Central Frontenac awarded $110,000 grant for new library in Mountain Grove By Craig Bakay Reporter

News — A $110,000-grant from the federal Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program for a new library/community centre in Mountain Grove came as a bit of a surprise, but even though Central Frontenac will have to come up with matching funds, it’s a challenge Mayor Frances Smith welcomes. Lanark-Frontenac-Lennox & Addington MP Scott Reid made the announcement last week, just before Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the announcement of a federal election for Oct. 19. “The vibrant and growing community of Mountain Grove will benefit greatly with a new community centre and library, and I am very happy that they received all the funding they requested,” said Reid. The announcement also marked the largest amount of funding awarded in the LFL&A riding from the Canada 150 Program. North Frontenac was also awarded $23,000 to renovate the Snow Road Community Centre. “Now we’ll have to find the money but we have some time because under the program, the project can’t start until April of 2016 but must start before March 31 of 2018,” said Smith. “But we’ll find the money because you have to take advantage of these kinds of grants when they become available.” A new library for Mountain Grove was a major project for the previous Central Frontenac Council,

with then Coun. Norm Guntensperger leading the proponents’ effort. When the current Council took over this year, it was moved to the back burner somewhat but then CAO Jim Zimmerman was given the green light to apply for funding. Now that the funding is forthcoming, the original plan of adding 1,000 square feet to the Fire Hall in Mountain Grove can move forward, albeit not in the immediate future as resources are geared towards the Parham Fire Hall/Library project. “It (the Mountain Grove project) will be more of a library than a community centre because we do have the hall in Mountain Grove,” Smith said. “But there will be a meeting room in the new building that people can use.” Smith said this could be a good opportunity to partner with other organizations. “First, I’m going to have to sell the (KingstonFrontenac) Library Board on 1,000 square feet but I believe that’s doable,” she said. “Then, we’ll talk to the School Board to see if they want to become involved. “The existing fire hall is adjacent to the school which means the students can easily access it without having to cross a road.” However they go about it, there is another major incentive for Central Frontenac Council to get a new library in place in Mountain Grove. The current library is housed in the old Olden Township offices, which is an old building that the current Township would dearly love to close. “That old building is costing us $10,000 a year to heat,” Smith said.

News — It would appear that South Frontenac Township has become a popular destination for companies wanting to put up solar energy operations. And at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham, South Frontenac Council said gave its endorsement to one such project while flatly refusing another (due to timing concerns). Council did approve a motion showing its support for the Bondfield Solar Project, which is located on McAdoo and McCallum Roads in Storrington District. Bondfield hosted a public meeting at Storrington Lions Hall July 29 in which members of the public were offered the opportunity of signing up to appear as a delegation at a Council meeting should they wish to voice concerns on the proposal. No one signed up. However a similar proposal by Canadian Solar didn’t get Council’s blessings. Under the provisions for granting licenses to construct solar projects, the Ontario Government set up a formula for companies wanting to construct and operate such proposals. One such provision is that weight is given to proposals that receive the endorsement of the municipality in which the operation will reside. The deadline for submitting an application to the Province is Sept. 1 and usually involves the company holding a public meeting in the municipality before receiving the municipality’s endorsement. But Canadian Solar has held no such public

meetings before coming to Council. “I’m looking for input from Councilors here,” said Mayor Ron Vandewal. “Where is this going? “I can’t support it.” “We’ve had four projects which I could support but this one didn’t make a timeline,” said Coun. Ross Sutherland. “It feels rushed.” “We are a bit behind on this one but one thing we do have that others don’t is resources,” said Tyler Balding, director of project business development for Canadian Solar. “I agree with the mayor,” said Coun. Ron Sleeth. “This is too much of a significant impact on the area.” “What impact?” said Balding. “Would you want to live next to one of these?” replied Sleeth. “I feel the benefits for our society far outweigh any negatives,” replied Balding. “The name of the street is Homes Road (sic, actually spelled Holmes),” said Coun. Norm Roberts. “I’m not in favour.” “It takes a lot of time for one of these projects,” said Dep. Mayor John McDougall. “And we don’t have the time on this one.” “You can still hold a meeting if you want to and submit the project without our support if you want to,” said Vandewal. “Maybe in the next round you can come back to us and we’ll look at it, but not now.” Council also approved a smaller scale project from Sol Forces on Sumac Road. CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr explained that the deadline for “garden solar” projects has been extended and so Council could discuss it.

Hartington subdivision proposal scaled back to 13 units from 47 By Craig Bakay Reporter

TICO#50007364

News — A proposed subdivision for the Hartington area has been scaled down to 13 units from the previous 47, South Frontenac Council heard at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. Representing the developer, planner Mike Keene from Fotenn Consulting told Council that they are acknowledging the public’s concern and are now focusing development within the hamlet of Hartington boundaries, which the South Frontenac Official Plan and Provincial policy recognizes as the most desirable for such development. “We will continue to work with Council and the public on the development of the remainder of the lot,” he said. “We are requesting that Council make a decision based on the revised submission. “We are not going to stop on the southern portion but we want to work with this Council.” Under the new proposal, the 13 lots constitute the north part of the property, with a new road going south from Boyce Road. Each of the new lots are a minimum of 0.8 hectares (two acres) with a 20-metre front yard setback and a six-metre side yard setback which complies with the rural zoning designation. The frontage, at 46-metres, is less than the Township minimum of 76 metres, but Keene said there are “10 other subdivisions in the Township where the road frontage is 46 metres or less, which set a precedent for development.” Coun. Ron Sleeth was unconvinced the new pro-

posal was a good idea. “I don’t see any new information on water,” Sleeth said. “It’s paramount in my mind and has been for 100 years.” “I’m not sure what more we can do,” replied Keene. “We have comments from Malroz Engineering, which was peer reviewed, and comments from Quinte Conservation. “We’d be pleased to provide more if we knew what to provide.” Keene said they intended to keep their promise of doing additional hydro-geological studies as the development proceeds to satisfy concerns over water supply. Coun. Alan Revill also had concerns. “I’m troubled with water and I’m still troubled with your frontage,” Revill said. “There are 10 subdivisions (in South Frontenac) with frontages under 50 metres,” Keene replied. “There’s one in Sydenham that’s under 20 metres.” Dep. Mayor John McDougall was also concerned about precedents, fearing that once the 13 units were in, that could be construed as precedent for the next 34, but Mayor Ron Vandewal said no. “I don’t think that sets a precedent,” Vandewal said. “Besides, the 13 lots come under the provincial policy statement directing development to within hamlet boundaries. “If they want to come back for the remainder of the development, they start over.” Council agreed to vote on the new proposal at its first meeting in September.

News — The peer review conducted by McIntosh Perry of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the proposed Johnston Point subdivision development questions the EIA’s conclusion that there would be no negative impacts on the natural features and/or wildlife, South Frontenac Council heard at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. “It is the opinion of McIntosh Perry that the EIA report does not sufficiently demonstrate there will be no negative impacts on the natural features or their ecological functions on the subject property as per the requirements of the Provincial Policy Statement,” said Jeffrey King, senior biologist in his report of the peer review conducted June 11, 2015. “At a minimum, the proposed development has the potential to result in long-term negative impacts to Blanding’s Turtle, Snapping Turtle and Gray Ratsnake . . . it is strongly recommended that the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry be consulted prior to any further site alteration to ensure proposed development does not contravene the Endangered Species Act and its associated regulations and obtain any necessary approvals or permits required to undertake activities that have the potential for adverse impacts to species at risk and their habitat.” Representing the developers, planner Mike Keene asked Council to wait for a response they were drafting before making any decisions. “We will address every point in the McIntosh Perry review to the satisfaction of the Cataraqui Conservation Authority and the Township,” Keene

said. “I am confident that when you see our response, you will be in a position to approve the draft development.” Council didn’t wait for the response, instructing staff to contact the MNRF for comments. ••• Since summer hours seem to be a hit with the union and managers, South Frontenac CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr asked Council to make them permanent at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. So, instead of changing back come September, municipal office hours in South Frontenac will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. ••• South Frontenac Council approved a tender of $1.28 million to lowest bidder Crains Construction for new sidewalks and some other improvements in the hamlet of Bellrock. “It’s safe to say all the residents aren’t embracing this but sidewalks will improve things and Bellrock doesn’t drain very well,” said Public Works Manager Mark Segsworth. “I think on the whole the community is behind this and it will improve the look of Bellrock,” said Dep. Mayor John McDougall. “I concur,” said Mayor Ron Vandewal. “I was at all the meetings and I think by the end the majority was for it.” ••• South Frontenac Council passed a bylaw bringing its Off Road Vehicles bylaw “to bring it in line with new Provincial regulations.” Under the bylaw, off road vehicles are permitted on municipal roads provided they are operated in accordance with Ministry regulations.

Editorial Study shows that studies aren’t all the factual be-all/end-alls most claim to be Craig Bakay Reporter

editorial@theheritageemc.ca

Column — When the editor-in-chief of The Lancet (arguably the medical profession’s most respected journal) Dr. Richard Horton, comes out and says “the case against science is straightforward: much of the scientific literature, perhaps half, may be simply untrue,” we really should start thinking about the way we, as a species, go about things. He continued by saying “Afflicted by studies with small sample sizes, tiny effects, invalid exploratory analyses, and flagrant conflicts of interest, together with an obsession for pursuing fashionable trends of dubious importance, science has taken a turn towards darkness.” And we in the journalism profession are among the worst offenders when it comes to propagating this reprehensible behaviour. We (not us here at The Gazette of course) just love to print things like “scientists agree” or “study shows”

without any real analysis of who the hell these scientists are or what they’re studying. Of course, very few journalists come from any sort of a scientific background whatsoever. I did but I think I’m the only one I’ve ever worked with. And here’s the thing, just because somebody goes through the motions and comes out of university with a degree in science doesn’t mean they’re any good at it. Getting a B in Biology 20 isn’t that tough and sadly, you don’t need that many Bs to graduate; in most cases a bunch of Cs will get you through. If every study were conducted by the top PhDs in every field of science then it might be a different story. But the sad fact is that an awful lot of studies are conducted by people that really have no business doing them in the first place. As if that weren’t bad enough, there’s just all sorts of incentive to fudge results, and for a variety of reasons. It may be enough for some to doctor their findings just to get attention. At the other end of the scale, large corporations, government bodies, and/

Kanata Kourier-Standard

Kanata Kourier-Standard Arnprior Chronicle-Guide

or special interest groups can (and do) pay ridiculous amounts of money to have a ‘study’ come out in their favour. Or, if you’re a federal government, you can simply muzzle and scientist on the government payroll if they conclude something you don’t want known. Any everybody has their price, even scientists. There’s an old adage ‘publish or perish’ among higher academic types. And while some studies are done for all the right reasons and with all the proper care given, it’s a fact of life that many are also done just to raise funds for other research and/or to pay the bills. It’s amazing how principles can go out the window if there are a significant number of zeros on a cheque. Now of course this doesn’t mean we should stop doing studies or worse yet, discount science as corrupt and incompetent. But it does mean that we need to be a little more conscientious about what we take as fact. In other words, the next time you see the words “study shows,” take it with a grain of salt.

ALL THE NEWS THAT’S Arnprior Chronicle-Guide West Carleton Review

In Our Opinion

Oct. 19 is sooner than you think

It’s official. The writ has dropped. Canadians are gearing up for the longest, and what will likely be the most expensive election campaign in the country’s history. The attack ads will undoubtedly drone on trying to convince us that Trudeau’s an inexperienced pretty boy; Mulcair’s a hot-headed opportunist; and Harper is an eco-super villain. The signs will continue to pop up on every lawn and street corner, spurring heated debates between neighbours. We implore you, however, not to let it get to you; try to fight the election fatigue. Take this extra time to inform yourself and really engage with the issues before going to the polls on Oct. 19. Follow the debates, get on the Google and know all the ins and the outs of each of the different party platforms. Hold your leaders and MP candidates to a high standard of honestly and integrity. It should also be noted here that you won’t be getting your usual reminders from Elections Canada to go out and vote. The current government did away with those public service announcements with the ‘Fair Elections Act’, so consider this a friendly reminder from the fifth estate to get out there and make your voice heard. You don’t have to agree with every position a party holds – just make sure that you cast your vote for the one that best represents your interests. And, if you don’t think your vote can make a difference, we invite you to consider just how different the country is from the last time we went to the polls together. Agree with the direction or not, it certainly cannot be denied that the country’s political climate has shifted dramatically from just five years ago. We at the Heritage/Gazette would also like to know what your questions are for your local political candidates. In the weeks leading up to the election, we will be asking each candidate in the three ridings our papers serve a series of questions, to be answered in their own words, and we’re looking for input from readers as to what these questions should be. You can send your questions to hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca, or send us a message over social media. Fire away!

Liberal candidate hopes to give a new voice to a new riding

Let’s connect on Facebook!

“The current government is really shortsighted when it comes to these issues of healthcare. The population in our riding really needs the help and they feel that they are underrepresented.” As MP, Archambault would also focus on building business within the riding and attracting younger professionals, something he feels is not a current priority. “We need to work hard to create jobs and attract businesses,” he said. “I know this can be a challenge in such a large, rural area, but that just means more effort needs to be made and I feel that I could put in that effort.” Philippe Archambault is the Liberal party candidate The geographical size of the riding for MP in the Lanark, Frontenac and Kingston has certainly been a challenge in cam- riding. Photo/Submitted. paigning too, but Archambault feels that he has a handle on the area and he hopes to knock on a lot of doors in the coming weeks. “You have to be committed to represent the people and you have to care. I genuinely believe that I can make a difTankless Home ference in the riding and I hope that this is apparent when I knock on doors and HeaTing sysTem meet people.” For more information about Philippe With a thermal efficiency Archambault and his campaign visit R0012769012

News – Philippe Archambault may be new to politics, but he is hoping that makes him an appealing candidate for MP in the Lanark, Frontenac and Kingston riding. “I moved to South Frontenac with my family five years ago and since then I’ve been very involved with the Liberal party working with both John Gerretsen and Sophie Kiwala. This seemed like a good next step,” said Archambault. Archambault competed against Phil Somers for the nomination in the newly designated Lanark, Frontenac and Kingston riding and despite Somers’ considerably longer campaign, Archambault came out on top. “I knocked on a lot of doors and signed up new members and I became the official candidate,” he said. “I think I represent the average family man – I have four children and I am very concerned about the well-being of my family and all the families in the riding and I think that comes across when I meet people.” Archambault has a business background and completed his MBA in the U.K., where he lived for a number of years with his wife. He worked as a management consultant for a period of time before finding employment within the healthcare sector. Now, Archam-

bault is working for Providence Care and focusing on integrating their current facilities into their new, soon to be completed facility. “I do a lot of work with business processes and organization and assess how to move forward,” he explained. “I specialize in finding efficiencies and finding the best way to do things and I think that will work well for me going forward as an MP. I would be striving for efficiencies and improving things for people based on analysis.” Archambault feels that efficiency and working for the people in the riding are two things that have been neglected by the current MP and he hopes to fix that if he is elected. “I don’t think that the current MP has been pulling his sleeves up and getting down to the roots of the issues in the riding,” he said. “We have big issues with affordable housing and issues with healthcare in the area and I think those should be a main focus.” The Lanark, Frontenac and Kingston riding has a large senior population and Archambault feels that more should be done to ensure that their healthcare needs are being met and that they have the ability to have home health care if they choose to. “We should be working towards making it easier for the elderly to stay in their homes and introducing new technologies to make that possible,” he said.

Over the coming weeks, the Kingston Heritage and Frontenac Gazette will profile all candidates in the LanarkFrontenac-Kingston riding.

LaSalle Auto Body takes care of all your collision needs All motorists have been there, the screeching of breaks and sound of crumbling metal. A fender-bender or major accident has left their new and shiny car with a dent, or worse, a crumpled mess. The choice now is picking the right body shop to do the repairs, letting them work their magic, turning your crumpled mess into a new looking vehicle with glittering paint and perfect body contours. Whether your vehicle needs minor or severe work, you can trust LaSalle Auto Body’s team of experts to have your vehicle looking brand new in no time at all. Operating since 1976, John and Jenna Veley purchased the business, located at 680 Development Drive, in March 2015. John has been working in the industry

for 16 years, first as a part of a high school co-op placement, then a full apprenticeship. Today, John and Jenna employ a staff of five skilled restorers and operate their own shop with three huge bays which can store up to a dozen vehicles LaSalle Auto Body uses only PPG waterborne paint in all their work, everything from detailing (waxing, buffing etc) to hard hit collision jobs, as well as restorations. “We work a lot with dealerships in Kingston as well as insurance companies,” says Jenna. “I think what sets us apart from the competition is that we have been around for so long. People know our location and name. We have been in the same spot for years.” They are one of the only shops that do

not cut corners, treating your vehicle as if it was their own. “We want to do it right the first time so we have happy customers. Word of mouth is what keeps our doors open.” The Veley’s and their staff take great pride in their work and in fostering good relationships with their clients. “We are always willing to work with our customers,” adds Jenna who recommends that all customers get multiple quotes before any work is done. “And remember you get what you pay for.” Next time you are in need of some body work give LaSalle Auto Body a call at 613389-4949, or email them at lasalleautobody@bellnet.ca. They will get you back on the road quickly.

News – With warmer weather comes barbecuing and while many people

plan, a Kingstonian, business student at Bishop’s University and a participant in KEDCO’s Summer Company program for 2015. “I took an entrepreneurship course

at school and really took a liking to it; then I heard about Summer Company and thought it would be an awesome opportunity,” explained Kaplan. “I filled out the application, submitted my business plan and I was lucky enough to get accepted.” The idea for Kingston BBQ Cleaning came from Kaplan’s own experience; he offered to clean his parents’ BBQ one day and his mother was so happy with the job he did she commented that it looked like she had paid someone to do it. “I figured if it was a service she felt she would pay someone to do then other people would too,” explained Kaplan. “It turns out I am the first and only business to offer the service in Kingston and business has been increasing steadily.”

Kaplan offers onsite BBQ cleaning for a variety of grills and units. Cleaning takes about an hour. Kaplan serves the Kingston area, but is willing to travel for a small fee. The service starts at $40 per cleaning, but free quotes are available. “I also sell BBQ brushes, sauces, replacement grills, grill covers and more aesthetic accessories,” said Kaplan. “I wanted to expand my range of services and products to things that would interest my customers.” Over the course of the summer, Kaplan has also received help and guidance from his mentor, John Henderson, owner of Henderson Total Maintenance in Kingston. The company specializes in carpet, window and floor cleaning. Continued on page 13

Experience worth more than the start-up money for Summer Company participant “John has been incredibly helpful throughout the whole creation of my business,” said Kaplan. “He had a vision for my company that I didn’t see originally. He has been really helpful and encouraging me to go further and work harder.” Henderson has been working with Summer Company students for the past six years and he sees the experience as a way to give back to the community. “I’ve been in business for 25 years now. I had a friend help me out many years ago and I think it is the right thing to do the same for others,” said Henderson. “I get excited when I work with these students and it rejuvenates me a bit too it makes me remember my early days and how exciting everything was.” Henderson has pushed Kaplan to attend festivals in Kingston, to hand out coupons for his services and even set up a partnership between Kaplan and a local butcher to hand out coupons with meat purchases. “I think he has a great business here and I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t think that it is a great idea,” said Henderson. “Nobody likes to clean something like their barbecue. It is like getting your car fixed, the only time you think about it is when it is broken.” For Kaplan, the experience had been invaluable and he hopes to continue with Kingston

BBQ cleaning for months and years to come. “Everyone focuses on the monetary aspect of the program and the fact that we all get money to start our business, but for me the learning experience and training is more valuable than the

money,” he said. “This experience allowed me to see the potential of this business and maybe the potential for a career.” For more information about Kingston BBQ cleaning visit www.kingstonbbqcleaning.com

out a new group of people who will audition.” If you think you should be among them, you can come to Bay Park Baptist Church on Aug. 31 or Sept. 1 and show your skills. Just don’t be expecting a traditional interpretation of the musical - this version will be set in present day Las Vegas. “It seemed like a natural leap to have it go there because I don’t think [Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice] ever intended it to be the biblical story of Jesus - they intended it to be more Judas’ story,” says the show’s director Aerin Kemp. She explains that she wanted to set the show in the present day’s “centre of depravity”, and it was obvious where that should be. “They don’t call it ‘Sin City’ for nothing.” The show will also touch on modern day themes like addiction and mental health. Thank You Kingston! Another year and another successful Kingston Show N Shine Charity Event. This year we raised awareness for the Fallen Heroes and Wounded Warriors of the Military, Police, Fire and Ambulance and all funds raised were donated to Almost Home in Kingston. None of this would ever be possible without the generous support of our incredible community-minded sponsors. We would like to thank (in no particular order) Kingston Accommodation Partners and VisitKingston.ca, Downtown Kingston!, Jack Astor’s Kingston, KROCK 105.7, 93.5 Country FM, KISS 102.7, Bagot Leather Goods, Four Points by Sheraton Kingston, MetroLand Media, MY FM 99.9 Gananoque and its sister stations, PJ “Shredder” Ste Marie and Stonecold Canada, Mike St. Pierre and STP Airbrush. At press time we were still completing our accounting for the 2015 event but the ballpark amount raised for Almost Home Kingston was in the range of $7,000.00. Thank you to all that attended and once again the fact that “bikers” are a caring and giving group holds true. Please visit http://www.almosthome.on.ca/ to find out more this year’s selected charity or to make a much needed donation. Remember... Look Twice, Safe a Life. Ride safe my friends.

Kemp is excited to see what kind of talent comes out to audition at the end of the month and determine who will help turn her vision into a reality. “Meistersingers has this amazing tradition - the voices they produce are just unbelievably beautiful,” she says. “That’s part of the reason why I wanted to work with them.” Penny says that she’ll be one of the people auditioning, though she’s not shooting for a lead role. “I’ve played some lead roles in the

last couple of years and I’m kind of looking forward to maybe taking a step back and having a chorus role. It’s fun to play in the chorus because you get to be on stage a lot, so it’ll be an interesting twist for me.” That said, Penny and Kemp emphasize that there will be no shortage of roles for women in this version of JC Superstar. “If you look at casting from a traditional point of view, there’s one woman’s role [Mary Magdalene],” Penny says. “I know that Aerin’s got an interesting way that she’s thinking of casting this that will allow for some other women

to come in and have some interesting roles.” There are three lead roles to fill Judas, Jesus and Mary – and a total of 21 core roles, though Kemp says she’ll probably cast a total of 30 people with a larger chorus. Auditions will take place Monday, Aug. 31 and Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 6:30p.m-9:30p.m at Bay Park Baptist Church (775 Portsmouth Ave.). People should come prepared to sing an a cappella song of their choosing. The show will run Nov. 12 – 22 at the Octave Theatre.

Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooling Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Freezing Time: 8 hours or overnight Serves: 12 Ingredients • 4 cups (1 L) sliced Ontario Rhubarb (about 1-1/2 lb/750g) • 1 cup (250 mL) packed brown sugar • 1 orange • 1 tbsp (15 mL) cornstarch • 2 egg whites or 1/4 cup (50 mL) liquid egg whites (preferably room temperature) • 1/2 cup (125 mL) granulated sugar • Red food colouring Crust and topping: • 1 cup (250 mL) whole wheat flour • 1/2 cup (125 mL) walnut pieces • 1/4 cup (50 mL) packed brown sugar • 1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon • 1/3 cup (75 mL) butter, melted • Mint sprigs (optional)

Preparation instructions In saucepan, bring rhubarb and brown sugar to boil over medium-high heat, stirring. Reduce heat to medium; cook until rhubarb is softened to sauce consistency, 10 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, grate rind of orange and squeeze orange to yield 1/4 cup (50 mL) juice. Mix together juice, rind and cornstarch until smooth; stir into rhubarb sauce and increase heat to high and boil for 1 to 2 minutes or until thickened slightly. Transfer to bowl and let cool to room temperature OR chill in refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Crust and Topping: Meanwhile, in food processor, pulse together flour, walnuts, sugar, and cinnamon until crumbly. Add butter and pulse until combined; press 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) crumbs over bottom of 9-inch (23 cm) springform pan. Place remaining crumbs in baking pan. Bake crust and crumbs in 350°F (180°C) oven for 7 minutes or until crumbs are golden brown: remove crumbs. Bake crust for 8 minutes longer

Explosions and stunts that stagger the mind. Ultra high-tech gadgets that can only be found in spy movies, and a tight game of spy versus spy that drives it all. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation isn’t the kind of film that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It’s the kind of film that accelerates like a race car throwing you to the back of your seat. The film opens with agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) hanging off the door of a plane as it takes off, and the action actually escalates from there. The plane leads to a record shop in London, which leads to The Syndicate. At long last Ethan has proof that The Syndicate is real. Which is lousy timing because back in Washington Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin), the head of the C.I.A., has Enjoy the Ride. just shut the I.M.F. down. handedly fight off enemy agents and save the world. Jeremy Renner, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin are all very good at saving the world. For a good spy film you have to have a good villain. Sean Harris ia a great villain. Lane is ruthless, driven and convinced he’s justified. Harris nails it. Simon Pegg elevates this film to another level. Without Pegg you have a great action movie. With Pegg you have a great action movie that’s also really funny and has a lot of heart. Tom Cruise rarely disappoints on the big screen. He brings an intensity and a passion that’s undeniable. That combined with his insistance on doing all his own stunts makes these films incredible to watch. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is everything a summer blockbuster should be. Kids Safety Village comes to Kingston By Mandy Marciniak

mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca

News – Kingston’s smallest community members are learning how to drive, but luckily they aren’t taking their new skills to the street just yet. On Aug. 5, hundreds of kids visited Market Square and the Kids Mobile Safety Village, an interactive portable street layout complete with child-sized electric cars and street signs. “The village allows them to learn about roadway safety, but they also have fun doing it,” said Const. Josh Conner, Youth Programs Officer at Kingston Police. “We have our Youth In Policing Initiative (YIPI) participants working with the kids and guiding them through the course and teaching them as they go along.” The completely mobile Kids Safety Village is owned by Cobourg Police and is a regular fixture in the Cobourg community. After learning about the village, Kingston Police asked if it could travel here and together with the Cobourg and Gananoque Police forces a morning of safety and awareness events was organized. The event also allowed the police to interact with members of the community that they don’t often come into contact with. “My whole job is engaging youth and kids in Kingston and building

relationships with the community,” said Conner. “I develop programming that gets us interacting one on one with kids and hopefully it puts us in a positive light for these kids and it humanizes us to them.” Several police officers were on hand to show kids their equipment and talk to them about proper safety. Kids also had the opportunity to explore police cruisers and motorcycles ,and visit with Donovan, the police horse. The Boys and Girls Club joined in on the fun too and set up an inflatable obstacle course. “The main goal of the event is safety, but we also want to be approachable and we don’t want kids to see the police as intimidating,” said Conner. “We want to be there and we want to interact with them when we can and build relationships.” With the success of the event, Conner and the KPF are now working on getting a Kids Safety Village for Kingston. Conner hopes to apply for and receive funding for the village in the near future and he hopes that it can become a regular fixture in the city throughout the summer months. “I know that Cobourg does this with their YIPI students at the beach a couple of times a week and we’d love to do the Hundreds of kids visited the Kids Safety Village in Market Square on August 5. Photo/Mandy Marciniak same thing here in Kingston,” he said. “We have the space here in Market Square and it really is great for the kids.”

1930 Model A Ford driven 100,000 miles since 1999! Norm Grant of Trenton, Ontario, belongs to the Model A Owners of Canada Inc. (http://www. modelaowners.com). In 1999, he purchased his 1930 Model A Ford Tudor, a dependable fun car to commute to work (60 miles a day) and something he could work on himself: “I installed signal lights and halogen headlights for safety. I learned how to shift gears and in 1999 I drove 10,268 miles. The next year, the motor was rebuilt, and after only 60 miles, I broke a new connecting rod and lost some driving time. With the new motor, I drove 9,609 miles in 2001. In 2002 I added another 8,476 miles and I passed the 25,000-mile mark. “In 1932, a Model A was driven from Toronto to Vancouver in 96.25 hours. Our 24-year-old son James and I decided to duplicate the trip and see if we could break the record. On June 10, 2004, we departed Toronto City Hall at 11 p.m. We replaced a burnt exhaust valve in Manitoba

and reached Vancouver City Hall at 2 p.m. on June 14, exactly 87 hours after leaving Toronto. By the end of 2004, I passed the 50,000-mile mark. “In 2007 we drove our Model A with three other A’s to the Yukon. I rebuilt the motor before the tour. On June 9, we sent the four Model A’s to Calgary by train, then flew to Calgary. On July 27, we arrived in Dawson City, Yukon. “The next day we drove two of the Model A’s (including mine) up the Dempster Highway to the Arctic Circle. Five hundred miles of gravel roads but we made it back in 20 hours in the oldest cars to cross the Arctic Circle in Canada. “By the end of 2007, I had over 70,000 miles on the car. The year 2008 got off to a bad start with an engine rear main bearing going but we were soon back on the road. The car ran great all year and by November I had passed the 80,000mile mark. “In 2012, the rear main bearing went again and the motor was out for the rest of the year. Early in 2013 the motor was back in but quickly developed a rear main bearing oil leak. A local machine shop installed a rubber seal and stopped the leak.

“In November 2014, I passed the 100,000mile mark. It was a long journey and driving the car was only part of the fun. The people I have met on the 100,000-mile journey have made it very special. I wonder what the next 100,000 miles will bring.” I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington, Ont. N8H 3W2. Everyone whose story is published in my column will receive a free autographed copy of my book: “OLD CAR DETECTIVE FAVOUNorm Grant’s 1930 Model A Ford Tudor. RITE STORIES, 1925 to 1965.”

Much sought after cold cream was a luxury months Audrey had been talking about buying what she considered to be sheer luxury. She saw it when she was at Ritza’s Drug Store one day, and couldn’t get it out of her mind. She even dragged me into the store one Saturday, even though I was so much younger and couldn’t imagine what was so exciting about what she was about to blow all her money on! What got her all worked up was a jar of something called Pond’s Cold Cream. It didn’t look all that special to me. The jar was almost as big as a honey pail, and inside was a pale yellow cream that Audrey was sure was going to do wonders for her skin. It had been written up in a copy of Mother’s Philadelphia Enquirer, and said it was being sold world-wide. It was guaranteed to make every face ‘as clean as the driven snow’. My sister had cut out the clipping, folded it, and kept it in her shoe, and every so often, she would take it out and look at it. Well, the day finally came when Audrey had enough money in the corner of her hanky to march into Ritza’s Drug Store and make her purchase. It was a Sat-

Goodness knows how many times Audrey took her hanky out of the washstand drawer, untied the corner, and counted her money. There were no ways to earn money back then, and it was only through the generosity of aunts or uncles that we children had any money at all. Uncle Lou always gave us money when he came to visit, and at Christmas time Aunt Freda would send a one dollar bill which was to be divided between the five of us. My brothers showed their Bantam chickens at the Renfrew Fair earning a few pennies, but none of us had what we could call a heavy purse! But Audrey had been squirreling away her pennies for months, because she was bent on making a huge purchase when she had accumulated enough. Although Mother and Father frowned on wasting money, we could do what we wished with whatever we were able to gather together. And for

urday, Mother’s usual day to go into Renfrew to peddle her eggs, chickens, homemade soap and butter, and Audrey routed me out of bed early to help her with her weekly chores so that she could go into town too. Mother may not have been strict with how we spent our few pennies, but she was strict about doing our weekly Saturday morning chores! Audrey and I headed for the drug store, and went right to the counter where all the cosmetics were stacked in piles. There were boxes of something called Tanjay, and boxes of fancy soaps, and there it was! Several glass jars of Pond’s Cold Cream. Audrey picked up one of the jars, unscrewed the top and took a long breath and then passed it under my nose. It smelled like lemons, and I could easily understand how the ad said it would do what it would do! Now, this was pure luxury. Never, could I ever remember of anything like that jar coming into our house out in Northcote! Audrey undid her hanky, and laid out all her money on the counter. She had exactly enough to make her purchase....29 cents!!! And that included the

brown paper bag with Ritza’s Drug Store printed in big black letters on the outside! Audrey put it right up on her half of the washstand we shared in our bedroom, and shaking a finger right under my nose, forbid me to lay a finger on it! Well, when you’re only sixyears-old, with a curious nature, and an imagination to boot, those orders might as well have been given to our old rooster! I wondered. If it was said to make your face as smooth as the driven snow, would that not mean it would erase your freckles too? I was determined to try it, but I would have to wait for just the right moment. It would never do to dig into it until Audrey had first made her mark in the jar. I didn’t have to wait long. That night she lathered it on her face, put a towel on her pillow, and went to bed, convinced she would have a new face by morning. Sunday, she looked the same to me as she did every day. I decided I would just put a small dab on the end of my nose where my freckles were the thickest...and this I did when I had the bedroom to myself getting dressed for church. I rubbed it in well, and it soon

vanished, but it did absolutely nothing for my freckles. I would like to say I could see a change in Audrey’s face. But for weeks of slathering on the Pond’s Cold Cream, she looked exactly the same to me, and she was .29 cents poorer. I knew then nothing, not even that wonderful smelling jar of cream was ever going to get rid of my hateful freckles. And I realized there was more truth than poetry in what old Granny Hines would say when she heard anyone complain: “be happy with what God gave you...it could be a lot worse”.
