deeply inside the box. Idiosyncrasies There are regional dialects and style idiosyncrasies.

I grew up and learned to spell in New York State, so I can jokingly say that my natural tendency in writing is more ecologically-conscious than that in Canada, my country of birth. I spell words like honor and color without the “u” and, therefore, I use less ink and less paper, thereby killing fewer trees. Stylistically, Canada is stuck somewhere between continents. Our spelling of things like honour and colour reflects an adherence to British style, yet our punctuation is distinctly American. Dr. Jones, not Dr Jones, prescribes medication. A few years back I was doing some work in Kentucky. I’d had dinner with an interesting fellow, and later we went to a camera shop to buy some supplies. This eloquent and refined gentleman asked the clerk: “How much is y’all’s film?” The South has its own beautiful charm. have been ended effectively with prepositions for centuries. It’s really a caste/class distinction and not a style rule. The Chicago Manual of Style goes so far as to say, “The ‘rule’ prohibiting terminal prepositions was an ill-founded superstition.” The same is true for starting a sentence with a conjunction. It can be effective to begin with and or but. There’s a great discussion of this in the movie Finding Forrester. Then there are brilliant writers who have thrown all punctuation to the wind. James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake is a classic example. I’ll end this column with one of my favorite punctuation quotes. It comes from comedian Lewis Black: “In my city (New York) f*** isn’t a word, it’s a comma.” To become a better writer, pick up the recommended style books. Mark Bergin on Twitter @ markaidanbergin.

Staying on two wheels: tips to avoid bike theft By Braden Dragomir Reporter

Gazette News - It might be the most gut-wrenching feeling to a cyclist - walking toward where you locked up your bike only to see a cut lock lying on the ground. The worst part is it can really happen to anyone. “Bicycle thefts have always been an issue regardless of where you’re living, whether it’s Kingston or elsewhere,” says Constable Steve Koopman. “We obviously have a community that likes to be bike friendly.” Even though the city is taking

strides to make cycling safer on the road, hundreds of bikes are being taken every year. It is such a common occurrence that twice a year the Kingston Police Force auctions off hundreds of unclaimed bikes that they have recovered. “I think people would be surprised, and we see this [the Bicycle Intake Area] fill up over the course of the year. We have two auctions a year, so literally twice a year we see that cage reach capacity, so it just shows you how often bikes get stolen or just go missing.” While many go unclaimed,

Koopman says about once a week someone successfully identifies their bicycle and are able to take it home. The easiest way to claim your bike, or report it stolen, is to make sure you record the serial number from the frame of the bike. Depending on the manufacture, it can be located on the base of the frame near where the pedals are installed, or along the down shaft under the seat. Koopman says make sure to use the serial number from the frame because most of the other pieces of a bike can be easily replaced. “The first thing you should do

when you get a new bike, even before getting on it, is you should be taking photos of your bicycle, recording some of the details of it, and most importantly you want to record that serial number.” In some instances bikes have been recovered without a serial number by using some very clear identifying marks or additions to the bike, but Koopman says the process is much harder. Beyond having the serial number, there are a few tricks like purchasing a GPS that you can put in the frame of your bike, or sticking a business card in the handlebars that gives police an easy way to know the bike is yours. It is not only having your bike stolen that can be a concern though. Buying a used bike could get you into trouble if that bike is stolen. Even if you weren’t the thief, you can still be charged with possession of stolen property for willful negligence. Officers, when pulling over a

bike or recovering stolen property, will run serial numbers through the federal database called the Canadian Police Information Centre, or CPIC. The database, located online at www.cpic-cipc.ca, can also be used by the general public. “Do your research, ask questions and if you can get the serial number from the person selling on Kijiji or Ebay, or even here within the city, then you can run that to see if that bike has been listed as stolen,” says Koopman. If the seller doesn’t have the answers you’re looking for, or they will not provide you with a serial number, police advise it is best not to purchase that bike, and you can even report the suspicious activity to police. While having your bike stolen might make for a lousy day, you are better off taking the steps to make sure that if police do recover it, that it comes back to you instead of being auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Daytripper

By Mark Bergin Columnist

Daytripper - Beware, pirates lurk. As long as there has been transportation on water, piracy has existed. Long John Silver, made famous in the Disney’s Treasure Island movie, was purely fictional, created by the pen of Robert Louis Stevenson. Regardless, he became a prototype for the pirate image in many modern stories. Alexandria Bay’s Bill Johnston’s Pirate Days will celebrate the exploits of the former Thousand Islands pirate. Fear not, there’ll be no pillaging. It’s all in fun during the Aug. 8–17 festival across the waters of the border with our American neighbor. There was certainly financial incentive to piracy in the past. An individual pirate’s share from a successful raid in the 17th century could have been £1000. That’s more than $1 million in today’s terms. As for that earring you often see in images of pirates, it was believed that the value of the gold would pay for a burial if the pirate died at sea and washed ashore. In reality, decomposition of the corpse would likely have sent the earring to the bottom of the ocean. The earring would also have been a detriment during any close contact fighting. The buried treasure stories are more myth than fact. If you won $1 million, would you bury it in some secluded location? Same for pirates. They were more likely to put the loot to use. Some pirates, like Francis Drake, William Kidd (Captain Kidd) and Henry Morgan, were British officers who turned bad. However, Drake operated with the support of his homeland, so I’m not sure he could be classified as a pirate. The Vikings from Scandinavia had the earliest large-scale organized system of piracy. During Medieval times, the Vikings would attack on seas, rivers and land. So widespread were the Viking attacks that some countries were settled and actually improved by the Scandinavians. Many of Ireland’s ports, including Dublin, were developed by the Vikings. Irish pirates, along with Scots, Welsh and Picts, teamed with the Vikings in early invasions of England. One of Ireland’s most famous pirates was Grace O’Malley, a woman feared by many but beloved in Ireland, where she is known as the Irish Pirate Queen. She travelled under a white seahorse flag. Her family ruled a large area of Ireland’s west coast. A protector of her people’s land, she never hesitated to go after British ships passing through her clan’s waters without paying the required duty. Pirates from the New England states favoured attacks on Spanish colonies. Other famous pirates include the British buccaneers who controlled much of the Caribbean during the 17th and early 18th centuries. Disney studios and Johnny Depp made this group famous in the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series. As commercial shipping among Africa, the Caribbean, Europe and the Americas blossomed in the 18th century, so did piracy. At the same time, river piracy flourished, especially along great waterways like the Ohio River and the Mississippi. After England’s passage of the Piracy Act in 1698, more than 600 pirates were executed in the following century. By the early 1800s, more than 200 Royal Navy warships were used to track and defeat pirates. Blackbeard (Edward Teach) was killed off the coast of North Carolina in 1718. In 1722, the previously invincible Bartholomew Roberts was killed at Cape Lopez off the west coast of Africa. During the 19th century, the likes of Jean Lafitte roamed American and Caribbean waters. Cuba became a safe haven. Conflicts like the War of 1812 occupied British and American ships with more urgent matters, allowing pirates to once again briefly flourish. Some pirates remained loyal to their home bases. In addition to Jean Lafitte’s buccaneers roaming the Gulf of Mexico, they also took part in the Battle of New Orleans, fighting against the British during the War of 1812. Many pirates have been romanticized. Great Lakes Rum calls one of its offerings Roaring Dan’s Rum. As late as the 20th century, Roaring Dan Seavey led pirates in raids on the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Michigan. But there was nothing noble about Seavey. Not only would he steal cargo from vessels and storage depots, he promoted an illegal sex trade and sex trafficking, kidnapping women from lakeside towns and selling them into prostitution. As long as there is commercial shipping on waterways, there will be piracy. Today, most piracy occurs between the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, near Singapore, in the South China Sea and off the Somali coast. Increasingly, regular attacks occur around Serbia and Romania and along the Danube

River. There have been thousands of pirate attacks around the world over the past decade. Attackers favor the crew’s personal belongings and the ship’s safe, often carrying large amounts of cash. Piracy reportedly costs the shipping industry billions of dollars annually. True pirates of the past rarely killed anyone. Pirates didn’t want their victims to fight back. Crews, knowing that their lives would be spared if they surrendered, more readily gave up resistance. Perhaps therein lies the appeal of pirates. They were stealing from wealthy individuals and companies, sparing the staff. In Kingston and the surrounding regions, these days we’re safe from the pillaging of pirates, aside from those found in places like Queen’s Park and Ontario Hydro. The most famous of the 1000 Islands pirates of the past was Bill Johnston (also spelled Bill Johnson in official records). His biggest conquest was the 1838 capture and sinking of a British ship, the Sir Robert Peel, during the Patriot War. After boarding the ship, the pirates ordered the passengers and crew to shore. The pirates reportedly scored £20,000 of militia payroll, then torched and fled the vessel. Within days, 13 men were captured and charged for the assault on the ship, but none of them were ever convicted. The remnants of the sunken hull remain and have become a popular underwater destination for divers. Johnston was hunted by both U.S. and Canadian authorities. The annual Bill Johnston’s Pirate Days celebration in Alexandria Bay commemorates some of his exploits. Johnston was captured and imprisoned on more than one occasion, but he always escaped. Somehow, he managed to return to regular life (without any official pardon). He was appointed keeper of the Rock Island lighthouse in the Thousand Islands, not far from the wreck of the Sir Robert Peel. He held that patronage position from April 1853 to April 1861. But don’t get too complacent, nearby streets could fill with swords at any time, especially during Pirate Days. A sword-fighting group, the Tales from Remikreh, will perform throughout the Village. During the festival, renegade sailors will dock their ships in Alexandria Bay at the Park Pavilion Dock. The pirates will then attack the village (the real Bill Johnston never did this) at 2 p.m. on each of the days of the weekends during the festival. Brave villagers will attempt to stave them off. Muskets will blast and cannons roar in the villagers’ futile battle. Finally, the town surrenders and the mayor gives the key to the village to the pirates. 1 TON OF PeLLeTS All inhabitants become pirates for a WITH PURCHASe OF ANY day. Young artist hones her craft through choreography By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca

Heritage news - Maureen Barnes has been a triple threat performer for a number of years now, and many local theatregoers have seen her acting, singing and dancing in various productions on stages all over Kingston. Now, the 16-year-old Regiopolis Notre Dame student can add another title to her resume: choreographer – and an increasingly in demand one at that. It all started last year with Bottletree Productions’ A Midsummer Night’s Dream, in which Maureen played one of the fairies. “There was a ballet number for the fairies in that show, and it didn’t have choreo for a long time,” she says. “So I suggested that because I’m a ballerina I could choreograph it, and they said sure.” She explains that the right choreography can add a real sense of vitality and excitement to a show. “A show without choreography would be dull. You wouldn’t get the same kind of pleasure you get from watching a musical if [the actors] were just standing and singing. Dancing adds a kind of magic to the show.” Maureen enjoyed the work, and saw another opportunity in Bottletree’s next show, The Sound of Music. “I couldn’t be in it because I was in my school show (Guys and Dolls), but I still wanted to be a part of it so I asked if I could help with the choreography and they said yes.” Several months later, the folks at Bottletree asked Maureen to come back once again to choreograph their production of Beauty and the Beast. More recently, she was asked by local director Laurie Pacheco to choreograph her musical Working, which ran at The Domino Theatre July 24 – 26. Based on Studs Terkel’s best-selling book, Working explores the life of working people in America, touching on everything from the Monday morning blues to a working person’s pride. Maureen describes the style of dance in Working as “typical Broadway jazz,” noting that the show was performed in New York City for quite some time. “I want the dance numbers to convey that although the workers might not be

as privileged as other people, they’re still very proud of their jobs and they still have a very good time and love their life even though they might be working as a cleaner,” she explains. How does one go about choreographing a musical? “I start off by listening to the songs and I try to visualize the choreography,” Maureen says. “If I’m lacking ideas, I YouTube some choreo or I take choreo from dances that I’ve been in and I add that to what I’m visualizing.” Maureen has learned that working closely with the actors and being flexible are key aspects of the process. “I go to play practice and I give them the moves. If they struggle with them or don’t like the moves or if it looks awkward, I change it and I give them something else on the spot. If it looks good, I go with that. And the actors suggest ideas sometimes…I like making sure the actors are comfortable so I take the ideas.” So what’s next for the young artist? “I hope to continue choreographing and possibly help out with the choreo for my school show (Pirates of Penzance),” says Maureen, adding that she also has her eye on the Meistersingers’ upcoming production of Anne of Green Gables. All the same, her heart still belongs to her first love: performance. “I really enjoy choreographing because it gives me another outlook on theatre, but there’s nothing like being on the stage,” she says, adding that one of the best things about her experience as a choreographer is how it’s allowing her to grow as a performer. “It’s taught me how to work with people [more effectively] and how to communicate. Now when I do theatre, I really appreciate the choreographer and everyone who works backstage more.” Maureen’s advice to other young people who yearn to get involved in choreography or other aspects of theatre: jump at every opportunity. “A lot of people think they can’t do things but really if you’re determined enough, you can. Look out for upcoming theatre shows and to put your name out there. If you’re interested in choreographing a show then just apply.”

Frontenac Islands confirms community meeting dates for township Correspondent

EMC news- Frontenac Islands Mayor Denis Doyle made the point at the July council meeting that “it is good to set meeting dates with the community when summer residents are here on the islands.” And two community meetings ARE planned with Frontenac County Community Planner Peter Young, to discuss the Townships Zoning ByLaw Update and Mapping along with other issues relevant to each of Howe and Wolfe islands According to Planner Young, the Township is proposing to amend its Zoning By-law to improve the mapping in the bylaw, make technical corrections to the by-law, and to implement Official Plan setbacks from water bodies and wetlands. “The Township will also be asking residents how it can improve the by-law in the future, and follow up with a formal public report at the September Council Meeting,” he said. Meeting dates regarding the Township’s Zoning By Law Update and Mapping along with other issues relevant to each of Howe and Wolfe islands have been confirmed. The Howe Island community meeting will be held Thursday

August 21st at 5:30 pm , and will precede the Howe Island Ratepayers AGM. The Wolfe Island meeting date is Thursday Aug. 14th Sacred Heart School at 6:30 pm. AECOM’s Guy Laporte will also join Planner Young to bring the community up to date about WI’s Landfill site and its future. Auditor’s Report:

The auditor’s for the township reported on the 2013 year financial results. Vicki Leakey, CPA, CA, of the firm KPMG stated that they were able to provide a ‘clean’ audit report, meaning there were no major issues, and all information requested was provided to them. She noted that the taxes receivable at year end of $415,000 had increased by 10% from the prior year. Since the township issues tax bills for some $3.2 million, but remits nearly $2 millions to the county and school boards, it means that this amount was a cash shortfall on the township taxes. Thus the township has to use reserve funds to make up the difference. In the notes to the statements she identified the reserves set aside for specific purposes totalling $3.2 millions for such as dollars for the closing of the waste disposal site, the funds committed to the arena roof, roads, ferries, recreation, and

wind investment, etc. She reported that the repair and replacement of the capital assets of the township, mostly roads and equipment, is a concern as the amortization (depreciation) exceeded the additions made last year. This apparently is common throughout the province. Auditor Leakie extended thanks to staff for their good work and cooperation throughout the process. By-Law Deferrals:

A by-law prescribing regulations for fences and gates around privately outdoor pools and another by-law respecting construction, demolition, change of use, permits and inspection were deferred to the September meeting of council. Motorcycles:

Frontenac Islands has submitted a request to MTO that four spaces be designated at the front of the ferry line up for motorcycles, and that the first four park there, and all others line up with the cars. The township is further requesting that the motorcycles be loaded first and parked in each corner below the stairs, in space not useful for cars. MTO made changes to how motorcycles are now being loaded, causing consternation to islanders who have

Was your wedding one that should be featured in a magazine?

chosen bicycles and motorcycles as their mode of travel to make space available for automobiles, but with the new line up procedure behind cars, they are often left behind and the space not used. Under other business the question of enforcing Municipal Bylaw’s/Trailers was on the agenda. However the lateness of the evening allowed little time for discussion and members need time to refresh memory’s and to determine whether they have been lax about it. Township newsletter:

A newsletter will be included with the next tax bill in August. Council meets next: Howe Island, Mon. Aug. 11th. Around Town:
