Fire hall, Gilmour Point hot topics in capital budget debate By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — South Frontenac has begun its budgeting process for 2014 in earnest and the morning line for its Capital Budget is $9,581,000 (the Operating Budget is still to come), CAO/Clerk Wayne Orr told Council at its regular committee of the whole meeting last week in Sydenham. Of that, $846,810 would come from grants, $5,223,683 from reserves and $3,510,507 from tax levy. That represents a $66,993 drop from last year’s tax levy of $3,577,500. One item that seems destined to be dropped is $1.4 million from protective services capital budget for a new fire hall in Perth Road. Coun. Al McPhail suggested that while
conceding that the current station was unacceptable as it is, simply replacing it without looking at the total number of halls and their locations was premature. “Deleting the Perth Road Fire Hall project would substantially impact the budget,” he said. Mayor Gary Davison, himself a former fire chief, agreed. “We haven’t even seen any plans yet,” Davison said. “But, we certainly could put something into it that would get us some site studies and blueprints.” “If we put $5,000 a year into preservation of fire halls, we wouldn’t be in this situation,” said Coun. Ron Vandewal. Other items in the capital budget include $7,494,000 for public works projects, including $4,480,000 for roads and bridges and $1,450,000 for public works facilities, $31,000 for servers, software
and iPads, $25,000 for a new pick-up for the building department and $165,000 for recreation projects, of which $135,000 would be earmarked for Gilmour Point in Storrington District. The additional recreation projects came in after the departmental budget deadline and generated a lot of discussion. “These didn’t come up at South Rec (the overall recreation committee for the township and each district has its own committee), and I don’t want these added to the budget this way,” said Coun. Ron Vandewal. “They came from Storrington Rec and Loughborough Rec (Wilmer playground equipment), which are committees of Council,” said Orr. “Staff doesn’t want to be put in the position of gatekeeper as to what gets presented to Council.” “My interpretation is that Storrington

Rec thought they had the go-ahead to present these numbers,” said Dep. Mayor Cam Naish. “There was a discussion about Gilmour Point at South Rec, but it was about the road in there and the Public Works Manager saying that needed to be addressed before anything else is done,” said Vandewal. “Again, we need some more direction as to how recreation projects get into the budget, but it shouldn’t be this way,” said Coun. Al McPhail. “Even if it wasn’t done the right way, I’d like to see these stay in for budget discussion, Gilmour Point is a treasure,” said Coun. John McDougall. “Put them in, not all of them will go through,” said Coun. Pat Barr. “Put them in, we’ll hack at them later,” said Davison.

South Frontenac to consider FIT 3 solar endorsement resolution By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — South Frontenac will have to pass a support resolution at its next Council meeting (Nov. 5) if farmers and other operations are to be able to take advantage of the Ontario Power Authority’s new FIT 3 solar program, former councilor and farm operator David Hahn told Council at its regular committee of the whole meeting last week in Sydenham. “Local farmers will have little chance of getting a contract awarded without this resolution,” Hahn said. “Unfortunately, time is very short and this must be passed before Nov. 7.” Hahn said the awarding of these new solar electrical generating contracts depends on a rather complicated points system, and the municipal support resolution (the wording of which is supplied by Ontario Power Authority) will add two points to each application from South Frontenac. Under the points system, community projects, aboriginal projects and municipal or public sector projects receive three points. Two points are awarded for the municipal council resolution, a project on aboriginal lands and/or a project on municipal or public sector sites. Projects with a start/stop ability to meet demand will be awarded one point. “So, if you’re an individual, you can only get two points,” said Coun. Al McPhail. Hahn was there representing the Wintergreen Renewable Energy Co-op, which wants to take advantage of the new opportunity.
He said the co-op’s mission is to develop renewable energy projects and promote renewable energy and community power. “You had me until you promoted your own company,” joked Coun. Ron Vandewal. Hahn said the FIT 3 projects are different from the old Micro FIT projects, which had a limit of 10 kW and were not subject to a competitive approval process. “These FIT 3 projects are from 10kW to 500 kW and there is a competitive approval process,” he said. “These are small to medium installations. “A 500kW installation is about five acres.” Under this new program, the investor builds a solar PV system and sells the electricity directly to the Ontario Power Authority, Hahn said. The contracts are for 20 years at stable prices, which are set to provide a 10- to 12per cent return on investment. Project owners supply all the capital. “This could provide a good retirement income for investors,” Hahn said. “And, it will provide work for local businesses installing and operating local projects.” He said there was no need to worry that solar panel fields would be popping up where cornfields used to be because “you can’t install them on Class 1, 2, or 3 farmland, only below Class 3.” Dep. Mayor Cam Naish was concerned about who would be responsible for “tearing down” the installations after 20 years. “That depends on the contract but personally, I’d want the panels after 20 years because they’ll still produce,” said Hahn.
Kickin’ off Seniors’ Night EMC Events – Eleven-year-old Jessica Wedden started off the 37th annual Sharbot Lake & District Seniors’ Night at Land O’Lakes Public School last week in Mountain Grove. The night also featured performances by the Old Habits Band and the Lions Club Players. Photo/Craig Bakay

Alton Road renaming subject to procedural error but still going ahead By Craig Bakay Reporter
Gazette News — Due to a “procedural error” in the original 911 civic addressing along Alton Road, Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough was at South Frontenac Council’s regular committee of the whole meeting last week in Sydenham requesting approval for his solution. “It is recommended that Council waive the public notice requirements for changing a road name and that Council approve the name change of Alton Road to Alton Road East and Alton Road West, to prevent confusion for responding emergency services,” Chesebrough said. He said that during the process of “fixing outstanding issues with civic addressing throughout the Township,” Alton Road was identified as having a problem with the civic numbers not being consistent with the odd and even numbers east and west of
Loughborough-Portland Boundary Road. “I don’t know how Portland could’ve got that wrong in the first place,” joked Mayor Gary Davison. Chesebrough said letters were sent out to all 93 residents on Alton Road advising them of the change and only one resident contacted the Township to disagree with the change. “Unfortunately, the letters were sent out without Council’s endorsement or meeting the public notice requirements as spelled out in the Township’s Bylaw,” Chesebrough said. “Upon discovering the procedural problem, the name change was put on hold pending Council’s approval.” “Are there going to be more of these?” asked Coun. Ron Vandewal. “Probably,” said Chesebrough. “But at this point, I think we’re probably safer to address them as they pop up.” “I have no problem with this one but how do we determine east and west on the next one?” said Coun. Al McPhail.
“If it doesn’t work, we can just go with North and South,” quipped Coun. Ron Vandewal. ••• Emergency responses are down to an average of 36/month in 2013 (through Sept. 30), as opposed to 38/month in 2012 and 37/month in 2011, Fire Chief Rick Chesebrough said in his monthly report presented to South Frontenac Council at its regular committee of the whole meeting last week in Sydenham. There have been 35 fires to date in 2013, as opposed to 86 in 2012 and 45 in 2011. Medical calls remain the largest numbers fire departments are called to but to date there have only been 106 in 2013 as opposed to 131 in 2012 and 137 in 2011. False alarms also seem to be down, with 45 so far in 2013 as opposed to 57 in 2012 and 60 in 2011. There have been no calls for water rescue this year after there being four calls in each of 2012 and 2011.

Local poet honoured by readers’ choice award Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Gazette News – On the evening of Oct. 29, Sydenham poet Brent Raycroft received exciting news. He had won a poetry award - not just any poetry award. Raycroft won the Readers’ Choice Award in the Walrus Poetry Prize contest. “I sort of took a long shot on the Walrus competition,” explained Raycroft. “It is a little bit like gambling. I was skeptical about the online voting. I thought whoever was the savviest would generate the most votes. So I figured that someone younger and more tech savvy would win, but then I won. I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, I always thought that I could win it. I read all of the other poems and I thought I definitely had a fair chance.” Raycroft has been writing poetry for years. He had a few poems published when he was in university in the ‘80s, but then writing poetry kind of fell by the wayside for him. “There was a long period where I didn’t try to publish or didn’t even try to finish poems. It was more doodling than anything. When I moved out here, to Sydenham, I had more time. All of my commuting time was gone and there was more time to focus on finishing my poems. I was able to polish things up and focus on more than just writing things down in a journal.” In 2010, in an effort to break a bit of writer’s block, Raycroft took on a poetry challenge, of sorts. He challenged himself to write a poem a day. By the end of the year he had succeeded, and he turned his year’s worth of work into a collection of Haikus called A Year on Earth. “I, of course, chose the shortest form,” said Raycroft. “I figured it gave me the best shot at succeeding and I did. It was a great way to get me back into it.” After that year of writing, Raycroft started attending open mic nights in Kingston for poets that want to share their work and voice.
This ad space was generously donated by: This ad space was generously donated by:
They meet on the first Tuesday of each month and Raycroft started attending regularly. “It is a really great opportunity to read what you have. You’d think, in a small town like Kingston, there wouldn’t be that many people with poetry to read, but there are a surprising number of people that come out. It is a very accepting kind of place.” Raycroft also recently organized a night of poetry at the Mill Street Cafe in Sydenham, and would love to see more of a poetry presence in the area. “We’ll see how successful this event is and then maybe go from there. I’d like to make it something that happens annually. It would be nice to invite people from out of town to come and read. It would be fun to generate some more poetry interest in the area.” The Walrus win certainly puts Sydenham on the map a bit more in terms of poetry, and while Raycroft doesn’t plan on entering again next year, he does plan on submitting his work to other journals. Mansion had humble beginnings Heritage Lifestyle - It’s hard to imagine that a little pink pill led to the creation of such a beautiful setting as Fulford House in Brockville. It’s a stunning piece of architecture. George Fulford of Brockville created the G. T. Fulford & Company. The aim? To produce and distribute patent medicine. Pink Pills for Pale People (I’m not making this up) created a fortune for the company’s founder. Born in Brockville in 1852, Fulford attended business school in Belleville. In 1874, he returned to Brockville and worked with his brother William, a druggist. In the drug store, George Fulford, a savvy business man, saw the high profitability of patent medicines. It was a time when the human body still wasn’t understood and patent medicines offered hope to
the suffering in the days before vaccinations and antibiotics. Patent drugs were sometimes referred to as nostrums: they had not been tested for scientific efficacy and the ingredients were a secret. Patent medicines were available over-the-counter and did not require a physician’s prescription. In 1890, George T. Fulford paid Dr. William Jackson $53.01 for the formula and rights to the Pink Pills for Pale People. You can see samples of the pink pills’ packaging at the Brockville Museum. The company’s marketing branch, using the trade name of The Dr. Williams Medical Company, which had no actual relation to the doctor who created the pills, expanded its distribution throughout North America, Europe and every corner HugE SavingS on all rEmaining of the British Empire. impoverished blood, malnutrition disorders and whenever a tonic for digestion or nerves is required. They were guaranteed to contain no opiates or narcotics. Anemia was common in the era, so the pills could have helped some people feel better if they suffered from an iron deficiency. Fulford realized that masscirculation newspapers could be used for marketing. He was one of the first to use the advertorial approach. The advertisements resembled news stories, each reporting a miraculous recovery from physical ailments. The stories always ended with the revelation that the cure occurred after taking Pink Pills for Pale People. As Fulford’s wealth and social standing grew, he served on the Brockville Town Council and Finance Commission for multiple terms. A member of the Liberal Party, in 1900 he was rewarded for his support of Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier with an appointment to the Senate of Canada. Under Fulford’s direction, Fulford Place, a 20,000-squarefoot Edwardian mansion, was built in Brockville between 1899 and
1901. The home was designed by architect A. W. Fuller of Albany. The grounds were designed by Frederick Olmsted, who also designed New York City’s Central Park. The mansion was ideal for entertaining the many friends and associates of the family. There’s a grand hall, a dining room that seats fifty guests, a huge verandah, a rococo-style drawing room and a Moorish smoking room and billiard room. George Fulford also bought a large steam-powered yacht, christened The Magedoma, named using the first letters of family members’ names. The boat was used for Canadian Navy training in the Second World War. The family undertook many philanthropic activities and gave generously to organizations like Brockville General Hospital and the YMCA. Unfortunately, in 1905, Senator Fulford became the first Canadian to die in an automobile accident. Due to high maintenance costs of the house and property, Fulford’s son, George Fulford II had to sell off part of the land to afford the Continued on page 10

Islanders dislike Dangerous Sydenham Water Works Goods Act changes! Can you faces funding shortfall blame them? Reporter
Gazette news- Visitors will always come to Wolfe Island whether it be to travel to the US or to Big Sandy Bay, the Shanti Retreat, to golf at the Riverfront course, to cycle, look at wind towers or visit the Corn Maze. And they will come to enjoy all that Marysville has to offer in the way of art, history, events, entertainment, food and a 1st class skating rink. They will continue to come to the island simply for the ride on the ferry… At the same time workers, goods and service providers in every area essential to the sustainability of Wolfe Island and its residents .. will also come. And the ferry service is excellent but already lacks capacity for the number of islanders who rely on city services for work, education, health and entertainment to survive and regularly travel off the island. So the loss of the 2:30 pm ferry trip to Kingston Tuesday’s and Friday’s announced last week, is causing much grief to island residents who would normally take THAT ferry to go to work , keep appointments…. who can no longer do so if there is a truck (full or empty) defined as carrying dangerous goods returning to Kingston. (The 6:15 am ferry from Kingston to the island carries dangerous goods and drivers Only those days.). This new regulation from Transport Canada while legitimate, strikes islanders as rather surprising since cars, pedestrians, oil and gas trucks empty and full, have been travelling together for years..

Gazette News — “As councilors, you hold a lot of responsibility and legal liabilities,” Kevin Riley, director of water/wastewater operations for Utilities Kingston told South Frontenac Council at its regular committee of the whole meeting last week in Sydenham. Riley was briefing Council on its responsibilities concerning the Sydenham Water Treatment Plant, which is owned by the Township but operated by Utilities Kingston. “The Safe Drinking Water Act (in the wake of the Walkerton water treatment failure) changed life considerably,” he said. “It’s changed the way we operated, and our financial plans. “Councilors need to know that it’s there, how many customers they have and ask questions — like why we do what we do.” Riley said the Walkerton episode was a result of “complacency on all fronts” including the Province, health units, municipalities, operators and customers. But following Walkerton, a Statutory Standard of Care was established, which applies to councilors and directors of municipal service boards, officers of municipalities such as CAOs and clerks and other municipal officials and senior staff with direct water supply responsibilities. He said that under the Safe Drinking Water Act, municipalities have to be licensed to own a water system, must develop with the operating authority an operational plan that is approved by the province and must demonstrate adequate funding. Elder Abuse Prevention Support Line While the operational parts of the Toll-Free Sydenham system are essentially handled by Utilities Kingston, the funding part is the Township’s responsibility, and in that respect there are a few concerns. Completely Confidential In a report to Council, Treasurer Louise Fragnito said that from the original construction of the Sydenham Water Works, an unfunded growth related cost of $486,614 remains unfinanced as of September 2013. “It was intended that this amount would be financed as new connections to the water system were created,” she said. “Of the remaining $486,614 unfunded, it is

To loose two, 55 car trips from Wolfe Island weekly, is a big deal for a ferry service that presently doesn’t meet the needs of the community not just at peak periods, but more and more , all the time. The island is not self sufficient thus residents have to “go to town.” Increasingly they park and walk or cycle on to the ferry, some may even car pool. But that is not enough to ease the capacity problem. The question is what to do now ? Is there a way of fitting in an extra ferry run during the day….. ? Could there be an extra ferry on hand? From Glenora perhaps? Maybe a pedestrian only ferry? Can you imagine the wait at the winter dock…? Watching the boarding process last Tuesday and Friday… for the 2:30 ferry from Wolfe Island, I couldn’t help wondering, “What happens if there is an ambulance call? Who has priority then?” The answer always is the ambulance has priority. Can you imagine the length of the ferry line up for the 4:30 ferry if that should happen.? Will it be past the Land Fill Centre ? At the door of the Metal Craft ? Wherever it is, there will be at least a 2-3 hour wait. Without an ambulance call the 3:30 left many cars behind. Thank goodness for our own (MTO’s) Lori Minton. She sure has a way of handling unhappy islanders and anyone else for that matter... At this point it seems the only option is to get used to this new wrinkle in ferry service…… Grin & Bear It ????? What else can we do?

anticipated that $74,000 will come from an existing subdivision currently under way. “The remaining value would equate to the development of about 60 new lots in the Sydenham water service area.” “We were told we overbuilt it by those who were opposed to it in the first place,” said Mayor Gary Davison. “We do have 21 lots in the new subdivision but any more and somebody will have to move the boundary lines (of the hamlet of Sydenham) because it’s full. “If we start funding the water through tax dollars, what will happen when Harrowsmith or Battersea needs municipal water?” Fragnito said options to financing the remaining liability include general taxation, working funds, water plant reserves (balance of $329,066 as of Dec. 31, 2012), billing the users and/or a combination of options. Fragnito recommended that, effective Jan. 1, 2014, Council apply the current balance of the Investing in Ontario reserve (about $300,950) and any balance necessary from working funds (about $187,386) “to fully fund the water plant upgrade facility.”

Heritage Editorial - Do they even have house leagues for kids over the age of, say, six anymore? I ask because based on the people I know, it seems like “rep”-style teams are the only option once you get passed the introductory levels of a sport. It’s like no one is allowed to be mediocre at sports anymore. I know many kids who play rep hockey, for which there are various levels, each involving a different number of “A”s….A, AA, AAA, AAAA, etc. I can’t remember if more “A”s correspond with a higher skill level or vice versa, but from a parent’s point of view it doesn’t really matter. Any way you look at it, the prospect of enjoying life is out the window at least a few years as you drive your kid to Oshawa, Kanata, Cornwall, Brockville, Trenton and god knows where else for games 40 out of 52 weekends per year. And it’s not only hockey. For things like basketball and ringette, everything is U-17, U-18, U-20, etc. I believe these categories correspond to the age of the youth involved. The terminology may be different than it is
for hockey, but the idea is the same. The life of everyone in the family must revolve around the child’s sporting schedule. Thanksgiving dinner? Whatever. Grandmother’s 80th birthday party? Meh. There’s a game that weekend in Mississauga. Heck, even dance seems to fill up entire lives these days. And from what I’m told it’s just as if not more expensive than hockey when you factor in all the uniforms and travelling expenses. I realize I could be offending half my readers by writing this. Believe me, that is not my intention. I do not mean to imply that what your child does isn’t worth it or that you are a fool for making it a major priority in your life. It’s also possible that I just happen know a disproportionately large percentage of uncommonly gifted athletes. If it makes you feel any better, I’m probably just bitter that I was always such an awkward, geeky teen who was never talented at any sport. (I ran away from volleyballs. Literally.) I’m also a little nervous for what my own future holds. I fear that 10 years down the road, all of my weekends will be spent shivering in cold hockey arenas located in unglamorous suburbs far from home. While athletics and I never really saw eye-to-eye, Steve, the vast majority of my cousins and my dad all excelled at sports. Whether I like it or not, it’s in Summer’s blood. Then again, she’s also half me. It
could go either way. Growing up, I always participated in sports. I played soccer in the summer and the teams were organized by school. I went to Winston, so I got to be on the “Winston Bulldogs” with all my schoolmates. No one took it too seriously and everyone had fun. I wasn’t the worst person on the team, but I was far from being the best and it didn’t bother me one iota. I’m not sure if my parents realized early on that I was never going to be an athlete, which influenced them not to focus on sports, or if they made a conscious decision to encourage me to develop my skills at more practical things. Knowing them, it was probably the latter. How many people (especially women) can make even a modest living playing sports? My parents are practical accountants. They could do the math, and let’s just say I probably wouldn’t have been missing any classes, even if a run-down arena in Ajax was calling my name. I will probably be similar with Summer, and while I am a little fearful that our culture of seemingly ubiquitous elite athletes will put pressure on both of us, I will do my best to stand my ground. I’m guessing it will be apparent pretty early on if Summer is going to be the next Serena Williams. Failing that, it will be books (and family) before balls in the PrattCampbell household.
with cancer, doesn’t it? Fran (Zetes) Dagostino is one of the best guitarist I’ve ever heard, and that includes all the big boys like Clapton, Hendrix and Allman. We’ve played together on several tunes and I’ve covered one song he wrote many, many times, including making a recording of it (that may see the light of day if I ever get around to making another CD). He particularly excels at blues guitar although his version of Stevie Wonder’s Superstition is the best ever. But here’s the kicker. I’ve never met the man . . . at least not face to face. We’ve talked on various chat lines, met up in Second Life and he announced his cancer condition on Facebook. But I first met Zetes on a music website called MacJams. I’d been a ‘veteran’ of these sites for awhile and Fran was a raw rookie, who had yet to post any tunes due to the site’s policy of allowing original material only — no covers. Zetes (whose handle was ‘Ziti,’ some kind of pasta) was on the chat line there asking if anybody had some blues tracks he could jam along to. Well, of course I had lots of them
and offered to send him something and we could ‘collab’ (slang for collaboration, ain’t we music types clever ones?). I was expecting some wild solo guitar and perhaps a few bits of rhythm. What I got back was a polite “I changed a few things” and some of the most incredible stuff I’d ever heard. If you want to, you can hear it here: http://www.macjams.com/ song/11299. Anyways, that began an eightyear online friendship that exists to this day. I’ve yet to respond to his Facebook reports other than to hit the “Like” button because frankly, I haven’t known what to say. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been affected by his illness, even though we’ve yet to plug in on the same real-life stage. Anyways, hang in there Zetes, people are pulling for you and at the very least, enjoy your Bosox victory. And oh yeah, keep on crankin’ out them blues brother. By the way, this one-time amnesty towards Bosox fans only applies to Zetes. For the rest of online music friends (Ed, Adam, Jim) . . . you guys still suck.

Heritage Column — Well, the 2013 baseball season is over and normally the sight of the Boston Red Sox dancing around in World Series celebration would have me ready to hurl. The Bosox come in at No. 3 among my most-hated opponent teams after the Lost Angeles Dodgers and the Dallas Cowboys. (C’mon now, everybody has teams they love to hate, just ask any Habs fan what he/she thinks of the Leafs.) Anyways, this year I’m OK with a team I love to hate winning it all. You see, a friend of mine lives in the Boston area and is a huge fan of the Bosox. And unfortunately, he has just begun chemotherapy for cancer. While the prognosis isn’t great, there is hope and my buddy seems to be approaching it with a positive attitude. (They say that’s a good approach with these things.) So, the Bosox winning puts him in a good mood and that has to help in his fight

A time to remember Heritage Editorial - As poppies start to appear on lapels and sweaters of Kingstonians throughout the city, we are reminded of the upcoming ceremonies and moments of silence that signify Remembrance Day each year. Remembrance Day dates back to 1919 in Canada and it originated as a day to commemorate the end of the First World War on Monday, Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. Did you know that from 1923 to 1931, Armistice Day, which is now Remembrance Day, was held on the same day as Canadian Thanksgiving? Both events were held on the Monday of the week of Nov. 11 until MP Allan Neill introduced a bill to hold Armistice Day on a fixed day. During the passing of this bill, it was also decided that the word ‘remembrance’ would be used for the day. Thanksgiving was then moved to its still celebrated October date. The poppy also has a long history, but is most often associated with Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae and his famous poem In Flanders Fields. Poppies became the symbol of remembrance in 1921. In case you weren’t aware, there is also proper poppy wearing etiquette. Poppies are to be worn on the left side, as close to your heart as possible, and should only be worn during the poppy campaign which starts on the last Friday of October and goes until and includes Nov. 11. Today, Remembrance Day gatherings and events are held across the country to remember all of those lost at war. In Kingston, these events are always well received and well attended. If you are looking for a Remembrance Day gathering to attend, here are a few that are happening throughout the area: - Downtown Kingston: Wreaths will be laid at the Cross of Sacrifice ahead of the civic ceremony by community groups (starting at 9:30 a.m.) and veteran and military groups (starting at 10:15 a.m.) The service, held in French and English, is set to start at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 11, at the Cross of Sacrifice at King and Barrie Streets and will conclude at 11:20 a.m. - Sydenham: Events to be held at the Sydenham Cenotaph on Wheatley Road - Wilton: Events to be held at the Wilton Cenotaph in Wilton. - RMC: Events to be held at the Memorial Arch on the RMC campus adjacent to Hwy. 2. - Events will also be held at various schools throughout the region, with the majority occurring at 11 a.m.

ongoing upkeep. The lot was reduced from 10 acres to three. The prime land fetched a good price, enabling the family to stay in their home. George Fulford II also became a politician, serving as a member of the House of Commons. In 1987, the Fulford family donated Fulford Place to the Ontario Heritage Fund. Later the family donated the contents of the mansion. In 1992, the site was designated a National Historic Site of Canada. After an extensive restoration, the house was opened to the public as a museum in 1993. Thanks to early photographs taken inside the house, it was possible to accurately interpret it in its Edwardian era. Inside you’ll see tapestries, paintings, statuary and ceramics that the Fulford family collected during world travels. These original artifacts are displayed in period rooms. The setting you will explore looks very much like it looked more than a century ago. The Beaux Arts home served as the hosting site for Canadian prime ministers and British princes. It was an era when opulent homes, serving as cottages for the rich, lined the St. Lawrence River. Guests to Fulford Place included Prince Edward (the future Edward VIII), British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and Canadian Prime Ministers Wilfrid Laurier and William Lyon Mackenzie King. This year’s Scene of the Crime Writers Festival inspired by Grant Allen, the patron author of the festival and acknowledged as Canada’s first crime writer was the last . The first was held in Sept. 2002) . Time constraints, fewer volunteers work over loads led to this decision. Members instead will fulfill commitments to out reach programs they established over the years. Most recently the board held a re-dedication event of the newly restored (on their behalf) of the Longueuil Family monument located in the island’s Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery. Grant Allen, whose father Joseph Allen was the first Minister of of Trinity Anglican was the grandson of the last Baroness de Longueuil. The Baroness and many of his relatives are buried in the cemetery. Trinity Anglican Church itself as well as the land it rests on was a gift from the Baroness de Longueuil. “The Scene of the Crime Festival has always enjoyed a close relationship with the Wolfe Island community as a whole, and the Trinity Anglican Church in particular,” board president and well known writer Violette Mallan said prior to the rededication event. “As part of our effort to give back to the community which has always been so supportive of us, we commissioned the restoration of the Longueuil monument.” The well attended event brought out clergy history buffs interested residents, and visitors to the island.. Mayor Doyle and Rev. Canon Chris Carr welcomed all..including restorer Gary Foster Campbell Monument Co. Mayor Doyle and Councillor Grant were in attendance as were many members past and present. The monument built in the 1800’s of local stone,
considered unusual for the time when normally the stone would have come from Europe. Many in attendance took time to visit the Crypt restored a few years ago, before joining guests at a reception held at St. Margaret’s Hall, The idea for the Wolfe Island Crime Writer’s festival originated with Island natives Therese Greenwood and Maureen Lollar along with crime writer Violette Mallin. Therese felt the island was the perfect place for a crime festival and was even more convinced when the connection was made between Grant Allen and the island’s Longueuil family.. A further distinction for Grant Allen was his friendship with Arthur Conan Doyle. The guest writers that first year 2002 included Canadian mystery writers Peter Sellers and Mary Jane Maffini, and local writers the late Renee Marshal and of course Captain Brian Johnson. Ken Keyes , Rev. Canon Chris Carr of Trinity Anglican, Denis Mosier, Betty Doyle and many other islanders from the festival’s beginning were enthusiastic volunteers along with many more over the 13 years.. The Grant Allen Award honouring Canada’s crime-writing pioneers was established in the 3rd year. Well received in the community, the festival became an important Canadian crime writing event bringing an impressive list of Canada’s top mystery writers to the island It will be missed. Enchanting and fascinating people….and their world
Loved for his rawness, despite the flaws Heritage Lifestyle - He called himself a drinker with a writing problem. It’s as accurate a description as any. Brendan Behan, the Irish playwright, author and poet, was a confusing blend of alcohol-inspired boisterous facades covering what was essentially a vulnerable and shy man. Behan played the role of drunken Irishman well. If only the writing hadn’t gotten in the way. Today the public watches with fascination as the likes of talented entertainers like Britney Spears and the late Amy Winehouse spin out of control. That morbid interest hasn’t changed much from earlier days in the entertainment business. The fortunate recover. Brendan Behan didn’t. He became of victim of the facade of fame. Behan grew up in a staunch Irish republican home. His father spent time in prison near the end of Irish Civil War in the 1920s. Irish songs, history, literature and culture filled
his life. Brendan Behan was not formed for a cookie-cutter role. “A job is death without dignity,” said Behan. He was destined for greatness. At the age of 14, as Behan apprenticed to the career of house painter, he was already a member of Fianna Eireann, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) youth wing. In 1939, the IRA launched a bombing campaign in England. Young Brendan, who was trained in explosives, sailed to Liverpool but was arrested the day he landed. As he was under the age of 17, he was not given a lengthy adult sentence. He received three years detention in a borstal (UK reformatory). There, aside from an early beating he took from guards, Behan was treated well. That first beating occurred after the chaplain asked Brendan when he was going to give up his involvement in the IRA, reminding him that he was automatically excommunicated until he gave up the sin of membership in the organization.
According to Behan biographer Michael O’Sullivan, Behan had an outburst and “embarked on a fullscale lecture on how the clergy had consistently proven themselves to be against the cause of Irish freedom and in sympathy with the British Empire. He began at the Synod of Drumceatt in 1172....” Still, Behan’s views toward England did turn around. Governor Cyril Alfred Joyce of the Prison Commission had a profound impact on Behan. O’Sullivan noted that the positive change of heart Behan had toward the English people lasted for the rest of his life. When accused of liking the English, Behan noted that it was “the imperialist system and not the English that persecuted the Irish.” Behan associated Governor Joyce’s sense of fair play with English people generally. He became almost apolitical. Near the end of his life, he wrote: “I would like to make it clear that I am not interested in politics, which are
neither Fascism, Communism nor rheumatism.” One of his plays, The Quare Fellow, dealt with a condemned man awaiting imminent execution. It’s about survival in an inhumane environment. Because of its coarse language, the production was banned in Ireland. It was well received in places like Theatre Royal in Stratford and East London. Not that Behan outwardly cared. He wrote: “Critics are like eunuchs in a harem; they know how it’s done, they’ve seen it done every day, but they’re unable to do it themselves.” I’ve always held to that theory. Written in Irish, his next play, An Giall (The Hostage), became an international success when translated into English. The Hostage opened on Broadway in 1960. Admirers like Lauren Bacall and Jackie Gleason gave Behan a standing ovation in Sardi’s restaurant following the opening night show. During one performance of The
Hostage, thankfully not opening night, he entered the theatre drunk. Stage hands were unable to subdue him and he walked on stage and did a jig in the middle of his own play. If you know The Hostage, you’ll realize that Behan’s appearance could well have appeared as part of the production. The play is wild and chaotic with ongoing banter that changed regularly, depending on current events in the world. Behan, in a single-handed gesture (his play, The Hostage), helped change New York’s theater scene in the bohemian 1960s. The Hostage is considered a significant text in the early Absurdist movement. It’s written in a nonrealist, humorous style, with characters frequently bursting into song and dance and involving a breakdown of the “fourth wall” between actors and audience. Let’s say it’s not exactly My Fair Lady or West Side Story. Continued from page 12

Behan adopted New York and the city made him its son. Behan said New York was the only place he ever fit in. Diverse, gritty and joyous, the city was a place where Behan could, and did, mix with anyone, regardless of race, creed, social standing or sexual orientation. “I am not afraid to admit that New York is the greatest city on the face of God’s earth,” he wrote. Sadly, Behan followed the path of writers like Dylan Thomas, who drank himself to death. Like Dylan Thomas, Behan lived for a while at the Hotel Chelsea in New York, after being barred from the upscale Algonquin Hotel for his rambunctious and unsavory behavior. His alcohol-fueled diabetic condition deteriorated to the point that his numb fingers and hands could not type and he had to use a tape recorder to dictate his thoughts. He lapsed into diabetic comas and suffered seizures on several occasions. A play called Brendan at the Chelsea had its North American premier in New York’s Acorn Theater this year. It followed Behan through 24 hours at the Hotel Chelsea. The production, written by Behan’s niece, Janet Behan, includes a number of flashbacks to events during Brendan’s American visits. The play received rave reviews on the street and in the media. In Brendan at the Chelsea, the audience enters Behan’s mind, his soul even. We feel the struggle of the artist. We love him despite his many flaws. Brendan at the Chelsea opens with a hung over Behan facing the day. His publisher awaits material for the next book. His wife, Beatrice, is in transit on the QEII somewhere in the Atlantic. His lover repeatedly calls

him, searching for the words “I love you,” which Behan never utters. His feisty assistant, Lianne, tries to keep him in line. Behan turns on a tape recorder and starts dictating what will become Brendan Behan’s New York, one of his final works. Ravaged by critics, I rather enjoyed Brendan Behan’s New York. Granted, it’s not Brendan Behan as a member of the literati. It’s Behan as he might be chatting in a pub. Behan did not enamor everyone. Some, especially his own country folk, despised him for bringing a bad light on Ireland. But Behan needed no approval from those who detested his lifestyle. His was not the life of the suburbs and suits, the facades, which he hated. In Brendan’s most downtrodden, pathetic physical state, Beatrice loved him. Despite, or because of, her painful awareness, she chose to remain steadfast in her marriage. Her integrity and loyalty were a foil to Brendan’s alcoholism and his sexuality, which, in its non-definition, was all over the map. He was almost a caricature of stereotypical maleness. Well, aside from his forays into gay moments. What makes Behan so disgustingly lovable is his honesty with words. He never poured layers of syrup over the human condition. The end came far too early for this brilliant Irish author Brendan Behan, left, with Jackie Gleason. “I’m a drinker with a writing writer. Brendan Behan died at the age of 41 problem,” said Behan. In 1964, the brilliant writer died at the age of 41 from alcoholon March 20, 1964. Behan received an IRA fuelled diabetes. honor guard in Ireland’s biggest funeral since that of Michael Collins in 1922. We are left to wonder what brilliant literature never came to fruition. As for the lad himself, Brendan noted, “There’s no bad publicity except an obituary.” On those terms, he only had one bad review in his life.

Pre-movie trailer best part of this film experience Mark Haskins
My Take
mmarciniak@theheritageemc.ca
Arts – Before The Counselor there was a really good trailer for The Monuments Men. I mention this because the trailer for The Monuments Men was the best part of The Counselor. I’ve seen a lot of films that start in the middle of the story. It’s a good technique for grabbing an audience’s attention, and drawing them into the film. Of course at some point an effort is made to explain what’s going on, and who the characters are. That never happens in The Counselor. In this incoherent mess I managed to piece together a few things. The Counselor (Michael Fassbender), whose real name we never learn, is a lawyer who decides to do a one-time drug deal. He’s working with Reiner (Javier Bardem) a shady night club owner, and Westray (Brad Pitt) the
middle man who set things up between the Counselor and the Mexican Cartel. The Counselor’s fiancée, Lara (Penelope Cruz), has a role to play, though it’s never clear if she has any idea what’s going on. There’s also Malkina (Cameron Diaz) who is Reiner’s sociopathic girlfriend, and who definitely knows what’s going on. Other than greed I couldn’t tell you why the Counselor would want to do business with a Mexican drug cartel, but needless to say things go wrong and horrible things happen to everyone involved except the sociopath. The Counselor is working hard to be a slick and sexy film about flawed people making big mistakes. It’s trying to walk that line between art and entertainment to create a stylistic film that comments on greed, death, and the choices people make, but in the end it doesn’t work. It’s a film that’s trying too hard, and it’s obvious that it’s trying too hard. It has all the subtlety of a wellaimed brick, and about as much depth as a shallow puddle.
The whole film is a series of intense conversations, with interesting dialogue that is all completely meaningless. There is a lot of drivel about the nature of reality and how Diaz’s character is like a cheetah. There’s also something about the nature and beauty of killers, but it all soundes like a weak justification for what is a essentially an awful horror film. I’m always a little surprised when good actors make bad films, but I suppose it serves as a reminder that these people we tend to put on pedestals are only human, and capable of making mistakes. I wasn’t particularly impressed by anyone’s performance. I thought Fassbender was flat and he and Cruz were awkward together. Bardem was more like a cartoon character than a real person, and I have no idea what Pitt was doing. Diaz does play a rather convincing sociopath, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing. I’m looking forward to seeing The Monuments Men, but I didn’t need to pay $12 to see the trailer. Mark Haskins’ column is a regular feature of the EMC.

Gazette Lifestyle - What could be better than a pub-crawl for adults? Dishcrawl, a new foodie social activity, has arrived in Kingston. Beginning in restaurants and bistros in much larger cities such as San Francisco, San Diego and a few years ago in Ottawa and Toronto, Dishcrawl and its ambassadors are now in over 125 North American cities. The role of the ambassador is to act asa local foodie expert. They coordinate the events and encourage local restaurants to get involved. Purchase a ticket to join in on the walking tour of select participating restaurants. Guests are guided through a variety of locations, tasting and sampling food from that business. The meal portions are substantial in most instances and all tastings are included in the price of the ticket. The average ticket price is $60-$75 (inclusive of tax and tip). Drinks are excluded. Meet new people who enjoy food or gather a few friends to join in on the experience. Kingston Dishcrawl ambassador, Christine McCullough is excited to bring this creative foodie crawl to our community. Christine is a local event organizer. She studied culinary management and event planning and is thrilled to have found this role, which combines both her passions. The events launched in September with 27 keen crawlers dining on local fare with visits to Tir Nan Og, St. Johns Public House, Chez Piggy and a final sweet stop at Sipps. A new event is held the third week of every month. “We’ve had huge support from Downtown Kingston, Tourism Kingston and the local restaurants,” said Christine. “This city has

Remembrance Day held in high regard for Mary and family would topple over. If the overcome person was a girl, the teacher would rush up, fan her with the sheet music, and if that didn’t help, she would be carried off with her eyes rolled into the back of her head. But if it was a boy pupil who had succumbed to the pressures of the day and toppled over, he was left to lie there until he either revived on his own, or the ceremony ended. Emerson said, on the way home, “those Renfrew kids are a sickly lot...certainly none of us ever fell over in a dead faint.”

Gazette Lifestyle - Mother was always concerned that we five children didn’t have the proper respect for the true meaning of Remembrance Day. After all the war songs had been sung, out of the The school at Northcote with only 18 pupils, had crowd would come a very old man with a shiny no piano, and the few county officials were already trumpet tucked under his arm. He would walk the involved with the ceremony in the town of Renfrew, full length of the parade area, and he wore a soldier’s and so there was little in the way of observance at uniform that obviously had been borrowed. He into the Model T and headed into town, where, as she was very elderly, and Mother, ever the one to add put it, there would be a proper and fitting ceremony drama to any situation, said he probably fought in to remember those who had fallen in the First World the Boer War. He played the trumpet loud and clear War. as a bell, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd! Mother’s three young brothers had all been in The Renfrew children were the first to march off the army, even though Mother said they weren’t old the parade grounds, and Emerson, not to be outdone enough to vote, but they were old enough to fight in by kids from town, turned on the heal of his gumthe war. By the way Mother talked about her brothrubbers, and with his arms swinging, marched back ers, I wondered if they perhaps had won the war down the street to where Mother had parked the singlehandedly! We would drive through freezjected once again to Mother’s stories of how her ing rain or snow, it seemed, and at a very young age, I own brothers went off to war, and often her voice wondered if the terrible weather had something myswould catch with the memory. But we knew she terious to do with the sombreness of the day. And so was filled with pride, and I too would be caught up when we headed into Renfrew, we were bundled up in the stories, and would think of those uncles, who like mummies, with hats and mitts, and winter boots. returned safely from battle, and unscarred...and I We certainly wouldn’t have the luxury of wearing would think I was related to true war heroes. But it never mattered how much clothes we had on, there was always a piercing See our flyer in today’S paper* wind rolling down Raglan Street where the parade took place at the war memorial, and it penetrated our bodies and had us shivering like leaves on tree. The children from the Renfrew schools always marched to the place where the ceremony was to be held. We five country children were very aware that we weren’t really a part of a group, but that certainly didn’t matter to our mother. She would wait until the town school pupils had formed perfect lines, neither looking left or right, and then she would march the five of us right up to the front row, and position us so that we were actually an extension of the line-up of town kids. My older sister Audrey was most embarrassed, but her protests did nothing to sway our Mother. The town children had sheets of music, and we would shudder in embarrassment when we would see Mother walk right over to a teacher, whisper in her ear, and then point to us, and then we would see her head back to us with five sheets of music! For reasons much beyond my comprehension, someone from the town ranks of pupils always fainted. Just as sure as death and taxes, as soon as the person leading the program opened his mouth, one or two

1965 Ford Falcon with 13,000 original miles Gazette Lifestyle – Ever notice how some stories just seem to jump right off the page? Such is the story that arrived recently from John Ziler, who lives near Ailsa Craig, a small town within easy driving distance of Sarnia,. Ontario:
“I bought my 1965 Falcon three years ago. I had tried one out in 1965 but just having my first job, I couldn’t afford the monthly payments so had to settle for a Volkswagen. And now, 44 years later, I purchased this one. It has no options except an automatic and
came with a 170 cubic inch six cylinder motor. When I bought it, it had just over 10,000 miles. It now has 13,000 miles on it. “It was bought new in 1965 from Eastway Ford in Hamilton and still has the original dealer sticker, owner’s manual, and sales brochure. The man who bought it new in March 1965 worked for Ford in Oakville and helped build the car. He died in December of that year and his wife put it in the garage where it stayed for 40 years. The cats were getting into the car so she put a rug over the hood. Obviously surface rust developed under the rug but the rest
of the car was quite rust free. “When his wife died, the daughter gave the car to her nephew, who was going to put a V8 in it and race it. Fortunately, someone told him this would be terrible to do to such an original car. He put a new tank in it, new lines, and new tires. I just replaced the original exhaust pipe and it still has the original brake shoes. “When I purchased it, I just wanted to have the front painted and leave the remainder original but there was no guarantee that the paint would match so I had the whole car painted in the original colour. It is a great car to service
and drive and a wonderful ‘barn find.’” It’s interesting to note that John Ziler purchased a Volkswagen when he discovered he could not afford a new Falcon when he wanted one in 1965. It was the popularity of the Volkswagen in the 1950s that prompted the Big Three to bring out compact cars beginning in 1960: the Corvair from General Motors, the Valiant from Chrysler, and the Falcon from Ford. The first Falcons had a six cylinder of only 144 cubic inches cranking out 90 horsepower. By 1965, you could order a new Falcon with a six or an eight. I’m always looking for more stories. Email billtsherk@sympatico.ca or write Bill Sherk, 25 John St., P.O. Box 255, Leamington, ON N8H 3W2. Everyone whose story is published in this column will receive a free autographed copy of my latest book: “OLD CAR DETECTIVE FAVOURITE STORIES, 1925 to 1965.”

Fronts captain looks to grandfather for leadership inspiration By Mark Kerr Reporter
Heritage Sports - Kingston Frontenacs captain Michael Moffat doesn’t have to look too far from home to understand what makes a great leader. “My grandfather has been through a lot and taught me about leadership,” said Moffat. “He came from a big family in Ireland and they struggled at times. He was able to make it out and move to Canada.
He started some businesses and made a name for himself because he’s a great leader.” The Frontenacs acquired Moffat from the London Knights before the start of the 2011-12 season. Moffat credits then-captain Tyler Brown with helping him adjust and showing him what it means to be a leader on a hockey team. “Tyler knew what to say and when to say it. He also worked hard all the time,” said Moffat, who served as assistant captain
for the past two seasons before wearing the “C” this year. A recent four-game losing streak tested Moffat’s leadership skills. The Frontenacs halted the slide with a 2-1 win over the Ottawa 67’s on October 29. “I just tried to stay positive in the dressing. Slumps are going to come and go and it’s just part of the game,” he said. Moffat, a veteran by OHL standards, found himself at the other end of the hockey-career spectrum this past September when he attended the training camps of the NHL’s Nashville Predators and the American Hockey League’s Milwaukee Admirals. “ T h e experience (of a professional hockey training camp) was pretty amazing, every kid’s dream,” he said. “I got to see what the lifestyle is like Kingston Frontenacs Captain Michael Moffat Photo/John Harman and what it takes to act like a pro demonstrate more patience with in the first 15 games -- as both a both on and off the puck in his own end. 6squared art show celebrates its second year in Kingston By Mandy Marciniak
mmarciniak@thehritageemc.ca
Gazette Events – It is a chance for Kingstonians to expand their art collections in a small, interesting and inexpensive way. The Seniors Association in Kingston is hosting their second annual 6squared Art Show from Nov. 14 – 17. “The idea came about through a couple of members of the Seniors Association,” explained Joanne Franke, coordinator for this year’s show. “In their travels they came across a similar sort of show in Rochester, New York. The show was on a much larger scale than what we do, but they were so impressed with it that they thought it was something that should be brought to Kingston.” After bringing the idea to various friends and fellow employees, the Seniors Association decided to go forward with the concept and luckily it was a huge success. Last
year the event saw 650 art submissions and a sold-out show. A call for submissions is put out, and anyone can submit a piece of art whether they are deemed an artist or not. “We put a call out to anyone in the area who wants to be an artist. Submissions come in from all over and the pieces are all of course 6x6 squared. The submissions come from people of all ages and from all walks of life. It is really quite phenomenal,” said Franke. Pieces are then displayed at the show in the order that they were submitted in order to keep up the anonymity. Purchasers have no idea who the artist is when they buy the piece and they may only become aware of the artist upon picking up their art. “Because they are anonymously done, people have no idea if they are purchasing something by a famous local artist or by my granddaughter. That makes it even more
exciting,” explained Franke. “There are pieces that will just grab individuals immediately and then there are pieces that may be done by loved ones or neighbours or pieces that people may suspect are done by individuals that they admire. So they buy those pieces because of that, but they don’t know for sure until the end.” Inevitably, competition arises among purchasers and in the interest of tempering some of that competition, the Seniors Association is holding a raffle for viewing and purchasing times. “People can purchase tickets for a chance to be one of the first 20 people to make selections. Those people will then have one minute to make their selections and they can choose a maximum of six pieces. It really adds an exciting
element to everything and it provides some fun too,” said Franke. Regardless of whether people get the piece they want or not, the event is fun and benefits an excellent cause. Money raised goes towards the numerous seniors programs provided by the association including language classes, fitness classes, outings, computer literacy classes and much more. Franke urges people to come and check it out and learn more about what the Seniors Association does. “People should come out because it is a truly unique art event that we are able to have here in Kingston. We are not a major city and yet we have a very eclectic,
unique and vibrant art community here. People can also see what people are prepared to do and pull together for a common cause, which is the betterment of life for seniors in our community. The event also allows people to find out exactly what the Seniors Association does in the community.” The show is being held at the Smith Robinson Building at 27 Princess Street and the Gala will be held on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. Those interested in purchasing can preview the works online at www.6squared.ca or at a preview event on Thursday Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The sale then continues on Nov. 16 & 17.

Alsatian restaurant experience was intriguing Jeff Maguire Columnist
Lifestyle – To me one of the joys of restaurant dining is being handed a menu and having the opportunity to scan the food choices available and make a decision to suit your taste and your appetite. In North America at least that’s pretty standard. Restaurants, including the fast food places that are so popular these days, all have menus. And most are pretty extensive. If it is fast food you’re after the available items are normally posted on boards behind the cash registers. If you’re really in a hurry the most popular items are highlighted on a sign in the drive-thru lane. Sitting down to eat in a restaurant here normally includes an ample opportunity to pore over the menu and determine which choice appeals to you on a given day. It becomes habitual actually. In this country we expect to be given a choice, along with enough time to make the “right decision.” We enjoy traveling and something that becomes obvious to you very quickly is that North America is often very different from the rest of the world. That’s a good thing by the way. Variety, after all, is the spice of life! Earlier this month we were in Europe where we spent two enjoyable weeks touring southern Germany and areas of northeast France. Included was two days in the Alsace. The world famous wine producing was once part of Germany but it was annexed to the French Republic immediately following World War I. On an overcast, but dry day our friends Frank and Wendy LeBlanc took Kathleen and I to the French pottery villages which are an interesting attraction in a small area just west of the Rhine River. The Haguenau forest, surrounding villages such as Soufflenheim and Betschdorf (10 kilometres further north) is rich in a type of clay ideally suited for the manufacture of pottery. The art began in Soufflenheim two centuries before the birth of Christ. Today there are still more than two dozen artisans in the village. They produce a wide variety of products including utensils used in the cooking of Alsatian recipes. The region is famous for its food as well as its wonderful wines. We visited several studios in the morning and marveled at the skill of the craftspeople. We watched as workers (mainly women) hand painted pottery which is unique to the area. Kathy loved it! She bought three pieces and would have purchased more if it wasn’t for the difficulty involved in transporting fragile
objects overseas. Our suitcases could only carry so much. We started the day early and not long after midday we were ready for a lunch break. On the way in to Soufflenheim, Frank had noticed a particular restaurant he thought would be worth a try. We backtracked a little and quickly located the place. The sign out front read “Restaurant Au Boeuf”. “So, a restaurant specializing in beef,” I said to myself.
Unique experience This restaurant experience was unlike any Kathy and I have ever experienced! Inside the décor was very plain. On entering we passed the kitchen from which emanated a delicious aroma. In the cozy dining room a small bar stood to the left. Opposite the bar were tables covered with simple cloths. They resembled benches more than tables. The waitress was clearly run off her feet. The restaurant was very busy at lunch hour. She did manage to greet us with a jaunty “bonjour” as we walked in however. In the Alsace, similar to other parts of Europe, eating establishments are only open for limited periods. In addition, just like in Newfoundland, restaurants close so employees can go home for lunch. An odd concept for most North Americans I know and not the most convenient on a given day either. But hey, tradition is tradition. And the French, in particular, are very traditional! Alsatians descend on their favourite restaurants to take advantage of the relatively brief opportunity to enjoy a hearty lunch. When the kitchen closes you are out of luck. And in small French villages fast food establishments are non-existent, something that adds to their charm in my opinion. The whole experience in this particular restaurant – and Frank assured us there are many businesses which operate the same way – was culture shock for Kathy and me. We quickly discovered there was no menu. The daily special, which in some cases is displayed on a sign board, is all there is. Frank chuckled when he told us we had two choices, “Take it or leave it!” Lunch in France is substantial and an experience to be savoured – well, as long as the kitchen is open that is. It was a week day and the menu was chicken noodle soup, followed by a beef dinner served family style. Included were generous portions of beef, potatoes and creamed carrots. The bonus was lots of thick, rich gravy. The waitress judges the portions by
the number of people at the table. As we watched with interest she emerged from the kitchen carrying bowls loaded with all of the above, destined for a growing number of diners. At the table next to ours, but facing the bar instead of the kitchen, was an impressive looking chap who was clearly enjoying his meal. As I watched he drained his soup bowl and when the beef dinner appeared he tucked in with gusto. He washed it all down with a large glass of rose wine. I whispered across the table to Wendy, “Don’t look now, but de Gaulle is sitting behind you.” In a dark room and in profile monsieur would be a dead ringer for the controversial French general and statesman. It was his nose that created the illusion. An impressive schnoz indeed! We had entered the restaurant with the intention of having a drink and a snack. The meal being dispensed around us was far more than we were prepared to entertain at lunch-time. When our turn came we ordered soupe au poulet and baguette, along with a glass of beer or wine. A strange combination I know. But hey, we were on holiday! The waitress looked a little miffed that we hadn’t gone with the full menu. With a shrug of her shoulders she hurried off to fill our orders. Salty soup The beer and wine was well received (Frank, the driver, had coffee). So was the baguette. Nobody, but nobody bakes bread as well as the French! The soup was long on noodles and heavy on salt. I said I thought they
must have dropped the whole shaker into the pot but didn’t have time to make a fresh batch. If I had eaten all of it I would have had a month’s worth of sodium. So I stuck with the beer (a wonderful French brew called Fischer) and baguette. Of course with maps, cameras and shopping bags in hand we were a curiosity in the small town restaurant. Speaking predominantly English meant most of the patrons immediately pegged us as “Américaines stupide” (stupid Americans). During our brief stay one lone chap stood silently at the bar sipping a glass of spirits. In a French au Boeuf if you’re just having a drink you stand so you won’t take up a place at a table. I noticed
that he regarded us with what appeared to be mild contempt, even though I came in wearing a baseball cap with the word “Canada” emblazoned on the front. A bit of a melting pot, North America! I have to admit I enjoyed the experience far more than the lunch. But travel is just that, an experience. One that is not to be missed! On the way to the car Frank pointed to a sign board at the roadside. “Tomorrow’s menu,” he noted. Once again the key ingredient was beef. “Take it or leave it,” I replied. Women of the community soon to be pampered By Kelly Reid Reporter
Gazette Events - “These days, times are tough,” says Penny Brown, a Kingston expat that’s been living in the city for close to twenty years. “There’s real need.” Penny is thinking specifically of women in the community that have been affected by divorce, homelessness, mental illness, impoverishment and other struggles. On Nov. 9, Penny is planning a day to pamper these women with manicures, makeovers, and lavish treatment. “It just came about out of my own experiences through the past 10 years. I’ve dealt with some of the circumstances that have touched the lives of some of these women,” says Penny of what inspired her to plan the event, dubbed Beauty for Women. This is the second year for the initiative, and Penny looks forward to another successful day. Last year, ac-
cording to Penny, “Some of the women couldn’t believe how beautiful they looked. My volunteers were able to make good connections with other volunteers. Through different conversations, different needs were met.” This year, Penny expects about a hundred attendees, including twenty or so volunteers. “I do hope that they really feel beautiful when they’re done,” she goes on. “But I hope that we’ll be able to come together in a real caring way with our various strengths and weaknesses. I hope some healing will come out of it as well.” In addition to makeovers and connecting with others, the women will also enjoy lunch and door prizes. “I like it to be a lavish day. It can only be done like that by the generosity of people that make it happen,” Penny explains. She is grateful to Annette Gencarelli and her team of beauty experts from Aloette Cosmetics, and Mike Marrello and stylists from

Marrello’s Hairstylist’s Adv. Academy for donating their time and products to conduct the makeovers. She was also able to raise funds to cover the cost of the hall rental through a gift basket raffle donated by The Bay. Local stores have also donated the lunch: “Different supermarkets in the area have provided me with gift certificates, which I use towards the purchase of food,” explains Penny. Penny hopes, though, that she will receive a few more donations before the event takes place. Her goal is to have a door prize for every participant, and she is asking the community to donate prizes or funds in order to see this goal realized. “If they don’t get used, they will either be held over until next year or they’ll be donated to other women’s outreaches,” Penny says. She is close with women from organizations such as Interval House, Dawn House, Martha’s Table, and other local groups that would benefit from unused items. Penny asks that anyone interested
in donating contact her at beautyforwomen@outlook.com. RSVPs to the event are also appreciated, but not mandatory. Women are welcome to drop in between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at the corner of Clergy and Princess Streets. “It’s best if they want to be there the whole time, just so they can benefit from the whole thing,” Penny
adds. She also suggests that women come with clean, dry hair, as the facility has no basins. “Most of all,” says Penny, “the emphasis is that it’s really a day worth coming to. For women that feel that this speaks to them, it’s really worth it to be there. It really is a day that they truly get blessed by.” To learn more, visit www.beautyforwomen.ca.
