Salt, sand for private lanes could be contentious issue for South Frontenac
Guitarfest Jam
By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — A can of worms that is certain to have significant financial repercussions down the road was opened wide at South Frontenac Council’s regular meeting last week in Sydenham when representatives of the Norman Lane Association came asking for salt and sand to put on their roadway this winter. Under the current terminology, a “lane” is a roadway that is not owned or maintained by the municipality, as opposed to a “road” which is municipal property and maintained by the Township. (‘Maintained’ includes things like snow removal, salting, sanding, pothole repair, shoulder brushing, grass cutting, gravel and grading, as well as responsibility for any unforeseen events such as culvert replacement following a flood or other natural disaster or event.)
Gazette Events - One of the less publicized but equally enjoyable aspects of the Canadian Guitar Festival is the impromptu jams that spring up, often among musicians who live miles away from each other and have never met. Here Jaymeson Trudgen of Ottawa, his brother Michael Trudgen of London, Morgan Rooney of Ottawa and Alan Man of Whitby put down a few notes. Photo/ Craig Bakay

A lane, on the other hand, is the responsibility of the residents who live on it. The concept essentially has been a way for subdivisions and other developments to receive approval in the interests of keeping municipal expenses down. Sometimes developments include provisions for the municipality to assume the road and its maintenance (often with corresponding fees laid out in the subdivision agreement) but this has become not the norm in recent years. However, the 50+ Norman Lane residents had been enjoying salt and sand provided by the Township and, represented by Ron Kramer, came to Council asking that the practice continue. “This (providing salt and sand) has been done in the past, Kramer said. “But we were told in February that this would be the last of it.

Stowe said. “It may be as many as 60. “(But) Mr. Kramer, it’s not fair to the other people who will come forward if we open the floodgates. If you get sand and salt, I want it on my lane too. Planner Lindsay Mills said he hadn’t had a chance to confirm the actual ownership of the roads in question yet but did say there were “two or three others, all in older subdivisions that technically the municipality did own.

Public Works Manager Mark Segsworth said that the Norman Subdivision is a series of private lanes, not Township roads. But resident Jim Burke, who has lived there since 1976 begged to differ. “You own them (Norman Lane and Saw Mill Lane),â€? he said. “They may be unassumed but you still own them.â€? funds exist in the Road Construction Reserve for this project. Segsworth suggested blue and gold for the crosswalk as they are the Sydenham High colours. Although generally in agreement with upgrading the crosswalks in the schools area, not all of Council was in agreement as to the methodology. “There are cheaper ways to achieve similar safety objectives,” said Coun. Al McPhail. “I disagree with taking from reserves for this,” said Dep. Mayor Ron Vandewal. “The funds should
be taken from another project like we’ve done before.” The cost of the patterned concrete crosswalk is $25,000. Segsworth said traffic will have to be detoured on Mill Street for about a week to let the concrete set and cure. Gazette News — Former South Frontenac councilor Mark Tinlin returned to Sydenham for a Council meeting last week to put the finishing touches on a project he began more than two years ago. With the appropriate fanfare, South Frontenac raised the curtain on its new Coat of Arms. “There’s history being made here,” Tinlin said. “The Coat of Arms was designed at Government House in Ottawa and the granting of the Coat of Arms as well as a description of it are here on the wall in the Council chambers.” In the centre shield, he said, bulrushes are a prominent feature. “The rushes are a popular scene on many lakes here and where the Verona Cattail Festival takes its name from,” he said. “At the very top, there’s a loon, resting on a municipal coronet (crown) symbolizing municipal authority with two griffin claws which were taken from Lord Frontenac’s Coat of Arms. In the centre are four coloured disks (red, white, black and yellow) that symbolize the Algonquin heritage of the area and these are flanked by two stags, which represent forestry and hunting and are also part of Lord Sydenham’s Coat of Arms, he said. “On the one stag is a fish, representing recreational fishing and on the other, a milk can, representing agriculture,” Tinlin
said. This all rests on a rocky base, representing the Frontenac Axis, with trilliums representing Ontario sprinkled throughout. The base rests on waves, representing all the lakes and waterways of South Frontenac. Finally, the Township motto “Our strength is our community,” is prominently displayed. The motto was coined by Neil Allan, in a contest for this purpose. The colour scheme is blue (depicting the sky and water) and gold, which is a common colour in municipal Coats of Arms, Tinlin said. “We sent the tapestries of the four former townships crests (which now also hang in the Council chambers) to Rideau Hall and the heraldry experts there took elements from each of them to create this Coat of Arms,” he said. “Mark was the driving force behind this project,” said Mayor Gary Davison. “And he had the contacts at Rideau Hall. “I don’t even know where Rideau Hall is.” After resigning from South Frontenac Council last year (Coun. Pat Barr assumed the seat), Tinlin moved to St. Mary’s near London. He is seeking a seat on that municipality’s Council in the October Municipal Election. The new Coat of Arms now resides on the back wall of the Council Chambers, facing the public entrance, right above the Mayor’s chair.

ight-year-old Silka Olvet has a smile that can light up virtually any room – even the old, drab audiology clinic area at Hotel Dieu Hospital where she receives amazing care that enables her to experience the sounds of the world. After Silka was born at their Buck Lake home in 2006, Leslie KirbyOlvet, noticed her infant daughter didn’t startle when the family’s dog would bark. If there is one thing that Leslie says she would change about the ENT experience, it’s the environment. The clinic is located in the 130-yearold Murray Building (once home to the City’s Public Library) in a cramped

Sheesham and Lotus & ’Son right at home on Blue Skies main stage By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — Old time music is better than it sounds . . . so the song goes. But on Friday night at the 41st annual Blue Skies Festival at Clarendon, it was sounding pretty good. Sheesham Crow, Lotus Wight and Sonny Sanderson have been dusting off old-time tunes (many of which were written a century ago) for some time now, and for 40 minutes or so, it was 1929 in the forests of Central Frontenac. This wasn’t their first appearance
at the venerable folk gathering. Eight years ago, they were a ‘tweener’ act before Rick Fines. But this time, they were featured performers, with four ‘official’ CDs to their credit (the latest, just recently released is The High Stepping Music of Sheesham and Lotus & ’Son). And, the addition of Sanderson on sousaphone (a tuba), has added a bottom end that was remarkably effective on this summer evening. They’ve been active in Blue Skies Camp activities for years as well, making the trek up Roads 38 and 509 from their Frontenac Islands homes.
So they feel right at home on what used to be Oskar Graf’s backyard. “It’s great to have the curtain come up and everybody screams,” said Sheesham. “They give you so much love here that you don’t want to disappoint. “It’s amazing to look out and see all the little kids you’ve taught over the years, many of whom are now grown up.” “Yeah,” said Lotus, generally a many of few words. “I felt the curtain raised on all of our friends and family . . . and their friends and family. “It felt a smooth and relaxed set
on my side.” “I had some fiddle problems on my side,” said Sheesh. “Yeah, what was that?” said Lotus. Nobody else noticed, it seemed, judging by the applause and audience response. To a great extent, their performance is what Blue Skies is all about. It’s more like a kitchen jam than a slick Ticketron ‘event.’ And that, said Sheesham, is its greatest strength and the reason it’s endured for four decades. “Besides being one of the last ves-
tiges of the folk festival, in a world where Rogers is taking over the fold, we come because it’s like the people are here having a party,” he said. “It’s a sincere invitation to play here, but we’re not invited because people will buy tickets to see us play. “We come to make music for the party that’s already happening.” And, devoid of the hype and starmaker machinery behind the popular song, Blue Skies stands unique, he said. “It’s a very real, a very honest thing here,” he said. “It’s just a great place to be.”

TransCanada would like to take this opportunity to update you on the Eastern Mainline Project. The proposed project is needed to meet firm service commitments following the proposed transfer of a portion of the Canadian Mainline capacity to crude oil service from natural gas services as a part of the Energy East Project. The project is also required to meet growing market demand for new supplies of natural gas from the U.S. Northeast. TransCanada is proposing to add new natural gas pipeline facilities to the existing Canadian Mainline system in Ontario. These new facilities would be added in sections between Markham and the Township of South Dundas, on the southern arm of the Eastern Triangle. The preliminary scope of the project included the construction of approximately 370 km of pipeline. TransCanada has now finalized contracts with commercial shippers and determined a refined scope in order to ensure the appropriate amount of capacity is constructed to meet TransCanada’s existing and new firm contractual commitments. The proposed project scope now includes approximately 250 km of 36 inch pipeline with the addition of nine new 11 MW compressor units to be installed at five existing compressor stations. This project is a vital addition to the Canadian Mainline system and will provide homes, businesses, schools and hospitals in Ontario

An initial proposed route was shared in project materials that were provided at Open Houses held between May and June 2014 and during other outreach activities this year. During the Open Houses and as part of ongoing conversations with landowners and stakeholders, we received important feedback and have refined the route for the pipeline. We are continuing our engagement efforts and welcome any additional feedback as we refine route deviations. We welcome any questions or comments you may have. TransCanada anticipates submitting our application to the National Energy Board in the third quarter of 2014. Engagement will be ongoing throughout the NEB review process and the construction and operation phases of the project. Lose your clothes (and your inhibitions) at naturist ranch By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Gazette News - Naturism (defined as “a cultural and political movement practicing, advocating and defending social nudity”) is a way of life for John and Dorothy, a Kingston couple in their late 60s. “It just feels wonderful,” John says of being nude. “The breeze is blowing on you, you’re not encumbered, and you can do everything you do clothed. I garden in the nude. I spend my time in the nude around the house. It’s very natural, obviously, and free.” This summer has been a major turning point for John and Dorothy thanks to the recently opened Freedom Fields Naturist Ranch, a bed and breakfast and campground located about 40 minutes away from
Kingston, just outside the village of Tamworth. “When we travel we used to go to clothing optional resorts and things like that but there was nothing much around here,” John says. “We’ve been up here five or six times now and each time gets better… It’s nice to come out to a venue where you can go farther afield, so to speak, than you can in your own home.” Freedom Fields was opened last summer by Yvonne Gibson and Hector Gravell, who moved to the ranch from the Hamilton area in 2011 when the naturist community they were living in was sold. “They sold it back in to a textile community, so they turned it into a campground where everybody had to put their clothes back on,” Gibson explains.
“To take that away from us wasn’t an option. It was just something we couldn’t live with,” Gravell adds. “So we decided we were going to come out here and [open this up] so people have another place to come to.” The property’s many amenities include a pool, a hot tub, horses and trails for walking. On weekends, special events are held such as the recent country and western night and the upcoming Woodstock themed festival being held the weekend of Aug. 16-17. While many people might assume that nudist communities are sexualized places where newcomers might feel self-conscious and uncomfortable, Gibson says that usually the opposite is the case. At Freedom Fields, they strive for a very safe, friendly, communityThere’s

minded vibe, and make sure everyone knows each other’s name and feels like part of the “family”. “We try and assure [newcomers] that you’re going to come in and you’re going to see people that are skinny, people that are fat, people who have scars, people who have tattoos. We’re all different. My advice to them is, get undressed, put your stuff in the car and walk in like you’ve done it a million times before. Other people won’t have a clue that you’ve never done it before and they’ll be all ‘hey, how are you doing?’ It’s all friendly. It’s the people that make everybody feel so comfortable.” In fact, dedicated naturists swear that being nude evens out the playing field for everyone, no matter what their body size or socio-economic status may otherwise indicate. “People walk up the driveway and they might have the Rolex watch on,” Gibson says. “They YOUR ADdoctors, lawyers. could look like 613.546.3607 What you’re wearing sometimes defines who you are. In here, you don’t know who the pauper is and who the rich man is, nor do you care. We’re all [equal] and respect is built from within, on who we actually are, not so much what we have or what we’ve accomplished.”

John agrees, noting that he feels much more comfortable naked than he does clothed, especially at such a positive space as Freedom Fields. “We’re all different sizes and shapes, that’s the way God makes us. Once you come out here and you meet other people of like mind, there go the barriers. I’m an older person and [today’s conventions] are built on youth and physicality. It’s really nice to come out here and be able to be nude and not be judged.” He adds that the resort you choose also has a significant impact on your experience, and as one who has travelled to many different clothing-optional resorts, he can vouch for the high quality of Freedom Fields. “If you were new and came here, I’d be a lot more comfortable taking my clothes off with the support of people like [Yvonne and Hector] than I would be at some places I’ve been, because they are supportive and they do help you assimilate into the rest of the group. “The best thing to do is come out, take your clothes off and everything else disappears so quickly that before you know it, it’s normal.” For more information and to view upcoming events, visit www. freedomfieldsnaturistranch.com.

In Our Opinion
If townships are forced to maintain ‘private lanes’ they actually own, tax hikes are sure to follow Craig Bakay Reporter
editorial@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette Column — Lets turn back the clock a bit, back to the days before amalgamation. Let’s go back to a time before there even the title of ‘planner’ in most municipalities. Way back in the ’60s, when South Frontenac was Bedford, Loughborough, Portland and Storrington Townships and Central Frontenac was Oso, Olden, Kennebec and Hinchinbrooke, there wasn’t much need for planners. Hell, there wasn’t all that much need for planning for that matter. Back when the 401 was still new, subdivisions were things that were going on in Toronto. Okay, so there were a few being planned in rural areas but for the most part, the rural governments and their reeves were happy to have a bit more tax assessment and getting a subdivision approved wasn’t usually that big a deal. After all, there was plenty of space and road standards weren’t anywhere near what they are today. (And neither were municipal liabilities and insurance rates, not to mention
maintenance costs.) And, even though developments might be called subdivisions, chances are the ‘houses’ on them were cottages that no one would think of using in December or February. Fast forward to the present. ‘Rural’ living is a bit different these days. What were once ‘cottages’ are now winterized, fourseason retirement homes, road expectations are considerably more than they once were and you can be damn sure that keeping a road up to standards costs a helluva lot more than it did 50 years ago. And such is the dilemma facing a lot of rural municipalities these days, as evidenced by the Norman Lane situation that arose at South Frontenac Council last week. You see, these days it’s common practice for subdivision residents to be responsible for their own roads, or ‘lanes’ as the contemporary terminology deems them. Municipal governments are a lot more inclined to approve developments if they don’t come with associated maintenance costs for roads. But, we’re now finding out, a lot of ‘lanes’ were actually constructed on township road allowances which for whatever reason, were never ceded to the road association. And there’s the rub. In a grow-

ing number of cases, the township doesn’t maintain the road even though it’s on township property. In some cases, like Norman Lane, there had been a kind of gentlemen’s agreement that the township would dump off some sand and/or salt and the road association would see to it that it got spread on the road. But even this, it seems, is becoming a financial burden on municipalities who have to deal with downloaded highways and finding a place to put garbage. However, when this sort of thing gets before a judge (and make no mistake, it will, probably sooner rather than later), the entity that actually owns the road is ultimately responsible for it. In other words, if somebody dies on one of these roads because there hasn’t been sufficient maintenance, guess who will be left holding the bag. Of course, maintenance costs money, money for sand, salt, gravel, grading, culverts, brushing, pothole patching, guardrails, shoulders, ensuring adequate width and probably a host of things nobody ever thought of when they were saying okay to letting some developer put a road into a bunch of cottages. But the bottom line is that it’s about to get a whole lot more expensive, tax-wise, to live in the Frontenacs.

Frontenac Gazette - Thursday, August 14, 2014
Pandemic panic? Keep calm and carry on Gazette Editorial - Ebola has certainly been in the news a lot lately. A recent epidemic in the African countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea has claimed the lives of at least 1,000 people, and it seems, at least to many, that an outbreak in North America is imminent. News sites and aggregators such as Breitbart and the Drudge Report have posted a deluge of stories about Ebola plane scares, ‘potentially’ infected patients in Ohio and in the U.K., and have even taken experts’ warning out of context to paint an ominous story of imminent plague and pestilence. Even Donald Trump felt compelled to tweet that Obama should halt the transport of two infected aid workers back to America for fear that the disease might spread on U.S. shores. We believe that we should hold off a bit before hunkering in our bunkers and awaiting the End of Days. That’s because with rigorous controls in place, the disease poses little threat to Canadians, or indeed to anyone in the Western world. Make no mistake, Ebola is a terrifying disease, with infections typically resulting in a 50 per centplus death rate. There is a real tragedy occurring in equatorial Africa. More than anything, however, it is a tragedy that underscores the prevailing conditions of poverty, and poor sanitation endemic in rural Africa. Ebola is not an air born illness like influenza, and can only be contracted by coming into close contact with the blood or bodily secretions of infected patients. When you combine this simple fact with first-rate network of border agencies, air-traveller security, and state-of-the-art quarantine procedures, the likelihood of an outbreak here is exceedingly low. It’s also worthwhile to point out that experimental treatments have shown great promise in the recent outbreak, with many experts crediting a new serum with having saved the lives of two American missionaries. A more worthwhile question might be: why haven’t large amounts of this serum been synthesized and made available to those in affected areas? It’s true that the serum is highly experimental, and up until now has only been successful in monkeys. But when you’re encountering something as deadly as the Ebola, shouldn’t you throw everything and the kitchen sink at it? Many pundits, not just ‘the Donald,’ have advised against bringing sick aid workers back to the Western World. This shows a poor understanding of the mechanisms by which the virus spreads, and greatly underestimates our ability to keep patients quarantined. The sick deserve the best medical treatment that can be provided. Unfortunately, Africa still has a long way to go in terms of public sanitation, education, and health care facilities before they can begin to treat this disease with any degree of effectiveness.

Gazette Editorial - Steve and I recently celebrated another wedding anniversary. With eight official years of marriage, we’re closing in on the decade mark and of course this got me thinking about things. Most couples have what they consider to be a funny and unique story about how they met, and Steve and I are no exception. Whenever anyone asks, I tell them that Steve was the very first person I met when I moved up to university. This might not be a literal truth, but he is definitely the first person I met that I would go on to have any sort of meaningful acquaintance with for more than a week. We met on September 2, 2002, when we were assigned to the same frosh group. Steve stood out from the crowd because it was his 19th birthday. He came over and introduced himself and told me he was going to get legally wasted for the first time ever at a fine Ottawa establishment called the Liquor Dome. I think he thought this information would impress me. It didn’t. One thing led to another. We were a sort of couple for a while and eventually we figured we were spending so much time together we might as well acknowledge to ourselves and others that we were an item. Soon we were pretty much living together between each other’s respective places and it only made sense to get our own apartment. We were 20 years old and by far the first among our friends to move in with a partner. Most people in our circle were a little surprised, but generally very supportive. It wasn’t until we got engaged shortly after that they really thought we were mad. My friends clearly thought I was rejecting feminism and/or carelessly throwing my youth away and/or pregnant. My parents had no choice but to be supportive, seeing as they too got married in their early 20s and couldn’t exactly tell me not to. Granted, their era was culturally different, but they are math people and can’t deny the logic of numbers. And, they genuinely love Steve. He is just the sort of person they like – endearingly awkward with a big heart. He was also a teenage orphan when they met him, and I think they’ve always felt a certain amount of parental responsibility as in-law figures. Some people have observed that Steve and I act more like siblings than spouses; this is a big reason why. Now that I’m in my 30s, being married is considered normal amongst my peer group. For a long time, though, it wasn’t. I’d introduce Steve as my husband and get perplexed looks. At first I was kind of proud to be different, then I went through a self-conscious phase, hyperaware that certain kinds of people judged me as being weird in a bad way
based on my matrimonial status. In recent years, a different kind of conversation has come up. About once every few months or so, someone who doesn’t know how long I’ve been married will tell me all about how they’re so glad they waited to get married instead of throwing their lives away in their early 20s like all their hopelessly conventional friends did. I usually say something like “oh it’s really not that bad if you find the right person”, but what I want to say is “where were all your friends when I got married?” Certainly, I did not find that getting married a month after my 23rd birthday in 2006 was all that conventional of a choice. Honestly, I would have loved some company. When it comes to life choices, it seems you just can’t win if your goal is other people’s approval. Marrying Steve remains one of the best choices I’ve ever made. We didn’t marry young because we’re prudes or because we thought we’d go to hell if we had sex without rings on our fingers or because we felt culturally obligated to. We did it to symbolize the strong familial bond we shared from very early on in our relationship. Our situation was somewhat unique. It was important to me that Steve understood how much I wanted him in my life and in my family, and it was important to him to feel a part of it in an official way. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

Sponsored by the WI Community Centre Board, the weekend brought family members from far and wide home because the ball tournament IS all about family. Parents, grandparents uncles aunts cousin and friends living on the island wait for their loved ones from away to come home on this particular weekend. And as in past years family members and friends arrived off the ferry, no telling how long they waited to get on it, from all over Canada and the US as well as places beyond. They came by car , by van, by truck, many pulling boats. And there were trailers large and small too numerous to count. Heavy traffic, long line-up’s and a full parking lot, saw people carrying their gear, scramble to get on the ferry to meet their game schedule. I’ve been told the Ball tournament is a bigger occasion than Christmas for islanders perhaps because it is easier to get here than in the winter. Or maybe it is because coming in the summer refreshes wonderful childhood memories of island life. Wolfe Island is one of the few remaining communities where a tournament is held. The tournament was founded in 1985 by Jim Kyle, Bernie Fargo, and Elwin McKenna and the township continues to recognizes its importance to the community. In nearly perfect weather a record number of twenty-eight (extended) family teams began playing on three diamonds in the A & B Divisions Friday evening and throughout Saturday cheered on by family, friends and hundreds of spectators. primarily at WI’s Community Centre. There were more than 400 people actually playing the game. Teams consist of 9 members each plus back-up. Four women must be in the field at one time. A larger (Melon) ball is used for play. The event concluded with the awards presentation on Saturday evening. Community Centre Board president Lesley Mosier announced the trophy’s: “A Division winners, the Hulton family team. “B Division winners, the Orr Family Team. The Joe Reitzel Memorial Trophy for Oldest Average Team was presented to the Hulton Team. The awards presentation was not without tears. The Steve Hogan Family Team made up of Hogan’s, O’Shea, Greenwood’s and more, all wore a small insignia on their team shirts, and played in memory of their recently deceased beloved family member Debra 10
(Greenwood) Knox The team was awarded the Bill Kyle Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship . This was followed by the presentation of the first annual Debbie Knox Memorial Trophy awarded by the Knox family to the Kyle ‘s, “the team with most dedication and persistence. As evening descended families and friends wended their way home to enjoy time together through the remainder of the weekend. FYI About the Community Centre grounds: The Township of Wolfe Island (then) had the foresight to set aside land in the centre of Marysville as community centre. A Community Centre committee (now officially a Community Centre Board) was established, and over the years the community centre grounds saw the development of two ball diamonds with lights, a small community building, a tennis court ( now displaced by the rink), a children’s playground, and an area for horse club events. Community Fund raising , community effort and physical energy by islanders is contiuous. The annual WI Music Festival is held on the grounds. And YES there is a rink. And it is the rink perhaps that is the community’s greatest achievement again through fund raising,
community and township effort. Like most Canadian small towns, particularly isolated communities hockey has been played locally on any kind of ice for generations and Wolfe Island is no exception. With the new NHL sized rink, artificial ice plant and now a roof over it , the rink has become a 1st class community asset. Around Town:* Did you notice the Township’s announcement of Public meetings at Howe Island Thursday August 21st at 5:30 pm , St. Philomena’s and Wolfe Island Thursday Aug. 14th Sacred Heart School at 6:30 pm. The agenda includes Zoning By-law update, waste recycling strategy; changes at WI’s Waste site. A date for the closure of the site has been identified as April 2015. * The Book sale at the WIBC was successful. Coming events:**Barrett Bay Regatta, Sun. Aug. 24th. “ **WI Ploughing Match , Sept. 13th. Watch for posters. ( for more events go to wolfeisland.com)

Meet you market vendor: Baby Treasures mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – Finding unique kids hats and hair accessories can sometimes be difficult, but a new vendor at the Frontenac Farmers Market hopes to help. Julie Atack is the owner of Baby Treasures which specializes in crocheted accessories. “I love doing it and I started in March and I’ve been busy with it ever since, explained Atack. “I love
making stuff for my kids and it just kind of progressed from there. Looking at her selection it’s hard to believe that Atack has been crocheting for such a short time, but she admits that she caught on quickly and actually develops her own patterns now. “It was kind of a progression from free patterns to patterns I bought and now I modify patterns to make them my own. It is a little complicated to follow a book and I prefer to just sit there and do it on my own. I have so many ideas for future patterns but I simply don’t have the time to work on them right now. Baby Treasures has only been at the market for the past month, but business is doing well already. Atack has had multiple
special orders and requests to modify designs. “People see stuff that they like and then they want to change it a bit in terms of colour and patterns and luckily I can do that, added Atack. “The items can be tailored to each customer and I like creating unique pieces. Atack also loves creating pieces for her own children including her most challenging project so far – a My Little Pony hat for her daughter Olivia. “That was the most challenging piece by far. It has a lot detailing and sewing involved and also some stuffing. It took me easily 8 hours to make, but my daughter loves it and a lot of customers love it too. Customers also love her owl and dog hats. She originally thought that the owl design was ugly, but customers seem to love it and she is happy to see their response to her creations. “They are really soft and cute and perfect for winter. I really love crocheting and I love creating the new things. I also love the response from the customers and meeting new people.
Atack hopes to keep creating her accessories and she encourages people to come check them out especially because they are locally made. “I make them all here in Verona and I try to get some of my yarn locally. I hope that all of it can be local in the future, but for now I am just
trying to keep up with demand. Visit Baby Treasures at The Frontenac Farmers Market on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m in Verona at Prince Charles Public School or check out their page on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/babytreasures7

Serial donor reaches significant milestone By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Gazette News - Every 56 days for the last 15 years, David Pickering has, quite literally, given a part of himself to his community. On Aug. 5, the 58-year-old retired military officer headed into the Kingston Blood Services office on Gardiners Road to give his 100th donation of blood.
“Everyone has an inherent responsibility to support their community in whatever ways they are capable of doing so,” Pickering said as he sat in the waiting room prior to the donation. “It’s an elementary aspect of humanity. This is one of the ways that I support the community that I’m part of. It’s a very personal way. It’s a very significant way. And it’s not like there’s any other choice. People need it.” Pickering first started giving blood
when he joined the military at the age of 17. “The military has always had a support for blood donations for obvious reasons. They got you in the habit of it right when you were doing your initial training. I did that a lot when I was in my late teens early 20s, but then I got out of the habit.” Eventually, Pickering was posted back to Kingston after a number of stints in very rural areas and started donating again regularly. “It’s something

that I’ve been proud of,” he says. “I’ve known how the donations are racking up and so for more of a decade I’ve known [the 100th donation] was coming. It’s one of the life goals that I set out for myself and now it’s here.” Pickering explains that for every one donation of blood, it is estimated that three people in need will benefit. “That’s 300 people who potentially could have had their lives saved by me spending an hour here every couple of months. It’s not that much to do but it has a potentially life changing impact on other people.”

He encourages everyone to consider doing the same. “Of course it’s a personal decision, but it’s also a very personal donation. There’s no other way you’re going to have better, closer, more intimate contact with even somebody who’s unknown than to potentially save their lives. I don’t even have to see a car crash on the 401 to know that I’ve helped somebody who’s dying of cancer or somebody who has some sort of disease.” Indeed, Pickering says he has no plans to stop donating now. “The mere fact that I’ve met 100 in no way changes the fact that there’s as much of a requirement next week as there is this week. The need doesn’t change just because I’ve hit a big round number, so I’ll continue to give blood as long as my health allows me to do so.” For more information on blood donation, visit the Canadian Blood Services website at www.blood.ca. Emerson’s experiment turned out to be a blast past her head and settled against the wood box by the Findlay Oval. Our feet barely hit the floor as we tore outside to see what had happened. Well, there was Emerson, smart enough to be well away from the scene of the crime, with his face covered with ash, and two dead hens beside him. They had been hit headon. What was left of the outhouse, lay on its side, with the two holes pointing westward, and the big stone beside it smashed to smithereens.

Gazette Lifestyle - It seemed to me back then, Father, whenever he wasn’t working the fields, was either mending fences or blowing up stones or stumps. Three generations of Hanemans had tried, with only moderate success, to clear all the land that ran like a narrow ribbon from the Northcote Side Road, across the creek and the Bonnechere, and then to the backfields. There seemed to be boulders everywhere. And stumps, still deep in the ground, where trees had been felled, with their roots left to begin new growth. And so Father, when time permitted, would perform what Mother called “pioneering” whatever that meant. Father would take dynamite, and uproot stumps, which would then serve as fencing, piled in rows to separate fields. Or he would blow up stones, imbedded deep in the ground, heap what was left of them onto the stone boat, and get rid of them wherever Father saw fit. It seemed to me there were stones everywhere on that
farm. Some were deep and flat and close to the house, and on these I could play “Jacks”, and I hoped Father would never put the dynamite to them. There were also loose stones, much bigger ones, around the outhouse. Some right against it by nature, and others piled there to keep the little building upright. Even the rain barrel at the corner of the house, sat on a big flat rock. My sister Audrey and I wanted no part of the blasting. But my three brothers, far more adventurous, couldn’t wait to join Father when he let it be known that he was about to blast something out...be it stumps or stones. Even though they knew exactly how it was done, Father alone was the only one to touch the dynamite. And then one day, a hot summer afternoon it was, Emerson took it upon himself to test his ability as a blaster. Unknown to Father of course, or Mother for that matter, Emerson decided to try his luck at blasting one of the big stones sitting against the outhouse, unknown to anyone, of course. The first hint we had was when there was an ungodly bang, and Mother peeling potatoes in the summer kitchen, with me beside her, barely missed being hit on the head with a piece of rock the size of fry pan that came through the back window, sailed
Apart from the loss of two hens, which Mother soon decided would be our supper that night; Mother was amazingly unfazed by the turn of events. She hated the outhouse with a passion, and had long since said she was going to have Old Herman, an authority on outhouses, build a new one as soon as she could afford the new lumber. Until that happened, the two holes alone would be up righted, and would have to do as an outhouse. Fortunately, they were well hidden in a cluster of cedar trees.
Father was harder to deal with. Apart from the danger, a point he barely touched on, he lamented on the loss of the two sticks of dynamite that had been wasted on a building that had served the Haneman family for three generations. Local firefighters to host family fun day at the Pump House Steam Museum By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
Gazette Events - Many of people may think that the role of a fire department is simply throwing water on a blaze. Kingston Fire and Rescue chief Rheaume Chaput assures us, however, that this is certainly not the case. “I think the misconception is that we only do certain areas of the service and we’re not a full encompassing service. We are very involved in a lot of areas from medical to high angle and it requires a lot of skill sets. I think people just don’t realize the amount of different areas we have to be
proficient in.” Community members can learn more about the fire service through an exhibit at the Pump House Steam Museum called Ashes to Innovation: Fighting Fires in Kingston, which is ongoing throughout the summer. On Aug. 16, Kingston Fire and Rescue is teaming up with the museum to present a free family fun day. Visitors can try on fire gear, get a good look at equipment such as the aerial ladder and the firefighter’s rehab tent, make some fire themed crafts, challenge themselves with a special Fire Fit for Kids test and enjoy many other activities. At 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. there will be a fire boat demonstration on and at 2:30 p.m. guests
can witness the Jaws of Life in action. “We’re going to leave some of our equipment out and people are going to have the opportunity to take photos with firefighters,” Chaput adds. “We’re just going to have a whole bunch of stuff down there for a fun family day.” Chaput hopes people will gain insight into the world of firefighting and get a sense of the diverse nature of the business. “It’s very intricate and there are a lot of different areas. People don’t get to see all of that and we’re hoping people will be able to take away from it just how diverse and challenging the role of being a fire service member is in today’s environment. have to be experts in a lot of different areas and there’s a lot of demand so we want to be able to showcase some of the areas we work in.” As always, he also hopes to increase public education on fire safety. “We want them to go back home and make sure that they have working smoke alarms and that they have a way out [of their house in case of a fire].” Chaput explains that the most common fire safety related misconception is that people overestimate the amount of time they have to get out of a building in the event of a fire. “Fire spreads very quickly and people

think they have more time than they actually do.” Chaput invites everyone to come down to the museum on Aug. 16 to learn about all these things and more. “I hope it’s a beautiful day and I hope everyone takes advantage of it and comes down. It’s a free event and it’ll be great for the kids.” To learn more about the event, visit its Facebook page called Fire! marginal land that would otherwise have been used for hay, or pasture, or wild habitat. Marginal land is marginal mostly because it isn’t very suited to plowing; because it is too steep or the soil is too shallow, the very things that make it vulnerable. Everyone knows that soil erosion is bad; enormous areas of North America have never recovered topsoil lost in the Dust Bowl. An inch of topsoil, which takes hundreds or thousands of years to develop, can be washed away in a single season. In extreme weather—which grows more frequent every year—one storm can wash an inch away in a day. Those rushing floodwaters on the evening news aren’t just washing away houses; that churning brown water is also carrying away future harvests. Obviously losing topsoil harms our ability to grow food. But like everything in nature, it has cascading ecological effects. Even gradual soil erosion muddies streams and chokes aquatic life from invertebrates to fish, and the creatures from herons to eagles that feed on them. Continued on page 19

the rest. But personal nutrition is only a one small part of the impact food choices have. Those choices also impact whether farmers can afford to grow food in a way that conserves that land for future generations. Consider this: in Frontenac County, about half of all farms graze cows. This can be a pretty sustainable way to grow food; our pastures are a dense mix of perennial grasses, clover, vetch, alfalfa, and diverse other species. In conjunction with manure from the cows, the pasture produces the nutrients it needs. Different pasture plants grow better in different weather, but all together they protect and build the topsoil. Annual crops like corn and soy and wheat, in contrast, generally require that the land be plowed up, the covering plants destroyed and the soil exposed. Which can leave it vulnerable to erosion. Ideally, farmers could make a living growing everything sustainably. But right now that’s now how things work, and to pay the bills, farmers may chase whatever crops will bring more income. Prices for crops like soy have spiked in recent years, pushing some farmers to plow

This sediment also accumulates in wetlands. Normally wetlands act like enormous sponges, soaking up excess water from storms and releasing it slowly through dry times. They prevent flooding and reduce the impact of drought—phenomena worsened by climate change—but wetlands can’t do this if smothered by silt.
Farmers interact with more land than any other part of society, and farmer actions have a lot to do with whether we will have a sustainable future. Which is why there’s been a push for something called Alternative Land Use Services. Under the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) rubric, farmers receive modest subsidies to do things that are good for the land, like maintaining grass near
streams to reduce erosion, or planting trees in hedgerows to house wildlife and combat climate change. There are active ALUS programs in parts of Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island. ALUS programs recognize that we as a society have to decide that we want to protect the land that feeds us. Which means understanding that the work farmers do isn’t just planting and harvesting crops;
it can also be protecting bees and wildlife, cultivating biodiversity, and fighting climate change. If farmers are to grow food sustainably, they need to have a stable income so they aren’t at the mercy of fluctuating international grain prices and commodity speculators. This is going to take a mix of public programs like ALUS, and individual and family choices to buy food from sustainable farmers.
Eating local, ecologically grown food, whether you buy it or grow it yourself, can have a beneficial impact far beyond your plate. In other words, if get your carrots with a bit of dirt on them, you might actually be leaving more soil for the land. Aric McBay is a farmer and author. Comedic actor has serious plans By Mark Bergin Columnist
Gazette Lifestyle – There was no mistaking the talent on stage in Blue Canoe’s production of The Producers. Queen’s University student Katie Oake also provided a standout performance. Last week’s column featured actor Joey Graff, also a Queen’s grad. It came as a surprise when we chatted and she told me she wasn’t in the

school’s drama department. She didn’t even take any drama courses. Oake just finished a degree in sociology and will be attending teacher’s college in September to begin work on a degree in education. For a while she considered a minor in politics. “But I don’t really have the personality for it,” she laughed. I maintain that comic actors are the most intelligent and talented. Joey Graff and Katie Oake prove that point. “I’d like to complete a PhD

later and go into a career that is autism related,” said Oake. Although her character in The Producers, Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson, or simply Ulla, may not seem like a candidate for post graduate work, she does have a keen sense of loyalty. The woman behind the Ulla persona is eloquent and anything but ditzy. In the musical, Ulla is a stereotypical Swedish actor — beautiful, tall and blonde — looking for an acting job. Oake’s performance as Ulla sing-

ing When You Got It, Flaunt It showcases her singing skills. I learned from another cast member in the show that Oake was battling a sore throat. She confirmed this during our interview. It didn’t show in her performance. “I think I had the sore throat because I sang a lot this year,” she said. “This was the third show in a row for me. I don’t know what happened beyond an illness. It’s terrifying; the vocal cords are so fragile. My singing teacher coached me, and I pulled it together.” As the character Ulla, Oake played the role of office receptionist, as well as having an acting role in Springtime for Hitler. Ulla dances better than she can type and, speaking little English, isn’t the greatest receptionist. But she steals the audience’s heart. How did Oake, a bright and talented woman, get into theatre? “I’ve been singing my whole life,” she said. “I’ve been taking vocal lessons for over ten years. I started doing performances around Ottawa at coffee houses and competitions for musical theatre as well as classical singing. I entered the Kiwanis Festival. I love it so much. The next step was to do live theatre.” Prior to attending Queen’s, she had only performed in one show while attending St. Matthew High School in Ot-
tawa. That first show was My Fair Lady at the Ottawa School of Speech and Drama. Her work in Queen’s University shows like Spring Awakening has intensified her interest in theatre. “I’m involved in theatre because there is nothing quite as satisfying as going on stage and putting something on for people to enjoy,” she said. “I love to sing. It’s so therapeutic for me. It requires so much concentration and effort. I lose myself in it.” She explained that her vocals teacher, Yoriko Tanno, has guided her for the past several years. “I’ve had two teachers,” said Oake. “The first taught me theory. Yoriko taught me so much about my voice. She’s been a mentor. She’s so great to me. I look up to her so much. She always says to pull out your best stuff when you’re performing.” Some people take years to perfect their acting craft. Despite little formal acting training, Oake enjoys the theatre scene and is a natural on stage. Her years of vocal training and singing performances have certainly helped her stage presence. “There’s such a strong theatre community at Queen’s,” she said. Continued on page 21

She said she does experience stage fright prior to a show. “I get very nervous,” she said. “But once I get out there, it’s kind of like, well, this is what’s going to happen, and things go well. Before a show, when I get stressed, I pace. And I drink a lot of water, just a lot of water gets me through. I pack a lot of jugs before performing. I also know that my life will not be over
if it doesn’t go well. It’s important to realize that. When I was younger I’d honestly treat a performance as the end of the universe. But it’s all just fleeting moments and can be a lot of fun.” She said that theatre is important for more than just the people on stage. “Theatre is a great way to express oneself,” she said. “It also offers a great way to be entertained. I can’t imagine life without the arts. Some
people push the arts to the wayside too easily.” As for future performances, Oake said she might like to be involved in the Queen’s production of Legally Blonde. “There’s such a belty comedic role in it,” she said. “Or, honestly, maybe I’ll do something a little more classical next.” For the past couple of years, she’s been a member of the Queen’s Players, a comedy, improv and rock/pop
troupe at Queen’s University. She’s hoping to have time to devote to performing in another show during this coming academic year but realizes her work for her education degree could be time consuming. Her interest in autism started several years ago at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where she has held summer jobs. “I fell in love with the autism field,” she said. “I tapped into a lot
of different areas. I did some work in administration, some in materials, and last summer got involved in some of the research. There is so much brilliant research going on. In between, I like being involved in shows, especially something funny like The Producers. Who knows where I’ll end up, but work in autism is my goal.” Mark Bergin on Twitter @markaidanbergin

Laugh your way through dinner with a very Kingston-themed murder mystery theatre event By Hiba Kesebi Reporter
Gazettee Events - If you’re thinking of having dinner at Aunt Lucy’s Dinner House on a Friday or Saturday of this month, you are bound to have a few laughs, says Genevieve Landis. That’s because Landis, an actor and the owner of Mr. Spot Mysteries, is staging a murder mystery dinner theatre production about a proposed Sir John A. Macdonald mega theme park that would be nestled beside Lemoine Point Conservation
Area. “You are going to die laughing at this show. It is very funny, she explains. “Everybody gets the chance to interact with the characters. The characters actually sit with the guests and you have the opportunity to get involved as much or as little as you want. Landis says she got the idea for the show after hearing Arthur Milnes, the commissioner of the Sir. John A. Macdonald bicentennial Committee, give a talk to her Rotary Club. “For some reason, I woke up one morning after
the talk and I thought ‘Oh, I think I am going to do this, she recalls. Landis’ script centres on a Toronto based venture capital company that plans to build a theme park featuring a Sir. John A. Macdonald mascot, a mini Buckingham Palace and a roller coaster. Environmental champions oppose the construction of the theme park near Lemoine Point Conservation Area and each side is committed to win at whatever cost. Continued on page 23

“What makes it different than other theatres is the interaction. You come to the event and you are totally immersed in what goes on during it. If a guest wants to propose some clue or if they want to draw attention to some suspect
they are quiet welcome and encouraged to do so,” she adds, noting that if a guest is celebrating a special event, like a birthday or anniversary, it would also be incorporated in the production. According to Landis there are a few important aspects to writing a murder mystery that keep people on their feet.
The first aspect she looks at is finding an event that brings people together. She then looks to define the characters – what their relationship is and what kind of connection they have with one another. “There is always some connection between characters, it could be an ob-
vious one or one that not immediately apparent.” The Sir John A. Macdonald Mega Park mystery features a venture capital billionaire and his wife, an environmentalist, a par developer and history expert. “We have a great cast. They mingle with guests and the detective calls on
the guests to help solve the murder and give clues.” For more information about the production visit: www.mrspotmysteries. ca. Tickets sell for $59.50 and include a three course meal. The show runs from 6:30 pm – 9 pm at Aunt Lucy’s Dinner House on Princess Street.

Local youth set sail for the East Coast Reporter
Gazette News - The St. Lawrence II, Kingston’s very own tall ship, set sail on its journey to the East Coast recently and its departure was very reminiscent of the bon voyage parties held in the 1900s. Friends and family members gathered around the Holiday Inn pier on Aug. 2 to bid farewell to the Brigantine Inc. vessel and its 25 member crew as they sail out on a month and a half journey to Charlottetown, PEI for the 150th anniversary of the First Ministers’ Conference. Libby Drew, the assistant operations manager for Brigantine Inc, said the crew, who are all between 16 – 25 years old, have spent months anticipating this moment. “It is a big voyage, one that comes around every 10-15 years, and the youth are very eager to set sail and participate in the celebrations she added. Crew member Ian Schmidt was quick to share his excitement. “We’ve done a lot of repairs on the ship all summer and winter. So that means making sure there are no rips and making new lines, he said. Though this isn’t Schmidt’s first journey on a tall ship, it is his longest and he and the crew have been training since the winter season. “We go through many training sessions on many different aspects of sailing like heavy weather sail handling, and radio operating. Some of us do medical training as well, like what to do in emergencies, he explained. For Schmidt one of the greatest things about sailing is climbing aloft.

“When you are on top there is just so much air. The wind is going through you and you are just hanging by a rope. It’s so nice to be up there,â€? he smiled. “You also get very close with the crew. The people are great and very rarely do we have annoying people,â€? he added. All crew members must go through the sailing program offered by Brigantine Inc, a non-profit company that sails the St. Lawrence II and offers the oldest continuous sail training program in North America. After going through the program, youth who wish to continue sailing come back in the winter to do more training sessions and courses, as well as an exam to test their expertise and knowledge. Once they have completed those components, they become crew and are able to teach future trainees. “Youth sail training is not necessarily part of Canadian cultural fabric but it is a huge part of development and character building that has kind of been lost in the past five generations in North America. It is huge on leadership, teamwork and personal development.â€? explained Drew. “It really has an impact on the kids. When they start with us they are standing apart, nervous and sometimes shy. But at the end of their journey they are definitely way more confident and more comfortable because they have lived with each other for so long and they have to rely on each other. They become friends fast and that’s part of the nature of tall ships,â€? she added, noting space is still available for youth between 16-25 who are interested in sailing during August and September. and a 73-year-old Mrs. Fanny. No one changes costume. It’s done throughout with lighting changes and a suspension of disbelief in the audience.” Michailidis said that when she first read the play, the word muscular came to mind. “The writing is very strong,” she said. “It demands strong acting. There’s no line or word that is arbitrary. It’s like a surgical instrument or a very sinewy muscle.” She explained that many changes in the play are instantaneous. “In the script, one of the best things about it is the sudden changes,” she said. “In theatre, we call it a snap. When lighting changes, everything changes just as quickly for the audience. We can be in the middle of a scene for two characters and there’s a snap and both of us are then different versions of ourselves.” She said that despite the dark tone, the play is very funny. “It is also very truthful. The playwright brings up a lot of ideas.”

Daytripper - With the sharpness of a physician’s scalpel and precision of a laser, Marius von Mayenburg’s play The Ugly One cuts into the superficiality of our narcissistic culture, where one’s worth is too often based on an arbitrary ideal appearance. The Thousand Islands Playhouse presents the German playwright’s work from Aug. 15–Sept. 20 in the Firehall Theatre. Marius von Mayenburg, who serves as writer-in-residence and dramaturg at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, is, by German standards, radical. In a country where scripts often focus on the political, von Mayenburg turns his attention to people and plot in absurd/comedic anthropological reflections of life. In North America, von Mayenburg can be considered a rebel, but for a different reason: his work is edgy, with gutsy commentaries on First World issues. The Thousand Islands Playhouse production of The Ugly One is directed by Ashlie Corcoran, the company’s Artistic Director, who also directed the 2012 Dora Award-winning version of the play, which took home the honour as the best independent production of the year. In The Ugly One, Lette, a mild-
geous new face. With his gorgeous looks, Lette’s life changes drastically. He becomes a star in his career, which, he thought, never depended on appearance. He also finds himself as the object of desire for women and men. It’s not only his face that changes. From a loving, likeable and mild-mannered husband, Lette, now physically beautiful, becomes personally ugly. He preens and strokes his own ego. He tells his devoted wife that she is now a mere one of a bounty of lovers. But Lette’s seeming good luck takes a nasty turn. Others acquire the same face from the skilled hands of the plastic surgeon, who knows how to capitalize on his skills. This is more than a vague metaphor for the stereotypical real-life images of beauty whose facades are supported by the multi-billion dollar cosmetic and fashion industries. What is Lette to do? How can he handle others with his identical beauty? Lette does so in true narcissistic form. You’ll have to see the play to find the answer. “The Ugly One deals with appearance,” said Michailidis. “I play three roles, each called Fanny. There’s Lette’s wife, his surgical assistant

mannered engineer who creates plugs, hopes to attend a convention where he will unveil his new invention. His hopes are dashed, and he is denied this joy. When he demands an explanation from his boss, Scheffler, Lette receives a brutal appraisal. He is informed that, “We can’t stand the sight of you. You can’t sell anything with that face.” In other words, Lette can’t be the face of this new product because of his face. After that shocking revelation, Lette approaches his wife, Fanny, played by Tracy Michailidis, fresh from a stunning performance on stage at the Beckett Theatre in New York City, where she played Ethel Rosenberg in Ethel Sings. Fanny tells Lette that she does indeed love him and that she has always admired him for coping so well with the fact that he is unspeakably ugly. Thus, his worst fears are confirmed. He is ugly to all. “The play is about a man who finds out he is hideously ugly,” said Michailidis. “But he becomes the most gorgeous man. That changes his life and the way other people treat him and the way he treats people.” The change in appearance comes after Lette takes his problem to a plastic surgeon who then performs a number of procedures. The result is a stunningly gor-

DAYTRIPPER stage in New York in the dramatic and moving Ethel Sings, I have no doubt that her work in The Ugly One will be superb. “This role is very intense,” she said. “I go back to the thing of it being muscular. Even the stage design is intense. We’re doing the show in the middle of the space. It’s in the round, but it’s a square. Using

The last time that regional audiences saw Michailidis was in her performances with The Thousand Islands Playhouse (Suds, 2013) and Theatre Kingston (The Winter Wonderettes, 2012). Her role as Fanny in The Ugly One is in another extreme. Having seen her on
sports as an analogy, you kind of feel like this theatre needs athleticism and stamina. It’s one act, and lasts under an hour, but the punch it packs is like a two and half hour play. To put all of this into under an hour, as an actor you feel like you’re doing a sprint instead of a marathon. It takes agility to move between characters. I’ve seen all

got that kind of edge. The Wonderettes had a soft focus. It was an exciting reflection back to a simpler time. The Ugly One has a different kind of reflection.” As Lette’s image becomes instantly changed, so does his narcissistic interest. This play offers a significant social commentary. It not only shows the protagonist’s images of himself, it reflects on our culture’s obsession with outward appearance. There is an advisory to audiences that the play contains sexy and provocative content. the other actors in the past and have admired their work. This helps me become a better actor. It’s really exciting for me to be involved in this.” The Ugly One makes demands of the audience, as well as to the actors. “Things happen fast,” said Michailidis. “It’s a real challenge for the audience. It’s in the Firehall Theatre and the way the space is… changed from what they may be used to. So much about it shines a light on appearances. You walk into the space and you know this looks different. How you move in that space is different. I’m really looking forward to it. “You see the style of the German playwright. “You’re finding out the emotional truth of this world and what the playwright is trying to say.” In comparison to roles audience have seen Michailidis in with Theatre Kingston and the Thousand Islands Playhouse over the past couple of years, she says this production has a completely different feel. “The Wonderettes had a style of its own as well,” she said. “In terms of social commentary, this play is more incisive and razor sharp.
