Council approves land purchase for Bellrock Village Reconstruction project By Craig Bakay Reporter
News — South Frontenac Council approved the purchase of 13,080 square feet of land in the hamlet of Bellrock for $3,300 at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. Also, it approved the acquisition of 1,300 square feet of property in exchange for 1,600 square feet of property. Both acquisitions are on Main Street and required for road construction purposes as part of the Bellrock Village Reconstruction project approved in the 2015 roads budget. “Those of you who know Bellrock, know it doesn’t drain well, said Public Works Manager Mark Segsworth. “We’re trying to correct that. “I won’t say everybody in Bellrock is behind this project but I think the majority are. Segsworth said part of the property they’re acquiring is a buy-back from an individual they sold the property to Verona couple Bill and Marg Campsall celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Sept. 13 with three generations family, (centre, l-r) April Le Blanc, several years back.

Verona couple celebrates seven decades of marriage News - A Verona couple who married as sweethearts at the end of the Second World War celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with family and friends at the Verona Lions Hall on Sept. 13. It seemed as though most of the population of this tiny community north of Kingston turned out to help Bill and Marg Campsall celebrate their anniversary with congratulations, well-wishes and dancing. “I’m thrilled that everyone is making such a big deal out of being married to someone I have loved and cared so much for, all these years, explains Bill. Bill mentioned that he enjoyed celebrating with so many friends and family. “It will be great to get out and dance with my wife and friends, he says smiling. Born to a farming family, Marg grew up on a farm near Sydenham with her three brothers and three sisters. At that time, Bill was living with his parents, two brothers and three sisters on Sunnyside Road in Kingston. Both of his parents worked at the Alcan plant, something Bill would also spend some time doing in the
early days of his career. Later in life, Bill decided to try his hand at a couple of other jobs, first driving for Colonial Coach Lines, then working as a civilian water and sewage engineer at Canadian Forces Base Kingston until his retirement in 1984. The couple actually knew one another for three years before they tied the knot. “He was friends with my one of my brothers, says Marg. “One day my brother brought Bill over to our home and we met for the first time. Romance blossomed, but events in Europe were about to change all that for the young couple. The Second World War had been raging overseas since 1939, and when Bill came of age, he enlisted. As a result, Bill and Marg didn’t have much time to spend together before he was sent overseas to Yorkshire from 194345. During those difficult war years, their friendship had to be put on hiatus while Bill served his country. Bill wed Marg six months after his return to Canada on Sept. 15, 1945; only days after Japan’s formal surrender to the Allies brought an end to the war. The couple eventually moved to Verona, where they had three sons. Chris Campsall is married to their
middle child, Bob. “Bob is their only surviving son, says Chris. “Their eldest son Wilfred and youngest son Bill are both deceased. Today, Bill and Marg have seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. When Bill, 91, was asked what he loves about Marg, 87, he answered immediately. “That’s easy, everything, he says.
“Not a whole lot of people live together for 70 years, but when you have a wife like mine - that’s easy to do. We are compatible in every way, enjoy one another and lead an active lifestyle. “They always enjoyed camping, travelling, square dancing, spending time with family and friends, adds Chris. Both Bill and Marg have been active in the community and are longstanding members of Trinity Unit-
ed Church, in Verona. Marg even received an Ontario Volunteer Award in 2014 for 30 plus years of volunteer service to Trinity United Church. Even through bad times, the Campsalls’ eternal love for one another prevailed. Asked about the key to their longevity and relationship, Marg replied, “Never go to bed mad.

News — “I’m hoping there won’t be too much discussion on this, there have been a lot of legislative changes that we’ve had to include, Planner Lindsay Mills told South Frontenac Council while presenting the revised Official Plan (OP) for adoption at Council’s regular meeting last week in Sydenham. “One small change that was proposed by Coun. (Alan) Revill, and I agree with, is stronger language on industrial usage in hamlets such as traffic concerns, lighting, etc, he said. The OP, first adopted in 2003, has undergone several changes since its inception and this incarnation is no exception. However, in this case, many of the changes involve firming up definitions. For example: “‘Rural Areas’ means a system of lands within municipalities that may include rural settlement areas, rural lands, prime agricultural areas, natural heritage features and areas and resource areas. “‘Rural Lands’ means lands which are located outside settlement areas and which are outside prime agricultural areas. While there wasn’t much discussion on the changes, there are quite a few, most of which reflect Ontario’s provincial policy statement recognizing the natural landscape as an asset. “The Township recognizes the value of ‘lake management/stewardship plans’ and ‘recreational capacity assessments’ that are initiated by various lake associations within the municipality. When prepared by qualified professionals, these plans provide further technical data on which to substantiate OP policies to ensure the sustainability of the lakes, the lands and the natural ecosystem while supporting continued activity and development. Strangely enough, one proposed change (opposed by the Township) that won’t be going in reads “development and site alteration within

(environmentally sensitive areas) shall not be permitted unless it is demonstrated through an environmental impact study that there would be no negative impacts on the features or functions. In the area of source water protection, a section specific to the Sydenham water plant has been added. “The government of Ontario passed the Clean Water Act in 2006 to protect the province’s existing and future drinking water sources. The Act enables municipalities to protect their drinking water sources through the preparation of collaborative, locally developed, science-based assessment reports and source protection plans. In the Sydenham area, three Intake Protection Zones (IPZs) have been identified based on proximity to the Sydenham water treatment plant intake. Another addition that could become very applicable as the baby boom ages pertains to secondary or ‘granny’ suites. “The Planning Act of Ontario considers the provision of affordable housing to be desirable and to be a matter of provincial interest. Accordingly, a secondary residential unit may be permissible within a single detached dwelling, a semi-detached dwelling or a row house subject to appropriate approvals, servicing and off-street parking. The zoning bylaw will specify the limitations of this provision including locations, housing types, parking and yard requirements, maximum size and landscaped open space and amenity areas. This secondary accommodation is in addition to any sleeping cabin which may already be permitted on a given lot.

South to consider septic re-inspection plan following corporate services report By Craig Bakay Reporter
News — South Frontenac Council endorsed a recommendation by its Corporate Services Committee to explore the feasibility and implications of septic re-inspection options at its regular meeting last week in Sydenham. Council directed staff to come up with a report but didn’t set a timeline. Coun. Pat Barr, while not directly opposing the plan, did take issue with certain concerns on both feasibility and implication. “Probably exploring options is not a bad idea,” she said. “But forcing people to have their systems pumped every two years, I would caution that if brought in too quickly, would cause more problems than it would solve. “ (And) there are not that many people in the business of pumping and disposing of sewage and the ones that there are are very busy. “Plus, how many lagoons are there to pump this stuff into?” • • • After South Frontenac passed a bylaw regulating the use of fireworks — which was in response to several complaints and emails, the Township received three emails bemoaning the changes and expressing fond childhood memories of family fireworks displays, mainly on Bob’s Lake. This prompted Coun. Norm Roberts to muse: “Before, they complain about the fireworks. We pass a bylaw regulating them and now they complain about that. “You just can’t win.” •••
In response to proposed changes to fencing bylaws, Coun. Mark Schjerning noted that there was a distinct bias towards the Imperial System of Measurement . . . Schjerning suggested a move towards metric might be appropriate in the 21st Century. ••• In response to an Association of Municipalities of Ontario, South Frontenac pledged $100 towards relief for Syrian refugees. Dep. Mayor John McDougall said that while $100 didn’t seem like much, it was important to get behind the AMO motion quickly and that the figure could easily be revised at some point in the future. ••• A notice of motion made by Coun. Wayne Sleeth was deferred as the councilor was absent from the meeting. Sleeth’s motion was in direct response to Canadian Solar/Suncor proceeding with an application for the Collins Lake Solar project despite a “clear and overwhelming lack of support from the community and this Council.” Canadian Solar’s application was for a seven megawatt installation rather than the 13 megawatt originally proposed. Sleeth’s motion in part reads: “This Council declines to entertain or support any future solar project proposals from either of these two firms (and) that staff be directed to inform Canadian Solar, Suncor and the IESO of this decision.” • • • CAO Wayne Orr introduced Sherry Corneil, who joins the Township staff as human resources/legislative compliance officer.

In Our Opinion
‘Progress’ is usually just a sounds-good word for greed Gazette Column — There seems to be a lot of ‘development’ things on the go right now (of course things will slow down now that summer is over). But whether its wind farms, solar farms, condominiums or what-haveyou, the number of projects year-toyear seems to be increasing. Some would call this ‘progress.’ But perhaps, and this would be as good a time as any, we really should stop ourselves and ask how much of this ‘progress’ is really a good thing. Yes, it would be nice to have jobs for all the younger people who (anecdotally speaking) usually have to leave the area to find work. And if a new condominium project would guarantee half a dozen full time jobs for our youth, that would be one thing. But other than one custodian/grounds keeper job, the only jobs these projects provide are short-
term construction jobs, most of which are filled by people from outside the community. And these supposedly ‘green energy’ installations, well, they’ll make a lot of money for somebody (notice how most, if not all of the proposals come from rather large corporations formed to take advantage of new governmental rules) but not much of it is going to filter down to the pockets of you or me. Back in the ’50s, after all the soldiers had come back from the Second World War, married and started families, there was this concept called ‘progress.’ There was a need for new homes, and schools, and roads and all sorts of stuff. There were jobs for everybody making this stuff too. But things changed. Has anybody ever taken the time to notice that after an awful lot of those who built all the ‘progress’ stuff were done their working lives, they as often as not wanted to retire to the country? Indeed, the vast majority of those of us who live in the country chose to do so. We chose it because the life-
Kanata Kourier-Standard
style is much more relaxed than that of our urban/suburban brethren. In other words we chose to live in an area where there were fewer people, businesses and buildings. But there are those who would change all that. Some, albeit misguidedly, still seem to think that ‘progress’ is, in itself, a desirable pursuit. To them it becomes a selfevident truth. Thankfully, most of these morons don’t get too much of a say in things. But by far and away, those who embrace ‘progress’ are doing so for one reason and one reason alone — profit. It may be couched in such warmfuzzy wording such as communitybuilding or affordable housing or some such thing, but that’s merely a reasoning that sounds good. Money is what these people want and they really don’t care who loses so they can get it. Those of us who grew up in small town Ontario either stayed or moved back because this is the lifestyle we like. It is not progressive to turn rural beauty into a bunch of wind farms, condominiums or starter castles.
#Imagining the future Editorial – As the 2015 federal election quickly approaches, many Canadians are thinking about the future of their country. Some are hoping for a continuation of the current government, while others are hoping for a change. In the past few weeks a group has emerged on Twitter with the hashtag #ImagineOct20th. According to their website, the group aims to “promote the collective concept of a new Canadian chapter. They want to see a change in government, but more important they want to combat voter apathy and encourage everyone who can to actually go to the polls and vote. This message is one that saturates many elections and yet voter turnout is still embarrassing in Canada. According to Elections Canada, in 2011 only 61.1 per cent of the population in Canada voted. Of the 24,257,592 eligible voters in the country only 14,823,408 actually went to the polls and had their voice heard. In terms of demographics, #ImagineOct20th is targeting younger voters and encouraging people in cities across the country to organize concerts and gatherings to promote the idea of change in Canada. Concerts and speaking events have been organized in Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary and other major Canadian cities and are being promoted through the hashtag and website. The hope is that these events will create a movement that will help create change. The group is also asking followers of #ImagineOct20th to tweet about their visions for Canada. They are aiming to promote more conversation about the election and the issues that are facing many Canadians. Some comments are positive while others are more negative, but they are getting people talking. In the coming weeks more debates will be taking place, including a number of local all-candidates meetings/debates. We encourage community members to attend these meetings, meet the candidates and ask them what they envision as the future for the country. Perhaps even ask them to #ImagineOct20th and what they see, but above all engage and get informed. This election is important and so is your vote.

Segsworth said staff have had discussions with the affected land owners. “The first property is required to realign the intersection of Main Street at Bellrock Road,” he said. “The owner has agreed to sell the land at the same purchase price of $0.25/square foot that he was charged in 2010 to purchase the unopened road allowance that is part of this parcel of land. “The second property is required for drainage purposes of our designed outlet locations (and) when the owner was approached by staff, she had indicated an interest in purchasing a portion of the current road allowance.” Segsworth said sufficient funds had already been budgeted for the purchase of the first tract of land and no funds would be required for the second tract as it is an even exchange of land. The tender for the reconstruction project was awarded at the Aug. 4 meeting to Crains Construction Ltd. in the amount of $1,289,522.10 including HST. The project involves asphalt resurfacing and
new sidewalks on Mill Street, Levesque and First Lake Roads. First Lake Road will be reshaped and de-hilled and a four-way stop put in at the intersection with Mill Street. The design also includes new curbs and gutters on First Lake Road and Mill Street and standing water issues will be addressed with the construction of a number of ditches and swales. At public meetings in February and May, residents were concerned about the need for new sidewalks, the cost of maintaining sidewalks in the winter, whether trees would have to be removed and whether micro-blasting needed in a few locations would affect local wells. Segsworth said the concerns were addressed for the 11 properties that would be directly affected by the project. “This plan is consistent with the village revitalization we have done in Battersea and Perth Road Village and it meets our goals of trying to build for the future,” Segsworth said at the time. The project is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016.

Voicing poverty and social justice issues (Above) Shout Sister, led by Georgette Fry, joined a large crowd which gathered in front of Kingston City Hall to commemorate 20 years of silent vigils by the Sisters of Providence, along with other Kingstonians, who have gathered on the steps of Kingston City Hall, every Friday since 1995. The vigil was an act of solidarity, a way to show opposition and give a voice to poverty and social justice issues in the province and the country. The vigils quickly became a weekly affair, but on Sept. 17, after 20 years, they held their final vigil. Versatile band does more than sing the blues The thing about Jamie is that she sometimes appears to be in multiple places with multiple incarnations at the same time. She’s definitely broken a lot of ground with many musicians. She’s pushed musical limits in the birth place of many the post punk icon at locales like The Rivoli, Quoc Te, Larry’s Hideaway, and Iguana Lounge in Toronto, The Underground in Ottawa and Banana Obscuri in Quebec. After hearing and seeing Jamie perform in one of her past bands, broadcaster Lynette Fortune wrote: “Emerging out of Daphne’s Purple

Enchanté – Jamie Browning epitomizes quirky. She’s a master of the blues. And jazz. And punk. And country. The Toronto-based vocalist and songwriter, along with her partner, drummer Iain Green, form the core of indie band Blues Element. The music is hard to classify, not a good thing for tempting the suits (i.e., recording company execs). Their new CD, Halfway Home, is as indie and unclassifiable as you can get. They favor the sounds of jazz. They just don’t cling to labels. So why the name Blues Element? “Iain came up with that,” said Jamie. “It seemed vague enough, but interesting. Jazz is full of blues, and blues is full of jazz. I have nothing against a bluesy wailing, moany voice, but it’s not the way I sing.” She explained that some blues fans have taken issue with her being more of a jazzy singer. “And the new album is less blues and even less jazz,” she said. “It’s more of all the other stuff I’ve ever done.” In other words, it’s more difficult to classify than ever. “Record labels hate that,” she said. “Marketers hate it. We long ago stopped approaching record companies. They want you to stick to one thing or another. That’s not the way we make art. I can’t do what other people tell me to do.” The music is, however, highly listenable and catchy. She’s been in an odd position for a while, doing a lot of rehearsing in her mind, kind of a Zen thing. “Ian’s a drummer, we don’t jam,” she said. “I’ve been doing song writing in my head.” After messing on a keyboard, she chooses the key. That’s how the latest album came about. “All the musical riffs, I wrote those as well using the keyboard. We wrote a lot of songs in the last few years. Those are the ones we ended up recording. Some are bluesier, some jazzier. We did electronic dance music for a while. I don’t know what’s next.” The last time I saw Jamie perform in Toronto a year or two back was with a country band. Actually, more like an electric honky tonk sound with some twinges of blues. Jamie sits in and performs with them whenever possible. If you want to hear someone perform Jolene better than Miley Cyrus (serious comment, Miley owns the song when she gets into it), listen to
Jamie belt it out. We recently sat chatting in The Rivoli in the heart of Toronto’s Queen Street scene. Jamie’s played there in other incarnations, like Daphne’s Purple Closet, a band Jamie once described as “Gothic, sugar, punk, space-pop, sci-fi, spiders, rats and bats, body paint, politics, strippers and Mohawk haircuts” and which one Toronto newspaper referred to as hauntedelic. When you go to her website, jamiebrowning.com, the home page looks more like you’re entering a Goth club.
Closet is something you’d expect out of a Stephen King novel: a tingling sensation and a piercing scream, a moment of anxiety and a climactic surge. Daphne’s Purple Closet neatly slices the jugular of the listener’s musical sensibilities.” That about sums up Jamie’s approach to her musical craft. Push things to their limit and then, surprise everyone by going in a completely different direction. She’s performed with bands like AmoebA QuichE, FOAM, DropDeadBeats and Truly Ruthless. She’s been honored at First Nations events and Pride rallies. In other words, she’s paid her musical dues and has a lot of street cred. She said that some of the songs on Blues Element’s Halfway Home album came into her thoughts almost fully written. “It’s like they’ve come from some spirit world, handed to me on a silver platter and how dare I refuse that gift. You can’t ignore it.” These days she says she mostly
listens to Internet 80s music. “Iain’s slightly younger and didn’t go through that same 80s scene we did. We’re also seeking a lot of new music. Some fun, some silly, some new dance music. I still listen to old favorites like Bowie, Nick Cave, that sort of thing. Some newer female vocalists like Martha Wainwright are amazing. Same for Lana Del Rey. A lot of world music, Cuban music. Ian also plays in a calypso and reggae band.” She talked about admiring musicians who innovate. “Lou Reid and Neil Young always tried new things. I’ve done jungle and traditional country. The first Blues Element song I wrote was one that came from the spirit world at one of my jungle gigs with 180 bpm (beats per minute) music in the background.” She’s one of the most versatile musical artists around. I know her better than many musicians— disclosure: I was the guitarist in one of her bands. Continued on page 13

Versatile band does more than sing the blues The hauntedelic one. We’d lost touch and, thanks to the Internet, we met up again. Hers, and Iain’s, music is better than ever. Halfway Home, as Jamie said, doesn’t fit a genre. Does any great art fit a genre? The album opens with Man is Gone. How can I describe it? Country surf blues jazz? There’s a surf guitar influence in there. On first play, it’s in the background but quickly grabs the listener. Blues Element meanders through many flavors and influences. They have a sound of their own. Maybe someone who obsesses over these things will name a genre after the band. Her newer and jazzier tunes may not have the jugular-slicing edge of some of her past work like Nursery Rhyme, a sugary sounding melody overtop a tale of woe: a woman who discovers that her lover is a male prostitute; or Panic is On, a song with brilliant but some of the most anxiety-provoking lyrics imaginable, about heroin travelling through a user’s body—“That girl in your room, does she too get the shakes, when the heroin’s late and your head’s in a vice….word on the street is the panic is on.” Her Blues Element song writing is not as slicing, but it’s just as brilliant. Probably catchier than songs about heroin, male prostitutes and the facades of the corporate scene. Her lyrics and voice

have aged like a fine wine. It’s always been difficult to listen to her music without being moved emotionally. Now there’s a positivity that comes with maturity. There’s a near playfulness about much of Blues Element’s music. Whenever I listen to the band, I smile, yet it’s not because it’s feel-good music. There’s pain in songs like Halfway Home. There’s also redemption. “The halfway house is halfway home. They say it’s like a stepping stone….I’ve looked deep within my soul. But what’s the rock without the roll. So many chances came and went. So many chances to repent….I see myself like others do. And I’m afraid of me, too. But I do believe I’ve grown. I do believe I’m halfway home.” There’s a hopefulness to the music. Even the down and out bluesy tunes like “Of All the Mysteries” have a reverence to them. The song itself speaks to a certain hope, despite hard times: “Of all the mysteries, I wonder why there’s so much joy mixed in with such misery.” My hope is that next year, you’ll get to see and hear Jamie Browning, Iain Green and Blues Element perform in Kingston as part of the Street Ballerinas Performing Arts Project. You can check out some of Blues Element’s music at reverbnation.com/blueselement Mark Bergin on Twitter @markaidanbergin

Drive Clean Test? Why your check engine light means everything! Sometimes when you get your sticker renewal documents there is an additional requirement attached. A requirement that says you must have a Drive Clean test completed on your vehicle. Everyone goes through it; IHZ NQRZ WKH VSHFLĂ€FV RI LW ,Q WKH past the test was completed by actually measuring carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions directly from the tail pipe. Bike 4 United Way rolls into Kingston By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – As the United Way fundraising campaign kicked off in Kingston on Sept. 11, a group of passionate Ontario Public Service/agency employees were already busy raising money for services throughout the province. The group, made up of 18 employees from across Ontario, participated in the fourth annual Bike 4 United Way (B4UW) charity ride and on Sept. 17, they rolled into their final destination. “We are so excited to be ending this journey in Kingston and I kind of can’t believe it’s over, said Allison Partington, coordinator of this year’s ride. “Every year we plan a new route and this year we did about 900 kilometers from Guelph to Kingston. The group made stops in Goderich, Owen Sound and Cobourg along the way and camped in provincial parks each night. They also took the opportunity to visit dif-
ferent United Way agencies along the way. “We had a chance to see where the funds we are raising go and who they benefit, said Partington. “It was great to meet new people and see the impact that we are making through this ride. Over the past four years the B4UW charity ride has raised over $150,000 for the United Way and this year the group aims to raise another $25,000. At the end of this year’s race the group had already raised a quarter of their goal. “We’ll definitely reach the goal, said Partington. “Even though the race is over our work isn’t. Of the 18 riders participating this year, 10 were returning riders while eight were new to the ride, including Kingstonian Stephen Elliott. “I was looking for a new challenge and this seemed to fit, explained Elliott, a treasury board secretariat in Kingston. “I was really happy with how well I did on the
ride. It was challenging at times but it was worth it in the end. I actually started to feel stronger each day. Elliott also enjoyed the team aspect of the race and getting up each morning, making breakfast and getting on the road again. “It kind of felt like a vacation at times; we were outdoors, enjoying the scenery, and enjoying each other too, he said. “It was even better knowing that it was for a great cause. The United Way does some great things for different communities across the province and it was really great to see the impact the money can have. Elliott looks forward to participating in the race again next year and he hopes others will join in too. “It was a great experience. It was certainly challenging at times, but overall it was great. For more information about B4UW visit www.b4uw.ca

Community members encouraged to embrace culture and discover their inner artists By Hollie Pratt-Campbell hpratt-campbell@perfprint.ca
When most people think of art, something along the lines of painting, sculpture, or perhaps theatre probably comes to mind. But what about pairing dance, martial arts, acrobatics and music for an entirely different kind of artistic performance? “It’s a really amazing, intense experience even just to watch artists perform, notes Kingston Arts Council executive director Bebhinn Jennings of Capoeira, a Brazilian art form that Kingstonians will have a chance to try out for themselves Sept. 27 at this year’s Culture Days event. As always, the Arts Council is heavily involved in organizing Culture Days activities in Kingston. They’re also hosting a Daybreaker Dance Party at the Tett Centre at 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 25 (which has the distinction of being the very first Culture Days event to take place this year across Canada), as well as an activity that invites people to create a post card to their creative future. “They’ll leave the post card here and then we mail it back them coming up to January, a reminder for their creative future for the new year, Jennings explains. As for the Capoeira workshops, which will be led by artists from Ottawa, Jennings hopes to attract an intergenerational crowd; they’re
open to anyone aged 13 and up. “What’s really exciting is when you have a 13 year old with a 63 year old, she says. “That can create some real magic. If martial arts and acrobatics aren’t your thing, you can still participate in the musical and percussive aspects of Capoeira. “The artists are going to be bringing in musical instruments as well, so this will allow everyone of all skill levels to be there and be participating. Even if that’s banging a tambourine and being involved that way then that’s great. She explains that part of the goal of Capoeira – and Culture Days as a whole- is to give community members opportunities to find new ways of interacting with art. “It’s a new experience and understanding of an amazing art form that you may not have seen in Kingston - just expanding horizons for what is possible and what art actually means. Indeed, Jennings notes that she has been amazed at how much is happening on the Kingston arts scene since moving from Toronto for the executive director job in early August. She encourages everyone in the community to come out and engage in whatever way most interests them. “There’s a real undercurrent of culture in this city in every facet of amateur, emerging and professional
arts and community arts and arts education‌ I came at the perfect time for the festival season - it was just like festival, festival, festival. And people want to be active and engaged, so I’m really enjoying
my time here so far. I’m excited to meet more people and learn more about what’s really happening. Culture Days is a national event that encourages Canadians to develop a love of culture and make a
habit of incorporating it into their everyday lives. It takes place Sept. 25-27, and there are dozens of events taking place in Kingston. For more information and a full listing, visit www.culturedays.ca.
The Ottawa Capoeira group Grupo de Capoeira DendĂŞ do Recife demonstrates the art form. They will be running workshops in Kingston Sept. 27 as part of Culture Days.

Open Mike
ȹȹ
Cliff Rines took the stage with the house band of Jim McPherson, Adam Lake and Lester Whan at Oso Hall last weekend as the Oso Rec Committee began its series of Open Mike Sessions to raise funds for the new outdoor rink. The project is in good shape as boards were purchased from a donation by a local snowmobile association that left some funds left over. The plan is to raise enough for piping that would allow for artificial ice. The next Open Mike is scheduled for Oct. 17 from 1-4 p.m. Photo/Craig Bakay

Coalition works to spread the word that ‘Hydro One is not for sale’ By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Earlier this month, Kingston city council joined over 130 other municipalities across Ontario when they voted on a motion to support the continued operation of Hydro One as a publicly owned asset. This vote, which passed unanimously, comes as speculation grows that the Ontario government wants to sell 60 per cent of Hydro One, privatizing the service – something many Ontarians are strongly opposed to. In support of this opposition and in an effort to raise more awareness about the facts surrounding the issue, the Citizens Coalition Against Privatization (CCAP) held a public meeting in Kingston on Sept. 16. “These info sessions have been hap-
pening across the province and the latest polls show that 83 per cent of Ontarians are opposed to the sale of Hydro One and opposed to privatization,” said David Lundy, a member of CCAP. “Residents know it will cost There’s them more money and it will decrease their level of service and nobody wants that.” According to Lundy, the price of electricity has already gone up 13 per cent since 2003 and is set to go up another 16 per cent. Lundy is also concerned with the impact further increases will have on businesses. “One in 20 businesses say that if this increase happens and if privatization happens then they will have to close their doors and that is unacceptable,” he said. “This is a very bad deal 613-546-8885 no matter which way you look at it. It
doesn’t work and it just doesn’t make sense.” Lundy pointed to other communities in Canada that have experienced privatization as proof of what could happen here in Ontario. “The places that have privatized services, like Nova Scotia, actually have the poorest service and the highest prices,” he said. “These areas also experience more outages.” At the public meeting Lundy was joined by local councillors, experts in

the hydro industry and approximately 30 community members who are all concerned about the future of Hydro One. Local activist, Smoky Thomas urged everyone in the room to be outspoken about their views. “If we lose this battle and Kathleen Wynne sells 60 per cent of Hydro One then the privatization of other services will just come like a tsunami,” said Thomas. “This is really important. We need to keep going and voicing our op-
position and keep fighting.” For those who want to help and aren’t sure where to start, Lundy recommends signing petitions, calling MPs and maybe even starting local grass roots groups. “The sale hasn’t happened yet,” he said. “More opposition needs to be heard and that starts at community meetings like this.” For more information about the Citizens Coalition Against Privatization (CCAP) visit www.hydronotforsale.ca

This Christmas was a different and memorable one for Mary Lifestyle - Was it really so long ago, on that special Christmas morning when everything was the same as other Christmas mornings, but so very different on looking back? That special day, of course, didn’t allow for special privileges. We still had early morning chores to do, we had to have a full breakfast, the kitchen had to be redded up, and we had to be fully dressed, and ready for church, all before we got near the Christmas tree propped in a corner of the kitchen. The tree was always in the kitchen, even though the blasts from the old Findlay Oval, caused it to shed, and leave it with pretty scant branches by the time Christmas morning rolled around. Putting up the tree in the parlour, the smallest room in the old log house was never an option. As soon as the first blasts of winter hit Northcote, the room was closed up with a rolled braided rug shoved tight against the door to keep out the draft, and it would stay that way until the snow was gone. So there was the tree, propped in a
corner by the icebox, anchored with wires into the wainscoting to keep it from falling over. Finally, we had done the chores, had our breakfast, we were dressed for church, and Father moved over to the tree, sat down on the floor, and made a great pretense of not being able to ready the cards Santa had attached to each parcel. On other Christmas mornings, we were handed out stockings first. These weren’t the fancy red felt stockings you could buy at the Dime Store for ten cents...these were Father’s grey work socks, each with a name attached to the top. No, that morning, we were handed the parcels first. There were the usual hand-knit mitts, a small book...we always could count on a book...and a small toy. I remember mine as if it were handed to me yesterday...it was a small game of Chinese checkers. It looked very much like the very same game I had seen in the Dime Store weeks before. But I was thrilled. Especially when I found it wrapped inside my very first pair of long white stockings!!! Such luxury was simply beyond me! I had never owned a pair of white stockings before. Finally, all that was left were the five stockings. As Father picked the first one up, he told us we were not to look inside until everyone had his
stocking in his hand. It all sounded very mysterious to me, but it added to the excitement. I knew for a fact there would be an orange in the toe. We always got an orange - our oncea-year orange! When Father was sure we each had our stockings, he gave us the nod that we could dig into them. I couldn’t understand why we all had to do it at once, the stockings were usually not too interesting, but that morning, Father and Mother seemed more excited that any of us five children. The first thing we found was an envelope with our name on it. It was Mother’s writing, and the envelope was the kind we used back then - flimsy and blue lined. Well, let me tell you, when we ripped into the envelope, you could hear the yells in Renfrew. Inside each was a crisp $1 bill! Not one of us had ever, in our entire lives, had a $1 bill! I had once been able to amass 33 cents tied in the corner of my hankie and thought I was rich beyond means. But a whole dollar in the form of a bill? Unheard of.
“Where did it come from? I was the first to ask. And then Mother explained it all to us. Uncle Lou, our rich uncle from New York, the one with the big black Buick. The uncle who wore pressed grey flannels. The uncle who put the terrazzo floor in the Waldorf Astoria, had sent Mother a $5 bill, and she was to have it changed at the bank in Renfrew, and each of us five children was to have a whole dollar in our stocking! Mother laughed when she told us how she had to go into the bank with an American $5 bill, and change it into Canadian money...and how the teller had to know all about it. And I knew Mother would have told her about her rich brother in New York, and how good he was to all of us, all the way out there in Northcote. Emerson, Everett and Earl folded their dollars into small squares and squirreled them away into their Sunday pants pockets. Audrey put hers in her shoe, which I thought was a silly place for a dollar bill, but then I knew she would likely show it off
to her friend Iva at church. I knew mine would go into the little drawer of my washstand upstairs...not tied in the corner of my hanky. Oh no! It would be laid out flat under my pile of hankies, and I wouldn’t spend it on something foolish. The rest of what was in our stockings paled in comparison to our crisp $1 bills. In fact, by the time we were in the sleigh on the way to the Lutheran Church in Northcote, I couldn’t remember a thing in my stocking, except of course the $1 bill. And the orange. May I take this opportunity to wish all of you the most merriest of Christmases. And my prayer is that you will be surrounded by loved ones, and remember the true message in this joyous time of year. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Go to https://www.smashwords.com and type MaryRCook for e-book purchase details, or if you would like a hard copy, please contact Mary at wick2@sympatico.ca.

dragged into a complicated heist scheme. Anna and her accomplices have a plan to rob their former employer, Russian mobster Arkady Karasov (Radivoje Bukvic). They don’t just want to take all of Arkady’s money, they want to destroy him, and Frank is now a key part of their plans. The Transporter Refueled isn’t unwatchable. It has a certain amount of eye-candy, and some interesting fight sequences that were hallmarks of the original film. There’s also the spectacular car chases which you have to have, or why did you bother to call this film The Transporter. Beyond that the film has huge holes in it. There are whole sequences that

start at point A then jump to point C or D or even E, and you have no idea how it happened. It’s terrible film making plain and simple. The acting is lack luster at best. Ed Skrein has the look and the presence, and he certainly acquits himself well in the fight scenes. The trouble is he looks like he’s doing his best Jason Statham impersonation, and it’s not as good as the real thing. Loan Chabanol is a block of wood albeit an attractive block of wood. Radivoje Bukvic is playing your typical stock villain. There’s nothing special about the character and nothing special about the performance. Ray Stevenson’s character is by far the most entertaining. As Frank

Sr. he’s the old retired spy with a trick or two still up his sleeve. Stevenson has some fun with the role, but it’s by no means enough to save this movie. The real problem with The Transporter Refueled isn’t that Jason Statham isn’t in it, or even that parts of it made no sense. The real problem is that it’s boring. All of this has been done before, and it was done better in the original film. If you are going to re-boot a film franchise like The Transporter you had need to bring a lot more to the table than the same old and tired car chases and stunt fights. Imagine an alternate reality where Jason Statham doesn’t exist. The Transporter still gets made, but it’s not as good. The Transporter Refueled is that movie from that alternate universe. In this completely unnecessary and unwanted reboot we meet a younger Frank (Ed Skrein). He still has his car, his suit and his rules, but he also has his father Frank Sr. (Ray Stevenson). His father is recently retired and visiting his son in the South of France. During his father’s visit Frank gets a call for a job. It seems simple enough until the client, Anna (Loan Chabanol), shows up with two other women. It would seem they’ve just robbed a bank, and are making Frank the getaway driver. Frank refuses until Anna shows him his father being held captive. Frank and his father have been

1980 Camaro Z28 a blast from the past! Terry Ford of Mountain, Ontario, writes: “I saw this Camaro
at my next door neighbour’s house for about four years. We came to a deal with a very reasonable price around 2013 and I hooked it to my tractor and brought it home. Many parts came along with it. My mom had passed away a year before and
left me a little money. This was the only way I could take on this project. “I borrowed a welder and went to it. It took about two hundred hours of welding spread across four months to weld in a new floor

from the dash to the trunk along the frame rails, also new springs, bushings, ball joints, steering box, brakes all around, and much more in the end. “It passed its safety test and I started driving it. I discovered the motor to be a bit lazy so I pulled it out and rebuilt it with a new crank, cam, Edelbrock intake, Holley carb, headers and so on. “Now I enjoy spinning the wheels and going to car shows and cruise nights. I’m 56 now and this car brings me back to my youth. It also means a date night with my wife. I’m having lots of fun. I attended the Father’s Day car show in Kemptville, where 1500 cars came that day. I also enjoy Wednesday nights at the Rideau Carleton Raceway. As many as 300-400 cars show up on a good night.” The Camaro dates back to 1967, when GM launched it in response to the astonishing sales success of the Mustang, which appeared in April of 1964. The Camaro styling was just right with a long hood and short rear deck, and could be bought with a thrifty six cylinder or several choices of V8 engines. A hot performance package option was the Z28, which won 18 of 25 Trans-Am races that year. Only

602 Z28s were produced for 1967, making this the rarest of the rare. Production quickly climbed to 7199 for ’68 and 19,014 for ’69. The second generation of Camaros arrived in mid-1970 with sleek low-slung styling and plenty of horsepower. The name was dropped for two years (’75 and ’76) and then revived in 1977. The emphasis was now on handling and not just acceleration, perhaps prompted by the oil crisis of the mid-70s. The ’77 Z28 arrived mid-year, making this model somewhat rare with only 14,349 built. Sales took off the following year with 54,907. Terry Ford’s 1980 Camaro Z28 is one of 45,137 built that year. I’m always looking for more stories.
