News — Frontenac County Council began its 2016 budget deliberations in earnest last week with a Committee of the Whole meeting in Sydenham. This first meeting was an opportunity to review some budgetary principles and agreed-upon procedures, such as limiting any levy increases to the Ontario Consumer Price Index for August of the year preceding the budget (1.2 per cent for August 2015) and a philosophy of ‘yesterday’s services at today’s prices. It was also a chance for the various departments involved at County (Fairmount Home, Frontenac Paramedic Service, Planning and Economic Development and Corporate Services) to present their ‘wish lists’ for projects with varying degrees of import and length of budgetary impact. At this point, everything was presented with the understanding that, if approved, these discretionary projects would only be passed on to be debated further at future Council sessions when the actual budget gets hammered out. As such, once presented the committee assigned each to one of three categories: Delete, Park or Referred to budget. If all the proposals were accepted, the price tag would be $615,000, stretched out to 2025, but not all would have an impact on the levy (ie, taxation) as other funding sources such as billing the Townships, partnerships with the City of Kingston or Gas Tax Funding would come into play. There were no projects assigned to the Delete

bin. Two projects were put in the Park category, a septic system analysis for Fairmount Home and membership in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence City Initiatives. Eight projects were put in the Referred to budget category and two (work order software for the finance department and a disability management contract for human resources) were yet to be assigned owing to the time constraints of the fivehour meeting and Councilors’ other commitments. The eight projects moving on to Council discussions included a Groundwater Under Direct Influence study for Fairmount Home’s water supply; a logistics vehicle for Frontenac Paramedics Service; advancing economic development; a sustainability reserve allocation; a communal services project; K & P Trail land acquisition; infield Communications Gap Analysis and membership in the Community School Alliance. While it’s unclear just what will happen to the ‘parked’ projects, membership in the schools alliance has been a pet project of Warden Denis Doyle, even to the point of funding it through the Warden’s Discretionary fund, which in turn is funded by the levy. The cost is $1,000 per year. Contrast this with the $3,000 price tag of membership in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence City Initiatives which is also funded through the levy. “We need to have a voice when it comes to the closure of rural schools, Doyle said. “Closure of a school is a major impact to a rural community and the school boards don’t seem to consider this in their decisions.

Sydenham’s Haunted Barn is a family affair mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Events - It’s almost that time of year again – time for costumes, candy, jack o’ lanterns and of course Sydenham’s Haunted Barn. For the past five years the haunted barn has been an attraction for community members of all ages and it all started with a simple request. “My granddaughter Dacey, who was eight at the time, asked me if she could have a haunted house,” explained Bev McNeill, owner of the haunted barn. “She wanted to haunt nannie’s house, but we thought the barn would be better.” The McNeill family has always loved Halloween, but as the kids in the family got older and were less into the holiday, the haunted barn seemed like a perfect way to continue the fun. “It became a new tradition that we all looked forward to,” said Lauren Stinson, one of the creators of the barn. “Each year we put more and more effort in and it gets more and more exciting and scary.” The barn, located in the back of ‘Nannie’s’ house, now gets transformed each October into a haunted house of sorts complete with a maze set up, dramatic lighting, smoke, music and an outdoor graveyard. In the beginning the haunted barn didn’t have a theme and everyone who
participated in the hijinks (mostly family members) just came in whatever costume they wanted, but as the years progressed more thought has been put into the event. “We’ve had everything from zombies to an asylum and it is so much fun to do the makeup and costumes each year,” explained Cathy Richmond, another founding member of the haunted barn. This year’s theme is more “classic horror” complete with vampires and coffins. “My husband made a coffin for his daughter, something he never thought he’d be doing,” joked Richmond. “We’ve never done vampires before and we are really looking forward to it.” Each year the event attracts a substantial crowd of around 200-225 people from throughout the community and many of them start asking about the event well before October. “We have people asking about it all the time and wondering what we are doing this year - we’ve got a good following now,” said Richmond. “The community seems to love it as much as we do so that is great.” The event only runs for one night each year on Halloween, but Richmond would like to see that increase in future years. “It is hard to get people to commit to it for more than one night and every-
one volunteers their time, but it would be great to do it more.” Although the event takes a lot of time and effort to plan, Richmond and Stinson love doing it year after year. “We love planning all of it each year and coming up with new and scary ideas,” said Stinson. “Seeing the reactions on Halloween night and hearing
the screams make it all worthwhile in the end.” Richmond enjoys all the planning too and encourages members of the community who haven’t experienced the Haunted Barn before to come check it out this year. “Everyone loves being scared, especially on Halloween and we try to
make it a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s just a great night.” The Haunted Barn in Sydenham is located at 2932 Rutledge Road in Sydenham and is free to the public. It will be open Halloween night from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information look for ‘Haunted Barn Sydenham’ on Facebook. TICO#50007364

Frontenac County considers aging infrastructure at Fairmount Home in 2016 budget By Craig Bakay Reporter
News — One staff proposal for the 2016 Frontenac County budget that occupied a great proportion of the discussions last week as County Council met as Committee of the Whole in Sydenham was the aging infrastructure at Fairmount Home.
While the previous Council was preoccupied with construction of the new auditorium and the mitigation of absenteeism among employees, under the administration of Interim Director, this Council may be forced to look more at the nuts and bolts of water and sewer. Silver presented plans for studies of both of the crucial elements of the
seniors’ residence. The proposal to look at the septic system was placed in the ‘parked’ category, meaning it won’t get the highest priority when deliberations shift to the Council format and real decisions are made. Still, Silver argued strenuously for its inclusion. “The septic system is a historical

Loose newspapers will end up kilometers away and empty water bottles tend to gravitate into the ditches and treeline. Not overfilling your box and crushing your bottles will make them more compact and less likely to fly around and the simple act of putting a rock on top of your newspapers will hold them down. An alternative would be to put your newspapers flat in a grocery bag, it holds a lot and they are contained. Please keep our environment in mind when recycling.

source of concern,” he said. “Do we really need a study or should we just go ahead and replace it?” asked Coun. Ron Higgins. “There are a lot of bathrooms (in Fairmount), said Silver. “Replacing the system will take a lot of preparation. “Then too, the system may not be at the end of its life span (and) if you spend $100,000, you might get 10 more years out of it.” There are 96 resident bathrooms (shared and private) in Fairmount home as well as enough bathrooms to accommodate 134 staff, contract workers and guests. However, the request for a plan to study the water supply met with more approval. Silver said the current well system comes under the heading of Groundwater Under Direct Influence, a designation he’d like to see removed. “I think this will be a cost-savings project eventually,” he said. “For example, conceivably we could move to monthly turbidity testing instead
of daily.” There could also be savings if chlorine treatments could be reduced or eliminated, presumably with the inclusion of ultraviolet light systems. “I would be shocked if they told us we could get rid of chlorine entirely,” said Coun. Ron Vandewal. “And we can’t count on the system water getting to Fairmount because they just did an extension up Division Street and Montreal Street. “They’re not going to do it (extend the system to Fairmount even though technically it is in the City of Kingston) tomorrow.” “Anything you can do to get rid of chlorine, do it,” said Coun. John Inglis. The total cost of the study would be $17,000. The cost would be shared on a previously arranged formula between Frontenac County and the City of Kingston meaning that the County would be responsible for $6,000 and the balance of $11,000 being paid by the City.

News — It’s been a banner year construction-wise in Central Frontenac Chief Building Official Jeremy Neven told Council at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. The construction value for September alone was $610,564 (which compares with $188,648 in 2014 and $194,770 in September of 2013). To date there has been $5,643,35 worth of construction compared with $3,642,522 in 2014 and $4,360,592 when the new school was being built. “You have to look back quite a few years to find anything comparable, Neven said. “The number of permits to date are about the same as they usually are but the projects are much more involved. When asked to attribute the increase, Neven said: “There’s no trend I can point to, . . . except people moving in from Northern Alberta (jokingly referring to new Public Works Manager John Badgley, who is originally from Tweed but spent
several years as highway operations manager in Grimshaw, in Alberta’s Peace River Country. ••• At the request of Dep. Mayor Jamie Riddell, Council took a look at the original plans for the Olden Ball Field in Mountain Grove, which has had varying stages of development for the past couple of years. “Depending on budget constraints, it could be completed in three years, but more likely five years,â€? said Chief Building Official Jeremy Neven. The plan was first presented in 2010 at a then-cost of $340,000 which included lights, parking lot, roadway, fences, benches, dugouts, canteen and playground facility. ••• Mayor Frances Smith presented some ominous figures to Central Frontenac Council during her customary report. “We’ve just heard what OPP costs are going to be and the charge is going up to $305 per household from $234 per household, a 4 per cent increase,â€? Smith said. “That means it will cost $98,628 for policing per month or $1,183,436 per year.
••• This year, 609 residents used the Township’s amnesty garbage load program. That amounts to 16 per cent of the population, which saved $20,464 in tipping fees. ••• Council approved Treasurer Michael McGovern’s recommendation for a five-year loan agreement with RBC to cover the Township’s $1 million portion of the $3 million Fifth Lake Road project. The other $2 million was provide by a federal Small Rural and Northern Municipal Infrastructure Funding grant. The loan payments were previously approved in the 2015 budget. ••• Brushing has been completed on Davy, Babcock, Richmond, Stinchcombe, Fox and Brock Roads, Road Supervisor Steve Reynolds told Council. They intend to continue brushing throughout the fall until snow falls, he said. Road crews have also been busy dealing with beaver damage throughout the Township and crews will soon begin installing plowing equipment on trucks for the upcoming winter season.

Kingston’s Royal Canadian Air Cadets hope to celebrate 75 years with 75 cadets By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – The 58th Royal Canadian Air Cadets have been active in Kingston for many years – 75 to be exact – and to celebrate this milestone they are planning a year of activities. “It is a celebration year from end to end culminating with our parade in May of 2016,” explained Commanding Officer Capt. David Peterson. “We will have all of the ex-cadets from different decades coming out to join us and we just want to celebrate with everyone who has been a part of this amazing program over the years.” The squadron’s 75th year officially began in September as the group welcomed new and returning cadets to their program. Each year the air cadets
see a good number of new members, but this year they are hoping to see even more. “Some of the cadets are new this year but about 60 per cent of them are returning cadets,” said Peterson. “We are seeing growth, but we’d like to see more and I’ve put the challenge to current cadets to help recruit new cadets. We’d like to see 75 members by the parade in May.” In addition to the parade, the cadets are also working with a similar squadron from the UK to organize an exchange in the new year. “They are also celebrating their 75th year this year,” said Peterson. “We’ve formed a friendship through Facebook and social media with them over the years and we thought this would be a great opportunity to celebrate together.
We will go over there in February and they will send a group over for our celebrations in May.” The 58th Royal Canadian Air Cadets is run in conjunction with the Canadian Cadet Organizations and sponsored by the Air Force Association of Canada. The program is youth based and includes anyone that is 12-19 years of age. The program works to promote citizenship, leadership and introduce youth to the Canadian Forces . Meetings are held weekly on Tuesdays and during meetings, members learn about drill training, aviation, rifle training and much more. “There are so many opportunities and members can do more than just attend Tuesday meetings,” said Peterson. “We have orienteering activities, leadership camps, aviation exercises – they can really participate in things seven days a week if they want.” David Martin knows about these opportunities firsthand and after joining the Air Cadets six years ago he has now advanced to Warrant Officer 1st Class and earned his pi-

In Our Opinion
Once again, the top rated prime time TV shows are soap operas, but with more death
Column — After a week(end) of binge watching The Walking Dead in an effort to get caught up for the pending Season 6 premiere, something dawned on me — this damned thing is a soap opera. In fact, the top two rated shows on cable right now are soap operas, A Game of Thrones being the other one. Now this may come as a shock to the post-reality, fantasy-loving, drop-out millennials who (apparently) are driving these ratings. No self-respecting 20-something these days would admit to watching soaps, but A Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have more in common with General Hospital and All My Children than they do with Lord of the Rings or World War Z. Wikipedia defines ‘soap opera’ as “a serial drama on television or radio which features related story lines about the lives of many characters. The stories often focus on emotional relationships to the point of melodrama (and) the term originated from
such dramas typically being sponsored by soap manufacturers in the past. Perhaps we should define ‘melodrama’ as well (also from Wikipedia): “a melodrama is a dramatic or literary work in which the plot, typically sensational and designed to appeal strongly to the emotions, takes precedence over detailed characterization. And appealing to the emotions is what both The Walking Dead and A Game of Thrones are all about. You could the hear the cheer across North America when (King) Joffrey Baratheon got his at The Purple Wedding as well as the collective “oh no! when The Governor executed Herschel Greene with Michonne’s katana. One thing that does kind of separate A Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead from As The World Turns or Dallas is all the deaths. Not that previous soaps didn’t kill characters off (characters tend to die in afternoon soaps when the actor portraying them asks for more money), just that it doesn’t seem to be a major plot driver. A Game of Thrones averages about 14 deaths per episode. The number in The Walking Dead is undoubtedly higher, but then some people don’t consider being turned into a zombie as ‘death’ per se. But,
Kanata Kourier-Standard
c’mon, “DEAD is in the title. This isn’t the first time the soap opera format has featured a fantasy/fantastical theme. In the ’60s, Dark Shadows, about the Collins family of Collinsport, Maine featured a main character who was a vampire (Barnabas Collins) as well as witches, werewolves, ghosts, zombies, time travel, parallel universes and even a Frankenstein’s monster (Adam). But what separates the two current soaps from even Dark Shadows is the sheer volume of deaths. Still, millions of us will tune in every week to see whose number is up. We can’t even reference the source material (the novels for Game of Thrones, comics/graphic novels for Walking Dead) for clues anymore. After initial attempts to remain relatively faithful to the sources, both shows have taken on a life of their own. But, the show producers know where their bread is buttered and it’s unlikely Rick Grimes or Tyrion Lannister will go down before the series ultimately die themselves. But just a warning to the Dead producers — mess with Michonne and you’re likely to feel my daughter’s katana.

Girl Guides embrace transgender members Editorial –Earlier this month, the Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) proved once again that they are about more than just delicious cookies. The group announced that new guidelines are being put in place to assist in the inclusion of girls and adult members that identify themselves as transgender. “We are committed to supporting an environment where all girls and women feel accepted, said Chief Commissioner of the GGC, Pamela Rice, “We are reassuring that regardless of how a child was born, a girl is a girl. The change in policy has been applauded by many groups, including Gender Creative Kids Canada, who emphasize the need for organizations to focus on how the person might perceive him or herself rather than what genitalia the person was born with. The new policies cover a variety of topics from washroom use to privacy during camping trips, and apply across the entire five to 18 age range the group serves. The new policies are also inclusive of troop leaders who identify themselves as transgender. These new guidelines have been in development for the past two years, according to the GGC, and were initiated in response to a rise in transgender children wishing to take part in guiding activities including one very outspoken transgender teen who called for a cookie boycott a few years ago if policies didn’t change. In the last 100 years, 7 million Canadian girls and women have been involved in Guiding and according to the GGC website their goal has always been to “prepare girls to meet the challenges that they face in their lives head on. Whether it was girls learning to bandage wounds during the First World War or girls today working on their anti-bullying badge, Guiding continually evolves to reflect the needs and interests of contemporary girls and women. These changes should be applauded by everyone and hopefully they inspire other groups and particularly youth groups to follow suit. Inclusion is always important, especially at a young age.

Central Frontenac agrees to signage for private road to cut down on tresspassing Reporter
News — Central Frontenac Council agreed to erect signs at either end of a private road in an effort to cut down on trespassing at its regular meeting last week in Sharbot Lake. The request came from resident Alice Gorter who told Council that her property, as well as her neighbours’ was suffering damage do to an influx of ATVers and weekend hunters. In a letter to the Township dated Sept. 8, Gorter said: “In 2014, a hunt club received Township approval to construct a road from Fifth Lake Road/Mountain Road along the municipal boundary line for a very short distance. This municipal road now leads directly to a long-established road that was
developed by a local landowner for his private use. It is not now, or ever has been, open to the public. “Despite the installation of a gate with a huge Private Property sign attached, the road is being used by the public to access interior lakes and camps with trucks, boats and trailers, and ATVs. This has resulted in heavy damage to our road, our gate being removed from its hinges and the destruction of beaver dams on our property. Gorter said that ATV riders are entering the Wellie Smith Road at McLean and coming all the way through to her property, exiting on Mountain Road. “Perhaps, because the Wellie Smith Road follows the boundary line for some distance, people are unaware that at some point they are leaving municipal property and trespassing on private property, she said. “Four ATV riders that I recently
found on my property said they thought the trail was all on Crown Land. She said two other landowners in the immediate vicinity had similar problems because of the road. “They echoed my tale of woe, she said. “You know, when the land was bought in the ’60s, all that was needed was a handshake and a ‘sure you can cross my land.’ “Nobody had an ATV then. Gorter asked for ‘Not a Through Road’ and ‘No Exit’ signs at the edge of the newly constructed road where it joins the municipal boundary and ‘Stop, Township Property Line Undeveloped at This Point, Road is on Private Property’ at the boundary line off Fifth Lake/Mountain Roads where the road continues onto private land and at the point on Wellie Smith Road where it leaves the boundary line

Sharing a view from the mountaintop participate in the making of the world as we want it to be.” Benson said another reason the play is exciting to stage production now is because there are so many grass roots forces, from the Occupy movement to Idle No More, in the world. “People are standing up for what they believe in and exercising the very rights that form the basis of democracy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was an activist, he was arrested. He was demonstrating and marching all the time. If he came up against a law that was unfair, he broke that law. That is so inspiring. I think the play is meant to say that anybody, not just Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., can do this. Dr. King was amazing and unique but everyone has the potential.” Brett Christopher, Theatre Kingston’s Artistic Producer, offered the director’s role to Benson around Christmas time last year. “When I read it, I said, ‘Yes,’” she said. “Brett wanted to get people of colour on stage in Kingston. This is a story from a particular place and community that is extremely relevant right now. I looked at a list of the number of unarmed black people killed by the police last year. There’s a different edge to doing this play now compared to when it was written.” She said it’s important to
include this kind of information without dampening the inspiration, motivation and hope that’s in the play. “The two actors I have are awesome. Michael was at Stratford for four or five years. Natasha is just out of National Theatre School. Having an opportunity to work with actors who are so hard-working, diligent, talented, intelligent and giving is an absolute joy.” Benson said that the play came to her in a synchronistic moment. “In my own life, it’s strange that I was handed this play,” she said. Daytripper –On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King, Jr., the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, stood on a balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. While standing there, a .30-06 bullet fired from a Remington 760 Gamemaster rifle ended King’s life. We know a lot about what happened after the murder. Despite Dr. King’s own philosophy of non-violence, riots erupted in more than 100 cities. One day earlier, he delivered a speech that, in hindsight, prophesized his own death. “We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.” Born in 1929, by the time he was 26, Martin Luther King, Jr. had completed his Ph.D. Two years later, he became the first president in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), established to provide leadership in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1965, Dr. King helped organize the
pivotal Selma civil rights marches to promote voting rights. By 1968 he was one of the most significant leaders and proponents of non-violent civil disobedience. But what about the time immediately prior to Dr. King’s death? Theatre Kingston’s production of Katori Hall’s play The Mountaintop deals with the immediate time prior to the killing. In the play, an exhausted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Michael Blake) has just given his prophetic speech to striking sanitation workers in Memphis. A maid, Camae (Natasha Mumba), visits him, bringing coffee. They develop a meaningful and intimate conversation during which the audience hears the hopes and fears of Dr. King in this exploration of leadership, legacy and mortality. “Mountaintop is a fantastical reimagining of the last night in Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life,” said the play’s director, Rebecca Benson. “It’s an opportunity to see him as a man and not the saint and icon he became.” She said that the play was written at a time when Barrack Obama was running for presidency of the United States. “There is very much a sense of anticipation and hope about reaching the promised land,” said Benson. “The maid, Camae, is a wonderful character, and there are lots of surprises.” She explained that, on an emotional level, the play offers a transformative experience for the audience. “The character of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. makes a massive journey in a short amount of time. It’s an emotional roller coaster ride for him, and the audience goes along on that ride. “The play is a call to people to reach their potential and to

actor in order to become a better director. At George Brown College in Toronto she went through three years of intensive actor training. She worked as an actor for six years and pursued directing and assistant directing through theatre centres like Soulpepper and Stratford. She returned to school in Ottawa for a Master of Fine Art Degree in directing. As she finished her MFA, her husband was accepted into a PhD program in Glasgow. While in Scotland, the couple became parents to two children. After four years, they returned to Canada, settling in Winnipeg. “All my physical and creative energies went into the kids,” she said. But theatre never leaves someone’s heart. Just over a year ago, Benson and her family moved to Kingston, where she reconnected with Brett
Christopher. The two first met in Toronto during their George Brown College theatre days and had performed in several shows together. In Kingston, it was perfect timing for Benson to take on a couple of productions. She did Auto Show for the Kick & Push Festival in the summer, and, now, she’s thrilled to have the director’s role for The Mountaintop. “It’s a brave play about a man facing his mortality,” she said. “That’s something we all face.” Theatre Kingston’s Mountaintop runs from October 29 to November 15. “I don’t think anybody on Amherst Island has a lot of hope or trust in that estimate: Councillor responds to Minister’s comments about ferries By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News –As ferry headaches continue for residents of Wolfe Island, Amherst Island and Picton, Minister of Transportation, the Hon. Steven Del Duca, hoped to ease the minds of affected residents on Oct. 14; Del Duca announced a November return date for the Wolfe Islander III at a town hall meeting held on Wolfe Island, but Amherst Island Councillor Duncan Ashley says he’ll believe it when he sees it. “We got a definite maybe and that does not please me at all, said Ashley. “This has just gone on to the
point of exhaustion for everyone. I have been the councillor for the island for 20 years now and I’ve never seen anything like this. The Wolfe Islander III was sent to dry dock in Hamilton for repairs this past April and in order to compensate for its departure the remaining ferries in the area – the Frontenac II, the Quinte Loyalist and the Glenora – shuffled to fill the gap. The shuffle essentially cuts the usual passenger capacity in half for Wolfe and Amherst Islands and while the busiest seasons for both may be over, the troubles are not. “We’ve gone through the spring and the summer and now we are en-
joying a bit of a slowdown, but now we are facing cattle leaving the island, said Ashley. “They need to be brought back over and that will take some time. Originally, the Wolfe Islander III was to return on July 1, but a need for extensive repairs has caused delays and repairs are still ongoing. “Photos of the ferry from last Friday show the amount of work that still needs to be done and I am no marine expert, but I strongly doubt it will be back in November, said Ashley. “I don’t think anybody on Amherst Island has a lot of hope or trust in that estimate at this point. On Sept. 24, Ashley made a trip

to Queen’s park along with Mayor Doyle from the Frontenac Islands, Mayor Quaiff from Picton and Mayor Lowry from Loyalist Township to meet with Minister Del Duca and share first-hand the challenges their communities have faced as a result of the dry-dock and ferry arrangements. At the meeting Ashley emphasized the challenges that will arise for residents of Amherst Island should this delay continue. “The winds are starting to pick up and the Quinte Loyalist is not made for the channel it is running in. If we get winds over 50 kilometers an hour consistently the ferry has to shut down. We potentially have a boat

Amherst Island is currently using the much smaller Quinte Loyalist ferry. Photo/Hollie Pratt-Campbell
that could be forced out of service for hours and that leaves us in a bind if there is a medical emergency, said Ashley. After meeting with Del Duca, Ashley and the mayors were assured that more pressure would be put on the issue and that they would be updated accordingly, but no contact was made prior to the town hall meeting on Oct. 14. “That is not the way you run a partnership, Ashley said. “Loyalist Township should have been more included in this process and even though it was a public meeting, we weren’t invited or even really included. Ashley acknowledges that the ferry situation is affecting everyone, but he also points out that the concerns are different in some cases and he feels that has been overlooked. “We are all suffering because of less capacity, but we are in a position where we could have a severe medical issue on the island and no way to help the patient, he said. “We have been offered no solution for this scenario and that is not acceptable. At this point, Ashley hopes to see the ferry return before the winter. “I won’t be happy, but I’ll be less concerned about our situation at that point, he said.

Misspelling misstep left Marguerite in a tizzy around like she had wasps in her pants! She couldn’t wait to be asked to spell. Of course, we had simple words like cat or dog not like the words the upper classes had. Words I had never heard of. Well, the word that stumped Marguerite should have rolled off her tongue like butter. It was the word ‘book’ and instead of ending it with a ‘ k’ , she spit it out so fast, tossing those bottled curls, and ended the word with a ‘c’...spelling it booc! Well, as soon as she said it, she knew she was wrong, and her hand flew to her mouth with such a slap, I was sure you could hear it all over Renfrew County. Well, there were no second chances... not with Mr. School Board sitting at the front of the room! He brought a little wood hammer down on the desk with a thump and Marguerite had to leave the lineup and take to her desk, mumbling all the way. She squirmed in her seat, glared at Joyce and me, as both of us sailed through the simple words found in our
Lifestyle – Marguerite was in a huff. She had just misspelled a word in a spelling bee held at the Northcote School against a school from over near Admaston. So there wouldn’t be any favouritism, both teachers sat on the bench at the back of the room, and a gentleman from the School Board was at Miss Crosby’s desk directing the bee. We were lined up like pigeons on both sides of the one-room school, the visiting school in front of the windows, and those of us from our own school, in front of the blackboard that ran the full length of the room. The Senior Fourths leading both rows, right down to those of us in the lesser grades. Marguerite was between Joyce and me, and she was twitching
FREE YOURSELF…
Primer books. Well, the bee went on for a good part of the afternoon, and the school from near Admaston won, much to Miss Crosby’s dismay. We all had to march across the room and shake hands with the winning team, and say “congratulations”, which didn’t sit well with either Cecil or my brother Emerson. You could see the girls on the other team wince, as the two boys just about crushed the bones in their hands. Marguerite of course, never moved out of her desk. Miss Crosby had bought, out of her own meager earnings, a bag of maple cookies from Briscoe’s General Store, and one of the mothers brought two bottles of Kik, the favourite cola of the day, and all of us were supposed to be on our best behaviour and make sure the visitors got served first, just in
case there wasn’t enough to go around. Well! There was Marguerite right up to the table at the back of the room, grabbed a glass of Kik, took as many cookies as her hand could handle, and headed right up to the man from the School Board. “I knew how to spell that word, and I would have done it right, but the sun was in my eyes from the windows across the room, and I really think that’s why I got mixed up, and I wonder if you would excuse my mistake.” Well, it was time for the usual calm and collected Miss Crosby to take action. She marched right up to Marguerite, took a hold of her arm, removed the cookies from her hand, passed the
glass of Kik over to Grace from Senior Fourth, and ordered Marguerite to sit down and told her she didn’t want to hear a peep out of her until the school day was over! Well, there sat Miss Prim! She glared at the rest of us as if we were dirt on the floor. Her drug store curls, her black Mary Jane shoes, her white stockings, and her store-bought underwear didn’t mean a thing. What cut it with Miss Crosby was honest and good manners. Interested in an electronic version of Mary’s books? Students at RND receive recognition for blood donations By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
News – Many high school students don’t think about donating blood, but students at Regiopolis Notre Dame (RND) Catholic High School, make blood donation a priority. Last year, the school and its blood donor clinics recruited more donors than any other school in the region and on Oct. 16 they received an award and a $150 cheque for their accomplishment. “It is great to get the recognition, said teacher and clinic coordinator Tamie Gaudet. “The students work hard to organize these clinics each year and the money we received will be used for other charitable programs that we run. The program is called the Young Blood for Life Challenge and last year 4,178 new donors donated blood in Canada through the program. In Ontario there were a little over 2000 new donors. “The kids are so enthusiastic about donating and we have students asking in advance when the clinic will be each year, said Gaudet. “They are all a little afraid and a little uncomfortable when it is their first time, but it is so impor-
tant and they realize that. At Regi, 54 units were donated in total last year through clinics and Life Bus runs and they hope to have similar or higher numbers this year. Student organizer, Curtis Canty is a new donor this year and he was excited to contribute for the first time. “I think it is a really great cause and it is a really simple act that can have a big impact, said Canty. “I am a bit nervous, but I am looking forward to it. We have been recruiting people over the past few weeks and encouraging them. There is an initial fear because most people our age haven’t donated before, but we can all do it together. Students must be 17 years of age to donate and have to meet certain criteria on the day of donation. Gaudet does her best to inform students before they come and she encourages anyone who can to donate. “It is really important to get students donating right away and if we can get them to realize how important it is they are more likely to be lifelong donors, she said. For more information about how to donate blood visit www.blood. ca

KCVI students learn about becoming informed and repeat voters News – Students at Kingston Collegiate Vocational Institute (KCVI) learned what it means to be an informed voter last week and then had a chance to take that knowledge with them to the polls. On Oct. 13, students at KCVI had an opportunity to meet their local candidates and ask them questions. All five candidates from the Kingston and the Islands riding were invited and all but the Libertarian candidate attended. Students asked the candidates questions about refugee issues, the environment, Aboriginal women, the TPP and even electoral reform. Students also had an opportunity to get to know the candidates a bit personally and for many students that was very helpful when they went to cast their vote on Oct. 15. “What really helped me make my decision was hearing the candidates talk about themselves and what they wanted to do for the community if they win,” said Leilani Travers, a Grade 10 student at KCVI. “It helped me connect with them more and I realized how important that is as a voter.” The 700 students at KCVI voted as part of the Student Vote program by CIVIX. Their ballots will be cast, along with ballots from over 7,500
other Canadian schools, and results from their votes will be revealed on election night. For teacher Katherine Burra, the experience was all about teaching students how to vote and how to be an informed voter in the hopes of creating habitual voters. “We get them engaged and that is the whole idea - to form the habit of voting,” said Burra. “If people vote once they are much more likely to do it again and we hope to start that even
at this age.” Burra was impressed with the enthusiasm of the students after the allcandidates meeting at KCVI and on ‘Election Day’ and she hopes that carries forward. “We had great feedback from the students and I’ve had parent emails thanking me too,” she said. “Parents actually commented that it was great to have conversations with their kids about party platforms, social issues and the democratic system and that is

great to hear.” For Annika Curtis, 15, the experience was eye opening in terms of learning about different party platforms and she was surprised with what she learned. “I didn’t know a lot about the Green Party going in and I was surprised to learn about their standpoints and see more of their platform,” she said. “I always thought they were only concerned with the environment so it was neat to hear their stance on other issues too.” Other students were surprised that some of the parties are so closely aligned when it comes to major issues. “It was interesting to see that the Green Party, the Liberals and the NDP all seemed to correlate in terms of their ideas,” said student voter Ava
Waugh. “I thought there would be more opposition than there is amongst the candidates.” Students were also interested to learn more about issues they had been discussing in class like the refugee crisis and how parties would respond to this. “We have been discussing it in our civics class and it was cool to hear local politicians speak about it,” said Travers. “It made it easier to understand having studied it.” Overall, Travers felt like she was well informed going to the polls. She was impressed with how easy the voting process was, but still found it a bit nerve-racking. “Voting was pretty easy, but I was wary of my vote because I wanted to make sure I was making the right decision,” she said. “I think I did.” R0013512748

1970 Cutlass Supreme convertible with same owners since new Al and Anne Hamill of Harrow, Ontario, are the proud owners of a fully restored 1970 Olds Cutlass Supreme convertible. Al was studying for his PhD. in Weed Control at Michigan State University in Lansing while his wife Anne worked in the office at the university when they ordered a new 1970 Cutlass Supreme convertible from Starnaman Oldsmobile Inc., a GM dealer near where they lived at the time. It cost $3,561 US, one of 11,354 built that year. It arrived six weeks later on Feb. 28, 1970 in gleaming Sherwood Green and had been built at the GM plant in Lansing. Among the options they did not request, but came anyway was the Dual Gate Shifter that permits the car to be driven as an automatic or stick shift. Al’s dad had owned some Oldsmobiles and in fact Al took his driver’s test on his father’s Olds in 1961. In 1971, Al and Anne moved to Harrow, Ontario, where they still live, and Al landed employment with Agriculture Canada. They drove their new convertible for over 10 years. Then one day while Al was putting the top down, he forgot about a carton in the rear window shelf. That carton shattered the glass rear window into umpteen pieces and Al stopped driving the car. He put it up on blocks at home
and there it remained for 33 years. Two batches of kittens were born on the floor in the back seat while the car remained out of service. Two years ago, Al arranged with JH Restorations in Windsor to perform a frame-off restoration of the convertible. Jesse Henke does work for RM Restorations in nearby Chatham and Al knew the
work would be superb. The odometer at that time had turned over 100,000 and 70 miles, an interesting coincidence considering the car was a ’70. The restoration took a full year and it’s just like new again. Al and Anne drive their car on Thursday evenings through the summer to the cruise nights at nearby Heritage Village. A mutual friend, Jim Founk, arranged
for me to meet Al and Anne at the Lakeside Bakery in Leamington near the end of August to put this story together. That is where we took some photos, including one of Al holding up a seat belt buckle with the name Hamill printed on it. No, the dealer did not put Al’s name there. By another amazing coincidence, that’s the name of the company that manufactured the seat
belts in their car. I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, P.O. Box 255, 25 John Street, Leamington, ON N8H 3W2. Everyone whose story is published in my column receives a free autographed copy of my book: “OLD CAR DETECTIVE FAVOURITE STORIES, 1925 to 1965.”
Al and Anne Hamill with their 1970 Cutlass Supreme convertible which they purchased new 45 years ago. Note license plate: AAHS 70.

Pan offers perfect complement to the original classic By: Mark Haskins Columnist
To attempt to re-imagine a beloved tale can be a big mistake or a bold move. The difference lies in whether you have something original to bring to the classic story, or if you’re just trying to cash in. Pan is a bold film. Life in an orphanage isn’t easy. Life in an orphanage in London during WWII is even harder. Still, young Peter (Levi Miller) manages to make the best of it though he suspects the nuns who run the orphanage are up to something. Never in his wildest dreams did he think the nuns were selling the orphans to pirates who travel in a flying galleon. Peter, and the rest of the orphans are taken by the pirates and whisked through time and space to Neverland. It’s the adventure of a lifetime but Peter doesn’t get to enjoy it. He and the hundreds of other lost boys are forced to work in Blackbeard’s (Hugh Jackman) mines looking for pixie dust. Blackbeard has waged war on Neverland in his obsession for the magic dust which is the secret to his immortality. In that time the locals have developed a prophecy about a boy who can fly, and who will bring back the pixies to defeat Blackbeard. Peter might be that boy. With the help of Hook (Garrett Hedlund) Peter escapes Blackbeard and flees to the natives. There he
meets the fierce Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara). She and her tribe have been waiting for Peter while they fight to protect Neverland. Peter isn’t sure if he’s ready to be the chosen one. All he wants is what any orphan wants; to find his mother. Peter’s origin is largely unexplored so there’s an opportunity to create something new and original. Pan is all of that. The visual spectacle is rich and lush. This is how Neverland was always meant to look. The adventure takes a hold of your imagination, and carriers you right past the second star on the right. The real beauty is how this new story manages to dovetail perfectly into the original. With Rooney Mara reinventing the role, Tiger Lily is as captivating as she is dangerous. She is breathtaking as the warrior princess. Having Hook and Peter begin as friends is a great twist, and Garrett Hedlund plays it with a slyness and an edge that teases us with a future yet to come. Levi Miller is an incredible find. As a relative unknown he breaks out in this film as the ideal Peter and the perfect Pan. Hugh Jackman is unbelievably good as Blackbeard. Even if the rest of the film were terrible his performance alone would be reason enough to see this film. I would not be surprised to see his Blackbeard on a list of greatest movie villains. Pan is a gorgeous film, a thrilling adventure, and a perfect fit to the classic tale. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature.

Local Shrine clubs well represented at opening of new Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada By Marla Dowdall
mdowdall@metroland.com
Her eyes glistening with tears, young Anamaria Guzman still manages a broad smile as she describes her experiences at Shriners children’s hospital in Montreal. To date, her treatments for brittle bone disease have taken place at the former location on Cedar Avenue. But today, she speaks eloquently as she looks forward to the new state-of-the-art facility on Decarie Boulevard where a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony have just taken place. Her tears, she explains, may be over her physical pain, but that pain has “gotten so much better,” all thanks to Shriners and the investment – both financial and emotional – they have made in young people.
She and fellow patient Michael Andan, from Ghana, greet visitors touring the second floor of the new facility – officially known as Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada. Andan and his mother have been at the hospital since January, for treatment of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC). Like Guzman, he too wears a big smile on his face while explaining his “favourite” room is on the second floor in the Foothills and Badlands (Dinosaur Lands). Each floor has a special theme – dinosaurs just happen to be in the spotlight here, home to rehabilitation services. While the dedication and ribbon cutting took place Aug. 20, the first patient was welcomed Monday, Oct. 5. More than 2,000 people attended the
opening with many dignitaries offering praise during the ceremony. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard spoke to the crowd sprawled out across the lawns overlooking the new site. He noted “the real victory” is for the children and for the patients. Quebec’s history of friendship with the Shriners, he said, spans 90 years back to when the original facility was built in Montreal in 1925. “The true wealth of society is how you treat your children,” Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre said, adding the Shriners are doing “a fantastic job.” Also taking the stage that afternoon and speaking to what seemed to be a sea of fezzes were Gino Berretta, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada; Celine Doray, administrator; Gaétan Barette, Quebec Minister of Health and Social Services; Normand Rinfret, Director General and Chief Executive Officer, McGill University Health Centre, and others. Local support
Amidst the thousands in the crowd that day taking in the ceremony were a contingent from the Brockville and District Shrine Club and the 1000 Islands Shrine Club. A bus of more than 30 left Brockville that morning bound for the Montreal ceremonies. Secretary for the Brockville club, Gary Tristram, pointed out the new hospital also has a local touch. Tristram, who sits on the board of management for Tunis Shriners of Ottawa, also occupies the office of High Priest and Prophet. He explained a Gananoque woman donated 50 or more hockey sticks to the new facility. After attending a trip with the Brockville and District Shrine Club in 2014 to the old hospital, and a visit to the construction site of the new one, she heard of the hockey stick collection. She then followed on a desire to help and made a contribution. The sticks, at the time, were incorporated into the concepts for the new site. According to a press release from the Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada, “the first patient will be greeted in the ambulatory clinic, which has been designed to resemble a hockey rink, with a scoreboard to direct patients to their exam room and red hockey goal lights
hanging from the ceiling. The walls are adorned with over 750 donated hockey sticks and pucks.” The Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens also donated “quite a few,” Tristram said. In attendance for the momentous occasion were Shriners from across Canada and the United States – from Vancouver to Halifax, New York to Vermont. Audience members heard that the $123 million mark had just been passed for the Exceptional Care for Exceptional Kids Campaign – a campaign with a goal of $130 million – funds dedicated to the new site. Of that total $127 million is for total building and equipment costs with the remaining $3 million for the Francis Glorieux Chair in Pediatric Musculoskeletal Research. The news release notes the project has been completed both on time and on budget. André Ibghy Architects Inc. oversaw the work, along with a construction committee. The facility was built by SNC Lavalin. Ground broken in 2011 Ground was broken for the new facility in October of 2011 with construction starting in April of 2013. Continued on page 30

Local Shrine clubs well represented at opening of new Shriners Hospitals for Children - Canada afternoon as those in attendance were offered the chance to take their own self-guided tours. Ibghy noted a hospital such as this has to not only be state of the art but also an environment that is welcoming for children. The opportunity to work on this project was a unique one, but it provided him the chance to work with fantastic clients, he said. The new facility’s sixth floor features the cafeteria and administration. Fifth floor is the research centre, fourth is pre-admission, inpatient unit and child life and school services. On the third floor are day surgery and perioperative services. The second floor is home to rehabilitation, Shriners movement analysis laboratory, conference centre, Shriners pediatric simulations centre, medical records and clinical research. Housed on the ground floor are the main entrance, registration, social services, ambulatory care clinic and medical imaging. Below ground on S1 is the clinical biomedical laboratory, staff and information services and on S2 are the physiotherapy basin and technical services. A museum honouring the Shriners is also in this area and features panels of information on events,

This new building will facilitate the tremendous growth the hospital has experienced in such areas as outpatient services and research and “feature a realm of new services and technologies including 22 single-patient rooms, four surgical suites including one designed specifically for back surgery and a 200-seat education centre to enhance the teaching mandate,” the release details. The new building is three times bigger than the old hospital, which was just over 89,000 sq. ft. With eight floors of space, two of which are underground, the new structure is 207,000 sq. ft. The new building is adjacent to the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). Also on the same block of buildings is the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Montreal Chest Institute, Cancer Centre and at the other end the Research Institute of the MUHC. The former Shriners Hospitals for Children – Canada Montreal site on Cedar Avenue will be sold once the new facility is completely up and running. Andre Ibghy, of Andre Ibghy Architects, was on hand with family and firm staff, at the hospital that
